The Guests Are Very Chatty and Opinionated
This is a great round table music show, discussing current topics about musical artists, genres, and current events. The guests featured are relaxed and casual, while still having valid and unique viewpoints. The host definitely possesses a somewhat dominating demeanor (interjecting personal jokes that are hard to understand), and the opinions occasionally seem deliberately obscure and out-theee. other than that, Popcast is an up-to-date music show that is interesting and educational.

Fun, Pretentious, Musical
I’ve enjoyed listening to a few of these in no particular order. Whether I agree or disagree w the critics opinions, I find their passion for debating and critiquing music to be energizing. Lots of great guest critics sprinkled in to various episodes and there is always at least one interesting takeaway from an episodes analysis.

Listening to these cornballs talk about Zack and Rage debating if they are vaccinated and what Zack has done with his money. Oh, but the shows are good. Ben trying to rip Zack is comical. Ben, trust me, Zack is living better than you.

The same album?
After listening to your criticism about Mr. Morale and Kendrick, I wondered if we were listening to the same album. I think looking for more of the same from Kendrick is where you err. Mr. Morale is complex, and I feel Kendrick continues to evolve. More of the same would be boring. I’m glad I didn’t listen to your podcast before I decided to buy concert tickets and thoroughly enjoy his amazing performance! LCutler1

Host is insufferable
I expect a certain level of pretension in music critics; I used to work with them all the time and most thought it was about them rather than about the music. But Caramanica is Arcade Fire level pretension and is insufferable. I love the topics but just can’t listen any further.

Good topics bad host
Arrogant, uninformed, and smug, I agree that Caramanaca disrespects listeners, co-hosts, and musicians. His misses the point completely most of the time, mansplaining things to cohosts and listeners that he doesn’t understand. Hard to enjoy. Some of the guests are great; when there are more than one at once they can usually help steer as well as slightly push back, but rarely enough, leaving me feeling gaslit and unsatisfied.

I love my NYTimes podcasts, tried this one again and I just could not get through anymore. I agree with comments about the male host. The production is good though. The most recent podcast, as of today, was without the regular host and instead, two female hosts (great!) But, good god, the gentleman guest should have been reminded to refrain from saying “like” as a place filler, and “ya know, like” constantly. Follow the female hosts’ lead! Slow down. Stop and think about what is being said or just let there be a break in words. I was fluent in “valley girl” growing up in 80s SFV and I knew /know when to tone it down. Thankfully there was no vocal fry and inappropriate “upward inflection” at the end of statements. I didn’t expect a guest host fail from a NYTimes podcast.

Gatekeepers
I’ve followed this show several times, and have unfollowed again each time. The hosts just can’t restrain themselves from being gatekeepers for pop music — the insufferable insiders for whom good music is too good for the masses. The height of their pomposity is revealed when they discuss Latin pop or rock: at the same time they misstate song titles and lyrics in Spanish, and joke about rolling their r’s, they pretend that their familiarity with obscure artists and producers elevates their tastes above mere fans. Ugh.

The host ruins the show.
The first Popcast episode I listened to was the roundtable discussion on Betty Davis, which I enjoyed. Then I listened to the episode about Big Thief, and unfortunately I found the host for this episode (Jon Caramanica) extremely off-putting. The two guests were great but the host needs to dial it back and stop trying to dominate the conversation. Also, the constant trying-too-hard affectations and AAVE are very cringeworthy.

Rough stuff folks
I like reading Jon so gave a listen...it’s like listening to someone do a parody of a stereotypical, stuck-in-his-ways, defiantly Gen-X music nerd. He’s often speaking and reacting to a very contained circle of music critics, without seemingly any inclusivity or self-awareness.

