Fantastic
I love this show. Amy & Paul’s insights and differing perspectives are thought provoking. They’ve changed how I think about film. It’s all killer no filler, unless they’re talking about music/musicians. But that’s ok, this isn’t a music show after all.

Awful editing
Great podcast but the editing is terrible. Lots of mistakes in cutting lines and glitches. One of the worst edited pro podcasts. Last episode (Oscar’s 2022) cuts off mid sentence. Fire the editor, some of these recent episodes are unlistenable.

Fantastic but…
Absolutely fantastic adult discussion on film. Love the healthy disagreements. But I have to agree with the comments criticizing the misguided and clunky SJW (woke) overlay just so self-satisfied and sanctimonious.

Blue Velvet
I watched Blue Velvet several months ago or maybe sometime during the pandemic, I can’t remember—time is ruined! But I’m still thinking about this movie months after watching it and decided to look for a movie pod that could articulate what it is about this film that makes it feel so impactful. The episode was super insightful and interesting. I’m a new fan! Great episode! Thank you!

Learned so much
I’m assuming people are complaining about this podcast because it acknowledges issues issues like feminism, racism, sexism structural inequality, power dynamics and other concepts that Upset the Public despite the fact they are often critical to a director and writer’s vision and central to the plot. Some might say this is what defines a good film from a great one, but this is also Upsetting to the Public. As for myself, I love this podcast and the length is really suitable for running, taking a long walk, or when you’re trapped on a long haul flight. I’ve also learned a lot! Hope they keep going and would love to see some more world cinema at some point because I am selfish and want to learn more about non western directors.

Good but not woke enough
This podcast is quite enjoyable to listen to. I like the deep dive analysis and the fun discussion between the two hosts. I would give this 5 stars if the male host would stop being so not woke enough. It's a film podcast but he feels the need to in constantly inject his not far left enough ideology onto movies. Let's keep the conversation around movies and not your smug, rich, California viewpoints.

Wise Up
Thank you for discussing the very complex movie that is Crash. A few points: Although it’s not a movie that makes it’s point well, it does make a points. 1) Systemic racism will always be a cycle. The imagery of the cars crashing, the first scene and the last, alludes to the inevitable force of racism and how it rear ends you. You don’t see it coming but it makes a huge impact. 2) Aimee Mann does sing Wise Up which is an absolute call for action. So Amy, I know you want to give this movie the credit of being ambiguous, but the song is literally telling you to take notice. 3) Paul- I agree this isn’t an allegory but it is a fable. A heighten story that captures the hypocrisy of racism and the consequences. We the viewers see the excess of racism but these characters are only aware of an instant. A micro aggression that goes too far.

Great podcast
This is a really great podcast if you enjoy movies and movie criticism. Really insightful with fun conversations about movies and pop culture. They make some really awesome movie choices so they are always talking about something different than just the latest blockbuster. While I don’t always agree with Amy or Paul’s opinions on movies, I always enjoy their differing perspectives. They are a delight. From my review of some of the other reviews on here, I guess this podcast isn’t going to be your thing if you are some poor MAGA incel. But who knows, maybe this will convert you. Good luck and may the force be with you.

True masters of culture and class
So…. I listen to a healthy amount of podcasts. I decidedly do NOT tend to rate and/or review. (I know, I know, I am the lowliest of low-lifes) I’ve been a faithful follower of HDTGM since around 2014. This past decade of fighting cancer has been so much more enjoyable thanks to the likes of the Howdies and the sister-pod- UNSPOOLED. Specifically, I’m going to have to call out Mr. Paul-Tall-John Sheer. As if opining on LOST in a succinct, favorable, and *ahem* correct way wasn’t enough… you were also able to make one of the best critical analysis of The Last Jedi I’ve had the pleasure of hearing (and sharing for each). These 5 stars are so well deserved, I’m sincerely considering creating a ghost Gmail account to give yous all even more kudos! A sincere thank you, for all the hours of entertainment

Fun but obnoxious?
I love the insight and deep dives into different films. The conversation is usually pretty awesome and I always learn something. That being said, sometimes the hosts overuse a socio-political lens and insert meaning into things where there probably isn’t any. I do love the show, but it seems as though there’s a strange strain of pretentious condescension that I don’t really like. Both Amy and Paul occasionally make statements that imply or infer that audience members who do not agree with them or their opinions are either ignorant or just bad people. Additionally, both tend to look down on the sort of “middle America” viewers in a lot of ways. Its pretty patronizing.

Out of touch
Just listened to The Dark Knight episode which unfortunately went completely off the rails with lunatic political takes from both hosts. You cannot boil good and evil down to republicans and democrats. Anyone who thinks you can is hopelessly brainwashed and completely out of touch with reality. YOU, the hosts, along with the rest of Hollywood and establishment media are the ones forcing the choice between the two barges, and the everyday people of America are the passengers who decide not to take your bait. What a disaster of a podcast.

Listen to this Pod - obviously
Paul and Amy (we’re on a first name basis) are fun and into it. You’ll feel like you’re sitting in ear shot of two people that love the movie as much as you do and know WAY more about it. The episodes include movie clips and other relevant audio. For me it’s not a don’t miss an episode kind of pod but I subscribe to see what they’re up to. I’m hoping they’ll do a Snatch episode. Some say (or at least one person said to me) that it’s Brad Pit’s best performance.

Did Amy even watch Heat?
Writing this review on the one episode I listened to. For the record, I love film critique podcasts. Amy’s “commentary” absolutely ruined it. Vapid and empty. Fully devoid of any actual knowledge of film. No insight into cinematography techniques, scoring, or storylines. Did she even read a book from film school? Poor Paul tried to pull an intelligent thought out of her but he just couldn’t.

podcast undercut by host’s political beliefs
I enjoy listening to Amy , whereas I find Paul a little annoying sometimes and he can sound like he’s on meth. When their politics, particularly Paul’s, are forced into their film discussions it can be more than a little off-putting.

Your critic is showing
Amy. I have had to turn off multiple episodes and switch to others because your short sighted critiques absolutely ruined my listening experience. When you like or love a movie, you provide so much detail it’s a joy. When you don’t, my god woman. I can’t even get remotely on board. Gain some perspective or just do something objective and add cool facts about the movie instead of droning on. Paul- killin it.

This should just be Amy’s podcast
I wish Amy ran this podcast alone. She doesn’t need Paul. He has no curiosity for any point of view that isn’t his own, including the point of view of the filmmakers themselves. He talks over Amy to an excruciating degree. He has no patience or appetite for cinema. And I don’t understand why this overqualified woman has to be paired with a deeply unqualified man.

Great idea, not so great execution
Paul and Amy have very different ways of talking about movies, that should be a plus but it makes the show hard to listen to sometimes. Personally I find Amy grating, she doesn’t seem to listen to the conversation so much as wait for her turn to talk, it sounds like she’s reading lines rather than participating in a dialog. Paul has his flaws but he sounds interested in what’s going on, I wish it went both ways. Blew my mind to find out she’s a film critic as her day job.

I just love this podcast so much
Every episode is like listening into a conversation between two friends who are very knowledgeable about films. Amy and Paul are not afraid to get very personal and share how a movie applies to their lives which often deepens my understanding or appreciation of a movie. I hope this podcast never ends.

I love this podcast
I only recently discovered it, and really enjoy the conversations about movies that I’ve enjoyed. I had no idea there was so much to know about movies like “Little Shop of Horrors,” a personal favorite. And I enjoyed the discussion of “that scene” in Swingtime. I remember seeing that movie (not for the first time) in a theater in Cambridge, Mass, and feeling the silent discomfort emanating from the very white, bookish, liberal members of the audience. It’s hard to watch! Anyways, keep ‘em coming.

Paul Scheer Ruins this Podcast
Look, I’m going to be honest here, I’ve listened to a lot of Unspooled and there is not a single episode that is not diminished, lessened, confused, or just plain ruined by Paul Scheer. I am sure he is a good person and this isn’t a personal attack, but I feel bad for Amy and all the Unspooled listeners that they have to wade through his deeply unconsidered and often borderline nonsensical comments. Amy is a film goddess and all stars are for her. I am well aware due to the two-person format of this show Paul will never be kicked off, but I guess I will just continue to do my best to fast forward through everything he says while fondly dreaming of a world in which Amy is paired with some other intelligent host that actually matches her.

