Yay Alyson is back!
I love this podcast so much and was so happy to listen to a new episode. The stories and the background music are divinely creepy and entertaining. One of the few podcasts I listen to on a regular basis.

My top spooky and historical podcast!
I have loved this podcast for a couple years and get very excited whenever she drops a new episode. I often go back and re-listen to my favorites! The episodes are so well done and are incredibly well written and researched.

Spooky and so peaceful!
I absolutely love this podcast and have started listening every night before bed because her voice is so relaxing. There are bits of history, true crime, cultural commentary, spookiness, and poetry all woven together in a really well researched and thoughtful way.

Stories are great.
The stories are all great. Like others I wish there were more consistent episodes, but I understand that that’s been addressed. I also understand that it’s being told in a way to be spooky, but the pauses at unnatural times do really throw me. Sometimes I think my phone stopped or that it’s a pause that’s happening at a natural place and am confused when it picks up mid sentence, etc. I was also pretty bummed when a new episode went up and more than half of said super short episode was ads. I get tossing an ad in as this is how money is made, but with infrequent posting it felt crummy to get hit with an episode that was mostly trying to sell other stuff. Overall Alison is doing something I could never do and I’ll continue to listen as new episodes come out. The stories are great and the content is perfectly creepy.

What’s with the voice affectation? You can tell the difference especially in earlier episodes and ads. The content is usually good. I skip the stories she writes herself.

October Spooky?
Seriously can’t believe this is a profession of Halloween is your season and you have released two shows ALL MONTH? I don’t even pay for this content yet I feel ripped off. I have no interest or passion in listening to something that has no interest or passion. Quite honestly the laziest show on my feed. I am surprised it still exists when it is so irreverent to its own purpose in its own Holiday Season. Morbid network is really letting anyone in with a microphone and they don’t care if you just dial it in. I will immediately unfollow so that someone more relevant will pop up on my feed and not bore me to death with a mediocre macabre. It should be the EASIEST job to dig up spooky historical facts, especially during Halloween. It’s like following a Christmas podcast that takes off for the holidays. What is your purpose? Why should I care if you don’t?

I really want to love this…
I really want to love this and was excited to see a decent amount of episodes to get through, BUT the narration (for me) is hard to listen to. The stories seem like they’re so good, but I find myself distracted and then frustrated with the cadence. :( I’ve even skipped around looking for titles that intrigued me. But sadly, it’s back to the drawing board.

Bland voice, Great stories! 🤔
The narrator’s voice is way to mono and it irks me to hear it obviously reading. I couldn’t tell that she broke from the story and went into ads. The stories sound like they’re super interesting, but man does that boring voice ruin it for me. I don’t care if you have a lisp or a retainer. That’s all fine. But put some UMF into it. Bring it to life for me!!! Are you dead inside, narrator? It’s okay girl. I feel you.

Original story
Story is pretty good, I have to turn it down so low that I can barely hear it to get through the sound effects without turning it off immediately. We know what crunching bones sound like without them being played 8 times per episode. It would be much creepier if I could hear them talking over the sound effects.

Peak writing
The writing/scripting of this podcast is some of the best I’ve heard. Love the history, folklore, true crime, literature all mixed in but weaved together expertly for a cohesive narrative. Also loved listening to the original horror fiction, seriously impressive 👌🏼

Beautiful and facinating Podcast
This podcast is so interesting becasue Allison has a wonderful voice to listen to that is elegant and calm while talking so eloquently about some of the most macabre topics. I love that she includes so much history and detail in her podcasts and wait on pins and needles for the next one she releases.

This podcast is fantastic. I always learn something while being totally entertained. I love this podcast. The host is inviting while still a bit spooky. She is the perfect combination of the two. The stories are interesting and thought provoking. I find myself thinking about the story long after listening to it. I hope she continues to pump out episodes.

Great content, narration could be better
I love the content (especially the Poe) but the mispronunciation of fairly common words (“tapestry”, “eschew”, “tremulous”, “anatomist/autonomous” are some examples) is distracting and takes away from the gravitas of the stories. Just going over your script and double checking words you’re not sure about would go a long way.

