Great show but could use a bit of editing
I love this podcast. I really appreciate the host giving this platform to real, everyday people to just tell their story. He’s so genuinely interested too. Many other paranormal podcasts annoy me because the host are cracking jokes the whole time. My only gripe is that some editing would help a lot. While it’s definitely refreshing to hear the guests tell their stories totally unfiltered, some of them aren’t the best speakers and have a tendency to repeat themselves over and over or go on tangents. It makes listening kind of a chore sometimes. I’m not even talking about episode length, the longer the better. Just keep the stories on point please. Anyway, in general this podcast is really fantastic. I love the intimacy and the way they take the subject seriously.

Love These Stories!
I love the old historical stories even if they’re not about the paranormal. I also like the interviews with people with interesting stories. Your BEST show ever was 316 The Foundling with Diane! Riddle me this y’all…How can y’all ever possibly top that one?! Keep ‘em coming, love it.

This podcast is great and that’s why I gave it five stars. You hear a real story from the person it happened to. Other podcasts have fake stories with no interviews and yet people listen to that mess.

I love this show!
A great podcast that covers paranormal topics, folklore, and interesting history. Two wonderful hosts with a great dynamic and recurring guests that never disappoint. A show that asks the important questions. How do the monastic view these phenomena? Are deer the new owls? Just when is it okay to wear yellow camo?

One of my top podcasts!
I love Tim and Alison. They are such a cool and interesting couple. The best thing about the hosts and podcast is that you feel like Tim and Alison are relating to the listeners on a personal level, like we are all sitting around a campfire chatting. I truly appreciate both Tim and Alison and am not ashamed to say that my days/weeks are more enriched because of them.

Hooked
I can’t remember if I had written a review for SF before, I know I wanted to, so just in case I never got around to doing it or in case I wasn’t clear enough on just how much I love this podcast, here goes another (or maybe the first) review. Tim and Allison are amazing together, Their voices are nice and soothing and remind me of warm cozy winter days (which I love), all the episodes are so different and I truly enjoy how Tim asks the questions I would , the on-site episodes (cicadas or not) are awesome. I am always in awe of how much Tim and Allison do, what with answering emails, and social media, managing the Etsy shop, curating photographs, making music, all the art work and putting out at least a show per week, Just wow! Have been listening for a few years and plan to do so always. Love your content, love your music, love you both. Suscribe people!!!!

Favorite Podcast
I listen to a lot of different paranormal/Bigfoot podcasts, the more mainstream as well. I stumbled on this one from Sasquatch Chronicles, so glad I did! I love that it’s a diff format each episode or every other…keeps it fresh. Love the on sight episodes. The music also grew on me, it took a little minute just because it’s not a genre I would listen to otherwise. But I love how committed Tim is to the podcast and the extra Patreon episodes are fantastic. I love Tim’s voice it’s so soothing, and Allison adds the kind of humor and wit I enjoy. They’re just great, so multi-talented…I could listen to them talk about anything all day to be honest lol. I’m constantly on their Etsy store, I just can’t get enough. It really is unlike the rest, it keeps me sane.

Distracting One Sided Commentary
An entertaining podcast, sometimes with one sided commentary regarding events or people in the history of the US. As is the case often today, events and actions are viewed with a lens in today’s terms and not in the times in which they occurred. In Episode 241 a commentary remark “the evils of capitalism run amok” is made without factual support and is superfluous to the story. Another remark about W A Clark and his corrupt political actions are referred to as “this is so American and shady”. So American? How so? Americans have the monopoly on corrupt politicians? Hardly. At least a dozen banana republics and every major country on the world stage have politicians that use bribery and manipulation to get power. It’s hardly a trait that may be typically attributed to “Americans” as implied by the remark “so American”. The sophomoric trend to casually bash the US and view its history with an academic’s one sided lens is getting old and trite. It definitely takes away from the story telling.

