Very solid
Another podcast that thinks all its listeners are from LA so they talk about pronouns and being non binary way too much, but glad I stuck it out cuz itâs getting good! Lilyâs character can be quite annoying, Altho I think thatâs the point.

JUST DONâT
If you want to listen to terrible side characters (both in writing and voice acting) constantly fight amongst themselves, a main character that they make almost insufferable which seems a bit insulting, and absolutely forced and performative activism, this is your podcast.

A show about nothing?
I got as far as the third ep before bailing on this abysmally boring, uneventful, trivial show. Nothing but gossipy small-town women chatting about people and insignificant events. The great mystery of this self-described Gothic mystery is how this ever got greenlit.

Love Dot, Abby, WesâŠ
All the characters are great. Lily sounds much older than Dot. Her younger self sounds like a boy going through puberty. Love the character lily. Donât love the voice.

Wanted to love it
This podcast started off great. But now itâs moving so slow. Some later episodes just seem like fillers without moving the story along. Since new episodes are released weeks apart itâs hard to remember what is even happening anymore

Well acted & produced
The show is well acted & produced. I sometimes wonder about the plot arc, like Iâm not sure the juice is worth the squeeze? Anyway, a fine, low-key distraction podcast, for sure.

Cute but, drowning in virtue signaling
I wanted to love this plot, but the political/ideological insertions are a bit overdone. If you can ignore that, some endearing characters and very well paced. Great audio production. However really, the Abbie character is dreadful. Made it to season 2, not sure I will finish.

A quirky good time
When I first started listening I was skeptical but needed a new scripted, fiction pod and this one really grew on me. A lot of the fiction shows have mediocre to bad actors but not Unwell. Truly solid acting, a unique premise, folksy, funny, and at times a touch spooky. Now, for me, the writing went a little off the rails in season three and some episodes were disjointed but it tightened back up for season four. Iâm a fan.

Slow to start, catching its legs
So Iâm only on episode seven. Episode two titled the diner I thought was fantastic and very eerie but started getting slow again after that. The astronomer appears in episode six and he is by far my favorite character in this podcast is starting to definitely get its legs. Canât wait to see what else is in store will update further after finishing season one. 4/5 *s so far EDIT: I just canât get into season 4 whatsoever. It feels like the story is moving at a snails pace and nothing is connected anymore. Was once one of my favorite podcasts but itâs now losing its luster for me, and it really bums me out. đ

Terrible voice acting for two characters
Dot (the elder woman) sounds younger than her adult daughter and dear lord why do you have a kid as a character so late in an adult series. Get rid of Jamie.

Potentially my favorite story to exist.
I have relistened to this podcast all the way through 3 TIMES. It is so good, the characters are so well established and have such depth. Itâs funny, heartfelt, a little spooky, and nerdy. A touch of drama, lots of mystery. I could listen to it countless times and not get tired of it. If you want a wonderful weird world to immerse yourself into, welcome to Mount Absalom.

Immersive, funny, moving, scary, such a good show!
This show is a cut above most audio fiction available. Gorgeous sound design, great characters, great acting, delightful twisty story, and a bunch of the best writers working in podcast fiction right now. Couldnât recommend it more!

The story is good, but needs a language warning.
This is not the podcast for me, but it may be for you. I donât like explicit profanity. I get a cuss word will come up in a lot of shows, but one after the other after the other is just, so juvenile. It made this unlistenable for me. The story is very good, but I just canât get past the language.

You forgot the actual horror
Tried. I really did. But after finishing the third episode of two angry chicks and a self-righteous non-0110101001 bickering while encountering absolutely nothing that resembles horror I had to stop before I rolled my eyes permanently. In case any potential snowflakes are worried it might not be woke enough, the character Abby makes sure to remind the listener at least 5 times in 3 episodes of what her âproper pronounsâ are. 2 stars for sound editing; other than that, stick to writing shorts for NPR.

All Around Incredible
This show really blows my mind. Every aspect of it is incredible. The writing is captivating, the voice acting is compelling, the characters are interesting and lovable, and the story is mysterious and a little spooky. But above and beyond, the soundscape of this show is unparalleled. It makes you feel completely immersed in Mount Absalom! Kudos to everyone involved!

I love this podcast. The characters are great and the storyline is interesting. Iâve almost finished season 3. I was a little worried because other reviewers made it sound like itâs terrible after season 2, but thatâs far from the truth. A true Midwestern feel
This show is amazing. As some mine that grew up in the Midwest I have never felt more called out and at home then listening to these people talk and interact with one another. Well produced, poorly written
I listened into season 3 but I give up. The plot is overwhelmed by weird pacing, lack of focus, and unlikable characters who get worse and worse as the show goes. The sound design is very good, but the plot and characters are too annoying to sit through anymore.

A snailâs pace, ALSO BYE.
This story has progressed so slowly that I barely know whatâs going on anymore. It started off so good in the first two seasons. The pace was great, story was progressing, etc. This new season has just been stagnant. I couldnât listen to the most recent episode where Nora is using a website. A ghost using a website and commenting on it.. Sounds like it could be an interesting tidbit, but they managed to make it boring. Theyâve also managed to make the main antagonist seem super secondary. The Revelator? Eh heâs not important. I wish the story had ended at season three with a sha-bang. Feels like the podcast is kept alive just for the dipsea story ad read payouts. I miss the celery soda days. EDIT: Itâs more than apparent that the creators are just poking fun at their listeners now with this most recent episode (The Nerve). 10 full minutes of ad reads with TERRIBLE audio. I will NEVER use Dipsea Stories or Better Help solely due to the fact that they have been shoved down my throat so much. I honestly hope the Revelator murders everyone in the town and their bodies are torn apart by wolves. At least then something exciting would have happened.

