Absolutely incredible
I’ve listened to well over a hundred podcasts and this one is by far my favorite. It’s the best history content I’ve ever heard. Incredibly engaging and interesting and also extremely informative. I’ve never learned so much in such a fun and engaging way. Definitely the best history podcast period. He does an incredible job of presenting the material in a way that gives you a deep understanding of topics that you may have previously thought you knew about. He also presents things in a very unbiased manner. I’m pretty surprised at the reviews that imply that he gives a political “anti-communist” one sided portrayal of history in his Russian revolution series. I personally thought that was probably his best series and it speaks volumes that my dad (who is quite conservative) and my friend (who is a communist) both absolutely loved it. Of course everyone presents every topic with some amount of bias or opinion but I think he does an incredible job of really giving you all sides of the story and letting you draw your own conclusions. And where he has opinions he tells you what they are so you can understand what is opinion and what isn’t. I am amazed at how complete a picture he is able to paint. This isn’t to say that he tells a version of history that is neutral and perfectly accurate (because that isn’t possible) but rather that he really does a great job of presenting things from each participant’s viewpoint (and from their opponents’ viewpoint), along with the facts. So you really get to hear each side and then decide for yourself on the interpretation you agree with. Honestly I think people are just irritated that he isn’t presenting a *more* politicized podcast that argues for their viewpoints. I’m sure that’s true for people on both sides. Anyhow I’m saying this as someone who is quite left leaning in case someone is thinking this is going to be super neoconservative - I really think that everyone will love this podcast if they are actually willing to listen, whether they’re a Trumper, a Warren supporter, a Bernie bro, or even a Trotskyite!

Love the concept and execution
I like the revolutions theme that runs through the whole podcast, but how you get to hear the manifestations of upheaval in a variety of places and times. The story of many important events well told, I really like this one. Brief aside - love how because he is doing the Russian Revolution there are bashing reviews both accusing him of rabid anti-communism, or being a Lenin disciple. Its funny, like Mike often is.

Addicted to Mike Duncan podcasts
I’ve discovered Mike’s podcasts relatively late (several years ago) and since than my life has not been the same. As bombastic as that sounds, as someone who loves reading about and thinking about history, I have yet to find someone who provides such good in-depth insights into historical events and is able to deliver what he produces in such fun way. Listening to him I sometimes feel I know him in person. This is important because I tried some other history podcasts and I couldn’t keep on listening for long because of a dry and drab way they were delivered. They don’t pull you into the story of the time like Mike does. With Mike’s podcasts, I am transported into the time and events and find myself thinking like people that lived at the time. Anyway, highly recommend all of Mike’s podcasts.

Impressive and Immersive Podcast
This podcast is immensely informative and entertaining, and a great way to familiarize yourself with the overarching political/historical trends of the modern era. I’ve been inspired to read further on some topics, particularly the French, Haitian, Mexican and now Russian Revolutions. Mike’s presentation is clear, with lots of dry humor and insightful observations peppered throughout. The History of Rome is a must listen too.

History Never Ends
Just heard 10-100. Bravo!!! This series is educational, entertaining, insightful, and a MUST for all who want to learn the whats, whos, and whys of world history. As Mike says, “causes become effects—-effects become causes”…and on it goes. History repeating. Will leaders ever GET IT and stop the insanity??…..I’m so sad “Revolutions” is coming to an end. Looking forward to the next project Mike Duncan has for us…

Lacking topics
It is a wonderful podcast but as I look at ten seasons of episodes I get weary of the emphasis on western history. It’s so Eurocentric. At this point, without covering one of the Chinese dynasties or the Ottoman Empire, or any African monarchy just feels like erasure. The weight of importance given to western history in 2022? It’s just quite erasing. Actually it’s quite hurtful. An educational podcast that could shed light on other empires that to this day are being used as propaganda in the countries of origin and doesn’t, fails in what could have been a goal of providing unbiased facts that people in those countries are not taught in school. I’m disappointed. More than that, I’m actually hurt. When will non white people become important enough to be represented in popular history?

Outstanding Podcast
I really wish I could give both the Revolutions and History of Rome 10 stars. It is one of the truly outstanding history podcasts out there. Mike Duncan really does his research and is very well spoken. I spent a great deal of the spring and summer on my front porch listening to the History of Rome podcast while working on projects and I was riveted by the information and learning. When we were in Paris, we spent an afternoon at the Carnevalet Museum and I was frustrated by my own ignorance of the history and pulled books out of the library to make up for that deficiency. There is so much background material that I did not know and appreciate that medium. Since the months are now colder, I listen to the podcasts while knitting which will be an ideal medium when we get to the section on the Reign of Terror. Okay, I admit it..... I knitted while watching a Tale of Two Cities! Keep up the wonderful work, and I look forward to the next episode!

Mike Duncan the Hopeless Liberal
A good example of a podcaster who’s past their time. It’s hard to listen to the host when he’s so committed to liberalism and it shows in his historiography. Do yourselves a favor and don’t listen to his Russian Revolution podcasts it’s just rabid anti communism this bias can be especially seen when you’ve listened to his other podcasts. But hey can’t be too friendly to the Bolsheviks might lose the twenty sponsors that he spends the first three minutes introducing every episode.

