Edutainment at its Finest
I’m a neophyte to the field but who’d of known economics could be so appealing? I guess the millions who study it! This podcast has illuminated so many things for me and covered so many fascinating stories all under the umbrella of economics. I’m Sarah Gonzalez and this has been, planet money (tehe).

It’s hard to name a favorite podcast, but this is certainly in my top 5. Deep economic insights, getting into the weeds just enough to tell the story right. Also, where else will you learn about the economics of the comic industry, complete with a musical?!?

Still good, but taken a dip
Years ago, I gave this 5 stars; was one of my top 3. Sadly, NPR management must have listened to an episode and found there were not enough democratic advertisements. So, they went political. Recently, it’s gotten better, but still too biased for me to trust them. Too bad. I miss the old one. The Robocall invasion, the value of an index traded fund, even the Starbury just surprised me in a good way. But the FTX episode was outstanding, so I’ll keep them for now.

Foolish
Within the first ten minutes of their most recent episode their guest suggested that college students and people with low income shouldn’t feel bad about taking on credit card debt because they are effectively borrowing from their future self who will be much richer. This is ludicrous you are realistically borrowing from the credit card company at likely a high 20s percentage point. I’m disappointed that someone would advise young, impressionable college students to go crazy with credit card debt after they are likely already finding themselves embroiled in the student loan crisis.

Great Backlog with Recent Decline
I loved this podcast in the past and would listen to it constantly while working over the years. However, over the course of the pandemic this podcast has become much less impactful with its reporting and topics. Some attribute this to bias and others to the loss of the old host. I’m not sure what caused the magic to fade, but it’s not the same. The addition of subscriptions at this points feels more awkward considering the decline. I hope this podcast finds its mojo again. I really enjoyed learning economic concepts, economic history and current day economic events.

The economy, simplified
Planet Money does an amazing job presenting you with small, interesting stories from around the world about parts of the economy you never knew existed. It’ll bring you stories about apples, handbell rivalries and break down the global price of oil, and make sure even those who don’t know much about economics can understand it. I think it’s quite telling that most of the negative reviews here are from people who have issues with NPR’s leftest views, the limited amount of context they can fit in a thirty minute podcast, and the fact that they are running out of stories to tell. It’s an amazing show, period, end of story.

No more Sarah
Sorry to be negative, but the idiotic questions and simplistic views of Sarah make me cringe. It’s as if the target audience is in first grade. Not every reporter is going to have a good Q score, but come on. At least attempt to be unbiased. Listened to over a 1,000 episodes. Now I just skip past if Sarah is doing the interviews. Am I alone?

Too much non-sense
I’ve only listened to a hand full of episodes and I think they offered interesting information. But if an episode is 20 minutes, 10 minutes of it is filled with complete non-sense that is completely irrelevant to the story. If they can cut that down the non-sense by 50%, they would have a much better show.

Sadly not what it once was…..
Once this podcast was an excellent and engaging journey through the concepts of economics and how they relate to current topics. It’s original host have moved on and unfortunately their replacements care only about furthering their political beliefs. I’m not a conservative but the left lean of all episodes is enough to make even me gag. Doesn’t anyone practice unbiased journalism these days….

Such a shame this has gone downhill
Everyone knows NPR is a left wing mouthpiece without much value to real discussion but this show was the holdout until recently. It is still enjoyable at times but getting worse. The deregulation of the 80s was good yet there is a whole episode bashing it. Weird.

Left-Wing Shill
What used to be a fun and engaging show is now just a bunch of one-sided, left-wing tripe. This is especially true in the episode regarding the Texas power grid. A balanced approach would have asked if so-called green technology was fulfilling the demand necessary for Texans. A balanced approach would have asked if the shuddered call plant produced more energy than the hundreds of wind turbines on the horizon. A balanced approach would’ve asked if those turbines actually produced energy during the winter storm of 2021. A balanced approach would have asked if east and west coast knuckleheads who now live in Texas, were responsible for this green energy mess. You can still be a skinny jean wearing, soy milk latte sipping leftist while still retaining some semblance of journalistic integrity, much less intellectual honesty.

