one of my “comfort podcasts”
something about the way they both speak is very soothing. and content-wise, even when there’s difficult subject matter, I never come away feeling worse. their conversations are funny and thought-provoking, and they approach many subjects with a refreshing humility. they have a really nice conversational dynamic too. good stuff!

Came for a summary left because of excessive commentary
Normally I tolerate commentary but it’s so unclear when the summary actually starts. Start recording after you’re done catching up and bantering

had to write in to express my love after all this time listenin’ when I heard andrew say: “listen, listen, listen- it is a talking cat; i’m not gonna sugarcoat it” and then, later in the same episode, craig said: “we can come back to talking about donkey and shriek whenEVER you want”

Great listen
I found Craig and Andrew while listening to a collaboration with What Should I Read Next. I am hooked- 500 plus episodes about books! I’m having a great time listening to episodes about books I’ve already read so I’m listening to them out of order. I just heard the Turkish delight episode. Hysterical. Thank you for continuing to talk books with each other.

Come on already
I found this podcast over the weekend. It looked very intriguing. I tried to listen to my first episode with them on the book Middlesex… Which is just a fantastic read! I have no idea which host was giving the summary of the story but it was painful to listen to. I get that they are giving an overview but it sounded like he did not even read the story. Had trouble explaining what was even happening, where it was happening, who the characters were… The other host kept posting and asking questions, pertinent questions by the way, and the one doing the story couldn’t answer. Kept saying that they would get to it. They never got to it. Butchered! I have a bunch of these episodes saved but I just cannot bring myself to even try to listen to another. I am so bombed!

Excellent
This show is delightful! It’s both informative and humorous at the same time. The hosts have a fun dynamic together and overall have great chemistry. They also put a lot of effort into learning more about the author and the history of the book, which gives a whole new perspective on the books that they are reading. Some reviews do mention that they talk about their political views too much, and I would have to disagree. Their views are only brought up if it’s relevant to the book discussion, or if something major has happened in current events (both of which are rare cases). In any case, this podcast is absolutely worth your time.

They dive into a variety of genres and give us all an excuse to skip some of the “important” books that nobody has time for. Quality back catalog. Thanks guys! Keep up the quality podcasting.

Not bad.
It’s a good podcast, and I enjoy them talking about novels. Mildly funny and pretty clear on the plot. But! Sometimes I think they struggle with world building and sime fantast. It doesn’t ruin the podcast at all! But you might want to skip some episodes.

Here’s the good news—there’s no need to listen to these two. There’s no opinion they will ever utter that deviates from acceptable liberal programming. You already know what they think, and it’s simply tedious and trite.

The best show about books
Craig and Andrew are hilarious, the guests are always wonderful and I find my self laughing out loud multiple times every episode. Books are often handle with thoughtful insight and care, yet the show succeeds in not being too “L”iterature-ish. If you’re looking for a podcast on books, this is the one!

Easy and insightful book talk. Andrew and Craig speak intelligently without being snobby. Suggestion: please read something by Joyce Carol Oates! She’s one of my favorite authors and no bookish podcasts ever cover her, to my chagrin! Binge-worthy
I’ve been bingeing on Overdue for about 6 months, listening to the fresh episodes each week and spending the days in between with the earlier hundreds (I’ve gotten to #112 or so). I’m especially partial to their struggles with the racist and sexist elements in the selections. They often only get partway there in their analysis, but they acknowledge their limitations and encourage listeners to further their understanding. Their light-hearted digressions never fail to brighten my day.

Sweet n Smart Book Boys
At first I was listening out of academic interest and then 2020 happened and now this podcast is how I get my brain to make happy chemicals in the midst of even the most horrible events. I normally wouldn’t be able to enjoy a podcast that’s just two white men talking to each other HOWEVER these guys are committed to thoughtful intersectional analysis and are such obviously kind people it’s a relief to hear them discuss even the least feminist texts. The analysis is excellent, their deeply held beliefs are soothing and brave and important and listening in on this friendship is simply the best.

I listen to this podcast intermittently, but it’s always nice when I pop back in to see what they’ve been reading lately and find a lot of things I’ve read in the intervening time and get to hear the hosts take on it. It’s also a great way to re-acquaint myself with books I’ve read a long time ago without having to do a re-read, because time is short and there are so many good books out there! Keep up the good work, guys.

The best book podcast out there
I listen to a lot of book podcasts and Andrew and Craig are my favorites right now. I especially love Andrew’s voice but I like Craig’s book descriptions better :) I found this podcast by chance by searching for Mary Renault (so little is talked about this amazing writer) The structure of the show works really well as each week one of them introduces us to a book they read and the other person is asking questions about it. I listen to the books that I’ve read and also those I would like to read and also those that I think I will never read but maybe I should know about them :).