GOLD STANDARD! If I could rate higher than 5 stars I would.
Is there a Pulitzer Prize award for podcasts? If so, this one deserves it! Outstanding! I cannot go a day without listening to this podcast. Mike has a gift for weaving together infinitely complex individual stories into a richly detailed epic narrative of history. Voices of the past spring to life so vividly. I find myself feeling quite sorry for King Louis XVI when he gets the guillotine, almost like he was my friend. Mike talks about various historical figures in such a richly detailed way. I’ve never experienced anything similar to it: these stories spark my imagination on a level comparable to JK Rowling’s Harry Potter books. Mike has a gift for making the past come to life. The episodes are richly detailed and stories are so skillfully woven together. I really feel like I’m experiencing the history as it plays out. AMAZING!

Entertaining, great historical podcast!
Update: I am caught up and eagerly await every new episode. I recommend this podcast to everyone all the time. If you’re bothering to read this review you should listen to Revolutions. Start with whatever season seems most interesting to you they are all great! Love this podcast. The only other history podcast that has sucked me in like this one has is hardcore history and they scratch very different itches. I’ve binged my way from the beginning to the beginning of the Russian Revolution. And now I need to decide if I should start the Russian revolution, or wait for him to finish that one so I can listen to it all at once again...

Consistently Excellent
It has been a wonderful journey to follow Mike through the History of Rome and this long series of Revolutions. His skill at making sense of complex and otherwise confusing events has evolved to a remarkable degree, and I’m finding this final series on the Russian Revolution especially enlightening. For lucidity, objectivity, profundity, and amiability, he certainly deserves his wide acclaim.

Revolutions
I have been a fan of Mike Duncan for many years. I listened to every history of Rome podcast, and many of the revolutions podcasts. I bought his Lafayette audiobook. So I am a Mike Duncan fan. The episode about the execution of Tsar Nicholas and his family was wrong. It was wrong from an historical perspective and it as wrong in terms of how humans should behave. From the historical perspective, Mike did not acknowledge that the Communists’ basement execution of eleven people would forever brand the Communists as monsters. This had historical consequences for the next century. Mike ignores this. From the human perspective, Mike treats shooting little boys and girls as the fault of their parents. What is this about, Mike? My grandmother (an FDR Democrat) told her husband when she heard about it, “They even killed the children!” This was mega-bad press, to this day. This was not the execution of the family of a Roman emperor —- it happened in the 20th Century! Mike, I would ask you to think about what you are saying a bit more. This is not Charles I, where we can tell jokes and be detached from a long-ago event. You may not like Nicholas, or think he is a jerk, but he is a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church and revered by millions of people today. What happened to his family and servants was horrible. Your cavalier attitude makes me never want to listen to a Mike Duncan podcast again. Please prove to me that I am wrong and the humane Mike Duncan appears again in future. Paul M

Top 3 history podcasts ever
Mike Duncan is one of the most thorough and entertaining history podcasters out there. He has a way of sifting through the details to draw through lines and connect historical figures that is at once enlightening and entertaining. I’d say the only better history based edutainment would be Dan Carlin’s HC history. Ive listened to the French Revolution series three times, and the others almost all twice. Came here from the history of rome, his other series, which ive also listened to multiple times. I never fail to feel smarter after a listen… TL;DR this podcast is incredible

Boring and lack of substance
I have been following the Mr Duncan’s podcast for such a time that I’m already bored. Having myself came to America from a Communist country this issue is appalling to me, but I’m losing interest because is so long and out of focus of this tragedy called Communism that not sure if I finish. Besides sharing microphone with such a racist( reverse racism) like Jamelle Bouie and Ben Rhodes( the architect of a disastrous policy of the Obama administration towards Cuba) is a turn off. Recommending a book like: Reign of Terror: how 9/11 Destabilized America and Produced Trump, by Spencer Ackerman( a book that even the subtitle is wrong, Trump was elected by Obama and his far leftist policies) add insult to injury. No, I have nothing to learn from people, I know that looks petulant, but I’ m already old and don’t care.

So grateful
I followed Mr. Dunkin through the history of Rome and now deep into my fourth revolution (Russia). He has a way of simplifying dense material without skimping on the details that renders history one dimensional. The effect is a rich and engaging story where I am left craving for more. It encourages branching off so between episodes you may find yourself reading Wikipedia on peoples and concepts, all of which provide lessons on your own life and the current society we live in. That’s why I am so grateful for what Mr. Dunkin has done.

