Unexplained is a haunting and unsettling bi-weekly podcast about strange and mysterious real life events that continue to evade explanation. A story-based show mixing spoken-word narrative, history and ideas - often to terrifying effect - that explores the space between what we think of as real and what is not; where sometimes belief can be as concrete as ‘reality,’ whatever that is…

What is happening
I have been listening to this podcast since the beginning. The last year or 2 of episodes have not been great. The latest 3 episode series on the winged creature from Ohio got me excited, until episode 3. Almost the full episode was a rant about gender, climate change, not eating animals etc. Dude I come to unexplained for stories about winged creatures, not to listen to you saying the world is going to end because we eat meat and grow crops. Please tell me the monster stories and leave your opinions on politics for a different podcast. Thanks!

Mind Bending Twist (Spoiler Alert)
I have listened to Richard McClain-Smith’s Unexplained and for 5 years so clearly I’m a fan.
That said, with the latest episode, Episode 27, the last of a three-part series on the Mothman episodes in 1960s Point Pleasant, WVA, RM-S sets a very high bar for his show and others in the genre.
In the conclusion, McLain-Smith takes listeners through a gentle left hand away from exploring an urban legend into a philosophical treatise on the nature of perception, awareness and empathy.
In a few minutes of straightforward language, he explores the possibility that other species may well be capable of experiencing human (or non-human but no less real) emotion and cognition.
In the process he led me, without being a scold about it, to question everything about my daily reality including my dietary choices.
By delivering such a fresh and compelling twist on an event about which the general details are well known to followers of cryptid and UFO lore, McClain-Smith shows he’s a master of his craft.

Old Episodes are Fantastic, New Ones….Ehhh
It pains me to write this because I would get so absorbed into the older episodes. The narration of the new ones are just not something I can stand to listen to. I’m not sure what caused the change in the reading style, but it’s a really shame.

Still good, but has gotten PC
Well produced, well researched, and interesting. Really much better than I expected, every bit as good as Lore. Edit: all of the above still stands, but if it gets any more politically correct, I may have to bail. Edit: bailing out. Enjoy if you can.

What has happened to the narrator’s voice?
This used to be one of my favorite podcasts , but the cadence of the narrators voice has changed to the point that I literally cannot tolerate listening anymore. It’s like chalk on a blackboard. Really disappointing. I hope he reads these comments and just goes back to telling good stories without this weird vocal delivery.

Content and Writing are Good; Narration is Monitonous
Every sentence is spoken at the same cadence, ending with an upward inflection on the last word—also happens before commas/pauses within sentences. I think the host is a good writer and finds great stories. And he has a lovely voice. But eventually I couldn’t look past the cadence and stopped listening. After looking at other reviews I see I’m not the only one. It’s a relatively easy fix; hope the feedback is taken to heart. I would love to change to 5 stars.

Intolerable narration
Great concept but I couldn’t make it through a single episode. The intro and ads are the only normally-inflected speech you’ll find in this podcast.
An absolutely head-scratching bad narration choice.

Great stories and research but horrid inflection
I would absolutely listen to this podcast nonstop if the narrator could speak in more than ascending and descending minor thirds and accent on the third beat of the rhythm of his speech. I can’t describe what it does to my brain. I know he can do differently from the commercials, but the way he reads makes my brain want to melt out of my ears. Please vary the prosody in your voice. The accent is lovely but my goodness.

And it makes it hard to get through each episode lol.

Love the content, weird cadence
I started listening just a few weeks ago. I tolerated the cadence because the content was good. I recently visited some of his older stuff and discovered he use to speak normally! So much better! Why the transformation to the weird, “this is the most boring job I’ve ever had in my life” up and down cadence? Please go back to normal speaking.

The podcast has gone from unexplained to unsolved crimes, and the narrator sounds like a dying man reciting his last will. It used to be good, 3-stars for the old times.

RMS is trying to hypnotize us
I kinda like that ASMR influenced upspeak and sing song quality, because it lulls me to sleep. But today I heard the way he pronounced Mesolithic and was jolted from my stupor. There is NO universe in which it has a long “i”, as is meso-lie-thick. I get the joke, McLean Smith. “ME SO LIE THICK”.
What’s his game? Hypnotize us and then subliminally whisper “buy crypto” into our vulnerable brains?

You to a great job m8. I can’t wait to hear your new stories every week. Not all are for me but most are fantastic, the background noise is perfect for listening before bed and atmosphere. I’m not huge on true crime so please find more mystery/cryptid/ufo/paranormal stories because no one can tell the story better than you!!😅

Prefer new episodes to old
There’s so much hate on here about RMS’s cadence but I actually prefer his new episodes and slower reading style to his older one. Makes the stories seem ominous, and I can usually follow them better. I listened back to an older episode and it was very rushed which distracted me. Maybe ya’ll need to chill out a bit? Or use the 1.5x speed button.

