Refreshing
Just started listening to this podcast after having saved it months ago. Treasure Island was great! I always enjoyed the book and the old movie. BJ did a phenomenal job making the characters come to life in my mind’s eye. Thank you!

I am listening to the Treasure Island podcast and am thoroughly enjoying it. The narrator is excellent. The story is captivating to begin with and the narrator brings it to life. Thank you for this.

Wonderful Treasure Island
I enjoy every single podcast, but i needed to say how wonderful it was to hear a great reading of Treasure Island, a book I haven't read in ages. Thanks!

Great Readers All!
I really appreciate the time y’all put into your work here. Of course after learning that you censored yourselves over the book: Armageddon 2419 with Buck Rodgers I just had to give it a listen and see just what all the fuss was about. (It’s Very prescient by the way) I guess a reading of Huckleberry Finn is Verbotton? Thanks for all your work!!

Something
I love the stories but couldn’t care less about your “personal life.” People don’t come to this podcast for that. Start another podcast if you feel it is necessary. Also, there is no need to apologize for these great works of art by authors who more important than you. PLUS, their writing gives us glimpses of history that some can learn from. You insult people’s intelligence when you feel you have to in your condescending manner. But as I said before, the stories are great and you do a very good job with THAT part. Get rid of the 3-4 “jerk” mi Ute’s at the beginning.

Wonderful podcast
I’ve been listening since the first episode. Not every episode is my favorite but I’m generally very pleased with the product.I enjoy the personal stories and I feel like I’ve gotten to know BJ over the years. I’m appalled at the nasty review someone gave a few weeks ago and all I can say is if you’re that miserable to put a review of that nature on this site, I’m really sorry for you. This is a phenomenal free podcast and if for some reason that doesn’t float your boat you should probably just keep it to yourself

Long Time Listener
I have enjoyed your podcast for well over a decade and have love every minute. I have listened on so many podcast players, apps, devices over the years. I have left so many positive reviews over the years. Now after an accident nearly thirty years ago I have been placed on disability and it has not been good. I struggle with pain and depression and take medication daily. The depression is sometimes worse than the pain. But I continue to listen to you and it brings me some joy and happiness listening to all those wonderful stories. Even your personal stories about your family and your activities with school I find interesting. It gives me some positive things to think about.

Exceptional Narration
First I must admit that I like the personal stories and was poking around trying to figure out why they ceased. I’m guessing the host took the criticisms to heart and eliminated them. That’s too bad. I thought it was a nice touch. I was happy to contribute to his son’s student residency recently. Secondly, I think BJ Harrison is a gifted voice actor who brings books and short stories alive. He’s got an arsenal of voices and accents which are top notch. Classic Tales is a go to for me.

Host is annoying
The show is interesting. The introductory drooling about his personal life of the host is so annoying as to make this podcast un-listenable. I don’t care about his GodZilla wife or annoying children. Just play the stories and talk ‘a lot’ less. A lot, lot less. And I especially don’t care about your left-wing political views. Update - And the speaker is getting worse. Now he starts each episode begging for money for his various causes. If you don’t have enough money, then get a job. No one wants to hear your groveling.

Professional podcast
BJ Harrison is a pro at what he does. Some of the stories are just ok, but when he gets his hands on a really good story he can have you on the edge of your seat and waiting impatiently for the next chapter to be released.

Some books are better when you can hear them
Since the podcast began, BJ Harrison has been a good storyteller and narrator — and I think in the past couple of years he has risen to another level. He is truly at the top of the narration game (if there is such a thing). Voice, pacing, emotion — he’s got it down. Some books that I have had to plod through as a reader are completely enjoyable when he reads them for me. Gatsby is a good example — I couldn’t get to the end of that book without skipping over chunks of text, so I missed some plot points. Hearing it was a completely different story. Likewise “The Great God Pan.” I’ve never made my way to the end of that story as a reader — it is heavy lifting for someone who naturally skims and reads things fast. But hearing him tell it, it is a great story. This is an older one, but if you get a chance to hear him read “The Happy Prince” by Oscar Wilde (It’s in the archives somewhere), you are in for a treat.

No personal moments please
These are the worst part of this podcast. if I choose one of the stories I have to skip ahead to avoid this. If people really want to hear about your life maybe make separate entries. I must miss the PC narratives, so I guess that is another reason to skip the intro. I don’t listen to all the choices but enjoy one every so often…but please consider reducing the opening, it is sort of cringe.

Wonderful cray let’s fiction
Excellent quality of production with a wide variety of content to keep you interested. It tends toward the macabre from time to time, especially in the fall around Halloween, but if you want to get a wide look at literature in audio format, it’s hard to beat.

I used to listen to this podcast all the time, til BJ Harrison started apologizing for words written hundreds of years or even decades ago. We all understand the world was different and views have changed. No need to “prepare” and warn us that we might hear something disagreeable.

Favorite Narrator Award
BJ Harrison is my favorite audiobook narrator. Best voices, accents, and thoughtful, powerful performances. Love the classic novels I am finally able to talk about having now actually read [listened to] them in their entirety — because of this podcast. Titles I’ve enjoyed the most include The Great Gatsby, Bambi, The Importance of Being Earnest, & more! I have also purchased a number of audiobooks by BJ Harrison because he’s just that spectacular! Favorite purchases include Treasure Island and Anthem.