I listened to the Paris Commune season on a recommendation from the Marx Madness podcast as they discussed Lenin‘s “State and Revolution.” So obviously I am coming from a different place from the listeners who have trouble with Mr. Duncan’s politics ;) . This formerly great podcast has lost its way with endless diving into minutiae.
The great thing about Duncan’s early seasons of Revolutions and his old History of Rome was his ability to summarize and condense historical events into an easy-to-follow serial format. Those days are long gone. It took dozens of episodes in the Russian Revolution to get to the actual revolution, including something like 8 episodes explaining Marxism and the life of Karl Marx. And several more episodes to explain in excruciating detail the various ideological arguments and splits in organizations leading up to the revolution. Toss in a bunch of episodes on the Czar’s life and the lives of other major players, and it’s like Duncan completely forgot how to be succinct. Back in the English Civil War, the various ideologies of the bishops and other warring factions took maybe 5 minutes, not a dozen episodes. The major players were introduced with a brief summary that was only a small part of one episode rather than multi episode arcs. It’s a completely different approach, and it’s leading me to regretfully unsubscribe from a show I used to love. Mike Duncan, if you read reviews, take a moment to recall the joy with which you quickly summarized a decade of Hannibal doing his thing all over Italy. I want that guy back.

I’m very new to podcasts. I discovered history of Rome by listening to a Dan Carlin’s hardcore history interview. After I finished history of Rome I moved on to revolutions. I’m starting season 6. Mike Duncan is a Terrible Person
I enjoyed this podcast in the beginning. Then I heard Mike Duncan discuss politics on another podcast. He is snide and dismissive of people who disagree with him. At the same time, he’s woefully ignorant of what those people think. Great Stuff
A truly great show. I know quite a bit about e.g. the French, American, and British revolutions, but seeing them all tied together really emphasizes broader trends. It also introduced me to a lot of new revolutions that I knew about but never studied since I didn’t find interesting – like Mexico, Haiti, and South America. I expected the Russian Revolution to be a bore, partly due to its length but also because I’ve never much enjoyed Russian history, but while the early theoretical stuff was a bit of a slog I get now why people find Nicholas and Alexandria so fascinating — they consistently made the worst possible moves. It’s like they were trying to be overthrown! Looking forward to more of it, even though it’s sadly only released biweekly now.

Concerns with bias
I just heard about this podcast and decided to give it a shot. Started with season 5 episode 1, as it seemed to be about topics that interest me personally. Good enough episode. But I can’t let go of the fact that the first episode includes the following description, “...the first batch of slaves...” Needless to say, goods are moved in batches, people move (even if they are moved) in groups. I wonder who the audience is for this show but it’s a subtle indication to me that the perspective, including the producers’ and the narrator’s implicit biases, may not appeal to a listener like me. The way history is told matters, especially as it relates to the humans involved in it.

Mike Duncan pulled me in with History of Rome, but Revolutions is a masterpiece! Whether you’re a neophyte or an an academic, there is something to love about Revolutions. 5 stars aren’t enough
Mike’s History of Rome was the first podcast I listened to and set the standard for informative but truly enjoyable history, something I have always loved. His pace, details, subtle humor make his podcast a joy to listen to. Enjoy your 6 months off working on the book. I’ll be watching for the revolution to continue in the fall. And thanks for your appeal to support local businesses and the arts in these crazy days. 1/5/2021 He’s back and along with so many others I’m happy to follow the story of Russia as it stumbles into revolutions and conflict. Don’t know anyone else who could keep all the personalities and events straight for me and make very complex history so understandable 3/29/21 prayers for better time with medical issues and a safe trip home 6/7/21. Just preordered Mike’s latest book from my local bookstore (well as local as I can - I live in Lancaster and Midtown Scholar is in Harrisburg PA). Here’s hoping you reach the 10,000 mark soon

Great storyteller
If the Russian Revolution series is the last of this excellent in-depth narrative series featuring explorations of primarily European revolution, I will be very sad to see it end. Weren’t you planning on covering the Iranian Revolution next? It would be excellent to focus on a largely nonviolent overthrow. But maybe, instead, you could start a new series on Nonviolent Revolutions?! The producers of Bringing Down a Dictator (focused on Serbia) did a 1/2 hour video docs on a few of them. But the deep Duncan dive awaits!

This podcast is hands down my second favorite podcast ever (the first being the History of Rome). Mike Duncan manages to navigate the listener through the Revolutions in a extraordinarily clear way. I recommend this podcast to anyone with the slightest interest of history. One thing I love about Mike Duncan’s podcasts are the fact that you need no prior knowledge on the topic to follow along. I listen with my mom, and we are currently in the middle of the French Revolution. I am a 13 years old, and I follow along perfectly. I definitely recommend this podcast.

Amazing but.....
Amazing pod cast and the depth to which you learn is fantastic..... but I wonder how anyone can be a liberal when after listing to these revolutions the majority of the killing and craziness is caused but the radical liberals and not by the monarchist (which you keep calling conservative. Which a conservative is not. A true conservative is someone who wants LESS government and more freedom so definitely not a present day conservative). As a matter of fact I would argue that those people who want revolution and freedom but not killing and death are present day Conservatives. Those that want to produce that same result but are willing to kill and take power in some strange justification to “make” the reforms are present day radical liberalism.

Superb Stuff
As a complete history nerd, I’m glad that shows like Revolutions (and History of Rome as well, for that matter) exist I typically listen to podcasts while either working or doing stuff mindlessly in my free time. I listen to a lot of politics/comedy type stuff, which is all well and good, but I’m also happy to have something like this show. It covers a topic I’m already really interested in, refreshes me on some stuff I already knew, and almost always teaches me something new with each episode Duncan clearly does his research, and while his presentation is a bit like that of a college professor giving a lecture, I find that to be just the right style for something like this! In short, Revolutions is both entertaining and educational. Not to mention it covers some extremely important history!