Hit or miss… usually miss
Half of this podcast is the host talking about how old he is but creepily always on TikTok and other forms of social media. If he and the guests didn’t constantly draw attention to the fact that they are older than most of artists they review, spending half the time trying to prove their points of view are relevant because though they’re old they’re on social media… well, it would likely be more of a discussion of the music, like it purports to be. The other half is the actual discussion of the music. Generally the discussion half is worth listening to but riddled with issues. Though the criticism is often on point, there is a reluctance to just accept something more mainstream as good without qualification. At other points they veer off into reviews of music I’m not sure anyone else is listening to. I don’t have an issue with that per se—after all part of the point of listening is to be exposed to new music—but with all the unnecessary banter about the hosts rather than the music itself, one is left wishing they’d prioritize covering a broader range of actual musical releases that people would like to hear about. Instead of big mainstream releases and whatever random music the hosts and guests feel like promoting from TikTok.

Actually Disappointed
I go through dozens of podcasts weekly and have never given a + or - review but their coverage of the 2nd half of Adele’s album bothered me a lot. It was pushing on racist. What about Adele or 30 makes you think she’s been listening to Drake (mentioned twice lol) or Future? Future?????? “Sing sing hip hop”??????? What is “traditional” music?? because that isn’t a genre. What about Adele being friends with Skepta is weird and why was that followed by the “Adele’s outside!” Aren’t y’all music analysts? Not to mention the endless interrupting by the host.

AAVE + misogyny
here to join the many people who have taken the time to review this podcast and note the clear as day gen x misogyny just oozing from the pores of blaccent perpetrator jon caramanica. his vast music knowledge takes a backseat to his obvious and crippling biases, most clearly displayed recently when he went out of his way to make light of a female popstar using her work to process the fact that she had been groomed by a grown man/predator. humiliating that the times cannot see what a liability this clown is and how perfectly capable the many women he brings on as guests could be at taking the reins. fingers crossed higher ups become aware of this soon because without him, this show could really be something special.

Nearly every NYT podcast is essential listening — The Daily, Still Processing, Rabbit Hole, etc. This is the exception. I gave it a chance. I really did. Why hasn’t the NYT addressed the host?
Just to listen to this podcast for the first time, figured I’d check out the reviews first. Almost every single review has a similar comment on the main host - misogynistic, condescending, obnoxiously bro-ish and not in a funny way. Like, in a really bad way. Sounds like a great premise and was looking forward to starting the new pod, but considering the majority of comments mention how awful listening to this host is, and the fact that the NYT has refused to address these comments, looks like it’s gonna be a no for me dog.

I just....
This really is a smart, interesting, and fun podcast about pop music. My biggest concern is the main host. The way he speaks about women sometimes, his words like bro, dude, man, yo, dawg, are almost triggering and the opposite of what I want to hear when discussing pop music. Joe Rogan has that kind of thing covered. The ablsolute best episode of this series has been when there were 2 female hosts discussing the Katy Perry and Lady Gaga albums. So much more intelligent and cohesive than the rusty current host. Content 5 star Host negative 5 stars

Sexist Host
John has always seemed a little sexist, but the problem becomes glaringly obvious in the recent episode in which a male critic, a female critic, and John all reveal their top 10 lists for 2020. The woman shared her list first, and John interrupted her incessantly, derailing the flow of her ideas so often that I just about lost my mind waiting for her to get through all 11 albums on her list. Then immediately afterwards, the other male critic delivered his list more or less uninterrupted. It’s really obvious that John is a guy who thinks his jokes, hot takes, and braying jackal laugh are more important than anything any woman has to say. Dudes of the world, stop doing this.

Could Jon c be a little less misogynistic?
Look, I love this podcast and it’s very well made. But Jon caramanica has some issues with female artists. Don’t take this as an insult, he’s still a very good writer and podcast host! But the insistence on calling Billie Eilish “Billie eyelash” comes off immature and condescending, and the fact that there’s so few episodes about female artists while Charlie puth and Ed sheeran and evening Justin Bieber are getting tons of positive attention is disappointing. I just think this podcast would be great with some more female guests and more episodes about female artists. Especially when pop music is such a female driven genre. Please just like respect women a little more!!

Kind of bro-ish
This podcast is pretty informative if you’re looking to keep abreast of important issues in the ever changing music world. My only gripe is that it’s lacking in female perspectives. I recall an episode where Jon and his co-hosts were tougher on female pop stars like Katy Perry than they are on male counterparts. Other than that, not a bad gateway podcast for new or old music nerds.

i’m unsure as to why the NY Times insists on having Jon Caramanica as their representative of music criticism. his insistence on being “edgy” is grating, and belies his Peter Pan syndrome. Jon, you’re 45 years old; stop acting you’re like a walking “How do you do, fellow kids?” meme.

