Art Of Manliness is Great!
Iâve been following Brett and Kate for over a decade now. I first did a search years ago on what I should carry in a fishing tackle box. Up popped an article Brett write about the things you should consider. Since then, Iâve read articles, listened to the podcasts, and even some of the video blogs Brett and Kate used to do. Iâve included many of their books in packages to my sons. Iâm a graduate of the Strenuous Life program they developed. This series is for everyone who is interested in growing. Period. Thank you Brett and Kate for your unending pursuit and promotion of true masculinity and manliness.

Best Interviews on the Web
Fascinating variety of topics in a show I never miss. Host sounds like he reads every book cover to cover and comes up with the perfect questions to lead authors down the road to telling a great story. Iâve read a lot of great books I would otherwise not know because of this show. Give this show a try! Update Sep 28, 2022: the exceptionally high quality of this podcast continues. Keep up the great work.

A Feast for Thought
I donât often listen to podcasts, but when I travel I make sure to listen to several of the AOM episodes. The podcasts provide plenty to think about, and are packed with opportunities for action. Brett is clearly a thoughtful learner, and he asks great questions. His questions and the answers he receives help me to learn too! All in all, this podcast helps me to think and to act on what I learn. Great job AOM team!

Extremely Practical and Worth the Listen
I often disagree with the worldview/meta narrative being put forth. However, this podcast is jam packed with very practical wisdom. They not only teach helpful principles, they give very tangible steps to developing them in oneâs life. I recommend this podcast for anyone seeking to live more intentionally everyday.

Great info. Fun to listen to, and ideas to improve life
I have been listing to podcasts for a while and so many of them are 1 hour of people babbling. This pod is NOT that. Brett have a great cadence to his interviews were 45 minutes just slips by in in the best way. I love to have this show on when I am cooking or working on projects. Something insightful (maybe even transformative) for everyone
Iâve been listening to this show for years, and it has been the source of some of the most beneficial things I have learned over that period. For examples from memory, Iâve learned things on time management, finance, communication, fitness and even coping with regret. Most of the best books I have read over the past few years have been from guests on this show. I really appreciate the hostâs introductions to each episode. It gives me an idea of this is an episode where Iâll really want to listen closely or perhaps as background noise or even skip altogether. The audio quality is generally excellent.

Smart, Valuable, and Interesting podcast
I think the AoM podcast could be the highest value per minute podcast Ive listened to. Has really grown on me
This podcast has really grown on me over the last year or two. The topics are wide ranging (food, psychology, history, exercise, philosophy, etc.) but thatâs what keeps it interesting. Brett is a good interviewer and finds good guests â rhe self help-y ones I tend to skim but some others have really stuck with me (I have been thinking a lot recently about a history episode about how even the founding fathers became pessimistic about the country before the end of their lives). Anyway, I highly recommend.

What makes a Man?
One of the most versatile and engrossing podcasts Iâve listened to. As someone who grew up without a strong male role model; manliness or basic Manly skills were not passed on to me. Enter âThe Art of Manlinessâ, which seeks to bring the forgotten skills and masculine qualities of the previous generations to the modern man. While the website covers tutorials on things like shaving, starting a fire, or changing your carâs oil; the podcast is more in-depth and features a wide variety of guests who talk about famous soldiers, methods to improve your health, or just plain ways to be a better man. Highly recommended!

Listened Since 2017! Never dull! So rich and helpful
A group of men recommended the Art of manliness podcast. Skeptically, I listened, thinking it was all about hormones and fitness. Instead, my mind, soul, and relationships get fed. I am a sold out, all in, follower of Jesus Christ. Iâm not sure where all of the authors are in their faith journey, but rarely do I find anyone who is off the way of faith in Christ. Lastly, I share episodes with my family and friends who also enjoy richness of Bretz questioning and his guests.

Podcast mistiyled. Instructions on being a great strong human bein
But that doesnât fit well into any letter combo I can come up with. My husband is a man who lives much of what AOM is and I co wider him one of the few âreal menâ I know. No heâs not a lumberjack or a matine or a tattooed auto mechanic. Heâs someone who is authentic strong in his beliefs calm and truly thinks over what he says and hears before acting and responding. And respects others and is kind to most of them. Iâm a woman and I enjoy listening to AOM as a lifeâs little instruction book on how to be a great human being listening to the author give us all (men and women) instruction on how to make the characters in the song Find out Who Your Friends Are Listen online Tim McGraw, Tracy Lawrence come to life. That friend you know has your back. The bail buddy the one you call when the roof collapses and that one that helps you refund the meaning of life when the bottom drops out. Some of the lessons are a Gibbs slap to the back of our head to use our common sense! đ. And some are simple itâs ok to not be a superhero when you spend all your time being a great and strong human being. Carry on making AOM please!

