- #091: What You Should Be Doing to Keep Your Kids from Losing Academic Skills This Summer!Whether it’s a long Winter Break, Spring Break or Summer Break, it’s important to understand that your child could lose academic skills simply because their brain is not being exercised and stretched enough to keep the momentum of what was learned during the time leading up to the break. That’s why after every long break, teachers spend days sometimes weeks re-teaching children how to behave in school, classroom expectations, and other routines that they may have forgotten. Much of this time is also spent reviewing the previous year’s content in order to rejog their memories so that they can begin building upon skills once learned. To minimize academic regression for your child, I talk about some things you can do to prevent what educators call the “Summer Slide”. When I work with shy children, they are often battling a self-confidence issue that can easily be worked on. So let’s take a deep dive into these two common childhood issues to help you determine next steps in supporting your child. - Parent Them Successful May 23 · 40m #089: The 5 Most Common Childhood Mental Illnesses and How To Reduce the SymptomsWe don’t talk enough about childhood mental illnesses, and so that’s why this episode is dedicated to just that. There was a study published in the January 2022 issue of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics of North America, and the study found that, overall, 21.8 percent of U.S. children ages 3 to 17 have one or more of the common mental, emotional, and behavioral health conditions assessed. The prevalence of mental health problems across U.S. children ranged from about 15 to 60 percent, increasing with the type (social, relational, or both) and number of these risks that children had been exposed to. And of course, schools are NOT always fully equipped to deal with them. This is why it’s so important for parents and caregivers to take charge of their child’s care and know how to best support them in the process. You are your child’s best advocate. Our special guest, School Psychologist Martin Barriga, shares more about the top 5 common childhood mental illnesses and how parents and caregivers can help children manage their symptoms. *EMAIL LIST* Click here to join my email list for more free content to help you on your parenting journey! or go to strongermindsstrongeryouth.com/jointhelist *REACH OUT & SHARE* Email me your stories to share with others parents just like you @ jessika@strongermindsstrongeryouth.com *CONNECT WITH ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!* & *TAG ME IN YOUR STORIES!!!* #jessikashields or @strongermindsstrongeryouth Get Social to Stay Connected!!! - #088: Discover 10 Growth Mindset Hacks That Will Improve Your Child's Quality of LifeIn this episode, I teach you how to hack your child’s mindset and guess what. You will have to hack yours too! Sometimes we may think that we are encouraging our child when we say “good job” and “you’re so smart”, but the pressure that these statements place on our kids often backfire and cause them to not want to try new challenges due to the fear of failure. A child with a growth mindset will look for challenges instead of shying away from them. They often live purposeful and fulfilled lives. - #87: The 3 Things You Must Know to Support Your Child When A Crisis HitsIn this episode, I talk about what you can do to support your child when a crisis hits. When you think of crisis as it relates to schools, you may think about a school shooting or tragedy that happens during the school day. But a crisis can also be the death of a classmate, teacher, or favorite administrator. Sometimes these events are predictable as in the case with a person battling cancer, but others can be unforeseen such as in the case of a car accident that happens over the weekend. Nevertheless, parents, you are often in a position to provide a large amount of support to your child when such incidents happen, and to help you be more prepared, I share 3 things you MUST know to support your child when crisis hits. I discuss possible reactions, possible supports, and possible coping strategies, that are all evidence-based. You never know when you will need to use this skill. There are just so many benefits to teaching your child the creative process and our special guest, Drew Vernon, child development advocate from Tonies®, is going to help you understand your role as a parent. - #080: What Should the School Do for My Child with ADHD?In this episode, I share 10 important accommodations that will support your child’s learning if they struggle with ADHD. According to the CDC, more than 6 million children in the United States have the disorder. About a third of those were diagnosed when quite young - between the ages of 2 and 5. The CDC also estimates that almost 1 in 10 children have the disorder today. That’s a much higher number than 20 years ago, when ADHD was diagnosed in just over 1 in 20 children. So, that’s why it’s so important for you to know what strategies work and what types of accommodations you can ask for that will better support your child’s learning. Keep in mind that this can be applied to both school and home environments. ADHD should not hinder your child from being successful. Even if reading is not a struggle, sometimes getting them to read in general can be a challenge. You may not know this about me, but I used to be an English teacher. I taught 8th graders at the middle school level before moving on to teach 9th graders at the high school level. - #73: What You Need to Know About the SAT, the ACT, and the College Admissions ProcessIn this episode, we discuss one of my favorite topics…college preparation and admissions. Yes! The reason this is so exciting for me to discuss is because I enjoy seeing our youth really step into the plan for how they envision their future lives. For some children, they are the first in their families to go to college. For others, they may be following a family tradition of some sort, but nevertheless, it is an exciting and yet emotional time for parents and children alike. So today, you are in for a treat! I am interviewing an expert in this area of what it takes to really prepare for these moments and how to use the SAT and ACT as leverage in a time when these tests are no longer requirements for admissions. We are going to get clarity on exactly what we need to know, and parents, I’m excited to be a part of your journey. Maybe you have a child who is a perfectionist and they just break down if they get a B. Or maybe your child has a history of struggling in school. Maybe they just give up trying after they see that first D or F. It could be that your child is somewhere in the middle, floating along that C range where the both of you know that they can do better. Now, if you’re the fortunate parent who doesn’t stress over grades and whose child doesn’t stress either, well just count yourselves fortunate enough to be anomalies. For most of us, there is some stress centered around the outcome of grades. In this episode, I share 10 things to be cautious of when too much emphasis is placed on grades because it can be very detrimental to your child’s mental health.
