Who are…THESE people!?
I used to love this podcast but over the years it seems to have morphed into something else. The regular hosts seemed to have switched to the PATREON only podcasts. Speaking of which; those seem to be the good episodes with the good topics and hosts. I don’t mind donating to PATREON podcasts but in this case it feels like they are forcing into paying unless you really care about non-video game 80s movie topics.

Still One of the Best!
I’ve been listening to Retronauts for 15(!) years now and it’s still consistently one of my favorite podcasts. I’d really like it if Retronauts would make it possible to subscribe on Apple Podcasts — and other services for people using different podcast apps — it makes it easier to keep track of episodes. I know Apple takes a cut, so the Retronauts team has to make those considerations if it’s worth it or not. I just know I’d totally subscribe to one of my favorite podcasts if it was more easily accessible.

Uploading previews for paid content is a scummy move
Love this show and used to listen religiously but now they save the best topics for paid subscribers. A lot of casts do this. My issue with Retronauts, however, is that their feed has become overwhelmingly just previews for these gated episodes. It’s super scummy and just reminds listeners that the entire show has moved to one you must pay to enjoy.

This show has been around longer than video games. They were one of the first podcasts I ever listened to and for good reason. This show is great. I learn so much and am always laughing. Keep it up!

A little rough lately
I was fond of this back in the day, but attempting to revisit old haunts I’m finding it fairly abrasive to listen to, kinda iffy vibes for a game show and particularly so for a retro one. There’s far more than enough resources that I don’t need to ramble or complain much but it is a shame.

Oldie But Goodie
One of the longest running retro video game podcasts (it was originally on the roster of the dear departed gaming podcasts from 1UP.COM), Retronauts now looks at game series and pop culture from the days of yore or not so yore. Witty, knowledgable, and seasoned, this is a classic of the podcasting form.

Actually…
I used to listen to this podcast, fell off for some reason, and figured I’d give it another try. Not even three full episodes in, I remembered why I quit. 1) Some of the hosts are so full of themselves that it feels like you’re listening to “Um, Actually: The Podcast”. All too often the other voices are interrupted by the host interjecting to add in a fact that he knows (“look how smart I am”) or to offer a dissenting opinion (“actually you’re wrong because…”). It gets really annoying. 2) I don’t know how they choose which host does which podcast, but they really need to do a better job. During the Advance Wars podcast, the host admits that he just can’t figure out the game or play it without a guide. He then complains that the tutorial missions go on too long, but apparently he didn’t pay attention to them anyway? During the Street Fighter III podcast, the host says the following of the parry system (an integral part of the game): “I’ve been playing Street Fighter III for 20 years and I just can’t wrap my mind around it.” HUH?!?! 3) Political digressions. I don’t care about politics, either side of the aisle, so I really don’t want them in my video game podcasts. But I guess these guys do. 4) Since I’m being nitpicky, some of these hosts have absolutely horrible voices and are a pain to listen to. Given that some of these podcasts run for 2 hours, it can be a real struggle. Additionally, certain guests sound like they’re recording in a cavern, or with their cell phone, so the shifts in quality can be really jarring. Their are also a fair number of hosts / guests who smack their lips, stammer endlessly, or have the classic “wet mouth” sound when speaking. There’s also way too much “um”, “er”, or “but yeah” space-filling. A little audio cleanup would go a long way. This is a podcast I really want to like, but I just can’t. It’s a shame.

Just can’t help themselves
Like many other have said, leave the politics out of your podcast. Every time I think “maybe this time they will go the entire episode without bashing or complaining about X, Y or Z” and everytime someone lets me down. Just can’t help themselves. No one thinks you’re a saint because you take a subtle (or horribly obvious) jab at people or policies you don’t like. All you are doing is taking us out of the podcast or discussion you’re having, not to mention how it makes everyone sound miserable. On a podcast about nostalgia and good times… Well done. Besides that, everyone sounds like a smug know-it-all. the topics covered are almost always something that maybe 10% of the audience cares about. the little music breaks are annoying and a waste of time. Everyone just talks over each other. The only positive thing I can say is that the podcast seems mildly well produced.

Retronauts got me through the pandemic
I had heard of Retronauts for years and saw Jeremy in Analog Frontiers by My Life in Gaming and finally got into it. I’ve been marathoning episodes at work and love it. I’ve now discovered games I missed from my childhood and can’t wait to check out!

The grandaddy of Retro gaming podcasts
Retronauts hosts Jeremy and Bob have many combined years experience in the video game industry and bring a knowledgable perspective to classic gaming. There’s a passion for games as an art and the research that goes into each episode is evident. There’s a long history of episodes here, and there’s a treasure trove of content from over the years to explore. I do wonder if Jeremy and Bob have run out of subjects they’re genuinely passionate about though and if they’re only keeping the lights on because a significant amount money (via Patreon subscriptions) is rolling in. Episode have begun to repeat topics with “greater depth” and “more granularity” than before and it’s rare to hear both Jeremy and Bob on the same episode anymore and sometimes neither of them appear. This isn’t to disparage the people filling in as “guest hosts,” they’re doing a fine job but it’s just not the same without Jeremy or Bob hosting. It feels like a different Podcast. That said, the show is still better than most classic-gaming podcasts and is almost always provides an entertaining discussion around much-loved games so I shouldn’t complain too much. Recommended, but start from the beginning!

I don’t know how else to say it, but this is the best retro gaming podcast on the internet. These guys are great a super knowledgeable about video games. Thank you Jeremy and Bob! So much. Good podcast about old stuff
I like Jeremy and Bob a lot, even if some of their guests aren’t as good ;) They know much more about games and history of games than many in the same space, and while they do share their feelings, it is often within a well researched and professional space. I will say that I listen to them a lot less recently, as their interesting topics are often behind a paywall that I just can’t afford right now.

Mixed Bag
I’ve been listening since the 1up days, but I’ve faded recently. You have to keep a separate app on your phone to listen to this podcast because they’re making a moral stand against Spotify or something but end up on the same podcast network as Adam Corolla occasionally. If you don’t subscribe to the Patreon (which I have) your feed gets filled with spam “preview” episodes, and the actual episode doesn’t always come out later. Also you have to have played the episode’s subject, because the loose conversational nature means someone coming in fresh will be better served reading Wikipedia. So if an episode only serves my interest sometimes in between pointless “previews” and is as informative as a Reddit post, I don’t listen regularly.

Amazing podcast!
Always well researched and the discussions are always great. All the triggered conservatives need to stop whining and go find a safe space. The same people who claim they don’t want to hear politics are the same people who would be praising them if they were vocal Trumpers. When they say they don’t want to hear politics they just mean they don’t want to hear politics they disagree with. Everything is politics. If the lead character of a game is female or a person of color it’s considered “woke politics” to conservatives. There’s no getting around it. Someone actually said these guys were “radical leftists”. Something as simple as disliking a sexist portrayal of a woman in a game is enough to get you labeled as a radical. Anyway, awesome podcast. Highly recommend.

Always with the politics
I try to find gaming podcasts that actually just stick to that topic, but I have come to find it is impossible to find because apparently every video game podcaster is an miserable leftist that can’t let go of politics. Please just stick to video games and leave the politics out of it.

Great, thorough discussion of retro video games
I only recently discovered podcasts and was interested in listening to some covering retro gaming. I started Retronauts at the beginning of the list offered in the iTunes podcast app and it was a really pleasant surprise! Jeremy and Bob are very knowledgeable on the subject and you can tell they’ve lived and played through the original releases as I did growing up in the 1980s and then through the further offerings into the 1990s and 2000s. Jeremy, Bob and their guests are very enthusiastic about their experiences with games and the gaming community. Their conversations are always interesting and allow me to reminisce about my own experiences playing these games in my childhood. I enjoy the podcast crew so much that I end up listening to ones with topics that I’m not familiar with just because I enjoy their discussions. Thanks for providing a quality listening opportunity for us all!

Bummer
Oh awesome, they’re covering a game I love! Oh wait, it’s just a preview of a Patreon-exclusive episode... I get that they need to make money, so sure... do Patreon-exclusive episodes or whatever you need to do, but I’m not a fan of preview episodes appearing in my feed and getting my hopes up that it’s a full non-Patreon exclusive episode.... that’s just a bummer.