If youâre looking for a simple story
Itâs very slow to start and the plot is not that thick. Couple episodes feel like filler episodes compared to other podcasts. Overall itâs a good podcast for background noise or help pass the time at work. Didnât really hook me, but donât let my review stop you from listening. Everyone has their own taste is a lot of people recommended this podcast which is why I tired it out.

I tried.
Desperate to find a new horror anthology type podcast, so I gave this one a shot. Story was intriguing, but characters were unlikeable, and the voice acting was a bit cartoonish. Also, I understand and agree with the need for diversity in media, but the way itâs done in this podcast really feels force fed. Itâs just kind of gross.

Glad I read reviews
Iâm a couple episodes an was concerned about the lack of anything horror whatsoever involved. Also the characters are extremely unlikeable. There are people who have listened to season 3 and said the same problems are going on so Iâm good. If you like a pretentious âbig cityâ woman coming in to boss everyone and everything around this is definitely your podcast. Humor is almost solely based around identity politics and now that Iâm not 20 years old and in college I donât find it appealing anymore.

I took kinda a break from podcasts during the pandemic because I didnât have a commute during which I could listen to them anymore. Now that Iâm back in the office I CANT BELIEVE I WAITED SO LONG to listen to the rest of season 3. Immediately remembered why I love this podcast. Yikes, so many fragile folks in this review section. Anyway, if you are looking for a fast paced mystery, this isnât the one for you, thankfully there already a lot of great versions of that out there. But I kinda get it, based on the title and artwork I wasnât expecting such a slow, pleasant slice of small town life, character driven story as is presented here. Thankfully so far I still love it.

Gave up....
The acting is really excellent. Honestly. One of the best acted podcasts Iâve seen. But it just takes way too long to get to the good stuff. And when it seems to get going, things only happen for a minute or 2. Wolves are howling. Letâs go investigate! The ordeal lasts for literally 30 seconds and then they are back to normal talk. I held on as long as I could because I really enjoyed the acting, and I thought it had potential to go somewhere, but Iâm almost done with season 1 and itâs still in the same place. I read everyone elseâs comments and it seems like itâs everyoneâs favorite spooky podcast. Iâm still trying to figure out why.

Voice Actors: The voice actors for this are so amazing! It doesnât even sound like theyâre reading from a script. I hate when a podcast Iâm listening to sounds stiff, like when it sounds like theyâre not having a conversation just reading there script. They did an amazing job! I was able to picture what their expressions were like and what they were doing. They did an amazing job at setting the scene. Sound: Some of the sound effects sounded cheap. Like not a lot of effort went into making some of the sounds. Like when that teen is walking it sounds unrealistic. It kinda made me think heâs wearing dress shoes because of the way his foot steps sounded. Unless thatâs what you were going for? Donât get me wrong almost all the sound effects sound amazing. I havenât finished all the episodes yet, itâs possible that the sound getâs better. I love almost all the sound effects, it really set the scene and the atmosphere of where they are/whatâs happening. Plot/storyline/story progression: I think this whole podcast was well executed, the people who created this did an outstanding job. The story progression is a bit of a slow burn but itâs not so slow to where you get bored of it. My god I have no bad things to say about this story!

Decent set-up but every salvageable bit is then butchered by the unskilled cast. The writing is poor and the lackluster virtue signaling does nothing but to pander. Banter is forced and trying way too hard to be witty.

Worth the wait!
I found the story to be a bit slow as to the direction it was taking, but I as curious so I continued. I agree with other ratings on how the volume of the intro, commercials and cast intros to be way to loud. The volume should not have to be turned down before and after the show. It is a considerable difference in volume. But the story really picks up towards the end of season one, by time you get to season 2, it was COMPLETELY WORTH THE WAIT! Love the direction of the story! If not for the audio Iâd give it 5 stars. Update season 3: Best cliffhanger yet!!!!! Canât wait till season 4!!! Volume issue fixed, ty.

Amazing storytelling and world
This show is amazing! Iâve listened to many fictional podcasts, but this one is definitely top of the charts. The sound design really helps immerse you in the story and the world. They have done an amazing job building realistic but unique characters; that drive this story. The world is rich with its own lore and makes it feel like a believable setting. The show manages to be a wonderful mix of creepy and wondrous, I canât wait for season 3âs conclusion. This season has been slower, but I think they wanted to take to time to flesh out the characters and relationships more, while building up the plot in the background. Take the time to listen and fall in love, you wonât regret it!

Try it
I have listened to dozens of fiction podcasts but this one is my favorite. The acting is fantastic, even from the children. Overall, some might describe it as slow, but as someone who usually watches or listens to fast paced thrillers, I disagree. Every scene has a purpose and the story is built perfectly. The sound effect are on point and I can vividly imagine what each character is doing.