Elitist crap
I started listening to this podcast from the beginning and while it wasn't exactly deep literary analysis, that was fine - it was a nice way to re-experience books I've read or experience new books I'd never read. Until I got to the 50 shades episode. I was prepared for the book to be torn to shreds, and that was fine, I've never read it and am booty invested. What I was not expecting was for these dudes to insult writers of fanfiction. They said there's no overlap between fanfiction and good writing, that it is something kids grow out of, and also (how??) just porn for older women. The amount of elitism and sexism in this view of fanfiction completely put me off this podcast. Fanfiction is a legitimate form of literature that's only put down when it's written by women for free. If you've ever read Dante's inferno or the Aeneid, you've read fanfiction. Not to mention that it's a way female and queer audiences have been creating stories is they own when straight men have controlled the vast majority of content on screen for decades. The most powerful stories I've read, that affirmed my identity before I was able to access published queer content, was fanfiction. I'm not defending 50 Shades at all- from what I know of it, it's a poorly written story and even worse representation of a BDSM relationship. I'm just disgusted by the casual sexist elitism shown by the hosts.

Really enjoy this show. These guys cover high and low brow stuff in an entertaining and thoughtful way. I try to limit my listening to only the books that I’ve already read, but I’m often tempted by the “mini-series” shows that cover the heftier classics that I never got around to reading.

So many questions
Who are these people? Los Angeles social media influencer types, it seems like. They can’t add any sort of knowledge or experience to what they discuss, so what’s the point? I guess some people would say it has entertainment value. I guess some people are entertained by two ignorant lowest-common-denominator types giggling at hard-to-pronounce words and unfamiliar names, and scratching their heads in confusion anything slightly complex? Who is entertained by this, seriously? Try other literature podcasts. Lots of them have hosts that can actually bring something to the table. I’d suggest the Old Great Books Podcast for a start.

Funny and thoughtful
“Pippi Longstocking is a Greek god who walks among us in disguise, forever testing us in ways that we can never hope to live up to.” If you like the above observation and want to listen to two old friends make jokes and analyze literature, Overdue is the podcast for you! (If, on the other hand, you think that classic literature should never be lightly roasted and should only be examined in a Very Serious Manner, then you should probably look elsewhere.)

Great Literature Podcast
Overdue’s probably my favorite literature podcast. I enjoy their banter so much that they actually have motivated me to finish big long books just so that way I can get some more laughs while I practice the piano. They also provide some nice up-to-date commentary/perspective on books/authors that are a little stuck in their time, as well as a great exclusive interview with Emily Wilson, the first translator of The Odyssey. Overdue will make a fun, welcome addition to anyone’s regular podcast listening lineup.

Funny, but sometimes tone deaf
I didn’t want to rate them too poorly because I think the podcast is generally okay, but sometimes their discussions about enslaved characters or racial stories make me uncomfortable. Their rhetoric can be very belittling and irresponsible regarding those issues and maybe it’s because the stories are fiction,,, Idk, but it’s not a podcast I enjoy listening to because of this

Cliffnotes on the go!
No spoilers (for the podcast): I’m not sure what the term is but I’m the type of person who would 100% of the time would rather read the cliffnotes or a film summary than actually sit through a two hour movie (lazy?). I feel like if I can get the lesson/s or the idea with a shortcut and still be in the conversion I’m all for it. This podcast by Headgum (there are a few) is just that. Host duo Craig Getting and Andrew Cunningham review and summarize books (both fiction and not) they feel like the average bookworm has read. This premise relieves them of any guilt over spoilers so if you intend to read the books this pod probably isn’t for you (they do a big spoiler warning at the beginning of each one). Itunes has 1,641 ratings with 1,441 of those being 5 stars (that’s 87%) giving the pod an average rating of 4.5 stars accompanied by 561 reviews. This weekly podcast puts out a new episode every Monday. Episodes are about an hour long with 458 episodes ready for you to binge (one of the largest vaults I’ve seen). Owltail has the top episodes as Ep 200 - Infinite Jest, by David Foster Wallace, and Ep 050 - Fifty Shades of Grey, by E.L. James. My favorites have been Ep 317 - Suffer the Children, by Craig DiLouie (Bonus Episode) and Ep 424 - My Sister the Serial Killer, by Oyinkan Braithwaite. Script is a bit comedy based, music is fine, and the hosts’ voices are great for bedtime. Similar Pods: Audiobook Club, All the Books, What Should I Read Next? The New Yorker: Fiction, Selected Shorts, Ologies, TED Radio Hour, Noble Blood, Just the Right Book with Roxanne Coady, Literary Disco, Bookworm, The Paris Review, Annotated, Legal Wars More reviews on insta @themastercast

