This One is Political
I thought there wasn’t anything new to say about American politics, but Tanner found something I hadn’t heard before. I wish he was invited into the wider political discourse to share it, but as it is, or until then, I feel privileged to have access to it here.

Practical- to the roots
Stoicism is a thought process brought about in Ancient Rome and Greece. They quote Socrates in this podcast. If you like a bit of cynicism, questioning, going to basics in thought- this podcast is for you.

I hope it gets better
Began by watching the oldest of episodes first and it’s 50% advertisements 25% intro/outro and 25% content and the content is quality but I couldn’t pay to support a podcast with such little content. I will continue listening if only to update my review and provide a fair and accurate depiction based on my understanding because the narrator is great and deserves a fair assessment.

A Practical and Engaging Exploration of Stoicism
I recently gave this show a listen and was really impressed with how Tanner presents complex philosophical concepts in a way that's easy to understand and apply to modern life. His interviews with guests are also really interesting and offer a lot of valuable insights. Overall, I'd definitely recommend giving Practical Stoicism a listen if you're interested in learning more about stoicism and how to apply it to your life. It's a great show for both those who are already familiar with the philosophy and those who are just starting to learn about it. So if you're looking for some practical wisdom, definitely give this show a try!

I really enjoy listening to Practical Stoicism. As a classical studies lover, I enjoy how Tanner speaks both on the meditation part of stoicism, as well as the history of the classical world and the “behind the scenes” of the meditation. I like to listen to the show while I am walking or getting ready in the morning. A great show for anyone who needs something calm and interesting to listen to!

Cracked me up...in a good way
I just listened to Bookless, Breadless, and Threadless and I LOVE the term "Bro-icism." It cracked me up because that stuff is everywhere on IG and Twitter. So many are missing the point. Love his last sentence: "Gloating isn't stoic." Very cool.

Simple review
I’ve had a go at Meditations for several years now and I’ve only personally met maybe a handful of people that read it and fewer that have given it serious thought outside an academic setting. I’m not really a podcast guy but I’m drawn to the way Tanner conducts each episode. He delivers the passage, breaks each one down the way he understands it and gives the listener a modern explanation of hit it plugs into our lives, more specifically, how he has plug it into his. These glimpses are what has hooked me. He knows he isn’t perfect nor has “figured it out” as many personalities do nowadays. I really appreciate Tanner and his work and would recommend his efforts to anyone. Thank you Tanner and keep up the amazing work.

Helpful for a Stoicism Newbie
I’ve long understood the basics of Stoicism thanks to my liberal arts college days, but have never really gotten deep into the topic. Tanner does a nice job of covering the topic in small chunks through interpreting the Marcus Aurelius texts. But it’s his conversations with guests that I appreciate for giving the topic greater accessibility for me.

I am an Emergency Physician and I love the principles taught here. I have been practicing stoic for a few years it I have to say healthcare providers need this more than ever. Well crafted and diverse

Inviting stoicism
This philosophy podcast openly invites dialogue and understanding of what is a stoic lifestyle and how does one live one. Tanner is clear that he is not a medical practitioner or a licensed therapist as he shares his opinions and insights on stoicism. I particularly like his distinction and clarification that weaves throughout episodes that stoicism is not apathy. This is a great forum into understanding stoicism and Tanner also invites you to email and connect with him directly in a variety of ways.

Helps with my daily mindset
I’m a woman listener and I appreciate that he asked for a survey of why I listen. I completed the survey but also wanted to express that all humans can benefit from words from the Stoics. Whether you feel you can put into practice the recommendations or not, even gleaning a small amount of ideas from them will help. If you practice some of the philosophies as if they were true, often they may become true and part of your nature later. I found this to be true for me. I’m 60 years old now and I can look back and see how the wise guidance of the stoics has helped me through much tragedy in my life.

Practical Stoicism is a really healthy community. Not only does Tanner provide an easily comprehensible and applicable explanation of Stoicism, he cares a lot about the audience as individuals, which is evident in all of his openings and greetings. He's honest, humble, down-to-earth, and open. The ads aren't as bad as other people may have you believe, and Tanner has put a great effort into coming to a compromise between user enjoyment and his ability to make a living. Here's to living in the moment and taking our first steps as stoic prokoptons!