Extremely biased
So disappointing. This is why I am an independent. Almost every episode has political undertones, making republicans, cops, FBI, etc. sound terrible. Sure you can find stories that throw dirt on republicans, but you could do the same for democrats. Why is it even worth mentioning the political party of the people in the stories? It does not add to it at all.

Inflections make for a frustrating listen
Could you please just use slightly more normal inflections? This is such an amazing podcast but I literally can’t focus on what you are saying with the bizarre syntax and question? endings to every single sentence. please….It’s truly maddening.
I agree with the other reviews—I love this podcast, but the upward inflections at the end of every single sentence – with absolutely no dynamic variation that one only expects with this type of storytelling is pretty maddening. Interestingly, this is a new thing for the orator. I have been listening to this podcast from the oldest episodes to the newest, and in the first couple seasons, the narrator uses a perfectly normal tone and inflections. So, something must have happened – new producers asked him to change his tonal delivery? (or something) – because he started out as a perfectly normal and engaging storyteller.

This used to be one of my absolute favorites, but took a break for a while bc I wasn’t super into some of the stories a few seasons ago. Gave it a try today, and what has happened to the narration?? Such a strange cadence with zero energy. It’s unlistenable. I won’t be coming back.

Nice voice but unlistenable
Oh my god, I wanted so badly for this to be my new favorite because it has everything I love, but the problem of *cadence* of the host’s narrative makes it like nails on a chalkboard. This is not “hating,” it’s a simple fact: just before every pause, his voice goes up to the exact same tone at the end, in a manner of speaking that is usually reserved for when a person is trying to highlight a long list of tedious things - but in this case, it’s like the tedium never stops. I wanted to listen, I really did.

Great content but why did he change his voice ?
Why are you not listening to your audience?? Go listen to your older episodes and do THAT !!
Edit: I started from the beginning and the narrators voice is totally normal he doesn’t do the weird up turn at the end of each sentence . Lele543I agree 100% you described what I wanted to say exactly . Strange inflection almost like reading a list instead of telling a story . I really want to listen because it’s so good but I’m so distracted . I’ll keep trying .

Speech
I would thoroughly enjoy this podcast if Richard McClain Smith would learn how to add more tone into his speech. Every single sentence or approaching punctuation ends with the same tone. Every sentence is spoken as if it’s the ending sentence to a whole paragraph. It aggravates my brain so much I cannot finish a whole episode.

Can't handle the monotone narration
The content is so interesting but I can't listen to it. The narration is monotone with a rising inflection every few words- often in the middle of sentences and even phrases- without any of the natural speech patterns that help you follow the flow of the story. I keep trying to listen but have to switch it off in a few minutes bc it's too frustrating to listen to.
The first couple of seasons are great though- would be awesome if the narrator would go back to using a normal speech pattern! I'd love to be able to listen again!

One of the best
There are loads of unsolved mystery-type podcasts out there, and they all cover more-or-less the same topics, but Richard’s thoughtful, literary presentation lifts Unexplained above its peers. I really don’t understand the complaints about Richard’s voice; I find it very soothing and pleasant. Don’t listen to the haters, Richard McClean… …. …. Smith.

Monotone and unexciting storytelling
My partner and I took a swing at this podcast while on a road trip. We like podcasts like Lore, where excellent narration and storytelling are the heart of its magic. Richard MacLean Smith leaves a lot to be desired. The writing itself is decent, but his voice (while soothing) is very monotone and lacks the nuances of a decent narrator. No emotion or captivating qualities. It’s honestly hard to stay focused on the story and more like background noise. He definitely could benefit from narrator classes.

Used to love…
I used to be a huge fan of this podcast, then I noticed that I started to zone out and grow bored. I realized it was the droning voice of the host. He’s changed his speech pattern and tone. I went back to earlier episodes to compare, and around the end of season one, and the beginning of season 2, the show hit its stride. They got the score right, the stories, and the host had a soothing, confident voice. Now, he drones on slowly, with no intonation changes, is this foreboding, dull voice. YAWN…

Subject matter is awesome, but…
I think it’s time for me to take a break from this podcast.
I have been listening to this podcast for years, probably since day one, and lately I have noticed an almost doubling of ad interruptions. Whereas there may have been two in an episode, there have now been at least four, and the episode isn’t even over yet. I realize that content creators have to make money but the ads have become too much. Either put them at the beginning or at the end, but please stop interrupting the story with so many ad breaks.

