Question for Pod Discussion
I’ve been listening for several years and really enjoy the show. I’m wondering if schools with lesser NIL resources could Moneyball recruiting? Which positions have the most market inefficiencies generally (or specific to conferences)? For non-blue bloods it seems to me it makes more sense to allocate resources towards linemen and multi-position athletes than just one five star QB or pass rusher. Thoughts?

Great idea!
So smart to have a Sunday Show. I’m sure it’s tough, but true college fans are ready for discussion the day after the games are played.

Audio issues and lack of energy
I’m pretty forgiving about the energy even though most shows sound like both hosts just woke up from naps, but if podcasting is an important enough part of their jobs that they commit time each week to do it then why does it sound like a recorded phone call. If you don’t care to iron that out why should I care to listen?

Love the pod but all this time later one of the Athletic’s premier podcasts still sounds like two recorded phone connections?

Great content, poor audio quality
The quality of the audio connection, especially on Stew’s end, has been very poor lately. It’s making listening to my favorite national CFB pod, kind of a chore.

Excellent
Stew and Bruce do such a great job. Always prepared, knowledgeable, and entertaining. As a college football fan on the West Coast, I’m not sure what to make of the new CFB landscape, but this podcast has helped me through it.

What makes a great recruiter?
Bruce, It’s kind of startling to see what Mario Cristobal is doing on the recruiting trail. Since you’re familiar with Miami and Cristobal, can you be specific about what he’s doing that’s so unique that allows him to recruit like this. We hear all these terms like “relentless” “passionate about the U” but can you give some specifics about what he and other great recruiters do. Thx

NIL in recruiting is good. College football fandom is wrong.
If your CFB team now loses in state recruits Becz a nearby school pays more… it’s good for the recruit. But you should now not care at all about who the players are. For all you know they could be on another team next season. Bama and A&M and UGA are trying to buy your best players off both your roster and your recruiting board… I’m out on that situation. I’ll just cheer for the recruits when they get to the NFL. I dnt want to hate these kids. Get your money and I’ll find out who you are come draft day. Unless this some how balances out.

His only contribution to the sport is having controversial takes to make up for is lack of an original thought that would add to the conversation.

The best of college football. Even in the dead time they produce interesting thoughtful insight. They are solid because their enthusiasm and love for college football comes through but they never compromise reality👍BTW Chuck Ealey from Toledo finally made CF HOF.

Disappointing
Only this show would try and distill some meaning out of a completely depreciated bowl season. Bowls have become trumped up pick-up games that schools with overinflated value (B1G en masse) rely on to support their claims of conference strength. They are no more than apathetic side-shows that prove nothing and achieve nothing. This is the Era of Entitlement. CFB is now a place where you can earn without earning and unit without consequence. Media created, media spread, media damned.

Can’t say enough about their quality reporting, CFB connections, and their insight. Podcast is helpful, funny, and an overall great listen. Can’t recommend this (and an Athletic subscription) enough.

Great discussion ruined by terrible ads
I’ve been listening since the beginning, and the ad insertions are getting worse over time. I’m not talking about the ad reads by Stew and Bruce - those are handled well. I’m talking about the external ads inserted by some ad server. They are jarring as they are out of the blue - no warning at all. It just goes from Stew talking to some random voice shouting “Hey you! Yeah you” and a bunch of yelling about garbage they are shilling. To say they are obnoxious doesn’t begin to describe it. Do a better job, athletic.

Mailbag Question
First, let me just say that I believe The Audible is the most insightful college football podcast that exists. I thoroughly enjoy your content and often finish each episode as a more knowledgeable football fan. Also, Bruce, I love your book “The QB”. I bought it years ago and I still read over it time and time again. My question for the podcast is this: Bruce, you have mentioned time and time again that USC is in the best position of any Power 5 school to dominate its conference. If this is accurate, what coach do you believe USC should hire if you were the AD making the decision, and additionally, what is a realistic timeline to expect to see positive results from USC in the future. *positive results can be subjective so I will let you decide what that looks like as the hypothetical AD in this situation. Thanks for considering my question!

Content is average and not as timely as other pods, but biggest negative is 8 min out of 35 min show we’re ads. Seriously? I’m all all for paying the bills and making a buck, but I could watch broadcast TV and see fewer commercials. I’m fans of both Bruce and Stewart, but this is way too any ads for mediocre content.