From a skeptics perspective
I started listening to paranormal shows (coast) for the same reason people go to the zoo, to be entertained by the odd and unfamiliar. I still don’t believe most of this stuff but man, I really enjoy this podcast. It is a laidback session of late night talk that’s reminiscent of telling ghost stories in my middleschool years. Tim and Alison have great chemistry and I must say, Tim’s a talented dude. His artwork, writing, and music are all stellar. Keep at it Strange Familiar

Flannel Man
This was a good show at the outset and Tim rode Seriah’s coattails to get a decent sized audience but the stories have gotten way far out and ridiculous as time has passed. There’s no way there’s any type of vetting process at this point. I respect paranormal podcasts that have a skeptic around to balance the woo-woo, flannel man? In Tim’s world the truth is completely objective. Just label it as fiction and be done with it Tim.

Just Wonderful
I’m trying to figure out how to explain what I love about this podcast. The host is delightful: intelligent, compassionate and entertaining. His wife cohosts and she’s funny, knowledgeable and offers a gentle counterpoint as an open minded skeptic. There’s a sense of community and curiosity that I enjoy and the stories told are compelling. Overall, this paranormal podcast is deeply rooted in history and has its own flavor that keeps me returning to it for the ideas and the way they are presented.

I could listen to this podcast 12 hours a day. I especially enjoy the “weird history” when you and Allison talk about a topic in detail. Real stories from regular people of weird spooky stuff
Really enjoying this podcast especially as a fellow Pennsylvania resident. The topics covered are really interesting and I enjoy the long-form interviews; the host is a great listener and seems really genuine. This is the kind of show that feels like you’re hanging out with a neighbor just talking about strange things they’ve experienced, it’s a laid back and small town feel which I like. I especially like when they record the interviews onsite of where a sighting occurred, so cool!

One of my favorites but...
If it’s possible to run the ads only at the beginning and end, please do. Interrupting the show with ads is jarring and counterintuitive to the otherwise calm and low-key atmosphere. Now that ads play in the middle of the episodes, I have stopped listening as often and just reach for the Patreon feed instead. I don’t mind ads, but where they’re placed can make or break it.

The perfect paranormal interview podcast
I listen to a lot of paranormal podcasts and my biggest pet peeve is when the hosts seem doubtful or disinterested by their guests or callers but this is not that. The hosts are so genuine, intrigued and insightful on every subject they tackle plus the mellow atmosphere of the show really makes it easy to listen to so I couldn’t recommend this podcast enough to any paranormal fan out there. P.s. Thanks for the great show

Stop pretending
This guy needs to stop pretending that he has been abducted, its pathetic. Also he could make his episodes much shorter and dense by something called editing, stop beating a dead horse. Worst podcast ever. Only Tim would write a book on something he has never seen or experienced (bigfoot). “The perfect puppy”, LOL. How desperate are you? Get a real job Tim. Keep Allison off. Tim is a horrible host and a scam artist.

Like , you know like
I have been listening to several shows. There’s an annoyance that I must report; the guests, to wit, young females seem to have an inability to speak cogently. They misuse the word “LIKE “. It is used in about 70% of the sentences. This can be heard in episode 210. And another “Oatmeal man”. I do not blame the guests. They are doing their best, but they are lousy guests. The producers are at fault. Pre interview please. I listened to about 10 minutes and could take no more. It was similar to having to endure a gaggle of 17 year olds. Enough

Intriguing topics and endearing hosts
Some of the wacky negative reviews are more telling of how miserable people are than a reflection of the program itself. When reviews turn into personal attacks it is nothing but noise. This show has grown on me more and more and more over time. It just keeps getting better, which is hard work! I appreciate it.

Good show,but...
Perhaps, the wife could find her own gig... When the show is good-it’s great, but the wife interrupts with unwarranted observation & commentary, that is distracting & annoying! On site shows are boring and silly. When the show sticks to it’s original format,” knocks it out of the park”! I say all this: with not cruel intentions, but constructive criticism. Would love to see the show be the consistent great-it has the potential to be !

