Hello and welcome to another edition of the screen nerds podcast. My name is Michael Bergin and thanks for joining me for this quickscreen episode of Dream Horse, starring Tony and Damian Lewis just got out of the theater. I saw the film and wanted to share some of my thoughts immediately after getting out. This was a film that I've been anticipating for a long time. They've got delayed a course, one of those films and got delayed due to the pandemic. I was supposed to been released last year, they do it Sunday instead of last year and I was supposed to get a theatrical release last year but they waited delayed it till this year. And now it's dropped in theaters and so this so it's based on a true story.
Of a community in Wales over in the United Kingdom. And basically there's a small group of people in the community who come together and sponsor a race horse. They they are Syndicate. That's the the name of the group, they all go in together and pitch in money in fines to get a racehorse and kind of tells the story of this racehorse called dream Alliance and the community that helps to Foster and sponsor this racehorse. And you have Toni Collette character. Chan, who's kind of the de facto head of The Syndicate? She's the one who finds the mayor. Gets the thoroughbred.
Has the has the poll come out of it, the stream Alliance and kind of helps raise and support the horse and then you have Damian Lewis and character Howard who is the kind of the the brains behind it cuz he's an accountant and he is going to send it before to disasters in a new kind of what it was. The two goes into having a Syndicate. What all that means is for working the racehorse and everything. And so he's kind of brains of the operation. And then you have the cast of characters, as they kind of fill out the crew of what you would expect from kind of this type of film and what you were expecting. This type of film is very much a
Heartfelt film. And that's really what this film is. I think if there's anything to best describe this film is charm. A very much is kind of a product of what you would expect. A film of this Underdog Story of a community Underdog Story of a horse called what this film is that I think that having that as a film in 2021, I think is very almost very much needed for this time and can carry that were in. You really feel for Jan. Could you see a lot of the film? Through Jan's perspective of know, she works at 8. What was the grocery store Central Aid in Wales and a small community? And she wakes up every day.
Pics of food goes to work, work song.
Leave work ghost take care of her. Elderly parents comes home. Her husband is sitting on chair watching TV and after day after day after day of this and so she is not very prosperous, a lot of people move off the card up in the big city and I just kind of left behind and sell. Do you have this?
Of a racehorse in dream Alliance kind of galvanized at the community brings out the best in the community. Of course, you see the infighting that you have the conflict of whether to sell the horse when it's starting to heat up whether to take care of the horse, in the worst, you're all these different things of conflict, a kind of come up through the course of the film. But in the end, if it's the heart of it, where you see the love of the community, people love of dream Alliance and rallied around.
The horse and in turn the horse. Kind of brings the community together. And really, it's just a really heartfelt Charming. Spell the performances, I thought were great of Toni Collette. One of my favorite actress, is she? She does a great job in it and she really is the Catalyst for the film in the Catalyst for The Syndicate. Toni Collette, kind of the Catalyst for the cast in and how they come together and in and work so well together. As great as Howard. A lot of the characters are at least to me actors that I'm not well known for her know very well but they all play.
Their parts really well because you you have kind of The Eccentric guy in the group. You have the younger guy in the group. You have powers friends. Do you have
The older lady in the group, all these different kind of characters and that the people that play those roles to add to really Perfection. I thought, I would say just how they kind of fit those characters in the fit, the mold of what you would expect for film like this, he was beautifully shot. I love just the way. Not just the community, which is it made you feel like you were part of that Community, you live. There you understood. It was real. It was somewhere that you would know, even if you've never been to Wales, you would know that type of community and how it translates into growing up in a small town and knowing how to do towel Community like that. Feels like it's really kind of resonated with me that, that emotion of the community coming together like that.
and also to a kind of popped a little bit when I saw Peter, David has a small role as one of the Rival owners of racehorses there and I thought that was kind of pretty cool that he didn't have a big role, but he kind of had a
A fairly significant role as far as like helping you kind of steer the the conflict of times and just the kind of guy that you always want to root against in a sports film like this Todd. I thought that was pretty cool. Of overall, I really enjoyed it. Like I said, I would
Wanting to see it last year and it got delayed but I'm really glad that I was able to see it in a theater and really enjoyed that. I would highly recommend if you love a good heartfelt, Charming film, this one is definitely worth checking out if you love based on a true story of sports films, Beulah heartfelt films. This is a film worth checking out dreamhorse, highly recommended. So that's my dream horse. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this film when you see it or any other film has.