Narration style has REALLY changed…not for the better
I’ve been listening to this podcast for the last 5 or so years, and have really enjoyed it. However I hadn’t listened to an episode in like the last year (he was doing a lot of alien abduction stuff and I wasn’t as interested), and today decided to check out the latest episodes about the Somerton man. WOW, his narration style has really changed. It’s always been slow, quiet and melodic, but these episodes were extremely extremely monotone, and every sentence ends with an upward lilt, like he’s asking a question, and it’s extremely difficult to listen to. Just to make sure I wasn’t imagining things, I listened to an old episode from 2017 and the difference was quite dramatic. I really like the content, but judging from the dictation style he sounds really tired/burnt out or something.

Spooky but measured
The British are known for their sometimes dry responses to things that would have Americans out of sorts. The stories are well told but without the fluff, and including the other, less paranormal considerations, for the listener to make up their own mind about what happened. Highly recommend for all interested in the unknown.

A better, British “Lore”
I recommend this show as a better, British version of Lore.
Richard MacLean Smith’s writing is some of the highest quality I’ve encountered in Podcasting. His descriptions are equal parts interesting, charming, and haunting. He chooses interesting topics and keeps them the focus of his show. And, his music creates just the right mysterious aesthetic.
“Unexplained” might be the highest quality paranormal podcast in a very crowded field.

Narration is Terrible
Don’t know what’s changed, but the narrator sounds as if he’s just utterly bored w/ the material he’s reading. Used to not be this way. Sadly, I can’t listen the sound it’s become.

I can see I’m not the only one who can’t stand the odd cadence of the narrator’s voice. Makes it impossible to focus when it sounds like the narrator is reading a grocery list

Why has your reading pattern changed???
So, I’ve been an avid listener of your podcast from the second episode. I literally got chills when you got the show on Amazon! Talk about growth and accomplishment ! I got all my friends on board. And then I started noticing new odd narrative pattern in the way you tell the stories now. Ending each sentence in a upward intonation tilt. I don’t get it!?!? Why? I’ve tried to stomach it, hoping it would change and you go back to how you started and it just gets worse! I haven’t listed to an entire episode in a while now. And all the people I put on to your podcast either dropped off or decided it sounded like you were auditioning for a poetry reeding. I’m not trying to be cruel or anything like that. I just don’t get it. No one talks like that ALL THE TIME! Could you please, please explain?

I love this!
I the stories are interesting and sometimes off beat. I find myself saying “oh?” a lot. I know this will sound weird but trust me it’s not, I often listen when I’m trying to go to sleep and my god his voice (sorry forgot your name) just helps you drift off. If it is a weekend I just relisten to the episodes. His research his terrific. I fact I live in an just outside the Green Mountains and never know about the mysterious disappearances. Got lots of friends to listen to that one. There was another disappearance 2 weeks ago of an English teacher who went hiking alone. Anyway everyone should enjoy.

Content is great
I thought maybe I was the only one - but I see I am not . The stories are really good - but the lilt and cadence of the narrator is so distracting I can’t focus on the story . I’ve heard him read an advert in a regular voice and if he would stick to that this would be 5 stars for me .

Great content but why did he change his voice ?
Edit: I started from the beginning and the narrators voice is totally normal he doesn’t do the weird up turn at the end of each sentence . Lele543I agree 100% you described what I wanted to say exactly . Strange inflection almost like reading a list instead of telling a story . I really want to listen because it’s so good but I’m so distracted . I’ll keep trying .

One downfall
This is an excellent podcast, and the narrator has a great potential voice for podcasting, but the “up beat” at the end of every sentence and every part of a sentence has become so distracting I can’t focus on any of the words. And not in a way that relaxes me before bed, but in a way that grates my nerves so that I lay wide awake wondering why he does this progressively more over the years, and if it’s a symptom of an underlying issue worsening (could be a symptom of mental or neurological health condition?), and then I worry about the host and have to switch podcasts. This could seriously be my favorite podcast… please consider what can be done to modify your inflections, because you have so much talent.

Why why whyyyyyy is he reading this way?!?
I’m currently listening to the Enfield Haunting and what the hell…. Why on earth does the narrator speak in this odd cadence?! It’s a weird monotonous… idk sing-speak with oddly placed fluctuations?!? I CANNOT be the only one frustrated by this… Come on now! This is an easy fix… please for the love of an overall interesting and well researched podcast… correct this!