More than 5 stars from the observatory
What a special and unique world built with delicate nuance! As someone who listens to wayyyy to many podcasts, I can say that this work is a very special gem. With percussive and tasteful cursing, the sweetest paranormal tenderness, and small town elusiveness, the plot navigates complicated intersectionality without being too heavy handed. Each character is bright and bold in their own right in a surprising number of directions. The story evokes feelings of rewriting history having pronouns effortlessly discussed and queerness embedded into the narrative (both focally and peripherally). The story accomplishes such a special feat of keeping things constantly interesting and surprising but mundane enough to be believable and touching. Paired with delicious visceral sound design and compelling music, the listener is placed right into each scene. The only critiques I can think of are the title not quite fitting and casting (what I assume to be) an adult as young Lilly; very strange choice that feels out of place every time I hear her. I donât like this move on any media. Regardless, this show is a true delight and Iâm so thankful that so many people can be on board the same mission and bring fourth this show. Thank you kindly.

Went down hill... So many ads
It took me about 5 episodes to get into this podcast and I found most of the characters super unlikeable but I decided to stick with it since KFAM is not coming back. Season 3 is awful. It starts with about 5 minutes of ads the story has slowed down so much the xmas episode seemed like a filler episode. Then I don't even get what they're doing with the last 7 mins of each episode there some more ads then the creators or voice actors talk as them selfs (not in character) then sometimes it seems like it leads back into the podcast... Idn if it's part of the story or not so I have just started skipping the first 5 mins and skipping the last 7 mins. The characters are kind of hard to tell a part and sometimes the background noise is so loud I can't even understand what the characters are saying. Also sometimes with the background noise I can't tell what it is so I dont understand what it has to do with the story especially when the characters don't address the sound. At first I thought the episode was just messed up so I tried to listen to it on another podcast platform and it was the same. I'm going to finish season 3 then move on to somthing I enjoy more.

Interesting story with long ads
I canât quite remember how I stumbled across this podcast, but I INSTANTLY fell in love with the sound design and story. I was lucky enough to come across this podcast with a majority of its episodes being loaded. After the insane binge I had, I PATIENTLY waited for the return of the newest season. Hopeful, I instantly clicked when I saw the newest episode was loaded. Sadly, I was hit with ads overtaking the episode. Since season 3, with approximately 25-30 minute episodes (the first 3-5 minutes being ads) the pace of the story started getting slower. I still listen to the podcast, as I am invested in the story, but I am disappointed that the episodes have gotten bombarded with ads. Hey, I get it. Yaâll gotta get paid somehow (ad revenue).

5 episodes in, not sure if Iâll finish
I really want to like this but I just donâtâŠyet. Reading reviews to see if this gets better. I like the idea of quirky small towns and ghosts and boarding houses and itâs cool they have a diverse set of characters, but theyâre all so frustrating and unlikeable. The sound design is great and the voice acting is fine, but the voices for Abbie and Dot sound so similar I often go through whole scenes thinking itâs one character only to find out itâs the other once someone mentions their name or relation to Lilly. My ears also have a hard time swallowing all of these clearly mid-to-late 20 something voices playing either very young or very old characters. Everyone sounds the same age.

Would give this 5 stars if the Ads weren't excessive
I loved the first couple seasons then all the sudden it's like you're listening to more ads than the actual podcast itself. Maybe if the episodes were longer it wouldn't be as bothersome. I just completely stopped trying new episodes in the 3rd season.

Poorly written and grating
I agree with the other reviewers that stopped listening in season 3 due to the plot and writing going downhill. The whole thing is irritatingly Mary Sue-ish, and far from scary or even mysterious enough to stay engaging. I donât think the writers have spent any time in small town USA if this is their (albeit idealized) depiction of it.

Absolutely AMAZING
This is by far my favorite podcast (and Iâve listen to over 80 different podcasts ranging from storytelling to documentary) and the level of humanity and awareness and inclusion and depth that they put into these characters and this story is amazing! I love the diverse inclusive cast and delightfully quirky, quick humor. The way they write is so genuine and natural and the way the characters interact feel real and endearing and they donât give us stereotypes or excuses for the situations they are in. Dotâs sassy hard as nails, piss n vinegar demeanor with a big heart feels incredibly familiar and the heartache and confusion in Dotâs experiences with Alzheimerâs (speaking from someone who has been through this with their own close family members) feels kind yet true and the relationships are relatable and not forced and feels organic. The relationship with her daughter and the town paint this wonderful tale of mystery, and loss and loyalty and duty, disappointment and hope and it never fails to inspire and intrigue me. The voice acting is fantastic- the cast is wonderful and the story isnât just filled with interesting mysteries about a weird small town (which btw is wonderful) but the in depth character driven stories that live in that small town. I also LOVE that they recognize indigenous land at the end of each show and feel that is such an important thing to normalize and educate about. It doesnât feel forced or for clout. Things like this should be normalized till itâs socially acceptable and common everywhere and I feel itâs incredibly important work and the fact they have realized that and put it at the end of the show to educate and show respect means a lot. Well done!

