I love this podcast
I really like the three regulars and Slate money is one of my must listen podcasts. The guest strongly influences the quality of the the show. I just finished listening to the episode with Taffy Brodsser-Akner and please don’t ever have her on again. She interrupts, does most of the talking and despite taking the lion’s share of the discussion she does not make any sense. She never makes her point and overall ruined the episode. The three regulars - keep up the good work!

More Elizabeth please!
Less Emily!! Thank you Today ( Saturday) in the numbers round, Emily went on and on and on and on about the transit workers ( we get it)!! She has half baked opinions, continually says” I don’t know” etc… like who should know … me?? I turn to this show to get exoert opinion. Not you… doubting yourself. And then there’s super smart Elizabeth… who’s mic is either too low volume or she needs Nevis training to speak up. She needs more air time… she is so smart… Where was her numbers round entry on Saturday and yours Felix?? Just saying More Elizabeth, more guest hosts, less Emily please!!! Thank you

Felix deserves a stand-alone show
Is Emily’s sole role in the podcast to stand-in as the “dumb listener”? She asks the most remedial questions and adds no value. It’s beyond irritating and makes the show unbearable.

Quiet Quitting from Reality?
The discussion about childcare in the context of “quiet quitting” made me furious. The level of idiocy comparing a pie company to a child care center should be so embarrassing as to keep you from airing this recording. If you do not know the pain of paying the actual equivalent of a college tuition in childcare to be able to attend your workday, your opinion is irrelevant. To say “people don’t realize their value while they stand in line …” it was like listening to a teenager pontificate on the pointlessness of retirement savings. Spare us.

Sovereign Debt - or What I Owe Slate Money
I have loved this show from its inception & through its panelists’ comings and goings—never one who didn’t widen my perspective. I was an English/Classics major and never took an Economics course so this is pretty much all news to me. I now at least know when to roll my eyes, e.g. when the WeWork guy got a new gig. I am such a Felix fan and there is no extreme take or reaction that I will not welcome. Extra points for saying from the get go that the Musk/Twitter deal was vaporous. Also, extra thanks for teaching me not to sweat it about rosé. That alone has saved me some real bucks.

Who actually cares about art appraisals?
Long-time listener, but it feels like the show is losing its lustre. Used to enjoy listening because it felt like they would cover complex issues very clearly, now it’s just getting boring. For example, why is there so much time dedicated to art appraisals? At least 30 mins across two episodes! Anyone who pays 90k for art (fake or otherwise) isn’t listening to Slate Money. They could get into the nitty gritty of things that affect people (supply chains, energy prices, etc) but it’s all just attributed to ‘bad economy vibes’.

Great insight into the ignorant elite
This is a great podcast to hear how liberal, coastal elite think. The hosts have no clue how monetary or fiscal policy work, nor do they have a pulse on the average American. I recommend to anyone interested in anthropology -- super interesting how naive and uninformed today's journalists are!

Love the show but justice for Elizabeth!
I am a long time listener of this show, and appreciate how interesting and accessible they make the latest financial news (a sector I know little about!). My one gripe of late though is that Felix can be quite undermining of Elizabeth — since she’s been added as a host, not an episode goes by where he doesn’t question or challenge her view in some way. There is a way to disagree or not understand someone’s view without demeaning or questioning their authority — and I wish he’d do that a bit more sensitively cause it’s honestly very grating!

Horrendous host chemistry
It has the potential to be Planet Money for grownups, but is ruined by the worst host chemistry I’ve come across. An arrogant, interrupting, mansplaining host and two women who sound like they’re trapped in the room and completely uninterested in the discussion. I keep listening in the hopes that it will get better. It doesn’t.

Still sad
Panel podcasts work well when it seems like the people like and respect each other’s opinions and knowledge. I keep trying this one every few weeks, hoping it has even a semblance of the rapport of other podcasts. I am always disappointed. Felix comes across as a mansplainer, interrupting the female hosts who just don’t seem interested in the topics or maybe not interested in talking to Felix. Maybe it’s also the topics or focus of the show. Is it personal finance? Large picture issues? I’d say maybe make it more “your money” than Elon Musk, who gets enough coverage as it is. Can Slate find 3 experts who respect each other or is it’s budget too small? This podcast is a disappointment, and I feel sorry for Elizabeth and Emily.

Funny but Dumb
And update - I notice, as we watch the Russians blast and burn their way through Ukraine, killing thousands, how well their steel reinforced buildings seems to do despite columns being blasted away and whole building fires. I mention this to remind Felix of his roughly dumbest commentary in the history of Slate against such structures. While being entertaining this podcast is without a dumbest in the Slate lineup. In today’s podcast a guest complains that it’s impossible to find Covid rapid tests for the Offical price of $14 each, rather “I’ve never seen them available for less than $28” which, as we all know, is for 2 tests. How does this get past an editor? Are interns editors? Then again, this is the podcast that has wasted everyone’s hour one week railing against steel reinforced concrete. Just dumb.