Really downhill over the last 4 years
Once in a while they have interesting stories but most episodes are heavy with the social justice. They only present the social justice viewpoints and never the one shared by the vast majority of the country. Way too left for me and I consider myself left leaning. Stop being so biased

Teach your listeners HOW to think. Not WHAT to think.
I liked that a key takeaway is that Oil is a global commodity— no US oil company can set prices. One issue I have was diversity of thought — having a viewpoint represented from someone actually working in the oil and gas industry. This perspective could be along side the academics and gas station owner. Look up Mark Lacour at the OGGN podcast. This was a complete miss on behalf of the producers. Also the end was sadly predictable with the worn out narrative of “greedy oil companies”. (but by the way one of them funds NPR). Producers failed to acknowledge that oil companies are just like the gas station owner in that they would prefer lower stable prices because it’s much easier to plan projects around them. It’s a lot of work to ramp up and down (the example used was stacking rigs) and if prices could be predicted it would make life a lot easier. But as we learn at the start — the US doesn’t have much of a sway in the global market since we produce a very small amount comparatively. Please include all perspectives NPR and keep the focus on economics. Teach your listeners HOW to think. Not WHAT to think.

A great show that holds a mirror up to our world
I’ve been listening for years and this is a fantastic podcast. Each episode is interesting, engaging, and inviting. Regardless of the topic, the Planet Money’s storytelling skills are on a whole another level. But anyone who’s listened to Planet Money knows that :) What compelled me to write this review were the recent reviews accusing this podcast of being far-left or too focused on issues like racism. My short answer to would be listeners is to ignore those comments and listen to this podcast with an open mind. My slightly longer answer is that these listeners are uncomfortable with the role systemic oppression plays in the lives of minorities, women, POC’s, and other marginalized groups. Planet Money does a fantastic job of leading with facts and helps tell a fair and cohesive side of the story from the perspective of individuals who historically don’t have as loud of a voice. It also shares a balanced viewpoint and even shares how conservatives or corporations view things, including when it’s in opposition to these groups. It also doesn’t resort to finger pointing or paints issues in a binary manner (e.g. good vs evil) and effectively unpacked the shades of grey that exist in the economy. Overall, it’s fair framing and shines a spotlight on the structural issues that causes challenges for these groups. For anyone who this review doesn’t resonate with, look in the mirror, and see why hearing the viewpoints of individuals who don’t look like you make you feel so bothered and uncomfortable. These are the people who face the brunt of sexism, racism, classism, and more everyday, and not talking about it doesn’t make these issues go away. I hope this introspection can help you expand your viewpoint, help you grow, and broaden your horizons. Keep up all of the great work Planet Money team, looking forward to listening to many more amazing episodes!

This is a far left political show.
Years ago this show was incredible, and every episode was captivating. Now it is nothing more than a platform to spout far left ideologies, a woke political podcast masquerading as an “economics” show. Fe: in the “tale of 2 cities” they made it about how white people want to keep black people put of their cities. When they asked Trey about his motivations, he responded that it had nothing to do with race, and they were fine with that. But when the sandy springs founder said it had nothing to do with race, they called him a liar.

Race
I listen to planet Money to hear about money, half way through the shows, I am exclaiming "what does this have to do with money?!" Tale of 2 cities, wow, clever how you managed to wove race into it. That was awful, I live in an area where towns work to break away froma county that irgnors needs when tax dollars go to the city. No one is sitting back, trying to exclude races. You make it seem like all white people hate, so not true.

Long time listener
I’ve been listening to this show before there was podcasting and I’m thrilled that it’s in podcast form. The show always has a excellent narration and good information that is always palatable. It doesn’t take an economics or financial degree to get the gist of the issue. The criticism that it’s bias, I suspect, comes from people that already have their world view determined and are not open to any other viewpoint.

Student loans
I am so sick of hearing about non payment of student loans by entitled people who used poor judgement. I paid off my loans, and my 2 daughters have been diligently been paying off their loans. They both made choices about which college to attend based on affordability, future loan payments, and income possibilities based on their degrees. If you want to pursue the arts, public service, or something else which may not have massive income potential, then don’t take out 100k in loans, and don’t buy a house or new car instead of paying your loan. Pick a school you can afford. If all loans are forgiven, do the students who have sacrificed and paid them back get a refund?