Why so much political talk?
I love you, Paul and Amy and I really enjoy your podcast, but I can’t help but notice that more and more episodes feature politics. To be honest, I don’t listen to your podcast to hear about politics and current events when I listen to an episode on the dark night I don’t really feel like hearing about Trump and abortion laws, I’m more interested in hearing about the film and the deeper meanings, which have nothing to do with things that happened in 2020 or 2022.

Paul Sheer’s face is what you see when you look up the word cuckold. Still not the worst part of the podcast. That distinction would have to go to “film critic” Amy Nicholson whose contribution to the show could be done using a vocal fry dummy with a pull string repeating phrases misogyny, empowerment, racism. A wanna be Lisa Simpson, obnoxious know-it-all who gets it wrong, very wrong. Think more Meg Griffin. She infuses whatever NPC, woke virtue-signaling into the discussions that have little relevance to the film. Steadfast in her contradictions. Hipster film critic who shills movies that push agenda over actual craft or merit. Reeks of liberal elitism and completely out-of-touch. There's little reason to listen to the show, every opinion the hosts share is perdictable. While trying to appear a hipster contrarian nearly every opinion Amy shares is what you would expect to hear on any NPR program. A comedian who's not funny and never challenges the cohost and a film critic that biased and ignorant of films. How did This Get Made has some charm this has none.

Amazing Podcast, no mor QT
QT is obviously a great film maker, but Christ on a cracker he’s obnoxious. I hate that he kept interrupting Amy and explaining why she was wrong. I hate that he have himself credit for movies split into two parts. I hate that he kept screaming into the microphone with not a single thought of what the experience would be like to listen to the actual product/podcast for us the little people. Tarantino is insufferable
Love the podcast but I will not be listening to Quentin Tarantino’s. He’s so annoying. He’s completely in love with himself and can’t wait to talk (or shriek) again. Amy = Negatibity
Really want to like this pod but often find it exhausting and dragged out by a consistent attitude of negativity/dislike of the films they watch. Every episode, I’m just waiting for the moment Amy shares her obscure critiques. Also, Amy… do you like/enjoy any of the movies you and Paul review? If you do like one, can you at least fake excitement/joy from it. Basically, I feel like Paul is a fun and outgoing critic/reviewer of movies who finds joy in the films, with fair criticisms, and good perspectives. Amy, on the other hand, feels like she majored in 14th Century French poetry (with a minor in 1900’s Italian silent films) and somehow ended up a film critic with little ability to relate to widely enjoyed popular, modern films. Paul, love you and your crew on HDTGM, but this seems beneath your style. Amy, maybe consider drinking some wine while watching a movie you review, chill out, stop looking for deep, negative sub-texts in movie plots that aren’t there. This pod is unfortunately a GRIND to get through. It needs to be more fun, less analytical, requires more energy and each episode trimmed in regards to length. Hope you both find the right recipe because there’s potential here. Good luck!

Amy is unbearable
Listen to this podcast if you want to feel good about your ability to analyze a film. Amy has the most nonsensical opinions on movies that are often unsupported by facts. Her takes are baffling. I get the feeling she doesn’t actually watch the movies for the podcast but just tries to remember tidbits she may have picked up second hand.

Sometimes fun
I often find Amy’s critiques confusing. I don’t know if she is just trying to be contrarian, but some of her takes are very strange. A lot of these reviews mention her voice, but that is not something a person can control. She seems like a very well educated person who has a hard time relating to other people that haven’t had the same privilege has her in their upbringing. I still listen when the episode is a movie I like, but I find it so hard to relate when Amy turns the podcast into a high school debate/philosophy class.

A mixed bag
There’s some good things and some not so good things about this podcast. On the positive side: I generally like Paul’s takes on a movie. And when Amy sticks to what is actually happening in the movie I generally enjoy her takes as well. The two hosts seem to have good chemistry and I don’t agree with other reviews that one is interrupting the other. On the negative side: on the majority of shows I have listened to Amy finds a way to force some kind of feminism or toxic masculinity subtext into apparently every movie ever made. They also have found ways to shoehorn politics in movie discussions. Give it a break. Overall the negative aspects keep me from subscribing and listening regularly.

Love the show
I’ve been listening since the beginning, but recently I’ve noticed Paul starting to interrupt more and more and I wish he would just take a beat to listen instead of quickly coming back with a counterpoint that at least comes off like it’s half a thought. I think they both have great points but Paul tends to not really listen during sections when their point of view differs and cuts Amy off to make a rebuttal, it’s not always but it’s distracting when it occurs.

Processing art to process life
Thank you Amy and Paul! I love your conversational dynamic. The show is made so interesting in part because of your differing perspectives. Another important part is that although you each have unique opinions, you’re great at listening to the other and being willing to try to see the other’s point. If you both agreed on everything the show wouldn’t be as rich and 3-dimensional as it is. You’re both great and this show helps me dive so much deeper into film as an art form and as a way to understand and process the complicated world around us. Thank you for going into the depths of these films: their history, how they were made, and your take on their significance. It makes watching and/or re-watching these movies a much richer experience.

Does Amy even enjoy watching movies? The concept of this is great. Paul has a clear love and enthusiasm for movies. Amy seems to take the modern approach of finding every classic overrated. Sorry Paul see you back at HDTGM
Cool show premise with one good host & one that makes it unlistenable. Amys overall attitude, cringeworthy voice & knack for shoehorning her feminist “trauma” angle into EVERY episode is unbearable. She’s an actual film critic outside of the show which is pretty surprising, this might just not be a format that compliments her skill set. Sorry Paul see you back at HDTGM.

Cool idea but should be better. Amy is exhausting and not in a good way. She is generally negative towards these films. Luckily, Paul views these films with a wider lens and can find fun and interesting things to discuss.

I’m going to turn this car around and give up on this podcast all together. The bickering has become excessive. State your case and move on. I’m not taking sides...but it is notable that one is a professional critic. Always glad to see misogyny is still going strong. Your listeners are gross.

Tough to listen
Paul is amazing as usual. As others have mentioned, Amy’s vocal fry is nearly impossible to listen to. Do you guys listen to this after you record? I am a liberal, feminist woman but find Amy’s takes on almost everything to miss the mark to such a degree I can’t relate and listen any more because it’s so bad. She doesn’t seem to either have enough maturity or life experience (or both) to understand a lot of things happening in movies. Specifically relationships and their context. So her interpretation always seems VERY far off. It’s a shame since Paul has great insights to share.

Podcast has potential…
But I find Amy’s contributions to be distracting if not detracting from the experience. I can’t seem to finish an episode. Most recently I tried listening to the Jurassic park episode and her takes were just ridiculous. “Safety is overrated” “it’s ok to die in an amusement park because it’s fun!”. 🙄🙄 Amy is very narrow in her arguments and seems incapable of having nuanced discussions.

I feel bad but I can’t stand Amy
Paul I love ya! You keep it fun and positive. Amy is a nightmare. I was a day one listener and I continued listening for a long time even though her voice is grating. Not her fault but she sounds fake and forced. And she is terrible at setting Paul up to give facts (they seem to have some conversation planned out ahead of time for that) now I listen sporadically but end up turning the show off halfway through. Amy is so negative! And about the strangest stuff. I feel like any popular movie she hates it. But she will let Paul talk about how great it is and then say really, you like it? And her reasons for something being bad are so far fetched I can’t get on board. If you want to listen to someone ruin a movie, listen to Amy.