Sometimes can be really interesting
One of the things this podcast did well for me were the ads of other podcasts of the Greenlit thingy. Why? Because on those you don't have to listen to Jeremy Parish... now, other reviews have described best why he can be a pain to listen to. The best episodes are the ones where he almost doesn't say anything and isn't trying to moderate every sentence said or take personally a correction made to him (apparently if he doesn't know everything it's normal, he's just human) I actually don't care too much about the political stuff, at this point I have learned to shut off my brain when they go about that stuff sometimes. Nonetheless, some episodes are pretty good and that's why I'm not going to delete it, and also why upon reading more about this podcast, I might go to the very first episodes to see if it really was that much better.

They just can’t help themselves
The bones of a really great show are here. When it’s at its best it’s both nostalgic and informative and a really great way to look back at some old classics. Unfortunately it far too often goes down one of two rabbit holes. The first is that the group devolves into a bunch of hipsters that want to tell you why the game you loved is actually garbage, usually over some arbitrary reasoning. The second, even worse tangent is the reason I’ve unsubscribed after years of listening. The hosts subscribe to ultra left woke fake liberalism that they like to wield as a bludgeon. If you disagree with said fake liberalism in any way you are obviously a Nazi. I took a break during the reign of the orange man because politics ruined the show. I thought it was safe to return. I was wrong. Pity, this could and should be a great show.

Always evolving
To anyone disappointed with the turn this show had taken, I recommend just listening to Jeremy’s YouTube channel (if you subscribe to YT premium, you can even put it on in the background like a podcast). It’s the informative celebration of old games this show used to be more of the time. It also has the old model where you can donate to the Patreon, but the channel hasn’t turned into an informercial for paywalled content.

Love The Music
I learn something new every podcast but they can be hateful at times for no apparent reason. Huge egos for a bunch of nerds. Pod would be perfect if they didn't say rude stuff about topics they're uninterested in. One episode was slanderous of Sonic and another, very dismissive to Pokémon. Very rude to the girl, who I liked the most, I believe her name was Kat.

If you can get past that they are leftist hipsters and that Bob Mackey is a total spaz, the show has lots of informative content. What makes me (a retro gamer) want to spend my time listening to other retro gaming podcasts is more of a feeling than anything. I feel they approach gaming as a job, everything is critically reviewed and they seem to lack the love and fascination for actually playing games.

It's All About the Games
When these guys focus on games, they do a great job, and Jeremy's interviews with game developers and folks involved in the retro-gaming / emulation world are some of the best podcasts I've ever listened too. However, they seem to be driven to include middle-school level socialism (they seemed convinced that Europe is full of socialist countries instead of the capitalistic, market drive economies that they really are) in most of their episodes. It becomes very exhausting as they go on their hate America (especially the mid-west, apparently if you don't live on a US coast, you are some sore of sub-human monster) tangents. Really hope they get back to focusing on the games, as when they do, they are very entertaining and informative.

Not the best and hosts hold a lot of contempt for their listeners.
Far better retro games podcasts out there. I used to love this one until I found out that Bob Mackey and Henry Gilbert were making up facts and acting as if they did research on the games. Sad for a once great podcast. You may end up a fan of this podcast, but know that you will eventually have to pay to get episodes on time regardless of the heavy amount of commercials played in each episode. also, Bob Mackey and Jeremy Parrish have such contempt for many of their listeners as evidenced by their twitter feeds.

One of the best
Easily the best researched, most informative, and always entertaining podcast on video game history. Actually, boiling this show down to the “video game history” label does not do it justice at all. The hosts cover a wide range of topics that are centered around one aspect or another of video games or related media and engage in a deep dive and discussion. The subject of each episode often varies greatly and thus keeps the show surprising and always interesting. Sometimes you get an analysis or thoughts on a niche series or piece of hardware, sometimes you get a great interview with a game creator or talent. Despite currently being in times of quarantine, the audio and production quality continues to still be some of best out there. I’m sure they don’t read these but, Jeremy Parish, Bob Mackey, Henry Gilbert, and Benj Edwards- thank you for the hours upon hours of content created and provided to your listeners over the last bunch of years. It’s been a comforting distraction to be able to dip into the archive during 2020. Anyone still listening to the free app, come on, join the Patreon. You won’t regret it.

Nostalgia Examined
Retronauts has been exploring old games and expanding our understanding of them for so long it's retro in its own right, yet it remains fresh. Jeremy, Bob, their regular guests, and the occasional interviewee all bring their expertise and their wide variety of perspectives to a topic near and dear to our hearts. Assessing retro games with a critical eye is tricky since most listeners are bringing their childhood experiences with them. Retronauts has found a way to respect that--that love is why we're here--while being able to critically analyze these works of art and technical achievement.

Essential for communicating video game history and culture
Retronauts has been one of my go to weekly podcasts for the past couple years! Bob and Jeremy have had a decade plus to refine their format and they use their experience to draw out the best discussion from their myriad guest hosts. I’ve been a Patron supporter during most of that time and it has been worth every penny! Quality podcasts are infinitely more tenable with a steady income stream, so I am happy to support them. Plus it allows them to bring in additional contributors like Diamond Feit to provide bonus This Week in Retro articles and mini-podcasts!

Retronauts good - reviewbombs bad
I've listened to the Retronauts episodes that interest me for years now. I especially like the episodes that cover series/general topics because it gives me a chance to learn about games I've never played. It's also really cool to listen to episodes about games that I like that came out before my time or when I was too young to experience the cultural aspects of because of the Retronauts hosts ability to share so much of their personal histories and experiences in digestable ways. (Jeremy Parrish' Youtube Retrospectives excel at distilling the culture around the games too, by the way; especially recommend his series on VirtualBoy.) I've noticed bad reviews lately salty about paywall content and plugs, and felt I had a responsibility as a longtime listener to go out of my way and create an Apple account to share my experience, seeing that their free content helped me get through lots of 8hr days at a job I hated, and I always wondered how they got by with so little advertising. They only plug stuff at the very end, so you could just hit skip at that point - and they have hundreds of episodes available on my podcatcher, the dishonesty in these reviews make them seem extra malicious and the Retronauts' crew all seem like great guys, who always *try* to have positive things to say even about works they aren't as versed in (like Sonic games)

Great hosts, great regulars, and great guests. Even if they’re covering a game that I’ve never played nor had any interest in, their passion, humor, and well researched commentary always keeps me interested and engaged. I couldn’t recommend it more. Fantastic work

Retro Gold Standard
Jeremy Parish practically pioneered the retro gaming podcast format back in 2006 and has a wealth of information on so many topics through a lifetime of interest in videogames and dedication to collecting and preserving knowledge (his Youtube channel is great as well). Along with the always entertaining and knowledgeable Bob Mackey and a collection of fantastic rotating guest hosts (though we could do with some more frequent Ray Barnholt appearances), this podcast always features great discussions both on my favorite games and gets me interested in topics I'm not as familiar with. It's the perfect thing to accompany me (or any retro gaming fan) on a run/workout or a long drive.

Funny, Nostalgic, Smart
Jeremy and Bob are two really professional and compelling hosts who will guide you through a variety of video game and video game adjacent topics. These guys are pros: they put in the time and work to thoroughly research their topics and have a rotating rogues gallery of equally informed guests. This is a real slick product. Scroll through the eps and chances are they’ve discussed some of your favorites. That’s how I got started. But I would also encourage you to listen in on dives into more obscure consoles or franchises. You’ll probably learn something cool.

My favorite games-related podcast.
Retronauts is a joy. Even if you’re familiar with a game being covered, you’re sure to learn a thing or two. Its about old games, but it’s not just a nostalgia trap. It’s deeply researched, and the hosts always work to put games in the right historical context. If you like old games, you can’t do better.

Yay
This is still the best retro gaming podcast around! I love all the hosts and their knowledge and enthusiasm for all of the different subjects they talk about is on full display every time I listen. I’ve particularly enjoyed the occasional interviews they’ve done, the one with Jennifer Hale was fantastic. Another recent one I loved was the Castlevania I episode, and I must say that Mr. Parish was correct about Haunted Castle being trash. Luckily the rest of the games were great and fun to hear about, so seriously, give this one a listen and subscribe to the Patreon! I love getting episodes early!

Their knowledge of retro game history is encyclopedic! There is a wealth of content in this podcast covering almost every corner of the retro world. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to learn more about how much old games can still offer, both in terms of historical value or sheer fun.