Wish I Could Hang
I've been listening for several years, largely as a NYT loyalist, but it's time to step away. The focus is oddly narrow, and returns to the same Taylor, Drake commentfest literally every week. It's cringey and sad when there is so much music being produced right now, good, bad, innovative and rehash- whatever - it all would make for interesting criticism. I wish John P or Karen G had their own shows, because the perspectives are articulate and educated, but mostly I wish that John C would stop trying so hard to be hip, stop the incessant snark, and stop cutting off others. I know his actual age, but I feel like I'm in the radio presence of a 14 year old boy whose trying to make sure everyone knows he's cool, he knows Brooklyn, he's lived in London, he knows more than any girl in the room, and he thinks he is so funny.

The Condescension is Grating
I love listening to critiques on art, on music, on the nuance of newer artists. The insistent Billie “Eyelash” pronunciation — why? What does it add to the conversation? I felt compelled to listen longer, for the clever and fresh outlook by the female critic. But the dude repeatedly and purposefully mispronouncing Eilish — I don’t get it. I was hoping to subscribe to another music podcast, to listen to while I paint. Going to just stick to the respectful speakers of Switched on Pop.

This podcast needs a new host
I’ve been listening to this podcast for a year now and I’ve always found the host to be a hater who talked over his guests to state his own grating opinions, but kept listening because I do like guests such as Karen and Joe. I’m writing this review because of the host’s comments on Billie Eilish. I’m not even a huge Billie fan. But reducing her accomplishments by saying any teenage suburban white girl with a mental illness can become her...I’m in shock the New York Times would allow their critic to say those things about a teenage girl. The reason why Billie was apologizing for sweeping the Grammys is because of men like you who claim she’s only successful because of a schtick.

I really enjoy the conversations that are had and the guests that come are always top notch! Jon is very cynical and judgmental in a way that makes the listener feel alienated, but he kinda makes up for it by the breadth of knowledge he has. One of the best music pods
I love this pod! I’ve been diving into to the whole catalogue and have been consistently entertained and informed. My fav thus far has to be the treatise on Ashlee Simpson (parts 1 & 2). It showed how well-versed and open-minded and critically curious Jon and his amazing guests are. It made me think contextually about music and also realize how many bangers “Autobiography” actually had, lol. It was before its time!!! Jon is awesome and thoroughly passionate and he always brings on some of my favorite music writers and journalists — it’s so cool to hear them aloud. I’ve been listening to this podcast for two and a half years now and have listened to nearly every episode released. Lately the topics over the summer of 2019 haven’t been ‘as’ interesting to me personally, but I love the commentary and back and forth banter with the hosts. I think Jon tries to bring in more experienced cohosts when he isn’t as knowledgeable on things (jazz, Brazilian music, female punk pop). Shockingly one-sided
I’m surprised about how the one-sided opinions of the host (and I’m assuming producers) are blindly accepted as fact or truth without need for consideration. I love The Daily and wanted to see what other podcasts were put out by the NYT. The two podcasts are worlds apart with respect to standards of journalism. The topics are interesting, and I like to hear opinions that differ from my own (ie Air Pods, country rap), but the lack of acknowledgement of counter-opinions is frustrating and not respectable. I subscribe to the NYT to support The Daily. I hope that none of that money goes to this podcast.

Thought provoking
I don’t always agree with the host and guests, but they always leave me thinking about aspects of music culture from a perspective I had not yet considered. Yes, John C. can sound like he’s Trying To Be Cool when he forcefully inserts the latest youth slang into his dialog, but the guy at least has a well-considered take on most issues and provokes his guests into a natural debate. Would love to hear more critics from outside the NYC bubble, especially when discussing aspects of music culture from the south.

