- Book Review - Chaos by James GleickIn this 21 min book review I talk about the book 'Chaos' by James Gleick. A very entertaining narrative about the discovery of order within disorder as exemplified by a branch of science called complexity theory . This multidisciplinary tale is told of how science unfolds as well as the underlying pattern found in complex systems where non-linear systems unfold dependent on initial conditions. We find that this understanding applies in many branches of science: mathematics, thermodynamics, meteorology, population growth, evolutionary biology to name just a few. And I wondered as I read how this applied to the work I do - psychology and complex brain states of 'order within disorder' (autism would be a good example). - Rebel Health Radio Feb 15 · 14m Book Review - It's all in Your HeadIn this book review I talk about It's all in your Head by Suzanne O'Sullivan which details the rise of psychosomatic illness or 'conversion disorders' as they are sometimes called. Suzanne is a neurologist who works in the NHS in the UK and sees at least 30% of her patients (mostly female) getting this diagnosis. It is often devastating for patients who feel that this means they're not really ill and it's all made up! This couldn't be further from the truth. In this talk I detail the misunderstanding of what subconscious stress can do in the body and why it's important to challenge the common perception that because there is nothing organically wrong that means it's not a real disease. All disease is a mixture of mind and body - and unresolved emotions lie at the core of these conditions. - Anxiety is largely UnconsciousIn this 16 mins presentation I talk about Anxiety states being a failure of unconscious regulation by the pre-frontal cortex (part of your thinking brain). Much of who we are is body-based and it is a bottom up process that creates unconscious threat from past experience. By understanding how these states appear and how to build an internal sense of yourself as safe NOW, these bottom up processes are able to talk to your unconscious emotional/survival brain via the autonomic nervous system. There is hope for healing anxiety, but it is body-based not cognitive. Called 'Alice in Wonderland Syndrome', it is a form of somatic dissociative response that occurs when the nervous system fails to relay the correct proprioceptive (sometimes also called kinaesthetic -w here the body is in space) information back to the brain. It often occurs after trauma to that body part but may also be globalised as in chronic pain. I believe it relates to a memory of threat.