Not what it used to be
Sooo you just removed a huge section of your podcasts from public feeds? Seriously? And the ones you put out are GARBAGE, or a 10 min clip locked behind a paywall. Greedy as hell, no way im giving you $5 for what we used to get regularly and with ads, mind you! Unreal how greedy these guys got, all they do is beg for your money while releasing inferior content. Do yourself a favor and use your money/time elsewhere. This isn't the podcast it used to be, its turned into a joke.

I just don’t listen much anymore, unless it’s an old episode. I understand having some premium content, but it’s become every other episode, with the regular ones seeming like filler. A Show No Longer Noble
Update: Sadly, Retronauts hasn't really evolved much since my earlier review. Indeed, it's actually gotten worse, with ads and locked content and leftist politics and a somewhat arrogant, passive-aggressive host in Mr. Parish, who can't quite hide his superiority-complex. Some shows are better than others, with the best still fun and fascinating, and the worst having hosts and guests alike tripping over their own facts and memories. Still worth an occasional listen, but probably not a subscription. Original Review: I've been a long-standing listener of Retronauts through almost all its various incarnations. It's always been a decent show despite the constant turnover of its hosts, but with all the newer retro-themed shows that have sprouted over the years, is this one still worth seeking out? The short answer is...yes, most definitely! But the long answer is...a little more complicated. The show is primarily run by two leading hosts, Bob Mackey and Jeremy Parish, with Bob essentially playing the enthusiastic, likable one while Parish provides most of the brainy commentary. Each episode usually covers a specific series of games (Sonic, Yoshi, Castlevania), or a specific console, or a specific period of time in video game history. In addition, so-called micro-episodes are also offered, which focus on themes, games, and events that can be adequately covered usually within ten to fifteen minutes. For the most part, this format works, although, like anything, gamers might find themselves disappointed in the topic of any given week. The show does have one main failing, however, and this is inconsistency. Some shows are indeed stimulating, with some great words of insight and wisdom shared by hosts who seem to truly know what they're talking about. Others, unfortunately, come off as rather slapdash, with the speakers, (and sometimes, even their guest "expert") bumbling over a game's details, with the group basically picking each other's brains for the right information. And this happens quite often. But as Bob Mackey once said, "It's free, so why do you care?" (Or something like that.) And perhaps he's right. Also significant, for better or worse, is Parish himself, who either dominates the episodes or remains mostly silent, depending on his interest and expertise on the given topic. The pattern is something like this: The others: "The music in Harmony of Dissonance is not very good." Parish: "I actually think the music is quite good. Perhaps it's atonal for a reason." The others: "Oh yeah, the music in Harmony is pretty good." And this happens a lot, with Parish either changing everyone's minds, or everyone simply acquiescing to his opinion due to run-time, respect, fear...I really have no idea. Lastly, the show's Patreon backing should be mentioned. Although I'm not a donor (yet), there's been a small amount of controversy whether the Patreon funding is always well spent, with regular cross-country flights conducted just so the gang can get together physically for another recording in California. Maybe there are other reasons for the constant commutes, but on the surface it seems an extravagance when there are other ways to record a session long-distance. Furthermore, the show has also begun using ads--a lot of ads--which not only cheapens the show a bit, but also seems egregious due to the Patreon support it already receives. But if the funders are cool with it, then no matter. Overall, despite some kinks and wrinkles, Retronauts still comes recommended after all these years. The guys are smart, experienced, and educated, and usually provide a satisfying walk down memory lane. Nevertheless, I'll be withholding that fifth star for now...

Used to be amazing.
Used to be one of my favorite gaming podcasts despite sometimes one of the hosts dominating the conversation (Bob on Yoshi Island for an example) I usually find this show entertaining and informative. It got me to try Dragon Quest which I love. But this new switch to the patreon locked episodes is awful. I get that the guys want to make money, but not knowing a schedule of what is going to be behind the paywall makes for an uncertain spending for me. It seems the better (episodes I’m more interested hearing about) seem to be behind the paywall, but nothing in the free feed seems interesting. I don’t think I’ve listened to any new episodes this year :(

These guys have been amazing for years. They often have guests that bring an interesting perspective on the topic. My only complaint is that they try to stick to a time limit and once in a while they don’t dive as deeply as I would have hoped. But that’s fairly rare. Yes, they do remind you of their Patreon in every episode. Work has value. This podcast is a product of a lot of work. These are not a couple of guys just shooting the breeze or riffing in a topic. The effort and craftsmanship shines through, and Retronauts is worth a contribution.

Fun, informative, occasionally off topic (but worth it!)
Been listening for about two years now. The long talks make this podcast great while driving and hiking. The hosts have an interesting meta-element to them where they’ll discuss their own history in video game journalism while discussing games themselves. Some will find this annoying, but I like it, as I get to contextualize where they’re coming from so I get their perspectives as historians / reviewers. They occasionally ramble and get off topic. ~80 percent of the time it’s relevant and a good diatribe, but the other ~20 percent leaves me feeling a bit too lost in the fold. But the majority side makes it worthwhile. I’ve learned a TON about roguelikes, RPGs, and action games that I wouldn’t have sought out on my own. Plus now I need to play “Tower of Druaga”. There’s a lot of complaints here about the hosts’ political leanings, and I don’t really get that because they discuss politics only when it comes up in the game (like in Bioshock) with a couple references to how they don’t like Trump. Out of the maybe 200 episodes I’ve heard, this has come up I think twice, and they were always off-hand with a joke about the modern era before getting back on topic. If a couple errant words about Trump not being good is going to cause you to go completely off the handle and ignore anything else for the rest of your day, then yeah, a podcast that brings it up two or three times in their 300+ run probably won’t be for your blood pressure (and you should probably get outside).

I used to really like this show during the 1up days, but it’s become a bit stale and lacking in enthusiasm. Even worse, it’s kind of morphed into chapo trap house with video games due in large part to the hosts, but especially Bob (who seems one bad day away from going postal) and the west coast guys. Great Show, But Jeremy Needs to Chill!
I love this show and look forward to every episode, but I really wish Jeremy would ease up a bit. It seems like in every episode he hosts that he chastises and silences the other guests whenever they veer off he tightly scripted syllabus he’s put together for the topic. These are always natural digressions and asides, and Jeremy’s reprimands add this weird tense, school marmish vibe to the show. Chill out, man, it’s a conversation not a PowerPoint presentation!

Great podcast I wish I’d found years ago!
I’m right in the wheelhouse for this podcast, being a life long gamer in my forties. Jeremy, Bob, Benjamin, Ben and others touch on a variety of retro gaming topics and always make it interesting and entertaining. If there was one thing I wish they covered a little more it’s 90s computer gaming, especially RPGs, but that’s just because I spent a significant part of my college time hacking save files and playing old school PC RPGs. In any event, I became a patreon supporter and am currently mining their enormous backlog. Keep up the good work, guys!

Not what it used to be
I’ve been a listener of this show for years, since it’s early days on 1up.com. At its best, Retronauts was run like a genuine history podcast. Episodes provided all the necessary context to help the audience better understand the games of the past. When did it release? What came before it/influenced it? What was contemporary, and what came later that it may have influenced? The tone of the show was thoughtful and careful. Rare was the flippant joke or dismissal. In the last year or so, the show has changed for the worse. First is the increasing presence of politics. I don’t actually disagree with the overall political stances of the hosts, but I still think it is all too much. This is a show about retro games and analyzing/documenting/discussing them. Talking so much about modern politics robs the show of time that could be spent talking about the their actual topic(literally - some episodes fail to go through all the planned notes because the hosts got too much off topic. This used to be squashed in older episodes). It also makes the episodes feel more dated (or at least they will feel dated in a few years). I can’t help but feel as if the political chat is largely there to strike the egos of the hosts. It is not a good look. The current geographical distance of the two hosts mean some episodes are recorded by only one of them. This leads to many a show where host Bob Mackey just invites a bunch of his Bay Area friends on to shoot the breeze. These people do not all have knowledge of or interest in the historical details of these games - if I were a Patron of the show, these episodes would have made me halt my donations. As for host Jeremy Parish, I will say he is by far the best gaming journalist I have ever followed, and I will always admire the heck out of him. But in 2019 he seemed ... off. Either he is burned out or depressed, or something. He gets snippy with cohosts, and he no longer prevents off topic chatter from taking the show off the rails. His research is also dropping In quality - too often he has no answers to questions he would have looked up in the past. After being a regular listener for years, I noticed i was having a growing backlog ad 2019 wore on, and I think I gave up for good when most the episodes went Patreon-only. Maybe one day things will shape up again, but for now it is not worth my time.