Bruce is great, Stew… not as much
If the podcast was just Bruce I would give it a 5 star rating, but Stew drags down the overall rating immensely. He is insufferable and has a tendency to be a jackass. One of the best decisions that I ever made was to unfollow Stewart and Clay Travis on Twitter.

Shilling The Athletic
Guys, I have followed and enjoyed your podcast for a long time. Before you were at the Athletic. These guys are probably great fathers
Stu and Bruce have wonderful voices and I’m sure their kids love to have them read them stories. Speaking of which, once the season is over, I’m sure their kids will enjoy seeing them more. Please go easy on the 2010 Auburn Team. That was a senior heavy team and a loaded coaching staff (Gus Malzahn, Eli Drinkowitz, BYU OC Jeff Grimes). Maybe quit calling it the worst championship team ever

Still a staple, but not as good
I’ve been listening to the pod since 2014/2015. It’s not as good as it used to be, but I continue to listen for Bruce’s insights and the great interviews with people from the CFB realm. Bruce is a true insider and brings great input on game analysis, coaching hires, and big picture issues. I increasingly feel that Stewart adds no value and is simply a vapid talking head.

Bruce makes the show!
I love to hear Bruce talk about college football! He is knowledgeable, understands the game and provides spot on analysis and great insight. Stu does not seem to understand the game at all and speaks more like a fan rather than informed podcast host who provides knowledge and insight about the games! He often offers wild or uninformed opinions which Bruce has to call him on! I think the show would be a lot better if Bruce was paired with someone who can break fresh insight and perspective to the conversation. Stu is an excellent writer but does a really poor job of hosting the show!

Ruined by Woke Stew
I listened to this podcast for years always enjoying Bruce’s measured and smart takes. Stew occasionally had good insights despite an eternally sour disposition. I never got why these two were paired because they come off as frenemies at best. But I can’t listen anymore given Stew’s wild takes and attacks on people. Two stars purely for Bruce being a baron to Stew’s peasant.

Bruce, We Love You...
but while Stewart’s input on has become increasingly uninspired in recent years, this year it became insufferable. The surface deep analysis became increasingly sprinkled with long winded personal opinion and thinly veiled political diatribe. Undoubtedly Stewart’s job at the Athletic encompasses more than just a college football podcast, but this year it became blatantly evident that a Medill graduate (We get it; You’ve told us many times) living in, the all-but-dead CFB market of, Northern California has lost touch with how the college football landscape has changed in the past 10 years.

I enjoy Bruce’s opinion but stews is just blah and worthless. He has a winey voice and adds no content that makes me want to listen. Enough of the fake UGA outrage
They aren’t preventing anyone from making the playoff, so why do you care to beat the dead horse regarding their ranking? Clemson has one good win and UGA has none. They also haven’t beaten anyone in the top 10, like UGA. OU has two good wins and a bad loss. UGA has none. Coastal would be pummeled by UGA. Yet you cry like babies over their ranking. It’s obnoxious and just reinforces Bruce’s longtime disrespect for the program all through the Richt years and now. You don’t get access, we get it. Get over yourselves. And stop with the OU, LSU and OSU favoritism because you get access to them. You lose more and more credibility with us every day. I’m considering unsubscribing because of this, seriously.

Pod has changed
Giving it 5 stars out of respect for Bruce, but the show has changed recently. I’ve listened to Stew complain about things for years, but accepted that’s part of his personality. Recently the show is hard to listen to due to Stew’s constant complaining about... everything. He talks about COVID non-stop.

Major production problems
I like Stew and Bruce and have listened to their pod for a long time. However, the production problems are making it harder to keep that up. The audio fluctuates from mediocre to just plain bad, the ad breaks are poorly placed and overly long, and the content is becoming lacking as well. If you’re going to keep this pod going, maybe try to fix some of the issues — because it seems like you’re putting in little to no effort.

Final Straw
Well, that’s it, I’m unsubscribing from this podcast and The Athletic. Stewart discusses the Wisconsin cancellation of the Nebraska game, which is 100% the fault of Wisconsin and The Big 10 conference and the only thing he says about Nebraska is making fun of random Twitter comments from people who may not even be Nebraska fans and essentially laughs it off. No word about how NU fought to have football, took the absolute brunt of starting the fight and now due to no fault of their own, losing out on doing the one thing they fought to do...which is play the sport that pays your paycheck Stewart. Shameful. I won’t be supporting that paycheck any longer.