AoM is, by far, my favorite Podcast!
Howdy all, I usually donât do reviews, but for this show, I have been meaning too. We all have certain comforts in life that we all crave and look forward too, such as a favorite recipe that your mother makes, a certain classic movie on a Sunday morning, a sip of a favorite beverage in a favorite location of your hose or other special place. Well, for me, the Art of Manliness has eased itself into one of my favorite things. I enjoy a decent ride to work through out the week, about an hour each way, and I look forward to listening to Brett and his guest educate and entertain at least once or twice a week on my drive. I find myself going to past episodes when I get impatient to wait for the latest one to pop up in my podcast library. AoM just simply puts me in a great mood. I feel better off in so many ways, from fitness, and history, to manly subjects and about everything in between. Thank you Brett for upgrading my life. I hope others will find this review useful and give the Art of Manliness a try! For Men, and even our Female counterparts, will find the topics useful and worth listening to! V/r, Scott

Like family
Myself and my family have listened to Brettâs outstanding show since the beginning and I therefore canât recommend it or rave about highly enough. I thought it high time to share some well earned praise for this absolute gem. Iâve listened for so long that at this point I think of Brett as my wiser, more patient, and articulate brother - albeit one Iâve never actually met! There is a palpable familial energy to the show which is quite comforting and reassuring and it is extremely rare. Donât be offput by the title. My wife absolutely loves the show as do our two girls. They have grown up with it in the background. Itâs their top request for Papaâs contribution to our road-trips playlists (100% true story). We all find the range of topics and guests to be quite interesting and engaging. Itâs exciting to anticipate what will be on next. Additionally, one of the main reasons the show is so consistently excellent is because Brett is one of the best listeners first, interviewers second. He knows the topic (for example, has actually read a guestâs book), asks informed questions, respectfully leaves room for his guests to speak, and summarizes complex material like no other! Always in such a way as to include, not alienate. One of, if not the best there is. Keep up the great - and actionable - work! Thank you.

Way back when, this showâs blog kept turning up in search results when looking for information on shaving, and menâs clothing. If there were any article that really stayed, it was âstop being their friend, and start dating themâ, in reference to dating women. It would be great if this article got brought on to the podcast. the podcast seemed to get watered down a bit from the blog, so I donât listen to all the episodes, but the host keeps good interviews on track.

Just as there are books that could (and probably should) have been mere articles, there are podcasts that could and should have been five minute videos. This is not one of them. If anything, the AOM podcast could use an even longer format and I would love it.

Essential Listening for Any Man
Part Galdolf, part Sherlock Holmes, Brett shares wisdom through his podcast and website. Wisdom that should have been revealed to us through our role models; fathers, elders, or other sage leaders in our community or tribe. The Art of Manliness is just that⊠an art. It is a skill that needs refining and revising. I am glad to have this resource available to me. Itâs like having a wise grandfather at my disposal.

Iâve followed AoM for about five years. Every show has a moment when I pause and recognize I learned something new that I can take action on even if the change opportunity is small. I share the show, talk about it with friends who listened to the same shows. Thanks For Helping Men Be Men
I am a self-employed, almost-fifty married man who has raised two daughters, failed and succeeded in business, am a new grandpa, and so much more. I'm sick and tired of how the concept of manliness is ridiculed and portrayed in such a poor light in our American society. I firmly believe that lack of true manliness is the at the core of what is causing our society to rot and die on the vine. Deadbeat dads, vapid and brainless, self-absorbed beasts who strut their stuff, and the incessant demeaning portrayals of men on television, film, etc., has become the standard that people seem to live up to in their real lives. Brett has done an excellent job of reviving the classic concepts of what true manliness is, and making them known to the world. For the most part, the content produced here is well worth a listen and is actionable in almost every way. It's long past time for men to be what they were created to be, and to accept their responsibilities and take care of themselves and their business and quit acting like fools. The Art of Manliness is a great instrument to help to this end. Listen, apply it and make the world a much better place than you found it.

Strong ideas and good delivery
Brett is clearly a professional, and Iâm grateful for all the authors and ideas his show has exposed me to. His tone of voice and thoughtful questions make me feel like Iâm right there in the conversation. Brett is obviously really smart, but just as important- he is totally relatable. I actually resent the title of the podcast, not because I personally dislike it, but because when I tell people about it they often jump to conclusions and assume it is promoting toxic masculinityâŠ.which is the complete opposite of what actually occurs on the episodes. Much of the content has nothing to do with differences between men and women. I highly recommend listening to this show, whether youâre a man or a woman. Definitely one of my favorite podcasts. Thanks, Brett for all you do!

Learning new skills, and about myself
One thing Iâve always valued about the Art of Manliness is the vast range of topics and skills the website itself has provided me over the years. One article in particular inadvertently and unknowingly started a family tradition with me and my father than I am now passing on to my son. Probably more than one. I had never given listening to a podcast a try and given all of the content I have valued out of the AoM, it was only natural I gave Brettâs Podcast a shot. Just let the website, the content and guests are varied and giving the listener new insights and information on a number of different topics that are both thought provoking and eye opening. The focus is of course on the concepts manliness and masculinity and all of the things that that entails from study and history of honor and virtue, to coping with life in the modern era as a man seeking to discover and understand himself and his nature. Find an episode that jumps out at you, press play and give it a listen. You wonât regret.

