Episode 254 Women in the Workplace
Today was the first day I found and started listening to this podcast and it resonated with me so much as I moved out of Atlanta from college to a predominantly white area for my work. This episode gave me some really good insight I feel early on in my career that I can use moving forward. Thank you Dr. Harden Bradford and Dr. Thomas!

Love the show, not the episode descriptions
As much as I love the show, I wish the description of each episode was at the top of the text rather than after the description of the show. We know what the podcast is about, but telling us what each episode is about is more important. Too much text to read or scroll past makes me delete the episode. I listen to a lot of podcasts, this is the only one that does this.

Dr. Harden Bradford’s podcast is empowering! I’m continually enlightened and inspired by her expertise, topics and guests. Not only does Dr. Harden Bradford’s work help me personally, I share it with my 32 year old daughter and others which exemplifies it’s community impact This gift and resource is invaluable!

This podcast is amazing and also the first one I’ve ever reviewed. I’ve learned many a lesson here that’s impacted my personal and professional life. I’m a budding therapist currently getting my masters in Marriage and Family Therapy and I use some of the techniques learned here to assist with helping others. Thank you.

Excellent space to feel understood and comforted by other beautiful women
I’m new and I’m making my way through the podcasts of interest and even some I didn’t think I’d like but I find learning about different topics very valuable. I also have enjoyed the three for Thursday chats, the check ins, book club and the sex talk in September with Goddie (Goody). Definitely will stick with this beautiful community of women who aren’t afraid to say I need help and I don’t have it all together as society pegs us as the strong black woman… We have pain, tears, deep feelings, struggles, wins, love, accomplishments, blessings from God, everything a human being has. We aren’t super human and if we have a tough exterior it’s the way we’ve learned to cope and care for ourselves. Love this podcast and Dr Joy’s “Sister Circle” app. It’s well worth my time and energy to get and give support to fellow sisters of any color.

Content needs refresh
Great podcast when I started listening a few years ago, but now the format is more interviews and sometimes gets a little self-promoty for the guests. But I get why bc BW experts and professionals have little spaces/platforms available to them so this show provides that. But perhaps a spin-off show would be better for that.

This is a much needed resource
I’m a new listener and so far I love it. I have started listening at the beginning episodes and I find the encouragement and advice very helpful. I also like to read the reviews of podcasts that I am new to. I read a review where the listener said they felt the podcast was racist, and I simply don’t understand how they arrived there. So often as black women we are told we have to include everyone while simultaneously being excluded by everyone. There are plenty of podcasts that cater to other demographics but very few that address the issues, needs and concerns of black women. Please keep doing your podcast as is. As a black woman in my mid forties I’m just now learning how to advocate for myself and that includes finding spaces where I can be my full self and feel valued as a human. I’m only a few episodes in and this is one of those spaces. I appreciate you sharing your expertise with us. It’s very much needed.

It’s okay
I really like this podcast and the messages it’s giving out but, I see it as racist .Black women aren’t the only females who struggle with things or need to be encouraged, their are many other women who need motivation and inspiration not just African American women. It’s really good just need to work on giving inspiration to other cultures.

I’m surprised I haven’t wrote a review for TFBG. This is my all time favorite podcast, and I love what Dr. Joy is doing for the community. I’ve been listening to this podcast consistently since about 2018 and it’s helped me so much, and has even helped me connect to the therapist I’m working with now. The content, stories, and experiences she creates are so meaningful and necessary in today’s world. I’m really grateful to get a notification each Wednesday about a new episode and love all the gems I get from listening. Please don’t change! I love this and can’t wait to read your upcoming book ❤️

I wish I could give more stars...
I don’t know why I haven’t written a review yet...but this podcast has been essential to my growth as an individual. The conversations are insightful, to-the-point, and really hones in on the dynamic you can find in therapy. I have had so many validating experiences while listening to this show and every episode seems to center me. Started listening during quarantine when I didn’t have the words to explain why things weren’t coming together when I had all this time to finally think and utilize what I thought were tools to improve my mental state. I have recommended this to all my sisters...because generational trauma is real ...and continue to share it with others.

