This podcast is a breath of fresh air in the realm of film criticism / appreciation content. Equal parts insightful, witty, respectful and heartfelt, and never overtly negative or film-snobby. The hosts have a deep knowledge and appreciation for their subject matter, and you can tell by their rapport and the flow of the show that they have a good time putting it all together. Good commentary. Good film recommendations. Good times.

Letterboxd 🤙🏻
I *love* the Letterboxd podcasts! Love Gemma’s accent, the wild opinions, the celebrity guests with their four faves. I’ve added so many movies to my watchlist, learned how to shuffle so I can start actually watching my watchlist in 2023, and just love the conversations and the dynamics between all the hosts. They’re hilarious but my favorite thing is the lack of pretension. If you love movies, you definitely need to listen in.

A Pure Delight
Both The Letterboxd Show podcasts (Four Favorites original and Weekend Watchlist) are so much fun to listen to! The main show, hosted by Gemma and Slim, allows its guests to have fascinating conversations about films they are passionate about. Gemma and Slim have such a great rapport with each other and always seem to be having fun with whomever the guest is. I have learned about a bunch of fascinating voices on film through this podcast! Weekend Watchlist has also become a vital listen for me every week. Slim, Mitchell and Mia succinctly and joyously talk about the upcoming week’s new releases. The real highlight though is the Watchlist Shuffle segment, where the hosts shuffle their watchlists to find a movie to watch before the next show and talk about their previous shuffle pick. It provides a great opportunity to learn about films I had never heard of and they highlight listeners who do the same. An absolute blast of a feed and a must listen for film lovers everywhere!

A Great Expansion of Letterboxd Itself
A breezy, enjoyable, and informative listen, The Letterboxd Show does so many things right! It has a great pair of regular hosts and a rotation of guests who are given the spotlight each week. It has a format we can rely on week after week, and that format (primarily a focused discussion on the four favorite movies of the guest) brings inherent variety. It has a great balance of passion and humility. We know why these speakers love the movies they love, and we are given honest moments of humility, like when the hosts admit that they simply didn’t fully connect with Fellini’s 8 1/2. (I am similarly “flawed,” so I particularly appreciated this!) The hosts don’t rely on memory; they rewatch (or give a first-time watch) to the favorites of the guests, which not only shows great respect to the guest but great respect to the movies themselves. They do a great job with the actual formatting of the podcasts, having chapter titles and chapter-specific images, as well as complete sets of links to all movies discussed. Finally, they honor Letterboxd itself by reading quotes from member reviews and sharing interesting stats gleaned from the site. (In addition to the “four favorites” episodes, they also have a “weekend watchlist” episode that does a good job of mentioning the obvious wide releases but has also brought to my attention a couple of hidden gems. Great stuff, keep it up!

Back to Only One Show? I Hope Not
How dare Letterboxd try to give us a varied way to listen to thoughts and opinions on movies, and let us know about new releases. The nerve of giving us not only one, but two weekly quality shows.

1/3 of a good podcast about movies
I’ve loved getting Gemma’s mix of humor, knowledge and amazement, but adding other hosts into the feed has brought down the overall quality.

Letterboxd for your ears
Part film, part psychoanalysis, the Letterboxd Show, brings a wide range of guests who share childhood stories, fond memories of first time watches and meaningful recollecting around the 4 most memorable movies in their lives. Hosted by In the cut advocate ~ Gemma and Don't believe the hype ~ Slim, each episode showcases insiders, and regulars as they together approach every angle of the movie making and movie watching experience. Definitely come for the movies but stay for the fun, and those infinite lists. ♡ @blurco My top four are Happiness (1998), The Doom Generation (1995), Little Children (2006) and Irreversible (2002).

I am loving this podcast. Smart, tasteful, playful conversations with some solid guest appearances. It’s a great companion to the Letterboxd website, it’s users, and it’s new editorial section on the site. You will find yourself adding a good handful of movies to your watchlist after each episode.