What an unlikeable cast of characters. Also I wish they would get voice actors who were actually old to play older characters and younger voice actors to voice kids. The spookiest part of this town is that everyone sounds about 28

A powerful show
Unwell, A Midwestern Gothic Mystery from Hartlife NFP must be the single most WOKE audio drama on the interwebs right now. The cast represents just about every flavor of humanity on the planet, and acknowledgment of the displacement of the native people at the end of every episode Unwell is the epitome of social awareness. It is also really well written, brilliantly acted, with thoughtful and artful sound design. But what I wanted to write about today is how they are exploring the journey of the character Dot, the proprietor of the townâs boarding house. Dot has dementia, and Unwell is not shy about the heartbreak that impacts family and friends. I have found that when media explores themes that GET REAL, they pull their punches. I would say that it is refreshing and poignant. In this case, it is just a gut punch. It does not make the media you are consuming terrible. It means it has hit pretty close to home, meaning this is important because it gives others a rarely seen perspective into the lives of people who take on such herculean responsibilities. There is never a happy ending. No last-minute saves or miracle cures, just acceptance, grief, and finding the courage to pick up and move on. Last year my family felt this sort of loss. It is only now that I have taken the time to commit it to the screen as words. In truth, I did not even suffer the most traumatic events in our story. I lived it second-hand. I saw the effect it had on the people I loved and how it devastated them. Thank you, Hartlife NFP. You showed a snapshot of what it means to have to process the loss of not only the body and spirit. To see what it is like first-hand, an opportunity for people to gain some perspective of what it means to live through this type of trauma.

Heartbreaking episode, but riveting drama
I just listened to season 3, episode five, and it one of the most riveting podcasts I have ever heard. The actors were so true to Dotâs struggle with dementia, and captured both the emotion and the tragedy as she loses her connection to the present. More focused on the human drama of the characters, with just a smidgen of a connection to the supernatural part of Absalom, this was just a wonderful piece of art. Please keep up the amazing work.

Needs a lot of work
I wish youâd stop putting out 15 minute episodes where nothing ever actually happens. I cannot follow the story from week to week let alone season to season. Itâs very slow and with only 15 minutes per episode, itâs struggling to keep my interest. Release fewer episodes in order to make them longer if you have to. I donât know the solution, but the problem seems to be growing. Iâm sure âCovidâ will be the reasoning.

I literally do not understand whatâs even happening anymore. Itâs so slow... I cannot even remember the plot anymore. I wanted to give it another shot and waited for what felt like a long time for the season 3 premiere and NOTHING happened. Like nothing to keep anyone coming back. The sound effects are great.... BUT they take up 70% of the episode and the other ten minutes of actual dialogue is about nothing really. I will give credit to the voices of Abby, dot and Rudy! Otherwise... what is the actual the Midwestern GOTHIC âmystery?!!! â

Do Not Recommend
The short version is that Iâve listened to the entire 1st and 2nd seasons and would NOT recommend this to a friend. The longer version would be the following: The Good: The sound design is great (the eerie background noises, the spooky music) and really draws you in. The voice acting is good (not great, but good). The Bad: The writing! The story is extremely slow. Few plot threads are resolved, and more are constantly being added, which creates a narrative mess. Character development is almost non-existent (at the end of the 2nd season, everyone is still who they were at the start of the 1st). Although I canât prove it because Iâm not one of the creators, I get the overwhelming feeling that they donât actually have a plan, and are making up the story as they go along. In conclusion, I will not be listening to the 3rd season.

The characters are perfectly portrayed by their actors, truly the acting is above some other more expensive shows, like ones that rhyme with The Plack Bapes & Kanis. The creators did a great job of crafting a flavorful setting and the device of withholding information on said setting due to a character suffering from dementia is an excellent touch. This is the high point of Unwell. Unfortunately the characters (with the exception of Abby. Abby is great.) are some combination of bland and annoying. I listened to both seasons currently available hoping the characters would develop with the setting and left disappointed. Perhaps the creators were trying to make a point about the mundane life in small town America.

Would be great if I didn't feel they were pushing an agenda
This could have been a great podcast. But they are over the top obvious with the social justice agenda with the pronouns, etc.. It would be just as eye-rolling if they were pushing a religious god, god, god agenda. I guess in a sense social justice is a religion, so I should be just as accepting to that religion as I am to christianity. I just wish we could get to a point where people weren't proselytizing in podcasts. Or at least have a trigger warning ;)

I binged it in a few days and canât wait for more. Unique and unlikely anything else!
I listen to a lot of audio horror, and you begin to hear a lot of the same stuff when starting a new show Unwell broke all those tropes. Itâs a story with amazing characterization, and driven by the dynamics and relationships of said characters. It feels uncomfortably real, like you can find someone in your life who acts like one of the cast, and thatâs what makes this story so good, like the events and horror could be happening in that small town in your state. It moves much slower then whatâs normal for this genre but thatâs one of its strengths! If you want over the top obvious horror. This isnât for you. If you want the subtle existential horror that is sprinkled through its characters and how they face the situation, youâll love Unwell!

Oh man
I really tried to like this show and even made it through 7 episodes. I liked the overall storyline and didnât mind how slow it was but I found 90% of the characters insufferable. I tried to like it
The actual episodes/storyline are just not good. The story moves so slowly that I lost interest. I no longer care why any of it is happening. Plus, I would love for just one show/podcast/movie to not have the âsnarkyâ, flat, too cool for everything character (Abby). The trope was played out back when Daria was released in the 90s. And the momâs sass is cheezy and annoying. Everybody is unpleasant and I have a hard time caring about any of them. Great concept, terrible execution. Apart from the bad writing and mediocre acting, I have to forward through any part where Eleanor is speaking. Somebody else should read the ads and make announcements, her voice is so annoying that I want to shop at competitors.