I have loved this podcast for awhile and seriously love a good debate! Paul is an awesome host and I love how he’s able to pivot and see all sides but still come out with a funny or positive wrap up. However…it has gotten to the point where I’m having to turn it off prematurely as of late because of Amy’s negativity. It’s a lot. She seems you genuinely have zero ability to find anything but the dark aspects of films she even claims to like. Please Amy, listen and maybe see that although it’s really easy to find flaws, it’s more interesting to find something good in something flawed. I don’t usually leave long reviews but as a creative (I make costumes for a living) I like to listen to podcasts between fittings and dance breaks and really want to keep y’all in my rotation. Best to you both and find some silver linings, Tiffy

Love the idea, hate the execution
I love Paul and love the idea of going back through classic movies and putting a rating on them. Everything is so woke it’s ridiculous, I feel like no one can just appreciate classic movies, someone always has to be a victim. Amy's voice and all of her opinions are absurd, Paul is the only redeeming thing about this. I don’t always agree with him but at least he’s entertaining and sensible

I’ve been listening from the beginning and generally have enjoyed the conversations, especially around the AfI list. However, I’ve been really not enjoying their movie selection since then. Gender in The Graduate
Five stars for the overall show, but in case Amy reads this… I don’t care very much for The Graduate either. But in response to every comment you made about her “not having reasons” to be with Dustin Hoffman and that they suddenly “made her a monster,” she was a monster from the beginning. We established that in the first twenty minutes. If a man had manipulated someone into their home, stripped naked and refused to let them leave after countless times saying no and begging to be allowed to leave… he would be irredeemable from that point on. She is a sexual predator. Women can be those. Her reasons were control. Spouting off that there was “no reason” is problematic at best. Thank you for reading if you did.

Flashes of fun
There are moments this podcast is amazing and brings out my love of movies. Then Amy comes around with her simplistic political takes. It is so frustrating because that is not what this is about or conversely she only does it in a forum like this where she can’t be challenged. McConnell is the person to blame for not addressing climate change in a podcast about Nightmare on Elm Street??? If you’re going to address a serious issue like climate change then actually take it seriously and comment about China and India otherwise it continues to make us look like political hacks and not on point with the issue. She comes off as so much in a bubble and a product of a society that is the only society around where someone like her can exist as she does. She can have some interesting takes that challenge the status quo and then blows it with ham handed political takes or blind gender takes. I take a month or two off from time to time because of this, but keep coming back because when it stays about movies there are few podcasts better.

Amy is, without a doubt, the worst film critic in America. She can’t objectively judge a film, which is the primary requirement of her profession. Paul is great as always, and this would be a solid podcast with a different cohost.

Great podcast from two pros who know their stuff. Decent Podcast for Movie Buffs
I enjoyed it most when they were going over the AFI top 100. It seems the goalposts have changed for the show however. It went from let’s find the best 100 movies of all time to diversity is more important for the list than quality. They recently decided that Bridesmaids and Ganja and Hess should be on top 100 of all time while removing Jaws and Raiders. I enjoyed the movies but give me a break.

Mostly perfect
I’ve been listening to this show since about halfway through the AFI top 100 list. And you know what? It’s pretty great. Amy brings a thoughtful, nuanced, and yet balanced perspective to each discussion. Paul brings the levity and energy. I appreciate that neither are hesitant to share their honest reactions to these films. Sometimes I expect them to love a movie, but when they don’t, I learn how to be more critical and to expect more from the movies I watch. Sometimes I expect them to hate a film. But when they don’t, I learn how to see past my pretentious nit-picks and find value where I’d originally missed it. One concern: I’d prefer Paul not interrupt Amy as much. It makes some episodes hard to finish. I appreciate the opinions of both hosts, so it is upsetting when Paul completely cuts her off. Overall, it’s definitely my favorite movie podcast. Thanks to Paul and Amy for putting together a great show!

Top Five Podcasts
If you love movies, this is the gold standard movie podcast. In college I picked up a minor in cinema studies. Post graduation this show helps scratch that itch. Amy’s POV brings back memories of some of my favorite professors. I feel like I should be paying tuition for her insights. Paul is also great, he’s the enthusiastic film buff who you could talk to for hours after watching something new and exciting. If I were to offer constructive criticism of the show it would be sometimes Paul tends to interrupt Amy. I don’t think it’s conscious but it can be a bit of a let down when you know she’s on to something profound. Outside of that, this show is perfect. I really hope they do an episode on A Woman Under The Influence and The Grand Illusion at some point!

sad to give this one up. loved earlier episodes but i can't with amy anymore. lady english major here: it's gesture not guessture. no, it's not gesture because the "man" told you how to say it, there's no history of the patriarchy forcing us to say words a certain way. you don't sound intelligent. she threw shade on john krasinski recently for no reason at all and i realized how allergic i am to amy. get paul a better cohost that sometimes likes things. it's one thing to be critical, but she's a caricature of a feminist who uses movies to gatekeep what she approves of as feminism. i would love a movie podcast that unspools the making of, the trivia behind the scenes and dissection of great performances and other aspects that went into making these great films. it's okay to talk about movies that don't hold up but the show has turned into nothing but dissecting what makes beloved movies not so great.

Normally I listen to true crime and I mean A LOT of true crime. I needed something to cater to my love of movies and my geeking out about behind the scenes info. Then I discovered Unspooled! I love Paul from his banter from VH-1’s “I Love” Series so I knew this was going to be good. I’ve only listened to a few episodes & I love every second of it. Great discussions
Though I have been listening on and off since the start of the podcast focused around the AFI 100, this is my first review. From the start, I have enjoyed the differing perspectives that Amy (movie critic, journalist, woman) and Paul (actor, movie buff, man) bring to their discussions on specific movies. However, it feels like the newer (the most recent year of this podcast) format of picking genres and reviewing various movies for each has further elevated the conversations between these two hosts. For example, Amy blew my mind when she suggested we try to imagine a Spielberg-free movie world. (An amazing exercise.) And their takes on blockbuster movies has been fascinating. If you enjoy movies and talking/thinking about them, then this podcast is a must. Thank you Amy, Paul, and the Unspooled team. Robert

Thank you Amy!!
I look forward to this podcast every week, even when I don’t like the movie! Paul is a great host, and I love his perspective as someone who is enthusiastic about all kinds of movies. The person I really have to thank, though, is Amy. Her critiques have challenged a lot of my own opinions and have made me a smarter (and I hope more sophisticated) watcher of movies. Having listened to nearly every episode of this podcast (I’ve skipped some of the horror ones that I’m too chicken to watch), I still find Amy’s takes to be fresh, and I’m always excited to hear her discussion with Paul. I don’t have a lot of friends who are interested in movies, and listening to this makes it feel like I’m part of a little movie club! It really helps broaden your film horizons - give it a listen!

Paul is good, Non-Paul is not
Oh boy, this podcast is exhausting thanks to Non-Paul. She takes the fun out of the every movie, like she’s writing a thesis on them. Paul on the other hand is light-hearted, open-minded, and down to have a fun time diving deep in these movies. When Paul speaks, it’s fresh and organic, but Non-Paul sounds so rehearsed and smug. It’s an odd pairing for sure. Replace Non-Paul with Casey Wilson and it would be dynamite.

The Searchers podcast review
The two hosts are obviously intelligent. But how are you going to express that “The Searchers” was not a game changer or very different right after admitting you had never seen a John Wayne or John Ford movie before it. If you haven’t seen Stage Coach or Red River before it, how would they know it was not a game changer with out context of previous westerns that were themselves game changers. Before Stage Coach, westerns we’re basically B movie/serials. It’s fine if you don’t like “The Searchers” but don’t give an expert review on it if you have bias of modern sensibilities with out seeing any Western before it. It’s like someone never having seen a movie before 1990 complaining that Wizard of Oz looks dated or moves slow. Both these movies existed many many years before I was born but I understand things like pacing, rear projection, acting styles are going to be different for various reasons in the 30’s and 50’s. I found the podcast angering. I probably would enjoy their episodes of more modern movies though. Review just of episode not podcast.

If you love movies…
This is a fun podcast. I listen because I am a HDTGM fan and love Paul “Tall John” Sheer. Amy Nicholson has some hot takes that I disagree with frequently but she always explains them well. I am sometimes stunned by how many obvious things they miss or are mystified by which kills me sometimes. I yell at the podcast frequently lol. But I have watched all the AFI movies too and have strong takes and so I just love listening to people talk about movies even if it’s torture to not be part of the discussion.

Unsubscribing after two years
This show just isn’t what it used to be. Originally when they were going through the AFI 100 they would talk about the film they had watched, it was interesting and entertaining. Now Amy constantly (by constantly I mean several times each and every episode) compares the week’s movie to the Marvel movies. For a writer she almost never articulates her point well and is almost never factually correct. She calls out plot points that didn’t exists, misquotes dialog that didn’t happen. She is hellbent on comparing everything to this straw-man. I’m not some Marvel fanboy defending a billion dollar franchise that doesn’t need me to defend it. I’m annoyed that this is what every episode has become.