Manly? Yes. But I like it too!
Years ago took a test designed show where people fall on a spectrum between things we think of as feminine and things we think of as masculine. Now before every one goes nuts, the thing that was interesting about it was that it measured traits like agreeableness, and physical traits but there was also a cultural component. It asked things like, do you know how to sew on a button, or can you change a tire. I scored as trending masculine, I think because I know how to do things like changing tires and the names of certain tools. My kids and all their friends tested neutral. This was mainly because, I think, there are certain things that havenât been passed down, maybe because we just go to YouTube or expect someone else to do it. Thereâs a generation of people who donât know how to make small talk or how to make friends, or how to spot someone at the gym. This podcast is always engaging, sensible and it fills that gap, addressing things we didnât know we needed to know. My teenaged sons like it and I like it, even though some of the stuff isnât relevant to me. Itâs a good podcast.

Interesting and Well Done
When I first saw the word "manliness" I groaned a little - but I am glad I stuck with it.The topics are really interesting, and not about how to build up your muscular body. The Widest Range of Useful And Engaging Interviews in Podcasting
I have learned so much listening to the Art of Manliness podcast. Started listening during the pandemic and quickly became a huge fan. As I went back through the archive to listen to evergreen episodes (the vast majority of them), I quickly became impressed by what an incredible range of topics and ideas were discussed. Brett invited guests from all walks of life. Professors, former members of the mob, former SEALs, security professionals, journalists, former LEOs, writers, businessmen, athletes, coaches, doctors, scientists, and even a couple guys who quit their jobs to build a cabin in the woods. Nowhere else will you find an episode on Plato next to an episode on Krav Maga. This podcast is for everyone who wants to learn. With podcasts on everything from business, to sports, to health and fitness, to philosophy, to history, to martial arts and self defense, to literature, to cooking, to productivity, to social commentary and sociology, to psychology and relationships, to what it means to be a man, there is something for everyone.

Always an interesting guest on, and Brett does a great job of keeping the conversation moving with excellent questions. I have discovered many great authors and books on this show. Update on my old review: This podcast remains one of my favorites. It continues to get better and the great topics and guests keep coming! I find myself on the AOM website all the time, as it is a library of useful information. Great job to Brett and the team for continuing to provide well researched and honest information on a range of topics relevant to men. (And many topics relevant to everyone.)

Meat and Potatoes
Impressed by hostâs thoughtfulness, quality of guests, and underserved topic: how to be a 21st century evolved man. A man who cultivates positive masculinity and has not succumb or resists the contemporary impulse to âfeminizeâ and pathologize boys and young men. As these are archetypes, traits I believe guided by hormones and genetics, women who want to cultivate these traits - say, leadership at work - will find the podcast insightful. For what itâs worth, Iâm a C-level executive who has been involved in menâs circles and personal development for 2 decades.

One of the Few Truly Great Podcasts
Iâve listened to this podcast for years; it really has withstood the test of time. I think the reason for its longevity is that it has remained interesting and useful to men of all ages and backgrounds. Brett is an outstanding interviewer because even though he is always knowledgeable and prepared, he keeps the focus on his guests. If a guest starts telling a story he has already heard, he doesnât do the DB move of letting them know heâs heard it before, because you can tell heâs more interested in respecting the guest and the listener than parading his knowledge or sucking up. I also love that he never makes the show political and always draws out the most useful and relevant content from guests. Every man should listen to this podcast; itâs that simple.

Awesome Podcast!
This is a great podcast to learn and hear more about topics you might be interested as well as topics you didnât even know youâd be interested in! There are a lot of podcasts out there with authors offering up opinions and discussing topics as if they are experts in everything, but Brettâs style of interviewing experts and authors in various topics brings a much more informative and much less opinionated discussion. Iâm always interested to see what he comes up with next and learning about a topic I never knew Iâd be interested in hearing!

The JRE for inspired men
I first dove into podcasts listening to the Joe Rogan Experience and loved how he brought intelligent people who had something to enlighten us all on. The problem was, not all conversations were with interesting people. Also, lot of the time I wondered where the conversation was going, and what was I really getting from the majority of the conversations? Meanwhile, Iâve been following the Art of Manliness website since its start, reading the great articles on how to be a better person, as well as a better husband, father, friend and coworker, but only recently turned to their podcasts and canât seem to turn them off when Iâm in the car or on my own. Listening to the same show a couple times to grasp concepts and following up with show notes to read more. Iâve purchased a lot of books lately from the guests of the show and now just trying to carve in time to read them all. The material isnât just for men, its about inspiring people who are looking to find out more about a wide range of diverse topics about basically anything. Seems to me it is encouraging folks to strengthening their community (and life) by leading by example. It should be called the Art of Life. Good job and thank you Bret and the AoM team for keeping this guy starving for curiosity!

A manly podcast for anyone trying to become a little better
This is truly a fantastic podcast. With so much talk of toxic masculinity it is so valuable to have a podcast (and indeed a website and blog) that shows what it means to be a man. The episodes range from how to survive the wilderness, to how to live a fulfilled life. The conversations range from philosophy, to parenting, history, and psychology. If you are looking for one podcast for the rest of your life, Iâd choose this one.