Emily knows nothing
I like the show for some fun one off fluff topics but def nothing particularly useful here. Emily doesn’t know anything about any topic they discuss and is a really bad representative for women - comes off as a complete bimbo who is hard wired to spit out the most progressive opinion about everything. The shows real value is the Succession recaps and discussions about movies with a financial bend These people do need to answer for their dangerous promotion of modern monetary theory, though - now that inflation is the highest since the 80s.

Elite often
I’m very disappointed on there handling and discussion of recent events. They have been very one sided, bordering on arrogant. The most recent discussion of the CNN milk report really shows how pompous, arrogant, elitist and out of touch they are. This used to be a fair review of the major themes affecting our economy and now it’s just a rehash of what the Biden press secretary says. Will be unsubscribing.

Love the podcast, so glad Succession is back.
A suggested topic for future discussions of Succession: I’ve noticed that they rarely, if ever, show any of the Roys eating food. I can recall Roman having one bite of an apple in a convenience store. He also smells a biscuit at management training and then puts it back. The only other instance I can recall was Greg and Tom eating the ortolan, but we didn’t actually see that… Wondering if you think the showrunners have been intentional in depicting the Roys’ relationship with food, and what might be behind those intentions.

Numbers Round: 1: The number of hosts that need to be replaced
Emily Peck’s continued position as co-host on this show, despite her rudimentary grasp of every discussed topic, epitomizes white woman privilege. Stacy-Marie, the newest host, is an intelligent veteran financial journalist. However, she barely gets to speak over all of Emily’s cringy, uninformed hot takes and Felix’s arrogant mansplaining. Have listened for years but this show gets worse, especially with this super awkward host dynamic.

To political
Flex and Ana, really know what they are talking about and for the most part don’t inject too much leftist anti-Trump, anti-Republican statements, Ana better that Flex. However, Emily really seems like she knows nothing about Economics or Finance, and will always without fail take shots at Trump or the Republicans and for some reason the American Medical system. I don’t think she adds anything to the show or any discussion on economics or finance. Cathy, who Emily replaced, while a leftist actually knew things about Finance.

Provide Better Background on Topics
I usually find this show to be useful and to provide context on the financial sector in clear terms. However, the hosts often dive into the topic without providing a brief summary, so I sometimes just skip the whole show after two minutes because it’s clear they are not going to slow down and inform me about the general outline of the topic they’re discussing. When this happens it is extremely frustrating.

Tone it down Felix
I enjoy the show but there’s room for improvement. In general Emily doesn’t bring a lot of insight - she seems to scan the nyt and that’s about it. And Felix is great in small doses but he thinks a lot of himself and interrupts the women a lot. The session about his family was a bit much. Felix - I encourage you to make it about ideas not yourself for once - and learn some manners.

Why is Emily on the show?
I listen every week and enjoy the podcast as a whole. My only concern is Emily. It seems like she makes inaccurate statements and you always know her opinion on an issue before she states it. Emily Peck, in particular, doesn’t know much about business or economics and doesn’t ever seem to be prepared to say anything interesting. A lot of her comments are embarrassingly inaccurate. I keep listening, because I like the format and want it to work, but there’s not much value added. If they need someone for color commentary, I suggest adding someone who lives outside of NYC. Total Joke
If you want objective economic commentary, look elsewhere. In the episode “Too big to be small” one of the hosts made the argument that the Fed should be allowed to run wild and do as they please followed by “It doesn’t seem to hurt anything”... Good one, guys. They also showered praise on Ben Bernanke who famously said that everything was under control right before the 2008 financial crisis and went further as to say Janet Yellen has never got anything wrong. Yellen in 2017: “We won’t see another financial crisis in our lifetimes”. (This review is being written in the middle of a huge financial crisis where a total of 16.8 million people have filed for unemployment... so far) They also mentioned how the Fed has gotten better and better as the years have gone on, what world are these people living in?

Housing
Another attempt to discuss a difficult social problem from the perspective of well off coastal knuckle heads. “We need bad neighborhoods”. Smacks of their routed worldview in the meritocracy myth, “ zoning is the problem “ giving the perspective of the bad government. No discussion of how market based pressures have driven investors into the housing industry as yet another asset class they can speculate upon and exploit. Those inflated costs drive up the construction costs, as well, as developers lard on profit from the immigrant and trade workers building them for few dollars. Same old BS. Not very imaginative.

Best Financial/Business Podcast
So, I don't generally go for business and/or financial podcasts, but I have been listening to Slate Money since its inception as it automatically appeared in my Slate Plus Feed. I've always enjoyed the interplay between the hosts, and while I do miss Jordan and Kathy (the original co-hosts), I do like the current lineup as well. Emily is adorable and even Anna, as the resident contrarian, provides some needed balance and the frisson of tension. Felix, of course, is awesome, and I'm indebted unto the show for introducing me to Succession which I started watching so I would get all of the references and now love it as much as they do.

Came for Succession
Not sure whether I really like this podcast or if I’m just so desperate for Succession podcasts, anything will do. I generally enjoy these discussions, but it sounds like the hosts tend to only watch the episodes once, which does not lend itself to recalling everything you need to. On the most recent episode, Felix said he’s never seen Jesse Armstrong with a writing credit for the show...he literally just won an Emmy for writing an episode of the show. So if you’re like me and are very detail-oriented, this podcast may drive you crazy sometimes. But if you want to just listen to people talk about a great show, add this to your list.

