Where Should We Begin? with Esther Perel

Fascinating
Esther is amazing. I love listening to her ask questions. What’s fascinating is how she leads clients to confront and explain their profound selfishness and they can’t see it ie Leaving your wife and 4 children to marry your mistress who was also married with two children. Stunned me. ‘How can you explain saying no to all the expectations and the values you purported to hold dear, and put your own personal pleasure ahead of the highest good of alllllll those lives?’ I’ll never stop listening, just to hear the protective parts of people run massive interference for their exiles.

5/19 episode ✨✨🔥
Esther’s gift of wisdom about relationships, mental health expertise, trauma-sensitivity, racial equity lens come out in this episode and preceding shows. I see myself… I see others … and I am grateful. PERIOD.

Exactly what I needed to hear
Just finished “My orgasm is not just for me” and I’m sitting here dazzled. The beauty, openness, generosity & love these two guests showed, in addition to Esther’s exquisite sensitivity & perceptiveness—whew. It was such a privilege to hear their stories. I have been in deep anxiety & mourning for the future of reproductive & sexual freedom in America. Listening to Esther & guests hold sexual healing, love, culture, and creativity in such a place of honor was, again, a real privilege & something that will stay with and sustain me for a long time. Deep thanks to all involved. I am sure the ancestors are rejoicing!

Amazing
This latest episode, “Twice Married, to Each Other,” is definitely one to download and listen to multiple times. I find myself saying this often for most of Esther's episodes but this one FOR REAL! I often say, if I had this podcast and knew about Esther’s coaching and books 15 years ago, I’d still be married. She gives us much needed insight and perspective and tools to help. I simply can’t recommend this podcast enough. On behalf of my future husband, thank you. I’m forever changed.

brilliance
i’ve learned so much about how to look inward, and how to apply these conversations to my own dynamics and relationships!! thank you esther! the honesty and vulnerability reached in these episodes is breathtaking! the way you break down conversations has opened my mind to look at conversations almost as a script, and break down what we say line for line and see where things go awry. so amazing how a single word difference can completely alter a conversation!!!!!

Deeply insightful and enlightening
Just about any listener, whether currently in a relationship or not, would benefit from listening to this podcast. She is remarkably skilled, compassionate, and experienced in this work. Though I never even liked “Dr. Phil,” she demonstrates that therapeutic interventions in the media can have substance.

Invaluable
I can’t even convey just how important the topics covered in this podcast are for Therapists. The episode, “I don’t mean to be mean,” completely tapped into a couple’s session that I had just this evening. This episode provided me guidance, validation, education, and understanding after the session ended and I began to think that I was maybe in over my head.

Wish I could give less than one star…
This is the first review I have ever made on here after many years of trying new podcasts and typically I would remain silent, but this show infuriated me. Originally I was excited to listen based on her interview from the daily show with Trevor Noah, but after the first episode I was completely put off. I can see she is trying to be non-biased and have a prospective of her own, however (in my opinion) she gives such poor advise it seems likely she will do more harm than good. Please don’t listen to me if you enjoyed it.

Tidbits of truth
Regardless of the topic & despite me thinking “this one is not really for me”, Esther consistently guides people to reframe their stories in ways that feel real, deep, yet understandable. There are always tidbits of truth for us all in each other’s stories & Esther is a skilled guide! Thank you for that!

Woke now
Even Esther couldn’t escape the culture. Such a shame. I’m Mexican; my husband white. I cannot imagine adding imaginary problems (privilege) into an already full of complexities relationship. I’m heart broken for any young women being brainwashed into believing this is something worth bringing into a romantic entanglement.

My Partners Privilege
I love Esther but her feedback on this episode lacked significant antiracism and understanding about how white privilege is at play in this relationship. Her feedback was valid but also shaming in some ways to the Iranian woman. This couple needs to talk about privilege and how it’s at play in their relationship, and it’s not the woman’s responsibility to accept her partners privilege and feel gratitude for it. The woman was downtrodden at the end, having been loaded up further with responsibility to “accept her reality” rather than truly being heard and being given tools to approach a white world with greater confidence and resilience.