Don’t you dare tell her
I love this podcast. The atmosphere is perfect— the host’s voice, the music, the scripts and the stories. The language she uses really paints a picture, and she throws in occasional razor sharp analysis, and humor too. But I won’t name the quirk that makes this podcast unique among all the spooky history podcasts out there. And you shouldn’t either. Don’t ruin it. It’s perfect the way it is.
I do this all the time

Stay Strange!
The delightful Alyson Horrocks has created a spellbinding show that delivers a variety of stories nestled in historical research and commentary. While I discovered the podcast as colorful autumn leaves fell and Halloween approached, I will definitely be awaiting new offerings. Here’s a toast to the many things we do not know, and the deeply disturbing things we do.

Excellent Storytelling of the Strange & Unusual
Excellent podcast. I am only on episode 4 but I am HOOKED! The musical accompaniment is amazing. Alyson’s storytelling is wonderful, but what stood out the most is that she gives a name and face to the victims. She genuinely cares and that’s something a lot of other podcasts don’t do but should. If you like a little spooky, true crime, history, and the strange & unusual then come on in. Sit a spell. And enjoy!

Name episode.
This was the first episode I listened to. Just a piece of a suggestion here. Folks don’t listen to a podcast for social commentary. You’re alienating half your audience- like it or not-regardless of your position. As M.J. said “ republicans buy shoes too.”

Dark Mood
The narrator’s voice is soothing, amused, spooky, reasonable. Stay away from mirrors. Horrocks has a mind like a spider, weaving together arcane bits of story into a seamless whole. She makes a WEIRD use of prepositions, and pronounces words like she’s never heard them out loud - but her sense of history and plot has made me decide that’s just her very own dialect, Langage de Horrocks. Because every episode is better than the last. Flawless.

The PERFECT creepy podcast!!
This podcast is INCREDIBLE. The narration is perfectly paced and pleasant to hear, the topics are extensively researched (and cover things that even I, a die-hard horror and creepy history fan for over 25 years, had never heard of), and the atmospheric music and sound effects create a deliciously creepy podcast experience. I cannot praise this podcast enough!

Perfect in every way.
Feeling empty after binge listening to each ‘Criminal’ episode, I ventured to find another podcast of similar nature. ‘The Strange and Unusual Podcast’ is a well-research and extremely well presented exposé on macabre instances, beliefs, and traditions in American (and European) culture. The podcast has found it’s voice by examining the ‘why’ element to our fears and nightmares, rather than just reporting them for a spooky chill. After listening to the entire series so far over the weekend, I eagerly await the next episode! And for those who are looking for some serious nightmare fuel, jump to (I believe) episode 18 for Alyson’s reading of ‘Smee’. 5 out of 5, 100%, one gold star, this podcast deserves your time!

Grow up.
I've listened to the first two episodes so far and this podcast has potential if the host A) learns how to enunciate and B) drops the gratuitous, sophomoric swearing in her pointless asides. She comes off like a six-year-old just learning to cuss. Stop it, Alyson, please! It's really juvenile and detracts from what otherwise could be an interesting story. Her latest story is tedious and overwrought. She writes like she gets paid by the adverb. With so much time between episodes, you’d think she would have time to edit. Oh, and the sound effects are stupid. At least she stopped cussing.

Loved it when it was classic stories.
I don’t connect with this writing style at all. It feels a little bit amateurish, and it’s frustrating because it’s hard to tell until a minute in whether or not it’s the podcaster’s aspirational fiction or if it’s actually a story that I want to connect with. I make my living as a novelist and it would feel so duplicitous to sneak my own fiction into a podcast that wasn’t initially created for self-promotion. The older episodes are better.