Coronavirus comment
Love the podcast but Stewart’s joke about the SEC and coronavirus was way out of line. It’s a lethal virus and at the end of the day, these are college kids who are sick. I get the whole build up around college football might make them seem older than they are, but these are 18-23 year old kids. I’m sure if a parent heard that snide comment about their son they would be infuriated. Again, love the show and I’ve been a reader for years, just felt the comment was extremely inappropriate.

Does Bruce watch CFB?
So many times Bruce has very little functional knowledge of southern football. This week he is clueless about UGA’s defense not being on the field for TN’s first TD, and later having TN start on the 30, much less the fact that they scored a TD and gave the Offense the ball on a short field twice. Alabama will be a tough test, but at this point they are a nasty D. If you don’t have a clue, keep your opinions to yourself, Bruce.

Long time listener
I love these guys. I’ve been listening since their early fox days, but lately it’s gone down hill. WAY too many ad reads for the time of the podcast, and they aren’t strategically placed. In the middle of a topic, AD, or before one replies to a question, AD. I get you need ads. But just make them better placed. It’s frustrating that a 45 minute episode has 4 ad reads randomly spaced through the episode.

Amusing insightfulness for the serious CFB fan
This podcast is a gift for all CFB fans. Both Stu and Bruce bring deep experience, insight, and perspective to those of us who already know a lot about CFB and follow it closely but may not be able to connect some of the dots about events both on and off the field. While many CFB podcasts and journalists can talk about on field events capably, Stu and Bruce weave those discussions into their in-depth knowledge of the roles of conference commissioners, head coaches, ADs, and SIDs in a way that brings the complex, messy, chaotic, and absolutely beautiful picture that is CFB together. My deep gratitude goes out to Stu, Bruce, and everyone who works on the show. It is a pleasure to listen to each week.

Weak Mandel
How does Mandel keep his job? A simple tug becomes a diatribe on things not to do. This from a person depending on college football for a living but if he had a son would never let him play! Mandel crowd are more into the touchy feely side of sports other than the toughness required which is what life really is about. Life is tough and we enjoy a soft way of living in this country while a lot of the world does not. You play football you expect and should be tough, not the softness of the Mandel’s of the world.

Mediocre in every way
It’s hard to know how these two made it to the figurative top of CFP media. Their opinions are little more than groupthink. Their game analysis is nothing a high schooler couldn’t do. They quote advanced stats and traditional stats with little understanding of what it takes to win a football game. They both carry biases. Stewart offers a lot of snark notwithstanding a dearth of substance.

For my money (I mean....it’s free), Stu amd Bruce provide the best CFB content in the podcast space (close competition with PAPN and SV). I’ve read and listened to these 2 for years
Stew & Bruce have been the two college football writers I’ve followed every season for at least 15 years. I like their pod because there is no yelling at each other or frat boy antics and they seem like genuinely decent people with a lot of college football contacts and a lot of passion for the sport they cover.

The Best College Football Podcast, Year-Round
Twice a week, from spring practice to the National Championship game and all through offseason, Bruce Feldman and Stewart Mandel deliver the best college football podcast that any fan of this amazing sport could want. The show includes comprehensive discussion of all the big games and latest news in the sport, extensive interviews with coaches, former players and media colleagues and a thriving mailbag segment (complete with a jingle from Rob Stone). The Audible is an essential and entertaining listen for those who consider Saturdays in the fall to be the best time of the year.

Cry me a river
I'm one and done with this podcast. Just listened to 25 minutes of rationalization about cord cutting as essentially the only reason why ESPN terminated 100 yesterday. If you don't think there's a cumulative affect of crappy content and left wing zealotry, then you're already smoking more of what I know you do. Eight years of Obama promotion, sitting for the national anthem, and myriad other go to left-wing causes is causing people to turn off or tune out. These guys don't get it.

Smart content, terrible quality
The hosts and guests have great insight - I really want to love this podcast. But the production quality is downright awful. It sounds like they're recording on their cell phones. Like it, but I wish I could love it
I really like it when they talk about football. It's an entertaining listen. I don't have too much to add on that front. When they stick to their core knitting, I think the podcast is great. I have two criticisms: 1) I GET IT - You guys are on TV. No one cares about the trials and tribulations of being on TV. It smacks of vanity to spend so much time talking about it. Stick to football talk, please. 2) Don't break up the podcast into clips and then put them on iTunes. My podcast app ends up downloading some of the clips, but not the full episode. If I'm listening on the train, I can't go and download the full episode. This is really annoying. I don't know why you started doing this, but please stop.