Disappointed at people’s dislike of the personal touch
Love listening to these classic books but what makes BJ stand out is his insights into his and his family’s life. Those “personal moments” take only a few minutes and made me smile. People that don’t want that bit can FF a few minutes - now I have to go elsewhere to find them - please put them back on the front of the podcast

Wonderful stories, brilliantly read
The stories are, of course, classic and there's a great variety But the narration is what makes them compelling. I've unsubscribed to a number of "stories" podcasts where the narration was stilted or unconvincing. BJ Harrison's stories are rich and lively, with wonderful accents. This is one of my go-to podcasts for when I'm out walking the dog. But I always fast-forward through the first 3-4 minutes, his "Personal Minute," where he extensively details his family's activities that week.

Cave to the woke
I have been a long time listener and financial supporter of this show. I love the talent that B J brings to the table. I could listen to this guy read the phone book. Having said that I’m wicked disappointed that he has given into the book burring woke mob. I was listing to the last episode and after one review of some one getting offended at the term “yellow people” referencing the Hong dynasty. Don’t take these “classic” books out of context. These people are looking for a reading to be offended and BJ caved. I’m out so is my money

An offensive approach to offensive behavior.
I’ve gotten used to skipping to the 3 minute mark to avoid all the blather. Recently, however, it became apparent the narrator believes we are too stupid to dis-associate the quasi racists epitaphs of a story created in the 1920’s with modern sensibilities. In the fictional Buck Rogers story the enemy is the Chinese and they use terms like ‘yellow’ to describe them. One of the fun things about old science fiction is how incredibly wrong it is. I truly enjoyed listening to part one and reflecting on things like WWII, nuclear power, and geo politics of the last century. I will NOT be listening to any more parts to this story because there won’t be any. After all, isn’t the best way to fight against racism (China isn’t a race) is to ignore all references and pretend it doesn’t exist? I’ll tune in every once in a while to see if there is anything interesting but I fear I’m too ignorant to continue listening each week and purchasing the merchandise.

Like a good friend
I love literature, but as a busy working landscaper parent, look to work as my reading time. This podcast has been in my pocket for many years providing me entertainment and enlightenment as I get through the day. I’m so thankful for the thoughtfully chosen titles and excellent narration. BJ is always working to improve his craft, from commentary on how these some of these old works can relate to our time, to correct French pronunciation- a challenge! Thank you for all the hard work, BJ. You choose just what I like to read, and I appreciate the treasure trove of titles on the website to fill the in gaps.

Confused
The politically correct commentary on the stories got tiresome - especially when it’s completely off base. The self-aggrandizement and personal sharing got tiresome. It’s too bad, because the selection of stories was very good. To be a good reader/narrator one needs to melt into the background, let the great literature speak for itself, and JUST READ THE STORY. Unsubscribed.

Where BJ shines is especially apparent in Wodehouse stories. If I were reading the story the humor would not be as evident. The way the host/narrator interprets and develops characters brings out the humor. Frustrating to have to wait a week. Thanks for the positive experience!

I have been a big fan of this podcast for many years. Through it, I have been introduced to much literature that I never would have read on my own. Incredible.
I am writing this after finishing the 12th and final episode of Scaramouche. I have been following this podcast for a while, and have enjoyed it thoroughly, BJ is sooo talented. But his rendition of Scaramouche, in my opinion, was INCREDIBLE, maybe the best work I’ve listened to. The combination of Raphael Sabatini’s exquisite writing and BJ’s amazing narration of it made for 12 hours of entertaining, riveting, and mesmerizing storytelling, especially the conclusion (Part 11 and 12). Go listen to the series. It’s worth your time. I literally looked forward to every Friday over these past 12 weeks waiting for the each part’s release.

An Internet Refuge
I’ve been listening since the very first episode. All the back to when BJ was flogging pickles and fudge trying to make ends meet. And through all that time he has great ratings. Not just for the stories. He has always cultivated an intimate, very personal relationship with his listeners. It makes listening more fun because you feel like you know the reader as a person. And he’s a really decent person. I never bought the fudge or the pickles. But I have supported the podcast off and on in various ways. And encourage you to do the same. -Ford

A podcast like no other
There’s nothing like this wonderfully entertaining podcast anywhere. I’m a huge fan of public domain audiobooks (looking fondly at you, LibriVox) and I am finicky about the quality of reading/narration. BJ does a marvelous job of reading with proper pace, great diction, and distinctive voices for the characters so that you can discern who is “speaking.” I wasn’t instantly hooked by the first installment of The Four Just Men, but I am ***so*** glad I stuck with it. It’s a totally compelling story!!! BJ — Thanks for the great work you do in choosing and telling these fabulous stories!!

Top Shelf Voice Acting!
Really draws your listeners into the story. We can visualize the individual characters based on their voice, which transports is right into the scene. The personal moment a couple weeks back about the speakeasy was in.gen.ious!! You love theater and teaching, I’m wondering if you might call that section “Set the Scene” and keep focusing on tips about prop making or the latest theater entertainment you all organized and how you did it.

Always awaiting the next episode
Enjoy this podcast immensely and have been a listener for years! Similar podcasts are usually poorly executed or the narrator's voice is irritating or BOTH. I am always anxiously awaiting the next episode, and if it is a genre or subject matter that doesn't interest me, there's always next week. Recently however, there have been many installments of one work, which leaves me out for weeks or even months at a time. Again, this week, a nine part mystery! See you in December...

Fascinating stories, professionally read.
B.J. Harrison and his almost comically mellifluous voice do justice aplenty to the classics, but I love this podcast even more for the rarer, more obscure gems it digs up from great authors. Harrison has a real knack for unearthing fun, entertaining short stories and novels that lie outside the better-known avenues of the literary canon. From science fiction to horror to mystery and romance, Harrison runs the gamut, and if you don’t like the current work, you only need to wait a few weeks to find something that will likely suit your fancy. And Harrison has a delightful habit of making his selections seasonally apt: thrilling adventures in summer blockbuster season, eerie tales around Halloween, etc. If you enjoy audiobooks, this is an essential subscription.