My Favorite Podcast and Podcaster
Well, I FINALLY caught up after about a year. All I have to say after listening to Mike Duncan for over 2 years now between The History of Rome and Revolutions, is thank you. I feel like I have a much deeper understanding of European, South American, and Russian history, all thanks to Mike Duncan. Whether you want to study a particular revolution, or study revolutions from a broad, historical perspective, this podcast is for you. Thanks to Mike Duncan’s amazing explanations, analyses, and summaries, one can start to see the broader themes and relations that develop between the various revolutions covered. In particular, learning about the lesser known periods of the 19th century, such as the Revolutions of 1848, the Bourbon restoration, or the Paris Commune, was truly eye opening. Duncan really captures how every revolution plays into the next in some way, and how even the lesser know or failed revolutions have lasting impacts on history. Please, if you are at all interested in getting a broader view of history beyond what is usually covered in most curriculums, give Revolutions a shot. You won’t regret it one bit.

Often good, but very flawed
It pains me to write such a mixed review of Revolutions, as I have listened to all of the History of Rome and all of Revolutions up to the Russian, which I am currently listening to. I have generally found both Mike Duncan podcasts to be very good, but recently I have found his political biases too much to let pass without comment. We are all entitled to our own views, and I have found that Duncan usually does a good job of not letting his color the history he presents too much. But there is a limit, and I reached mine listening to his brief characterization of the Boxer Rebellion in China, something I already knew a fair bit about. Duncan states, "It was a popular uprising against the vast array of foreigners carving up their country" and says of the Eight Nation Alliance, "they were united in imperial alliance against any attempt to resurrect the corpse of China that they all hoped to feed off of for the next century." So we have a picture of a plucky band of rebels up against a dastardly collection of evil foreigners. He makes no mention whatsoever of the more than thirty thousand Chinese Christians massacred by the Boxers, or of the missionaries and their families who met the same fate. In his zeal to present a Manichaean narrative of the West as the root of all evil, he lionizes a movement whose rallying cry was "Exterminate the foreigners." But he of course covers the xenophobia of contemporary European leaders in great detail. None of this is hard to find (It's even in the Wikipedia page!) so Duncan almost certainly knows about it. This seems like dishonesty by omission to the point of actively lying, and it makes me question his honesty when covering other events I know less about. So in short, it's usually good, but take it with a grain of salt.

biased
I do have some minor issues with his accuracy and interpretations—his reverence for Lafayette, for example, is a bit overwrought, even for an American. One example of his entirely getting something wrong that has stuck with me is an answer he gave to a listener’s question during his 250th episode special (Season 3, Episode 30). Around 50:30 he reads a question asking which historical figure, in his opinion, does the “popular narrative most misinterpret”. During the course of his answer he states Cromwell was “convinced religious toleration was essential.” This absolutely floored me. Cromwell is still widely despised by Irish Catholics. How anyone could make such a claim while being aware of what the New Model Army did in Ireland defies my comprehension. You are a bigot.

Almost great, worthwhile anyway
As a history buff, I am always looking to keep my knowledge fresh. The format is good. The stories make sense. It isn’t overdramatized or fictionalized. That said, I feel it could improve if he either 1) just made the episodes an hour and went more in depth on each point, or 2) maybe didn’t mention every related detail. It gives a broad view, which is nice, but it seems to stay at that height. I also understand these are intricate stories anyway and the idea is to give people who may not know about the subject a coherent timeline of sorts, but for me personally that would make it five stars for me.

Mike Duncan has gone from amateur podcaster at the beginning of his work on History of Tome to a formidable podcaster and author. His first book was great and I look forward to the upcoming second. I hope you will include in history of russian revolution, history of massive hunger all around empire, which happened after revolution, as a result of mass expropriation. Farmers, for example were not allowed to have more then 2 cows, etc. Also, I recommend all your readers to read books of famous russian writer Shalamov, who spent all his life in concentration camps, because his was son of orthodox priest. One of the Best History Podcasts Available
Mike Duncan is on a very short list in the discussion of best History Podcaster on the web. As an avid listener of History of Rome (I’ve probably listened to it twice from end to end, and my favorite parts many more times), I actually think that this is a more in depth and thought provoking series. If you stick with the podcast, you’ll begin to see overarching themes in the Revolutions of the last 4 centuries. You also see some of the pitfalls and benefits wrought on societies by revolution. I think the material is relevant and the study of these key events in history can bring a level of prescience to our decisions. The stories themselves are excellent too. Each narrative has at least one character or story line you can really latch onto. Revolutions is definitely a change of pace from History of Rome. Mike goes into more detail. There are definitely a lot of names, but you don’t have to remember them all. There’s no quiz at the end. If you really want to absorb everything, take notes… I’ve found that even with a casual listen the themes and stories are easily digestible. Everyone should at least listen to the American and French Revolution Series. Personally, I think that Mike’s delivery continues to improve over time, and the Russian Revolution has been amazing, but the American and French are extremely accessible and a great place to start.

