Joey Helmer from OUInsider (247/Sports) joins us to talk Oklahoma Football
SoonerNation: Oklahoma Sooners
Side to bring in the one, the only Joey Helmer Oklahoma 24/7 Sports crazy times Joey you and I usually run into each other at a baseball or softball game this time of year but it's been nothing but a covering I guess NBA horse.
Yeah, this is bizarre. And I mean if it's coming up with anything and everything is unfortunately, Trae young, I guess tonight heading one, the other night he'd be he'd be going tonight in the horse competition but you didn't get that done and gets Billups and I was hoping you'd go farther in the 2K tournament that he did. I thought you had a chance to win it to ya. I really thought she was a favorite on the 2K tournament and Chris Paul going out as well in the horse tournament for Oklahoma basketball.
Yeah, a lot, a lot of people that I were probably too dim in this state might not be tuned in for the rest of the tournament. Would your kind of hoping those stupid when is in Oklahoma. No. Hey, let's talk about the Sooners, a lot of things starting to really crank up with recruiting. Not having Spring football didn't seem to hurt Oklahoma as much as far as able to get out and make offers and really kind of generate some momentum. Who would you expect to be Oklahoma's next member of this class of 2021? Given the uncertainty in, this is something that's interesting when you look at Oklahoma's recruiting and and I said this was someone else earlier today that I'm not so sure, it doesn't hurt recruiting as much, if not maybe more than at the team, not even being able to practice given this weekend would be the spring game and
In what region Riley has been able to do with the spring game and turning that basically into a second cookout, they have that event in the summer. But there's a lot of really good. Positive, smoke right now, around Mario Williams, he's got quite a few crystal ball, the four-star receiver from Plant City Florida, and he's close with that with Caleb Williams as well. And so, you know, you looking me and what are packet is still that would be if you were able to get both of those guys.
We were talking before we start recording about just trying to find anything to write about these days and I wrote late last night, Caleb Williams, Mario Williams with the hot dog tweets. You know there's a third guy in there from Florida. Receiver, can you look into that? I mean, Mario Williams seems to be almost a lock to Landon. Norman, the fact that he's kind of doing that kind of goofy stuff with Caleb, Williams desert, is there something to that? Yeah, you know, I mean, that's the kind of the name of recruiting these these days, you, you know, you get one guy and it in obviously neither of those guys are off or but you know, you get one guy and he's good friends with this other guy and next thing, you know, you get package deals out of it, it's all that. That's much of a recruiting thing. Now, that is the relationships with the coaching staff, because these kids are so connected through a social media, and a Twitter and in tweeting each other. So yeah. Yeah.
New Hope to get this one Elite player that's really close with this other Elite player in and hopefully that could be the case for Oklahoma as it has been in some of their previous recruiting classes. Christian Leary, the the other four-star wide receiver who was involved in the hot dog. Suites, you know, that's where you want to go and then get some top-notch Talent around you. Absolutely a great players. Want to play with great players and especially if you can get a quarterback that the caliber of Spencer Rattler you look it at all. Those guys that came in with him, Austin Stockton or Tracy Bridges. Theo wease, I mean it just great pass catchers that guys are going to see for several years here. Now fit want to play with a quarterback that caliber
Yeah, so let's just talk about Spence around there since we kind of Turn the Page. They're Oklahoma not having spring practice.