Great Retro Games Podcast
Been reading the reviews of this podcast for a long time and they used to be really good. But now people keep injecting their politics into them. We get it! I found Retronauts a couple years ago and began downloading tons of episodes to listen to on my commute to/from work. I couldn’t get enough. Loved the intelligent, interesting deep dives into retro games and game companies. Fast forward to the last year or so and it has become nearly unbearable for me to listen to any new episodes. And I’ve tried. Desperately tried to continue to do so, as I love the general format and idea behind the podcast, but maaaan, it has become so in-your-face political and anti-Christian/conservative that I can no longer listen. I get that the majority of gaming podcasts are liberal, atheist, leftist groups of individuals. I’ve become accustomed to a mild level of random jabs and jokes and ignorant Christian/biblical-oriented comments that are made in nearly all of them, but this show and its hosts have gotten to the point where it’s just downright disrespectful and even hateful. The mentality is,

Great show if only...
Absolutely love the show. Been following these journalists since the 1up days (RIP). That said, I come to this show to escape the world and bask in nostalgia. It continues to get harder and harder to do this. The hosts constantly, several times an episode, feel the need to inject their hatred toward, well, anything and anyone (especially Christians/Mid-Westerners/etc). You know, as a “woke” West Coast-er, I still find this kind of behavior disgusting and off-putting. Although they have every right to say these things, it’s unnecessary, offensive, and hurtful to what I’m guessing is more than half their audience. It’s a real shame. Yet another show ruined by journalists who claim to be tolerant and progressive, but with their actions express the opposite.

I feel bad for Bob
Most of us go through a phase where the world seems simple, the grown-ups got it all wrong, and everything will surely be great if we just foist our worldview onto anyone who’ll listen. As with retro games, so with politics. Graciously, most of us live that out of our system after high school. But then there’s Bob.

I gave you guys four stars initially, and enjoyed the show for the most part but lately your episodes have been kinda bland and fewer episodes that even peak my interest. Also we get it, you are all super left leaning. Heard the second episode saying how evil capitalism is. You wouldn’t have gaming without it. In fact, creating a podcast about a passion and getting money from patrons, enough to not have another job sounds like capitalism to me. Retronauts has been scratching my retro itch for as long as I've listened to podcasts. Jeremy, (the OG) and Bob (erstwhile savior from the 1UP era) have honed their craft incessantly, but not too seriously. The rotating cast of regulars can make things uneven, but I appreciate the range of content and styles. You don't get this combination of offbeat nostalgia, relevant history, and primary source interviews on any other podcast (regardless of topic).

Content has gone downhill
Although this show is the grandfather of retro gaming podcasts, and it is also the reason why I now have a hobby of listening to many gaming podcasts, I feel that it sadly has gone a few notches downhill in the past few years. If you want the ultimate Retronauts experience, listen to archived episodes from back when it was a 1up.com podcast. Back then, the guys had the luxury of having nearly unlimited access to subject matter experts and personalities. It also was nice to hear the conversation and debate at the table that came organically from these crews. The shows these days are anything but organic as it seems like Jeremy and Bob either race to the finish of their recording session, slapping hands of anyone who veers away from their episode’s outline, or complacently let lesser guests (looks toward the cringeworthy Retronauts East crew) dawdle around and stretch topics out for 3x their natural length. All of this is probably just a function of (both the show and folks) growing older and moving on to lives that don’t totally revolve around video games, so I kind of get it. But there is better stuff out there these days. I do criticize much though because I loved what Retronauts used to be, and there still is a great podcast in there somewhere.

A pretty good retro-gaming podcast
Informative, and fun video game podcast. Great to revisit older game titles with a mostly engaged cast. A couple of cast regulars seem to struggle with games originating outside of the US and/or some topics which leads to some awkward conversation dynamics. Other than a cast nitpick, this is a nostalgic easy-to-digest gaming podcast that doesn’t induce the FOMO stress many other modern gaming-centric podcasts can create with their release calendar focus discussions.

Miss the old days
I’ve been listening to Retronauts every week since the 1up days. The Contra episode made me miss the old schoolers. Having Shane and Ray on was great, and it felt like they really added a lot to the episode, which brings me to a point I feel should be made. Lately, I find that it seems like some episodes are lacking when it comes to information and discussion on the game or subject of topic. I also find it very frustrating to listen to guests who haven’t watched or played the topic as well. I’m not a supporter on patreon, but I have recommended this podcast in the past to friends and other people so maybe what I wrote here will be taken to heart or maybe it won’t. Anyway, thanks for continuing to do the podcast even if I personally haven’t enjoyed some of the direction of it as of late.

Pathetic
Was enjoying a few episodes until ep. 163 in which the hosts deride objectivism (FYI: someone who believes something that does not align with reality is not "subscribing to their own truth", they are delusional), libertarianism, republicans and capitalism, and promote censorship (they discuss preventing people from reading a specific FICTIONAL book and how anyone who reads that book will become a bad person (Atlas Shrugged)). If you're into group-think and against independent thought then you may like ep. 163.

An institution!
Retronauts is easily the best podcast about retro games. It’s usually well researched, and every host has a deep well of information and history with the games they’re discussing. It’s also super entertaining! They always manage to find an angle to make discussing even kind of boring games interesting, by going into the context in which the games came out or the development story behind them. Highly recommended!

This is one of my favorite podcasts for years running! I love Jeremy Parish’s point of view on most of the games. Bob Mackey isn’t my favorite host but I do think that he’s good and I’m likely just being a grumpy old crank who’s not taking to the “new” guy who’s been here for several years now. All of that said, I just listened to episode 227: Console roguelikes through Mystery Dungeon. NEVER, NEVER, EVER allow John Harris on your show again! A review from a former listener
I've been listening to Retronauts since the 1UP days. I even backed the Kickstarter revival a while back. So why am I a former listener? Well, unfortunately like practically every major gaming news site out there, the Retronauts crew have adopted a radical leftist/radical feminist editorial style -- to the detriment of the actual content of the show. Every single game that features some sort of nudity or sexuality is denounced as sexist. Nothing is taken in historical context nor is there any nuance. It's "just bad". The hosts clutch at their pearls and groan when discussing any sort of "sexy" female characters. Same goes for any sort of violence towards female characters. For example: They go out of their way to show how upset they are by the cover for Double Dragon 2 becuase it depicts a whip wrapped around the neck of Linda; a character in the game that is trying to KILL the protagonists. Ridiculous. Despite the fact that this character is complicit in the violent kidnapping of your girlfriend and god knows what else, she must be treated with a soft hand -- after all, she's a woman. C'mon guys. Additionally, almost every episode features some sort of crack or cheap shot at conservatives or Trump. Does EVERYTHING have to be political? It's exhausting. Despite the constant political nonsense and male-feminist handwringing, the show can be genuinely insightful and entertaining -- as long as you can stomach the political/feminist nonsense. Guys, drop the politics -- please.

Long time listener...still very good but
Been listening since the 1UP days and this is still a very good retro gaming podcast. Due to the definition of “retro” changing with time they cover PS2 era and even more modern things nowadays. That’s fine but I would rather hear about weird older stuff. Still very listenable no matter the topic unless Henry is on the show. He’s an instant show skip for me.

“Socialism is a good thing”
I enjoyed the majority of this podcast (save for a few guests who would talk over the hosts). Even when Bob and Jeremy loathed a game I grew up loving, or vice versa, it was mostly a pleasant listen. However, this morning I opened a new episode to hear “Socialism is good. The end.” I did not come to this podcast looking for a political statement, and will be unsubscribing.