I’ve been listening to BJ Harrison for over 10 years now, and he remains my one of favorite narrators. His characters and clear and distinct, and he balances theatricality and subtlety with panache. Love it!
I love the stories with twists at the end, classics I'd never heard of before (but I'm now a huge PG Woodhouse fan!), and his perfect for radio voice. I prefer the tales that fit into one episode, but have enjoyed some of the longer books he has read as well. I would have never read "Pride and Prejudice" on my own but ended up loving it when I heard it here first. Thanks for sharing your love of literature with us!

Premium Quality Audiobooks
I’ve been listening to The Classic Tales for over a decade now. The weekly free dose is remarkably good. For a mere $5 a month, I became a financial supporter several years back. I listen to audiobooks from various free and paid sources. Whether free or not, the narrator can vary considerably in both accuracy and inflection. BJ always seems to have everything just right. I feel that he thoroughly prepared for each project, and delivers a result that is nothing short of perfect. For $5 a month, you get a 3-4 hour portion of a new audiobook. You also get $8 in store credit. Many titles are right around $10. You’d be hard pressed to find professional quality audiobooks at such low prices with a very low monthly commitment. BJ also provides top notch customer service. Try the free weekly episode and you’ll be sure to want more. Fortunately he never seems to stop putting out more new material. If you’re a fan of audiobooks, you owe it to yourself to give him a listen.

I'm a long time listener & every time I listen to this podcast I'm amazed at how well BJ Harrison voices the stories. The stories he selects are wonderful - my personal favorites being Pride & Prejudice, The Velveteen Rabbit, & anything from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Thank you, BJ, for providing your listeners with such quality work.

What's the story, B.J.?
Since stumbling on the Classic Tales Podcast, I look forward every Friday to what narrator B.J. Harrison puts out next. He has a good blend of tales from action (like 'Tarzan') to horror (like Lovecraft) to feel-good stories (like Wodehouse). I've also been introduced to several authors I've never heard of through his reading. If you enjoy classic literature and want a good voice to read you those tales, you can't beat the stripped down goodness to the Classic Tales Podcast!

Mostly Good...
...but... As Brit I find his attempt at a British accent cringe worthy! And I'm not sure why he does it? He has a very pleasant voice! Let's agree - if I don't attempt an American accent, can BJ just read the stories in his normal voice? Otherwise, apart from one or two mispronunciations, I really enjoy this podcast. I listen to them on my commute and find them very engaging.

You can go back
Remember all those books we should have read in High School and College but never did? Well now you can download these weekly podcasts and listen whenever. I am blown away each week by this talented reader/actor. It is remarkable how he is able to portray so many different character voices each week. All the stories I've heard in these past years that I've never read but should have. Being now so into this "new" literature I can no longer wait each week and in between podcasts I've downloaded audiobooks from his website. A great experience at whatever age you start.

B.J. Harrison should be a part of Everything!
Not only does the selection of works read on this podcast have a excellent range of styles and a great representation of hidden gems, but the perfect voice filling them. B.J. Harrison is dynamic and soothing at the same time; it's like having you dad, grandfather, or favorite uncle read you exciting picks from the library when you were a kid. He shouldn't just be the voice on every audiobook, but his voice should be worked into every movie and t.v. show. After all, Morgan Freeman can't narrate everything, can he?

I bought one of the Season Bundles and I can't tell you how much I enjoy these. My wife and I just finished The Tell Tale Heart and now she's hooked. I remember hearing this story told to me by my Father as a young lad and occasionally around a campfire, hearing it told by BJ Harrison gives a whole new perspective of this tale. Thanks BJ, your time and talent is having a very positive impact on me. It's funny, out of all the money I've spent over the years on books and entertainment, this is the best money I've spent yet! BJ Harrison is living his dream...his love of classical books....classical books to bring to the public. So artfully read by him as no other can read. Mr. Harrison plays each part so very well that I forget it is him reading and am transported into the character in each novel. If it had not been for his devotion to this cause, his cause, I would have missed out so many wonderful classic novels. I think one of my favorites is about the butler, Jeeves; always tending to his spoiled, rich but decent boss......it's wonderful and I just love how BJH portrays Jeeves...Kudos, Bravo! I Want To Like It But...
I really want to like this podcast, I do. Mike's voice has a good sound and his readings are quite good. He does characters well and portrays the emotions splendidly. He also choose pretty good stories. Here's the but, I can't stand any of the random junk he discusses at the beginning of each episode. I don't care that he's still writing a book, a fact he flaunts for several minute each show. I don't care what's in his fridge, a segment he draws out for an excruciating amount of time. And I don't care about any of the other characters he makes up to talk to. All the beginning chatter goes on so long (last episode I listened to it lasted 15 minutes, I believe it was longer than the story) that it's excruciating. I have to skip past it every time just so I don't get too frustrated with the show, but it's hard bc you never know how long his rambling will last. So overall, good stories but Mike is pretty annoying as a podcaster.