Anna Szymanski is a national treasure
This is my first ever podcast review, and I'm doing it solely because Anna is fantastic, and makes listening to this still worth it, despite Jordan now being gone. To me, the "golden age" of Slate Money was the relatively brief period when Felix, Anna, and Jordan were the hosts. His replacement, Emily, while she seems very nice and I'm sure is a wonderful person in many ways, just does not seem knowledgeable about many of the discussion topics, and openly admits to only listeining to experts who share her strong partisan leanings when preparing. The best parts of the show now are Anna's epic takedowns of Felix and Emily's not-very-evidence-based-groupthink. Really, Anna is the only thing holding this show together at this point and at least trying to ground the discussions in facts, and if/when she leaves I will probably have to retire this podcast from my list.

I used to love this podcast, because it covered issues it was hard to find anywhere else. But eventually I got sick of Felix constantly interrupting everyone so he could waste time with his halting speech and opinions that were so often called out as uninformed and factually inaccurate by the rest of the panel. Also, Anna speaks a mile a minute, probably to try to get a word in edgewise before Felix monologues again. I love the content and format, but until Felix learns to have a proper conversation, I can’t listen

Remember when facts mattered?
A few months ago I would have rated this five stars. But Jordan Weissmann is gone and Emily Peck is no substitute. On the WeBurnout edition you could almost hear Anna Szymanski's frustration as Emily kept falling back on anecdotal data when discussing millenial burnout. Anna clear wanted to debate whether the data backed up the premise, Emily didn't seem to care, and Felix just wanted to keep the conversation lively. This podcast is falling apart.

Great show. I love listening to this and I am not at all into finance, but it has perhaps the most irritating intro ever as Felix shouts the most disingenous "heloooooooo and welllllllcome" ever. I literally have to pull my headphones out and wait for it to pass. The show went downhill a bit after Jordan Weissman left, but the female hosts on the show are amazing and they keep Felix in check when he gets to be douchey. Definitely worth a listen.

Good content. Very biased.
I always learn something when I listen to this. And they have good debates about certain issues. But their liberal bias is extreme. And they are convinced that they are smarter than everyone else, even those who are successfully running businesses while they only supply commentary.

Really deteriorated in quality
I've been a listener since the start of this show. In the beginning it had a variety of viewpoints and was both interesting and insightful. In recent months it has really gone downhill in quality. There is no longer good critical analysis, the topics are not well researched and what was once a lively debate is now a bunch of people saying the same thing and making genuinely terrible banter. I'm ending my subscription, this has become a waste of an hour.

Felix, change intro
I like this show, but I’m not a fan of Felix (one of the 3 hosts). The “hello” intro is really annoying, and there are times Felix comes across as either full of himself or drunk. I have a hard time getting past his personality half the time, especially when he cuts his cohosts down. The show itself is interesting and has wonderful guests.

Interesting topic but Felix’s constant interruption of everyone is annoying as F. Yes so he’s the host, we get it. Can other people finish a sentence now? Big problem with constant talking over of female voices and guests.

Great show
Three people get together every week to discuss some top financial stories as well as interesting segments on different topics. Felix Salmon is the host and while he is good, he also tends to speak over his co-hosts and interrupts constantly. Still it is a really good show.

Okay, I don't usually like 'yellers,' but when Felix comes on, I can't resist. I miss Cathy, but glad you found a savvy and sassy woman to (try to) fill her spot. And Jordan is so good on his research - the welfare podcast, for example. Always interesting topics and angles I hadn't thought of. Keep going!

If you are like most people you will look at the topic list for some episode and go "sovereign debt? Wotta snooze" and look elsewhere. If that is you, though, give this podcast a try. It is about fifty times as much fun and as funny as you think possible. Salmon is a real hoot!

Missing Cathy
One of my favorite podcasts, but it's just not as good without Cathy O'Neil. She's so smart, and the team had such good chemistry. I understand that they wanted to replace her with another woman, but Anna Szymanski is a serious downgrade. She needs to calm down and talk slower. She's either silent or tripping over herself to talk and the results are hard to listen to. Breathe, Anna, breathe! (Let's hope she gets more comfortable.)

Loyal fan, but it may be going downhill
Maybe I am just mourning the loss of the great Cathy O'Neil. But this podcast, along with the great Nate Silver's politics podcast has always managed to keep people from talking over each other (especially male voices interrupting female) - but with the loss of Cathy, I fear that the conversation has become more disjointed and less like a friendly, enlightened chat about the economic and financial news. Anna S seems great, but it is hard to replace Cathy who was in many ways more able to speak to a broader point of few, including more issues not directly in the Money purview.

Insufferable
Felix Salmon's absurdly exaggerated British accent is very hard to listen to. He has an unfortunate vocal/accent similarity to Sebastien Gorka. While this is not his fault, it is stingingly pretentious. Very difficult to take any sentence in which he uses the words 'I feel' seriously. Admittedly, this is as much my problem as it is his, but I am the person writing this review. I can't say that I listen to very many money pundits. They seem as vapid and banal as most political pundits, only without any semblance of empathy. The like-ability drop off after NPR's "Planet Money" is steep. Slate Money is at the top of the heap at the bottom of the cliff.