Amazing Discovery
Since I've found this podcasts few weeks ago, I've been feverishly searching their archives for other shows I have missed but need to listen to. Hearing them speak at great length about Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, Zelda, and other games I love is refreshing. I look forward to other episodes on RPG's (like Lunar). Keep up the great work. Jeremy--I absolutely love your deep dives into the music of video games. These are always super cool. I bought the christmas one you recommended last December. Awesomeness. Thank you

Conversations from the Industry
I love this podcast. Not only do the Retronauts provide comical, seemingly candid conversation about retro games, their roles and history with the industry and gaming journalism provide a fresh “behind the scenes” perspective. They’re not just spitballing about trends and griping about flaws, these guys have spoken to some of the biggest names in video games first hand, have years of experience in journalism and/or the game industry under their belt, and sprinkle in great history and background info not obvious to the average consumer. If you’re into pop culture history, video games, retro gaming, game collecting, or even just talk radio from experts in their field, give Retronauts a listen.

I wrote this review, and I hate reviews!!
Listen guys, I almost never give MeowMeowbeenz, but Bob and Jeremy are total fives, Kat’s a five, the loud guy is a five as well. I am, at best, a three pretending to be a four. Their new-beenz are good, their old-beenz are good. Just good-beenz all around. Also, the Bob-complainers are total twos, maybe even some ones in there. They’re not worth the beenz, just ignore them. Seriously, he says a political thing for two seconds every 5 episodes or so and suddenly he’s the second coming of Louis Farrakhan. Nevermind the straight knowledge dimes he drops about the industry and the obvious love he has for the medium, nah he’s obviously a Soros plant sent to infiltrate gamer culture, whatever the heck that even is. Anyway, Earthbound episode is fire, Suikoden episode is fire, all the console episodes are fire particularly the ps2 one, Resident Evil episode is fire even though Jeremy be trippin’ in it

Devouring this great show
I've been pouring over this show. The hosts bring a wealth of experience and research to the table, and provide tons of details on each topic/game. I love that there's a lot of objectivity presented. Subjectivity is cheap. If I had one request, it would be to talk more about what it's like to actually play each game. The info on release date, developer, etc is great. But tell me about the first level, tell me where it goes from there. Give me the experience of the game. The hosts always say they're going long, but I'd gladly listen to twice as much content on a single game, if there's care put into it.

The original and the best
There’s plenty of retro games podcasts and YouTube channels these days, but when I first started listening to Retronauts (probably a decade ago!) they were the first doing it. The show has had ups and downs over its entire life, and the introduction of the Retronauts East hosts was a tough transition, but Jeremy and Bob are great hosts, highly knowledgeable, and keep the eps informative and entertaining even when the guest hosts aren’t the best.

I’m going to update my review
My old review was almost so outdated that it would’ve been considered retro (but not in the good way). This podcast, is however. I admit to giving these guys money to their various Patreons, for the over ten years of work distracts distractions, transportation entertainment, and every other excuse to listen to podcasts. I might not always know what game they’re talking about and I certainly don’t always agree with their opinions, but that’s what makes the show so entertaining and compelling. And since I am also a trump bashing elitist I fit right in. Thanks guys.

Nothing but love to be found here
Retronauts quickly rose to the top of the list of podcasts I put on regularly once I took the time to actually sit down and listen to it. It’s fantastic. Hosts Bob Mackey and Jeremy Parish switch off hosting duties, and curate their topics well. They’re both incredibly likable, whether you agree with their opinions or not. As someone who came into the podcast late (2017 or so), I’ve found that digging through the backlog of episodes to be quite enjoyable, and they hold up surprisingly well - better than some of the games/franchises they’ve discussed, even. It’s the perfect podcast for someone who cares about the preservation of video games and how we got to where we are now. Since Bob has been incessantly nagging about leaving reviews, I thought I should finally take the time to do so. If you do like the podcast, consider throwing some money at these wonderful, lovable fools on their Patreon, I’m sure the link is in their show notes for whichever episode you decide to listen to.

LEARN SOMETHING WILL YA
Retronauts is, and has always been, an excellent way to learn lots of interesting things about the games I love as well as the games I've never heard of and the technology and pop culture that surround them. I've heard every episode -- I've been listening from the first episode back on 1up, and the most recent episode I heard was about the Atari 7800, a console I knew next to nothing about. They had a guest on who knew lots about it and educated us all. I'm sure I'll retain almost none of that but it was a great ride anyway. Over the years I've come to feel real investment and attachment to the people on this show and my commutes wouldn't be the same without them. They're also super personable and entertaining on Twitter. Thanks for all your work on this show! I really appreciate it.

Good show, skip Bob Mackey episodes
This is an interesting podcast that generally well done unless Bob is in charge (or sometimes just present). Bob Mackey really drags down an otherwise great podcast.
Jeremy Parrish is incredibly smart and well spoken. Most of the guests are welcome additions. Bob Mackey, however is a pompous and often incorrect burden. He talks over guests, speaks with a boring tone and often just can’t help himself from being snide and snarky for no reason. Jeremy truly deserves better.

Too much negativity
I wanted to find more podcasts talking about game history and the development of my favorite games and found this one a few weeks ago. It started fine enough listening through their Zelda catalogue and kept going through more Nintendo games among others. Quickly i realized there was an annoying pattern in almost all their episodes. Instead of documenting the good and bad aspects of a game fairly and equally they would bash harshly on a beloved game not caring if the audience found it a classic. And this kept going through ALL my favorite games. Even when i listened to an episode thinking “well, i don’t care about this game that much, so it won’t matter that they hate on it” they ended up bashing one of my all time favorites on that episode! It’s so discouraging and unattractive to find an hour long episode talking about a specific game just to find out that the hosts abhor it. Why even let people vote on which games to talk about next if you’re gonna bash on any game you see??? I am done with all the negativity; should have seen it coming from game critics...

Good information, bad host
This podcast has lots of good information on classic video games but is almost unlistenable due to the main host and formatting. The main host has a wealth of knowledge on the topic but constantly talks over his other hosts and guests. Its like he needs everyone to know how great of a video game historian he is and it really brings down the show. Also the podcast has music breaks every 10 mins with ads on top of that. It has gotten to the point that I frequently skip over this podcast in my feed because these problems override my interest in that week's topic.

Retronauts is THE Retrogaming Podcast
Retronauts is THE podcast to follow. As someone who is an avid collector and retro game player, Retronauts dives deep into highly focal subjects into your favorite games from the 70s to the 2000s. Hosted by former prominent gaming journalists, Retronauts feels like the culmination of their passion for the often nebulous nature of this industry. Many subjects you will have never known about. If you love retro games, why aren’t you listening?

Bob Mackey ruins the show
I had to stop listening, recommending, and supporting this show several months ago because of co-host Bob Mackey. The man is full of negativity and hate, and he doesn't contribute anything useful or interesting to the show. Love Retronauts
Easily one of the best gaming podcasts around. And without question the best retro gaming podcast. Jeremy Parish in particular is phenomenal as a host and retro-gaming historian. Between Retronauts and his Youtube channel, there is no one better for retro-gaming content. That said, if there is any weak link in Retronauts, I really wish that Benj Edwards would try to stay on topic and come better prepared for the Retronauts East episodes. Great guy, but it rarely feels like he brings anything of value to the conversation.

Weekly Retro goodness
Retronauts is one of the most comprehesive retro games podcasts, possibly in America, and America is one of the top 10 retro countries, possibly in the world. Jeremy Parish and Bob Mackey are both elegant hosts, each bringing unique perspectives to the videogame podcasting table. The guests are great and the topics are engaging & interesting. With the expansion into full time podcasting, I've super enjoyed Retronauts East. The East crew quickly found their footing, and have been entertaining and informing all at the same time. It's worth the extra dollars to access the feed a week early and sans ads. The research is on point and everybody operates on a solid level of knowlege of what they're covering, especially on Nintendo topics, while Retronauts East helps fill in the non-Nintendo gaps. The conversations are lively on either side of the (America) country. I would appriciate a stronger focus on less well treaded topics; tho given the recent forays into British microcomputers and SNK games, these things will happen with time, planning, and special guests. Of note, I very much loved the Tetsuya Mizuguchi interview earlier this year. Blew my mind hearing things about one of my favorite games direct from the mouth of its creator. Overall, Retronauts is a wonderful podcast, assuming you can stomach an episode of being told how awful Super Mario Sunshine is. It's not really that awful and also it has Yoshi.