Consistently disappointing
I used to listen to the Classic Tales Podcast--it was free and most of the story selections were excellent, I told myself, so who cares if the reader is incapable of doing accents or if he occasionally mispronounces his words? Who cares if his accent for Poirot and his accent for Dr. Bauerstein are indistinguishable? Who cares if he's incapable of pronouncing any word of non-English extraction incorrectly? It's not as though he's a professional, or that I'm paying him. Ah, but BJ Harrison has pretensions, dear reader. He thinks he is *good.* He smugly proclaims that he will make you a better person by reading these classic stories to you--in spite of not really knowing how to read them. Or being unable to make a difference between an "old" story and a "good" story. You should listen to him--in fact, you should listen to him natter incessantly on about how you should pay him, before and after each story. And buy caramel sauce. Dear reader, I am not averse to paying for professional audiobooks or subsidising the work of beloved podcasts that offer quality readings, but as an English major, as someone who has read many of the stories that Mr. Harrison reads, please do not be fooled. This is not a professional reader. It is a skilled amateur whose skills are good but not great, amusing but not admirable. One short listen to his Speedy Gonzalez-like accents for the Zorro episode will convince you of this. Eventually, the preponderance of errors, of ingnorance, and of interminable self-advertising drove me away from this podcast.

Agree with Tess McK Somewhat
The selection of stories is exquisite, but the affectation of BJ Harrison is distracting and overly theatrical. There is a pointed difference between literature designed to be performed in front of an audience (plays, monologues, some poetry) and literature designed to be read in a relatively straightforward, solitary manner. I admire Harrison's goals and initiative (how many podcasts are dedicated to classic stories?), but the affected performance of each tale emphasizes the reader, not the work. I came to the podcast for the stories, (I apologize for my bluntness here Harrison) not the performer.

BJ Harrison is Exceptional.
His voice is nothing less of mesmerizing which goes hand in hand with his exceptional choices of literature that he reads...or a better term, performs. From classics like The Scarlet Pimpernel( which happens to be one of my favorite books) to the masterpieces of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. We listeners are blessed and somewhat spoiled( in a good way) to have should this man exhibit his talent. I assure you these will not be a waste of your time. Happy Listening!

Stumbled across...and I'm glad I did
A year or so ago, I stumbled across the Classic Tales Podcast. I subscribed and downloaded a few episodes for a road trip. I absolutely loved what I heard. B.J. does a great job of narrating and producing a varied selection of classic literature ranging from well-known and popular to the obscure and forgotten. While I'll agree with those who point out various "flaws" or "shortcomings", I will also comment that this podcast is given to us FREE of charge. B.J. and his team/friends do a stunning job bringing great selections to us. I'm willing to forgive the occasional mispronunciation or editing mishap. Furthermore, the passion and personality that B.J. brings more than makes up for the "semi-professional" nature of the podcast (rather than the polished "professionalism" of a 'random house' or other big publishing house). While there have been some stories I didn't particularly love, there have been tons that I thoroughly enjoyed. These wonderful tales have brightened morning and evening commutes as well as long dreary stretches of nothingness on long drives. Thanks so much B.J. Keep up the great work!

I like it
What I like about reviews is that they are just people’s opinions, whether you agree or not... I read the reviews that did not like this podcast and found that most did not care for Mr. Harrison's accent... ok.... maybe it is not the best but what do I know? Can I tell where the character comes from by Mr. Harrison's voice when he gives voice to the characters...? Yes, and to me that is what counts. If he were to read a character who is obviously English like Holms and he read it in his normal voice...would not people criticize him for Americanizing the great Sherlock Holms? Opinions are like noses…everyone has one.

LOVE IT!!!!
As a high school English teacher, I just love this podcast. I have an hour commute to work and the stories keep me awake and alert while I am driving. I wish I could read with my students the way Mr. Harrison does - he gets into the characters and it's like I'm there in the tale. Even as a teacher I haven't read everything out there and I am constantly exposed to new stories by either authors I love or authors I can't stand. I am surprised that sometimes I simply love a story by an author that I thought I didn't like (Mark Twain, for example). Keep up the great work!!

Great Podcast! My Favorite!
Mr. Harrison has a spectacular talent. The stories come to life when he reads them. I love classic literature, but I am not able to find the time to read, so I listen to this podcast at work. There have been several times where I was disappointed that it was quitting time because I would have to wait until the next day to find out what happens. Thank you, Mr. Harrison, for sharing your gift with us! Oh, I wanted to say one more thing about his "accent". He does not have one that I can pick out. In fact, I believe for most of his characters, he simply speaks with a non-regional accent and uses proper grammar. I guess that is why the few people leaving bad comments are confused. It isn't an accent, it is proper grammar and diction.

I gave this podcast a shot, but I honestly did not have high hopes. Boy was I surprised! The reader's voice is excellent -- very pleasant to listen to, and differentiate characters without being over-the-top. I would never have expected Frankenstein to be an enjoyable audiobook, or that the book was so different than the movies. Thanks for a great podcast, for all your work in recording these, and especially for allowing me to enjoy a classic book that I never would have picked off the shelf.

Fabulous, what more can be said.
BJ Harrisons's reading of these classic novels and short stories brings them to life like few others. I am currently listening to Frankenstein and his vocalizing of the long monologue of the creature is captivating. The subtle slurring of its speech, but the underlying nobility speech makes me long for the time in the car when I can listen to the podcast.

Absolutely stellar work from B.J. Harrison. A voice that's easy on the ears, and tales that are timeless. I usually find audio spoken word unbearable, but Mr. Harrison makes it a joy!

B.J. continues to do a great job. I'd like to hear his rendition of Robert Heinlein's Glory Road or Pat Frank's post-apocalyptic Alas, Babylon. I'd also like to see the entire collection archived on iTunes. I've recommended him to others, and it would be nice if they had a pick of the best gone by.