Too Much Snark
I listened to a handful of episodes of books that I read and enjoyed, and unfortunately, that was a mistake on my part. The hosts spend nearly the entire episode summarizing the plot of the book, adding very little analysis or even literary criticism. However, since one of the hosts has always not read the book (this is a horrible setup for a book discussion) they spend most of their time interjecting with snarky comments, usually making fun of the author, themes, characters, and always taking the book completely out of context. Any other remaining time is spent on inside jokes or criticizing the world at large. It’s extremely off putting and reminds me of those obnoxious pseudo-intellectual boys you’d find at college parties, who think they’re the funniest, smartest humans on earth. Some specifics: within the first five minutes of The Secret History pod, one of the hosts forgot the title of the book. One of the most popular and acclaimed contemporary novels and they can’t be bothered to remember the title! The Pride and Prejudice episode spent about 30 minutes making fun of the plot and misunderstanding Austen’s use of sarcasm. 19th Craig also said Austen was “post-Dickens” so obviously his research was not very thorough. The In the Woods episode spent an inordinately long time bashing the fact that Tana French created a fictional murder squad in Dublin. Why this is a problem for these readers, we’ll, one reader, is beyond me. I don’t like their tone or approach to basically anything other than each other. They seem to ridicule or at least look down on everything they read, and they constantly try to apply current, modern culture, thought, social constructs to classic literature. It’s a shame, because the breadth of novels they read (classic lit, popular fiction, children’s books, etc) is quite large. If anyone else hosted this podcast, it would probably be wonderful.

Something for everyone
Great if you are an avid reader, but also great if you don’t read or aren’t familiar with the works being discussed! Andrew and Craig do a great job of balancing plot synopsis, discussion of larger themes of the work, providing real-world context for the book and reactions to it, and good, friendly banter. The result provides an easy entry point into the books covered and makes you feel like you’re part of a fun discussion with friends.

What genre?
I had listened to about 20 episodes of this podcast when, on “The Satanic Verses” episode, one of the hosts said “we’re a comedy/book podcast”. All along, I’d been listening to it as a straightforward book discussion podcast, and that was the first I’d heard about any “comedy” aspect of the premise. So I enjoy this show a lot and greatly admire the hosts’ dedication to getting so many great books read, and such a wide variety of them. But just a warning: if you hear that “comedy/book podcast” description up front and you come here looking for that, I would go elsewhere haha No diss, but while these guys joke around like friends do, this is really *just* book talk.

I’m absolutely addicted to this podcast! I found Overdue through reddit (r/books). None of my friends read, and I have no one to talk about books, so I often turn to reddit and when I was recommended this podcast I was so excited to check it out. Over righteous
The reviews of books are well done with lots of background about the authors, time period, and society expectations. However the ability for the hosts to believe themselves above anything they talk about; either rural communities, history, relationships, ect is easily recognizable. If reflection and evaluation is what these two aim for they need to learn how walk in someone else’s shoes or how other people might think who are not themselves.

This podcast brings me so much joy. I love listening to Andrew and Craig talk about the books I have loved, hated, and everything in between. I have a BA and MA in English Literature and taught writing in higher ed for a while, so I have read a ton of books, but they always surprise me with their insights. I really appreciate that they take the time to research the context of each book - it makes me feel like I’m back in grad school taking classes and BSing about books with my friends. Also, I often find myself laughing out loud while listening (my husband looks at me like I’m crazy). Thanks for making my week a little more fun!

Their ability to give the low down on books of all kinds in cohesive and interesting ways has seriously led me to some marvelous reads as well as given me the courage to begin writing myself. Thank you Overdue!

I listen primarily to true crime pods, and needed something different. This is different and absolutely delightful. I stumbled upon it via Buzzfeed and am thrilled that I did. I love the obvious friendship between the hosts and the music is great!

Mediocre
The dozen or so I’ve listened to show very little analysis and, more to the point, they don’t seem to like anything they read. Yes, there is humor and they work well together, but I rather ask a friend for their opinion.

Good for reviews on books I’ve read and want to go deeper on, but also for learning if I want to read certain books by hearing their review. Humor, sincerity and not taking it too seriously - great podcast.

Don’t expect a grad level course, but give it a chance.
Do you like reading and talking about books but find it’s hard to have meaningful conversations about them because you or your peers have lost an intellectual step or two since college? Be honest. Overdue feels like hanging out with a couple of funny (read goofy in the best sense), bookish friends to create those magical literary conversations. Just add a lot of dumb puns and silliness. Seriously though, I particularly appreciate their willingness to grapple with themes of race, class, xenophobia and privilege when engaging with text. We hear your discomfort gentlemen, but I appreciate the dialogue.

Hilarious and Considerate
I love the range of titles they cover. They come from the perspective of people who have not earned English degrees so I love it. It shows that you can still have an appreciation for fascinating stories, characters, and themes without having to commit to 4+ years of focus on it. They have a good balance of humor but I am also highly regard them in their efforts not just to sample diverse authors and books, but also to handle difficult subjects with care and consideration. These are good good boys.