My favorite part of every Saturday morning
I love this podcast. I've been listening since summer of '14 when it launched. I keep coming back for Felix's uncanny wealth of knowledge of very specific and nerdy subjects (sovereign debt, art markets, etc.) and Jordan's unique perspective on the news of the week. Additionally, I hope Anna is here to stay. She's been a phenomenal addition to the last few shows. Big fan

Great topics but a host who can't stop interrupting.
Slate money discusses fascinating topics in a depth that you simply cant get in daily news. The host, Felix, however, needs to learn to let the other panelists talk. He constantly interrupts and talks over Jordan and Cathy with "clever" tangents that just fall flat and derail the discussion. He consistently mansplains Cathy, not allowing her to finish insiteful arguments. While Felix does make some great contributions, and I really do mean that, the podcast would be 5 stars if he just talked 50% less.

Great if no Felix Salmon!
I agree with other reviewers--the way Felix interrupts and insists on being “THE” know it all and denigrates his co-hosts makes this almost unlistenable. (Not to mention how fast I go to the controls so I don’t have to hear his “helllllOOOO” at the beginning. I guess it’s a British thing but it’s not funny in the US. It’s beyond irritating.) Cathy is great. I love most all Slate podcasts and I’d love to listen to a money one but not with Felix. I’m so excited that this week’s one is without him and is led by Cathy! What a relief.

Interesting conversation, but overpowering host
I really want to like this podcast - I keep listening because the topics and conversation are interesting & informative. Less Felix
The topics are great but sometimes it feels like it is all just Felix talking. Often he will ask a question, give his co-hosts a brief opportunity to say something, then go into a 5 minute monlogue. Why bother having intelligent guests and co-hosts if all we are going to do is listen to Felix. I have stopped listening to more than one episode because he simply can't contain himself.

I'm giving 3 because of their absurd condescension
This is a great podcast but with a few annoyances. First the bad: I just heard Felix Salmon say only the "coastal elites" take deductions on their tax returns and that the great middle of the country need not bother. So, as a resident of not a coastal state, that $250,000 charitable contribution I made? No deduction? The tens of thousands I pay in interest annually on my multi-million-dollar mortgage? I should use Form 1040EZ, I guess. You will hear nonsense like that on many Slate Money episodes. Other examples: They say people are too dumb to pick stocks. (No they aren't. They just need to be wiling to buy and hold.) They say most people shouldn't buy houses because most people don't have the financial wherewithal to intelligently compare the benefits of owning vs. renting. (No, people shouldn't buy houses they can't afford because of lenders who knowingly and predatorily encourage them to borrow above their ability to repay so they banks can create mortgages guaranteed to fail that can be sold in tranches to short sellers.) If they want to make a finances for beginners podcast, they should do that. But if they are going to talk about global markets, the ins and outs of tax policy, the economic fallout from Brexit, the merits of Silicon Valley business strategies, the mores of the US banking industry and the like, then they should know and respect the audience for these topics. Stop making blanket statements about the idiocy of people who don't live in California and New York. If listeners are interested in financial algorithms and Felix's obsession with the Argentinian bond fiasco, they likely possess a good measure of financial sophistication and resent being talked down to or lectured on money basics. Also, Jordan tries too hard to show that he's smart and in the know, and he literally giggles after every single thing he says. Cathy seems to put in minimal prep, and Felix continuously interrupts his co-hosts to say they are wrong. He also rarely lets them finish making their point. Now the good: This really is a highly entertaining podcast with interesting takes on the financial news. If you like to listen to financial news analysis, and if you can listen past the handful of (easily correctable!) irritations, you'll probably really enjoy this podcast.

No more Lynette Lopez--Please
I love this podcast and found this week's entry to be degraded by Lynette Lopez. She interrupts again and again. Mostly when she had nothing to say and degraded the conversation. Please have a 2 person podcast if she is the only person available when one of the regulars is inavailable. Examples of her degradation: --On the recent Census Report being very very good, she said that that could not be the case since she knew millenials who were still living with their parents. Why is that relevant?? --On Jordan's report that the number of people who had been pushed into bankruptcy was 3.5%, she attributed it to high deductibles without any support. Neither she nor Jordan looked at what the rate was before ACA. I believe that it was in the high single digits. High deductibles cannot push families into bankruptcy since they are no more than about $1000. She should speak only when she has something evidence based to say and only when the other panelists have stopped speaking. I do not think she made even one evidence based statement on this week's podcast.