Not the Best
I downloaded this podcast recently for a long car trip and felt encouraged by the overwhelmingly positive reviews. I am a great fan of classic literature (I'm a college English instructor) and love being read to. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. The reading/performance is very affected, and the reader seems at great pains to make his voice and characterizations the central focus, rather than the stories themselves. One need only listen to one or two episodes of PRI's selected shorts to hear the difference between a brilliant reading and this scene chewing 'performance' of great literature. Stephen Crane's wonderful "Blue Hotel" was just awful, and almost completely unrecognizable. Crane's subtle style, dialogue, & wit was utterly lost in this over the top reading. What's more, almost every reading begins with a longwinded advertisement for other 'for sale' podcasts. Great literature speaks for itself; any adequate reading should put the language center stage, not the reader.

Fantastic audio quality, great acting!
I've been listening to The Classic Tales podcast since it first began. I can't say enough good things about it! B.J. Harrison's voice work is excellent, giving distinct life to multiple characters with consistency, excitement and flair. This podcast has opened my world to wonderful works of literature that I honestly would never have read on my own. I listen to Mr. Harrison's work each week as I drive long distances to visit clients. I have purchased each of the audiobooks he's offered through the site as well, with Tarzan being my hands-down favorite. I encourage you to subscribe to the free podcast and to support this wonderful endeavor by purchasing the books and donating during the fund drives.

Good effort
Good effort by a man on a laudable mission to bring the classics to the masses. It's free and I couldn't read better than him,so I do respect him. I have to say his style needs quite a bit of polishing, though. I think a professional teacher could give him some good tips on pacing and pausing and inflection etc....And he needs to trust the text more and not think it needs as much help as he is trying to give it.

Horrendous Narration
I love audio books and the classics, so I applaud this effort. However, the narration is forced to sound dramatic, badly timed and always distracting if not totally annoying. He sounds like an American talking through his nose to do a mock imitation of a pompous Brit. I wish he'd stick with a natural voice or get some coaching.

Of all the pocasts I've discovered in the last few years, this is the absolute best. As narrators go, BJ is one of the best I've ever heard. Affected Performance Interferes with Wonderful Literature
These would be just fine if the guy would use his normal speaking voice. He's usually OK when he's doing character voices, but when he reads as the narrator or in the "pre-show" he just sounds annoyingly silly. It comes off as very, very "high school drama class." Just read, B.J. Take a listen to "Selected Shorts" readers. You'll hear the difference.

Polarized Opinions
I've just spent some time reading through the posted reviews of BJ's podcast, and while the vast majority of reviewers enjoy it very much, a small number of them are quite annoyed by BJ's voice, accents, enthusiasm, etc. I've been listening to this podcast regularly since episode one and absolutely love it. I've listened to his other works and will continue to do so. I prefer the stories that lighter stories from this podcast (Jeeves, etc.). I find the production values to be first rate and BJ has a high standard of quality to his narration. I will continue to listen and recommend The Classic Tales Podcast to others. I believe BJ could have a bright future narrating audiobooks professionally and I for one, would listen.

Such a gift!
I am so appreciative to BJ Harrison for this podcast. I love knowing that I can relax with my earbuds in and just go wherever his voice takes me. Good variety of stories from many genres. To those who think his accent is fake or forced; I've been accused many times of having a fake brittish accent like Madonna but it's not an intentional affectation. It's just the wierd way that I talk. Can't help it. Give the guy a break.

Very Professional
I was looking for a podcast about reading and made by professionals (male voice since apparently there's been a bias in gender narrators). This one is an excellent one. Mr. Harrison provides with his proffesionalism when adapting his excellent voice and style to the topic he reads. There's is passion in the work and his natural voice (never over acted neither fake) release the book with a high quality performance. Mr. Harrison is doing a great job here (maybe beyond what he thinks).

What a fun way to relearn (or learn) the classics
B.J. Harrison presents a wondefully wide variety of tales and short stories. He is a superb reader who does a fabulous job with voicing different characters. I hope he is able to earn a living off of his clear and wonderful talents. He is better than Scott Brick (who read - and makes less enjoyable) many commercially produced audiobooks. I like B.J.'s idea of running this site as an "N.P.R." like subscription and although I missed his September fund drive, I absolutely wish to and will make a donation to his wondeful work. So Mr. Harrison - Keep it up, please!

Keep 'em coming, B.J.
I've read with interest the reviews of The Classic Tales podcast. While there is some affectation of B.J.'s speech, I'm enjoying hearing stories I've read and others that I've never read (but probably should have). I make my living as an announcer and voice-over/on-camera person and I have a VERY good understanding of what it takes to produce this kind of content. The fact that it's FREE for all of us makes listening to it while I'm on the road or at night in my bedroom a pleasure and makes any vocal affectation unnoticeable. Thanks, B.J. You're doing good stuff! Keep it up. Rob P.S.: I've made a donation, too.

Affectation and romance
I have to agree with those who have complained about Mr. Harrison's Affected accent (to the reviewer that wrote a rebuttal, the word is affected, not effected). It's too bad, because there is a lack of free audio literature on the web, and the selections are good (although I believe the podcast is misleading; they are classics predominantly of the horror/crime/mystery/suspense genres.) The phoniness of accent was most evident in The Hound of the Baskervilles as Sherlock Holmes, it made me despise Holmes. This is not a true British accent, nor is it a New England downeaster, nor an American southern colonial; it's an accent that needs a few months with both an acting and a dialect coach. It's just trying too hard. Yes, these are tales about people who lived a long time ago and spoke differently. However, most of the audiobook readers out there (I get books on tape from the library all the time, mostly classic literature) give much better performances than Mr. Harrison's. The audio production is good, but the talent smacks of amateurism. Ultimately, it's about the quality of the entertainment. I wouldn't enjoy someone speaking this way in a movie or a stage play, and I certainly don't want it piped into my ears through my ipod.