Unfortunate
I used to love this podcast. Recently, I put a newer episode (season 6 episode 10) on whilst I was cooking and couldn’t listen to the end due to the upward lilt to every sentence; something about the reading no longer seems natural or has closure with a downward lilt. Very, very unfortunate. The way the narrator used to read was top-notch, and the content quality still seems to be there, but I cannot get past the way in which it’s narrated. What happened? I am so sad for this change.

First time
This is my first time listening and the storylines are great very interesting but the big and main downfall is the guy that’s talking. They got a plus using someone with the accent but the way he is talking you can tell he is straight reading from something which was fine but his tone sounds so repetitive and boring I couldn’t listen anymore. He sounded more interested in the commercials instead of his story. Change the way the guy reads and this would be a 5star podcast

Better before the voice changes
The narrator’s sing songy voice has become too distracting. If you listen to older shows, it was always there, but not as overwhelming as it is now. It is almost as tho he focusing on the sound and cadence of his voice to the point of distraction - for both himself and the listener.
This was a 4/4.5 show before, but now it is generous at 3 stars. The writing is good. Pretty much everything is GOOD, minus the sing song up and down bop boop talk thing he has going on. I hope the narrator can try for a more conversational style of speaking again, so I can enjoy his show once more. Until then I will have to pass..

Great content but host should check pronunciations.
I loved this podcast but I had to stop listening after the clear lack of an effort to pronounce names correctly. (The name Miguel Jose is not pronounced Meeg-well Josey for starters.) There is zero effort put into trying to learn how to properly pronounce names of people or prominent locations. This podcast would be phenomenal if the host could just bother to Google names of people and places for a simple pronunciation guide before recording.

a good show
informational and overall a good show, i put it on the same pedestal as lore and atwwd. i much prefer the paranormal episodes but the true crime ones are fairly respectful to those involved. considering how much the reviews were complaining about it, i was expecting Richard’s voice to be worse than it was in s6. honestly? i only noticed a slight difference, and i don’t mind it. there’s also the ads, which i think is a silly thing to complain about. it’s how he, and almost every other podcaster, makes money to keep doing this. if it really bothers you just skip it.

great show; some thoughts on the critical reviews around here
I’ve been listening since 2017, always eagerly awaiting the next episode. Richard, if you read this, you’re still writing good content. A lot of people are complaining here about “your voice”. It isn’t your voice that they are finding challenging; your cadence has changed since your earlier episodes. You used to have more of a conversational tone, where your cadence varied much more than it does. And your pitch has dropped (normal with age but I think it’s more related to vocal fry), and you have vocal fry going more than you once did. Honestly, the vocal fry makes it harder to engage as a listener. I suspect it’s because, like all of us, you’re likely feeling burnt out with the events we’re living through. So I guess, this is just a note to say: people are being mean needlessly; your delivery has changed a lot over the years, but in specific ways that maybe evidence hard times (or boredom with the format?). I hope that you take good care, and I look forward to future content. I do also hope that you tell more ghost stories; I thought the truly curious deaths episodes to be great too, though perhaps the German one was a little outside of the wheelhouse of what we might expect from your typical material (it seemed kind of like an exploitation of a really sad story, even if it’s mysterious). If I could change one thing about your show, it would be that you sometimes switch verb tenses from active to passive, and it is confusing. But otherwise, great job, keep it up, and do what feels right.

Lovely podcast-but PLEASE return to a normal delivery!!!!
I absolutely adored this podcast when I first stumbled upon it. I jumped around a bit but still had plenty of content awaiting me in seasons 1-5. Then one day I decided to see what the newest season held in store: little did I know I was in for quite a shock, and frankly a terrible disappointment.
Talk about unexplained! I don’t know what happened to RMC’s vocal delivery, but it has become so strangely monotonous and tedious that I find it ironically TOO distracting to even follow the story! I’m SO sad, as I’m running out of stories from previous seasons. Having experience vocal nodes myself, I thought maybe he was having to work around some issues, but this seems more deliberately forced. I did notice that even at the end of season 5, he starts to narrate with more limited inflection and monotonous rhythm, reminiscent of a sermon, but in Season 6, he really turns his delivery into a whole new animal. The experience almost reminds me of the minister who officiated the marriage in “The Princess Bride.”
As a result, I am finding it painful to listen, and am holding out hope that the narrator returns to his more vibrant, expressive, honest inflection of seasons past. I did enjoy them so.

So Many Monsters
There is no way to email you this directly, so I must be ridiculous and post this as a review. I have been a long time listener of your podcast, but I feel you did women and all underrepresented and marginalized communities a real disservice with how you chose to portray this episode. This woman, who was ostracized by her own people and who fled her homelands, only to be imprisoned, raped and exploited by men and a culture she was unfamiliar with, was portrayed as simply an example of a “real life monster.” The monsters are the men who imprisoned and raped her, to portray otherwise was to simply validate white male heteronormative society. I’m disappointed in you Richard MacLean Smith. Please do better in the future.

