Great show…but why….
Love the show, why do you run a commercial/intro fully 8 minutes in the middle chapters? Do you think after 6 chapters I’d forgotten what I was listening to? Or is that done to benefit your Alzheimer’s affected listeners ? Still a great show, just an odd marketing technique….

Poor performance
The story is interesting and I’m thoroughly curious about what happens but Imperative entertainment and the show’s producers/additional narrator is too frustrating to continue. Instead of moving on to the next episode, or even silence, I’m thrown into a preview of another show. The secondary narrators all sound like AI. Pretty frustrating.

Fascinating and compelling.
I loved this story. Jack did some careless and destructive things in this life. He’s the first to say so. This podcast - and Jack’s honesty - really allow the listener to experience a tiny bit of the intensity, the struggle, the victories, and the losses of this man’s unique life experience. Loved it.

Meh
Jack Barsky sounds like a terrible person tbh. Not cuz he’s a spy, I’m cool w that. But because he’s this crazy narcissistic douche who thinks I care about his personal life—I don’t. That’s the problem w this podcast. It’s a very cool subject ruined by its lack of direction. There’s NOT A DROP OF ESPIONAGE ITS ALL ABOUT HIS DUMB BORING PERSONAL LIFE STAY AWAY IF YOU LIKE INTRIGUE CUZ THERES NONE OF THAT HERE

Needs to be a television miniseries or movie
I served in the U.S. Army in the 1980s on the East German Border in the Fulda Gap. We had encounters with Soviet Military Liason Mission (SMLM). I thoroughly enjoyed this. It takes me back to the heady days of the end of the Cold War. This needs to go to TV or the big screen. Get it to Netflix ASAP.

Fascinating podcast!
I've really been enjoying this podcast. I.love hearing the story of going from a regular person, to a spy and then what he has to do to get into the US and disappear. No you won't hear spy secrets but as you listen, imagine how your life would be uprooted, imagine scenerios where you have to play it cool when your not! I just love it.

Binged the whole series within 24 hrs. Fascinating & very well-presented. Most interesting aspect was to hear about Jack’s emotional evolution as he got older. His frank honesty makes a compelling contrast with his previous life of subterfuge. P.S. Really interesting to read all these reviews! Different perspectives, but all make valid points.

The documentary could’ve been told many fewer episodes.
There was a lot of repetition in each episode. The story was fascinating, but in the end I didn’t like Jack Barsky. He didn’t take responsibility for any of his children until Chelsie. It was pretty obvious that he was egocentric and selfish.

Sounds like a German
Agree with the commenter who states the obvious, this man has a strong German accent mixed with a New York accent, like many immigrants. No Native American would ever believe this man was an American. Very little is believable without addressing this obvious lie. What did this man actually do? It sounds like wakes around malls, museums, got a second degree, had a bunch of sex. Sounds great, but when does the actual spying happen? I’m seven episodes in and the worst this guy has done is commit identity fraud.

I absolutely loved this podcast! I was hooked from the beginning and it stayed interesting to the end! Some people have complained that there weren’t enough details about his “spy” work… but this isn’t a Hollywood film! Obviously he can’t share sensitive details that only the government should know. Also, people who are upset that Jack was purely self-serving in making his decisions… you can’t become a spy unless you’re able to lie to people constantly, regardless of the pain it causes. That’s the point. Anyway, ignore the haters! This show is amazing and provides a fascinating glimpse into the KGB world and life of an ex-spy.

The Agent
Jack Barsky, hiding in plain sight, a compassionate, genteel man, risked his life for years. He does a great job of reliving & enlightening ALL of us to the outrageous & real-life spying going on all around us (and the World). Moscow lies; sends him a radio message; “Order of the Red Banner”. “You’re cover has been blown. You’re in severe danger”. Logic didn’t work. Never does. The KGB doesn’t hear from Jack. .. RIVETING. The Agent Wins
Good story, well told. Very interesting for a child of the 60s but I’m disheartened by the fact that this man got away with both spying and defecting and both governments bent over backwards to assure his comfort and that of his families. Jack really pulled one over on everyone. Jack defrauded his wives, his work, his government / especially the immigration system. Also, we never heard what secrets he stole. Major hole in the story.