The only podcast I’ve ever stuck with
I love this podcast! The hosts are so goofy that I find myself chuckling and hooting while driving in the car. I’ve enjoyed listening to episodes that cover books that I’ve read, and sometimes they offer really interesting views or interpretations I haven’t previously considered. Sometimes they don’t, but it is still fun to listen to them talk about the book and their reactions to it. My favorite way to listen to this podcast is by listening to episodes of books I haven’t yet read but have been meaning to. A lot of the times their episodes hype me up to read the book when I’d long given up on the prospect of doing so. They are quite sensitive to a lot of the heavy topics that are often covered in literature, such as race, gender, and mental health, which I really appreciate. It’s my go to podcast to listen to where it’s enjoyable but I still feel like I’m doing something productive. I highly recommend if you have a list of books you’ve been meaning to read and need a little push to get started.

Not recommended for fans of books, comedy, or interesting conversation
I made sure to listen to at least five episodes of this podcast to make sure I wasn't just hitting some duds, but man, these guys are unlistenable. One guy reads the book and explains it to the other, usually having already forgotten half of it. It's pretty much basic plot summary and nothing deeper. The one who hasn't read it is usually desperate to seem cleverer and cooler than the book read, and the two of them sound like edgelords you might've met in high school English class who read the SparkNotes the hour before class and can't wait to talk about how dumb the book is. And then there are the "jokes." It's more like one guy will say something that barely qualifies as funny and the other will laugh as if there's a gun to his head. You've never heard more forced sounding laughter. Here's an example from a recent episode about Terry Pratchett's "Guards! Guards!": Guy 1: So it sounds like Pratchett had a pretty successful nineties. Guy 2: Yeah, Pratchett and Weezer! Guy 1: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA So that's the level of discussion we're talking about here. Nothing interesting is said about the book and you'll barely laugh. How this podcast is so popular truly baffles me.

A review! Overdue is one of my favorite podcasts. It’s been my constant companion on work commutes, in the garden, walking the dog, and cooking dinner for years now. Andrew and Craig are great hosts, and they pick (or accept from their Patreon patrons) such interesting titles. I’ve read more than one book on their recommendation, including some I would never have picked up otherwise. Highly recommended for anyone who reads and wants to read more.

I finally listened, Andrew!
A few months ago I googled "best book podcasts" to see if there was a podcast that could pique my interest. I tried a few that were kinda blah until I landed on Overdue, and I've been listening every chance I can get since then. For some reason it took me 190 episodes of Andrew saying "Do rate and review us on iTunes..." before I actually promoted you guys. SHAMEFUL. I listen half for bookish insight and half for a good 'ole goofy time. If my husband hears me listening to a different podcast, he says, "Hey, listen to 'Greg' and 'Shawn'. I like it that they make you laugh." So here it is - a well-deserved and overdue five-star rating and review. Cheers!

A Fun Book Discussion
Andrew and Craig are obviously two good friends as such their discussions can digress, get a little silly, and be a bit shallow from a literary criticism perspective. If you're looking for a serious book review, you've kind of missed the point. However if you're looking to enjoy a conversation about popular books, gain enough knowledge to answer a jeopardy question or have a "feel" for a book, and enjoy passing time while doing some mindless tasks, this podcast is really quite nice. Side note: My kid is a few months older than Andrew's and I've never related so much to someone as when he started back from paternity leave.

A very unpleasant listen...
(Minor spoilers for Annihilation below) I listened to the first 20 minutes of the Annihilation episode but had to shut it off. I am of course biased in that I very much enjoy Jeff VanderMeer and was interested to hear some new perspectives on the first book of his Southern Reach Trilogy. However, the format of this pod is apparently for only one host to read the book and for the other two to do some cursory googling on it before recording. This format is not conducive to a meaningful discussion, especially seeing as the hosts seem to have approached this book with pure derision. The banter between the hosts is as cringe-inducing as a group of teenagers competing to be the most contrarian. I am all for criticism, but if the reviewers refuse to even engage with a book, I question why they bother review it at all. Some examples: The hosts take issue with the Biologist (main character of Annihilation) concealing some suspicious goings-on in Area X. What they don’t explain (perhaps because most of them did not read the book), is that misinformation, conspiracy, suspicion, and paranoia are themes throughout this series. Later on, one host claims VanderMeer deliberately omitted physical descriptions for his characters so he could later “flip the script” and say, bet you thought they were all “white ladies.” This is a strange conclusion to leap to, especially considering the very first chapter of this very short book establishes a premise for not including in-depth character descriptions and names. The host then dives into a misinformed retelling of casting choices for the loose movie adaptation of Annihilation, written and directed by Alex Garland. At this point of the pod, I decided to tune out. When a reviewer continually says “From why I’ve read about this book...” I start to wonder why I am even listening to them.