Music is culture
While these hosts have clearly gone to school to be able to critique music for the NYT, the main host (Caramanica I believe) lacks any sort of insight on the culture that he soaks up the majority of these hour-long episodes critiquing. On top of that, the episodes I've heard featured exclusively male voices that unsurprisingly spoke of women musicians rarely and more negatively than their male counterparts. There truly isn't much substance to be found in this "popcast" as these critics are so far removed from mainstream youth culture that they can't accurately cover what the mainstream youth are listening to, never mind provide any real insight. It's hard enough to find podcasts about music that don't sound like they were recorded through a soda can, so it's especially disappointing to see the New York Times put its name on something so subpar (and that word choice is generous).

Fawning over anyone with a penis.
They need a permanent woman-identifying cohost. It’s ridiculous. Joe C will bend over backwards to say how amazing someone as bland and boring like Charlie Puth and then feel the need to say, “it’s not for me, but here’s X song” by women artists. It’s really frustrating and especially apparent in the episode about Kelly Clarkson and P!nk.

Pretentious and narrow-minded - don't waste your time
I listened to the Maggie Rogers review and was dumbfounded by how narrowminded and ridiculous you sound. Jon asked, "Pharrell, have you never heard music before?". Are you serious? He has multiple Grammy's and has recorded in various genres. Yes, he's heard music before. He wasn't comparing Maggie with Wu-Tang, as if they are "the same". He was referring to their uniqueness. No one in America is really doing what she's doing. PLUS, she stood out from the other students he had just listened to, providing constructive criticism. Telling them to find their own sound, as they each came off as carbon copies of artists they admire. When he heard Maggie's song, also a student, he was blown away by the lyrics (he complimented her folk background) and the structure of the song, from the beats, to the harmonies, and the break. "Alaska" was exactly what he was trying to convey to the rest of the class, in that it was unique and it was her own thing. Also, it doesn't matter how many times you've listened to the song, it's still a great song. Yet, these clowns want to talk about everything but, like gossipy mean girls. If you enjoy listening to pretentious, narrow-minded podcasters who think they're funny, this one is for you. If you prefer reviews with substance, skip this and find something else.

Assumes You’re a Music Critic
Jesus Christ i’ve been trying with this podcast for a while but the only episodes i like are the ones with Wesley Morris, who is actually a good podcaster because he explains what he’s talking about. Jon Caramanica assumes you have the knowledge of a music critic when it would take like 5 seconds to explain everything he is assuming you know. Once they called Miasma the sound of 2018, and I found myself frantically googling to figure out what that meant, that’s when I knew to Delete from Library forever.

Could be so much better if.....
....the host would recognize that the podcast is NOT about him. So many interesting artists and topics, and lots of fantastic guests, but the host just keeps getting in the way, always making it about himself. Too bad. Sometimes I just have to skip forward because of this, and occasionally I couldn't listen the whole way through. But at least we get to hear some Jon Pareles (who most definitely is there to talk about the music an NOT himself).

Ok but what about arctic monkeys, no mention of them!? They have been the most successful and experimental rock band of the last 10 years. Each album number 1 in the UK, many accolades more recently 2018 mercury prize - sold out concerts all over the globe. Alex turner is the most compelling write and lyricist, his your rock star - he s a method actor he becomes a new character with each new album.

One guy ruins it
I’ve tried a couple of times to listen to this podcast, because the guests have a huge depth of musical knowledge and I’d love to stay up and what is current. But the host of the show is absolutely intolerable. He inserts himself into every guest’s comments, always bringing it back to him and fancying himself a comedian– – who cares?? And he embarrasses himself trying to be hip, throwing out phrases like “that’s fire” and “ cool AF” unsubscribed.

In your most recent popcast on Nicki Minaj and Travis Scott, you mentioned a fellow podcast “penny something” about the music streaming industry. Would you happen to have the full name of that podcast? I love your show! You provide a great cultural insight into a lot of the nuance of the current music scene. Keep up the amazing work!