Makes Learning History Fun
Mike Duncan teaches about history in a way that is accessible and simple yet highly academic and educational. It’s been so much fun to learn and relearn about all the great revolutions on my commute to and from work everyday! Only wish I’d discovered his podcasts sooner. THANK YOU MIKE DUNCAN! Engrossing
The great Mike Duncan has come through with a worthy successor to his epic History of Rome. This podcast gives you everything you could want about history’s great revolutions, from detailed narrative accountings to the broad themes that tie them all together. Military history, political philosophy, biography, he brings it all in his characteristic easy style.

Absolutely the best presentation
I absolutely enjoyed the Part one of the Russian revolution. I binge-listened to it, as most of Mike Duncan’s other podcasts. I know a bit about this part of the world, during this particular period of time and I greatly appreciate the complexity of the material and the times it pertains to. Mike Duncan has done an amazing job of relying it to the listener in the most simple and concise manner possible. It’s a meaningful and intellectually charged entertainment.

Superb Oratory
A rich narrative, intricately woven together with superb oratory by a storyteller who is can balance the grandiosity and enormity of a moment with the humility of a scholar who has just picked up a book and read a story for the first time.

Waste of time
This is not real history. This is the uncritical paraphrasing of works written by real historians. Stop wasting your time with this podcast and read the actual books written by real historians of which this drivel is derivative.

Fascinating and well paced
Revolutions is, to me, more engaging than Mike’s Rome podcast. Maybe became it’s so much more like our world than Rome. Revolutions is not a list of things that happened. It gets even better on the second listen because you know the arc and so the details become more interesting. Just the right amount of humor-not much but an unexpected laugh every hour or so. It outlines one big revolution in western culture ( pretty much no Asia in here at all, alas) from monarchy and feudalism to whatever this mess is now. Please Mike, please, don’t stop after Russia!

Disappointed
In fairness, I'm only in season 1, but as a long-time listener of The History of Rome, I find this podcast very hard to follow. Mike sounds rushed and goes so far into detail, that the larger, meta drama/narrative/perspective of his first podcast goes missing here. It's almost impossible to follow this level of granularity, esp at the rapidity with which it's delivered. He was also SO hilarious in the HOR - and here - he just lacks the ad lib that made the Rome pod so next level. I LOVE Mike so I'll try to keep listening. I think this is just not his comfort zone.

This is so GOOD
Really an eye opener, and a great track of history in general from the 16th on. I realize now how abysmal my high school world history was. Well there's a lot to cover, can I blame the teachers? No. But my image of the French revolution, Mexican revolution , Haiti, among other subjects has been transformed.

Full Circle Goodness
I came to listen to Mike's podcasts on the French Revolution after having someone suggest it to me as a good follow up to the novel "A Place of Greater Safety" only to find that novel suggested early in the podcasts, bringing me happily full circle on the French Revolution (to the extent that is even possible - it's not). Now I'm working my way through ALL the podcasts and, given Lafayette is my favorite historical figure, I'll be first in line once that book is released!

Goddamn I love this podcast
History of Rome was great but Mike Duncan has certainly topped it with Revolutions This might be the best history podcast in the game right now Also, a nice foil to Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History Both are fantastic but while HH is massive and dense and you get an episode once or twice a year Revolutions gives you an episode a week that are easily digestible lengths that are still packed with information Just fantastic Did I say the best history podcast? This is, for me, the best podcast full stop

Keep your personal wokeness to yourself. If you get past that, and are a history student (keep wokeness out of history and learn about accomplishments) this is actually good to listen to. Great voice but only seems to hate on the United States. Not much of shocker in today’s world.

Mike Duncan’s ability to make complex topics not only clear but also entertaining is phenomenal. Listeners to his now-finished History of Rome will need no convincing, but anyone who hasn’t heard him before will do themselves a solid favor by giving the Revolutions podcast a listen.

History as it oughtta be!
This is one of the best podcasts I have heard, including more “official“ for-sale history series. Most notably: I begin knowing little about the south American and Mexican Revolutions, and nothing about Haiti. So I listened absolutely captivated. However, even the series on the French Revolution, a story I had heard many times before, was fascinating. Mike Duncan alternates between big-picture and details about various characters, but even when he gets into detail, he picks out characters who are fascinating all by themselves - or else he makes them fascinating. (I suspect he could make the most boring life interesting.) For the academically inclined he gives references (so you know this is real history, not just a story make it up), and wherever it overlaps with my knowledge, it is obvious that he is very accurate. (Also fair-minded. This is history, not a broadcast with any political agenda.) When I first started listening to this series, he had only gotten as far as the Mexican Revolution. I am only now returning, now that he is well into Marxism,So this review only runs through me Season 9, but that is enough. One very minor criticism: He begins the series with the revolution of the British Parliament against King Charles in the 1640’s which he presents as the first of the “modern” series of revolutions in Europe (and the Europe-influenced Americas). I believe he has overlooked one: the Dutch rebellion against Spain (1566-1648) which lead to the establishment of a constitutional monarchy, and had a direct link to the British struggles between king and Parliament. However, you can’t have everything, and there is more than enough here for anyone with an interest in history (or just in search of a good story)

Great History, Better Narratives
I'm all about the facts and the little details behind them, but I like how Mr. Duncan slides in a sliver of his own thoughts from time-to-time. He's a masterful research but an even better storyteller. I've listened to / read everything he's ever produced, and can't wait for his book on Lafayette. He brings a steady stream of consciousness to the historical narrative that can often be filled with drudgery. Keep up the great work!