The Perfect Podcast I didn’t even know I was missing
I’ve always wanted to use that saying. I heard the ladies at MFM talking about this podcast. So jumped over listening to the 3 part Potions And Poisons episodes. Wow. This is a collection of very well told stories with hip modern twist. It’s has murder, death, and Macabre history. It’s all I could ask for in a podcast. I just hope that our gracious you host will put out episodes more frequently. Matter fact I think I’ll see if she has patreon or something. It’s that good. Update-NEED MORE EPISODES Please☠️💀☠️

Worth a listen if you like your chills intelligent!
Love the research and some of the odd topics she covers (the clown one? Perfection! Loved hearing about the origins of clowns) the color green? never knew! She’s a lovely narrator. I enjoy the format of each episode, sends the best kind of chills - intellectual and supernatural! I just wish it there were more, but if fewer mean keeping the quality, it’s worth it.

Wonderfully fantastic
I found this recently when looking further afield from the usual D&D and Lovecraftian podcasts I usually listen to. Alyson's narration is fantastic, but even more wonderful is her research and ability to weave together a story that enthralls her listeners. My only wish is for more episodes!

Macabre history
The podcaster draws on urban legends and folklore to make a chilling atmosphere right from the start. But the main part of the episodes is just as spellbinding and makes history come alive with in-depth information told so well that it doesn't feel dry at all. The non-supernatural themed murder episodes are a little gory, but they're really intriguing mysteries that linger -- and not just in the "that was gross" way.

One of my favorite podcasts
This podcast is wonderful. She always chooses extremely interesting topics that are very well researched. I love that she takes the time to explain things, and also that she’s sensitive to things that are potentially overwhelming. As much as I love horror, I get really upset when people talk about things like lobotomy or child torture and murder in gory and extensive detail; so I appreciate that she always warns us ahead of time and doesn’t go into extreme detail about those sorts of things. Keep up the great work!

Telling Ghost stories isn't easy, it takes a kind of talent to build tension and deliver a scare at the end, couple that with TEACHING and you've got yourself the kind of INFO-TAINMENT that gives you chills. ( O_o )

Obsessed with this podcast!
I had never quite gotten into podcasts until just recently after randomly coming across this one thanks to a shared post from an account I follow on Instagram. Most I had checked out in the past were boring, rambling rants sharing personal opinions on what felt like pretty pointless and trivial topics that left me thinking, "UGH. Why do people enjoy this?" I don't feel like that anymore! I LOVE Alyson Horrocks narration and storytelling style (I feel like I've time-traveled to a sitting room somewhere in the 19th century listening to someone tell ghost stories by a fire in a Victorian Gothic house). The storytelling is made better with the well-researched history attached to each story. I'm only bummed there aren't more episodes already that I can binge through (though replaying the ones already available won't be a bother at all). My favorite thing lately is to set the ambience by lighting some candles, turning off the lights, and listening to Alyson's stories while I wind down for the night. Thank you, Alyson! Your clear effort and hours of research, along with your fantastic storytelling and writing, is amazing!

Narration needs improvement
I agree with sommerkay. Her voice is too annoying for me. I thought it sounded like she had a retainer in her mouth as well, makes it extremely difficult to get into the stories. I really wanted to like it and I’ve tried to listen to several stories, but I lose interest quickly, can’t follow along because of her voice and how she narrates. She sounds like she’s reading and not doing a great job of it. I appreciate her passion and I’m sure it’s a lot of work, but she does not have a good podcast/story telling voice at all.

Strangely, I love it
As a new listener playing catch-up, I have a few observations. First, this is not the podcast for a girl jogging alone in the wee hours of the morning. (Clearly, a disclaimer is needed) Second, Alyson is amazing writer that lures with great openings, captivating stories and conclusions that circle back to the prelude. She has a smooth reading voice and a flare for performance timing. Lastly, I feel educated with each cast is a lesson in sociology, psychology and history. I love it!

Love or Hate-I love
1. Came here by recommendation from from MFM’s Georgia awhile back. 2. People love or hate her narrative style/voice-I love it and could listen to her read the phone book. 3. I just couldn’t get into Lore, but love this podcast. 4. Such great research and care with topics; I feel like a friend is sharing her college class on the strange and unusual with me during a slumber party. 5. Love the stories she writes/starts the episodes off with. 6. I know nothing of Ms. H’s personal life but one reviewer certainly seems to hold a grudge against her.