Great pod, small quibble
Esther is phenomenal! I would love it if there could be better sound quality: for example, sometimes the guests are hard to hear, and sometimes it sounds like Esther’s mic is rubbing on clothing (?) and so forth. Can make it hard to listen.

Relatable on a Deeply Human Level
You may wonder why you would want to listen to a couple who seemingly has nothing in common with you or your situation. It’s because Esther has an incredibly honed skill of boiling down the challenges that we face in relationships to basic human needs and desires. She’s so good at connecting the dots and helps me to examine the stories I tell myself and also to have compassion to me and others. We are all reasonable when you get down to it! We all have rational reasons for why we do what we do. As someone who has been to therapy, I note that she is a little more assertive and I assume that’s because this is a one-time session and not how she would approach regular clients. She is egalitarian and will spend more time on the partner that thinks they’re innocent and doesn’t acknowledge their role in the dynamic.

Allows for introspection
There are some males that may say there is sexism in these podcasts. I would say, to the contrary, this is the most even handed view into a therapy session that I have heard. She does give emphasis/focus to those who have more of a difficulty recognizing their part in what has happened. The scary part of this series, is how much of each session reflects my own thoughts, feelings, experiences, even though I have been in a committed relationship for 17 years... with no physical infidelity or seemingly no mental infidelity.

Disappointing.
Was inspired by the first few episodes I heard but as I listened to more the hosts sexism became blaring. Every woman was somehow the victim and every man needed the work. I could scarcely find an episode where both genders of a opposite sex marriage walked away with things to work on. She cuts off the men constantly and insults them. It takes her insights and makes them fairly untrustworthy

Insight for all
Even though we’re not in the same exact situations, we can all learn so much from this dialogue and apply that insight to our own relationships, marriages, etc... Thank you, Esther, this is mental health and relationship wellness gold. Also, thank you to the anonymous couples who volunteered this, because we can all see some of these stories in our own upbringings, feelings/“truths” we’ve told ourselves, and communication styles. Just thank you!

What a gift
It’s so easy to feel alone in this life, especially when it comes to relationship conflicts. It’s such a gift to be able to realize how similar everyone’s struggles are, and how sometimes we have it really good compared to others and never realize. Esther is masterful and it’s really cool to hear her work. I get the same feeling listening to her as I do when seeing a professional athlete or maker do their thing.

Authentic, Organic, What we all need, especially in our current climate
I do not write podcast reviews. Ever. Less it’s Rogan, lol. He deserves. Getting on with it... Let me preface this with this statement-This is probably the most organic podcast based in the realm of therapy I have heard to date. The format of raw, real sessions briefly broken up by Esther’s explanation and viewpoint as to how the session was going, and where she felt it needed to go is extraordinary, at times heartbreaking, and for those very things commendable. Keep up the great work, I cannot give this a high enough rating.

Incredibly helpful
Esther Perel has an uncanny gift. I began listening out of curiosity for “other people’s problems” and was surprised to find so much of specific, personal value to myself. So often I’d think that an episode wouldn’t have much relevance to me, only to find moments of deep significance. I think what comes through first of all is the mode of communication, based on full acceptance of what each person has to say. Her ability to bridge the gap between couples seems to stem from this, and her ability to see through the confusion of surface turbulence. Outstanding!