A decent podcast
As the title suggests, I think this is a decent podcast. It’s fun to listen to and the hosts are (for the most part) knowledgeable on the topics they discuss. Retronauts is the podcast to listen to for anyone who's interested in older video games. Jeremy, Bob, and a wide variety of knowledgable guests (Chris Kohler, Kat Bailey, former host Ray Barnholt, etc.) have been educating, enlightening, and entertaining older game aficionados for over a decade. Listen to learn more about a childhood favorite or to discover something you may have missed the first time around. Of special note is Jeremy's monthly Retronauts Radio podcasts, which focus on newly released retro game music--listening at 1x speed is a must. On occasions Retronauts does seem to court controversy on social media for the wrong reasons and by no fault of their own; not, say, for a hot take on The Adventure of Link but because the hosts are adults with political opinions that occasionally crop up in conversation. If you're sensitive to that and easily offended, you should probably look elsewhere.

Going downhill
I've been listening since the very first iteration on 1Up? (I think? It was years ago) It's recently gone downhill lately and I've unsubscribed. First it's now full of ads. I've never heard so many ads on any other podcast. We're talking like 5-6 in a row. I don't know if they're trying to drive away non-Patreon listeners but if they are it's working. It's as bad as radio or TV now. Second, I like Jeremy but Bob seems to want to throw in political jabs and rants which are completely out of place in a podcast about old video games. It gets annoying. Also I think doing it every week they're running out of interesting content but they sure push hard for you to send them money.

Great and Well Researched
Retronauts is a long running podcast focused on games from at least a decade prior. The focus on telling the story of older games allows each episode to be researched and told from a historical view, giving insight into what led to the release of the topics and how each topic shaped gaming going forward. Each episode tells the persona experiences of the hosts with the topic, and brings back memories of gaming past for those who lived through it and shares the experiences of the era with those who did not. This podcast is essential listening.

Have been a listener of Retronauts for a long time. I've been gaming my entire life and truly enjoy listening to the Retronauts crew speak in-depth on games and the industry I love. The podcast has come a long way and is well structured and mature, rarely do people speak over each other (I can't stand that or constant interruptions). If you're interested in hearing the good, bad and even ugly history of gaming, check it out. :)

Pod of trolls and abusers
Toxic group of people. Whole shtick is to start fights with and harass bigger media figures. Claim to be liberals but engage in worst of Alt-right trolling/abuse. Skip if being terrible to others on the internet isn't appealing to you.

Retronauts, eleven years later, still amazing
It's kind of funny to think now long Retronauts has been "on the air" and yet have changed very little (for better or worse). It is still very informative, yet still entertaining, and is pretty much the only gaming-releated podcast I can listen to around my kids. That being said, they have begun this gig "full time," and I think for the better. Jeremy Parish (the main host), sounds invigorated for the first time in years at this change, and his episodes of "Retronauts Radio" (highlighting music), is among the best. Keep it up, guys.

Great podcast but will not contribute again
I used to love Retronauts until I contributed to their original Kickstarter and got a bit stiffed on the delivery of the rewards. These are hardworking folks, but kind of need to get their acts together when it comes to delivering to people who contribute their own hard earned dollars.

Every episode is a gem
Bob, Jeremy, and crew always put together a very informative and thorough podcast on whatever they choose to cover. Even for some of the franchises I know well, I always come away having learned something new. It really speaks to the amount of homework they do for each show and the quality of the guests they invite on.

Great retro podcast
One of his best retro podcasts out there for many years running. Jeremy, Bob and the rest are great at exploring retro topics big and small. Ignore all the petulant white male gamergate 1 star reviews from people angry about being told how awful they are.

Best of its class
Quick review: Retronauts is a long running podcast about retro games. The definition of "retro" is arbitrary as long as something has been around long enough to be worthy talking about retroactively. Ever since moving to Patreon the show has branched out beyond its comfort zones and in areas where regular hosts are weak they bring aboard knowledgable guests. Quick paced, insightful, and funny A+ Newcomers definitely listen to the Wonder Boy/Adventure Island episode. It's a topic rarely covered even by other retro game related shows.

Tried to start listening again same issues
Sorry, used to love the show, but I like to lessen to people who are excited about games. They just seem unhappy with everything. I mean that's cool, not all podcast can be the same. There is a reason the AVGN has so many followers. But to me it has went from a positive show to a negative one, this is the second time I tried to start listening to their show again hoping to hear something different. But hey they turned me on to Watch Out For Fireballs, so I can always thank them for that.

Insightful and in-depth
This podcast is one of the greats out there. It's insightful, especially from an insider perspective, in-depth and thorough, with historical context and critical reception thrown in for good measure and finally, funny at times, with anecdotes and perspective opinions used to give the show a human side. This is easily one of the best podcasts in my rotation, and I listen to any new episode when I get the first opportunity to.

A new look at old games
It's exactly what it says, a thoughtful look back at the games we love with info about their development, how they were received when they came out, and if they still hold up. If you were a gamer in the 80s, 90s, or 00s or just interested in learning about gaming' past you will love this podcast.

The best games show... IN THE WORLD
Pretty much the only games podcast I listen to anymore. Bob, Jeremy, and their many contributors let you dive back into classic and not so classic games. Their enthusiasm for the topic shows through and even though they don't necessarily *like* all the games they talk about (sonic), I look foward to hearing more about them. Episodes on soundtracks and music are a special treat. They have an entire episode on Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy music for crying out loud. Another one just on FM Synth. Who else does this? Don't pass over the Micro episodes either. The best of them will shine a light on obscure and interesting games and aspects of games. Special shout out to Ray Barnholt. Who's just the best. Turn down Chris' mic

Shell of its former self
I was a huge fan of the original 1up run of retronauts. The topics were diverse and the cast was always interesting. This current iteration changes those two things. One, the co-host, Bob Mackey is simply a poor choice to speak on a show of this nature. I don't factor his politics and personality into this like others do, what bugs me is his seeming lack of knowledge or interest in anything not named final fantasy or Nintendo. Often times it sounds like he doesn't play the games, and brings little to the table compared to Jeremy. I would recommend retro game fans check out the superb Back in My Play, hosted by Kevin Larrabee. Kevin's positivity and enthusiasm is infectious, and the diversity in his topics is top notch. I hope Jeremy can tweak the show and take retronauts down some new and exciting paths. For the meantime though, I would avoid.

"Woe be you" if you don't listen
This is probably one of my favorite podcasts. I'm all for that old school feel of blowing off your NES carts to get 'em to work. This is one of the best shows to recapture that nostalgia, but with an eye for how these games fit in our current gamer landscape. Particularly of note is how the hosts clearly have their own opinions and bring them to light when they talk about the video games of yesteryear. It's not a podcasts for people who can't handle opinions. Especially not small minded individuals threatened by different opinions. To wrap up, this is a good podcast, but it's not for Mark93292. Sorry bud.

Everything You'd Want In a Retro Games Pod
I only caught on to Retronauts in early 2016, but I've been making up for lost time ever since. The fact that the main hosts, Jeremy and Bob, are so knowledgeable and full of cool industry anecdotes makes it an easy listen. It doesn't hurt that the rotating guests are always game and usually have some unique insight to offer. Henry Gilbert is a personal favorite. It's fun, it's engaging, and--best of all--it's got just the right comedic touch. A welcome respite from a lot of video game review shows out there that mistake giddy decibels or tiresome ranting for humor. Subscribe with confidence.

Pretty good. Pretty dang good.
I've been listening to Retronauts since it was a 1up podcast, and my affection for it has only grown stronger with time. The hosts are all great, but that Bob Mackey in particular is a class act. Jeremy Parish has multiple lifetimes of retro game knowledge. It'd be cool if they had women on more often, difficulties of scheduling outside the familiar group aside.

Amazing & Full of Great Info
I have listened to Retronauts since it's inception. I am always happy to hear from the regular hosts, as it feels like a conversation me & my friends would have about retro games. Jeremy is a master class game journalist & knows nearly every designer of that one NES game you love. Bob's humor & snark is always hilarious. I also love his knowledge of SNES & 64, as it always shines light on gems I have looked over or let's me appreciate a different view point. Every holiday Bob treats us to trashing a holiday themed cartoon. It's the best. Phil rounds everything out with amazing date & fact recall & keeping the show flowing. This is my favorite show because it's just dudes my age talking about stuff I wish I could talk about all day. Old school video games. Your school boy love for some LJN licensed game may get trashed but you will learn more about it in the end. There's a lot of games I've explored by their recommendation & new ideas I see because of their insight. For that I thank them for this awesome show.