And you had, what was allegedly, a quarterback competition people approach of a lot of skepticism, but let's assume it was a real quarterback competition between Rattler and Tanner Mordecai. What is that benefit one over the other interesting discussion and I think you can kind of look at it. Both ways of the people that made me think it better benefits. 10 or more guy would be those that I say, he's been in the system of your longer it in. This is another semester where Spencer Rattler now doesn't get to practice that extra time and maybe catch up on the other hand. Are you lucky in? I tend to believe it. May be favored by Spencer Rattler, because I think maybe a long drawn-out competition would have been Mordecai's best-case here. Now, that's not the case. Now you're looking at, I may be a late summer if the season starts on time and it will tend to that in a minute. But you looking for maybe a late summer and fall camp,
Then, where is Spencer Rattler? Already had any kind of edge of Beast oportuna, word of God. Overtake him talked about this quite a bit on our podcast, this thing. I mean, some people say you can't look anything into the Peach Bowl, but the fact that it was Spencer Rattler who came in and garbage time. I look at this as to Mordecai has more than proved in Rattlers. Almost like it's a position to lose and therefore not having spring hurt, hurt Mordecai. And from my perspective, and I feel like I completely agree with that 100%. I think that you can look in it, we're so interested now aren't we? Did that Oklahoma got that first. Now that I actually see if I was going to come into the game because you have to take Lincoln Riley at face value, that that's what was going to happen in the same sentence. I believe they're Rattler came in first there for a reason.
If you'd be hard-pressed to convince me, otherwise, I do believe he is the guy leading this race if I was to pick one of the two. So it'll be interesting to see though I was as everyone else. Very much looking forward to how those Stuart perform, this bring. Yeah, no doubt in you. No other guys. You look at chemistry. We talked about Spencer Rattler and COs in all those receivers that he came in with theirs, already chemistry. There is or not, or even that event, but you could tell it was almost like they were already on campus with Oklahoma that played. So, that's something when you talk about Oklahoma, instantly hear what people say, well, they, you know, Jalen hurts. That it was outstanding last year or the year before. I said, Kyler Murray and Baker, Mayfield before that will. Where is Oklahoma going to be off?
Let's build up already even though they're going to have a new quarterback. Yeah. And you know Oklahoma that's one thing that needs to be talked about is the offensive line is going to be much better from the beginning of the season. This year, that was a group that I came together. Last year, they played pretty well but Lincoln Riley has talked about how he wanted better play there. So this is going to be an offense to me that I'm not going to have a ton of question marks around you. Look in the back Bill they're loaded there too. So yeah. We'll see it. I think Spencer Rattler if he is Kyle be fine though is that a can of work, so we can find some gas right now Joey Helmer 24/7 Sports for chip lead. Oklahoma Sooners version of 24 7 Sports does a outstanding job covering Oklahoma in football right now and I'm going to ask you a question.
But it's not going to be difficult. Okay? So don't don't. Don't panic on me. NFL draft next weekend, first player from Oklahoma off the board CD lamb or Kenneth Murray
OCD lamp. I just stayed you lucky in being that there's some great receiver talent in this draft and especially early, but you like it in. All right, I think all the projections have him very, very close to the top 10, if not, maybe in that top 10, I myself actually on the Kansas City Chiefs being. As you know, I do not want him to go to Oakland or Denver. I think she'll be outstanding and either destination but yeah, you got a ride right there. Couple Alabama, guys, jury duty as well and then see deal and those three are all going to be really high draft pick in the first week. I know he deftly disagrees with you on the, on the, on the Raiders didn't want his love to see both either one of those guys, if not both in the silver and black
Football player that was a covid. Crisis, there's all kinds of rumors, all kinds of talk, all kinds of speculation and really at this point, I don't think you can call anything other than speculation. But how do you see the 2020 season shaping now, what's the best case scenario? And what's the most realistic scenario on your opinion? I was not surprised but I thought it was very serious based on some conversations that I had it had with people medical experts expected. There was a chance that a lot of stuff was going to get canceled and I was trying to warn people of that possibility is unlikely is anything like that ever would have seen. But obviously the Right Moves and saying that other certain that this season could start on time. We're talking four and a half 5 months down.