Hate to Agree With the Conservatives, But…
When Amy is complaining about/poorly rating classics like Goodfellas and Taxi Driver for being ads for toxic masculinity, and rates the all female Ghost Busters much higher than the original one, she’s really lost all perspective and objectivity. She’s a smart, considerate reviewer (I started listening to her Cannon pc years ago), but very liberally biased and trying to cancel old movies she doesn’t agree with politically. It’s a problem and I think this is partly why they’re pushing Dischord.

I said something negative about Amy’s (silly) words. Sorry Amy
Paul is great, he’s our ‘everyman’, and I love his takes on movies. While Amy is our real movie historian/reviewer and deserves respect despite what some hateful (anti-American) trolls claim her political ideas are driving her opinions, (as if we all don’t do that) but everything is politics really. When conservatives start pointing to SJW’s I wonder if they recognize their tolerance for fascism as thoroughly un-American as do most Americans. (it really is the majority opinion). If it weren’t for all the trolls in the reviews this would have the ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️’s it definitely deserves. Just go listen to OAN/Fox “News” and leave these American treasures alone.

I came here to read reviews to see if othes have commented on Amy’s voice. I was not disappointed. It’s not just up-speak, there is something more going on. One star for Paul
The one star is for Paul. He is open minded, not completely ruled by his politics. As a result his takes feel more authentic and honest. Amy on the other hand… her very left liberal America hating politics OBVIOUSLY inform her every thought about movies as well as everything else. She had little real life experience outside of her bubble. She doesn’t “love” “marginalized” people, she just hates anyone and anything right of center. I wish Paul could do it on his own.

Alien.
This is the only place I can find to respond to Paul and Amy’s discussion about Alien. I was 21 years old and just about to graduate from college when I saw this film. I had majored in literature so of course knew all about rounded characters. None of that mattered when Sigourney Weaver triumphed in the end. A woman in her underwear piloting the space ship home, the sole survivor, the leader, the winner. Paul, I’m sorry, but you’re a man, and your preference for The Thing over Alien is just anti-woman. You really can’t understand the impact Ripley’s triumph had on every young woman I knew. The underwear was so important! The vulnerability was essential, but the type of underwear was a combination of blue collar and aspirational - only very slender women like Sigourney Weaver could pull that underwear off. Great podcast, btw!

Amy yuck
I listen because I love movies, but Amy has so many issues with everything if it doesn’t meet her political views. Hollywood really should just keep their views and politics out of everything, they are losing fans. How can she judge a movie made many years ago, and put today’s over-woke views into her opinion of a film? I listen now only when it’s a favorite movie, she really is a turn off. They are gonna lose their audience with her attitude.

How
I wonder if there is a contract that keeps Paul with Amy, her views are understood and justified but recently are just too overbearing with movies I enjoy. I understand the necessity of taking a modern look at old movies, but it’s to the point that this podcast is mostly Amy being negative and Paul defending the movie. Also, it’s harder to listen to a solely white perspective especially on movies such as Hoop Dreams, would be nice to have special guests or specialists on topics like that.

Amy & Paul, you guys are fantastic! I love listening. I came to Unspooled a little late from How Did This Get Made and What Went Wrong, but I’m loving it. I particularly wanted to thank Amy for her recognition sharks’ ability to get into suburban bedrooms. I would not sleep with any covers after seeing several Jaws because I knew the sharks were in my bedding. I love sharks. I’ve been a diver for 25 years and actively seek out sharks all over the world, but bedroom sharks are not okay. Also, I’d put Jaws 3D slightly about Jaws The Revenge, but agree that Jaws 2 was terrible.

Love the banter and insight!
Just started listening and currently am working my way through the AFI 100 list along with Paul and Amy. This has become my favorite podcast, and I actually lol’d at their discord about Jack Warner judging films on how many times he would pee, never laughed so hard. Paul and Amy not only give their thoughts but also bring in great research and stories along with great special guests. Cannot wait to finish a movie on the list to listen to another episode!

One of my favorite podcasts
My husband and I started by watching the movies from the AFI that we had always wanted to see and then listening to the podcast. Then we decided to just start from the beginning and listen to them all in the order that Paul and Amy were listening. We have now seen 81 of the Top 100 and some of the other films Paul and Amy have done after the AFI list.

Informal but informed, and fun
I am liking that show. The 2 hosts have a good flow in their friendly discussion, they do not speak over each other, and they play interesting sound clips from the movies they discuss or experts they researched. Even if they make occasional errors or might have different opinions on the movies that me, they bring up great points into their reviews. And the sound of their voices is quite pleasant. I am really happy with that podcast!

Painful
The wokeness is unbearable. Paul gets every detail wrong (e.g. , Lady "Evelyn" from Mr. Rogers) and mispronounces normal words. Amy doesn't like Richard Linklater because his movies are too much from a "dude's" point of view. Social justice ruins this podcast, as it does everything. I enjoy hate-listening to this just for Paul's barely comprehensible perversion of like, you know, the English language. He should sue his English teachers. Amy is allegedly a movie critic but she doesn't know how to say Palme d'Or. Sad!

Enthusiastic
Mistake-ridden and little understanding of history, yet wide-eyed enthusiasm and a fresh take make this podcast worth listening to despite the cringes. quote from one of the hosts: "just like a reese's peanut butter cup, there is no wrong way to view this film." ummm. Full of "like" "you know" and "yeah I mean" filler. 20% shorter podcast if they leave out the verbal filler.

Pretty good
I like listening to this pod after watching a movie I’ve never seen before, and will continue to do so. However, I do tire of Amy Nicholson having hot takes for the sake of *unique*. For example, the Goodfellas episode in which she belabors Pesci’s age and the brother ad nauseum. There are tons of other episodes in which this occurs, but it is at its most irritating in that episode.

Best Movie Pod But ...
Incredible to me the films Paul and/or Amy hadn’t seen prior to the watch. (Forget re-watch.) On The Waterfront. The Best Years of Their Lives. The General. Still, it’s a very good movie podcast. The best. So much better than The ReWatchables with its snarky hosts and guests.

Thoroughly Engaging
Amy and Paul really put a lot of thought and effort into each episode. I don’t always agree with their opinions but their explanations are well reasoned and articulated. It’s just the right length for doing a deep dive (but not too deep) into a single film. I was slightly skeptical on if they could continue after season 1 but their approach to season 2 has been fresh and engaging.

Great for film lovers
Interesting conversation and they bring up a lot of good points that sometimes are not considered. All with a friendly quality that draws you into the conversation personally. And they have some excellent interviews. It’s inspired my girlfriend and I to go through the list as well, rolling the die for each film. For me it’s a return to movies I haven’t seen in 20 years or more sometimes, for her they’re almost all new. And this podcast ties it together nicely for us both.

This podcast has been such a joy since it launched
When I heard Amy Nicholson say on the /Filmcast that she and Paul share were starting this podcast, I knew I had to subscribe immediately. It has been a huge joy these last 2 1/2 years. When the show started there were about 15 of the AFI top 100 movies I have never seen, and it had been many years since I had seen some of them. Thanks to the show, it gave me extra motivation to finally get around to those I had never seen and rewatch son I hadn’t watched in 10 or 20 years. This motivation was especially important for my blind spots, namely silent films. I am the type of person whose friends and family assume has seen just about everything, but even the new season of modern classics is proving there are still plenty that I haven’t gotten around to.

If You Love Movies...
Paul and Amy have done a great job breaking down the AFI’s top 100 films of all time in Season 1 of Unspooled. Now in Season 2, they’re exploring a bunch of movies from a variety of genres to see if any should be considered for the top 100. The level of detail and depth they get into around some of the most beloved movies of all time is always fascinating. It’s made me seek out a ton of older movies I might not have seen otherwise and I’m grateful for that.

It’s good/ok.
I am obsessed with movies and love to hear people discussing them. The FB community is great! The problem is this- Paul is a solid critical thinker. He definitely knows how to take the conversion to a deeper level. Amy misses it somehow. She constantly blows off his insights and can’t seem to make those connections on a deeper analytical level. She can recite facts and tidbits about the productions but doesn’t add any psychological analysis about the meaning of the content in relation to art, the artist, and the world. I think Paul would be matched with a better, more self aware, and insightful host.