Great balance of market chatter and entertainment, BUT:
Please stop talking over each other. I find it so annoying. Felix hates to let Jordan talk, but then I sympathize with Felix, because Jordan is not super concise in getting to his point. Great content
I really like this podcast - they produce a high quality discussion on current events on a weekly basis. The 50-60 minute length is great - and a welcome sight for me every Saturday morning. The information is presented in a clear & understandable manner, but they do cover some deep topics. I also like that the hosts were very responsive when I emailed a question. My one ask is that they produce a second episode each week that covers a 'deep dive' topic. The main podcast focuses on current events, and so they usually just touch the surface of interesting ideas like 'the rising cost of college', the impacts of payday lenders, etc. There are many episodes where I hear Felix say that 'we need to do a full episode on ___', and I can only imagine that backlog of ideas has become quite long. I'd love more content, and hope the advertising makes it worthwhile. My next mattress will surely be a Casper, and will sleep on Boll & Branch sheets - all because of this!

I do give them some small bit of credit for trying to discuss issues that pertain to investments but their General lack of knowledge about how markets work and overriding need to be 50 in the round table format really make for Pontification without education. In a recent episode about multiple share classes that he went on for 15 minutes about the merits of Google and Facebook's multiple share classes and never once touched up on the topic of index funds who has to own the stocks and pension funds who also need to own market waiting in these types of securities. The point is, if you're going to explore and issue like this really look at who the shareholder base is and what their motivations are for buying and holding these stocks. Not everyone can vote with their feet.

Ads deceptive
Love the show, but your ads are becoming more and more difficult to separate from your content. You can't have "journalism" and paid content in the same breath and remain impartial. Check out what Alex Bloomberg is doing with his Gimlet shows. He has found a pretty good balance in separating paid from original content. Slate on the other hand rolls from reporting to an ad without any separation. Half the time I can't tell if you believe what you say or are choking on a stack of cheap razors and foam mattress cash.

This podcast is unbalanced between the extremely knowledgable, articulate and confident Felix, and the more halting contributors who have to fight to get a word in edgewise. Good concept, and highly interesting economic and financial topics - but maybe Felix should go at it alone if he can’t share the mic, like Mike Pesca (The Gist). I found that the Inc. Although I still enjoy Planet Money, Slate Money is the economics podcast I most look forward to every week. Felix, Cathy, and Jordan have great chemistry and explain complex economics issues in an entertaining way. Their podcast on the wine industry is one of my all-time favorites. It's a fascinating industry and they should discuss it more. For example, the Premier Cru scandal is interesting, even though it may only be a run-of-the-mill ponzi scheme. They should also record more podcasts on the art market. They've discussed Art Basel in the past and Felix has discussed the art market on the Slate Culture podcast.

Getting better and better
This is my favorite podcast, and I do not even work in business or finance. The show skates a fine line between thoughtful talk about political economy and education on the finer points of the world of finance. It is fascinating. I wish Mr. Salmon would refrain from interrupting Dr. O'Neil as much as he does, and Mr. Weismann seems to get short shrift; but the show is still massively entertaining. The most recent editions have gotten a bit more wonkish; and I'm loving them.

Tough to listen to
British accents are usually interpreted by Americans as smart. Felix has found a way to make his sound arrogant by dismissing any other opinions but his own. Would love the show, but PSA: Let Cathy finish a sentence
I listen regularly to Slate Money, and am especially relieved when Felix isn’t there to cut Cathy off when she hasn’t even made her point. She is more knowledgable and insightful about certain matters (mathematics and some finance issues) but Felix will mow her over just to make some blowhard, non-substantive point. It’s infuriating and lowers the quality of conversation. Please stop brazenly interrupting Cathy — she’s the best part of the show.

Love these three!
I absolutely love this podcast. Hands down my favorite podcast as an amateur investor and general brain operator. That being said, I have a few hopefully constructive pieces of criticism: - Make it longer. It seems like a lot of discussions are cut short for no good reason other than time. This is not supposed to happen in the world of podcasts. You make your agendas and you get to say everything you want darnit. - Felix, please let other people talk. I feel like Cathy has done an excellent job of figuring out how to get a word in over Felix who some days will not shut up or stop interrupting/talking over others, and a lot of times when it comes time for Jordan to throw in his piece, they run out of time. Unless Jordan is called on, I swear he almost never gets a word in. So Felix, BREATHE. Please. - I love Cathy. I love everything about Cathy. I follow her blog and have started reading her books due to the fact that I loved what she has had to say on this podcast. Granted a lot of times I wish she had her own podcast because I think she's head and shoulders above the other two intellectually, but hey I'll take what I can get.

Other side of the coin
I love Felix and love hearing his take on different issues he knows more about than almost anyone else. I wish they would switch up guests. Cathy and Jordan are too similar and though passionate about some things, never stretch to even try to cover the other side of an issue. They often speak just on assumption not fact, and are bleeding liberals to try core. Not that it should be an issue, but I'd like to hear the other side of some issues without them complaining about big corporations or rich people.

Love it, most of the time
For a while Felix, as many other commenters have mentioned, interupt Cathy waaaaay too frequently, but he seems to have backed off, which has really improved the listener experience. The three of the are generally really funny and have a great (and sometimes bawdy) dynamic. Occaionally it feels like they venture into topics that they haven't researched very well, and when that happens you can really tell. Also the single topic episodes (the one on podcasts, for example) tend to be less interesting than the multi-topic episodes.