Has become defensive and overly-political. Listen to the originals instead.
Though it was once a quality show, Retronauts has become a place for ex-Game Journalists to defend their industry friends and play out personal vendettas. Bob's radio host cheerfulness is okay and leads well, but personal biases make the act quickly grow tiring (the recurring hate episodes for the Sonic franchise is particularly exhausting.) Jeremy Parish, however, has a preachy style that makes nearly everything he's in unlistenable- and woe be you if Henry Gilbert shows up, because every episode becomes about sexuality. When dealing with topics such as censorship and pricing, there's a propensity of the team to side with corporate descisions and talk down to consumers. This is not a coincidence; many of the people on the podcast either currently or have previously worked for the gaming press or gaming companies. I don't know what happened to the crew, but there's a bitterness and snobbishness that simply wasn't present in the early episodes. Don't put yourself through this- you can find all the information presented in these podcasts with a simple Google search.

Where discussing old games never gets old
The Retronauts team is a bunch of current and former games press that focus on old video games (basically anything older than 10 years old fits that definition) and bring up topics on old classics, companies, and trends from mostly the 8-16-32-bit eras. They also delve into some more obscure territory (for the record, I love the Prog Rock episode) and make it fun to listen and learn about games I've never heard of or played. Also, since this is about old games, you never have to worry about keeping up and can dive into their back catalog of episodes too. I always look forward to Mondays because of these guys.

Artful, Engaging Journalism
I have a complicated relationship with video games. I've played them since I was a kid (I'm in my mid-30s) but always more or less alone; friends of mine weren't interested and every time I'd go online in search of like-minded hobbyists I'd instead find the embarrassing rants of angry misogynists. Retronauts appeals to me because it reminds me how useful and how informative the Internet can sometimes be: a way to dig deep into the stories of people no one talks about (who, of course, are often the people most deserving of recognition) in service of a better understanding of how art works. I admire both Jeremy and Bob tremendously. It's easy to imagine Jeremy as a correspondent for The New Yorker but the freedom he seems to have created for himself to pursue his own particular interests results in a weirder, better model for great journalism. I think of professionalism as a kind of lost dedication to craft, one that is almost always best embodied at the margins. Great artists often hold day jobs; bills and family commitments are not abstract aspects of their lives but the heart of them. It would be easy to say that Bob's gift is levity--that humor is important to how we listen and how we learn. The show is indeed funny and Jeremy and Bob work well together. Bob's approach is less technical than Jeremy's but no less critical. I respect Bob's dislike for the small-mindedness of the midwest city he grew up in in part because he builds tremendous empathy from that experience. Great art is always political, too, and Bob sees that. I suppose Bob's gaming tastes are more in line with my own, although I will always be grateful to Jeremy for introducing me to the Etrian Odyssey series through his writing. I've listened to Retronauts for five years and it remains the only podcast in my weekly rotation. The show regularly inspires and educates me and I feel lucky to have found it.

good stuff
Hey these guys are pretty interesting if you want to learn about the history of video games. They go in depth on many subjects concering multiple series. Some episodes are different, the ones on a single game really dive in and focus on how that game was made and influenced other games. The ones on series or publishers are more broad but just as informative and gives a wide knowledge of a topic. I like the difference in episode style and enjoy learning about many of these games I love but also some I dont know of or might never play. Its part of history! Fun stuff. Bob, Jeremy and Ray are really knowledgable and their guests are (usually) great and not annoying. FUN STUFF I SAID! wy are you not listening yet?

Quite possibly my favorite podcast!
Retronauts is a completely fantastic discussion of gaming history. It's upbeat, insightful, often humorous, and hosts Jeremy Parish, Bob Mackey, and Ray Barnholdt do a great job of covering interesting topics ranging from the Atari, Colecovision, and the NES eras (and occasionally long before) to the Playstation 2/Xbox eras. Discussions include the consoles, composers, developers, in-depth dissections of long-running series, you name it. It's as academic as it is entertaining and as varied as the wonderful world of gaming that it covers. Regular episodes can be upwards of an hour, and special micro episodes cover topics that are interesting, but not long enough for a full-length in-depth discussion. One week you could be learning about the launch of the NES, another week you could be treated to a shop channel mix tape. Great guests include notable game journalists, developers, and gaming historians including folks like Ron Gilbert (of LucasArts and DoubleFine fame), Wired's Chris Koehler, IGN's Jose Otero and Jared Petty, former Nintendo indie hero Dan Adelman, Mikel Reparaz of Vidjagame Apocalypse, Frank Cifaldi of Lost Levels, Henry Gilbert of Lasertime, and Clyde Mandelin (aka Tomato) of Legends of Localization fame. I never knew how much I loved to learn about the history of a medium I love so much. There are so many wonderful experiences I missed out on first-hand back in the day. Retronauts is a fantastic podcast pulls back the curtain on a fascinating history.

In terms of Retro podcasts it's really good
A lot of their podcasts I find interesting and the conversations compelling. I feel like I am learning something new everytime I listen. I got to knock a couple stars down though for the lack of variety. So a lot of time they will try to get a well rounded group of people who are generally knowledgeable about different games. Occassionally though, they will bring up a game and nobody has anything to say. Which is a crime because a lot of the time, the game is very good and they just don't have anyone who knows enough to appreciate why that particular game is good. So for example, the Ivalice episode is fairly interesting, but they rip on Tactics A2 pretty hard. So they just skip over it, but as a listener, and fan of Final Fantasy, I am genuinely curious about the gameplay mechanics and why thought specifically it just wasn't as interesting. I can't fault them for not liking a game, but I can fault them for being poor communicators of why they do not like a particular game. There are several beats that sound pretentious. They pride themselves over their knowledge of obscure games and they are not subtle about it. Cool, but hard to listen to that stuff if I, a listener who probably grew up around the same time, was playing games around the same time, have no idea what you are talking about. I mean I know they are limited by time and what not. Other times, the podcasts themselves are just not that interesting. The latest episode, about older game memorabilia that people collect at trade shows and events, is probably the least interesting topic for me as a person who never went to those events, and just likes games. As much fun as an early hard to find demo disk might be for you to talk about, I could simply care less. But that's my opinion and it may not be shared by the global itunes community so read more reviews to get a more complete take or better yet just try a few episodes.

This review is a decade overdue...
Even though I’ve never used iTunes, I just installed it and created an Apple ID for the purpose of writing this review. Podcasts are great, and there are some truly amazing ones out there, but over the past decade Retronauts has become much more than just a podcast to me… It feels more like a family. Bob is the nicest guy in the world, and I appreciate how he always tries to see the good in things. That isn’t to say that he likes or agrees with everything all the time, but he has greatly influenced me to keep an open mind about things. He’s a research junkie, and I always appreciate his efforts to bring accurate and abundant information to Retronauts listeners. I used to think that Jeremy was just grumpy, but as I get older I realize more and more that his cynicism comes from decades of being in the games industry and having seen pretty much everything, the good and the bad. Jeremy has very discerning taste in games, and his recommendations have never been wrong. I love his writing on USGamer, and I consider him a personal role model. The rest of the gang (Ray, Henry, Chris, Christian, Kat, and everyone else I seem to be forgetting) bring so much humor, “color commentary” and personal insight to each episode that it really is a joy to listen to. I enjoy the ocassional heated debate or disagreement, and I appreciate the diverse points of view from each contributor. I think it’s ironic that I have nearly as much nostalgia for Retronauts as I do for retro games in general, but I identify so much with the podcast and it’s contributors that it really has become an important part of my life and something I look forward to each week. Sure.., I don’t know these guys personally, but it certainly feels that way. I’ve been through three major moves and several different jobs and commutes, but Retronauts has always been there. Retronauts feels like childhood friends. Retronauts feels like home.