SLOW DOWN!!
I love this podcast. Itâs one of the first ones I ever started listening to, and Iâve been listening for 4 years. Itâs really not about manliness so much as just interviews with really interesting authors. But BRETT! BRO! COME ON MAN- SLOW DOWN! Youâre rushing through your sentences so much that your words just turn into a garbled hot mess of gibberish, especially with your ad copy and wraparounds. I think voice/acting lessons would definitely help that and maybe getting rid of filler words, exasperated sighs as you formulate questions, etc. If not voice lessons, than maybe write questions down ahead of time so it sounds more polished.

Re-evaluate what it means to be a man
This podcast has helped me take control of my life through better decision making and establishing a greater overall outlook towards my role in life as a man. I have been listening for more than 5 years. AOM establishes a what it means to be a man in a way that really resonates with me. In society and the media, I see a lot of focus on the superficial alpha male, headstrong, gives no cares perception of men. Rather than that, AOM separates itself by focusing on what manliness means in terms of maturity vs. immaturity, initiative vs. passivity, responsibility vs. irresponsibility. The podcast is great and their website has loads of interesting and helpful articles, as well as a nice shop section (I own two mugs and two books). Brett is a terrific orator and keeps his interviews entertaining and easy to follow along to. I can't recommend this enough (to men or women).

A Bright Light in a Murky World
Far more than boosting typical male values for the sake of preserving macho behavior, Brett has been on a mission to shine a light on maligned virtues like integrity, physical prowess, bravery, determination, individuality, and fidelity. His guests almost always walk that line with him, and provide a dose of sanity and wisdom in a media world thatâs sorely lacking reasonable discussion. Somehow he avoids politics on his show which is a breath of fresh air. Guests offer practical ways to put those virtues into actionâ many times Iâve been able to put into practice the valuable insight from Brettâs guests. The world needs the Art of Manliness! Keep it up.

Great podcast for guys... and gals
An informative and often inspiring podcast. Brett is always prepared and informed on the topic enabling him to ask poignant questions that further illuminate the concepts discussed. This podcast has sparked my curiosity in many topics which have resulted in myself taking real action like reading related books or taking up new hobbies (e.g. Brazilian Jui Jitsu, Smoking meat, barbell/kettlebell/calisthenics training, and many more). His discussions are grounded with strong morals and values. Highly recommend for men (and woman too).

My go-to podcast for years!
AOM podcasts have been my go-to for years! The content is always relevant and fresh. I use this podcast as a resource to dig deeper into subjects that matter to me. If you are looking for edgy, crass, combative, argrumentative or biased dialogue you need to skip AOM. But if you want hear a respectful conversation where the guest is allowed to share their thoughts and provide ideas this is a good spot. My reading list for upcoming year has many of the books featured on these podcasts. Usually the podcasts are around 45 min so these are not meant to dive deep into these topics but provide a sound overview. Brett does a great job with the interviews, he is always prepared and engaged in the content with guests. You can tell he has done is homework and is good at guiding the conversation to the relevant points. The producton quality of the podcasts is high!

Great content
I really enjoy listening. AoM provides rich and applicable content. Almost never disappointed. Brettâs interview style gives direction to the conversation but allows the guest freedom to share what they feel passionate about. These podcasts often provide satisfying summaries of big topics.

Love the Podcast
Highly recommend this podcast, it covers a diverse range of topics, from outdoorsmanship, to history, to fitness and many things in between. Nearly every episode is an interview with an author too, so thereâs lots of chances to learn more about topics you find particularly interesting. Iâve bought a few books based on some of the interviews and have enjoyed the additional information.

Excellent Stuff
I have been reading Brettâs stuff at AOM for years, and his podcast is an extension of the excellent material that has kept me coming back for all this time. An outstanding balance of masculinity for masculinityâs sake on the one hand and critical thinking on the other, with just a dash of humor.

Informative and Entertaining
This is one of my favorite podcasts. Brett is an excellent interviewer; he does much more listening than speaking, and he asks great questions. I love the variety of topics covered. Many times Iâve looked at a title and felt lukewarm about the topic... only to be pleasantly surprised when I listen to the conversation. His guests are always very interesting people, and thereâs typically some sort of actionable advice. The interviews provide great food for thought, and I typically come away with a few tips to make myself a better person, in all aspects of life.

Best Podcast for Men
Brett & Kate have the most relevant podcast for men of all ages. Brett has the best interview style I have ever heard. Brett's interview style is to bring out of the guest that guest's subject matter, not using the guest to reflect his own views. The guests are relvant to men in general, but most would also interest women. There hasn't been a guest that I did not take at least one point that deserves serious consideration. I have subscribed to the podcast for years, maybe even from the begining. You should also check out the AoM website. Filled with more information that is highly interesting. Thank you Brett & Kate!