Very interesting and entertaining
Strange Familiars is one of my favorite podcasts and in fact, is part of why I started doing my own podcasts. The hosts, Timothy and Allison both have beautiful voices, which makes listening to whatever they present even better than it already is. What I love most is the folkloric, mythpoetic vibe to the show, which is enhanced by the careful writing and smoothly voiced narration. What really sets off that mythic, fairy-folk atmosphere, however, is the creepy original music written by Timothy and presented either solo or with his band, Stone Breath. Using instruments familiar to American folk music such as banjoes and mandolins played in an American Primitive sort of style that sounds as old as the Appalachian mountains, Timothy sets off his playing with lyrics derived from the dreams and nightmares that lurk in the dark hills and hollers of that region. His voice is the perfect vehicle to tell the stories of his songs. This all said, the stories he and Allison and their guests tell are fascinating and diverting. Often creepy, sometimes wise, now and again laugh aloud funny, and sometimes touching---they most often at all are all of the above rolled into one. A lovely podcast, well worth the listen.

Learning to Understand
I never write reviews for things, but reading some of these have left me stumped. Sometimes our human perspectives differ so much, it’s alarming. These hosts are first and foremost, respectful of anyone who contacts them to share a story. Now whether or not that story is dead-on truthful, slightly embellished in the telling, or completely fabricated - none of us can know! So to take the approach of listening to someone, believing their story, and being courteous and empathetic is not only perfectly acceptable - it’s PREFERABLE, it’s way too rare, and that seems so obvious to me, I struggle with seeing it another way. Never have I heard them treat people with ANY experience in a disrespectful or with condescension. Not once. I think constructive criticisms are helpful; but if you just don’t like the show, don’t listen. It’s not essential that you announce your dislike to the universe and make mean-spirited judgment calls. It’s just unkind. Be kind, dammit. Good work, Tim, Alison & Everyone at SF.

Strange Familiars is hands down my favorite podcast. I appreciate the research Tim and Alison put into the show. I always come away with a new perspective, piece of history I never knew, and/or a new, ever changing view of The Other. Tim’s interview style is genuine, thoughtful and kind. And if you’re already a fan of Strange Familiars but you’re not a patron yet, you’re really missing out! There’s so much extra content for patrons...quality episodes, not just something thrown together. Thank you for all of the hard work on this show...it doesn’t go unnoticed!

Pinnacle of Paranormal Podcasts
I’ve been listening to Tim since the beginning even before he hosted his own podcast when he was a frequent guest on Where Did The Road Go. Strange Familiars quickly and to this day has become my go-to podcast and always my first listen as soon as a new episode is up. Unlike some hosts who ask questions only to answer them themselves first, taint the interviewees with their bias, ask leading questions or just plain act goofy, non-professional and less than serious, Tim Renner is the consummate host because he’s not just interviewing people, he’s on the journey with them. He’s done the footwork, the research and the study. His open minded approach to The Other and the possible interconnectedness of the various phenomenon is refreshing and incredibly interesting. Tim’s interview style is smooth and friendly. He let’s the subjects tell their stories in their own words. I’m sure it’s as soothing to them as it is listening to it. His research methods and thoroughness are a huge bonus. He knows his stuff and is prepared for every interview. I can’t stress enough how interesting this podcast is. I’m ashamed to say I’m not a patreon of this podcast, but that will be changing soon because the content I’m missing out on is gnawing at me to hear more and more. Strange Familiars is a podcast I frequently recommend and thoroughly enjoy.

Way too skeptical
These two hosts stumble over each other’s non belief to the point that they insult many experiencers and they show, ultimately, that they can dismiss anything away at any time. These two are way too whimsical and make a mockery of any number of subjects that they choose to discuss.

Engrossing and relaxing
Tim’s attention to detail in this podcast shows. The music (which is Tim’s) is fantastic and well-placed, the on-site episodes are fascinating, and the historic episodes are well-researched. I appreciate the on-site sounds of birds, branches, gravel, etc. There’s a great mix of creepy, scary, odd, and occasionally sad topics. All of the guests (and of course Tim) are wonderful and the dynamic between them always enriches the podcast. I find the overall mood to be quite soothing - one of the rare podcasts that provides great content and a chance to be gently transported elsewhere.