Insightful, Riveting, Enlightening.
I listen to about twelve podcasts. This is the best. I learn about things that are salient ns important, always learning without ever feeling condescended to. The magic here is that the hosts cull out financial news, salient to all listeners, and not only translate sometimes arcane fiscal concepts, but also point out how they affect the lives of all their listeners. Try one, it’ll become a podcast habit that you’ll look forward to anxiously, and recommend without qualm.

A Dang Smart Podcast
There really isn't anything like this out there. These folks discuss weekly topics in economics [and no, not simply finance] with deep insights and often sharp, funny disagreements... to our benefit. The panel hits this key sweetspot of being both very wonky and consistently interesting for general listeners. I'd be hard-pressed to find a smarter discussion in other popular media/formats.

This is a very smart show and, mostly, like it. If Mr. Salmon would stop berating the other hosts, I would like it much more. For me, it is like when I used to watch John McEnroe play tennis. Finally, I quit watching because of the way he treated the others involved. Same with Felix: I'm close to tuning out.

Love it, mostly
I never miss an episode, always find the mix of topics interesting. Felix is smart and eclectic and entertaining. Kathy is smart with a strong moral focus. Jordan is smart and . . . so annoying. So many words—most of them contentless verbal filler—so rapidly spoken, before he finally gets to the point.

Sorry about 4 stars...!
But i HAD to withold one. The panelists are all very good and the podcast is lighthearted which is necessary given the subject--but, I noticed after the week Felix was gone that the show moved more smoothly--without (sorry Felix) Felix's too oft interruptions. Also Felix please be as nice to Jordan as you are to Cathy. Yes he is a millenial but that doesn't mean he's a second class citizen. He's avery nice bright man. If that feels like I'm dumping on Felix i guess I am. I listen every week and recommed the show often. So please if possible let everyone finish more of their sentences, and thanks for all the shows. I do appreciate Felix's perspective on the U.S., and his sense of humor too.

Promising but Disappointing
I was exciting when this podcast began, I’m a big fan of Felix’s. I was hoping the hosts’ conversation style would improve, but it hasn’t really happened yet. Felix is extremely domineering and imperious, always quick to interrupt and show off his superior knowledge. He doesn’t seem to have any respect for the other hosts (Jordan in particular), and it seems he believes himself to be more knowledgeable on every subject than everyone else. Every week the same thing happens: Felix turns to Kathy or Jordan to introduce a subject, then interrupts them after their first sentence. Every time! It gives the impression that what their saying isn’t worth listening to, and that they didn’t discuss the topics before taping. This was the main thing that made me stop listening, so cut it out Felix! This show should either be hosted by Felix alone, interviewing a new person each week, or the other co-hosts should be replaced with people who Felix actually respects, and might defer to. For example, when Matt Levine was on the show the conversation was great, I wish every show were like that!

I look forward to listening to Slate Money each week, and it’s even been getting better over time. a money podcast for those that do not like market tracking
This podcast surprised me. I added it on a lark after hearing it by accident on a Slate podcast feed. Now, I hate financial shows with charts and market tracking/prognosticating, but this is none of that blather. This is about how the economy works (or doesn’t) its foibles, amusing weirdness and shocking truths. (who knew the entire water shortage in California could be ended by stopping alfalfa exports to China?) Highly recommended

Perfect Balance of Personalities.
I learn a lot from every episode. Felix Salmon’s “Hello” is the best podcast intro ever. Cathy is a great moral voice in an area of media that doesn’t seem to think much about morality. Jordan Weissmann is frustratingly smart and informed for someone so young. Trying to describe why this is so good is like trying to describe why a White Russian is so tasty. I mean, it is milk and vodka (and coffee liqueur)…. but it is great. Just a delicious mix.

I love this podcast. I agree with the others that a longer podcast would be welcome. Love it
As much as I loved Planet Money, I’ve switched over to Slate Money for my fix of economic news and analysis (I should probably listen to both, but who has time?). I find them more honest and more skeptical than most economic analysts. The actual economic world is usually messy and irrational and intertwined with politics, and the Slate Money team isn’t just arguing for the supremacy of economic principles, but often tries to figure out how economics intersects with the real world and what it means for real people and what we believe about fairness and equality. Oh, and they’re fun and lively to listen to. If you haven’t listened in a while, the early episodes where a little uneven but the team has found their rhythm.

Generally fun, but predictable
This podcast is OK - not great. Felix, Cathy and Jordan do a good job of describing complex financial topics in plain English. However, their analysis is pretty standard and predictable - a left-leaning take on the relevant topic that you can get from the NY Times, NPR or any of the other standard liberal media outlets. Unfortunately, once you know the topic, you can pretty much write the transcript before even listening to their analysis.

I’ve changed my mind
I had previously written a very positive review of this podcast. That was from the summer of 2014. Since then, they have introduced advertising between segments. Other shows do the same, but those other shows advertise quickly and to the point. In Slate Money, Felix can drone on for 90 seconds about an offering. These are grating, uninformative spots. In most cases, I simply feel like they are trying to stretch something pointless to fill in the required time. These ads have entirely ruined my listening experience and I have now stopped subscribing to this podcast… Alas!