One of the best podcasts for men that also women enjoy
I have been listening to The Art of Manliness for several years now. It is one of the first podcasts I started listening regularly. A lifetime friend from high school got me into it, mainly for the philosophy topics. I loved all the fitness, health and literature topicsâŠso I became a lifetime fan! My wife has listened along to some episodes during long drives. The most surprising fact was that my now 22 year old daughter, who is studying to be a physical therapist (DPT), is an avid listener as well Kudos to Brett and his team for the great job they continue to do and all the positive influence they have on peopleâs lives

AOM is the gateway to a good, manly life
Iâve listened to the AOM podcast since 2015 and it has been a source of information, inspiration, and a call to action for me in my life. Brett does a wonderful job by actually reading the books/materials of his guests and then engaging with them in Socratic dialogue and Aristotelian analysis to find the essence of the guestâs proposal. This podcast is exactly the kind of discussion the world benefits from and is sure to add value to itâs listeners lives. I know it has for me.

- Move the Body, Heal the MindWhen we think about the benefits of exercise, we tend to think of what it does for our body, making us leaner, stronger, and healthier. But my guest is out to emphasize the powerful effect physical activity has on our brains too, and just how much our bodies and minds are connected. Dr. Jennifer Heisz is a professor, the director of the NeuroFit Lab which studies the effects of exercise on brain health, and the author of Move the Body, Heal the Mind . Today on the show, Jennifer and I first discuss how physical activity can help treat mental disorders. She shares the way that low to moderate intensity exercise can mitigate anxiety, and how short bouts of intense exercise can be used as exposure therapy for treating panic disorders. We also talk about the phenomenon of inflammation-induced depression, and how exercise can alleviate it. And Jennifer shares how exercise can strengthen someone's attempt at sobriety, as well as prevent addiction in the first place. From there, we turn to the way exercise can not only mitigate mental maladies but actually optimize the mind. Jennifer shares how physical activity fights aging, and can enhance your focus and creativity. We discuss how exercise can improve your sleep, how it can be used to shift your circadian clock, and whether it's okay to work out close to your bedtime. - Kit Carson's Epic ExploitsWithin the space for just three decades, monumental episodes of exploration and expedition, politics and violence, including the mapping the Oregon Trail, the acquisition of California, and the Mexican-American and Civil wars, forever changed the history of the United States and the shape of the American West. And one man, an illiterate trapper, scout, and soldier, was there for it all: Kit Carson. In his book Blood and Thunder: The Epic Story of Kit Carson and the Conquest of the American West , author and historian Hampton Sides follows Carson as a through-line in this extraordinary period. Today on the show, Hampton and I discuss how Kit Carson became a living legend through embellished accounts of his heroics, and yet undertook real-life exploits that were nearly as unbelievable as the tall tales told about him. We explore how Carson joined the grizzled fraternity of mountain men in his youth, and the wide array of skills that helped him excel as a trapper. We discuss how Carson then parlayed those skills into becoming a scout on expeditions that took him from St. Louis to California, over the Rocky and Sierra mountains, and all throughout the wild, rugged West. Hampton shares how these expeditions turned Carson into a national celebrity and what this frontiersman thought of his fame. Hampton also unpacks Carsonâs complex relationship with American Indians, and how he respected and adopted the ways of some tribes, but fought against others. We end our conversation with why he decided to become an officer in the Union Army during the Civil War, his initially reluctant and then brutal campaigns against the Navajos, and his legacy.0 comments0
- How to Win Friends and Influence People in the 21st CenturyOver the last year, my 12-year-old son has been doing one challenge every week as a rite of passage and chance to earn a special trip. Some of these challenges have involved reading a book in a week, and the most recent book we gave him to read was How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie. His review? He said it was the best book he's read so far. So a book written almost 90 years ago can still be a favorite of a kid in the 21st century. Talk about some staying power. The advice in How to Win Friends & Influence People, and Dale Carnegie's other classic, How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, is timeless. But to help introduce it to a new audience, my guest, Joe Hart, has recently co-authored the book Take Command , which synthesizes, updates, and adds to the principles of Carnegie's two perennial bestsellers. Joe is the President and CEO of Dale Carnegie & Associates, which continues Carnegie's work in the present day, and we begin our conversation with some background on the guy who kicked off this work back in 1936. We then talk about what principles we can take from How to Stop Worrying and Start Living on developing a positive mindset. From there, we talk about the big overarching principle of How to Win Friends & Influence People, and how you can use it to improve your relationships. We end our conversation with advice on how to live life with more intentionality and meaning. - Advice on Achieving Any Long-Haul DreamIn a world that celebrates overnight success, it's easy to forget that very often, achieving your dreams takes a heck of a long time. My guest knows this all too well. You may know Steven Pressfield as the bestselling author of books like The Legend of Bagger Vance, Gates of Fire, and The War of Art, but as he details in his new memoir, Govt Cheese , it took more than a quarter century for him to become a published novelist. Today on the show, Steven talks about what he learned in that journey, and the many odd jobs, from driving trucks to picking apples, that he took along the way. We discuss the lessons Steven gleaned that apply to achieving any dream, including how to overcome a propensity for self-sabotage, get your ego out of the