A couple of issues
I like this podcast, the hosts have a good chemistry with a solid sense of humor but I have a few issues. FIrst, they could add a host from a different gaming era to add a little more flavor, perhaps a female perspective. Second, I know this is petty and minor but hey its my review. I listen to this podcast with my earbuds in. At the beginning of every episode, it sounds like someone is smacking food in my ear because of their little running commentary on interesting food they find and eat at the beginning of the episode. . I hate that. Its an AUDIO format. how bout you either edit out the smacking sounds or you eat off mic. sorry to concentrate more on the bad than the good, but that is the nature of things......seriously, cut out the eating on mic

I know this is a well-loved podcast, so I don’t want to waste time repeating what other’s have said. But this is a great podcast. The love and care that Jeremy, Bob and guests put into all the things they do is evident and appreciated. Keep up the great work. My only complaint is that I wish Bob could have free reign for at least one episode to do a Dark Souls/Original Zelda comparison. I understand why people roll their eyes at the mention of Dark Souls, but those are my two favorite games of all-time, and for good reason. They deserve to be compared because the comparisons are actually startling when you dig deep. How did these two games, from completely different eras, tap into something so similar. It is quite phenomenal, and I really think Bob would do a great job articulating that, and be the Hero of Time we all know him to be. Sorry for the Souls rant. I truly look forward to every new episode. Please, people of the world, subscribe to Retronauts and support them on Patreon as well. Thank you guys for making my commute bearable.

Not just informative and entertaining, but also very personal
The hosts compress the history of videogames into digestible 1-2 hour chunks of audio, and they do it in a way that frequently also a very fun listen. By sharing their own experiences as life-long gamers and as contemporary games journalists, each episode is endowed with a personal touch that no other show on this topic manages to capture. Their blog posts, streams, and meetups complement the podcast well. Overall, Retronauts and its hosts amount to my favorite podcast and media personalities, respectively. My regimen of ambient entertainment is now comprised of Jeremy Parish's chrongaming series on YouTube, Bob Mackey's other retro podcast "Talking Simpsons," and Ray Barnholt's comedy podcast "No More Whoppers." Thanks a lot guys, please keep giving it your all!

Great Discussion
I was first pulled in by the awesome logo of the astronaut, but I stayed for the discussion of the group. I've already downloaded a lot of episodes to listen to. Insightful discussion with great chemistry. Where can I get a cool T-Shirt of that logo though?

Awesome Podcast
Just got into this a few days ago when I was looking up podcasts that have talked about Castlevania and I immediately started downloading every episode. Everyone on the podcast is interesting and knowledgeable and it's thoroughly entertaining. Highly recomended.

Simply the best retro game podcast
A weekly history lesson about the video game industry, presented by some of the finest game journalists (and guests!) around. I've learned tons about the games I adore (and even more about those I don't) from this show than I have through any other resource on the web. It's not only an invaluable source of gaming history, it's also an extremely pleasant nostalgia-tinged listen, and I hope it receives new episodes for years to come. Thanks for the wonderful work, Jeremy, Bob, Ray, Kat and everyone else!

Fun and in-depth gaming discussions
The hosts of this show are uber-knowledgable about video game history and gaming culture. It’s clear they’ve done their homework and played way more games than I have. The intros are occasionally long-winded and superfluous but the gaming discussions are on-point. The hosts obviously love these games but they are not afraid to discuss their flaws. I’ve learned so much about my favorite games from the Retronauts crew. Here’s hoping they’ll continue on for a long time.

Consistently great podcast
I've followed this podcast for years and it has always been one of the best. Retronauts is a great look back at gamings history. If like me you have grown up with video games there will likely be dozens of episodes that bring out the nostalgia. The hosts are fun and knowledgable, and their authentic passion for the medium shines through. Also it's just a lot of fun to listen to them talk about Coleco.

Totally worth it
This podcast is the reason why I downloaded iTunes again after four years without it. Ray, Jeremy, Bob and their guests are fascinating, funny and do a great job of keeping their discussions moving. Even though I've never played many of the games covered in the podcast, it really doesn't matter: the episodes provide plenty of information and context and it's so interesting to learn about the background and influences of these classic games, as well as the marks they left on the industry and the games we play today. Seriously, if you're at all interested in gaming and learning more about it's history and culture, give this podcast a listen! I also recently discovered their YouTube channel, which has some great videos, although it doesn't seem to be updated as often. Check out the Clock Tower videos.

Bob Mackey ruins this show.
I wrote a review a few days back but iTunes never posted it. I assume it was too long or something, in which case here's the basics: - I love this podcast. Seriously, it is my favorite podcast. - But it's 2 stars because Bob Mackey has recently been insufferable. To elaborate quickly, for example, on the Pokemon episode, Bob was skimming over one of the games, describing a feature and saying "but who cares" and things to that effect, essentially talking over actual fans of the game (like Kat Bailey). Kat got so annoyed that she finally put an end to it by saying "just because you don't care about something doesn't mean they don't matter." But unfortunately, this isn't an anomaly. To Bob, if he doesn't care about something, he's going to be extremely sarcastic about it and belittle the topic to no end. And of course, he'll expect you to agree with him. Ray Barnholt, Jeremy Parish and everyone else on the show is incredible and makes it great. But Bob Mackey brings the whole ship down.

Classic games and intelligent conversation
For a long time, video games have been trying to rise as a medium from frivolous entertainment to serious art form. Some notable successes have been achieved, but also success hasn’t been universal. Something similar can be said for video game podcasts. While many gaming podcasts fall into the ‘bro-gamer’ subculture that seems to permeate the internet, Retronauts rises above the field by mixing intelligent analysis with nostalgia. Nominally hosted by gaming news site USGamer.net , Retronauts covers games from the dawn of the medium up to about ten years ago. Hosted by two veteran game reviewers and bloggers, the cast is in-depth and smarter than it needs to be. It not only provides a dose of heady nostalgia, but historical analysis and design critique as well. The main show updates every two weeks considering topics such as specific games or series, but also topics like a retrospective on the career of Final Fantasy score composer Nobuo Uematsu. These episodes go in-depth with three or four guests, running one to two hours. Alternate weeks update with shorter microsodes that focus in deeper on more obscure, but none the less interesting topics like the groundbreaking but often overlooked survival horror adventure ‘Clock Tower,’ or the music of the SNES port of Sim City. Host Bob Mackey and Jeremy Parish, who is also the talent behind Game Boy World, really know their stuff, and have plenty of anecdotes and inside information that really sheds a light on the game design and development process. As someone who spent much of his childhood with an NES controller in hand, but usually couldn’t afford the latest generation system, I am a dyed-in the-wool retro gamer. This podcast is my jam. If you prefer pixelated nostalgia over the latest shooter, Retronauts might just be the gaming podcast you’re looking for.

A Great, Nostalgic Podcast
I'm slowly making my way through the Retronauts episodes starting from the beginning and I'm enjoying all of the episodes I've listened to thus far! My favorite episodes thus far have been the Wario Land and The Media vs. NintendoMania episodes. Keep up the great work! (Also, is there going to be a Final Fantasy I episode? Because that episode would be my automatic favorite)

Really great podcast about retro games. Although. I found it a bit racist at times. If that bothers you you may want to give it a pass.

- 516: WillowIn 1988, as the Star Wars fields lay fallow, George Lucas gave us a fantasy epic he assured us he'd been dreaming up for years: Willow. This tale of magic and mystery spun the story of a humble hobb—er, Nelwyn—and his incredible journey to deliver a thing to a place in the manner of J.R.R. Tolkien. Needless to say, Willow didn't amount to the next Star Wars, and after a few video game adaptations, the book on Willow seemed forever closed... until very recently! With the recent Disney+ series freshly behind us, there's never been a better time to look at the legacy (if any) Willow left behind. So join Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, and Chris Baker (of Willow Talk) as they dress in their finest Renaissance Faire gear to discuss this blast from Lucas' past that's gotten a new lease on life.0 comments0

- 512: Oddworld, Part 1It's impossible to talk about Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee and its bigger, bulkier sequel Abe's Exoddus without talking about farting. Okay, that's not true, but we do talk about farting in this episode, because we want to, dammit! I, Stuart Gipp, am joined by the prestigious John Linneman of Digital Foundry, and the persuasive RJ Lake of D-Cell Games, in this first discussion of Lorne Lanning's moneyhatted magnum opus, Oddworld! It's too big a subject for just one episode, but here we get into the nitty-gritty of the first two games in the planned quadrilogy, these 2D stealth-action-atmosphere pieces that resonated with almost everybody who played them. Except for the prudes who found the act of passing gas to be either childish or abhorrent. Still! Join us as we try to rescue all the Mudokons from their terrible fate, but end up dropping them down trap doors for a laugh. Hello. Follow me. Straight into those meat saws.