Enjoyable!
An algorithm recommended this podcast to me several weeks ago, and while I was interested in the content I was hesitant to give it a go because, like, it’s 2020, and if I wanted to listen to two men talk at me about the books they’ve been reading, I would literally just need to take out my headphones on the bus any day of the week. I was in dire need of a new podcast, though, so I scrolled through the catalogue and decided to give a listen to the episode about “Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson, as I’m familiar with the book and I figured it would be a pretty brutal litmus test for whether or not the hosts’ opinions were ones I could tolerate. I am delighted to say that the guys handled the sensitive topics in the book respectfully, and that was enough for me to keep listening. I’m now over fifty hours into their backlog and have been enjoying it. Overdue avoids the pitfall that book podcasts sometimes fall into, in which it can feel like some guy I don’t know is trying to ~*educate*~ me by talking down at the audience. Overdue doesn’t do that. The show is set up so the hosts are informing each other, asking questions and engaging in a way that feels good to listen to. They have a good rapport, and don’t ever veer into distasteful jokes that punch down or make me, a human woman, feel uncomfortable. Which is significant! It feels like it shouldn’t be, but it is. I’ll dump a podcast in heartbeat if I get a whiff of any kind of sexist/homophobic/racist/ableist/etc garbage opinions, but Overdue’s been holding strong. Entertaining and easy to dive into -- I’d definitely recommend Overdue!

This podcast makes my day go by fast. The hosts are intelligent, informative, and pleasant to listen to all while speaking about something I want to hear about. Most of the time. While Andrew was painful to listen to in the first few episodes he quickly got his bearings and I now look forward to his sometimes diffident story telling. Cue Craig, his more composed counterpart, who could drag a story out of anyone. What could be disastrous separately is a symphony together as they pair up to delineate all the books from Classics to Fantasy. Fear not, it is not all seriousness. Included in this recount presentation you are accosted with frivolity, dumb assery, shameless money soliciting, Craig’s incessant yawning, and a deep dive into a world where things like Y-Aness and bag shoes (patent pending), are a thing. Goop doctors need not apply.

Nope, awful
Painful. 2 men giggling like little boys about books that they can’t remember the beginnings of, because memory. Notes would be too adult I suppose. 1 example of what REALLY makes them laugh? Whether or not Dove soap and Dove chocolate bars are created by the same company. Side splitting. Also? Curse words. Good luck hanging on for the actual book review through their childhood development.

Thank you for such a quality podcast about a wide variety of books from all genres! I love listening to episodes of books I’ve already read. I’ve also listened to episodes about books I wasn’t excited to read or didn’t know if I should bother to read, which is so helpful. I use this podcast in one of two ways: 1. To see what they think about a book I just read. Usually I agree and they add humor to whatever it is. 2. Pretty good!
I usually just listen to the episodes of the books I’ve already read or books I know I will never ever read (great time saver). Craig is awesome. The commentary is sometimes funny. Andrew is ok, but often sounds either super sleep deprived from child-rearing or like he’s enjoyed a few drinks beforehand (which makes for some interesting insights). Anyway, it’s like chatting with books about some guys you just know from the neighborhood. They don’t get too cerebral and that’s greatly appreciated.

Good times with (internet stranger) friends
I'm currently working through the episodes since I only started listening a few months ago. I figured I'd leave a rating on here since Craig and Andrew keep asking me to and I'm starting to feel guilty about not doing this before! Anywho, this is a great podcast about books (haven't necessarily been meaning to read most of them but I feel somewhat smarter knowing the basic plotline). I enjoy the friendly banter and especially when Craig would freak out about weird plots or when Andrew is just generally upset on how bad a book is. Back to listening! I'm currently on episode 82 and I feel like I won't catch up for about 3 years, but I'm not mad about it.

This is one of my favorite podcasts. Whether Andrew & Craig are covering a favorite book (Wheel of Time, the Hobbit) or a book I have never been able to get through, every episode has me grinning like an idiot. “Stuff You Should Know” for books
When searching for a book podcast I had the sort of nebulous idea that I’d like a podcast where the hosts talked about books in the style of “Stuff You Should Know”: sometimes on topic, sometimes not, always entertaining, essentially educational. I was pleasantly surprised to find such a podcast actually existed. Andrew and Craig are charismatic hosts who provide cocktail party cliffs notes for the important books I haven’t read or don’t want to read and insightful and/or humorous commentary on those that I have read. I like the meandering, tangential nature of the show so boo to the haters who say they need to stay on topic. I also think it’s a great format to have one host who has not read the book, providing an essential viewpoint to the listeners who also have not read the book.

I won’t reveal which books were “mine”
But it’s all in good fun. These guys (and their guests) will make fun of your favorite books. And authors. And probably your favorite other things. They won’t know enough about the books or the authors, because if they did they couldn’t make some of the jokes. Sometimes basic plot points will escape them. Fine. When they aren’t reading “my books”, they’re entertaining. And even when they are, it’s interesting to see a different perspective. So I can enjoy it, even if they really have a grade school (at best) understanding of “my” books.