Thank you
Mike Duncan has been a part of my life for two years now, which is very weird. And I’m only just getting to the end of the Russian revolution, I’m not even caught up yet. As I get older, I increasingly find that life is just the long and complicated process of learning how to think about the world. There are any number of ways to do that, but history has been the core of that for me. When I started listening to this show, I was a teenager, with little sense of self or ability to center myself in the world around me. I don’t mean to sound dramatic, because other influences were involved as well, but walking with Mike through history is a big part of how I found my place here. The world is more, and more intricate, than I ever could’ve imagined back then, and I am too, and Mike helped show me that. Thank you

Favorite podcast of the last five years of my life
I started listening when my sister shared with me The History of Rome podcast, and I was thrilled when Revolutions came out! Mike Duncan leads you through the story of revolution in the western world. Fantastic! What I love most about the podcast is how Mike fans the flame of curiosity; I had little awareness of the Mexican Revolution, but, after listening to Season 9, Pancho Villa became one of my favorite historical persons. The the podcast highlights just how history repeats through the decades and how interconnected the systems of this world are. Seems like just last year that Mike (Mr Duncan sorry) was giving us a “supplemental” episode on the Diggers of the English Civil war—but now he’s talking about Lenin and the rise of the Bolsheviks! Give him a listen!

Turning New Pages of History for the Average Listener
For me, Season 4 (Haiti) and afterwards is when things really take off. Includes some jaw-dropping lessons, things you (well I, at least) never learned growing up. Latin America in the early 1800s, Europe in the mid 1800s, Mexico at the turn of the 20th century, so many gaps of history being filled in. Thanks, Mike!

Absolutely excellent (4.5)
Mike Duncan is a spectacular popular historian. A sweeping command of events, names, and dates (which are the Holy Trinity of history) as well as accessible narration. I have been listening to this podcast nonstop for the last two weeks and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Since I work alone half the time, I need something to keep me focused and the dogs in my head quiet, and Duncan fits the bill. The main thing that recommends Duncan as a historical narrator is his accessibility, which is, as far as I’m concerned, the make/break of a history podcast ( Dan Carlin is, of course, the bellwether for this). But Duncan’s command of the solid historicity of his subject matter is the make-or-break of this podcast, which again is exceptional. A tremendous amount of information is dumped into your head by Duncan, and, if you’re anything like me, you’ll eat up like proverbial peanut butter ice cream. Funny, erudite, and (most importantly) accessible, Duncan presents a history of the revolutionary era of the “modern” age with aplomb. If you like history, politics, and (most importantly) a method that is actually digestible, rather than obscure listing of “what happened here when,” this podcast is excellent and well worth your time. He loses half a star with the Saturnalia stuff and a certain PC nonsense which annoys me. Occasionally, jokes make me a raspberry individual to say: pppbbbttttt!! But that, and I cannot stress enough that this podcast is well worth your time. Again, Duncan is knowledgeable, impressive, and level headed. The true “Holy Trinity,” as far as I’m concerned, of history. In summary: in many ways, the heir of Dan Carlin, a true level historian, and someone who cares for the history rather than the effect. Well done, Monsignor Duncan. Lookin forward to your book on Lafayette.

Topical
No piece of contemporary education, literature, or art has done more to help me shape and crystalize my social and political worldview than to listen to how these various revolutions actually played out, and not the 10,000-feet-up, sanitized review that I got in high school or even college. And I'm a history major! If you come out of the series on the Haitian Revolution, or the mini-series on 1848 and the July Monarchy, unaffected in any way, you're doing it wrong.

Remarkable Work of Art
Hands-down, the best history podcast in the world. Start from the beginning, revolution #1. You’ll be hooked. I listened to 5 years of this podcast in 2 months. Mike Duncan is great. He’s affable, he’s knowledgeable, and he knows when and when not to make a wise crack and/or offer an opinion. My personal favorite revolution was the Haitian Revolution. So much information that was completely new to me. I was history minor in college bc I thought I needed a business degree. Regardless, I know my history. That said, this podcast will appeal to history experts, history novices, and people in the middle, like myself. Mike has gotten busy, and current episodes are not as good, not to mention, shorter than ever before. Oh well, The podcast still deserves five stars.