Battle of Egos
This show would improve if the hosts focused more on the content than on making themselves come across as smart and knowledgable. Cathy does a lot of jockeying for position and, in doing so, offers forth very little on the topic at hand. Either that or Felix talks over her and the opinion she's putting forth peters out. Felix is knowledgable but he could do a better job listening and facilitating the conversation. I'm amazed how patient Cathy remains after the many times Felix has interrupted her. The other guy is just that, the other guy. He doesn't contribute much. Like the other hosts he tries to make himself look smart but the information he provides is either void of a point or interrupted by Felix. This show could be great but the hosts need to do some deep thinking on how they sound to their listeners.

Interesting but too much cursing
My 7 year old son likes to listen to podcasts with me while driving to and fro. He especially likes the Slate slate of of podcasts but they all, with the exception of the political gabfest tended toward too much cursing for him. I can understand it in the XX and the Culture gabfests, but there just is no reason for cursing in a financial podcast. Even Hang Up & Listen mostly refrains from gratuitous cursing. So while most people probably are not listening to this podcast with their younger children, I still ask that the cursing be discontinued. Then I can listen with a clean slate.

Was LOVING this, but then ...
This was my favorite podcast I’d found in a while (5 stars no question). Informed people talking informatively about things that matter, obscure and not. Loved it. But I don’t listen to bad language if I can help it; so disappointed that every time I’ve checked for a new episode, it’s had that tag “explicit”. So if language doesn’t bother you, check it out! I’ll keep hoping for a non-explicit episode from time to time so I can join in the fun again.

Great Financial Storytelling
Really really wanted to go 5 stars, but I agree with some of the other mild criticisms: it is too rushed and Cathy's observations are overly subjective (not always a problem, but sometimes you just want someone to stay on topic). Overall, I love this podcast, especially how they provide the narrative for what is generally a fairly opaque world. Listen every week. Keep them coming!

A cross between the Gabfests and Planet Money
I only started listening to these because they’re in my Slate+ feed. It has a similar format to a lot of the other Slate podcasts- three segments, three people talking about the topics, but at the end they have their “numbers round” instead of recommendations, which to me seems like a direct knock-off of the Planet Money Indicator, but is nice enough. I guess my problem with it is that it seems to be halfway between the Gabfests and the Planet Money podcast, and it’s not really as good as either- the reporting isn’t as in-depth and explanatory as Planet Money, but the discussions aren’t as long or opinionated as the Gabfests. I think it should probably try to go more in the Gabfest direction and make an hour-long podcast instead of the measly half hour and take on some more contentious issues to differentiate itself more from its competitors.

Clear explainations, interesting and informed discussion and speculation
PODCAST FORMAT: The trio of Felix Salmon, Cathy O’Neil, and Jordan Weissmann dish up a well-produced weekly discussion exploring current events, trends, and informed speculation on the world of business and finance. The bulk of the 30-45 minute show serves up 5-10 minute bite-sized segments in which the hosts explain, and then discuss important news from the week. The podcast concludes with a “numbers lightning round” which allows each of the three hosts to bring up an off-topic, but interesting story via introduction of a mystery number such as “My number is $100 million, which is the bribe paid to a court in Munich by…”. WHAT I LIKE: This podcast is a great balance of explanation and exploration for listeners who do not posses in-depth knowledge of business and finance. Each host brings a very different professional background and worldview to the table. As a group they pose each other many of the questions that I want answered, and focus on explanation instead of judgment. The hosts are very good at giving some insight into the complex topics that are thrown around without proper discussion in much of the business media. As a fellow empathic, data-driven individual, I especially enjoy the commentary of Cathy O’Neil who has an impressive data science and finance background, and often frames her discussion by the ways in which the big news of the week could affect the average person. WHAT I WANT IMPROVED: Although the hosts are good at providing background and explaining jargon, there are still current events, people, and general knowledge that I wish was explained a bit more. I don’t enjoy comments like “unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last five years you’ve already heard of … but if you haven’t…” . If you don’t have time to fully explain something, perhaps point listeners to a previous episode where the background was explained in more detail, or provide another resource to gain enough context. Because the hosts live and breathe business and finance, the hosts sometimes discuss “obvious” topics that I might have to Google myself. Additionally, many of the topics discussed are so interesting, that I want to know where I can find more information. A plug to an article or other resources that you recommend would be appreciated. Finally, I would like the hosts to be more explicit about when they are discussing something which is in their area of expertise, and when they are discussing topics that they aren’t as familiar with. I get the impression that all of the hosts have a phenomenal grasp of the world of New York business and finance, but lack the macroeconomic experience to give informed speculation on some of the topics they discuss. It’s okay to say “I don’t know”, or even better, find a guest in advanced who can give a more informed view. COMPARED TO SIMILAIR PODCASTS I AM SUBSRIBED TO: Those who enjoy NPR: Planet Money, EconTalk with Russ Roberts, and The Economist: Editors Picks will enjoy that real-world business and finance gap that Slate Money fills comfortably. In terms of analytic rigor and depth of discussion, Slate Money falls somewhere in between NPR: Planet Money, and EconTalk. By design Slate Money lacks the phenomenally well-written essay style of The Economist, but it is also more approachable in its non-academic discussion.