Cuckoo's Nest
I've been listening to the "Cuckoo's Nest" podcast with interest as I read the book and saw the film a long time ago. One aspect of McMurphy I appreciated was his awareness of how conditioned the other patients were by Ratchet or the institution. They were drugged daily, prevented from doing much for recreation, and I assume given ECT and put in isolation. There are many times McMurphy brings them joy such as when they are watching a blank tv screen McMurphy acts as announcer of a baseball or other sports game and the ensemble cast eventually get into it with excitement. I am surprised you missed describing how primitive the electroshock therapy was and cruel really. You also missed that after McMurphy strangled Ratchett, they lobotomized him. The chief smothered him with a pillow out of empathy. At least in the film, but I think in the book too. He went from being the most alive character to becoming a vegetable because of the institution. Chief breaks a window by throwing something huge through it out of rage and escapes. I think you all focused too much sexism and racism. The book and film reflected the times. Mostly I feel you guys are on target. You got off into Star Trek a bit too much for me. Louise Fletcher has some much bigger film accomplishments you neglected. Thank you'

Couldn’t finish the first episode I listened to
I love listening to other people discuss books so when I saw this podcast, I was very excited to give it a go. I recently read “We have always lived in the castle” and wasn’t sure how I felt about it so I downloaded that episode of the podcast to hear their opinions. The format of the show is really strange. One of the hosts reads a book and tells the other about it. They announce this at the beginning of the show and I didn’t think much of it but got annoyed real quick when the host spends 5 minutes badly summarizing the first few chapters. Not only that, but the host that has not read the book makes assumptions about what’s going on in the story and then tries to turn it into a joke. The jokes aren’t even funny but they both have a lengthy cackle over them. With 25 minutes to go and only getting to the part in the novel where the town ladies come over for tea (basically the beginning of the book), I realized that they will never get to analyze the weirdness of the novel, the themes, the unreliable narrator, etc etc. Again, it doesn’t help that only one person has read it so the other one tries to stay relevant by adding useless commentary and laughing. I appreciate the effort and the fact that they are people making a podcast, but this one is definitely not for me.

Show is now: “Women write good. Men write bad.”
Things had been going downhill for a couple of years now that I stopped listening out of sheer exasperation. Then I saw they had an episode on Annihilation and decided to give them a second chance. I could not get past the intro. Ok, I get that white men are burned in effigy all over the place and by extension that includes white male authors. Obviously that includes Jeff VanderMeer, whose last name was intentionally mangled a couple of times so far in order to... what? Crack a dumb joke while straining to score a few Woke Points for bashing a white cis-gender male author? I can’t think of any other reason why, since I know they wouldn’t have done the same to woman writer. And as a WOC I find that patronizing in itself cause I know they’ll be excessively polite or reverent or try not to offend listeners like me. I used to enjoy this podcast when it was little more than lighthearted banter about books. But those were different times and now you can’t swing a straw man with hitting some political-adjacent garbage.

Lost a little respect.
The podcast has its issues. The hosts are more charming than the content itself. The content isn't great. Some episodes are better than others. The podcast contains both goofs and book reviews, but doesn't really commit to either. The goofs aren't funny enough, the reviews aren't sophisticated enough. If they were to edit the episode to move the pace along a bit more, add more goofs and more actual opinions on the themes of the books, or even add a third co-host with a little more knowledge....Then maybe they'd be more listenable. Honestly, the phantom tollbooth and wizard of oz episodes made me a little angry. I love those books, but the poor treatment of it by the hosts was a disappointment. It wouldn't be so bad...but they give far too many books that lack of respect. They mistreat a LOT of children's literature, and perfectly good reads in general. This podcast needs work.

Not What I Was Looking For, Happily
I was looking for a podcast which would talk about books and get into some real "literary" analysis of the text. I stumbled upon this podcast and found out that's the opposite of what Overdue is all about. However, I kept listening because it's a great product. The format of the show is tight, the banter is good, and they offer an outsiderish view on the books that can be refreshing. Occasionally they criticize texts through a lense that I find unhelpful or meaningless or even annoying. But even in those instances I've managed to enjoy the episodes because of the other stuff brought to the table.

Hilarious, thoughtful, and a great way to find new books.
Craig and Andrew are such funny and likable hosts. They never fail to make me laugh. This podcast has piqued my interest in so many books I wouldn’t have picked up otherwise and made me revisit ones I hadn’t thought about in a long time. Thanks for the great work guys!

The only podcast worth listening to
If you’re looking for a snobby lit class keep moving! Craig and Andrew provide a fresh perspective that is often missed among book circles. They’re just two dudes reading books and that is what makes them so great. Grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and enjoy the laughs. I promise you won’t regret it!

Ever since I stumbled upon this gem it has become one of my weekly staples. Andrew and Craig are funny, witty, and provide an objective view of the books they read while being aware of their own perceptions. Even the intro music immediately puts me in a good mood. If you love to read and discuss books– you have come to the right place. Keep up the good work my dudes! -Anna

Disrespectful and A Waste of Time
I had high expectations for this podcast given its interesting premise, however, after listening to a few episodes, I am sad to say their discussions are disappointingly perfunctory and rarely venture beyond plot summaries and their comments about many beloved literary classics oscillate between derision and infantile desinterest. I just listened to their episode on Jane Eyre and the simplistic analysis they provided of such a rich work of fiction combined with the evident lack of research and preparation made me not want to continue giving them my time. The podcasters seem charming enough, even if a little immature, and perhaps they would succeed in creating a good show if they persuaded a topic about which they are actually passionate. If you love literature, I suggest you skip this one.