Good stories
I really enjoy the stories told on this podcast, but I think the narration needs some work. It makes it hard to get lost in the stories and get really into the podcast. A regular production schedule would also be a big benefit. It’s understandable that it can’t be a weekly podcast, but having a schedule would set expectations so I don’t totally forget about the podcast in between episodes.

It’s ok.
I was super getting into these ghostly podcasts but after listening to at least 10 of these- I just can’t get over this woman’s voice. She sounds like she has a large retainer in her mouth, causing her to lisp and sound teenager-y. To me, it became the only thing I could focus on. Took me well out of the ghostly mood. I wish I could unhear it but I can’t. Sometimes I think the episodes are like two hours long and when I look it’s been 20 minutes. It kinda drags. I appreciate the history but I can’t reconcile the nails on the chalk board effect her voice has on me.

Fantastic
I love the history behind these very scary and tragic stories. The way she presents the material is so professional, like a documentary or a storytelling type class lecture. It's obvious that she does a lot of research on her topic and puts together a well thought out script for the episode. She needs her own history tv show. For those commenting they don't like her voice, well that's just a matter of taste. She isn't going to suddenly fake an accent or have a new voice. I actually like her low kinda husky voice. It's like she's leaning in talking to you. That person who gave her one star saying she was ranting on and on about men, is flat out lying. Obviously this person has a bug up their behinds about Alyson, maybe it's someone who knows her and doesn't like her.

Better stuff out there
I couldn't get past the first 10 minutes of the first episode. But I did go back and give it another try. I fast forwarded to find good parts. I jumped around in the episodes. I was unsuccessful. The rants about men were uncalled for (I am a female, tyvm) and it seems the host is just a really unhappy person. Her voice... she needs some training on how to deliver long passages of text, since she is just reading from a script. I'm sorry to be blunt, but that's how people learn to be better.

Great stories, meh presentation
I love the content of this podcast. Interesting stories are often woven together across a broader episodic theme, and are clearly thoroughly researched. The host, however, doesn’t have the elocution or cadence for a formal presentation like this. In a more casual format her mispronunciations wouldn’t matter as much without the stilted reading. I’d also like to see music and research credits added to their website.

Well done, but very similar to Lore
If I hadn't already listened to Lore, I would give this podcast 5 stars. It is well-researched, well-written, interesting and enjoyable to listen to. Its a good podcast on its own merits, but it is basically Lore with a female host and a little bit of cursing. She covers many of the same stories (to be fair, there are only so many eerie historical stories to choose from that there is bound to be some overlap), her storytelling is taking on an increasingly Mahnke-ish cadence and even the background music is similar. I want to love this podcast because I love this genre, but I feel like I am listening to Lore 2.0. All that being said, I wil continue listening to this podcast as new episodes come out. Update: Please please please work on your pronunciation of foreign names and places. I had to stop listening to the Affair of the Poisons episodes because the pronunciations were obnoxiously terrible. I don’t speak French, but even I could tell the names were butchered badly. It is easy to find pronunciation guides on google. For all the research that goes into this podcast, you’d think proper pronunciation would be researched too.

The stories are retro and easy enough to get involved in, however the voice narration is fairly flat without any intriguing inflection (and even mispronounced a word. I think with some voice acting, coaching and practice, this could be a charming piece.

Incredibly well done, high quality content
I can’t believe how much work Alyson puts into this podcast. I’ve learned so much in the past couple weeks since discovering it. Should have been called evil men in fairy tales
I really appreciate this type of podcast. I love the mixture of history and fairytales. However, the author loves to remind us how bad men were and are even in the make believe world. More power to you. I can respect your passion and hatred of men. I am a man and an old fashioned feminist. I simply don’t like to hear about how bad men are and were even in make believe worlds. I gave this podcast 3 stars because it’s obvious she put a lot of work into it and she has a nice story telling voice. The anti man attitude just turned me off. To be honest I was only able to make it through the first two episodes so maybe things got a little better in later episodes.