Can I get my wasted time back?
This podcast failed to engage me. I have given up after four episodes. It should not take that long for a show to become interesting. Mediocre voice acting is brought down by bad writing. Overacting :(
A fiction podcast lives or dies on its cast, and the acting in this is just painful to listen to. Iâd call this a great audio drama. The vocals and sound effects are rich, the characters well developed. Great storytelling
I enjoy this podcast and find myself wanting to binge through it, listening to episode after episode. However, Iâd like the team to work on leveling the audio. The host intro, and the end of the podcast with the music and cast reading off their names is considerably louder than the actual story. This podcast is amazing! It is so beautifully written and acted. The characters have a lot of depth and the slow build of the horror is so good and really chilling and suspenseful once it gets going. Audial Art Work
This show uses profound characterization and convincing interpersonal interactions while developing a unique and really quite lovely story line. It provides wholesome relationships, heartwarming romance, and deeply explores family dynamics that Iâve yet to see portrayed in a medium such as this. The antagonists are cloaked in mystery enough to leave you guessing about their character, intentions, and background while providing what feels like a high stakes competition with âThe Gangâ very time they interact. This show is wonderfully unique and quite incredible, itâs suitable for most ages and doesnât fail to entertain, make you ask questions, or contemplate deep themes. It represents historically marginalized groups and gives them a voice and personal identities. I love this show dearly and I canât wait to hear Season 3.

One of the most phenomenally written and produced audio dramas I've ever heard. This is one of the weird podcasts for me. Originally I liked this podcast and it was mostly a filler my in between my favorite podcasts. I was wrong. Shame on me. I kid you not, I have re-listened to this podcast 8 times. No exaggeration. Every time I run out of something to listen to I find myself listening to the old episodes about this one. I think its because I feel like I find something I missed every time I give it another go. I highly recommend it. Its got mystery and homeliness to it. Something about it just puts me at easy and leave me really intrigued. Give it a shot or two. I didnât realize how good it really was till I gave it another goal. This needs to be binged listened to in order to truly appreciate it.

3 episodes in...very disappointing
I was thrilled to find a gothic mystery podcast and the overall good rating had me thinking this would be great. Alas, 3 episodes in and still scarce signs of the gothic and/or mystery themes. Episodes are too short for such a slow buildup [if there is even a point thematic material is presented]. It wouldâve been better to have one longer episode with the slow buildup with a hook at the end to pique the listenerâs interest and have them continue to the second episode. Writing is also little simplistic....

Itâs ok
The biggest issue I am having is getting past the fact that âkidsâ are voiced by adults. It almost seems that Lily and Dots actresses need to swap roles. Maybe the casting is just off? Otherwise itâs pretty good so far, 3 episodes in.

Amazing!
I love this show. It is the first podcast that Iâve ever REALLY been into. The story is amazing and the characters are great. I listen to a few other podcasts regularly. But what makes this one feel special to me is that I never have to worry about any of the â-ismsâ creeping in. These guys are amazingly socially conscious and it makes their great story that much better. Please keep it going! I just subscribed to the patreon and I cannot wait for more.

Gothic simmer at best.
First and foremost, Unwell must be applauded for itâs inclusion of LGBTQIA characters, and done so seamlessly. The story itself is a nice slow burn of small town with secrets. At 20-30 minutes an episode, you learn another clue about the town of Mt. Absalom by the end of an episode. However, weâre currently halfway through season 2 at the time of this review, and as much as Iâve enjoyed the character building aspects of the slow pacing of the storytelling, I do wish we were closer the core mystery or had tighter subplots. At this pace itâll be 2021 before we get anywhere.

Dramatic, a little spooky, surprisingly sweet. The characters are unique, and the actors are just great, with a lot of range and different character arcs playing out over the episodes. It seems slow at first, but thereâs a lot packed in each episode. Ive listened to six episodes today alone, lol.

Eeeesh
Made it 3 episodes in. There is tough competition out there for audio dramas, especially now that so many have significant budgets. I think that puts this one at a severe disadvantage, because you can tell itâs closer to a community theatre group-level as opposed to a professional production. Nearly all of the voice actors sound the same (and many of them are voiced by one person), and âkidsâ are clearly voiced by 30-40 year old adults. Itâs hard to drop into the story because thereâs so much â and I hate to use this word â âcringeworthyâ lines/dialog. My hope is that they keep going, broaden the cast, and focus on the characters as opposed to making everyone a flat stereotype.

Sound design is fantastic! Everything else...
So many of us listened to this wanting it to be good story. The sound design is detailed and amazing, the large cast size should allow them to do what they want to do, and yet? This show falls flat. A majority of the main characters sound like they were written by an angsty teenager. The through line on most of their personalities is either snarky, overly emotionally reactive, or sarcastic. Itâs hard to listen to dialogue thatâs constantly ratcheting up over nothing. When it isnât doing that, itâs just aimless chatter demonstrating how quirky the characters are supposed to be. Speaking of? Thereâs essentially nothing going on in the plot. The story constantly hints at potential threads for a story and then drops them or has a heightened moment before everyone goes back to acting like it never happened. Season 2 and really nothing has changed. If you want an episodic that has amazing sound design, listen to The Directive.