Terrible
I was looking for a good book podcast and found this one. I was excited because the first episode dug into a book I absolutely loved, and featured some good analysis. Then I went into the backlog. Ooooh boy. These guys aren’t just uninformed, they’re dangerous. They throw accusations at writers without research, or worse: they ignore research that explains their questions. Do not listen.

Funny, Soothing, and Scintillating!
I love this podcast SO much! Craig and Andrew are hilarious, but at the same time, really calming. I find their author and book discussions really interesting, whether I've read the book in question or not. Great podcast if you love books or if you just want to listen to two friends discuss them!

Fun but cringe inducing at times
I’ve been listening to this podcast for years and have really enjoyed it! I love the back and forth between Andrew and Craig. However, I’m beginning to notice a vocal fry when Craig speaks and I have to turn down my volume until he stops talking. It’s intolerable. It also gets uncomfortable when Andrew constantly interrupts when Craig is speaking. I am still a huge fan of the show, but these are things I have noticed and cannot get past.

I found this podcast while I was on forced furlough over the winter and I haven’t stopped listening since. I’ve caught up on so many books I’ve been meaning to read and revisited ones I have. It has been so much fun recalling the stories I read long ago and hearing new takes on them. Keep up the awesome pod! Andrew and Craig are so funny and I love their repartee.

Shallow, But Endearing
I first discovered this show when I was looking for podcasts that discuss works of Thomas Pynchon when I stumbled across Overdue’s episode on Gravity’s Rainbow. I had pretty mixed feelings because it felt like the hosts really didn’t do the novel justice and reviewed it rather shallowly but I simultaneously found the hosts quite endearing and entertaining. I listened to a few more episodes about other favorite books of mine, and I just got hooked. Andrew and Craig (the hosts) assume no pretense of authority or special knowledge when it comes to their discussions, because that’s what they’re doing; they’re reading books and just talking about it. They aren’t reviewing the books and they aren’t tackling them from an overtly critical lens, which counter-intuitively has made it more appealing for me on my commutes. It’s just two goofy guys who love books riffing on about what they’re reading, and I’ve found that this is one of my favorite things to listen to on my long work commutes. Keep on, keepin’ on Andrew and Craig. You’ve got my support!

The Masterpiece of the East
I’ve been listening to Overdue for years now. Not only are Andrew and Craig actually funny but they can teach you allot about a book, movements, periods in history and more. If you listen to one of their episodes on a book you haven’t read before, you can just remember a couple of points from said episode and tell people you’ve read the book to impress others. Also I recommend A Boy and His Dog !!!

Shallow minded
I listened to the Unbearable Lightness of Being episode and I was terribly disappointed. They are making fun of/ criticizing the author for introducing a wealth of philosophical discussions and an innovative narrative. That’s exactly what makes this novel one of the best works in literature. Can you please be more welcoming of books that have more substance instead of just wanting everything to be shallow work from authors that are likely “fun at parties”?

Easy to binge, lovable dorks
I listen to 7+ episodes a week and I'm loving it. I have Andrew and Craig to thank for some wonderful reading I've done as of late, and also for the companionship... it's hard for me to find people to talk to about books, and this corner of the internet has been so comforting. A&C also bring some very wholesome giggles to my day! I often listen to them while doing chores and they have become my most solid "mother's helpers". 10/10 would recommend.

A Joy
I unabashedly love this show. Craig and Andrew strike a great balance of smart and goofy. I used to work in a bookstore, and listening to this podcast—complete with its synopses, jokes, and digressions—reminds me in the best way of chatting with booksellers about books and life. Whenever I’m feeling glum, listening to these two old friends banter about books & other geekery keeps my spirits up.

Love it.
I love this podcast. It is an enjoyable, relatable (to me) podcast where the two hosts speak about books they have read. They are smart, but not literary critics. They banter. They take occasional digressions, but always circle back to the book. This won’t appeal to everyone, but it checks all of the boxes for a great podcast for me!

Scattered, hit or miss
This podcast has some great content. I love that Andrew and Craig don’t just stick to the classics or literary fiction, or even books geared toward adults. They read popular fiction, genre fiction, genre-busting fiction, young adult, middle grade, and children’s books. It’s a great range for one podcast. I also appreciate that they give a little background information on the author. Sometimes, literary snobbery slips into the discussion, but Andrew and Craig are usually pretty good about acknowledging why certain books have gained popularity. However, some of their episodes are total misses for me. When they derail their conversations with irrelevant tangents, and spend more time laughing at each other’s summaries than providing actual content, I skip the episode. Sadly, this happens too often. Hopefully future episodes will be more focused than the batch I’ve listened to.

