What if I told you that God could be seen in the most ordinary things everyday? Take a break from the busyness of your lives to just stop & look around. Consider the things that we encounter all the time and overlook. Just think of all the lessons that we could learn from our children, in our homes, or our families. What if I told you that everyday, ordinary events could teach us extraordinary eternal truths...would you believe me? I'm BJ Sipe, and welcome to the Set Your Mind Above podcast.

- S3 E17 - Don't Let Fear Keep You From FruitWe have a summer preaching intern that has arrived, so my schedule is changing pretty significantly. I am so excited to work with him, but also...a little fearful. I'm still a very young evangelist myself - what if I mess up? What if I can't train him like others could? After an important conversation with my brother I came to an important realization...don't let fear of what I cannot do keep me from doing what I can. Well...this is just like the parable of the talents, isn't it? The master gave the servants talents according to their abilities, but the servant that was given just one was afraid, so he did nothing. Are we like him? Do we let comparison and fear destroy the fruit we should be producing for God? God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and sound judgment! #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0

- Set Your Mind Above May 20 · 12m S3 E15 - 183 Years, 2 Months, 25 DaysOn Wednesday, I had the blessing of speaking to the Sycamore church that meets in Gravel Switch, KY. The church has met in this location since February 22, 1840 (that's before the civil war!) And now here I sat 183 years later in the same place. So much has changed since that church was first established, but you know what hasn't? Well...our faith. Though separated in so many ways over nearly two centuries, we pray to the same God & have hope through the same Savior. Not only this, but consider the great cloud of witnesses that have gone on before us. Consider the fruit they have born. How different would this world be were it not for the faith of the saints that have gone on before us? #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- S3 E14 - Get Used To DisappointmentKylie took the kids out today to do three things: go to the nursery, pick up lunch from Lee's with honey biscuits, and then go have a picnic at the park then play. Well, when thunderstorms rolled in right as they were picking up lunch, their hopes of the park were dashed. We had some very disappointed kids, which was fine. But what wasn't fine was taking it out on their mom. That's never okay, and she had no control in the matter anyhow. Well...how often when we get disappointed do we do the same thing? We lash out at others, or even worse, we lash out at God as though he had something to do with it. We need to learn how to properly deal with our disappointment in a godly way, and that begins with realizing that we must be in control of our emotions. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- S3 E13 - Baby Birds & Making DisciplesOur baby birds have finally hatched! Ava and I spent the other night just watching the momma bird feed her young, and she asked why she was doing that? I had to explain that they couldn't feed or protect themselves. The momma bird's job was not done after they were born, she still had more to do until they were grown. Well...the same applies to those who are born again and spiritual infants. Our job is not simply to get people to the water - to fulfill the rest of the great commission, we must teach & protect new babes in Christ. Don't abandon someone after they obey the gospel, your job is not finished yet. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- S3 E12 - Being Citizens of Heaven with Hal HammonsWe have a very special episode today! As we stated, once a month we will be sitting down with a special guest and fellow podcaster to discuss different aspects of setting our minds above. Today, we sit down with my good friend and the host of the "Cititzen of Heaven" podcast, Hal Hammons. This interview and discussion is much longer than our normal episodes, but will be well worth your time - trust me! #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- S3 E11 - Waiting For Your Tax ReturnWe absolutely expected to owe on taxes this year, but much to our surpise we got a refund! Or, we're getting a refund, rather. It's not here it. It's been promised, but yet to be fully realized by being placed into our account. So until then, we wait. Well...our savlation works much the same way. Are we saved? Well, yes and no. We have been cleansed from sin, but we anxiously await the promise of our hope in heaven that has not yet been realized. We know it's coming, but until then, we just have to wait. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- S3 E10 - Clay Pots & Bird NestsWe mounted some clay pots on our back patio to plant herbs in for the spring. There is just one problem, the birds got to them first. So instead of growing herbs, we will now be playing host to the hatching of baby birds in nests they have made in two of our pots. Well...as I watched these birds, it reminded me of Jesus' reassuring words in the sermon on the mount. Here I watched these little creatures day in and day out find food and shelter, which God constantly provides. We are of so much more value - so won't God also care for us? So long as we seek his kingdom first, the answer to that question is yes. Not yes to all our comforts, but yes to what we truly need. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- Set Your Mind Above Apr 6 · 10m S3 E9 - Under ConstructionWhat happened to last weeks podcast? Tune in to find out! Also, we talk about the downtown area of Danville and it's current heavy construction. It's been a huge hastle to everyone, and our once beautiful and quiet downtown is a loud mess. But, it will be worth it, because when they're done it will be more beautiful than ever. Well...all of us are similarly under construction. God is working at chipping away in our lives at the things that need to go. It's not easy, but you know what? It's worth it, because when he's finished we will be more beautiful than ever, resembeling his holiness & righteousness. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- S3 E8 - DadaAll of our kids to his point have said dada before mama, and Kylie has been holding out hoping that Finley will say her name first. But ever since last night...Finley has repeatedly said dada. It is the most precious thing in the world when your children finally come to know you and call on you as their dada. Well...have you ever stopped to consider how incredible it is that we can call upon God as "Abba, Father"? We don't just have any relationship with him, we have come to know him and have the most intimate relationship possible with him as his children. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- S3 E7 - A Dog's Buried Pile of JunkMy dog is a little theif - he is constantly stealing our stuff and chewing on it. Most of the time I can fish it away from him, but when he takes it under our bed I just leave it because it's too hard to deal with. Well, I looked under the bed yesterday and, uh, things have piled up. It's so bad. Maybe I shouldn't have let it go so long, and it wouldn't have gotten so bad. Well...the same thing happens when we ignore our anger, it builds up to resentment and becomes a much bigger issue than it ever should have been. We need to do the hard work to deal with our emotions and our anger, and resolve them with others. The status quo is not true peace, not as God defines it. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- S3 E6 - Hurt People...HurtI sat across from a man currently spending some time in jail, but I realized he has been a prisoner for most of his life. He was a victim of abuse from the age of 5 on, a prisoner in his home. He sought freedom through drug use, which of course became it's own prison. Now he sat in literal prison, now seeking the only one who can set him free: Jesus. As I listened to his heart, I heard so much hurt - and I couldn't help but to sympathize with this poor man. Well...hurt people - they hurt. Do we just focus in on the hurt they cause others, or do we try and get to the root of the issue and address their own hurt? Christ saw people as broken, and it moved him to treat them with compassion which led to their repentance. Do we have that same attitude? #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- S3 E5 - Homecoming ReunionAs we got off our plane to head for home, Kylie and I watched the sweetest reunion between a little girl, no older than 2, and her father at the airport. She ran into his waiting arms, and it moved us to see their love for each other. Well...one day we will have the same kind of homecoming reunion. We will be brought together with those in Christ who have died before us that we miss dearly, but more importantly, we will come home to the waiting arms of our Savior & our Father in heaven. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- Set Your Mind Above Feb 22 · 15m S3 E4 - Little Pieces of the Big PictureI recently purchased a 1000 piece puzzle from the Ark Encounter, and I finally got the opportunity to start working on it last night. Puzzles are great because each individual piece is unique and have their own picture, but when you put them all together, they make one big picture. Well...Scripture works much the same way. Each of the 66 books are unique and tell their own story. But when you connect them all together, they paint one giant picture of God's redemption of mankind by his love through Jesus. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- S3 E3 - More Routine MaintenanceI am not used to having a hypoallergenic dog. Growing up, I had long haired dogs. They shed a ton, but their hair did not get matted. With this puppy we have now, he's had to get shaved down twice now. I thought that brushing him once or twice a week was good enough, but no. He needs daily maintenance. Well...so many of the good gifts that God gives to us require regular maintenance for us to ensure they stay good. Marriage is good, but a good marriage takes a lot of work. Children are good, but raising them right takes so much work. The church is good, but building deep and spiritual relationships takes more than a passing "hello" on a Sunday. God has blessed us with good things, but are we putting in the work to keep them that way? #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- S3 E2 - From the Top Button on DownMy son is almost three, and he wants to do everything on his own. "No, I do it" is his favorite expression. He came with me the other day to the butcher and it was no exception. He wanted to buckle himself, walk and not ride, help load the cart and unload the cart, etc. What took the most time is when he wanted to button his own jacket - except, there was one problem: he got the top button wrong. Of course when that happens, every subsequent button is off too. So we started from the top and tried again. Well...the same thing goes for our lives spiritually. We have to get first things first. Jesus said the greatest commandment was to love God above all else. Before people. Before anything. Why? It's because if we don't love God first and foremost, we won't be able to love anything else like we should either. If the top one is off, everything else will follow. When we get the top right, everything else will fall into place. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- S3 E1 - Okay...WHERE ARE MY KEYS?!?Welcome to our very first episode of Season 3! I'm so glad you've returned, and hope that this new year finds you well! In today's episode, I lose my keys - well, my car key to be specific. I spent three hours looking for it, and just above gave up hope. That was until my daughter found it...in one of their toy bins under their bed. Hmm, I wonder how it got there. I wasn't upset, I was just relieved and overjoyed to have it back. Well...that is exactly how the Lord feels when those who are lost return home to where they belong. Don't believe me? Tune in to consider 3 parables that teach us from God's perspective about how he feels when those who are lost are found. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- S2 E72 - Season 2 FinaleTune in for the season finale of this year. We will be taking a short break from the podcast, but we hope to see you all back in February of 2023! Until then, know that I love you, that God loves you, and may we all each and every day set our minds above! #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- Set Your Mind Above Nov 23 · 14m S2 E70 - Give Thanks To God...AlwaysThanksgiving is tomorrow, and I certainly know that I have so much to be grateful for. It's our first Thanksgiving as a family of 5, and that is just the tip of the iceburg. We are blessed with our church family, our friends, our home, and so many other things. God has been good to us far beyond measure. It's easy to be thankful when things are good, but what about when they're not? Well...we need to learn that gratitude is not tied to God's blessings, but much rather to his unchanging nature. Regardless of our circumstances, God is still God, and he is worthy of our thanks and praise. Even if things are hard this year, not just tomorrow, but every day be sure that you show God your heartfelt thanks in both word and deed. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- S2 E69 - Give Me vs Give TheeI recently saw a video of a man standing on the street with a sign asking for help. It said that he was hurting and discouraged and could use someone to talk to. Nobody stopped. Then he turned the sign around, and it said "free money" with cash taped all to the poster. Within seconds, a mob had formed, and under a minute, the money was gone. Isn't that the way it goes: people are more interested in being given something than giving something. Well...can we possibly bring that same attitude towards the church? If I view the church as an institution rather than the people, I will likely view it as an organization to serve me. That's not the church. The church is the people, and we come together not to be served, but rather to be equipped to go out and serve. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- S2 E68 - The Grass Is Not Always GreenerI had a panic attack this week (not really, but go with me here) when a report came out that Dan Lanning, the head coach of Oregon, was interested in leaving and taking the head coaching job at Auburn. Of course Dan was asked if this was true. He set the record straight, and taught us all a lesson too. In the interview, he said he was content where he was, grateful for where he was, and the grass is not always greener on the other side. Well...how often do we forget this as Christians? Rather than being grateful and content for where we are and what we have, we are constantly in the search for something "more" or "better". In doing this, we miss what is right in front of us. Don't ask God for more blessings...thank him for the ones he's already given. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- S2 E67 - Playing "Hairstyles" & TimeMy daughter enjoys playing with my hair and pretending to be a hairstylist. She was working on my hair last night and asked if she was almost done. She said, "these take a long, long time...like 5-7 minutes! That's forever." I laughed. When you're a kid time moves so slow, but as you age, you realize you don't have that much left. Well...Scripture speaks to the nature of our short lives, how they are like a vapor. But rather than be discouraged by this fact, it shoudl equip us with wisdom to make the best use of our time. Don't waste your most precious commodity. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
- S2 E66 - Creatures of HabitI find that the older I get, the less I venture with things in life. I eat the same things, wear the same things, do the same things, and listen to the same things. We are creatures of habit, aren't we? While that's not necessarily bad, it's important to recognize that sometimes that can bleed over into other things like...well...our prayer life. When do you pray? How do you pray? What do you pray? Has prayer simply become a thoughtless ritual in our life? Or is it truly an outpouring of my spirit to God? Let's make a habit of prayer, but let's never make prayer simply a habit. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast0 comments0