Brilliant and Stunningly Informative
Esther Perel is just brilliant! I have never enjoyed a Podcast more nor have I ever learned so much about myself by listening to her while she has these Therapy Sessions with her Clients! It amazes me how she is able to listen, figure out both sides of the clients issues and come to a conclusion on how to mend and resolve their issues if they are both willing to put in the effort and work. Esther Perel....Where have you been all my life? AND, thank you for sharing your sessions via your Podcasts. You are healing so many of us! God bless you always! ♥️🙏🏼

Genius insights
I have had the good fortune of meeting very talented therapists during my time pursuing a master’s degree in clinical psychology. I also have been in personal and couples therapy at different times over the course of my life. Even so, I have never heard anyone as absolutely gifted as Ms. Perel. Her questions and her observations are spot on. Her ability to listen and then help a couple understand the underlying issues is brilliant. She is direct and professional - but also brings humor and warmth to the sessions. There is never an episode where I don’t learn something. I also like how Ms. Perel, during post production, inserts some explanations of why she she asked someone something or makes an observation about herself and expresses how she might have said or done something differently. There are quite a few podcasts I like, but if I had to choose just one, this would be it. I’m not a fan of the saying “an a-ha moment,” but that is the only way I can describe how I feel at least a couple of times during one of the sessions. Brilliant!

Eye-Opening Podcast
There has never been a book, podcast or movie so revolutionary. This podcast, through the conflicts of an anonymous couple, make you look at your own personal relationships in a different light. Esther’s insight and advice is clear and honest, which causes you as a listener to reflect on your own turmoil with a new perspective. Not culturally sensitive
I’ve enjoyed listening to this podcast, and as a black female I was excited when I saw there would be a couple from Nigeria featured. As it turns out, it wasn’t a Nigerian couple but a (likely white) couple from Seattle who recently relocated to Nigeria. Ok fine. But then before the episode even started, the preview described Nigeria like a depraved nation with people not social distancing and maybe stealing their belongings. Couldn’t listen past that. Also there have been 1.5 million cases in the US so which country is safer?

Mom, Moniques & Special Needs child with no Name
As a mother with two children, one of which is special needs, the other of which is not. Both boys, I was interested in that episode. I think the therapist did a good job, but a few things bothered me. Ok I understand why the child wasn’t named, I suppose. The focus is the “other” child. First thing that bothered me was the mother saying that she was told her child would never talk and should be institutionalized. I don’t believe that was ever told to her. It’s a developmental delay and it’s always we don’t know. We have to see how they develop. They would never make a statement of such finality. I find parents say that as a way to elevate their own selves. I defied the medical professionals. I never gave up. It irritates me, a lot. I have a nonverbal adult son. It just isn’t true, so I always feel disappointed when parents do that. Secondly the pronoun issue. That is a common problem with those who have Autistic Disorder aka as Classic Autism. I refrain from using pronouns at all, because my son doesn’t connect them with the person. Basically they don’t understand them. So if he says he or she? He does so without understanding why she (for 20+ years) was now a he? Or when is it she or when is it he. Of course he looks for a reaction. Because that is how he chooses the pronoun. He doesn’t choose one or the other because he sees you as one or the other. They are meaningless to him. So that expectation is also selfish.

The podcast was recommended, I started by listening to season one and could not stop. I felt a character in many of the couple sessions because It reminded me of my relationships. I did an exercise of writing down my break up pattern and I realized/recognized so much about myself. Merci Esther!

Low point on the stripper epi
While it would seem interesting, the show about the strippers, I found, was hard to get through because it was so dull. There was no insight, no clever understanding, just a story of how to women reconcile their life as strippers. Super boring.

I am continually astounded with how she is able to get so much done over a session. I have learned so much about my relationships and my relationship with myself. thank you for doing this work and making this podcast. *** one caveat is that I would love to hear more patients of color dealing with radicalized identities within romantic partnerships and family, talks of adoption, and talks with lgbt people ***

Great advice for mommies
I understand this therapist offers quite a bit of advice compared to a typical therapist who constantly follows up a client statement with more questions to the client to get them to explore their thoughts...but I love that this therapist gives practical advice. It’s super useful. Hope she continues to explore even more practical issues faced by moms.