Dark Beauty
I whole-heartedly agree with the review by ElizabethanE: there is a gentleness about Tim that pervades his every show, every interview, every word, and in fact every interaction on his show. He brings a balance of kindness and intelligence to his topics, and a depth and originality to his music. This is a show that focuses on what I want: the weird and the wonderful--not conflict and cacophony. In this way, he stands apart from many other podcast hosts in this genre. I also appreciate his openness about his MS, since I am a listener who also has MS, and I am grateful that he is open and earnest about it without being despairing. Wonderful podcast.

paranormal podcasts seem to either dive too deep or not deep enough and this one strikes a nice balance. good production quality but retains its DIY charm. Local focus Deep connections
Who knew Central Pennsylvania was spook central? Strange phenomenon is often presented without regard to time and place, which is a grave error, nothing happens in a void, but in a place that often has a long history of strangeness if one bothered to find out and they do. By narrowly focusing on a specific region this podcast is able to go very deep into many mysteries—bigfoot, little people, ufo’s and of course ghostly lumberjacks.

Great podcast, one little issue
Y’all are awesome. So informative and well researched and you sight your sources so well. Only issue was too much with the sound effects, it makes picking a good volume difficult cause one minute everything is fine then y’all do that weird static before reading the news articles and it just makes me cringe at loud volumes.

Great spooky podcast without the theatrics
This podcast is really nicely done. Less is more sometimes and this podcast is nice on the ears without all the theatrics of a deep moody voice and over the top ways of trying to discredit the listeners stories! Host is gentle and listens, no fanfare! You can tell he listens to the calls & stories and isn’t trying to come up with a “excuse” or way to debunk their own experiences while he’s listening - it’s refreshing ❤️

Been a fan for over a year and Still enchants me
From the moment I heard Stone Breath’s opening I knew I was gonna love this show. The tree image and the music really makes you feel like you’re getting lost in a foggy forest ready to search for answers. My favorite episodes are the ones that focus on lesser known cryptids and history or the ones with expert interviews etc. This podcast has inspired my artwork and I proudly wear my mothman Strange Familiars shirt and people are always so intrigued and I’m happy to share this listening experience! One day I hope to submit my own encounters but until then I’m a loving listener. Thank you.

Obsessed, healthily!
I am really, really picky about podcasts. I don’t mean to insult others, but it’s really hard to get me engaged or interested. A long time friend recommended this podcast, and I randomly agreed. Unlike myself, usually. I waited to write a review until I had listened to a bunch of these. I can now say I am obsessed with Strange Familiars. What I love is how Timothy is a skeptic. He is so intelligent. So humble and talented. I recommend starting with the “Kapre” episode if you’re new! 13/10 **chefs kiss**

One of my favorite podcasts
This podcast is slowly becoming my favorite podcast. I have a few others that I like but me being from Allentown Pennsylvania I’m liking the strange stories and folklore coming out of Pennsylvania. The fact that I’m within driving distance from where some of the interviews take place make me want to explore and see some of these areas. Keep up the good work on the podcast 👍👍

“That’s Really Interesting”
This is by far my favorite podcast. Love the concept of going on location (e.g., Pandemonium). The only gripe I have is Tim’s speech impediment. Somehow when he says “That’s terrifying. Let’s get the hell out of here”...it comes out as “That’s really Interesting.” You’re a wild man, Tim. Keep up the great work.

The Best!
I LOVE this podcast. Tim has such a great voice/tone, relaxing to listen to. His interviews are always intresting and he lets the person being interviewed tell their own story without much interuption to break up their flow. I really love the on-site stuff the best. Live audio of spooky happening are just great. And he does a superb job of cleaning up the audio so it's not hard to listen to. His thoughts about the paranormal are insightful and can make you think about things differently. This is one of the few podcast I'm a patrion for and it's totally worth it for the extra episode. Highly recommend!

Not the Same Ol Same Old
This show is not just another rehash of stories those with any interest in The paranormal have heard countless times. The host allows experiencers to tell their stories in their on words, giving a much more personal feel to each, and he is very personable and this quality is apparent in his conversation with his guests. The short of it, it is a refreshing experience.

Amazing people making an amazing podcast
I love this podcast. I’m subscribed to over 150 podcasts. Of those I am a patron of only 5. This is on of those 5. Timothy finds interesting people to interview or he tells their stories. He is a good interviewer and asks real questions about the guests experience. His Wife is an occasional addition to the show and she is just as good. She brings a little bit more rational to the show. Because sometimes we need a little rational thinking. Both of them have great voices to listen to and take the subject at hand seriously. It’s Refreshing to hear serious and sometimes funny conversation about the paranormal. While many podcasts are trying too hard to be funny strange familiars takes a real look at the strange side of the world we live in.