way, finish what you start, and develop the killer instinct. This is a great, motivating conversation on learning not to "pull the pin" on the important commitments in your life. And we'll explain what that means coming up. - Key Insights From the Longest Study on HappinessStarted in 1938, the Harvard Study of Adult Development represents the longest study on happiness ever conducted. It set out to follow a group of men through every stage of their lives, from youth to old age, to discover what factors lead people to flourish. Here to share some of the insights that have been gleaned from the Harvard Study of Adult Development is Dr. Robert Waldinger, the current director of the project and the co-author of The Good Life: Lessons from the Worldâs Longest Scientific Study of Happiness . Today on the show, Robert explains how the study has affirmed the absolute primacy of relationships in happiness and how to develop the âsocial fitnessâ to make and enrich those vital connections. We discuss what the happily married couples in the study did differently, and why happiness in marriage tends to follow a U-shaped curve which hits its low point in midlife. We talk about how the way you were raised helps set a trajectory for your life, but how itâs also possible to overcome a rough upbringing to become a transitional character in your family. We also discuss the role that friends and work played in the happiness of the men who participated in the study. We end our conversation with what folks in every stage of development â whether youth, midlife, or older age â should focus on to live a flourishing life. - Using Extended Fasting to Heal the BodyIn the last several years, intermittent fasting â only eating for a short window each day â has gotten a lot of attention, particularly for the way it can facilitate weight loss. But as my guest will explain, going longer than a few hours or even a full day without eating also has some striking, potentially even life-changing benefits too, and may be able to heal a variety of health issues. Steve Hendricks is the author of The Oldest Cure in the World: Adventures in the Art and Science of Fasting . He spends the first part of this conversation offering a thumbnail sketch of the history of extended fasting as a medical treatment. From there, we get into what emerging modern science is showing as to how prolonged fasts lasting days or even weeks can prevent and even cure a variety of diseases, from type 2 diabetes to rheumatoid arthritis. We then talk about fasting's effect on cancer, and how it may address mental health issues by offering a metabolic reset. If you're an intermittent faster, you'll be interested to hear why it is you should ideally schedule your eating window for earlier rather than later in the day. - 7 Journaling Techniques That Can Change Your LifeIn my twenties and early thirties, I was a regular journaler. Several years ago, however, I stopped journaling almost entirely because I wasn't getting anything out of it anymore. But my guest has helped me see that my problem wasn't with journaling itself, but that I had gotten into a journaling rut, and he's introduced me to some new ways to journal that have inspired me to get back into the practice. Campbell Walker is an illustrator, animator, podcaster, and YouTuber, as well as the author of Your Head is a Houseboat: A Chaotic Guide to Mental Clarity . Today on the show, Cam shares how journaling transformed his life and what it can do for yours. We discuss why it's helpful to do a journaling brain dump and how to then move beyond that to incorporate different techniques that will help you get greater insight into the problems you're facing and how to solve them. We unpack those techniques, which include how to journal to break mindset, conduct a lifestyle and habits audit, and quell anxiety. We also talk about an experiment Cam did where he only used the social media apps on his phone when he was posting something, and every time he got the itch to check social media for fun, he engaged in something he calls "microjournaling" instead. - Why You Donât Change (But How You Still Can) [ENCORE]Anyone whoâs ever tried to lose weight, curb their temper, quit smoking, or alter any other habit in their lives knows that personal change is hard. Really hard. Most self-help books out there treat people like machines, blitzing past this difficulty and offering mechanical 5-step formulas for changing your life. My guest today says such simplified solutions hugely miss the mark. He argues that if you ever want to change, itâs more fruitful to understand why you donât, than figure why you do, and to understand that, youâve got to go deeper, existential even. His name is Dr. Ross Ellenhorn, and heâs spent his career facilitating the recovery of individuals diagnosed with psychiatric and substance abuse issues. In his latest book, How We Change (And Ten Reasons Why We Donât) , heâs taken what heâs learned in his work and applied it to anyone trying to change their lives. Ross and I begin our conversation with some of those reasons we donât change, including the existential pressure of feeling like youâre solely in charge of making change happen, a dizzying amount of freedom and number of options for what to do with your life, and day-to-day factors which influence our level of motivation. From there we turn to the role of hope and faith in psychology, and how these forces can both boost and restrain your ability to change. We discuss the way a fear of hope can constrain your life, why you sometimes need to embrace staying the same in order to ever change, and the difference between good faith and bad faith. We then discuss the idea that you donât develop hope, but can develop faith, and how you build your faith in yourself through embracing humility and taking small steps. Ross then explains why he doesnât really give advice on how to change, beyond finding the good in a bad habit, but how patience and your social environment can also help. This showâs got some counterintuitive advice that will help you see your struggles differently. - How Testosterone Makes Men, Men [Encore]What creates the differences between the sexes? Many would point to culture, and my guest today would agree that culture certainly shapes us. But sheâd also argue that at the core of the divergence of the sexes, and in particular, of how men think and behave, is one powerful hormone: testosterone. Her name is Dr. Carole Hooven, and sheâs a Harvard biologist and the author of T: The