The “Car Talk” of economics and politics
A clear-eyed view of economics, politics, and unintended consequences from a mostly libertarian perspective. James and Antony remind me of “Click and Clack” from Car Talk, both informative and entertaining. Unless you are a “government can solve all of our problems” type, you will enjoy this immensely.

Will Surprise You
It’s both informative and entertaining. Although James is a little too melodramatic - likely doing it for the humor? Antony is ever optimistic and excitable, which is contagious to the minds need to know about todays topics in depth and from a practical perspective.

James is too angry
I write this as a longtime fan, who gave the show five stars in 2018/2019. During 2020 and beyond, James became increasingly aggravated and irritable. I hope he finds peace soon, because he has been very difficult to listen to in the opening segments. He mistakes vitriol for humor (particularly towards Anthony), and can’t stop railing against Trump for even a single episode. Sure, make the well deserved jab, but I subscribed to Words and Numbers for heady intellectual talk, not another parade of orangmanbad jokes.

#188 wasn’t exactly precise on Bitcoin’s history, future, current situation
Love the show! But this episode put me on edge the moment I saw it available, because I expected a lot more biased and perplexed commentary from Roger Ver against Bitcoin (not Bitcoin Cash). Surprisingly, it wasn’t incredibly biased and misleading.. With that said.. There’s a decent amount of inconsistency with his explanation of how Bitcoin has evolved and how it has attempted (and succeeding) to solve the medium of exchange problem that was intentionally left out by Ver here; e.g. Layer 2 solutions such as Lightning, Liquid, etc. Those false claims about big businesses dropping Bitcoin some years ago (Microsoft, etc) due to it becoming too expensive are insulting to the Bitcoin community. Bitcoin was initially wrongly overhyped as fast and “free”, but then reality kicked in and those businesses that didn’t understand and/or want to believe in the intentional creation of a fee market decided it’s too early or to make a fork of Bitcoin (hence all the Bitcoin insert_something_here clones). There was no mention of businesses that are dropping altcoins (including Bcash) in favor of becoming a Bitcoin-only business. This is happening more frequently now since serious financial businesses (Unchained Capital, River Financial, etc) understand the real value proposition of Bitcoin as its going through its evolution of becoming the digital money of the world (yep, I’m brainwashed too). Please, have someone explain Bitcoin’s history and pathway going forward from its actual progress. At least Ver didn’t sh*t on Bitcoin completely, which I can only applaud as a basic bitcoiner. Keep up the good work!

This is easily the best part of my Wednesday. Harrigan and Davies offer reasonable, heartfelt and often uplifting commentary that is so conspicuously absent from today's political discourse. Little doubt the world would be a better place if we heeded their advice and made a concerted effort to be nice to each other.

Entertaining and thought provoking
I may not agree with everything said, but this podcast is thought provoking and still entertaining. One of the nice aspects (that more podcasts should emulate) is that each episode is as long as it has to be. They don’t stretch out the topic to fill space to make the podcast conform to a specific time.

Fun podcast about important topics
This may be my favorite podcast. James and Antony are very skilled in taking important and sometimes complicated topics, and making them accessible to everyone, with a sprinkle of humor. They have great chemistry which makes the show work very well, and despite what James says, they are always open to suggestions and dialogue with people with whom they may not necessarily agree.

Viewing the world as it is in fact, not in emotion
I genuinely look forward to listening to this show every week. The hosts James and Antony, do an excellent job of viewing issues that face us each day bereft of any bias except for that of logic, fact, and evidence. Sprinkle in a little bit of bad humor and a great deal of intelligence on a broad range of topics from economics to classical liberalism, and we have ourselves a classic for any car ride or workout.

Rare quality
There are many knowledgeable, skilled podcasters out there, but what I think makes this podcast unique is the integrity and even-tempered attitude of the hosts, James and Antony. For a podcast that often discusses politics topics, it doesn’t feel political at all. You don’t feel like you’re being lectured to. They converse in such a refreshingly calm and honest way, and they have an ability to make ideas so clear and logical that they almost seem self-evident. At the same time, James and Antony don’t pretend to know everything—there’s an entire episode focused on this very topic, i.e. difficult issues they have mixed feelings about. Every week, Words & Numbers is easily the podcast I look forward to most.

Econ makes the earth turn round
With all the talk of politics and how heated things get on tv and on social media, W&N provides a wonderful discussion on current social and economic issues. And the hosts provide a very clear (but still deep) explanation of how things really work. Also everyone should know who James and Antony are.

Fantastic Podcast
This podcast is both Entertaining and Educational. I really enjoy the perspective that is given on important issues that face all of us. The best part (other than entertainment value) is that I always learn something. They do a terrific job explaining economic and social principles that can and or should effect our way of life, in a way anyone can understand. I wish our politicians would listen and learn. Many in both sides could use the Education! So Listen and share with your friends and family!

Economics lessons for non-economics students
I’ve really come to look forward to each new episode. I always learn something new or I’m asked to consider something from a new perspective. These lessons come with down to earth humor and manage to skillfully walk the fine line between never speaking to me as if I’m an idiot and never using language or concepts that go over my head. The free market offers solutions to many problems, but James and Antony are open to other ideas that work. I really appreciate the willingness to be critical of politicians on both sides of the aisle and even (on the rare cases when it’s warranted) giving credit.

Words & Numbers podcast
Words & Numbers is an excellent podcast. It is published weekly by two professors: Antony Davies, a professor of economics at Duquesne University, and James R. Harrigan, a professor of political science, philosophy and economics at University of Arizona. They are incredibly entertaining and informative. They talk about current events, sometimes past events that are relevant. They also discuss a foolishness of the week as well. Their discussions are incredibly rational manner; they look at principles first and don’t jump onto the issues bandwagons. I highly recommend listening to these podcasts to anyone who would like to learn more about the world we live in. Antony and James discuss the good as well as the bad; you will be shaking your head at what you learn, as well as laughing hysterically with both of them at other times.

But there’s a disturbing trend afoot. World trade (measured as exports and imports as a fraction of world GDP) is down 5% since 2011, and US trade is down 20% over the same period. Worse, prior to 2011, US trade was on a solid upward trajectory for a couple of decades. From 2011 on, had US trade continued to grow at its historical rate, it would be 30% more today than it is. - Episode 305: How Did We Get Here?Over the past century, three constraints on the federal government have failed. When we started ignoring Constitutional constraints, we opened the door to massive increases in federal spending. When voters started asking politicians for more “free” stuff, we walked through the door. And when we went off the gold standard politicians were able to strong-arm the Federal Reserve into funding the massive spending. What transpired was unsustainable spending, which created unsustainable debt, which required money printing, which is causing inflation. The United States faced this combination of problems forty years ago. One important difference is that whereas we are politically divided today, then we were politically united. - Episode 301: 8 BillionThe world population crossed the 8 billion mark this week. As far back as at least the late 1700s, experts were predicting that overpopulation would lead to mass starvation. Time and again, the experts end up being both right and wrong. They tend to be right in their projections that the world population is exploding, but they are always wrong about it leading to mass starvation. In fact, today’s 8 billion people live far better lives than did the 1 billion that lived back in the late 1700s.