Very Good
I really enjoyed it. Jack is a complicated character, and there were moments that I felt no sympathy for him as our protagonist. Other moments he was acutely insightful about his life. The production was a bit hinky, there were a couple times it almost sounded like sound clips were looped or repeated.

Meh.
The podcast, despite a fascinating premise, isn’t exactly all that fascinating nor very interesting. It’s mostly an old man, whose glory days are decades behind him, constantly bragging about how great he was. Every woman wanted him, at least according to him. He spends the first three episodes telling us about how intelligent he is, insinuating that he has a genius level IQ, yet his vocabulary is that of a man with an average IQ - 100 to perhaps 110 at best. Perhaps he was a real spy for the KGB, or perhaps he’s just full of himself and has a mouth full of flannel. Unless the CIA, NSA, and the FBI tell me otherwise I’m just not buying his story.

Where are the editors
An interesting story but really should have been a 5- or 6-episode series. Way too much detail that is just stultifying, especially when the kids start talking, and also some of the scenarios are repetitive. The kids’ and spouses’ experiences are unique and insane, but they don’t add much to the story. Do we really need multiple episodes which are essentially the reaction to Jack’s unmasking? They all say the same thing. Also, no one seems to press Jack on some of his claims. How many times can a man say there was “no emotional attachment” before the interviewer should realize, there is clearly an emotional attachment.

Not buying it
No US American would take this guy, with this accent, for a native speaker from upstate NY or anywhere else. There is no way he passed the way this show assumes he did on any level of US society. He’s German. He sounds German, though his English is impressive overall. That is only one of the many inconsistence here, but it is the most flagrant lie. As for the podcast itself, do we have to hear your Ronald Reagan intro two or three times every episode? We get it. You think he’s a hero based on Episode 6. But you bias is too naked, Reagan is a hero and Obama talks about baseball. Charming of you! Guess there is an agenda here…

Having grown up in West Germany during the Cold War- this story offered an incredible perspective. Too Arrogant
Jack Barsky is so arrogant in this podcast that it’s difficult to consider him a reliable narrator. The way he treated women that he was personally involved with is absolutely appalling. Was he really as great as he says that he was? Was this podcast fact checked at all? The only viewpoint that seems to be included is his, and he’s so pleased to boast about his accomplishments and how little he cared for the women in his life. It’s absolutely nauseating.

Good but too long
Great subject. Very interesting but things are stretched a little too long. I’m sure this is by design but the first two episodes should be cut in half and combined. Backstory is valuable but too much backstory makes it boring. The intro is way too long. I’m sure a lot of work went into it but this intro would be better suited for a tv show.

Enjoyable story devoid of spying details
This was a fun story, well presented and produced. It delves into Jack Barsky the man while completely tip toeing around what he did to spy against the United States. Barsky is a self described elite agent. I will give him credit as he divulged nothing related to how he communicated sensitive information to the KGB and they also omit virtually everything he debriefed to the FBI. Ultimately, Barsky is a failed spy, a failed son, a failed husband and a failed father. He seems validated because he told the truth and took accountability for his misdeeds. His is not a legacy an honorable man would want for himself or his children. So it goes.

Appalled
So we are to ignore the damage this man did as a spy?? I’m disgusted that I wasted my time listening to this man and the FBI and CIA try to vindicate themselves and the damage they have done. Worse is that he is given American citizenship with all the benefits when by his own duplicitous mouth he claims to have shared far reaching secrets with a government that is our enemy. We welcome this guy with open arms but keep or, desperate immigrants and refugees out? This podcast disgusts me.