Wish I Could Give More Stars
The discussing of whatever movie they are doing is five star work. Going through the list I’ve found movies that I like that I never would have seen before. And I’ve found movies that I love but have learned to appreciate even more. I enjoy the show a lot. However, their constant need to be “woke” and their constant liberal dissertation is just too much. They make way too many Trump jokes and they are always asking about the political correctness of a subject. If they would be a little more impartial or totally omit their politics and their need to be “woke” this podcast would be a five star one-no doubt. I go with three stars just because of all the stuff they ram into their movie discussion.

The Good, The Bad, and The Unspooled
I really loved this podcast in the early days. As it went on it lost some of its wonder and honesty. The hosts are great and often have differing opinions. But by the end it just kind of fizzled, which was really sad. The King Kong episode and The African Queen are gems. The second season I gave a listen to and sadly, I wasn’t thrilled. The black panther discussion was a yuck for me
I dipped my toe in by listening to the 2018 blockbusters podcast. The Black Panther part and was pretty disappointing. It’s one thing to not like a movie or a genre of movies but to confuse U not liking it with some sort of mass delusion is not it. one of the hosts suggests that BP killed at the box office because audiences want to root for diversity. And that in 4 years we’ll all look back and say it wasn’t that good. Speak for yourself. Black people are not that starved for entertainment that we have to pretend to like things. It was actually a good movie, yeesh. Coogler has made 2 critically acclaimed populist movies in a row and that wasn’t because he took advantage of white guilt etc etc... really annoyed me hearing their discussion dismiss the work because the cgi was bad at the end.

Seriously? That’s it?
For almost two years we have listened to a podcast that claimed to re-evaluate the afi top 100, and after all of that we got a finale show that covered a few movies and served to make room for the next season of the show. Where is a final discussion of the top 100? The two of you didn’t even use the same system to review the final movies. Paul didn’t even put his in order. Top 10 and bottom 10? On off maybe? I can’t believe you guys phoned in the culmination of two years of work and audience attention. This was the most disappointing final episode I could imagine. You’ve invented season two. Cool. But why didn’t you give the first hundred and respect and due diligence they deserved. You’ve given up on the listener to make this podcast about you, don’t be surprised when we give up too.

Most criticisms of this podcast are very banal
A few reviews in here disparage this show because Amy views watching films from a personal lens. They also act as if the two hosts are overly woke and disparage anything problematic. I strongly disagree with both of these points: Amy’s personal experience with films is exactly what criticism is, and she acknowledges when a film has baggage for her that is mostly unrelated to the film. More than that, her criticisms are often interesting and detailed, well-explained and thought-provoking. It’s so upsetting to me to see that people dismiss this when it’s their favorite film being talked about (most reviews mention Goodfellas). You can still love that film, and any of these other ones; she brings a unique perspective to it that I appreciate. The “overly woke” criticism is just absurd to me as well. We are talking about some films that were made nearly a century ago. They age. Some age better than others. We are allowed to talk about what hasn’t aged nearly as well, and they do so because that should be part of the discussion. If they were being overly woke, they would dismiss Roman Polanski and Charlie Chaplin films immediately, but they go quite in-depth towards what has made these films beloved. I love what they’re doing, and I can’t wait for more.

Tried to enjoy it but Amy ruins it
Amy’s political diatribes each episode have worn me down and I’ve unsubscribed. There are some gems of insight in each episode but it is drowned out by the neoliberal lenses that Amy analyzes each movie with - it’s okay to acknowledge these things but it shouldn’t be the basis of your critique.

I guess this woman has figured out the secret to perfect morality and can righteously judge everyone in the world according to her standards. Maybe we should elect her to be the next Pope? Amateur Hour
This is clearly discussed and maybe scripted before recording and then they try so hard to make it sound like they’re having a normal conversation. Would be better to just have bullet points and allow the discussion to flow, but everything is mapped out and they have to feign surprise that the other person brought something up. I know a lot of NPR podcasts do it this way but you don't hear it being so stiff.

Not Good Enough to Overlook Annoying Moments
I like the concept of this show better than the execution. Pick and choose the episodes you listen to, I guess. Some are fun and engaging, even in spite of Amy’s weird personality/annoying tendencies, and Paul’s lack of willingness to go deep on interesting things she brings up. Sometimes her level of insight and his level of charm are able to outshine these flaws. Usually (and especially in the Goodfellas episode) they are not. Stopped following because the hosts’ annoying tendencies just grated on my nerves too much.

Insight and fun
Love this podcast. The hosts make me rethink these movies, most of which I’ve seen, from a new perspective. The only disappointing part is the AFI list has no female directed movies and only one movie (?) from a black director. So the list is a mostly complied of films about the Boomer/Gen X heterosexual white American male experience. I’m a Gen X and was surprised how limited the scope of films is. But I’m listening to the entire podcast primarily for the insights of the hosts. I hope they do another pod with the films that they love.

I can appreciate an actor and a journalist coming together for this podcast. Some episodes I really like “To Kill a Mockingbird’ and some made me a bit annoyed “Philadelphia Story” ( on and on and on about Jimmy Stewart’s “manhood “) yes I’m older, in my 50s but I can’t stand when Amy reviews things with the lens of the 21st century - the films are on the list partly because they are a snapshot in time - I say pick and chose the episodes - some I just skip

AMY BROKE ME
I’ve been a fan and regular listener to this pod since episode one, but the last few months have just worn me down. Maybe Amy should have a separate podcast where she exclusively nitpicks pointless minutiae and complains about ex-boyfriends ruining films and pop culture for her. Then Unspooled can get back to being a podcast about the AFI 100 list? Taking a break, I just can’t anymore.

Holy mansplaining wow
I tried listening for the first time and started with Bladerunner because it’s one of my favorite movies. I started getting annoyed quickly because it seemed like Paul was more concerned with being “right” in his points and argument than having a nuanced discussion with differing viewpoints about a rather polarizing film. Paul would speak, then Amy would offer her opinion on the same point, but Paul was unable to do the same with Amy. When she would speak, he had to counter, and frequently interrupt, her. She was explaining why she preferred one director’s style over Scott’s and Paul disagreed but could not let it go then derailed the episode because he had to be right. Then when Amy said she thought Deckard was a human and said why, he interrupted her AGAIN and said, “but see that proves me right!” It’s not about being right, this is a podcast with the intention to discuss movies. Amy understands this well; Paul does not.

So woke
If you feel guilty about liking old movies, but can’t articulate why, this is the show for you. Every week, Paul and Amy spend the bulk of the show explaining how a so-called “Classic” movie is actually problematic. Often, that’s just because the director isn’t as “representative” as one of the great diverse directors of the 1920s-80s, but that’s a good enough reason to dump on the movie!! The longer the series goes, the dumber the conversation goes. Movies need to be added to the AFI list for their politics, not their artistic merit or cultural impact. Trigger warning: Sometimes the hosts actually like the movie they discuss. Beware.

How Did This Get Made?
That’s the name of the other podcast everyone keeps referencing. Seeing as how they struggle to type the whole thing out I figured I’d let you know. I’ve listened to a lot of episodes and here is my main criticism. I know we can’t abandon our experiences, but in a critical context it’s frustrating when a film critic brings all their baggage into a movie. I guess it boils down to “what are we talking about” when it comes to the film. Are we analyzing the filmmaking? What the context is? Our relationship to it? It’s a tricky line to tow and I’m not gonna act like there’s any way for film critics to always have a perfect analysis. I don’t want this to be bashing Amy, because I think a lot of detractors are bothered that she doesn’t like their favorite movies. However, there’s a reality to the criticism that she comes into a movie with her slant already with a predisposition to dislike films that are male oriented, politically incorrect, or ones that she has had bad experiences with in the past. And I’m not gonna act like there isn’t something totally valid in that: I’m a guy and I find it a little hard to really access what people like about Steel Magnolias, and I don’t care how good it is, my only memories of Ben Hur are being forced to watch it in class with my teacher running a commentary through it the whole time. But here’s the thing: if I’m asked to give my critical analysis on the films, I’m going to single out the performances, the filmmaking, and the flow of story. Not focus on my lived experiences with it. Paul is far from perfect, I mean sometimes I feel like he wants every film to be either a comedy or an action film. He’s probably one of those people who swears T2 is the most masterful film he’s ever seen. However, even with films he dislikes (Forrest Gump is a good example) he still approaches it from a perspective of “how is this movie as a piece of filmmaking and cinema history” and I just don’t think Amy cares if the movie is not a reinforcement of her worldview.