Great philosophy podcast
I always thought Stoicism was a kind of macho philosophy, but this podcast does a great job of explaining the human aspects and how it relates to vulnerability and dealing with disappointment and failure. I also like the succinct episodes because everything is boiled down to the very heart of the matter. Not a wasted second, which shows that the host puts a lot of thought into the information and doesn’t just hit “record” and start talking.

Thoughtfully Succinct
I am a huge supporter of Tanner; calling into acknowledgment both his keen sense of observation and thoughtful integrity. With judicious temperance, Practical Stoicism serves as a benchmark of stoic wisdom and reason. ADHD!🧡🫂
thank you thank you thank you for being open about your ADHD. i love your podcast in general but in your episode ‘Training Your Attention’ i had to pause when you said you have ADHD. i almost cried because i relate to you. i’ve spent a majority of my life unmedicated and recently got back on medication. now i’m making the decision to go back off medication because you’re right, the side effects aren’t worth it. I just turned 24 on the 12th, I’ve also recently accepted my ADHD and its challenges out loud, I have a workbook on it, podcasts and there’s an app called Inflow that is GREAT for ADHD!!! So you mentioning that at this period of my life helped me remember I’m not alone and I hope you remember that too. It also made this episode hit closer to home knowing you relate. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Perfect episode and perfect personal expression for it. It’s October and it’s ADHD awareness month, you’re not alone!! Love it, thanks. 🧡🧡🧡🧡

Enjoyed today’s episode
Tanner took on a hard topic today and did it well. That is how things like marijuana or alcohol etc. mesh with Stoic principles. Personally I find that things like this or any other addiction that takes away from being present to be counter to my Stoic practice. They can at times control and rob us of the moment or let us escape dealing with something that we really should address in order to live a fuller life. Part of my practice is to pursue and try to manage the triggers in my life that can make me react in way that is not beneficial. I use Stoicism and meditation as a way to seek greater control over myself and my mind. I don’t always succeed but as Tanner notes, there aren’t too many if any sages out there.

Practical yet tedious
I’ve been enjoying the pod for the most part, especially on my commute to work. It’s quick and the meditations are very useful and succinct. My only issue is the advertisements and subscription asks. Today I listen to an 9 minute pod, “Are you still paying attention”, and of the 9 minutes, the first 4 minutes were ads and a drawn out intro (asking for support). Followed by 3:15 of actual reflection (which was great) and finishing with another 1:45 of outro and asking for support. I find it annoying to have to trudge through that much crap just to get to the meditation. I’ll definitely change my review in the future, but as of now, it’s slightly more beneficial than it is tedious.

Emphasis on the “Practical”
As a young person in the 1980s, stoicism meant putting up with great pain and discomfort without complaining. The word had been separated from the philosophy, in much the same way that modernism was a style of design rather than a philosophy. Knowing the roots of things was too time-consuming. One had just enough information to know that the New Yorker cartoon was funny, but not enough to know why. I have been enjoying the pod’s brevity, focus, clarity, and above all, its practicality. I am now primed to read the original texts with a modicum of insight.

Great podcast. I think the episodes should be re-listened to, but it’s difficult when there is so much content about the podcast’s rating, book promotion and gratitude for listening. Would appreciate if that can be kept to 30 seconds or less each episode so re-listening is easier.

Interesting philosophy related podcast
Tanner does a good job of breaking down stoicism and its principles as well as relating them to modern life which is often missing and clearly underserved

Very Well Done
It’s easy to write or speak long, but often difficult to communicate briefly with precision. Tanner’s short episodes give me something to consider throughout the day, and his book is a great companion piece.

Practical and timely
Tanner does a great job of highlighting how these ancient texts remain extremely relevant for the current human condition. I especially enjoy the easily digestible biweekly delivery to let each chapter marinate in my thoughts for a few days at a time.