Praises for B.J. Harrison
I have been listening to his Podcasts from the beginning. I think he is fantastic. And I agree with another writer -- it is a great thing that he records these for free. I am also excited that Audible has picked up on him and is selling his books and past items. I would never seek out these stories, but I love that I have the opportunity to listen to them. I am too busy enjoying them to notice his accent, except to expect his accent to be of the period. I think he is an excellent reader -- right up there with Jim Dale! And I "read" all my books on tape -- usually one a week as I live in Manhattan and take a lot of buses. I also exercise regularly, and have been known to double my time on a machine just to finish a podcast. I hope he keeps them coming as I, too, look forward to them, and mostly listen to them immediately. Thanks, B.J. You are a gem!

Love the stories...the voice...not so much...Sorry!
I really enjoyed this podcast and love classic stories...until I listened to it one too many times. If I could make a request to Mr. Harrison, it would be to use his natural voice for ALL his characters while he reads. Sorry! It just gets a little old to hear the same "dramatic" voices in almost every tale--ESPECIALLY the female voices! Oh, dear--the forced falsetto for female voices right in my ear (don't most of us listen to these on our iPods?) makes me cringe. I do appreciate the podcast, but I can't listen to them anymore because the voices haunt me!

This was one of the first podcasts I subscribed to and I am still looking for one that is even close to as good as this. The stories are wonderful, but the best part is B.J. The Best!!! Thumbs up!!! 5 Stars!!!
B.J. Harrison is, by far, the best reader in the itunes stable. Though much of his competition sounds like the WOPR computer from WarGames, this is still a compliment of the highest order. One small caveat; itunes, for some reason, will delete earlier episodes as you acquire new ones, sometimes before you have enjoyed them. What's the deal with that?? Also, please make Mr. Harrisons entire library available for download! Thanks and kudos again to B.J!

Would love to hear you read some classic Edagawa Rampo from the 1920's
The short Mystery and horror fiction of the Japanese Mystery writer (pen name) Edagawa Rampo wound be fantastic to hear. He was one of the foremost mystery writers of his time and is now little known or heard of His pseudo name was a variation of the spelling of Edgar Allan Poe.. His work has been translated beautifully into English and reads exceptionally well. His short story, "The Human Chair" is one of his very best. It's incredibly intriguing, suspenseful, and with a twist ending that leaves you astonished. It left me wanting to find and hear more of his fiction. Please bring the author back through your venue. Rare quality and great choices!
I'm so grateful to have these stories chosen-for and told-to me in just the right portions by a fine performer. He's got the love for the same fiction that stirs my imagination, and it shows. There's a broad variety, and the choices are uncommon enough that they're fresh and exciting to hear. I do wish they were single-episode stories only, since I really love the short form, and know there is so much material that fits this length, but I'm not complaining!

Genuinely great
B.J. Harrison's selection of material, coupled with his professional grade production values, has yielded one of the handful of actually meaningful and rewarding podcasts currently available. If you're into mid-19th to mid-20th century literature (give or take), you will likely find these narrations more than competent. If you're new to the works, you will likely find yourself drawn into this world. One caveat: recently, Harrison has begun pulling the episodes after about a month and then putting them up for sale, so be sure to stay subscribed in order to get these wonderful narrations free. They'd be worth buying, to be sure, but who wants to pass up something as great as this for free? Check out the website, too, where he offers a handful of exclusive recordings, also free!

Excellent Performances!
B.J. truly makes these classics come alive. He knows exactly how and where to put the inflectons and emphases so that the sometimes difficult and slightly antiquated language is easily understood, and his vast array of voices make the characters come to life. My favorite so far has been P.G. Wodehouse's "Leave it to Jeeves." I would love to hear more of the "Jeeves" stories!

mixed feelings
While I find many of the stories enjoyable, I agree with other reviewers that Mr. Harrison's half-American, half-British accent can make him seem like a poseur. On the other hand, maybe he is actually British to some degree--I've heard people with American parents who grow up in Britain speak kind of like that. I don't think we can completely knock him for the accent without further information. HOWEVER, the intended sophistication of his diction is completely betrayed when he mispronounces words, usually proper names, like "Bowdoin" and "Poughkeepsie." Overall, I find I enjoy about half of the podcasts. I bail out early and delete the others.

My Favorite Podcast
I am subscribed to quite a few podcasts, but this is the only one that I listen to religiously. The podcast has fantastic content, is performed spectacularly well, and comes out quite frequently given the amount of work that must go into it. B.J. Harrison has clearly had a great deal of theatrical training, which is evident in the many different accents and voices that he can produce at the drop of a hat. Bravo! I especially enjoy listening to the Classic Tales while taking long car trips. It makes the ride fly by.

Great when it is great
Up front you must devote at least 45 minutes at a stretch to do this podcast justice. And, don't plan on falling in love with every single story. If you don't dig a story, pass it by. But when this podcast works, you feel like you found buried treasure.

every day guy into the classics?
ok so i'm an every day guy and i can't say that i've ever really been interested in reading the classics let alone reading at all... i just happened to stumble up on this podcast and it's great... i get to learn about classic literature all the while not having to put a book up to my nose and strain my eyes (one of the reasons i don't like to read). This podcast is of the highest quality and i've intruduced many other people to it and they love it as well.... a must have on the old ipod...