Struggling to still enjoy...
I’ve been tuned in since Ep 1, and I’ve had mixed feelings along the way. Even stopped listening for months because I was losing tolerance. I didn’t want to sound misogynistic & pile on Amy as it seems many male reviewers have. It wasn’t until this Bladerunner chat that the subtext clicked for me: Paul comes at most of these movies anew, or renewed, or with nostalgic enthusiasm and seems to have an open experience. But Amy seems to always approach the films with prejudice, agenda, and disdain. And when she described “all my ex-boyfriends” making her watch Bladerunner (“it’s my favorite movie”) it all clicked. Yes, she’s woke & wants us all to know. Yes, she’s feminist (and I try to be also). And yes, she brings an underlying amount of baggage to each movie - like there’s an axe to grind & she finally has her forum. That, mixed with things like constantly praising the god-awful dreck that is “Titanic” & similar, makes it difficult to listen. I only choose episodes for movies I’ve already seen - not for plot spoilers, but to avoid slant spoilers - and those get harder & harder to sit thru. Still a fan, but waning... Def Team Paul.

Was expecting more
I am working my way through the episodes, but I find myself frustrated with Amy in every one. As a film critic, I’m expecting some knowledge from her. To admit that she’d never seen ANY Fred and Ginger movie made me doubt whether she would have any insight to add on the older movies. And then she went on to bash it for being too “static”. I was hoping for some real tidbits about the casting and making of these movies, and instead I just get Amy talking about things that are “problematic”.

Love This Show
Honestly, the 2007 version of the AFI list changed my life, so this podcast almost feels like I'm completing the loop. I remember watching the TV special where they revealed the 2007 list and being so invested that I started making my way through the entire list, scheduling my life (I was in college at the time) around when these movies would be on TCM, AMC and the like, as well as when I could get them at Blockbuster. I will listen to Paul talk about anything because he can always find the uniqueness. I do think a show like this needs somebody like Amy for it to work. And I think they genuinely enjoy and appreciate each other, which makes me enjoy their approach to these movies even more.

Unspooled is one of my favorite podcasts, and also the podcast I've gotten the most out of. As a lover of films of the last two decades, I was shamefully lacking in film history. Idea for re-booting the show
They should re-record all the episodes, but replacing the current cohost Amy with June from HDTGM. That would be an awesome podcast. The current version is terrible, don’t even bother with it

Brilliant concept....Amy drove me nuts
Paul is fantastic a creative who appreciates the art. Amy is the critic who can find the rainstorm on a sunny day and is too hot “takey” for me. Not everything needs to be social justice’d. Sometime we just like movies and these are good ones. When you can’t like Shawshank and The Godfather, Goodfellas...maybe the movies aren’t the issue....I’ll listen to HDTGM

This podcast is the best ever! So much interesting info. Fun to listen too. Love the hosts. Film Noir and old black and white movies are my favorite. I must admit, they can be a little confusing. One of my favorites
Paul Scheer (How Did This Get Made?) and Amy Nicholson (The Canon) combined forces to tackle the 2007 AFI film list. Insightful analysis and fun discussions about these films and the times they were released.

I love movies and have really enjoyed the podcast. I started listening near the beginning but one could definitely catch up and enjoy the early episodes. The hosts definitely have an expansive movie knowledge but don’t get too far in the weeds and certainly enjoy a crowd pleaser as much as more serious works.

Amy and Paul have it all
When I was younger I saw the AFI 1997 list in my video store and would occasionally maybe see a film from it. However, I didn’t fully appreciate it, and when I found this podcast I decided it would be a chance to really work myself to fill in the gaps of my pop culture knowledge Paul and Amy are delightful, funny, and provide terrific insight into film, and I love that Amy works to prevent film (and film fan culture) from fully devolving into a boys club. I may not always agree with their opinions on a film, but I also trust that I can like and discuss a film even if others don’t like it Give this podcast a listen. You won’t regret it.

Started from the Get-go
I’ve been listening to the podcast from day 1, and I have really enjoyed it. I think that Paul and Amy are a perfect pairing in many ways; Amy has seen many of these movies for her job, while Paul is a little less experienced with some of these other films. This podcast has also had an uncanny ability to make itself and the films on the list relevant, which is very funny.

One of my absolute favorite podcasts
I’ve been listening to Unspooled since the beginning of the podcast. I am a HDTGM fan, and also a movie buff, in general, so this was right up my alley. It’s awesome to revisit old movies, watch ones I never thought I would, and just get some deep conversation and behind the scenes stories about the movies. Amy and Paul have a great rapport! I also love the community that has spawned around it - from the FB group to live viewings of Amy and Paul talking about movies that aren’t on the list on YouTube. It’s really become like family to me and I love being a part of a global gathering of movie fans who are funny, witty and astute, just like the hosts.

Such a fun project
The whole idea of the pod is great. It really motivated me to take a tour back through classic cinema some of which I hadn’t seen and a lot of which I saw when I was young and didn’t really appreciate. For that alone this deserves five stars. Amy and Paul are sort of like personal trainers keeping you motivated to keep going with an episode each week. I personally spread it out and take breaks because it can be exhausting to keep pace but that’s the great thing about this format. This content will always be here for people thanks to them. Kudos

This podcast changed my life
Not to be bombastic, but it truly did. I was in a new city, lonely, with only my many podcast hosts as friends. I’ve always loved movies, and was already a fan of Paul scheers, so I gave it a try. Now each week as I watch the next movie, I get so excited to hear if they agree with me and with each other. Although they disagree sometimes, it’s all respectful and in good fun. Amy’s years of experience and her good heartedness and Paul’s exuberance and love of film, make them a delightful duo I’ve developed real life friendships with fellow spoolers that will last long after we’ve completed the AFI list. I’ll follow Paul and Amy wherever they lead.

Great Journey Through AFI 100
It’s been a bucket list of mine to get through this list, and I have just 10 left, but by now have forgotten some that I watched long ago. I am so thankful that this podcast exists and is so well-executed. I love the guests - the director of Jackass for the episode on The General? The hosts are entertaining and bring great insight to the film reviews, and I love the bits about having callers guess plots or otherwise weigh in, and the reviews at the end bring some fascinating context. Thank you for this podcast!

This is my favorite podcast of all time, and I listen to quite a few since I work from home. It’s a little bit of a thrill to see it show up in my feed every week. Paul and Amy have fun, thoughtful, accessible discussions on each film on the list. I do have some concerns about what happens when we finish the initial 100. One idea: Start a new thread about the movies that used to be on the list, or the movies that should be on the list. I definitely don’t want it to end. I mean, how many True Crime podcasts can a person hear in one lifetime???!!! 😃

One of the best podcasts, anywhere
Unspooled is the perfect podcast. An insider, Paul Scheer, who acts and directs, and an outsider, Amy Nicholson, a professional film critic, watch and discuss some of the greatest movies ever made and share their reactions, usually bringing in a fascinating guest who had something to do with the production. The hosts are funny and insightful and the format gives listeners an education not only into the history of filmmaking, but also what America was going through at the time they were made. What more could you want in a podcast? Two enthusiastic thumbs up for Unspooled.

Love this podcast
I’ve been reading a few reviews lately that don’t seem to like how the hosts are giving theirs criticism of “classic” movies and honestly? That’s literally the point of the podcast. It’s to examine if these movies actually should be on the AFI list, if they hold up and if they actually should be considered classics. Some movies hold up well, others really don’t and if I see one more review complaining about their politics I might scream. They are reviewing these movie through a contemporary lens and often times that means dealing with harsh realities. Yes movies are political, sorry to break that to some people but that’s what art is. The complaints about Amy are honestly super sexist but I have a feeling since she’s been a critic for so long she’s used to that toxic part of the job. Also those reviewer using word like “woke” and phrases like “can’t we just enjoy movies for what they are” are pretty much showing their colors.