Needing a place of resonance, learning and solace
Dr. Esther Perel is honestly brilliant in every sense of the word. She is studied, skilled, deeply empathetic, self reflective, flexible, honest, humorous, full of life and altogether effective. This is coming from a person from a person with a clinical background, who normally judges and dismisses quality of work in this realm. I have felt more safe, hopeful and understood in just listening to her (after a devastating separation from my husband) than I could ever have hoped for. I now listen every day. As I take to the pavement to take care of myself physically, I tune in to my newest episodes to take care of my heart and psyche. My goodness do I want to work with her and my husband!!! A must if you have had had/want a serious, whole, lasting, loving, forgiving, mutually fulfilling and sustainable relationship. I’m forever grateful even if my marriage ends. Listen! Love and gratitude to Dr. Perel. Thank you for being on this most difficult journey with me from afar.

Nourishment for your relationship soul...
I’m not even in a relationship and I thoroughly enjoy listening to Esther. First heard of her on a Dax Podcast. She brings such a deep understanding of issues within relationships and sets the bar for what a therapist should be able to accomplish. While she is having a session, she will break several times and address the podcast audience with things like, “here is what I heard”, “this is what I am thinking”, “I am going to try this”. This provides the listener with a better understanding of the session. There are too many things I love about this podcast to describe in one review. Needless to say, listening to Esther Perel will be a requirement for my next partner. lol...

Well worth the purchase
Been a listener of "Where Should We Begin?" from the beginning and so purchasing Season 3 from Audible was a no brainer. There were 6 couples, all with a different story. Some issues were very relatable and I found that you can actually learn a lot from these. A minor downside (which Esther is aware of), this is not recorded in a sound booth so there are times when the New York construction noise overpowers the conversation (distracts it).

I'm only halfway through season 1 and I can say this podcast is now my favorite (and I listen to a lot of podcasts). The conversations are so intimate that sometimes I feel I shouldn't be listening. So I am very grateful to Mrs Perel and team for letting us see "behind the curtain". Mrs Perel beautifully walks that line where she hears her guests, yet knows just the right thing to say to tip the scales in favor of their flourishing. When she plays with them, and they play back, it really is fun.

Great
Sometimes I think the participants are being “led” to a conclusion they don’t necessarily buy into 100%, but overall, for those of us interested in the human condition and how people cope, these episodes have been great listening! I have picked up some tidbits that I am reminded of in certain situations. Like, in regard to the saying that time heals all wounds, there was the observation, “There’s nothing magical about time. It’s what happens during that time that’s important.” I keep checking back for more episodes, I hope there’s more to come! Season 3 is here, yay!

Please make the episodes longer
The themes are universal and listening to the calm, compassionate and animated way in which Esther Perel decodes the problems in each session to identify the real issues is compelling. The editing from the three hour session to the 30 mins episode is done well but often I would like to understand the process and wish the episode was at last an hour long. Thank you for creating this series. It is a real gift.

Perspective
This podcast gives an insane amount of perspective to those who listen. There is so much to learn from each episode and Esther’s thoughts from when she re-listens are some of the best pieces. A truly vulnerable look into people’s lives that may be struggling with some of the same things you are. Besides, Esther’s accent is so enjoyable and there’s always something to learn from her!

Went home, bought all of her books.
Not everyone can communicate their feelings, even fewer of us take time to understand their meaning, where they come from, what parts of our pasts have contributed to how we react, understand, interpret. This series was incredibly insightful, human, normalizing— I could go on, forever, with praise. I couldn’t stop listening, then had to listen again once I took the time to absorb them. I did purchase all of Perel’s books. They’re great, but hearing her in her sessions with real people in the live was far more intriguing. I’m totally hooked. Esther Perel x Audible HAS to make more...

Love THIS
This podcast is a glimpse into couples’ lives and how they got where they are today. It is personal and intimate. The episodes usually don’t cover anything sexual or erotic but rather are focused on the individuals that make up these couples. Esther has a gift of perception and is able to balance sensitivity while succinctly articulating feedback. She is truly amazing - I want to be just like her when I grow up!!