Tends to be hit or miss
I listened to the podcast for several years and know not every topic will be of interest to me; however, lately (Fall 2021) I have found the topics that I would be interested in are often presented in an uninformative, cute, or juvenile way that ends up feeling like at best a waste of my time or at worst an insult to me as a listener. Maybe I will try the podcast again in a few months, but I doubt I will miss it in my feed.

summer school crypto ep is disappointing
The crypto / bitcoin summer school episode is maybe one of the least informative crypto pieces I’ve heard. It’s like, ok here’s a frightening tale about losing it, now let’s talk about the risk involved. Then you proclaim, “Now you know about bitcoin.” Uhh, no. No real objective information passed on here. First, the risk involved isn’t much different than that of say day traders, or other market speculation on new tech or companies, which can also be very volatile - take WeWork for example, or the housing market. People who can’t afford that level of risk would be best sticking to index funds; nothing wrong with that. But instead, demonizing crypto to your audience while not mentioning much about its history, usage, or why many ppl are interested in decentralized systems to begin with, is lazy reporting. What I expected to hear from you, something properly educational, came across as disappointing anecdotal campfire scary stories. My two cents for what it’s worth. Or I guess in this case, my 4.7e-7 btc.

All racism all gender all the time.
This podcast used to be great. Now it’s all victim hood all the time. Women and minorities don’t have a chance, per this theology, in our world. Yet men and Asians are legally discriminated against. No tears for them, just this theological indoctrination. Paid for by the American tax payers. Only half of adults pay taxes, and those Americans are bashed here.

Again with European answers!
Of course the EU spends more on childcare. But it has less than half our birth rate, and while you argued that led to more women in the workforce, you didn’t share your work. There are many other possible explanations. Moreover, you didn’t even address women ownership/leadership of companies in the EU. I suspect the difference, if any, is not huge.

Imagine - an economic podcast turned political
Used to love this show - but with modern day culture I’ve listened to it turn more and more biased. If you know nothing about the topics then everything they explain makes sense. Used to be my favorite
I hate the new subscription model. I already give money to npr, so now I have to give 2.99 per show I like in order to listen to episodes? Even if I do that for 3 shows, thats $9 a month! Quit trying to bleed your customers dry. I was under the impression that we would still be able to listen to episodes for free since there are advertisements. But now there are episodes of planet money and shortwave that are locked completely unless I pay 2.99 a month for every show I listen to (like 6 or 7 npr shows normally) . I hate this and it’s getting pretty close to me hating NPR at this point.

No more free episodes?
I've been listening to the Planett Money podcast for a long time. I'm hoping that this is just a glitch!... Today the download of episode #1453 (Summer School2) was removed from all of my devices. I've had it since it came out last Tuesday. When I try to download it again, I am asked to subcribe! I guess you are not getting enough subscribers to the ad free version? Removing/hijacking episodes that I already own and asking for money does the opposite.

Growing up planet money
I’ve been listening to Planet Money for about seven years now, and I think it takes the cake for being the most influential podcast on my life, so far. Over the years, it has introduced me to subjects such as index funds, thinking on the margin, the Pigou club (carbon tax), Ben Bernanke, the origin of television re-runs, human genome patents, and Modern Monetary Theory. It is also the reason I am now an avid beekeeper (“The Bees Go To California” episode). Thanks for inspiring me to learn more about economics.

Milk in a bag was in the U.S. too…
I grew up in WI. There was a time when the milk was available in a bag. We had a yellow jug, with a slit in it where you would pour the milk out. You put in the bag, cut the bag with a scissors and then you got your milk. I don’t recall WHY it was done and don’t recall when it stopped. Just wanted to correct the notion that it was never in the U.S. Kind regards, ~ Jeff Buckley Chicago

Re: ‘One Hack…’
This is a great topic but, stumbles a bit. Host/interviewer needs to be tougher on the guest/expert, and not paraphrase, extrapolate and assume on their behalf. Step back out the way and just nudge. What’s important about this hack is they found the week point in the ‘secure system’ and fully exploited it. Lesson: There is no fool-proof system; there is ALWAYS a vulnerability….. Just like crypto currency, open ledger and block chain. Would love to see more from Planet Money on these topics.