Love HDTGM and decided to listen to this after hearing the E.T. Episode. Amy just gets worse the longer you listen. I just couldn’t do it anymore. I was trying to hold out for Jaws, but I just can’t stand hearing her politics put into everything anymore. It’s not a podcast about classic movies, it’s a podcast about how Amy is offended by classic movies.

Unlike the garbage humans who commented and reviewed before me, I enjoy the personal touch Paul and Amy put into the podcast. If you’re not WOKE you’re not WELCOME .. stop calling your political opponents Garbage People
Stop the personal politics and the name calling. Just because I’m not woke doesn’t make me a “Garbage Person” I wanted to comment on the movie aspect of this podcast but when they bring their brand of politics into the mix I have to comment on how that ruins the listener experience for those of us on the right who also like moves. Movies and sports and music should be something we can all enjoy together. It should help to bring down the divide. But it seems every episode I listen to she has to make anti-Trump put downs. And he uses derogatory terms about people he doesn’t like such as calling us Garbage People or Fascists. They have the right to their opinions. But when you bring it into the show it is now part of the show and can be included in the entire listener experience. So now I’m commenting on the unspooled movie/ politics podcast. You make us “garbage people” feel unwelcome I even joined the Facebook group and one of the rules was civility. No name calling. I suggest they apply that to themselves. Can’t we just talk about movies?

I thought it would be better
I’ve listened to a few podcasts and I feel you do a poor job of holding some of the more classic movies to the same standards of today. Especially when it comes to gender, sexual orientation and POC. You could say things like “using that word would not be acceptable today” or “how he treated that lady would not be acceptable today”, would be ok. However, you skewer movies that so many people love because you feel it’s not represented by today’s standards. I just don’t care for your take on some of these movies.

Amy Nicholson is a terrible person
She is the definition of white neoliberal oppressor who pretends to be woke while utterly spitting in the face of a women-led, racially intersectional working grassroots movement. She makes rich white feminism into an art form. She’s horribly uninformed and smug. She’s not your friend.

Film Novice and Expert Duo it is not
So I expected Paul Scheer would be the lesser insightful host, but he actually does his homework and brings a fresh eye to some classics. I was flabbergasted his cohost had never seen the movie for their second episode. Her opinions add nothing to the podcast. The best parts is when they get outside commentaries to provide insight to the topic at hand.

Great listen
Paul is great and unexpectedly knowledgeable about film. Amy is smart and has great insights and brings a wonderful perspective. I sometimes get tired of the predictable role that politics plays in the reviews of films, especially from Amy. If the movie has a female lead she will always praise the movie, the performance etc... She needs to stop using the phrase , “this dark/dystopian/ or whatever message in this movie is more important now than ever” Everything in you life should not be interpreted through the lens of how much you hate Republicans. However, it is entertaining and informative enough that I can get past that (most of the time)

What’s with the Amy hate?
Surprised (kind of) to see so many reviewers complaining about Amy. I feel like they just may not have ever met women who have always been deeply interested in film and are jarred by her lack of fangirling. I think she brings a really unique perspective to things that balance off of Paul, and as a team they always can respect each other’s differences in opinion and discuss it in a way that isn’t about personal bias, but about their experiences and study of film. I will say however that the only thing I am getting tired of with Amy is the use of the same anecdote with the crappy Hollywood apartment with the rats and the milkshake and the steakhouse and the wedge salad and martini and Karina Longworth— girl, we know!!!!! Surely you have more sponsored stories to hawk the dining card!

I’ve tried on multiple occasions to stay interested
I’ve tried multiple times to listen to this podcast. I love the idea, but as many people in the comments have noted, Amy makes it a difficult listen. Her perspective is so negative and singleminded it makes it a chore to listen to an entire episode. Films are supposed to bring entertainment, reflection, and innovation. Sometimes films miss the mark and/or don’t live up to expectations. That doesn’t mean the film should be dismissed entirely. Amy dismisses other opinions so quickly it makes you feel like she has never really formed her own opinion to begin with. You can tell she has god knowledge of film history, it’s just a shame she doesn’t present her views in an engaging and thoughtful way most of the time. I don’t want this to come off as superficial criticism of the show. I’ll get the impression that both Amy and Paul put in a ton of work to prep for the shows, and it shows from their detailed knowledge Bout the films they discuss. Is just Amy’s negative presentation of her ideas that take away from an enjoyable discussion about film history. I do not want to suggest that people should not listen to this podcast, b/c others might not have the same feeling. I just hope that the hosts review their reviews and take into consideration many of the reviews that express this same general idea. I will continue to try to listen to new episodes with hope that the tone of the discussions gets better.

I always come back
I really enjoy their musings on these classic films. But I really, really tire of the predictable woke takes. It's become easy to predict when Amy will launch into a side political comment. We get it, Amy... You're progressive! Just say that up front, and we'll be able to fill in all the blanks, and it gives no insight into the films. And that's a shame, because Amy has a ton of actual insightful comments, as does Paul. And they do a lot of background research, greatly increasing my appreciation of the films. I disagree with many of their assessments. I understand how having so many [ boxing/ mob /Scorsese /hoffman] movies can perplex, but at some point you have to consider artistry separately from actor, director, or theme. And they appreciate artistry during their recap, then in the overall rating seem utterly unimpressed by craft. Butt always entertaining, and usually informative.

Good popcorn podcast
I have enjoyed these very much and have found myself being challenged to watch and rewatch these movies. It’s the only opportunity most people get to engage in discussions about American cinema. Paul is funny and brings a “down to Earth” vibe to his views of the movies. I like that Amy is not afraid to challenge conventional wisdom about the place these movies have in American culture. I do sometimes wish she shared more nuance to her reviews and not just attack these pieces just because she doesn’t like someone or something.

I agree with the other reviewers
I love Paul and I listen to HDTGM often. Amy needs to stop reviewing any movie that came out prior to 1998. Things were different. We are aware. We can’t wave a wand and make them all wholly politically correct nor would I want to because last I understood it, movies, books and art weren’t to be held under those kind of lenses. Overall entertaining but sometimes it irritates the crap out of me (quite frankly) and I have to skip over large sections of it. They don’t allow for “half stars” or I’d give it 3.5 ⭐️

Fun
Firstly, these are reviewers the age of my kids. Their naïveté is startling at times and irritating at others. Amy talks faster than any East Coast native and begins many statements with, “Yeah, I mean...” But she also treats so gently the interview with Cary Grant’s daughter that I was almost in tears myself. When they get excited, they throw malapropisms around like Yogi Berra but that’s just funny. Altogether grand fun.

This show is great. Paul and Amy are both smart, funny, and knowledgeable and their chemistry is awesome. I was surprised to see so many reviews hating on Amy but shocker, women can’t ever catch a break especially if they dare to have opinions. Love the premise of going back over the classics and the excuse it gives me to rewatch all these greats. I am dreading the end of the show and I hope they find a way to keep it going - maybe they each pick 10 movies they think should be added to the list and do an episode on each of them? 20 more weeks of awesome content!

It’s ok but not great
I have given this show several listens (8 episodes) and have concluded that for me it is just ok. Trying to determine if a film made 20,30 or 40 years ago through a 2018-2019 lens is probably not going to work out well for the movie. I don’t think Paul and Amy really look at films for what they are or the era in which they were made. Both are good hosts but not very fair as critics. I don’t think it’s a bad show but I don’t feel it’s good either. It’s right in the middle making it utterly forgettable. At least to me. Others have reviewed this much more harsh and yet others have lauded much praise; I didn’t connect with it in either way which to me is much worse.

Paul is good, Amy is not.
When I found Unspooled, I was thrilled to finally find a movie podcast with a female host. I was getting sick of only listening to guys talk about movies. Unfortunately, Amy brings too many politics into the show. Her annoying progressive views get in the way of being a good critic and she dislikes movies simply because their actors hold political views that she doesn’t like. This is a podcast about movies, not a place to express your intolerance of Trump and Republicans. She also lacks some simple, fundamental appreciation for true quality in movies and downplays classic films that are fantastic while praising newer crap simply because new movies are full of woke culture. Paul on the other hand is a good host and keeps politics out of the show. I am so bummed that Amy is a leftist.