Another great panel podcast in the Slate pantheon
Felix is a lively and capable and knowledgeable host and Cathy and Jordan are good co-panelists for him. My New Favorite Podcast... on Saturday?
I listened to the first episode and I've been a dedicated listener ever since. The 3 hosts sound very smart and well-informed. They have developed good chemistry between themselves since the beginning. (At the outset I was afraid that Felix Salmon might be too dominant, but they generally have a pretty good, balanced discussion.) Although I don't know a whole lot about finance, they present topics in layman's terms. Plus they throw in alot of extra information off-topic that is very educational. For example, in one show Felix described the structure of the Sears company, which was interesting and made me want to do more research after the show was over. The hosts generally fall in with my own views, such as lamenting the acceleration of wealth inequality, the growing number of super-rich, and the lack of accountability in the giant banks. Cathy O'Neil is part of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Overall, an informative show that makes me feel smart! :o) But seriously I feel like they help expand my horizons by discussing business and finance topics. Highly recommended! The only weird thing is the day that the show comes out - I usually get new episodes Saturday morning. Which is not really the day of the week I'd choose for this kind of podcast.

Fun, witty, and compelling review of financial and political happenings. I particularly like the “numbers” portion, where each contributor gives a number (at the start of the podcast) and later (at the end of the podcast) explains said titillating number as a statistic of sorts that ties into the week’s news. Felix Salmon's role as interrupting contrarian serves to undermine most topics the show tackles. From my listen this week, it would seem the first 2 topics were a waste of time, according to Felix. Now make it longer !
I used to enjoy Salmon's short appearances on the APM Marketplace weekly wrap, now we get a whopping 30 minutes of Salmonisms i.e. a well informed and solidly sarcastic insight into the news of the business and financial world. The accolytes, Cathy O'Neill and Jordan Weismann are equally interesting and make for a trio that could easily keep you entertained and informed for a full hour. After a few episodes, the show seems to find its pace, Cathy O'Neill sounds less grumpy. Slate Money has displaced Kai Ryssdal's Friday podcast, it is simply more insightful and subversive.

Great banter on important economic and financial topics
Tired of a mainstream review of current headlines in economics and finance? The. This podcast is probably for you. The format is a host and two contributors who have great chemistry together (although "MathBabe" gets cut off a little too often). All three tend to be skeptics of the establishment and conventional wisdom. So there is not much balance on the political spectrum. However, they disagree enough to provide for a rich discussion in the time allotted.

to Slate's Podcast line-up, after Mike Pesca's The Gist. Please don't let this one go the way of some of the other attempts at new Podcasts. Stick with it! The host and panelists are smart, quick and knowledgeable. The only change I would suggest, is to add a bit of an "Explainer" quality to the discussion when getting deep in the weeds of economic theory and practice.

Excellent Podcast with Opportunities to Improve
I really enjoy this podcast. I've listened to each episode. I enjoy hearing people with different perspectives discuss recent economics news in a respectful way. I do think there is room to improve. I agree with some of the other reviewers that at times the podcasts feel rushed. Another 15 min or so per episode might allow a more thorough discussion of each topic. I also felt like Jordan was talking over Cathy in the first episode, using a bit of a Fox tactic...."I'll win the discussion by not letting you talk!"... but thankfully that has not been an issue in later episodes. I think this is off to a great start. Here's hoping it only gets better...and a bit longer.

Would highly recommend the podcast. Felix, Cathy and Jordan come from different points of view, which makes it very interesting and informative to get their take on economics, finance, etc. I think they got the dynamic right. I decided to subscribe to the podcast after listening to the first episode. Though, it feels rushed at times and I find myself wanting more. Would it be better to extend the podcast to 45 min to get more thoughtful and in-depth analysis (please let Cathy talk!)? Or maybe focus on only a few topics. Keep up the good work. Thank you.

Money and Morality
This is a good addition to the mix of Slate podcasts I listen to during the week, but so far falls short of the topic and perspective diversity that keeps me coming back to other Slate podcasts. After three episodes, I already feel too much like I know what to expect, and am thinking "Slate Money and Morality" could be a more apt title. I would like to hear conversations on a broader range of topics, including those of academic or "how the world works" interest that may not have (or need) an obvious hook to themes like financial-sector (over)compensation, income inequality, consumer protection, the game being rigged, etc. These are good and important themes to explore, but through the first three episodes the exploration has been so consistent that it borders on a one-note performance.

I am not great at economics, and I don't have a lot of money myself, so I tend to be cautious about finance-related podcasts. This seems like it might be perfect for me because I really am interested in having a better grasp on such things - the host is great (and British), the panelists knowledgeable, and the topics suitable and legitimately interesting. The only problem is it seems so rushed, which is why I don't like APM's Marketplace. But Marketplace is a radio show that has to fit into a time slot, and this is a podcast. I'd say either cut out one topic and stay 30 mins, or better yet go to 45 minutes so we get all the info and don't feel stressed out! Well done Slate.