I'll admit that the laid back style and even delivery took a while to appreciate, but not long. Pristine podcast in all regards!
I was introduced to Strange Familiars from Timothy's collaborations with Where Did The Road Go podcast. Strange Familiars is such a treat. Very thorough research and presenting edgy and interesting hidden history (The Broken Circle episodes, William of the Fiery Flowers, for example ). Timothy and Alison explore all aspects of the paranormal - spirits, spooky folklore, cryptids, just to name a few. I love how organically and respectfully they interview their guests and honor their stories. And I think that's a huge theme of the podcast - honoring whatever they're talking about and presenting it in an accessible and authentic way for the audience. Just a very professional and well produced show. Also: the wonderful artwork and music is all original!!

I'm in LOVE with a strange familiar
Maybe I'm partial as I too come from rural PA (Monroe County) and have been obsessed with storytelling, mythos, and the paranormal, but I feel so at home with this podcast. Nothing feels like it's ever meant to be highfalutin or know-it-all. In fact I enjoy the first episode is peeling away false Urban legends to find the real-life sad horror at the core. At the same time the love and respect of the subject shines through. Hope to send some of my own tales in soon. Cant wait to finish the backlog! (also I wanna say I too know the 7 Gates of Hell Urban Legend and can confirm the 'drive over the 5 right bridges in the right order' to find the doors part of the myth)

Haunting Atmosphere
When I listened to this podcasts first few episodes I was entranced- immediately I was transported to a world of misty secluded roads, old ghosts, and roaming unclassifiable creatures. Hearing this podcast made me want to visit PA and see the landscape that these stories come from. Timothy is very genuine and cares so much about the topic- it’s refreshing to have a host of a paranormal podcast that listens to the stories and doesn’t automatically discredit the stranger side of the experiences. With music, interviews, on site explorations, historical accounts, strange familiars really brings the listener into a world that is enchanted and complex. Thank you for making this podcast!

Heard Tim on Sasquatch chronicles. Seemed like a genuine and interesting guy. So I gave his podcast a listen. Started from the first episode and like what I heard. A couple of buddies exploring the area they live. learning about folklore, myths, history, and about the paranormal about the area. The use of his own band Stone breath for the music in the show is also cool. I’ve never heard music like that before. It’s a very interesting podcast. I’ve enjoyed listening to them. So much so that I became a patron for show.

Strange Familiars...
I’ve recently found this podcast and decided to start from the beginning, at episode one, so I’m still a fairly new listener. I love the paranormal, witches, UFO, fairies, Bigfoot and anything strange they discuss. The podcast uses actual history, old newspaper stories, legend, folklore, mythical sides of each subject, allowing for a history lesson and an open mindedness approach to what the discussion might be. I do get a wee bit confused as to what is next after the music, or if they’re still discussing the same thing. I’m sure things will be fine tuned as time goes by and the show will be even more amazing. Love it so far!

Great informative podcast on local PA
One of the many blessings that the new media off podcasts has given the world is that we are seeing a return to local interest in a way that terrestrial radio used to be in the 70s and 80s. Timothy gives us a show on mainly local paranormal and high strangeness occurrences yet his firm grasp of the subject matter is shown by references and comparisons to other prominent researchers in the field. I highly recommend Timothy’s Strange Familiars to anyone interested in the topic.

Fantastic host, creepy sometimes seldom explored topics, and amazing stories
I love this podcast, I’m deep into all things paranormal and this show does every topic and every story that comes to them justice. They do a great job of approaching even the most outlandish ideas with an even head and an open mind. My favorite episodes of the podcast so far are what I’m calling “The Flannel Man Chronicles”. Those episodes are where this podcast does what it is best at, talking to different people who have had odd and oddly similar experiences and trying to make sense of them while respecting what their guests have been through.