Absolutely by far the best podcast I’ve ever had the pleasure to listen to
The title pretty much says everything I want to say But apparently I want to say more. Not once, if how it was told or if it’s just my inner feelings, did I feel or think of Jack as anything but a human being acting on or reacting to life situations as he thought best for him. Yes at times he was selfish, but what does life teach us nowadays but to take care of ourselves. I admire him for his honesty (which is kind of funny or ironic since he was acting as a US citizen) but again that was an action/ decision that he thought best. good God it was just the best. I could not wait for every episode to come out. It also provoked some self reflection on my own part and dig deep on the importance of family, forgiveness and acceptance thank you to everyone that put their 150% into making this production a five star listen. ….. This was nothing but an extended apology from a pretentious, amoral, self-absorbed philanderer. He continues to dupe and con people. Never believe him or any of his family members. Pretty dull overall - needs better editing
This podcast requires a paid subscription, so you’d think the production values would be top notch. That is not the case, unfortunately. What should be a story full of intrigue, danger and spy craft instead comes across as dull and amateurish due to poor editing. There are grammatical errors in the narration and it’s delivered in a flat monotone, sucking the energy out of the production. The narrator frequently repeats what was just said by Jack Barsky word for word, and there are big unexplained gaps in the narrative that left me thinking I missed an episode when I didn’t. This could have been a lot more interesting in the hands of a skilled editor and a professional voice actor as the narrator.

Probably worth the listen
I’m a spy nut and my gosh this is an interesting window into the late 20th century tension between communist east and the free west. His stories about being recruited are interesting and illuminating, but as my mom would say, “Jack is happy with how Jack turned out”. Way too much time spent on his standing in the community and how well he did in school. I don’t know why the podcast organizers saw fit to include that. That’s 10 minutes of my life I can’t get back. I do know why Jack included it. It feathers his nest

Fabulous Storytelling!
I am a voracious consumer of podcasts but I have never left a review before. This is storytelling at it’s finest. This is a fascinating look at the life of a former KGB spy. I appreciate his candor, even though others have labeled it “ego.” I suspect that a person has to be supremely confident to be selected for his position as a spy and it probably served him well in being successful in completely integrating into a new country while still providing info for the KGB. I was impressed with his self reflection in later episodes as he acknowledged some of the poor choices he made, the people he hurt and the ripples it created.

Not a lot of spying for a spy
I’m not sure if he just couldn’t reveal much of the work he did as a spy, but the actual details about his life as a spy are rather scant. The beginning is interesting as you learn about his life in Germany and Moscow, but less interesting towards the end. And, TBH, I found Jack to be a rather self-serving and self-absorbed narrator. Why’d he become a spy? To travel. Why’d he leave one woman? She cramped his lifestyle. Etc. Etc. I’m not convinced much of what he did was for love of country or love for another person but for love of self. And I think he might even agree so perhaps he’s self aware at least. But I struggle to listen to hours of someone who is so hyper focused on self.

This is not my usual genre of listening for my hour commute to and from work but I heard a preview and it mentioned the KGB. What is the KGB? I’m a late 80’s baby and I’ve had my head in the sand for quite awhile now so I figured why not? I genuinely love hearing about other peoples life experiences and how they got where they are today. What a narcissist
In all I’ve read and seen, I’ve never encountered a spy as obsessed with themselves and their story and past as this one is. Always ‘the best’ the ‘most talented’ the ‘light of life’ etc. I’ve started and stopped listening multiple times because it seems like a good story but if I wanted to listen to someone talk about how great they are I’d rewatch interviews with ‘that former guy.’ A+ production.

Good interview with The Agent but not a good narrator
The story as told by Barsky in the interview is very good. And I’m really enjoying the story because of it. But the narrator sounds like he’s reading from a script and is slogging his way through it. Sometimes I wonder why when there is good material like this that these companies don’t get a person to narrate who knows what they’re doing? Recently I heard a podcast called, “My Fugitive” - similar kind of story and the woman who narrated it was terrific. A great storytelling voice that was just captivating. It was such a relief listening to her when so many stories are narrated by people who are too hard to listen to. That’s the problem here. It would be good if podcast companies thought more about trying to be less amateurish and hire people like that My Fugitive lady who knows what she’s doing in narration.

- Cover Up: Ministry of SecretsCover Up is a series of investigative stories that take us on a journey into a world of subterfuge and secrecy - a world where the truth is concealed under a blanket of lies. From corrupt individuals to clandestine institutions, Cover Up exposes deceit, deception and the abuse of power.