An excellent podcast on stoicism. Highly recommend. Tanner does an excellent job presenting the various philosophies and ideas of stoicism - very clear and relatable with his own personal insights. I appreciate the brief episodes/meditations that allow plenty of time for personal reflection. Thanks Tanner! Looking forward to more episodes.

Very Helpful for the Stoic “wannabe”
Stoicism presented in bite-sized, relatable chunks. Being new to the stoic texts and digesting them on my own (outside of an academic setting and not with a group of like-minded peers) I find these conversations very helpful with attaining a deeper understanding of the concepts in the texts. In addition, i can use them as small daily “sermons” to remind me of what i am trying to achieve personally with my existence. Thank you for developing this podcast.

Good stuff, episodes are short in duration times, though densely pack with material to ponder endlessly. None the less a benefit contribution.

Seems to be the Stoic discussion I’ve been looking for. Others I’ve tried are academic, intangible lectures. This one is…practical. I am a Stoic work in progress. This helps me stay in the path.

I’ve always admired people who understood philosophy and this podcast seems like a really good way to begin this knowledge journey. They are short enough to where I don’t feel bored, but they are long enough to unravel some meaning. Thank you for this podcast, I am enjoying it very much!

As a newbie to philosophy in general I am loving the simplicity and straight forward way this podcast is presented. The short episodes make them very easy to listen to as well. I love that I don’t have to have a masters degree to understand the points he is making. As someone going through major life changes I appreciate the ease the podcast gives me in an effort to be the best version of myself.

Thoughtful Exploration of Stoicism; Definitely Worth a Listen!
I’m new to Stoicism and reviewing podcasts, but I think there’s so much wisdom in this one that it would be a disservice to others to not share. Each episode so far has been an easily digestible and approachable exploration of Stoic principles as well as how they may be applied to modern life. I’ve listened to each episode multiple times and look forward to more. Thank you, Tanner!

Best podcast on Stoicism
I’ve listened to several podcasts on Stoicism over the years since my introduction to the philosophy around 2015 through another notable podcaster and author (RH). However, the way that this podcast breaks down Stoic concepts and frames them to be able to applied to modern times is beautifully done. I also find the length to be perfect for multiple re-listens and appreciate not being interrupted by ads or sales pitches. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Excellent, Inspiring Podcast
Highly recommend this podcast; relevant content excellently presented. The walk-through of the important points in “Meditations” is well constructed and expertly considered; very useful. Many of the explanations are quote worthy, as much so as the original text. For anyone interested in Stoicism this is an inspiring learning resource. Very much benefiting from the journey. A timely podcast!
I’m 26 and I am beginning to understand just how fleeting all of this is. Thank you for providing an outlet for that reminder. Great job! I’d like for you to appreciate yourself because in this moment you helped a stranger continue to try to get through a challenging time. As random feedback: podcasts like the daily stoic are the most popular but it’s inundated by business approaches and lost a bit of its practicality. I appreciate your approach to this. It feels more like a friend giving you a worthwhile reminder. I like it being organized by passages from meditations. I found the podcast simply by typing in stoicism on Apple.

Very understandable. EZ to connect with
There are a lot of stoic podcasts available they can be very informative. However many of them seem to editorialize from their interpretation. This series takes a meditation, and a very understandable way, explains the concept without letting personal bias seep in. I find this to be the best of the bunch.

Not pretentious at all I love it
I love this podcast so much. I love stoicism but I’m my opinion some of the other podcast can have an essence of pretentiousness. Which creates a little spark of resistance in me. But this one flows right though me and really is practical. I feel like I can effortlessly implement the suggestions in my day to day life. Love starting my day with this podcast. Can’t wait for more episodes!!

Easy-to-follow stoic principles
Tanner makes learning about stoicism approachable and easy to understand. There have been other shows on stoicism that I've listened to, but many left me feeling as though the host was talking over me or trying to prove the level of his education. Tanner discusses the tenets of the stoics without coming off as presumptuous or self-righteous. Plus his episodes are easy to digest and put into practice.