His tone, diction, and enthusiasm for the short stories he reads bring listeners into the world of the work. Sincerely a must-have for literature fans, and anyone searching for a good story. Harrion's delivery is top-notch and the production quality of this podcast could not be better. He has introduced me numerous works to which I had heretofore been unexposed. He keeps the material coming at regular intervals and I know first hand that he listens to his audience's feedback. He is a one-of-a-kind entertainer.

I Love These Classic Tales!
This is wonderful podcast. I have heard tales that I never knew about before and after listening to them, google them and look up read them. Truly, many are tales I have never heard of so the classic tales podcast is not only entertaining to hear but introducing me to stories I've never read before. B.J. Harrison does a wonderful job.

Ouch!
For choice of material I'd rate this 5 stars. When Mr. Harrison gives voice to a specific character I think he's great. But whenever he narrates anything in the first person I can't help wincing. Does the reader know that there is a difference between reading and acting?? To hear him try to emote every single word in a sentence is so excruciating painful that my attention is taken completely away from the story. I wish he would just calm down and read in a natural voice! (And the tag line: "...so often trod, so soon forgotten..."? Does that make sense? They're not forgotten - that's what makes them CLASSICS!)

Just what I want
The selection of tales is nearly perfect for what is available. People who have complained need to realize a few things: 1) Mr Harrison has to choose short stories from the public domain. It just so happens that most "classic tales" are already there. 2) Many classic tales are, uh, by definition OLD. Complaining about the narrator's "accent" makes little sense. Mr Harrison has to choose a voice that doesn't sound like it's someone from 2008. Some people have wondered why he sounds British--well, urm, a few centuries ago many Americans were only a few generations removed from England, and most of the authors showcased in this podcast are from nineteenth-century America or else actually from England. Does Mr Harrison's accent sound phony? I don't know, I never really thought of it as an "accent" but as an effected (and effective) reading voice. I'm an American living in Britain--but like most people I'm not two hundred years old, so I've never heard "accents" from a century or a century and a half ago on either side of the Atlantic. I would imagine that genuine voices of people from those times would inescapably sound "phony" to some listeners today. Moreover, this artificial quality is sort of the point. If I'm listening to Dickens read aloud, it would displease me NOT to hear a Victorian-era voice. If I'm listening to Twain, I want to hear an old American accent much like the one Mr Harrison provides. Is his reading voice perfect? No, but I think it's very good. Do I think he puts a lot of emotion into certain passages? Yes. Too much emotion? Sometimes I think so, when I'm not particularly into the story. But I don't think he "hams it up" too much. I've never found his voice or accent to be a problem. Sometimes I want reverence and (slightly reserved) enthusiasm for the classics. Sometimes I want to hear sophistication and excitement for our American literary heritage and the heritage of many European writers from the past centuries. Not only is it escapism--to imagine how these authors lived, how they managed to write--but it is edifying. This podcast gives me that once a week. I love it. It's a shame that there aren't other podcasts like it, completing with it, being inspired by it, trying to outdo it, just as those featured writers from centuries ago were inspired by each other with each tale. ...I don't understand one reviewer's "Frasier Crane" comment. Frasier Crane wasn't British, but I guess anything "smart sounding" must be British, right? I guess "talking smart" is just an intolerable crime to some ears. Maybe when Mr Harrison reads some of these sophisticated or wordy, purple-prose authors (e.g. Poe) he should just not read the words that are there or read them in more of a Homer Simpson voice? Thank God for this podcast. It's my one hour a week of contemporary entertainment media that is actually smart, enjoyable and literary.

appreciate the effort, but...
I truly wanted to get past BJ's annoying, pretentious delivery and catch up on some classics, but I just couldn't take it. I listened to "The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" and much prefered his exaggerated crochetty old man voice to his "normal" narration. Had to turn off "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" after just a few minutes. It's a shame, because it seems like he's trying to do a real service.

An Engaging Listen
Harrison’s style isn't for everyone, but his smoothly changing persona from one character to another is impressive. Those reviews that state his voice is 'over the top', are not listening with a mind that Mr. Harrison is intentionally giving a classic character actor performance. Although there are a very few editing hiccups at times, let's give the man a break! He is reading excellent literature at no charge on a weekly basis! I submit that 99% of the population could not do nearly as well. I thank you for this enjoyable podcast.

BJ's rendering of A Christmas Carol was one of the best I've ever heard, and I've heard quite a few. And what's wrong with that?

Suggestion
There's a lot to like in these audios, but a great lesson for B.J. to learn is the wisdom of "less is more." The listener has to cringe at times when the emotions swell and the reader starts to emote. Ordinary passages of narration come across great. There are certainly a lot of deadly dull and lifeless audiobooks being podcast, but that doesn't justify going to the opposite exteme of such hand-wringing. Cultivate self-restraint! That would put The Classic Tales Podcast in that happy medium between the boring and the hammy.

Classic Tales for the mind & soul!
I grew up loving books. They gave me a great advantage in school over my classmates. But with time, failing eyes, family and busy work load, who has time for a good book? Anyone Now! Classic Tales brings to life the novels with the spoken word and your mind's eye. You can "read" a good book on lunch or at work. For the month of October, classic horror ready me and my son for Halloween. Great way to introduce a modern teen to "The Legend of Sleepy Hallow." I knew he never read it but listen to it, ahh! If you miss good books or need to get someone interested in them, Classic Tales is for you! Thank You Mr. Harrison, for bring back my love of books!.... and for my free download of The Raven.