- 'In the Cut' 20th Anniversary Special with Jane CampionOscar-winning filmmaker Jane Campion joins The Letterboxd Show for a very special episode, marking the 20th anniversary of one of Gemma Gracewood’s Four Favorites: In the Cut (2003). Campion’s erotic thriller stars height-of-her-fame box office darling Meg Ryan and pre-Hulk, pre- 13 Going on 30 Mark Ruffalo as a literary professor and a detective, respectively, who dive headlong into a red-hot sexual romance, while a serial killer is on the loose in New York City. In the Cut received an infamous CinemaScore ‘F’ grade on release, with many major critics panning the film. But the Letterboxd average rating has only grown over the years as the misunderstood noir masterpiece finds its audience at last. Now, with a new uncut director’s cut Blu-ray on the market, Gemma reads Campion some thirsty Letterboxd reviews and gets the goods from Jane about her favorite sex scenes, intimacy coordination, earning trust with actors, what it really means to win an Oscar, and why the structures of filmmaking need to change. Credits: Recorded in New Zealand. Edited by Slim. Editorial producer: Brian Formo. Production manager: Sophie Shin. Special thanks to Stuart McKenzie. - Four Favorites with David Ehrlich: Letterboxd popularity, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the meaning of lifeYou don’t get to over 125,000 Letterboxd followers without making a few enemies… unless you’re David Ehrlich! IndieWire’s chief film critic joins Slim and Mitchell to discuss mortality across existential masterpieces and Apatow-produced rom-coms. As we make our way through his four favorite films ( Ikiru , Forgetting Sarah Marshall , Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters , Titanic ) we hit a range of topics including: the pressure of David’s yearly video countdowns, how the canon has changed in “the age of Letterboxd”, stealing your mom’s credit card to buy movies, finding meaning in small and invisible acts, Forgetting Sarah Marshall ’s controversial marketing campaign and how it’s more quotable than Casablanca, Paul Schrader’s hot dog stains, Mishima as “the most Schrader” movie, David’s alleged personal connection to Titanic and the meditative quality of the DVD menu. PLUS: Find out which of David’s children is his favorite! - ‘Down with Love’ 20th Anniversary Special with Peyton ReedIn this very special episode of The Letterboxd Show, we ditch the watchlists and awards shows to talk to filmmaker Peyton Reed about directing one of Mia Lee Vicino’s Four Favorites: Down with Love (2003). That’s right; it’s the 20th anniversary of this Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor-starring ode to the Doris Day-Rock Hudson sex comedies of yore, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Lover Come Back (1961). Mia and Peyton chatted about the difference between Barbie and Barbara Novak shades of pink, which classic romances inspired screenwriters Eve Ahlert and Dennis Drake, the origin of that grand finale musical number and the belated cultural embrace of this misunderstood feminist masterpiece. Even if you haven’t seen it, if we did our jobs right, maybe you’ll end up adding it to your own watchlist. Cheers, here’s to twenty years of Down with Love! Credits: Recorded in Los Angeles. We also praise film school nerds, discuss consent among movie characters, Ariela’s mom’s and sister’s important roles in her film education, remembers watching Blade Runner on a teenage date, and unpacks Pipeline director Daniel Goldhaber ’s Letterboxd addiction: “He sends us reviews daily, we had to beg him to stop!” And! - Best in Show: Season One Finale Mailbag Extravaganza + SXSW AwardsSlim the mailman joins us in a bumper episode as Mia, Brian and Gemma answer listeners’ questions about awards season, from the Oscar category we’d like to see added to whether nominees are paid for all their campaigning to when genre films will have their day. We check in on both the 2023 SXSW Film Festival and Asian Film Award winners, and look back at how the Letterboxd buzz out of Everything Everywhere All at Once ’s world premiere predicted the film’s eventual Oscar wins. Please participate in The Letterboxd Show Feedback Survey! We also give Willem Dafoe a (heavy!) most-watched trophy and reveal the winner of the award for Biggest Letterboxd Oscars Bump (spoiler: people are watching women talking!). Then Jack’s Facts and Sophie Shin join us for the official Best in Show wrap party, and where we share the films that captured our hearts this season. - Best in Show goes to the Oscars! And Everything Everywhere All at Once Sweeps!Someone let us go to the Oscars! Mia and Gemma were in the press room at the 95th Academy Awards. They witnessed history as Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian woman to win Best Actress and Mia got to pop a question to the reigning queen herself! Brian watched from home and highlights a few speeches and the theory of an ensemble cast hug that was required this year. Plus we chat the “hot editor” and the lack of Elvis wins. We are also joined by Letterboxd friend and Senior Vice President of The Black List, Kate Hagen to dish the goss from backstage — including gripping hands for Women Talking and getting to hear “ Goonies for life!” from a forever Goonie, Ke Huy Quan. Slim and Jack’s Fact’s give us some Letterboxd data updates and we almost make it an entire episode without mentioning how Hugh Grant described himself as a “scrotum” on the Oscar stage. - Best in Show: Indie Spirit Awards, The Quiet Girl, Paul Mescal, and Movie SpoofsHello, Best in Show listener Paul Mescal! It smells like Indie Spirit (and bourbon) in here! Weekend Watchlist’s Slim joins Mia, Gemma, and Brian for an in-person debrief of all things Film Independent Spirit Awards. We were on the blue carpet, in the press room and inside the big tent on Santa Monica beach for all the wins. Slim reveals a fear of rollerbladers and spin classes on the sand, Mia meets her biggest fan (producer of the Filipino comedy Leonor Will Never Die), and everyone (and we mean everyone) gushes about Aftersun’s lead. Gemma chats with Colm Bairéad, the writer-director of her much-loved The Quiet Girl, while Mia zooms with the movie’s star, Catherine Clinch as we look at the Best International Feature Oscar category (where The Quiet Girl has made history as the first in the Irish language to be nominated). And after Slim and Mia had their first glimpse of a big award show, we spend the afterparty talking about our favorite movie scenes at award ceremonies, which takes a surprising turn into spoof flicks. All, this plus the last of the craft guild winners, including a last-second, history-making win from the American Society of Cinematographers. Chapters: (00:00:00) Openings credits (00:03:18) Film Independent Spirit Awards (00:33:44) Colm Bairéad interview (00:57:32) Catherine Clinch interview (01:02:27) Afterparty Sponsor: This episode is brought to you by MUBI, a curated streaming service dedicated to elevating great cinema from around the globe. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio directors del Toro and Mark Gustafson dive deep into what its like to work with each other, which stop motion animators they’d jump in front of the bus for and whether Cate Blanchett sneaked a bit of Lydia Tár into Spazzatura. Indie Spirit-nominated actor Trevante Rhodes and writer-director Miles Warren drop by for a chat about role models, getting an award from Elijah Wood and their film Bruiser, which is now streaming on Hulu. Plus, our love for Jenny Slate, who we want to hug at the Indie Spirits, a shout out to awards clip editors everywhere, and a celebration of the fresh-faced cinephiles on the awards circuit this season.