I didn’t think it was possible for that podcast to be trumped but Mike proved me wrong with this podcast. I am a huge history buff and he does a fantastic job of making these seminal moments in world history interesting and easily understood since most of these revolutions people don’t know about. The Greatest
Simply the greatest of all history podcasts and the absolute standard by which they will all forever be measured. And the quality just gets better with each season, with the current season 10 shaping up to be Mike’s masterpiece. Only Age of Napoleon can match Revolutions in terms of quality but it still lacks Mike’s legendary commitment to putting out one episode after another on schedule no matter what. I hope Mike has a change of heart during his upcoming “sabbatical” about ending the show. There are just so many great revolutions to cover and it’s a subject that never loses any relevance. (Chinese? Cuban? Algerian? Abbasid? Taiping Rebellion? Not one but TWO Iranian revolutions! Think about it Mike!)

Okay until the narrator went “woke”
So we learn that the narrator says “don’t get me started on the electoral college”, points out “white guys” founded the country, and apparently doesn’t get that the 3/5 compromise wasn’t about the “worth” of the slaves as humans but a means to lessen the power of slaves states. If you can get past the annoying “wokeness” of todays history illuminati, most of the content is good.

Mike Duncan is Faithful to his Listeners
I am writing this because in a world where few things are free I have consumed hundreds of hours from the history of Rome through to revolutions and only supported Mike by buying his book “The storm before the storm” (I highly recommend it) after years of freeloading and frankly skipping ads. Through all this time I have never observed any drop in quality or appreciation for his audience. To the contrary, Mike Duncan has retained an integrity that leads him to question dubious sources and encourage critical thinking from his listeners. I just heard the news that revolutions will at long last come to an end after the Russian revolution, but I have no doubt that I will keep up with Mike’s future endeavors and return to my favorite seasons of revolutions now and then (The Haitian revolution and the Mexican revolution are excellent to start with). Thank you for over a decade of great work Mike!

Glad to hear you are giving yourself a break. I’m sure it’s not easy to slow down the pace but your dedication to the quality of your shows and your books is why you are the king of history podcasting.

Fantastic storytelling and material. If you haven’t read Mike Duncan’s recent book on Rome, read or listen to it on audible.

Fantastic
Not only is this podcast incredibly educational and fascinating, it is brimming with the charm and humor that anyone who listened to The History of Rome would have come to expect from host Mike Duncan. Every chapter/season, I am once again blown away by how much 18th and 19th century history I was completely unaware of. It really is a joy to hear it for the first time so succinctly and intelligently spoken by Mike. Even for people who are not necessarily interested in revolutions, so much other history and context is described here that it would be a disservice to yourself NOT to listen. 5/5.

Mike Duncan does an amazing job of telling a strong narrative while keeping the information at or near graduate-level. Must listen.

A great listen
Mike Duncan is a gifted storyteller and a great researcher. Like its precursor, The History of Rome, Revolutions rewards a deep dive into the series. Start with episode one. You won’t regret it.

Amazing...but please hurry with Russia!
I became an avid fan of Mark Duncan through The History of Rome, and he became an even better podcaster with revolutions. They just kept getting better and tying a bigger and bigger picture of the world for me, and I enjoy listening to them and discussing with my wife. However...the Russian revolution is dragging. He completed several other series in less than 20 episodes, and we seem to be just continuing more and more context with Russia. I like it, but we are 24 episodes in and have not yet made it to 1900!

Immersive Storytelling
Long time listener since Mike Duncan’s History of Rome podcast. His style of storytelling, along with the plethora of historical information gleaned from each week’s podcast, is what keeps me coming back week to week. I can not recommend anyone more highly for historical podcasts.

You can come in with little to no knowledge of history but still enjoy the narrative structure of this podcast and learn some cool stuff too.

Radicalizing me more by the minute
Revolutions is hands-down one of the best podcasts out there. Thoroughly researched, well composed, and eloquently delivered, it’s a pleasure to listen to both for education and entertainment.

Great Podcast
This pod (Season 10) does an excellent job of summarizing Marx and Marxism, the historical context of 19th Century Europe, and the different strains of leftism taking shape in the 1840’s and 1850’s. I started on Season 10 but it’s been wildly entertaining and informative.

Besides Mark, during the French episodes, kinda predicted what’d happen in our world from 2016 on, his storytelling is also brilliant and addictive.

Excellent
I’ve never been particularly interested in history, but after discovering Mike through Chapo Trap House I’ve been fully enthralled and have made my way through several seasons—hundreds of years of history I didn’t know I needed to learn about. I can’t fathom the amount of work that must have had to go into this, all to make a free podcast. Thank you Mike Duncan for your enormous gift!

Best Podcaster
Truly one of the greatest podcasters of all time. Not only has Mike Duncan produced consistent content, week after week, for over 10 years, he has also opened up a wealth of history to an infinitely wider audience than has ever been possible with his meticulous research and commitment to an unbiased account of what happened and why it’s important.

Best podcast period
I cannot help but rave about this podcast to any and everyone. I especially appreciated the amazing work done to make 100+ episodes of the French Revolution fly by like a summer breeze. Our world today is still so shaped by these revolutions and no one I know tells these stories better than Mr. Duncan. If I may say one thing, for whatever reason, I didn’t track with Mike’s early podcast, The History of Rome. If you are in the same camp, please don’t let that cause you to miss this amazing podcast. I will mourn the day he stops doing it.