Alyson has become one of my favorite podcasters. She tells history as if it were a story. She paints the picture of what is happening and I feel like I am watching movie. Mispronunciation abounds
I’m not looking for perfect French pronunciation, but just could not stand the mispronunciation of French names over and over again in L’affaire des Poisons episode. They weren’t pronounced as they should be in English or French, and it distracted from the content. I had to stop listening about halfway through.

It would be more interesting without the mini feminist rants every 5 minutes. In the middle of talking about queens of England there’s a rant on “cis white male patriachs’ displays of power”, and discussions on fairy tales have side snark about male theft of autonomy. Is this a feminist podcast or an unusual history one?

Could have been so good
I love the idea and the stories are really interesting, but it’s the narration I have trouble with. Alyson puts a lot of work into writing the stories, I can tell, but she is clearly reading off a page, and not speaking colloquially at all. She doesn’t have a flow and it’s not fun to listen to her struggle through the page she’s reading. Also she pronounced so many words and place names wrong that I started to get frustrated and had to turn it off. This bums me out because I really wanted to enjoy the great stories. Maybe she’ll get better at it and I can revisit. Until then I can’t recommend this show.

I love the spooky, well researched narrative that this podcast creates. I’ve heard some of these stories before but Alison masterfully connects them to wider themes and historical legacies. My only complaint is that I wish this podcast updated more regularly! Even once a month would be wonderful. It’s hard to remain engaged with a podcast that doesn’t have a consistent updating schedule because 1) we don’t know when to anticipate a new episode 2) if there are months in between each episode it’s easy to forget about the podcast

If You Like Lore Then You'll Love This Too!
Alyson Horrocks' production quality is excellent and her narrative style is unique and compelling. While some of her topics are ones I've heard covered on other podcasts her indepth coverage and storytelling style made it interesting to rehear these stories from her perspective, with me learning something new as well. While there are only 11 episodes so far they are all about an hour long making this easy to binge before you start getting weary of the genre and leaving you hoping, wishing, praying she'll release another episode soon. Ok Podcast
The concept is good. Sounds too much like reading from a script. Jokes and “witty” comments sounds too scripted like rest of show. Editing needs improvement. Good base of information could be great podcast but overall rough around the edges.

Found this by accident and LOVE it! Love the feminist side commentary, directness and the quick wit of the host and guests. Please do more! Always enjoy learning about the oddities of our past and especially found the Scheele’s Green/Arenic episode chock full of fascinating information I didn’t know before and I consider myself highly educated on things Strange and Unusual. :)

The podcast I've been waiting for.
The title says it all. As a strange and unusual being myself, I've been waiting for a macabre spooky podcast that doesn't take itself too seriously. Delivered in a relatable way with just the right balance of down to earth interjections and fanfare it's amazing. Thank you!

Dark Corners
There are a lot of podcasts out there about weird episodes in history, but this one really stands out. Even if you think you already know about the topics covered, you will be surprised. Alyson does a fantastic job in an unearthing new details and connections which often put these historical events in a very different light. Very well researched and produced. Please keep up the good work!

Sucked in from the beginning
I’ve only listened to two episodes so far (the most recent at this time and the first), but I can already tell this is going to become a favorite podcast. The subject matter is really interesting and the gist is engaging with a very conversational style while also providing a ton of information. And as someone who also still can’t look into a mirror in a darkened room (thanks Bloody Mary), I feel a connection to the host. Off to listen to the rest of the episodes and then to eagerly await new ones!

Alyson puts so much research into these episodes, and it really shows. Even if I had already heard a topic on a different podcast, she brings up a lot of details I hadn't heard before. She's a wonderful narrator, and pretty active on the podcast's social media pages which makes the wait between episodes much easier!

Enchanting
I'm very picky about what I listen to. Especially since I normally listen to audio books and podcasts while driving, the story or topic must catch my interest within the first 5 minutes. But if the voice doesn't have appeal, or doesn't match the topic, I've even pulled over on the freeway to delete and look for another to listen to. I really hate the radio, so if I turn that on while listening, it says a lot. That being said, Alyson has made this podcast my #1. Her voice is enchanting enough that whenever there's an episode I haven't listened to, I will literally interrupt any story I'm in the middle of to start and finish her episodes first.