Guests could go deeper…
The potential is there! The host is great at guiding the conversation and asking the right questions but it seems like the guests answer her questions in general terms, it drives me nuts! It would be more personal if the guests used some of their own real life antidotes and clear examples. No need to use names of course but just saying “uncovering is the first step and then depending on what it is, we can go from there” is extremely vague and doesn’t fully answer the question. I also think the conversation would be richer if the host included her own commentary to provide more of a back and forth dynamic. Not combative but to challenge/add to things the guests say. I would also like to see her push her guests more, tell them to stop being so general and really answer the questions!

Why is it always about capitalism
Because people choose to be materialistic and play the roles of the sociopath somehow their moral short comings is because of white supremacy capitalism. We need to be willing to say it’s a bad individual making bad choices Generating a scapegoat instead of holding them accountable seems the wrong way to go about it

Growing up as a hyper girl in the 60’s
I believe that was me. But my parents and family just thought It was a character trait. That corporal punishment to keep me in life along with other family trauma - Mother undiagnosed depression and anxiety. As an adult then being diagnosed with PMDD. Because of my drastic mood before my cycle. Poor choices in life - more trauma. Couldn’t find a partner who could deal with depressed times. Thrust into menopause due to excessive bleeding of fibroids. HRT gave me worse symptoms than the PMDD. Psychotherapy break in 2007. 72 hour hold. 30 day outpatient. Found psychologist. Diagnosis of manic & depression Moved to GA thyroid issues exacerbated. Eventually diagnosed with bi-polar. Found a wonderful black psychologist via Sweet Tea Sunday’s. Just switched to a black Nurse practitioner Psychiatrist. Who said many of my symptoms are due to thyroid issues. Going to Thyroid specialist - 3/15. Thank you Sweet Tea Sunday’s and your superb resources for Black Women. I’m on my way to wholeness - whatever that looks like for me.

Excellent questions!
As an interviewer, Dr Joy had a knack for asking the best questions - exactly what the listeners want to know - as well as paraphrasing the responses in a way that reinforces understanding. As a psychologist, she also asks great self-reflection questions - simple enough to process easily, yet deep enough to guide her listeners to improved self-awareness and better self-care.

I don’t know about this one
Firstly, get ready for her voice. Definitely not a radio/podcasting voice, very grating. Episode on single life, guest is definitely bitter, sounds like she doesn’t like men or hetero relationships, and is not helpful for single Black women who happen to also want to be in a relationship and marriage. Definitely toxic.

Insightful
The challenges of Black women physicians - I have worked in government for the last 5 years, and I am also in the military. I have no medical background at all, so I did not think that the episode about Black female physicians would resonate with me. It’s clear that as working Black women in a field in which we aren’t prevalent and people don’t expect us nor want us to thrive, we will experience similar discriminatory behavior and lack of support from others across the board. Love how relatable and uplifting the guests are.

Amazing Podcast!
I really appreciate this podcast. There have been so many beneficial nuggets that have been shared that have helped me identify and give language to things I’ve experienced in the past. Some of the topics have uncovered issues I’ve dealt with and some that I’m still dealing with and strategies to help me change for the better. Thank you Dr. Joy!

This Show Stopped Me Quitting
I would recommend this podcast to any and everyone (actually I have!) Dr. Joy is an expert at addressing taboo topics that we, as women of color, tend to push to the side. This show has stopped me from quitting my job, body shaming myself (on the regular), and avoiding my childhood trauma. Thank you God for making her a healer and a vessel to so many women. Love you Dr. Joy!

A friend of mine recommended this to me and I instantly fell in love with this podcast! Not even 10 minutes into the first one I listened to! As a black woman I've struggled so much on so many levels when it comes to relationships with people and I was never taught to discuss personal issues! Whether that’s friendships, intimate relationships, and family. With just one video I felt so relieved. I no longer feel alone in my struggles! I’m so thankful for this podcast and I highly recommend. It’s so positive, enlightening, inspiring, and educational! Please don’t stop uploading.

Where is the content?
I listen to one of her episodes randomly. It was a 13 minute long episode, the first 5 minutes included an introduction and 2 advertisements. The last 4 minutes were referring people to go to her website and the same 2 advertisements. So from the 13 minute episode only a good 4 1/3 minute was “useful” content. Just wow! A truly waste of time. Maybe it was the episode I happened to click on, but maybe the creator should focus on having longer episodes if they plan on having 9 minutes of intro/closing with adds and plugs to their own website in one podcast.