Many thanks to BJ for raising the bar on entertainment these days. Not only is this podcast totally fun, I'm amazed that someone is willing to do this for free. The time spent researching stories must be considerable, let alone reading them. BJ is also very openminded to suggestions and tries hard to present many of the stories and authors people are asking for. This podcast is great fun on those boring commutes to work, or those times when 160 television channels are showing nothing but trash.

What is up with the fake accent?
Great stories and you can't beat the price. My kids enjoy listening to these CLASSIC TALES, but I die a little every time BJ opens his mouth. I played a few snippets for a friend of mine from London. She kept waiting for a punchline, because to her, the atrocious accent was obviously a setup for a joke. A joke that never arrives. BJ PLEASE DROP THE FAKE ACCENT. WE LOVE AND SUPPORT YOU. There are some voices in the world I could listen to forever, and to that list I must now add B.J. Harrison. I enjoy a good story telling very much, however, the times I get to hear any are now so few and far between that I gave up hope of ever hearing another decent one again. Thank you so much for introducing me to the classics all over again. It's truly touching to know that some out there still know that at heart, we are all still hungry for a harrowing tale of adventure, a mystery that stumps us until the very end, or a spine tingling tale that might just make you unpack the night light.

Classic Tales is great even if you have never read "the classics." It's a fun way to get used to the tempo, writing style, and narrative nature of older literature, something that puts young people off of the classics. In addition to that, listening to BJ can make you a better orator and that makes reading out loud easier and more fun. Keep up the great work! Highly recommended for all.

EXCELLENT~
This is probably my favorite podcast. I've always enjoyed reading but the older I get, the less free time I have to sit down and read. This podcast allows me to enjoy classic tales while I'm driving or doing other chores, which is an excellent use of my time. Harrison is a fantastic reader and the selection of works have been immensely interesting. (It wasn't until I heard the Sherlock Holmes podcasts that I remembered I *HAVE* read the stories, AGES ago. Thanks for reminding me!)

Wilder deftly dissects it, and we examine it in the many ways love manifests itself. We’ve seen it in the parent-child relationship, and the sibling relationship. We’ve also seen it in the romantic relationship, with Camilla Perichole and the brothers Manuel and Esteban. Today we’ll examine the surrogate parent relationship. Afterwards, we’ll conclude our journey. - Ep. 820, The Bridge of San Luis Rey, Part 1 of 3, by Thornton WilderFive people fall to their deaths when a bridge collapses in Peru. Can Brother Juniper discover the reason that these five individuals had to die? Thornton Wilder, today on The Classic Tales Podcast. Welcome to Season 17 of The Classic Tales Podcast. Your support on a monthly basis is vital to keep us going. Go to http://classictalesaudiobooks.com and become a financial supporter today. Thank you so much. Thornton Wilder won two Pulitzer Prizes: one for the novel we’ll begin today: The Bridge of San Luis Rey, and another for his play: Our Town. In The Bridge of San Luis Rey, Brother Juniper witnesses the tragedy of five people falling to their deaths when a bridge collapses in Peru. He takes it upon himself to study the lives of those who fell in the accident, in an effort to figure out why these five people had to die. In 1998, the book was selected by the American Modern Library as one of the 100 best novels of the twentieth century. It has also been hinted that this book is the progenitor of the modern-day disaster epic, where a single disaster intertwines the lives of the victims, whose previous histories are then explored through a series of flashbacks. British Prime Minister Tony Blair quoted the final words of the book in a memorial service for the victims of the September 11th attacks. Nine days after the attacks, he read: "A witness to the deaths, wanting to make sense of them and explain the ways of God to his fellow human beings, examined the lives of the people who died, and these words were said by someone who knew the victims, and who had been through the many emotions, and the many stages, of bereavement and loss. "But soon we will die, and all memories of those five will have left earth, and we ourselves shall be loved for a while and forgotten. But the love will have been enough; all those impulses of love return to the love that made them. Even memory is not necessary for love. There is a land of the living and a land of the dead, and the bridge is love. The only survival, the only meaning." Bellarion is now released. Continue listening after today’s story for a healthy sample of this amazing piece of historical fiction. Order now and be entered in a drawing to win a Treasure Island Audiobookmarks™ Gift Set. Just in time for the holidays! I heard something that didn’t sit right with me last week. There was a book club in my neighborhood that wanted to discuss The Scarlet Letter, and a couple of the people in the group were excited, but waiting for the audiobook to be available at the local library. Well, we’re not doing that! My friend Rachel came up with this idea, and I’ve embellished it. Here it is: If you’re doing a classic title for your book club, you can buy ONE copy of the audiobook, and share the download link with the people in your book club. Just send me an email, and let me know the plan. Furthermore, if you want, we can set up a zoom call, and I can talk to your book club about the creation of the audiobook you all are discussing. Again, just send me an email, and we can set it up. I’m happy to do it. And finally, one more thing. I discovered that Audiobookmarks™, the bookmark with QR codes to stream an audiobook, can be read by Chromebooks. So kids who are reading Huckleberry Finn, Great Expectations, etc. in many public schools, can listen to my narration and follow along even if they don’t have a smart phone. It struck me that the Audiobookmarks™ can be a dynamic way to help kids learn to read, and it can help adults learn to read better. I’m starting a venture to get all of the most commonly studied titles into this format, and get them into the hands of students everywhere. To support this venture, simply make any purchase on our website at classictalesaudiobooks.com. This is our new direction and focus. Make amazing audiobooks, and use them to create tools to help people of all ages learn to read better. Improving literacy is what we’re all about. Thanks for helping out. Okay. Now, for a nice, scary story. Happy Halloween, everyone! And now, The Dead Smile, by F. Marion Crawford.