"I myself am...strange and unusual."
When the opening episode of a podcast quotes Beetlejuice, you know you've found something special. Ms. Horrocks expertly spins tales of the macabre rooted in folklore, legend, pop culture and history into one of the most fascinating podcasts to date. A must-listen.

Stands out Among the Rest
As a murder/mystery/history/horror/etc/etc podcast obsessive, I'm constantly sampling new podcasts and listening to my old favorites. This podcast is a standout among many good ones, the storytelling here is what makes it a real gem. Every podcast feels like it takes the structure of telling a series of mini stories to lead to the listener along to the final overall narrative at the end. It's witty and funny, scary and full of interesting information. Something as well known at the story of Romeo and Juliet has life breathed back into it, just to give one example of how effective this podcast is in its storytelling. I just love this podcast and hope to see many more episodes.

Stories are Good
This podcast has a lot of potential. The stories are good. The diction of the speaker is sometimes very good, and other times, words are slurred together. Fine for native English speakers, very hard for someone whose language is not English. The main problem I am having is with Alyson beating us over the head with feminist theory or "enlightenment" ideas. We know that women are judged by a different standard, you don't have to point it out every time it comes up. It's obvious. We also know that one man's superstition might be another man's religion. Again, don't beat us over the head with it. Assume that your audience is as smart as you are, and the psycho-sexual-social-justice stuff is just as apparent to the listeners as it is to you. It makes the story lag and is distracting to hear you stopping the flow the make the point that "this is sexist" or that is "superstitious".. The stories have much more flavor if you leave those judgements to the reader. The topics are good, and I think with some work this could be a really good podcast. Also, the podcast is labelled "clean lyrics" in the iTunes store despite having a fair amount of swearing in it. Either change the label, or change the language. Either one is fine.

Great obscure and bizarre history!
The title might evoke the paranormal, and indeed the supernatural may occasionally rear its ethereal head, but this show offers far more to its listeners than cheap chills. These stories may be creepy or spooky, but more than that, they offer glimpses into fascinating passages of history, making broad connections across the ages. It is a vehicle for the host's deep research and great storytelling. If you like Lore or Pleasing Terrors or The Conspirators, you'll enjoy this show.

Extremely Well Put Together
I've been following Alyson on Instagram for over a year now and absolutely love her pictures. So whenever she announced her podcast, I was thrilled! I've listened to all 5 episodes and am extremely impressed by her organization and careful planning to make every episode very enjoyable to listen to. As a trained historian, I know the amount of work that goes into researching topics, especially of obscure (yet equally fascinating) nature, and it is evident that Alyson has put a lot of work into her research. If you love history or Halloween or anything spooky do yourself a favor and listen to this podcast!

- RE-RELEASE: A Haunting WinterTo end the year, please take a listen to Episode 18: A Haunting Winter, originally released on January 2, 2019. In this episode I explore the old tradition of telling ghost stories in the winter. The custom of telling winter’s tales is not known to most of us today, but it was custom that stretches back hundreds of years. And more often then not, these winter tales turned to horror. The popularity of these winter ghost tales peaked to an all time high during the Victorian era and became a celebrated Christmas tradition. And this entanglement of ghosts and Christmas, ultimately lead to a ghost story becoming the most enduring Christmas tale of all, Charles Dickens, ‘A Christmas Carol’, a story in which the ghosts of past, present, and future, change a man’s life for the better. Join The Strange and Unusual Podcast, as I explore the tradition of winter ghost stories and the reasons they meant to so much to our ancestors, and maybe ought to kept alive today. I decided to release this episode again because it's one of my personal favorites, and I am also taking extra time to put together new episodes I'm so excited to release in January and February, 2022. I'm so thankful for my listeners and I look forward to bringing you more strange and unusual stories in the new year!