The first podcast I listened to was Getting Rid of Sexual Shame and it was so refreshing to hear that conversation. Sexual trauma has definitely shaped the way that I have learned about sex, so hearing Dr. Lexx's insight helped me see myself and also realize that I have actually been using some of the grounding and coping skills already. As a Mental Health Professional in a work setting populated by the dominate culture, I begin to question and doubt my perception regarding some of my workplace observations and experiences. I needed a place to connect with professionals who could validate, provide insight as well as different perspectives on how to cope. Thank you so much Dr. Joy!

Not really Self-Help
I liked to podcast at first, but I don’t think it is useful for self-help outside of therapy. It’s more like the days in school when you have a public speaker come into class. Just regurgitating information and then never really having a resolution.

Amazing!
This is such a needed resource within the black community. This is helpful to many who are in therapy and for those who are reluctant but taking baby steps on their way to finally booking a session. As a fellow therapist, I know how difficult it is for women of color to find therapists that look like us, or who can relate to us in a way that allows us to feel seen and heard. I tune in regularly and have found every episode useful to me and my practice. This was a genius idea!

Love! Love! 💗💗
This podcast is just what we need in the climate right now. I love how Dr. Joy breaks everything down, and gives practical resources. It’s great to hear women of color having important conversation, especially when most of us have grown up with the stigma of therapy being for “ those people”. Keep up the great work Dr. Joy.

Safe space
I love that there is a space dedicated to our mental health. The best decision I made this year has been to start going to therapy. Because it has allowed me a space to really explore things that I didn’t comfortable talking about in full depth with anyone else. And I love having this as a place that allow more of those thoughts and conversations. I love that this is making it normal to a larger audience to make mental health a priority. This is very important and a major step in the right direction. I really hope it points more and more people into the direction of taking the step to get some kind of mental and emotional support.

This podcast does exactly what I’m sure it sought to do, “normalize therapy”. Insightful, funny, chock full of resources. Love the disclaimer before each episode that this is not a replacement for therapy.

Thoughtful
I am absolutely enjoying this podcast. Since there are literally hundreds of podcasts to choose from it's hard to know where I can find good ones. I actually saw this one listed on FB as podcasts from women of color and decided to try it out. I am happy that I found it. I really enjoy the variety of topics being discussed. I am learning quite a bit and I love that it gives you thought provoking information. Keep up the good work Dr. Joy!

Please Be Conscience of Your Vocal Fry
I am enjoying your podcast -- and it's a theater of the mind. However, your vocal fry is really distracting to take -- for a listener, it's excruciating and can be controlled. That's my only ask. Overall, I am enjoying the subjects, and your breadth of knowledge. These are things I need and can implement in my life. I know it's hard-work placing a quality 'case together -- so good job!

I just wanted to say thank you for putting your passion out into the world and making it easier for black girls to get the help they need. Mental health is very important and like you said, black girls want to talk to other black girls so they don't have to feel judged or ashamed. So again, thank you from one professional to another.

THIS PODCAST IS A MUST!!!!
This is an AMAZING podcast!!!! As a therapist, I am aware of the stigma in the African-American community (as well as other minority communities) when it comes to therapy. Dr. Joy has done a phenomenal job of shattering the stereotypes of what people think of a typical therapist. Listening to her is like listening to an intelligent, down-to-earth, friend who just happens to have a PhD. Wonderful job Dr. Joy, I truly enjoy listening!!!

Someone suggested this podcast on twitter and of course I had to support a black woman business. When I say that I kept pausing this episode to write down information or wanted hear the word again, it took me almost an hour to finish a half hour episode. I'm in love off of one listen! I genuinely encourage people to give this podcast a chance. She's delightful and patient with the conversation, nothing seems rushed.

Auntie Dr. Joy!
I absolutely LOVE this podcast! As a doctoral student in counselor education, I am always looking for resources about counseling and mental health with Black girls/women. I feel so at home with Dr. Joy and anticipate her sessions every week! Her southern charm makes me feel like she's also my auntie, so I call her "auntie Dr. Joy" in my head. She is everything that I would look for in a counselor and I finally feel like I have a (podcast) mentor and model for what counseling looks like for Black girls/women!