Wish Sarah Gonzalez would stick to one accent and be more professional.
Why does she do this change of accents? She can perfectly speak both languages. It’s very unprofessional, it seems like lack of confidence. Stick to one or the other… I am perfectly bilingual too. And I don’t do it… it’s so annoying… very unprofessional. There are some absolutely excellent episodes, for example the largest battery, the Salmon Taboo to mention a few. DIY Reparations? Really?… NPR? Why don’t you investigate deeper into problems, instead of putting gasoline into the race fire… 88% of millionaires in the USA are self-made (this includes every race). There is work to do, but everyday this is improving, but podcasts like this is creating a fake rage with people… and will not unite or bring us together. We need to find a middle ground, stop putting gasoline on a fire that has been getting smaller and smaller, but these things never let it die.

Sara Gonzalez... Ugh
Her voice is so annoying! Must she accentuate every word with a Spanish accent? It’s totally fine if you have an accent. But she goes back and forth from accent to no accent and it sounds really fake and like she is trying too hard. That episode where she said ‘cilantro’ honestly sounded like a nail on the chalkboard. Super woke, used to be much better, hope it will be again
The podcast never really used to have a political mindset. Sure, it’s from NPR so you’re going to get a liberal bias but it wasn’t ever really overt until the last year. Lately, the show has devoted episodes to the altruism of pure Marxist socialism, the nobility of 1:1 “reparations”, the perils of a shift to free markets in India, and more. There is still a lot of really good economics-grounded content in this show but it is becoming overwhelmed by the social commentary and tie-ins with extremely liberal podcasts like Invisibilia. I’m giving this podcast three stars because it used to be five but it’s trending toward one. Hey show producers ... listen to your episodes from a few years ago. You’ll be shocked at how much better they were. Stick to the facts, avoid the political biases.

I am a big fan of PM. However, this story is at odds with a recent LA Times story. The LA Times indicates the janitor’s story is largely fabricated. Who should I believe? The LA Times story seems more fact oriented, while the PM story seems more about thinly veiled racism in corporate America, and the heroic janitor who persevered. What level of research did PM or NPR do to publish this story? How does PM and NPR reconcile the dichotomy? Did PM get dooped?

It’s ok
I think it’s important to hear many perspectives about the economy and this show can have some very interesting topics. However, I feel that everything has turned into a race issue in the last 6 months or so and not economics. I also don’t appreciate the belittling/snarky tone sometimes used by the hosts. DIY Reparations
This episode was poorly researched and offered only one side to this argument. Top quotes: “Give your money away to black people, if you’re not black... every week. Give your money away” “Your family has wealth... it’s not hard work... it’s racism” I’m sorry. My family are immigrants who did not own slaves, faced racism and injustice, worked hard, and never asked for handouts. We have white skin. Are we racist? According to this podcast we are. I time shift my playing of podcasts, all of my subscribed show play oldest to newest based on release date. Recently NPR shows have been marked “This Show in Unavailable” when I play it thru CarPlay. I downloaded Apple Podcasts just to leave this review (Spotify FTW). Just finished the MicroFace episodes and they were fantastic. This podcast is great for anyone interested in particulars of the business world 🌎 be it how to license a superhero, how zoos trade rather than buy/sell animals, how an NBA basketball player created affordable shoes (The Starbury), y mucho más. They partially focus on current events, but the timeless episodes are my favorites by far. Soooo great! They are funny but not obnoxious comedian podcast funny – witty, quirky, smart funny. As a brown person the reparations episode makes me sick
This is hard for me but honestly growing up poor alongside so many people of different backgrounds makes me see the US as a class struggle rather than a race issue. Even the idea that black people are being murdered by the police doesn’t line up with the arrest by arrest analyzation. This no longer feels like an economic podcast rather a news podcast pushing one perspective without real analyzation of the facts. It’s really makes me sad and I find it hard to listen to.