Life altering
We can learn from others' mistakes and welcome a new day for our relationship. Listen as Perel peels back layers of anger, fear, shame and hopelessness to reveal the fascinating humans we really are...or can be, with an open mind. I recognized my behavior patterns and emotional pitfalls in several episodes. We are more similar than we think. I urge you to listen with an open heart and I'm confident you'll find wisdom and answers as I did.

An excellent use of time for all of us
These episodes are SO good. Even if the problems aren’t in your own life, there are small things that you can glean and apply to your own relationships. I’ve recommended it to all my friends and family, some single, some with partners. Esther has a wonderful ability to build rapport, see through what someone is saying, and bring much needed insight into the situation. She also readily admits when she does something wrong, which gains trust and shows such a respect for the people she’s working with. I hope there’s more to come. Invaluable
With psychiatry being so stigmatized in our culture this show brings people into the room and helps to humanize the practice. You get to walk with people through the challenges of poor and uninformed perspectives, assumptive thoughts, implied communications, and childhood trauma. Esther does a brilliant job of unweaving where destructive thoughts and actions stem from to help not only the people on the podcasts but also those listening along who may have thought or done the same things. I can’t think of anything better to help people grow personally than to hear these types of challenges and problems be addressed in a coherent manner with a professional explaining along the process. It’s worth the listen and the self reflection, a truly powerful podcast. I don’t think there were many episodes that didn’t bring me to tears. I hope this podcast continues as long as possible.

Listening to this show is putting me in the right frame of mind to be a better listener in my relationship. Thank you! Thank you Esther and to all the couples who have generously shared their experiences so that others like myself can learn and be better in our relationships. I have heard it many times how important it is to use empathic listening / reflective listening. It is literally relationship 101. So simple yet so hard to consistently develop as a habit. Listening to the show and listening to the technique of reflective listening applied over and over to different situations is reminding me of how important it is to build this habit in my relationship ship. Thank you!

Listening to the work of a great therapist
It’s an honor to be let in on the very private lives of these couples and their struggles. I hope this can open up conversation and help couples recognize themselves in these other couples and seek out help. Or at least reflect on their place in the relationship. I also appreciate the times Ester will talk about a moment missed or a mistake she made while in session. An honest portrayal of therapy that, as a therapist, inspires me to keep learning and to be authentic.

This is an amazing podcast with something for everyone. I begin thinking that nothing I'm hearing applies to me, my marriage is not falling apart, we're straight without gender issues, we don't have any true resentment. I am learning a lot!
As a clinician, I find Esther Perel informative, effective, and experienced. As a human being, I find her captivating and compelling. Listening to her conducting sessions is to be allowed into the room of the master. She is artful, and authoritative yet deeply compassionate. She gets to the heart of the couple’s issues based on their attachment style and history and can quickly summarize in depth the heart of what has happened, as well as suggest what needs to happen to improve or save the relationship. While some are not to be saved—Esther has no pretensions that any of them will, that is not her objective, as it should be for any couples therapist—she defines the dynamic to help couples understand. Esther often gives a summation monologue at the end of the show, at times indicating follow up with the couple, which is insightful and interesting. I also enjoy that there are a large range of relationships featured; LGBTQ, races, ethnicities, cultures, married/unmarried, children/no children, yet any couple could have any of the issues involved. The choice of who is featured highlights the commonality of relationship dynamics rather than separate them. All in all, a unique and fantastic podcast!

esther’s style of therapy and insight has given me chills in how she’s able to cut through the BS through her counseling but also giving her clients the space and ability to put into their own words of what they’re absorbing or “hearing” from not only her but from their partners as well . my own personal therapist thought i’d get a lot out of these podcasts , especially the the one titled “ trauma and touch” and it didn’t disappoint! as a hopeful “ helper” as my therapist calls of those who want to get into the world of counseling and wanting to be a therapist one day , i feel like i’m being shown of what good quality therapist out there are like esther perel and jacki larusso!