Really nosedived lately
This used to be my favorite podcast until the last season or so. Way too many ads and their placement is staggeringly ill placed (ie. Brutal child murder description with sudden “poopoo kitty” litter ad). Also yeah the new narration style has me zoning out and not listening at all. I never even finish a single episode now where I used to anticipate each new one in the past.
I even bought the book and couldn’t get through it the chosen narrator (NOT Richard Maclean Smith- why? Why wouldn’t you read your own book?) is so awful I first thought it was a computer generated voice.

Unexplainably my favorite.
This has, surprisingly, become my go-to paranormal podcast. This man has a gift of a speaking voice, and I’m not sure what it is, bc there isn’t much inflection. Maybe it is him NOT over-acting it. The WAY he tells the stories places me IN them. Believable rather than outlandish. If he is writing the copy, he does it so fluently & descriptively. And the subtle soundtrack adds without taking away the focus. I give a standing-ovation to this podcast. Bravo. Well done.

Fb commercials are over the top/love the show
I have listened to each episode multiple times, I queue up a bunch when going to bed. I love his voice for end of the day relaxing. But OMG I had to stop it in the middle of the night, the incessant repeat of the same stupid fb group ads is majorly annoying. They’ll repeat the same one four times straight. It’s ridiculous.
It isn’t just the stories that make this podcast great. It’s the way they are told with historical and social context that provides so much insight into how humans interact with each other and the world around them and how that is both influenced and is changed by extraordinary and unexplained phenomena.
I’m most impressed by the discussions around the philosophical and sociological underpinnings of each story which give Unexplained a lot more heft than other shows.

Narrator “Droning”
It’s a pity that the narrator has changed the way he speaks. I really enjoyed this podcast for the first couple of seasons, but the way he speaks now is irritating so distracting. The inflections throughout his sentences are so sing-songy and yet so monotone that it sounds like he’s reading from a sheet of paper and “droning on” about the stories. An intelligent, eerie, and highly recommended podcast.
I am a librarian that majored in philosophy and have a strong interest in all things unexplained and unexplainable. I listen to a lot of podcasts on subjects like true crime, strange mysteries, the occult, and the paranormal, and I have to say in all sincerity that this is the best podcast I have ever listened to. The narration and music is unmatched. The music itself is so entrancing that I listen to it often on SoundCloud. RM…C creates highly intelligent, well written episodes that delicately straddle the line between the known and the unknowable, the possibility of the miraculous and the limits of human perception. He never attempts an answer but rather leaves you with a beautiful, lingering feeling that can only be described as a wordless imprint of the mysterious and how it never releases us from its attraction and wonder. This podcast has truly enhanced my intellectual and inner-life.

Unexplained, the Podcast
This is one of the best podcasts for so many reasons. #1 of course, is Richard Maclean Smith’s narration. #2 is the great background music that is just the right blend of spooky and lilting that draws you in. #3 is the content. R.M. Smith is a superb podcasting host. His voice alone soothes. I could listen to him read the phone book his Pronunciation and intelligence makes for addictive listening. But when you take that voice and conviction, marry it with true crime and the paranormal... What you get is a comprehensive, concise, articulate and entertaining 30-60 mins podcast every Tuesday. Great Stories Tainted by Politics
I’m not sure why producers can’t help themselves inject politics into completely unrelated stories, but it has spoiled too many shows to count. I search out mystery and paranormal podcasts for an escape from politics, not to hear what the producer thinks about American foreign policy. Too bad!

Quality of topics are slipping, sadly...
Man, I looooved this podcast for years and support RMC on Patreon, esp. when the pandemic hit and he lost his original sponsors. RMC is an amazing storyteller and I actually love the measured tone and pacing of his voice. But there have been a lot of episodes this season I’ve had to skip - too many gruesome murder stories, rather than unexplained phenomena. Also, like, Charles Manson?! That’s not an unexplained mystery. We don’t need anymore murder stories - there’s plenty of those on other podcasts, Netflix, etc. Please bring more of the ufo/haunting/anomalous occurances/weird witch tree, etc. topics back into the rotation, Richard! 🙏

My favorite podcast
If you like tales of strange, creepy, or macabre events, and mysteries, this podcast is for you. I find it more riveting and thought-provoking than LORE, a podcast that I also like. The author’s research, his storytelling, and his ability to make uncanny and thoughtful connections between events, as well as his philosophical musings on what events or their mystery might mean, are fascinating and intriguing. I really like the narrator’s voice, his pace, the background music, and the overall feel of this podcast. I’ve recommended it to several family members and friends, who have all liked it so much, it’s become their favorite as well.