One of my favorites!
I’ve listened to season three about five times now. I love that the seasons are structured to show the revolutionary arc that took place during the 18-19th centuries and how they all contributed to the coming of “industrialization” and the “modern age.” I also love that he mentions women’s roles in the different revolutions (see: women’s march on Versailles and Vera Zasulich). Also he’s good about eliminating the hero-worship tint that a lot of historical perspectives put on central figures. One of my top podcasts—might start my own revolution just to make sure there’s content for another season (;

Amazing show
I have listening to Mike since History of Rome. I love this take on Revolutions. He presents things in an entertaining and factual way that is educational and also short enough to be easily digestible (both in length of podcasts as well as length of seasons). Give it a shot and you will not be sorry.

Can’t believe I love this
History of Rome was great but a subject interesting enough that any history buff can enjoy it. This one is different and you have to be a real nerd to like it but Mike Duncan does a excellent job making it entertaining considering a lot of the subjects revolves around unfair taxes and parliament reformations, monarchical authorities and other “cool” stuff.

History Class but Better
Maybe you liked history class, maybe you didn't. But Mike Duncan takes some of that same material and makes it way better. The people who were just paintings or photos become real people with lives and actions of all kinds. The big moments turn into real situations. Plus, each episode is easy to understand and the important details are always clearly highlighted.

Incredible
Mike Duncan is an incredible story teller. But the stories he tells are true. I have never really understood the French Revolution, but after listening to the hundred episodes--well, I still don't--but I now know why. It's an incredibly complex array of shifting factions fighting for control. Mike Duncan turns it all into a fascinating drama, way more interesting than Game of Thrones. I listen in the car when I'm alone. It's also great listening for a lazy day or while doing a sedentary project. You can go three weeks without listening and yet somehow still come back and find it enjoyable. Each episode stands alone and links to the others. i can't say enough.

Thank you Mike Duncan
I was years late getting into podcasts in general, having always been partial to books (history, philosophy, physics, science fiction) and slow to join my fellow millennials in... most everything. However, I eventually discovered The Ancient World and, referred by Scott Chesworth, was soon devouring years worth of The History of Rome in mere weeks. Elated to discover Mike Duncan had created another ingenious podcast called Revolutions, I immediately started a new audio binge. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Outstanding
I started listening to History of Rome while recovering from surgery last fall, and I was hooked. When I was tired and in pain, this history education enlivened my brain and helped me thrive overall. Now I’m fully recovered and I have a 2 hour commute to a teaching gig twice a week. I listen to Revolutions on the way there and on the way back, and it’s made my commute something I look forward to. Having a better grasp of history is also making me a better citizen and better person. Thanks Mike, you are doing Good Work.

Perfect
Mike Duncan continues to impress with Revolutions, somehow making complex and layered historical events and making them comprehensible and even (my favorite part) humorous. It’s a little harder to follow than the History of Rome, (obviously), but Revolutions is still extremely well done and surprisingly enjoyable.

On Par with History of Rome
This is my favorite podcast. Top-tier research, quality, and execution. I enjoy studying history and this brings great fidelity and detail to things students in the US may not have had exposure to (I did not) but need to know and understand if they want to understand the world we live in and the events that shaped it.

I can’t say it enough. I discovered History of Rome in March 2019 and here it is, August of the same year and I have gleefully finished HoR(several episodes twice) and excitedly moved into this delightful podcast. I just started season 4(after listening to the French Revolution twice. Lot of moving parts there) and am so thankful for this content. I work as a brewer and use headphones for hearing protection and your podcast(and audiobook recommendations) have made my job even more enjoyable, if it’s possible. Again, thank you!!

Join the Revolutions Party Train
As with his History of Rome Podcast, Mike Duncan has once again created a comprehensive and fascinating review of some of the most important moments in the ongoing story of human civilization. Each segment of Revolutions covers the lead up to, body of, and aftermath resulting from one turbulent period of revolution. The American War for Independence, the tale of Simon Bolivar and Gran Colombia, and the Mexican Revolution, among many others, are brought to life with a high level of detail that still maintains a quick pace. In particular, the turbulent saga of the many French revolutions, from the end of the eighteenth and spanning the nineteenth century, shows us the history of a time -- a few years or a decade -- and how that fits into the greater arc of a nation's development. Revolutions is one of my favorite podcasts, and I can't recommend it strongly enough.

An Intellectual Goldmine
I’m the type of listener who lived under a rock until 2016-2017 when I started with the History of Rome. Mike’s progression through that series and then through each of the subsequent revolutions is nothing short of a goldmine. He speaks in laymen’s terms and has the ability to clearly articulate history without much bias. My runs and commutes will never be complete without his shows. Thanks, Mike!

This podcast is awesome and I really love the how Mike Duncan makes history so vibrant. However ep10.7 seems to have been posted with the metronome included. Duncan is a great historian who creates podcasts I can listen to—or tune out—depending on what I’m doing. Either way, the cadence is soothing and content always interesting... oh and funny when I least expect it. After listening to 10 seasons of this show, I see current events through the context of the revolutions that shaped them and it is soooo insightful. I adore this podcast!!!