DIY Reparations
This episode is disgusting. The media are feeding the sense entitlement for certain groups in America and they’re developing unrealistic expectations. As a white man, I feel no responsibility for what people with my skin color did generations ago. My family wasn’t even in this country when slavery existed. I don’t come from a wealthy family but to assume because I’m White that what money I DO have is the product of racism and not my own hard work is extremely racist. If you think I owe you money because I’m white, YOU are the racist!

Socialism 101
No objectivity in this show. Narrators and guest don’t even mention China and it’s version of authoritarian socialism. They also put little to no focus on government bureaucrats, with no business experience, running the economy rather than business people.

It’s not really leftist bias...
Most of the. “Leftist bias” is just planet money stating the facts. Sometimes yes it’s does show the facts in a way that puts the right in a bad light when that’s the conclusion they come to.

Great episode on Socialism 101
I stopped listening to this podcast a while ago because it got pretty repetitive, but the latest episode that focused on a basic explanation of socialism was very good. I hope the show will continue to feature more economists from outside of the US/capitalist-centric economic establishment.

This is a lie
Go to Cuba and you will now what is to be a poor person all the time, no cycle. This person only know the theory about socialism, please give me an example of a successful socialism country. Why the did no tell you about the history of socialism. I’m a Cuban guy, they know nothing about socialism or communism. In cuba no one is the owner of the company, so no one care about the company. That the way that works, the corruption on top of everything. When the say the people are the owner, that’s not true, the government is the owner of everything, you have nothing. So when some one have the power (most of the time the president). They don’t want to take off , because at the end they are the owners of the country. That way all the socialism country has presidents for 40 or 60 years.

Propaganda
I have listened to NPR since I was 18, but they have gone for far left they make no attempt to be reasonable or factual and have become a full on propaganda media source. The episode “Socialism 101” was the last straw for me. I used to get actual advice on how to improve my finances from this show, now they are using their financial advice show to explain how capitalism is racist, sexist and anti immigration by a socialist. None of which is true, he literally had no data to back up anything he said.

Less
I really enjoyed Planet Money during its first several years, but over time it has become less and less about economics/finance, and it reached a point today where I finally decided to unsubscribe. That came when I listened to the episode “We Buy A Superhero: Loophole”. I ask anybody to listen to this 20 minute podcast and tell me: How is it focused on economics/finance/money any more than any other podcast episodes? It’s not. All it contains are jokes and pop culture discussions. Then consider that this isn’t a single 20 minute podcast episode, but rather an entire mini-series of episodes, ostensibly about buying a superhero. I’ve only listened to the first 2 such episodes, but so far there’s no more than ~5 minutes of econ-related content, and that’s probably being generous. Planet Money was a great podcast when it began, but it has lost its way and devolved into just another pop culture podcast. I found the same was true of the Freakonomics podcast when I unsubscribed to it years ago.

Absolutely misleading. This is a politics podcast
Heavily SJW and left-leaning. Well, what did I expect, this is NPR. But stop calling this a podcast about the economy because this obviously isn’t. For every 1 economics-related podcast episode, there are at least 9 episodes about some leftist agenda they’re pushing. Like, no, it’s not just blacks that suffer inequalities. Whites, Asians, Latinos - why doesn’t NPR cover those?

Reporting Inaccuracies
I was listening to “Robinhood’s Very Bad Day” hoping to learn more about how they make money. I am concerned about some of the inaccuracies and misleading statements. For example it was stated that all brokerages use the same clearing house, but that doesn’t seem to be true, there are lots of clearing houses. Referring to the two Citadel institutions as being unrelated is misleading, that’s like saying Walmart and Sam’s Club are unrelated. I’m now questioning the quality of the reporting throughout Planet Money.