Annoyed with the ads
I tried out this podcast, but jut found it too annoying that the ads were woven seamlessly into the narrative. Here I am, listening to a story about a man who supposedly has been living for centuries and then all of a sudden the speaker is talking about some sort of discount code for vitamins? Um, no thanks. I wasn’t even that engaged with the story itself - I couldn’t suspend disbelief at all. And then the vitamin ad. Time to unsubscribe! That being said, I thought the narrator had a good voice.

Hey, this happened but I’mma’ tell you super slow
This podcast was good at onset.
Today (2021) a short story becomes a multi-part, disappointing earful.
Great premise ruined by the host dragging out every tale until it isn’t tolerable for listening.

Story telling podcast I’ve listened to, and I’ve tried all in this genre. Great quality, great voice, a bit short sometimes but overall great! I’d really appreciate longer stories to fall asleep to but I’m going to stick with this show regardless.

Torn
I absolutely love listening to Richard Maclean (pregnant pause) Smith. His voice pulls you in with every episode. This podcast subtly takes creepy to a new level. That being said, I am torn. I WANT MORE! I’m the type of person who needs at least thirty minutes of product before you have my attention. Sometimes Unexplained is only frustratingly fifteen minutes. Other times the episodes run almost an hour. Please keep bringing us longer episodes. I will keep happily uncomfortably listening.

My happy place
I accidentally came across Richard’S podcast on Spotify and decided to listen to one episode. It was addiction at first second. The stories are so engaging and entertaining however the most important and effective part of his podcasts was his “voice”! He has become my very own personal therapist just by how soothing and calming his voice is. I highly highly highly recommend it!

EPISODES ARE WAY TOO SHORT LATELY
So interesting and easy to listen to. Very well researched and the narrator has a fantastic voice. Just wish the episodes were longer and released more frequently. The episodes keep getting shorter and shorter it seems. The quality is definitely waning. Very unfortunate because this was THE podcast I always looked forward to. I understand Richard uses this podcast to make money, so why not put more money effort into it like he used to?? He has SO much untapped potential. Hoping he picks up the pace and introduces some nice long quality episodes consistently.

Exceptional and Addictive!
This is without a doubt my favorite podcast. Being passionate about history and a scary story enthusiast, Unexplained hits all the high marks in all the right places. Richard MacLean Smith is remarkable as a narrator, as he takes you on a journey of the mysterious and macabre with heavy doses of historical informational. His research is thorough and the tales incredibly satisfying. I was so lucky to find this podcast over the fall, and proceeded to indulge in proper binge. Just a charming voice regurgitating Wikipedia
I really wanted to like this but there just isn’t anything significant to like. I liked his voice but a 30 min short with several minutes of ads isn’t a good podcast. I got more information on Wikipedia in less time with no ads. Something isn’t “unexplained” because you gloss over it quickly and neglect logical explanations.

Best podcast out there
Honestly, this is the best podcast in any category. From the storytelling of Richard Maclean...Smith, to the perfect moody music, to the bizarre and enlightening subject matter, it’s all 100% perfect. It’s often compared to bigger marquee pods out there in similar categories but Unexplained is truly incomparable. Been listening since day 1 pretty much. Weird narration
I don’t understand how there are so many 5 star reviews... the way his voice fluctuates up at the end of every word makes it impossible to follow. He also sounds like he’s reading this aloud for the first time and punctuates each. Word. One. At. A. Time. As if he can’t read a sentence at once.

White euro rappers!!! They are most likely little momma boys in skinny jeans carrying a man purse. Like the typical EU male. Very feminine. I don’t know how Richard finds all these stories, but they’re all really remarkable. Haunting
Between his voice and his music, Richard sets the stage for a thought provoking dive into each tale. I love the story structure, the asides from the narrator, and the haunting nature of each story. Not unexplained
How many times can you say "conspiracy theory" in a 20 minute podcast? Seems like a lot. Sounded like you think you've already sorted out several actual conspiracies, but only provide your opinion and no proof. Maybe research more before you post or just stick to unexplained stuff like the name says...

Truth
When speaking of truth you need to do your research. You are incorrect about how Catholicism ended in the monarchy of England. The short story is that in the 1530’s King Henry VIII wanted an annulment from his wife because she hadn’t bore him a son and heir to the crown. The pope refused to grant the annulment (you can study Catholic doctrine as to why any pope would not grant that request) so King Henry created the Church of England. In other words made up his own religion.