Wonderful
One of my absolute favorite podcasts. Itâs atmospheric, continually building on the sense that something is not quite right, and the characters are caught on the edge of an underlying plot thatâs so much bigger than they imagine. As someone who grew up in small towns in southern Ohio, it feels... uncomfortably real. LGBT characters are respected by the storytelling and within the universe; some listeners take issue with this, but Iâm enjoying my chance to engage with midwestern gothic and ghosts and fairytales without some of the day to day bigotry I personally experience. Overall, listening to this podcast feels like a long drive on rural backroads just before a storm. Itâs beautiful, and I cannot wait for the tornado to finally touch down.

I wanted to like it
I wanted to like this but 2 episodes in and the main character is just awful. Her throwing out food like itâs nothing is infuriating. I turned it off when she went all food nazi and wouldnât let another character have an onion ring because the diner didnât have a health inspection sticker and proceeded to throw the whole bag of burgers and fries out the car window. The other character just accepted this even though sheâs been preaching about the environment and vegetarianism. It makes no sense.

Superb Radio Drama
I grew up listening to CBS Radio Mystery Theaterâlast of the radio dramas in the Golden Age styleâwhen I was supposed to be sleeping. Then came a long love affair with Art Bellâs voice and his showâs strange and creepy subject matter. Once the digital era made it possible to listen to vintage radio, I binged on horror, mystery, suspense, and crime with great delight, studying the work of many more great writers, announcers, voice actors, styles, and eras. This is the best of the vintage beautifully combined with the best of current tech and contemporary sensibilities. Madly in love with it. Canât believe it took me so long to find it, but glad I did. The heartland vibe is exactly right. Plus, each episode is wonderful in itself, but the long arc of the unfolding story is equally engaging. Great fun coming to know this place and these characters. Sigh. Happiness. Thank you to all who make this happen. Itâs a beautiful thing. Guessing I will listen to the whole more than once.

Iâm so stoked you are back with season 2! I listen to a lot of audio drama, and have a soft spot for supernatural stories. Love and Hate Relationship
This podcast reminds me of Prairie Home Companion, except I want to slap the characters for being constant brats. Iâm still listening because Iâm in so deep I just want to know if thereâs an actual spine-tingling story that emerges. The production is really good, and the story could be awesome; but itâs constantly sarcastic conversations made by pretentious politically correct characters. It ends up sounding mega cheesy. I tried
I tried, I really did. But this podcast falls victim to what to many other shows fall victim to these days. Political correctness and agenda over a good story. The voice acting is good, but they really should have cast a mother who doesnât sound like she is in her 20s.

You sometimes want to slap them.
As if I needed any other reason to loathe Middle America. The production quality is absurdly high, but many of the characters are idiots. I recently took a trip to Youngstown, and that trip and this podcast have made me decide that we no longer need Ohio. Letâs give Cleveland to Pennsylvania and relocate Cincinnati to somewhere outside of Appalachia, and sell the rest of the state as government surplus.

Lovely spooky dramedy
It took me a bit to get into the tone, knowing only the âmidwestern gothic mysteryâ tag line. Go into it expecting a relaxed small town/odd-couple/family dark comedy with genuinely affecting moments of emotion and a delightful helping of [very ghost tour guide voice] spooOOOoooOoky happenings and you shanât be disappoint. My only complaint is that itâs only half of a story at the end of season 1, the plague of many a fiction podcast. Iâd love at least a bit of a seasonal arc to be wrapped up before a cliffhanger. a slow-burning, eerie podcast
First off - yes, the first season is absolutely a slow burn. But it's absolutely worth it for the eerie, subtly built atmosphere it provides. There's a subtly eerie feeling I get from many episodes, where something unexplaiable happens all the time. And it's endlessly amusing to watch the characters confronted with the inexplicable. There's also one moment - I won't spoil it - that put me on the verge of tears (but, like, in a good way) towards the end of this season. I can't wait to see what they do next!

Tried and Done
I really tried to like this podcast mainly because I love gothic and gloomy fiction. The characters are unlikeable and the conversations annoying at best. I get enough sarcasm and cynicism without listening to it during my downtime. The most intriguing character is a teenage boy with a mysterious non-home. I kept listening mainly to find out where he went at night-is he a changling or something? But Lilly and Abby are terrible characters and I'll be honest here, the story resorts to 3-4 lesbian relationships for a draw from that pool of listeners. Really? In a tiny town in the middle of nowhere, the situation and genders are unbelievable. Done.

Very enjoyable
I didnât know what to expect with this podcast and the gothic tagline definitely sparked my attention. I love any story about a small town that has secrets. Iâve enjoyed the small âEaster eggsâ throughout the series. A bit of dialogue said in passing that makes you pause and think of its possible implications in the overall timeline/plot. The relationships between the characters is fraught at times and the voice actors convey the tension well. I only gave it 4 stars due to a complaint others have had. It is pretty difficult to catch everything when Iâm streaming it through my carâs speakers. Even at max volume. Looking forward to season 2!