Story of Testosterone, the Hormone That Dominates and Divides Us . Today on the show, Carole explains the arguments that are made against testosteroneâs influence on shaping men into men, and why she doesnât think they hold water. She then unpacks the argument for how testosterone does function as the driving force in sex differences, and how it fundamentally shapes the bodies and minds of males. We delve into where T is made, how much of it men have compared to women, and what historical cases of castration tell us about the centrality of testosterone in male development. We then discuss how T shapes males, starting in the womb, and going into puberty and beyond, before turning to its influence in athletic performance. - The Unexpected Origins of Our Christmas TraditionsWith Christmas coming up, you're likely in the full holiday swing of things â decorating your tree, eating certain foods, listening to particular music, and buying and wrapping gifts. But did you ever stop to think about why it is you're taking part in this slate of often weird-but-wonderful traditions? Brian Earl has traced the backstories of our Christmas traditions in his podcast and book called ChristmasPast . Today on the show, he shares some of those backstories with us, and explains how many of our seemingly fated and timeless traditions actually came about in fluky and fortuitous ways and are a lot more recent than we think. He first unpacks how Christmas went from being a small religious observance to a huge cultural celebration and how our idea of Santa Claus evolved over time, with our current conception of Old St. Nick being less than a century old. We then discuss how it is we ended up taking evergreen trees inside our houses and decorating them, the origins of the most recorded Christmas song in history, why fruitcake became the butt of jokes, and why hardly anyone roasts chestnuts anymore, on an open fire or otherwise. Brian shares what new Christmas traditions he's seeing emerge and which classic ones are going away, and I offer an important PSA to future parents about Elf on the Shelf. We end our conversation with Brian's tips for getting into the Christmas spirit if you haven't been feeling it. - The Affectionate, Ambiguous, and Surprisingly Ambivalent Relationship Between SiblingsFor most people, their siblings will be the longest-lasting relationships of their lives, potentially enduring all the way from birth until past the death of their parents. Marked by both jealousy and conflict and love and loyalty, siblings are also some of our most complicated relationships. While a little over half of people describe their relationships with their siblings as positive, about one-fifth classify them as negative, and a quarter say their feelings about their siblings are decidedly mixed. Here to take us on a tour of the complex landscape of sibling-dom is Geoffrey Greif, a professor of social work and the co-author of the book Adult Sibling Relationships . Today on the show, Geoffrey shares how our brothers and sisters shape us and how our relationship with our siblings changes as we move from childhood to old age. We discuss how the perception of parental favoritism affects the closeness of siblings and how a parent's relationship with their own siblings affects the relationship between their children. Geoffrey explains how most sibling relationships are marked by the three A's â affection, ambiguity, and/or ambivalence â and how the relationship can also become very distant or outright severed. We end our conversation with Geoffrey's advice on developing a good relationship between your children and reconnecting with your own siblings. - Why Homer MattersEven though the legendary poet Homer wrote the Iliad and Odyssey thousands of years ago, my guest would say that these epic poems are just as relevant and significant today, and even represent a kind of scripture. His name is Adam Nicolson, and heâs the author of Why Homer Matters . Today on the show, Adam makes the case that the Iliad is really the story of a collision between a more rooted, civilized way of life, represented by the character of Hector, and a nomadic, honor-bound gang ethos, represented by Achilles. We talk about how this collision birthed the character of Odysseus â who was both great warrior and subtle diplomat â and the whole Greek consciousness. And we discuss how that consciousness is also our consciousness, as weâre still wrestling with the warring impulses, dramas and dilemmas, and big questions of human experience Homer gave life. - Befriending WinterSome people dread winter with its cold weather, long dark nights, and the downcast mood these elements often induce. But my guest would say it's possible to befriend winter, and truly enjoy the rhythms and opportunities that are unique to this season. Micah Mortali is the founder of the Kripalu School of Mindful Outdoor Leadership and an instructor and retreat leader who uses the teaching of ancestral skills to help people develop greater mindfulness and connection with nature. Today on the show, Micah explains why we should consider winter "the night of the year" and how befriending the season involves aligning yourself with its call toward rest and reflection. We first discuss exploring the outdoor world during winter and how learning survival skills like shelter building and animal tracking can help you spend more time in nature, restore your sense of well-being, and simply feel more alive. In the second half of our conversation, we talk about how to improve your interior life during winter, both in the literal sense of making your house more cozy and in the metaphorical sense of turning inward. Micah explains why you should spend one night a week pretending you live off the grid, embrace the power of firelight, and may want to wait until March to make your New Year's resolutions. We end our conversation with why you might want to read The Road this winter. - How Polio Made a PresidentOf the dozens of men who have served as US president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt had a particularly close connection with the citizens he served. The only president elected to four terms, Americans hung FDR's picture up in their homes, wrote him thousands of letters, and regularly tuned in to listen to his fireside chats. My guest would say that much of the depth, gravitas, and empathy Roosevelt was able to convey to the country was not something inborn, but in fact grew out of a tragedy which befell him at the age of 39: the