Enchanting
I can hardly put into words how extraordinary this podcast is. I don't think there's another one like it. It takes the listeners on remarkable journeys into folk tales and legends that are rich in magic and the paranormal. Hosts Timothy Renner and James are just so knowledgeable and thorough. It's obvious they really do their research, providing listeners with histories of both the people and places in these mysterious events. There are episodes where they even cite old newspaper articles, some even as old as the 1800's! While the stories and guests are at the heart of this podcast, it's creators are also musicians and therefore the sound effects, background music, editing, which is all done by them, is great. Music from their band Stone Breath is featured in the closing credits and is a fantastic blending of Folk with medieval influences. Host Timothy Renner, who also does vocals for Stone Breath has a beautiful and distinct voice, both as a vocalist and a show host. Sarada (hope I spelled that right), also lends her lovely voice to readings of old news articles of unusual events If you're looking for a podcast led by cynics and naysayers, this is definitely NOT the one for you. The mysteries of our world and the folktales inspired by them are explored with an open heart and open mind. And there's even a sprinkling of one of my very favorite topics on occasion, cryptozoology. Not a lot, but enough. Love this!

Entertaining and Addicting
So when I decide I want to listen to a certain type of podcast, say paranormal for example, I go through and download an episode or two of a couple dozen different podcasts then whittle them down. Strange Familiars was the only podcast to survive the cuts out of 21 podcasts. The guys are entertaining and I have not yet wanted to send a therapist to their homes. The topics are well researched and fun to listen to without a sheer inundation of information until your eyes glaze over and 20 minutes later you have no idea what you were listening to. As an added bonus, they are very well spoken. I have to say, their "history reader" is also a pleasure to listen to and I love hearing actual news articles from the past.

I love it but...
I feel like this podcast is almost there. It's really REALLY hard to find a podcast on various unexplained phenomena worth listening to repeatedly. This one is almost there. I'm going to stick with it for a while. However I do have some critiques. Just two things really. The first is the audio theater readings of the "news reports". I don't like it. It takes me out of the realism of the supposed "real" report. I like your voices as they are and I think it would work just as well if you read them stright out instead of trying to be different. Or at least tone down the lo-fi-ness of them. Second is the fact that Seriah uploads this to his show "Where did the Road Go". Every episode of Strange Familiars is on Seriah's show. I'm sure it's hurting your download numbers on itunes. I myself have unsubscribed to this show because he uploads it there and only because I started donwloading his show first. His show is about 60/40 goodness anyway. This show is part of the good 60% of his show. Sometimes his guests are unbearable to listen to or the subject is kind of boring to me. Btw I don't buy this guy's bigfoot story for a second in episode #9. It seems like he's the only one experiencing everything while his buddy sleeps through everything? And he "keeps it to himself" most of the time? They might have heard something big crashing around but other than that I think the's playing make believe out in the woods. But here I am complaining about something that's FREE! So don't get me wrong I LOVE this stuff! I'm mainly worried about Strange Familiars download numbers. I'm going to re-subscribe now that i think of it! Keep up the good work guys! Make some changes like the ones I mentioned. Because it's all about me right!?

I recently discovered this wonderful podcast. I've been listening to the episodes while I ride my bike on the Great Allegheny Passage bike trails just outside of Pittsburgh. The show provides long-forgotten "strange" stories about "familiar" paranormal topics. I enjoy the formatting and the reading of old newspaper stories. When a new show drops on my feed, it's usualy the first thing I want to hear next.

Great premise, terrible execution.
Really looking forward to a Pennsylvania-centric podcast, but this one dies quickly. Two is always a crowd telling stories, especially two tongue-smackers. 11 minutes into the first episode I listened to, these yakkers are still promoting the show, giggling and tossing in-jokes back and forth. They then turn the story over to a woman who, while gifted with a pleasant voice, sounds robotic as she plainly reads a story. Egads. Then they jump back in to "discuss." Enough. I've now spent more time panning this mess than listening to it. Go back to the drawing board, guys. And remove yourselves from the audio. Annoying.

A well researched and highly fascinating podcast exploring the local tales of haunted locales in Pennsylvania. - The Heart Wound of Emma MyersWe present a tale of murder from 1800s York County, Pennsylvania. Johnny Coyle shot and killed Emma Myers in a barn at the historic Accomac Inn. Johnny was sentenced to hang for the crime, and Emma’s aunt brought her heart to the gallows – contained in a bottle of alcohol and showing the wound which killed the young Emma.