And that's a whole lot of time for a people in the medical industry to figure stuff out. These are the smartest people in the world that can figure a lot of things out. So I was supposed to be, I think everything is on the table, you know, you could see a shortened season. I think it's more likely that you see a season in the spring compared to a short season in the fall and die. I certainly am hopeful though that things will start on time and we will know, I believe the outcome of what is making it happen by June 1st. That's kind of the date in my mind that I think they're going to kind of start to publicly announce stain. Golf be back at, you know, she's okay. So, taking taking a journalistic, do you point out of it, just as a fan of college football, would you rather have football on time taking off the first weekend in September with no fans in the stands, but able to watch
On television and interact that way, or would you prefer to have a spring season? Where fans can, they would pick him up for football over, you know, March Madness. But which way would you rather go with that? Have to have the fee into the stand, in my opinion in that was something I, I guess I didn't address that. That's another possibility. You could, I have all the teams of the acid in obviously no fans in the stands this fall, but I could start off on, it could be a couple weeks late. That's another possibility here. But I think that this is college football in college athletics. And I think we have to separate it from professional athletic, that this isn't an entire a student experience. And he you can play through us worse without fees and see. And I believe that I think you could do that College.
Talking about students being on campus and going to class, they have to be able to go to class as well. So this is a bigger thing than just talking about college football to me, you can't you can't say, hey we're going to have you back on campus having class and not let you go to football games. And so, to me playing in the spring makes more sense. If you're going to near those narrow, those two scenarios down with you guys, a 24/7 Sports to my fee and you're the best in the business when it comes to recruiting. And and looking at wherever Cruiser are most likely going to land. I want to close out by talking about Caleb Williams cuz everyone has their attention on him. But before we do that hit us up, just where they can where can people find York on? How can I follow you on Twitter? And so for sure, you can follow all of our stuff at ouinsider.com. We're going to have a special piece. I know as soon as fans are going to be washed,
Glued to the TV with the the 56 and that 61 horsey, alumni game nicely. Before that interesting, Lee enough I was sent to a bring out a bunch of all decades themes in order to start with the fifties and we're going to do an all decade team over the next week. So you can read all of that on our side and then I'll be tweeting it out at my Twitter handle a 24/7 by Johnny Tatum Williams, is it really down to five schools or is it not just to
Yeah, I think at this point you're looking at MSU schools here in Oklahoma, has to feel very, very good was were there at among those schools. If even if there is a talk to, you have to feel like Oklahoma that if your issue trusting, your crystal ball and you should 90% of the predictions half-empty Oklahoma. So what does it say about Lincoln Riley? Do that. He lose his Brock vandagriff in and immediately says, hey, I'm going to go get in on a guy. This not only another great quarterback, but higher rates quarterback in a guy that is number 6. Now on our latest rankings on Wednesday, but I think as the season goes we going to see if he could certainly will be a top-five prospect. I so I've been staying again. So you're the expert so you can shoot me down or you can affirm me here. I've been saying it's down to LSU and Oklahoma Oklahoma is the choice.
Right around the time he released his top five, but my opinion is he's got to play this out because of the Sports Illustrated block, is that that sounds remotely accurate? I don't think you could be too far off their, you know, and I like the two that you have in in your talk to, but I still can't already reiterate based on our experts in their predictions. Are a really good and difficult. We don't mess with these. Thank you. I've been so broke. Lahoma. Maybe to be optimistic about this group. Managed, the job that Lincoln Riley's doing overall recruiting week. We talked about defensively be up ticket, in prospects that they're Landing. Now, I'm obviously tough, dudes committing, do Ohio State, you would have liked to have, but overall really, really solid job since you taking over. Okay, we talk
Maria Williams in Caleb Williams. Give me one more guy. That Caleb Williams might get to come with him. Oklahoma, just one more guy, I talked to your kind of looking at it and I don't know if I can necessarily narrower pinpoint. A one guy that I'd like to see Row in on right now at it and say if you will. But suffice to say that they are definitely was Oklahoma's. Definitely working on a number of guys that are, they can pull in Homer of ugly, ouinsider. 24/7 sports.com do, it's always a pleasure to talk to him and stay healthy and I hopefully will see you in about sometime soon and hopefully for everyone out there they are self-quarantining it in listening to the state home. Because I cautioned not to tell people that made it just really sucks. There's no doubt about it.
If we want college football, like, we're used to having it, we got to stick to a guy's we really do. Enjoy the best of luck to you and will talk to you soon, okay?