Zzzz - Gave up

Lilly is way too condescending and rude. So is Abby. As soon as Lily arrived everyone greeted her in a friendly manner and she talked to them like they were idiots. She continues to do this for the rest of the story. She is dramatic with her "ughhhhs" as if she has a mental problem. It's annoying.

Good story, bad sound editing
Iâve never reviewed a podcast before, but I like this one and would be happy if it improved. The story so far is interesting and the voice actors are ok, although most of the female characters sound very similar with exception of Lilly. But the sound editing is so bad. Some of the effects are pretty realistic (swinging porch swing) while basic footsteps sound like hitting a weird synthetic footstep button on an old keyboard. The worst part is that the volume is so inconsistent. You have to keep your finger on the volume buttons through the entire episode. Most of the dialogue is too quiet to hear without turning the volume all the way up, but then a screeching door hinge will some other sound effect, music, etc will force you to turn the volume way down. If the producers could fix this it would be a very enjoyable podcast.

Mindless Banter
I kept listening, waiting for a turn in the story, but nothing really happens. Seems like the ending was some kind of premature cliff hanger. The voices were somewhat confusing too... the daughter sounds like she should be the mother and the mother sounds much younger than the daughter. All the characterâs personalities are interchangeable and the whole show was full of mindless banter that didnât add anything to story. This made parts painful to listen too. For no reason, the daughter (main character) has a chip on her shoulder the whole time. Why? This also made listening painful. Other than this first-draft-style writing, the story had potential, but waaay too many in dead ends in story. Advice: remove the mindless banter and instead tie together some of the âcliff hangersâ. This may add more meaning to story.

First off, I tried really hard to keep listening through all of the snarky comments and unrelenting bickering. The writer was clearly a millennial with a âunholier than thouâ attitude... I couldnât make it past episode 5. The storyline dragged. The characters were unlikeable. The upside, kudos to the sound engineer... the sound effects were convincing... Of course if you do make eye contact with it, it might think youâre food. Was all food once rude? Is that how one transitions to food, from a state of rude? A misbegotten attitude? A mood that was all too lewd, human feelings gone from clothed to nude, a boorish, boring, boardroom feud? And what is the state of rude, is it Ohio? An Ohio inside a Chicago? Oh me! oh my!! oh no - oh WOAH!!! A puzzle box inside a puzzle box to be sure. The only way to solve it is to put your body in it and start playing. Does it have a solution? Do you care if it doesnât? Itâs about the play not the victor-ay. Youâre filling time, filling time while you decide to make eye contact with it or not. Choose. But it keeps my interest enough to keep listening, hoping something happens. Might be 4-star, but I took away 1 Star for the ant-American BS they spew at the end of each episode.

A Lovely Slow Burn
While slow, I really love that this podcast is taking the time to develop the characters and the sense of mystery. Most story podcasts I listen to don't really do this. Sound quality and acting is top notch as well, I can tell everyone apart which is not something I can say for every podcast.

ZZZZZZZ....
Does anything happen? It's fun to listen to as it's well produced. The problem is the obsession to make the characters quirky and cool makes them unreal and boring. And nothing happens. Please try harder. There's a lot of talent here.

I really liked this podcast
I liked the story a lot!. And I totally loved the non-binary character! I think I read a review on here that wasnât fond of the liberal presence in a small townâimplying that it doesnât happen and these people donât exist there. It totally does! And I loved the representation. Also quite a few times I actually LOLd. âHave fun at your meat partyâ âItâs a meat raffle!â This was fun. Thank you!

Another show invaded by liberal nonsense
The show is slow to the jump, to many personalities with hidden agendas. Another show about a small town yet riddled with gay characters. Also the end talks about occupied land. I think you donât understand the difference between occupied and conquered.

too short, too few and far between
i am thoroughly enjoying the story, although honestly nothing has really happened yet. but thereâs the promise that it will. itâs quirky and funny as well. BUT thereâs 3-4 weeks between episodes, which is too long - and then they are only 20 minutes long, which is too short!!

Follow the Breadcrumbs
The story starts slow but the music and sound design build wonderfully, the cast of characters is diverse and authentic, and the setting is a character all on its own. I cannot wait for more and love the land acknowledgement at the end of each episode. Iâm going to do the same in my podcast.

To Be Decided
Wonât lie the story doesnât advance a whole lot in the first season. I mean, the conflict of the story only barely peaks out. They havenât even really established the background of the main characters, not sure why Iâm supposed to be interested in them yet. Still though, itâs a quick listen, easy to binge, and there far worse podcasts to listen to out there. 3/5 but hopeful for some season 2 story development. Whatâs up with that restricted collection

OK
This is mildly interesting but the characters all sound the same, itâs impossible to figure out who is talking because the âelderlyâ mom sounds younger than the daughter. Makes the dialog very hard to follow, unless that ends up being the twist...

This is a slowburn mystery, very well-written and the actors are great. The music is fantastic. I honestly am not sure where it is going yet, but I am definitely coming back for more. Can't wait for season 2!