Amy Nicholson is a “film critic” who knows nothing about films and film history
I often heard Paul talk about this podcast on How Did This Get Made and finally decided to give it a try. I’m sorry I did. I expected to find a podcast about a comedian-turned film enthusiast being guided through the AFI’s 100 Best Films by a knowledgable film critic who understands the process of filmmaking and the history of these great movies. What I found instead is a comedian-turned film enthusiast who knows more about these movies than the supposed film critic, Amy Nicholson, whose ignorance is staggering. I should have known something was wrong when in episode 2, “Ben-Hur,” she actually admitted she had never seen this seminal film. How can you be a film critic and not have seen Ben-Hur, one of the greatest films ever made? That’s right, Amy Nicholson isn’t a film critic in the classic sense; trained and schooled. She’s like all of the new media “film critics,” aka ignorant bloggers who fell bass backwards into blogging their inane thoughts about movies through a lens of neo progressive ideology and identity politics. I then listened to the episode about Unforgiven, a classic Western, rich with heavy themes revolving around revenge, forgiveness, honor, and loyalty, and all Amy Nicholson could do was talk about how much she didn’t like Clint Eastwood (because she doesn’t like his politics… like that has ANYTHING to do with the movies he makes), and then said the film shouldn’t be on the AFI’s 100 Best Films list, again, not because she made an intelligent argument as to why the film is lacking, but because she doesn’t like Clint Eastwood’s politics. Save your time. If you’re a passionate film fan who is tired of terrible bloggers with ignorant opinions posing as film critics that inject their inanely shallow political bias into everything they write as opposed to offering actual criticism about films involving writing, acting, directing, scoring, or anything about filmmaking, then you should avoid this tedious podcast. What a shame. Had Paul paired himself with an film critic with a passion for filmmaking and knowledge of film history, someone like Drew McWeeny, this could have been so much better. It should have been better.

Unlistenable thanks to Paul’s cohost. Truly difficult to believe that some people only view the world as oppressor vs oppressed. This could have been good if they simply talked about if the films were good or not.

Great idea. Paul is great and lots of energy. Amy I think has changed. Less interested and mostly negative. They’d generally like to take their anti 70s films and simply replace them with their formative films from their youth. Still live the Early show.

Liked it until it became the "I hate New Hollywood" podcast.
It was interesting until it just became a slog of them not liking or connecting with 70's cinema and the "New Hollywood" era of directors. The "Gone With The Wind" episode and "On the Waterfront" are so engaging and full of fun information but man is it getting old just hearing them dump on Scorsese and Spielberg.

Amy is eager to share a “woke” take. If the film does not fit cleanly into a 2019 narrative then it will inevitably be described as misogynistic or uninspired. Many of the films, film-makers and actors are from a different era. It feels arrogant to judge the cast and crew through modern standards. Her focus is less on the material and more on political correctness. It makes the conversations about the films odd and disjointed. This podcast should be fun. Paul is funny and pleasant. Amy is simply bad at this.

Over It
Some really good episodes, even for films I have not seen. Been lukewarm about it for a while, and after the lame conversation regarding Joker/Taxi Driver, I’m good for now. I understand playing two potential sides of an argument, but it really felt like the majority of criticisms (against the only recent release they’ve discussed) that could be leveled were a result of really lazy viewing and an unwillingness to meet the creators at their own goals with the film, which was disappointing and uncharacteristic.

Love It
Unspooled is the best! I am looking forward to watching all the films and hearing all 100 podcasts. Great concept. Great guides. Great podcast. Thank you both! “I do a lot of cocaine.” -Amy during the NbNW episode Update: I watched all 100 films on the list!

Important and Deeply Entertaining
This is the best way I have learned about film. Two film experts, humorous and intelligent, discuss the American Film Institute top 100 films. Film by film. Take your time. Watch the films. Listen to their history tidbits and discussion of the film. And, best yet, you get to disagree or agree. Some compelling shticks like (is there a Simpsons gag about the film in discussion) or should the film be on AFI’s list and where should it fall? If you love film, this is a must-listen that you’ll not regret spending time with. Enjoy.

Meh
As time has gone on the show has become less and less interesting. Not much research about each weeks film is done, especially those they don’t like, outside of what can be found on Wikipedia. Also it’s tiring that everything comes back to a comparison to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Reviewers admit they haven’t seen most of classics
Frustrating to listen to so-called critics who routinely admit they haven’t seen a lot of the top 100 films. This is a big tell they also haven’t watched a lot of other films from prior eras as well, which reflects they lack a depth of knowledge of our country’s rich film history. Biased toward movies they saw while growing up. And routinely dismissing films from glory days of Hollywood. Should be call millennials whining. The female host seems to hate with some bizarre feminist bent any movies involving men. I tried with this podcast. I really tried. Listened to a number of them. Do not recommend. They should instead stop their podcast and dedicate the next ten years of their lives studying films of our country’s history so they can offer informed opinions more than ... insert valley girl voice ... this movie is toooo looooong. CAN WE PLEASE HAVE MIKE CHADWAY AKA GERARD BUTLER FROM THE UGLY TRUTH JUMP IN AND EXPLAIN WHY MOVIES WITH MALE LEADS ARE VERY BELOVED!? STOP WITH THE MAN HATING PLEASE!

Skip it
I’ve never heard such a meandering, useless podcast (that isn’t supposed to be) in my life. The two hosts of the show make no effort to look at the films through a critical lens. It’s all reactionary triflings about how the film stands up under selective scrutiny in today’s world. I would have enjoyed this podcast if either of the hosts knew anything about the technical side of making a film, but it is more like an objective look at whether the movie can offend anybody today. I don’t know. I just think it would benefit from having people that knew why these movies are important in the first place, other than getting their selective knowledge of the film from Wikipedia and then diving in head first. Professionalism would help this show a ton.

The Stanley Kubrick of Podcasts
Amy Nicholson and Paul Scheer have crafted a podcast that is deserving of the great movies they discuss. A perfect blend of insight and humor without pretension. If (when) the future gives us an American Podcast Institute, Unspooled will reign supreme.

The vocal fry
is really rough and distracting. Karina Longworth presumably listened to the complaints and changed so perhaps there’s hope. It’s different from the usual 80s “valley” speak, although Amy does say “like” way too often. This and the ridiculous hyperbole she trots out, a lot (this movie would be a thousand times a million gazillion percent better if fill-in-the-blank) are the hardest to take. Paul is Paul, so few issues, there.

Nice podcast of two young film lovers viewing classics and giving their opinions. If Amy could just pronounce BIO-PIC (bio, NOT biah!!!) it would be flawless.

Amy kills it
She’s gotta be the best, coolest, smartest movie critic outthere. Hands down. And that voice! Please! I’m just a fan. But having said that (cliche, cliche) Amy and her cohost really bring on the art of loving and talking about films. A bit too long tho, but excellent nonetheless. So, pick a film on the list, grab a beer, sit back, listen and enjoy. This is the best podcast on classic film reviewing in podcastlandia (not withstanding KPCC’s Filmweek, where Amy also shines). If u love classic movies, make sure to listen and subscribe. Amy will do the rest. LB

Good concept, Amy needs improvement
Amy comes across as self-indulgent and a show-off because many things she says are actually about her first and the movie second. ("I was just in Cairo and blah blah blah" "I grew up in Texas so blah blah blah" "please follow my quirky stream of consciousness but blah blah blah" "maybe my brain works in crazy ways because of all of the director I've met but blah blah blah" - always followed by interesting facts or analysis not related to the unnecessary, self-referencing preamble). Paul does a better job using a unique style and personality to present the material in an entertaining way while not putting himself in the foreground. Maybe this is what Amy is trying for. Here is an example from the Sophie's Choice episode about the Riesling diet: "It's an old diet I've always wanted to try. But I've never had the courage. You [describes diet - this is the interesting part]. I came across it in old diet books because I think those are really funny. I've always kinda wanted to try it." (Quotes not exact but capture the sense) Amy, we don't need all these facts about yourself. A sprinkling would be charming, but instead we get a torrential outpouring of autobiographical facts. It's distracting.

Great Concept, Muddled Execution
On paper, I would love this podcast. I love lists and I love movies. Paul is funny but seems put on. Amy is overly judgmental. I am a pretty liberal person but holy crap. Getting onto Shawshank for not having any female parts. It is about an all male prison! Feels like Amy is after hot takes so much that it ruins her cinema experience.