This used to be one of absolute favorites, but I’m not feeling this new season. It’s obviously still super well researched and written, but the stories don’t feel like classic unexplained stories. You know how Ryan Bergara sets a spooky tone with a tale only to have Shane hilariously shatter that creepy vibe with a crazy interjection? Welcome back
I have missed your soothing voice over these months. So glad you’re back!
Yay! New season starts August 28th! We have missed you terribly Richard over here across the pond! Thank you for updating us.
old review:
We miss you Richard! Please update us soon if you can! We hope you are well!
I wanted to add on quickly that the “Choose your own Adventure” mini-episodes for Halloween WERE FANTASTIC! I tried them all, making different choices each time, and the writing was so vivid and the sound cues so perfect that I actually did feel tingly chills. I also felt a wave of nostalgia for those fantasy choose your own adventure books I read as a kid!! Such a great idea — thank you for making this Halloween extra special!
For the well-earned five star review:
For fans of any podcasts that touch on the “paranormal” or “mysterious” subject matter(s), as well as true crime and all sorts of fascinating topics not easily classifiable, this podcast is an absolute must! It boasts an outstanding narrator: Richard has a lovely voice and a clear English accent that I’m sure many listeners from many countries will appreciate for its clarity as well as its general smoothness and rich tone quality.
Unexplained the podcast also achieves a near-perfect balance of depth and delivery — discussing key details about the matter being explored while blending the details together with the craft of storytelling — the episodes move at a quick clip yet never feel underdeveloped or overdone. You will love listening to every minute (if for example you prefer long discussions of paranormal subject matter there are great podcasts available like Astonishing Legends that cover that material in a long format very well).
Unexplained features bite-sized episodes that fall roughly into the 30-40 minute range, and it is replete with graceful touches that make it a superior example of the vanishing art form of oral storytelling. The podcast is a shining example of lovingly crafted writing with a superb vocal delivery. Unlike certain true crime podcasts that rely on ridiculously overwrought writing and/or extremely jarring shifts from stupid “comic” banter to the dull reading of prepared scripts (too-frequently based on “research” from Wikipedia — sigh) and then back again, with “ooohs” and “aaaahs” and gasps delivered by the person not (poorly) reading the prepared scripts, Richard captures our attention and holds it because he *can tell a story well!*
Richard is an outstanding example of wonderful storytelling — he has a great voice combined with an outstanding sense of the art of delivery. His sense of timing, his awareness of the importance of modulating the volume of his voice, and his shifts in emphasis — so that stories aren’t just read in a monotone from a script unless another podcaster is there for banter — make this podcast a winner. Bravo!!! Highly recommended!

Meat that moves off plate on its own video
The video out there on the internet that shows a piece of pink meat moving off the plate and landing on the floor is nothing special. Its a frog leg. The meat from a uncooked frog leg. The reason it moves like that is because they put 🧂 on it. When🧂 is put on freshly skinned frog legs the nerves will react and cause it to move on its own and twitch and jiggle. Trust me, I live in Florida and I enjoy frog legs, they actually do taste like chicken. It’s terrifying at first but it’s not supernatural or anything but it’s also hilarious once you understand it.

What a great show. Mr. Smith tells these stories like as he experienced, making them all the more unsettling and intriguing. There’s another podcast, “Paranormal Mysteries”, hosted by Nick. Missed dearly
I’ve listened through this entire podcast series twice now. Social distancing has been difficult but listening to this all the way through again has helped. I hope that you’re able to return to the podcast world again soon. We all miss your story telling! ❤️

Missing Richard McLain Smith
I'm a massive fan of this podcast. The host, Richard, has one of the greatest voices of all time and I love falling asleep to these great stories and mysterious happenings. This is definitely my number one favorite podcast. I miss waiting for the latest episodes, I miss falling asleep listening to some of the best stories ever and I miss Richard McLain Smith. For someone who I've never met before I miss the gut like we're old friends. Hope to hear you soon

Please come back!
Hands down one of the best pod casts around. The atmosphere and textured lairs of each episode is second to none. RMS has a tone and cadence that keeps hang on and longing for each word and each episode. My life is less now with him gone. PLEASE SPONSOR THIS MAN!!!!

Excellent <3
This is an incredible podcast and I’m honestly shocked people have negative things to say about it. Every episode is well-researched, atmospheric and intriguing.
I hate when podcasters are ridiculously over dramatic so I love that he lets the content speak for itself. He has such a lovely voice and I love listening to episodes before going to bed. I love this show because it’s always intriguing and spooky without being terrifying or over the top. Best of luck to you, Richard. Hope things start looking up 💛

I love this podcast, he covers stories I’ve never heard of before. I love that he is matter of fact and there isn’t any wasted time chatting about unrelated things. Super interesting and as a bonus he has the most soothing voice!