ASTOUNDINGLY unlikable characters.
Itâs as if someone challenged them to take the PRO out of protagonist. The main character imposes her neurotic behavior on every other character, at one point throwing everyoneâs dinner out a car window. And then she somehow becomes even LESS likable! The show has a staunch pro-Native American liberal perspective which is great, but it feels like the writers have other, personal agendas because why else would they focus so much on non-essential bickering and random characterization? Start moving the story along! Also it would be great if the voice actors were more naturalistic and sounded less like enthusiastic vaudeville or old time radio players. You donât need to reach the back row, dude! ;) Criticisms notwithstanding, I feel like the story has the potential to be very compelling.

....but the characters need to be slapped on the regular...OMG. The guy that works at the boarding house is irritating AF, and the main characters mother? Wow, she would test the patience of our Savior himself. I think it has potential, but there needs to be more plot development, more story details. Right now, the story seems very topical and doesn't really seem to do much. From the title, I'm not sure where in the story there is any "midwestern Gothic"....maybe season 2 (if there will be one) will be better?

Itâs just OK
The story is interesting, but a little slow to get going. Voice actors can get annoying at times (lots of whining and childish arguments between adults, but that could be the writing) and some of the actors seem inexperienced. Main character isnât written to be very likable and often comes off as way too condescending, even for the story. Once you hit the second half of episode 4, it starts to get more interesting. Looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Eh
Looked promising but the way characters interact with each other really rubs me the wrong way. This is probably personal preference but when the main characterâs patronizing attitude makes you shudder to hear it, its difficult to get through. I donât mind a slow burn but Iâm three episodes in and all Iâve heard is the characters be unnecessarily rude to each other.

Great storyline-suspense and mystery building up...
Fantastic sound design and effects. I am caught on the intriguing story and the characters; I canât help but get a bit annoyed by Lily whom seems to have a contemptuous and accusatory tone in her attitude and voice, though at times she seems defensive as weâll. That is the only reason why I gave it 4 stars. Besides that, this is a wonderful podcast that has definitely caught my attention.

Bold character choices
Though at times the humor seems a bit over the top clownish for the dark tone, unwell makes up for it with a host of very off-the-beaten-path character types in a creepy ohio town, all of whom seem Unwell. Whats up with that? Cant wait for the celery festival...?

Excellent sound crafting, good acting, lonely and suspenseful
Unwell is right on the edge between suspeseful, funny, and sad; a perfectly absurd tale of renewal in Middle America. The sound design, voice acting, and clever use of songs have made me listen to the same episodes several times over. This is an excellent example of what audio can be. Grab a celery soda and an old afghan and snuggle up with a friend for a tale about loneliness and community.

Waiting for plot to catch up to the amazing sound design
3.5 stars. Unwell might be the best sounding podcast I've ever heard. Truly rich, layered and textured sound design. And I dare you to listen to that teaser trailer and not immediately hit the subscribe button. I have listened to the first five episodes and I'm still waiting for the plot to get moving. I'm okay with a slow burn, but we're halfway through the season it's still unclear what the driving conflict or mystery is. I trust that the show will ultimately get there, but we still haven't achieved the promise of the premise.

Brand New and Already A Startling Success
I loved this show right off the bat, and now by episode 5 itâs become an engaging story with fascinating and likeable characters, and itâs full of chilling foreshadowing to keep you waiting for the next episode to be released! I especially like that the show takes time to acknowledge that the United States is occupied land, and recognizes the indigenous peoples who lived and are living in the areas where the show takes place and is written. This is such an important thing to acknowledge and draw attention to and I hope others will follow!

Delightfully spooky
These first two episodes have been an absolute smash hit for me. Lily is hilarious about the food safety thing, an aspect Iâve always desperately wanted in a character without even realizing it. Abbie and their SNARK is wonderful, Dotâs stubborn streak is a mile wide and absolutely brilliant, and overlaying it all so far is shadows of creepiness, goosebumps, and mystery. Cannot wait to see more! My only criticism thus far is some of the sound mixingâmany of the cool extra sound effects they have in the background can be pretty overwhelming volume-wise, and Iâm not sure if itâs because I wasnât using headphones or what, but be wary of startlingly loud sounds (especially near the end of the second episode!)

Already Terrifying
Between the teasers leading up to the premiere and the two episodes already out, this show is promising to terrify the listener. Iâm adore the world that is being fleshed out. The dynamics between everyone are believable and beautifully written. Also, the sound design is immaculate. Every episode I make sure to have both headphones in to make sure I can experience every detail.

- Feed Drop: Where the Stars FellHello- Jeffrey here. Today, weâre excited to share a show from the Fable and Folly Network that we think you might enjoy- Where the Stars fell. This is another American Gothic show- though set in the Pacific Northwest rather than in the Midwest. Itâs a wonderful story that centers of themes of identity and choice- and for me, I was sold on the imaginative, strange world- a joy to lose yourself in. Enjoy this first episode of the show, and head to your podcatcher of choice to hear the rest of the story! Now- enjoy the first episode of Where the Stars Fell Where the Stars Fell is a production of Caldera Studios, and is produced and written by Newton Schottelkotte. The voice of Mama Gabe was Kiera Gill. The voice of Lucille Kensington was Madelyn Harvieux. The voice of Dr. Edison Tucker was Newton Schottelkotte. The voice of Mike Elle was Kyle Street. Script edits were done by Lucy Brown, with a sensitivity read by Kit Addams.