Can’t PM simply meet its Mission?
Wow! You don’t think that there is enough coverage of the craziness on every other media outlet including your regular NPR sources? I was looking for your outlet to listen to something other than craziness at the Capitol newsfeed that was on every other television and major radio outlet. If this was a hidden story, fine. But for you to dictate to me that I have to hear the NPR version of the election results and insurrection is very demeaning and patronizing. Your organization should not assume that it needs to fill other media lanes when it is so obvious this is the only story being covered. This is exactly where the nanny state and ultra liberals tend to go because they know so much more than everybody else. It is just silly. Please just stick to your mission and let the rest of us use our brains to figure out if and where we’re going to get our news. Thank you

Econ explained w/o offending 1%
I enjoy NPR and Planet Money is one of the reasons. But I have always felt that most people on your end operate under the unstated understanding that you cannot offend anyone by focusing on topics that pins the blame on powerful entities. So my question might be too bold but most of your listeners would like to know where the trillions of dollars in stimulus went. This seems like the perfect question for Planet Money to address even if the well connected and rich and powerful are embarrassed. And if you cannot find the money, that is important also. Most of us here on the receiving end of radio land would be interested to know that the Feds could send out a few trillion and not be able to answer basic tracking questions like where exactly did the money go.

This show is going down fast
When I started to listen this podcast it was a great combination of storytelling and life application. However, in the past few years it has gone downhill really fast. It started with their spinoff podcast the Indicator. The Indicator started off pretty well but it soon turned in to about 30% commercials and 40% leftist policies and talking points such as climate change, gender pay gap, and universal health care. Planet Money also started to go downhill. The original content that I once loved became more rare, and the episodes that were new were explicit and/or filled with anti-Trump speech. The most recent example of this podcast going downhill is their “fact checkers” not correcting them when they say Joe Biden is “President-elect”. He is not the president-elect till the electors cast their vote in Washington D.C. I want the old Planet Money that I used to have...

Used to like it, stopped subscription now
I liked this program when it talked about economic issues, but a few months ago it switched its programming to become yet another political podcast with an agenda that it was trying to peddle. It would be so much better if it was truly informative about the issues. For example, in the episode Frame Canada, they spent the entire time saying that businesses and political parties spin the news in their favor and stretch the truth (not exactly groundbreaking). Both sides do it. What would have been much more informative is a deeper dive into how the Canadian healthcare actually works. How much do taxpayers in different tax brackets pay for the Canadian healthcare system? What medical procedures are covered and what is not? What is the paperwork for approval like? What are the options if approval is denied? Can people get supplemental insurance? How much (if any) do customers pay out of pocket for “elective procedures”? What are wait times like? What Rx are covered? Etc.

Too Political; Not About Econ Trends
Since quarantine started, this podcast, like many other NPR podcasts, reported on political opinion topics. I really miss the apolitical, stat-focused podcast episodes. It’s completely understandable Planet Money staff have a political preference and see their outreach as an opportunity to make a meaningful difference. Centrists would greatly appreciate Planet Money being upfront with their political bias in affected areas. Thank you for reading!

Econ policies of candidates
Just listened to an episode that was very informative. I was super thankful it was only 18min long because I could barely tolerate the host. Host Garcia, could you please not shout the entire time? Wow. I’ll skip the episodes you host in the future.

- The story of "Monopoly" and American capitalismMonopoly is one of the best-selling board games in history. The game's staying power may in part be because of strong American lore — the idea that anyone, with just a little bit of cash, can rise from rags to riches. Mary Pilon, author of The Monopolists: Obsession, Fury, and the Scandal Behind the World's Favorite Board Game . But there's another origin story – a very different one that promotes a very different image of capitalism. (And with two sets of starkly different rules.) That story shows how a critique of capitalism grew from a seed of an idea in a rebellious young woman's mind into a game legendary for its celebration of wealth at all costs. This episode was made in collaboration with NPR's Throughline. For more about the origin story of Monopoly, listen to their original episode Do Not Pass Go . This episode was produced by Emma Peaslee, mastered by Natasha Branch, and edited by Jess Jiang. The Throughline episode was produced by Rund Abdelfatah, Ramtin Arablouei, Lawrence Wu, Laine Kaplan-Levenson, Julie Caine, Victor Yvellez, Anya Steinberg, Yolanda Sangweni, Casey Miner, Cristina Kim, Devin Katayama, and Amiri Tulloch. It was fact-checked by Kevin Volkl and mixed by Josh Newell. Subscribe to Planet Money+ in Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org/planetmoney1 comments1