Joining me today are therapists Dr. Donna Oriowo, based in the DMV, and Josephine Ampaw-Greene, in Denver, Colorado. - Session 295: A Conversation On Healthy Friendships with Devi BrownThe Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. Y’all! My debut book, Sisterhood Heals, will be out on June 27, 2023 and you can officially pre-order your copy right now at sisterhoodheals.com! This is such a huge accomplishment and I can’t wait for all of the incredible conversations I know we’re going to have once you get your copy and can check it out. In honor of this huge milestone, I wanted to share a very special conversation with you this week. At the end of last year, Wellness educator, Author, and Podcast Host, Devi Brown, who’s been a guest here on the podcast a few times, invited me to be a guest on her podcast, Dropping Gems. Devi didn’t know it at the time but I was struggling with edits to the book and this one conversation with her reinvigorated my spirit and gave me a whole new excitement about the material. It felt like she had seen the pages even though it wasn’t yet done. I feel like that’s how sisterhood works sometimes, you don’t always know what you need and then a sister shows up with an answer you weren’t expecting. In this conversation we chatted about setting boundaries with compassion in friendship, reciprocity in friendship, and how having difficult conversations can often bring us closer. - Session 294: Understanding Anti-Fat BiasThe Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. In the recent news cycle, there have been a handful of videos trending that participate in Anti-Fat rhetoric. These pieces of media work to diminish the fat acceptance movement utilizing scare tactics like shame and ridicule under the guise of “tough love.” In actuality, these methods of behavior are rooted in fatphobia and highlight how much body shaming has been indoctrinated into all of us. To discuss Anti-Fat bias more at length, this week I’m joined by Author, Advocate, and Yoga Teacher Jessamyn Stanley. As a Fat Black Femme navigating the predominantly white, able-bodied, cisgender world of Yoga, Jessamyn has spent her career breaking down barriers in the wellness industry and showing that all bodies are worthy. In our conversation, we discuss the importance of reclaiming the word Fat, the yoga industrial complex, the power of listening to the teacher that lives inside us all, and how practicing self-care and self-acceptance is an act of service to the community around you. - Therapy for Black Girls Feb 8 · 32m Session 293: Black Women & The Superwoman SchemaThe Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. We often sing praises of the “strong Black woman,” but the moniker is a double-edged sword. Black women are strong, calm, and nurturing while constantly pushing aside our well-being and surviving in silence. There’s a name for this phenomenon, the Superwoman Schema or Syndrome. Today I'm joined by Dr. Cheryl Woods- Giscombe, the woman who developed the groundbreaking conceptual framework to explore how Black women experience stress. Dr. Woods- Giscombe is a distinguished associate professor of quality of life, health promotion, and wellness at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research focuses on how stress leads to health disparities among African Americans. In our conversation, we discuss the origins of the Black “Superwoman” trope, how the effects of “Superwoman” syndrome show up in our everyday lives, and tips for those struggling with taking off their capes. - Bonus, The Best Man: Final ChaptersThe Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. Since its 1999 theatrical premiere The Best Man franchise has been a beloved staple within our community. It was the talk of the town once again when the sequel, The Best Man Holiday, debuted in 2013. And now, 24 years later, under the direction of Malcolm D. Lee and featuring the original acclaimed cast aka the “Justice League of Black Hollywood.” The Best Man Final Chapters has once again ignited our conversations on what it means to be in community with friends and family. The kind of interpersonal relationships that know you well enough to tell you about yourself and hold space for you when you’ve lost who you are. To discuss The Best Man: Final Chapters in-depth, this week, I'm in conversation with 2 more incredible members of the team, Content Director, Kamron Taylor and Content Specialist, Gorgeous West. In our conversation we explore, how the limited series met and missed our expectations, which character dynamics we were most enthralled by and disappointed in, and how we feel knowing that these are our final moments with Quentin, Shelby, Harper, Robyn, Murch, Candace, Lance, and Jordan. This episode does contain spoilers. Resources Visit our Amazon Store for all the books mentioned on the podcast. Sisterhood Heals is now available for pre-order! - Session 292: Quiet Firing & Life After LayoffsThe Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. Within the last few months you might have seen or heard the term “quiet firing” circulating on your local news stations, LinkedIn profiles, or social media accounts. The term refers to a method used by employers to drive employees to quit on their own volition. To discuss quiet firing more at length, this week I’m joined by Dr. Ella F. Washington, an organizational psychologist, DEI expert, and Professor of Practice at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business. In Part 1 of our conversation we discuss how to identify if quiet firing is