Exquisite and Unnerving
This podcast is easily one of my favorite podcasts of all time. Great music and excellent storytelling. Some of the stories are heartbreaking like “The Last Flight”. Some not for the faint of heart like “Demons in Suburbia.” Nor do they provide easy answers like 2017’s Halloween episode on Bridget Boland. You are entering Chapel Perilous.

Perfect
I’ve been listening for years now, and haven’t found a more intriguing and beautifully written show. The host has the most colorful language that conveys the true horror and suspense of the unexplained events he discusses. Perfect podcast.

Great Podcast & Book
I’ve been a fan of the podcast since day one! The episodes are well written, executed and produced. I understand times are difficult. I too was eagerly awaiting the release of the newest season and, have to admit, was disappointed when it didn’t come out. However, I remembered that Richard had written a book based on his podcast with stories that were not covered in podcast episodes. I decided to purchase the book to tide me over and support him. I’m so glad I did! The book is just as good as listening to the podcast and just as creepy. You’ll not want to put it down! If you’re a fan, the book is definitely an alternative way to support this amazing podcast and the work of Richard MacLean...Smith.

I learn a lot from this podcast… about intriguing mysteries, but also about thinking about what those mysteries say about the world, psychology, society, and reality. Very well done.

Such a quality podcast!!
I stumbled upon this podcast when it was suggested as a similar podcast to ones I listen to. I am so glad it was suggested to me, since it is an easy podcast to fall in love with!! Richard is a great narrator and storyteller with just the right cadence. He talks about cases from the UK and the US, mainly, as well as some familiar high profile cases like Area 51 and The Dyatlov Incident. It is a great podcast for spooky happenings that is well researched, well produced and well executed.

The Best!
One of my favorite podcasts and the first podcast I had subscribed to.
Richard does such a great job crafting each and every episode. I also enjoy that he plays his guitar and sings at the end of a live episode!

We’re behind you, Richard MacLean....Smith
Of course you need to get paid for your work! There was no reason for anyone to think our world would be facing this crisis - this is your career and you couldn’t have planned this. Thank you for the message, thank you for the years of enjoyment, and I look forward to the new season when we reach our new normal.

Amazing podcast!
This is directed at the person who recently left a rude one star review because the new season was postponed. They whined that they unsubscribes because the new season is postponed and criticized the shows host for “doing it just for the money” when this show is their actual job. This is an amazing show and it is selfish to put your own desire to costume FREE content over the livelihood and well being of its creator. I can’t wait to listen to the new season and I will patiently do so. Much love to the shows creator and host and I hope you are doing well and staying safe during this world crisis.

I love this podcast!
Richard’s voice is so expressive and the speed at which he speaks also pleases me, because it’s not irritatingly fast or infuriatingly slow, but nearly perfect. The background music is wonderful and perfectly sets the mood that is supported by his tone of voice.
His subject material is intriguing and presented in masterful story telling. I love how he managed to twist the raw around at the end to make me question my existence. The way in which he is slowly weaving a web of stories, that often intersect when you least expect it, has grabbed hold of my attention and I very much doubt whether it will ever let go.
I can’t wait to see what Richard has in store for us next.

Wow, everyone’s loosing their jobs. Sad you only do this to monetize when everyone’s been waiting. Un-subscribing even though I loved this podcast. Don’t make pod casting your full time job... really?

Truly one of the best
I’ve listened to this podcast for a couple of years and RMS is one of the best story tellers full stop. I always look forward to his podcast dropping and I was sad to hear this season was delayed due to COVID-19. Hang tough RMS!

Masterful
Richard definitely achieves his apparent goal to create a podcast with deep mystery, surrealism, & humor.
I listen to longer podcasts to help me sleep. Over the years, the episodes have gotten shorter and the music (apparently his) have become even deeper and more hypnotizing, especially in 2019.

Absolutely brilliant
This has to be my favourite podcast. The stories are superbly written. Tons of descriptive detail that makes you feel as though you’re transported in time and experiencing the story for yourself, and at the same time no unnecessary banter or repetitiveness.
There’s a great breadth of types of stories ranging from haunted houses to getting lost in the Amazon forest. I’m always pleasantly surprised by how intriguing the episode is. The only time I’ve ever stopped an episode was when it was genuinely so creepy that I needed to wait until someone was home so I wouldn’t be alone while listening.
As an extra bonus his voice is very smooth and makes for a lovely narrator.
Couldn’t recommend it more!