contraction of polio. Jonathan Darman is the author of Becoming FDR: The Personal Crisis That Made a President , and today on the show, he paints a portrait of what Roosevelt was like before he got polio, and how, despite charm and ambition, he was considered shallow and a political lightweight. We then discuss what it was like for FDR to get polio, what he did during years of bedridden convalescence, and how the disease and his rehabilitation changed him. We talk about how the influence of FDR's polio experience can be seen in the way he guided the country through the Depression and WWII, and the lesson in realistic optimism he offers us today. - The Existential in Red Dead Redemption 2People sometimes ask me what I think of video games. I think that, in moderation, they're a fine source of the kind of passive entertainment we all need little doses of in our lives. But for me personally, I rarely play video games because there's just too much other stuff I'd rather do instead. There is one notable exception to my ambivalence towards video games, however. A game which I played for hours with thorough enjoyment and zero regret: Red Dead Redemption 2. It's a video game that's more immersive and story-like than most others, and even gets you reflecting on the existential layers of life. Here to discuss those deeper layers of Red Dead Redemption 2 with me is Patrick Stokes, a professor of philosophy and fellow fan of the game. We combine two of my favorite things â Red Dead Redemption 2 and the philosophy of Soren Kierkegaard â in a conversation on the existential themes you can find in the game like nostalgia, freedom, choice and consequences, and the certain uncertainty of death. - The Real Rules of PowerMost leadership advice says the same thing: to be a good leader, you need to be generous, humble, and authentic. My guest, professor of organizational behavior Jeffrey Pfeffer, would say that kind of advice may make us feel good and represent the world as we'd like it to be, but it doesn't actually work in the world as it really is. What the research shows does work is what he lays out in his book: 7 Rules of Power: Surprising-âBut TrueâAdvice on How to Get Things Done and Advance Your Career . People often have negative associations with power, but Jeffrey would argue that power, and many of the techniques involved in getting it, are morally neutral, and can be used for ill or for good. So if you have a worthy aim and want to grow your influence and move up in your job, you have to get comfortable going after something that may make you uncomfortable. Jeffrey shares how to do that as we take a quick and dirty dive into the real rules of power. - The Brain Energy Theory of Mental IllnessMental illnesses of all kinds are on the rise, and yet we seem no closer to being able to treat them effectively. We're only able to treat the symptoms of mental illness, but aren't often able to put the illness into remission because its root cause has been a mystery. My guest, however, believes he knows exactly what the root cause of mental illness is, and thus how to finally resolve it for good. His name is Dr. Chrisopther Palmer, and he's a Harvard psychiatrist and the author of Brain Energy: A Revolutionary Breakthrough in Understanding Mental Health . Today on the show, Chris unpacks his theory of mental illness, which basically comes down to this: if your brain cells aren't getting enough energy, they're not going to function properly. He explains how numerous and seemingly diverse mental illnesses, from anxiety and depression to ADHD and alcoholism, actually all have a common pathway: metabolic disorders. While we typically think of metabolism as related to the physical body, it also greatly affects the mind, and Chris explains how you can have the kind of metabolic problems that cause mental illness even if you're not overweight. Chris then shares how certain lifestyle changes, like switching to a ketogenic diet, may be able to completely cure mental illness. - Overcome the Comfort CrisisOur world has never been more convenient and comfortable. With just a few taps of our fingers, we can order food to our door, access endless entertainment options, and keep our climate at a steady 72 degrees. We don't have to put in much effort, much less face any risk or challenge, in order to sustain our daily lives. In some ways, this quantum leap in humanity's comfort level is a great boon. But in other ways, it's absolutely killing our minds, bodies, and spirit. My guest says it's time to reclaim the currently-hard-to-come-by but truly essential benefits of discomfort. His name is Michael Easter, and he's a writer, editor, and professor, and the author of The Comfort Crisis: Embrace Discomfort to Reclaim Your Wild, Happy, Healthy Self . Michael first shares how his experience with getting sober helped him discover the life-changing potential of doing hard things, before digging into what fleeing from discomfort is doing to our mental and physical health. We then discuss the Japanese idea of misogis, which involves taking on an epic outdoor challenge, and why Michael decided to do a misogi in which he participated in a month-long caribou hunt in the backcountry of Alaska. Michael shares what he learned from the various challenges he encountered during his misogi â including intense hunger, boredom, solitude, and physical exertion â as well as what research can teach all of us about why we need to incorporate these same kinds of discomforts into our everyday lives. - The Future is AnalogIn 2016, David Sax wrote a book called Revenge of the Analog, which made the case that even as we marched towards an ever more digital future, we were increasingly returning to real, tangible things â choosing vinyl records over streaming, brick and mortar bookstores over Amazon, and in-person conversations over Skype. In the intervening years, the pandemic hit, and, David argues, truly reaffirmed his case, which he lays out in his latest book: The Future Is Analog: How to Create a More Human World. Today on the show, David explains how the pandemic gave us a trial run of an entirely digital future, and made us realize we really donât want it, or at least, we donât want all of it. We discuss the drawbacks that came from going virtual with work, school, shopping, socializing, and religious worship, and discuss how weâre not as smart when we donât use our embodied cognition, how information is different from education, and why there are few things quite as awful as a Zoom cocktail party.