happening in your workplace, the psychological effects of being quietly fired, and how biases and a lack of managerial training in the workplace impact how managers give critical feedback to employees. In Part 2 of our conversation we also hear the first hand testimony of TBG Community Member, Flo, who found herself out of work in the midst of the pandemic. - Session 285: Wakanda Forever, Producers' ChatThe Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. In our first introduction to Wakanda, we flocked to the theaters with jubilation and pride to revel in the on-screen magnificence. The characters, costumes, and world-building. But, this time, the experience of going to the movies with family and friends to see the new Black Panther film felt fundamentally different. Many of us were adorned in white, bodies calm, and hearts steady as we prepared for what we knew would be both a cinematic gem and a grieving experience. Grief for the loss of our beloved Chadwick Boseman, our Black Panther, grief for the world that has drastically changed since the original film premiered in 2018, and the private grief we all hold in our hearts for our own meaningful reasons. It all felt like seeing your favorite cousins at a funeral. You're happy to see them because it's been a minute, but you wish it were under different circumstances. This week, our beloved podcast production team, Cindy, Ellice, and Fredia join me to discuss Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever. We explored the complexities of grief displayed across characters in the film, comment on storylines we were surprised and delighted by, and make predictions for the future of the Black Panther franchise. Growing up, you might have heard that people’s moods change with the season. But did you know that there’s actually some science behind that? Despite Fall & Winter being a time for family traditions and celebrations, it’s also a time when more people may experience feelings of sadness, irritability, and fatigue. - Session 280: The Criminalization of Black YouthThe Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. If you’re joining us in the United States, our local elections are right around the corner. A time to advocate for what we believe in and call for reform in this country, a political right many Black women fought for in the past and continue to fight for today. For some of us, the ballots will include options to promote criminal justice reform and, more specifically, police reform. The history of police activity within the Black American community is lengthy and muddled with trauma. Yet, one facet of that history that is too often overlooked is the police’s history with Black children. This week I’m joined by Blume Professor of Law and Director of the Juvenile Justice Clinic and Initiative at Georgetown Law and former Lead Attorney of the Juvenile Unit at the D.C. Public Defender Service, Kristin Henning. We discussed the narrative that exists around fearing Black children, how Black children are criminalized for adolescent behavior, how over-policing impacts mental health and identify formation, and how public health approaches in schools and within our communities can remove the footprint of police in the everyday lives of Black children. - Session 279: The Power of Shadow WorkThe Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. It’s officially spooky season y’all! For many of us, the idea of gazing into the darkest parts of ourselves is more terrifying than any Halloween thriller or monster movie we could ever watch. It can difficult emotional work to dig up the parts of ourselves that we’d rather bury six feet under. The repressed parts of ourselves often challenge who we think we are and bring up feelings we’d rather forget. But what if we learned to integrate and accept the parts of ourselves we hide in the dark? What if uncovering the parts of ourselves we’re hiding in the shadows will illuminate who we really want to be? This week I’m joined by licensed therapist and author of The Shadow Work Workbook: Self-Care Exercises for Healing Your Trauma and Exploring Your Hidden Self, Jor-El Caraballo. Our conversation explores how shadow work allows for more self acceptance and living a more aligned life and the hidden gifts and talents that may be locked away in our shadow selves. - Session 278: ICYMI, What You Need to Know About Domestic ViolenceThe Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. Historically, Black women are disproportionately impacted by domestic violence. However, the pandemic has exacerbated violence and abuse toward Black women. Due to the health and financial challenges of COVID-19, many Black women have been isolated in their homes and unable to find safety from abusive partners. As we commemorate National Domestic Violence Awareness Month this month, I wanted to make sure you didn’t miss the critical conversation I had with Dr. Shanita Brown in 2019. Dr. Brown is a licensed professional counselor, speaker, educator and trainer in NC that fosters transformative and empowering dialogue about intimate partner violence & mental health wellness. She and I chatted about how you can recognize the signs of domestic violence, why it’s important to understand domestic violence in the context of power and control as opposed to anger management, and how you can support a loved one who may be in a relationship with an abusive partner. Plus, Dr. Brown shared tons of incredible resources for anyone seeking additional help. Resources Visit our Amazon Store for all the books mentioned on the podcast.