Only for pop insiders
I am shocked that this is a New York Times production because clearly the audience is only for people deeply interested and invested in the intricacies of the pop world and the internet. I’m 34, so I’m technically a millenial, and I’m very interested in music and culture, though typically more alternative than pop. I have no idea what the people on this podcast are talking about half the time and it makes it almost unlistenable. For example, the latest episode is on stanning and clap back culture. I didn’t know what either of those things were and they were never explained so it took several minutes of confusion and inference to figure it out, meanwhile they have moved on to talking about Stan armies by name without mentioning the celeb they are a fan of until 20 minutes later. Maybe this podcast isn’t aimed at people like me, but it’s frustrating because clearly the hosts have a diverse, thoughtful, and educated view of pop and I would love to hear their opinions if only they’d take the time to start with the basics and go from there.

Discovering a new star
You guys need to hear this girl name Xina Leoná Stella on YouTube. She only posts specific projects. She speaks of humble, world problems, herself, what she has gone through, rape, etc. she brings that vibe that artists lack on bringing she’s coming out with more projects of course it’s just a matter of time search her up on YouTube listen to “I Get Around” & “cold” her poem of one of their altercations in her life. Trust she has what it takes just cause she doesn’t have the money for the best quality doesn’t mean her stuff isn’t poppin!

Long episodes, not easy to follow
This podcast promised to go over modern pop music, but the hosts spend much of their time criticizing in a pretentious way without actually analyzing the music itself. Also, the podcast is censored, making it harder to take seriously. I’m unsubscribing now, and will just listen to Switched on Pop instead.

Interesting topics and guests, but Caramanica is the worst
Jon Caramanica has a nice radio voice, but I find his personality profoundly grating (grating enough that I felt the need to review this podcast). His “sense of humor” is so smirky and self-satisfied and his use of hip-hop vernacular is extremely labored as he desperately tries to prove to his listeners and guests how clever and hip he is. He sometimes has good insights, so I imagine he is a good writer, but listening to Caramanica is annoying on a good day and exhausting on a bad one. The Times’ chief music critic Jon Pareles is great, but he is rarely on the show these days.

On one hand I like a lot of the topics on this podcast. And I like some of the guests. But the host epitomizes everything wrong with the hipper-than-thou critic stereotype. I can’t listen to more than one episode every month because of him.

JT episode
These two guys seem to have really missed a lot in the Timberlake backlash. I think it would’ve been smarter to include a black voice in that convo. It started when he began tweeting condescending things toward black ppl on twitter. That was the start of his downfall, those of us that let him cook in the past we’re done with him after that. It’s also a matter of him using black artists/music are validate his brand but not speaking up for causes that are important to black ppl politically (same category as Iggy). What he got away with in terms of throwing our legends under the bus or speaking ill of them ie. Janet and Prince, folks felt the need to let him know he was cancelled. Certain consciousness is raised especially regarding the sexism that influenced the Janet/Justin Super Bowl backlash he’s just not gonna skate anymore.

It’s ok
Here’s the thing- when Popcast has a good episode, it’s fantastic. The bad news is good episodes are fairly infrequent. My main critique is directed at how indulgent the show is. It revolves around the interests of Mr Caramanica- which is fair since it’s his show, but it’s led to me turning off most episodes after 15 minutes. One could play a drinking game based on mentions of SoundCloud and wind up in the hospital. However, I do still subscribe and I still listen occasionally. This is an alright podcast that could be so much better with a bit more attention to “pop,” to offset all the niche topics.

Seriously?
After giving this podcast 7 or 8 months to win me over, I just can't do it anymore. The hosts go beyond lacking knowledge, and often veer into bad knowledge. The subject matter is narrow on its best days which would lead you to believe they would at least know a lot about the thin slice of music they cover, yet they can't even handle their area of expertise (rappers named Lil and Soundcloud). The only episodes that are worth listening to are ones where other writers from the NYT music staff appear and that's not nearly enough. The episode about whether or not Soundcloud is a business or a community may have been the most ill-informed discussion happening outside of the Oval. That episode's subject had everything you could ask for to have an in-depth and informative conversation. They simply didn't know what they were talking about, and instead created a false narrative that serves no purpose towards understanding what went wrong and what needs to happen in order for SC to be a successful business model AND community. Time for a re-boot.

Wish I like it but...
I honestly really want to like this podcast but I find the host both condesending and quite rude to his other pannel members. He's interrupted every woman that I've heard speak on the show, and while I understand that the NYT thinks of itself as 'high-brow' this feels like a music critics circle-jerk in the most insufferable way.

Fansplaining, with occasionally great episodes
When the Popcast exposes you to new music and the social context of music, it succeeds wonderfully. But the ratio of actual music played to comments made by the hosts in a strenuous effort to sound cool is increasingly lopsided towards the latter. On one of the most recent episodes (“The Return of New York Rap”), there weren’t any samples of the songs the hosts were discussing until 25:53. It’s moments like these where the Brooklynite hipsterism of the program risks leaving behind listeners who may not have a great deal of exposure to an artist or genre. (“Haven’t heard of X artist? Do you even know what bars are, bruh?” as host Jon Caramanica might say, like a parent trying just a little too hard to sound cool.) That’s unfortunate, because this show has the potential to make music more accessible to a broad audience but often doesn’t. More sampling, interviews, and accompanying show notes would help it fulfill that promise.

sighhh…. just no
This feels long. And it’s less than an hour. Yes, what is suppose to be the ideal podcast time feels stretched out by mansplaining mainly hip-hop. NYTimes usually does it right. And most of the titles seemed like things that I would enjoy, but… Unfortunately, the overanalyzes becomes drab and annoying without SOUL. It seems like a very detached observation of rap/hip-hop and sometimes the music industry.

Interrupting Host
Finding this really hard to listen to because Jon Caramanica interrupts his guests almost every sentence; trying to finish their sentences; or is interspersing the guests’ speeches with “mhm” “yup” and “yeah” after every phrase. Which is a shame, because I was really expecting this podcast to be a new favorite of mine. It’s just very hard to listen to overall. The subject matter seems great and I appreciate how varied the genre explorations are. But I actually cannot listen to this without feeling stressed out.

Too much talk, not enough music
I enjoy the NYT capsule reviews and had wanted to hear the music discussed each week. While it's nice to hear some background, there's too much talk--particularly too much opinion--and not enough music. The music clips are few and far between and last about 10 seconds. The discussion, on the other hand, drones on and on...

What happened
This is my second favorite music podcast after Sound Opinions. I like shows that have opinions about music. They play something they do not like and then say why. As opposed to most music shows where they play only stuff they like. if you don't like their taste then your left with no entertainment value. People should realize that music is more a divisive medium and talk about it as such. Many of these music shows seem like they like everything and everybody. That is boring! It would be like watching a reality TV show where everybody gets along. Not that I really like any reality TV. Only analogy I could think of.

Check it out
This podcast features interviews and commentary from the pop and jazz critics of the NY Times, who seem to have a genuine rapport with each other and also a well rounded view of current artists in the context of today's music biz. They don't sound desperately cool or hopefully hip like npr hosts, they just talk about the music, why it's news and where it fits in the culture or marketplace. Sisario is a good host, asks direct questions, is willing to play the music fan as well as an expert. The live sets are greatly missed, and we hope they come back.

Good show but a little pretentious in it's music choices
I enjoy this show. The New York Times has some great writers and that comes through in this show. What I do not care for is their predictability. The show is about some pretentious world music release which is seldom popular in country of origin but popular in the west, romantic singer songwriters and nearly every commercial release gets a mention. I contrast this show with Sound Opinions of Chicago Public Radio and marvel at how they have the balance just right. I discover artists and at the same time have an excellent mix of genres to listen to. I wish the music popcast would take a risk and stop being so coventional and predictable.

I find it a nice companion to the iTunes New Music Tuesday podcast; in fact I usually prefer it to the iNMT podcast. I am also a big fan of the occasional look beyond the numbers for insight into the music business and history of an album or artist.

If you want to discover new artist or albums, this is the perfect "Popcast". Unlike, Itunes New Music Tuesday Podcast, (who limit themselves to make a review of the Home Page of Itunes music store), NYT Popcast, explore deeply in the albums, giving you the oportunity to really taste the music. You're not gonna like every artist or albums review they make, but I assure you gonna have a wonderful journey in pop music world. keep doing the good work, guys!