I talk about this podcast way too much
I confess that I subscribed to this podcast a year or so before I finally listened to it. Once I started listening, I binge-listened to it for about a month straight. After graduating from college, I missed having someone to talk to about books, and listening to Craig and Andrew is as good as having some smart, funny, thoughtful, friends to talk with about Literature (and other great works too). This podcast makes me laugh out loud but Craig and Andrew always have interesting and thoughtful analyses of the books they’ve read for the episode. I highly recommend this podcast.

Fun and Thoughtful
Overdue is just such a good time. Craig and Andrew are joys to listen to and I really appreciate the way they balance fun, joking talk with their more serious thoughts on the books that they’ve read. If you’re coming here for wall-to-wall laughs or for serious academic breakdowns of books you’re going to be disappointed, but personally I’m really happy with how they split the difference. As a former English major, listening to their more casual discussion of books is both a comfort and really entertaining. If you’re looking for a place to start, a few of my recent favorite episodes include 359 - Drowning Ruth by Christina Schwarz, 357 - 11/22/63 by Stephen King, and 337 - The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman.

Yikes
I came across this podcast as I was interested in reviews on the novel Confederacy of Dunces. Amazingly, one of the two podcasters had not read the book. As such, his comments as to various quoted passages added nothing to an appreciation for this work. Perhaps it is unfair to judge a podcast on just one episode. However, based on my limited sample size, there are far better and more intelligent book review podcasts available.

Best Book Podcast
I love this podcast and binge-listen at work. I like Andrew and Craig’s approach to the books. My fave book podcast.
I have tried just about every book podcast I could find, but this is definitely my favorite. I love that it is an in-depth plot synopsis of one book, AND that they cover both classic and contemporary literature...which other podcasts just don’t seem to do. It’s a great way to learn about famous or popular books that I may otherwise be disinclined to read on my own.

AMAZING, Have not stopped listening since I discovered them
Earlier this weekend my husband suggested I find a good podcast to listen to (I’m 26 but act more like an un-pop-cultured grandma most the time...). Since I spend most my free time cooking/baking/or scrolling for an embarrassing amount of time on Pinterest he suggested I listen to podcasts since he thought I would enjoy them. Found these guys on my Spotify account and listened to the first Twilight podcast (the very impressionable 300th episode) and I am obsessed. I love books, but sometimes can’t finish them because either I get bored or my attention span gets the best of me... either way, these are great because I get to learn about books I never read but wanted to and honestly I love the format of this podcast! Kind of feel like I’m listening to two really good friends just being friends but also having in depth discussions about the books. Wow This is long all im trying to say is this is great and i love this podcast!!!

The only podcast I've truly stuck with
I listened to some scattered episodes, and then finally just started near the beginning because of how much I like this podcast (though it feels bizzare listening to a time where there was a different president). Andrew and Craig just generally sound like a couple guys talking about books and general subjects. There's no pretention, no "tweed", they readily admit when they might not know something (while being fully willing to look stuff up), and can be at times both genuinely insightful and funny. That's not to say of course every episode is a gem. Sometimes the jokes don't work or their hearts just aren't in an episode, but by and large this is the only podcast that I've truly stuck with. I've learned about authors, books, plays, and more while having a great time listening to Andrew and Craig's laid back banter. Thank you, Andrew and Craig, for hosting an amazing podcast.

Hilariously Astute Literary Reviews
This is without a doubt my favorite podcast. These guys mix real, literary analysis of character, plot, and greater social themes with hilarious commentary that highlights obvious faux pas you probably should have noticed while reading, but were probably too engrossed to catch. I’ve been holding off on reviewing this show forever, because I don’t have Apple podcasts installed. I have installed it now, just for this review. I’ve listened to every episode of this show. Andrew and Craig know they’re killing it. Intelligent and friendly
Craig & Andrew are clearly good friends with great rapport, which makes their discussions fun to listen to. On top of this they are incredibly adept and summarizing books while also asking very intelligent questions to get at the theme, ideas, and nuances of each story. I often find myself thinking "oh, yeah that IS a good point" for stories I've read. Also I consider them a top resource for books I'm considering but not sure about (ex. The Wheel of Time) Highly recommend.

One podcast to rule them all
This podcast is the best podcast. The hosts are goofy, sweet, smart, and funny. I love hearing their takes on books wether I’ve read them or not. They helped absolve me of my lingering guilt over not being able to finish Infinite Jest, and now I am living my life much more fully. I’ve listened to them take down Ready Player One three times now and it always fills me with glee. But if I’m being honest, they are at their very best when discussing Christmas themed erotica. The Lit Class I Never Took in College
Fun and often laugh-out-loud commentary and critique of books - I tend to listen to episodes only on books I’ve read and wish I could join in on the discussion. Good format with the guys switching places every week with who reads the book. A good alternative to going to a book club where no one’s read the book but you. The production value isn’t always great, such as unequal sound levels between Andrew and Craig at times. I am always adjusting the volume based on who is speaking. I do wish they both would speak more slowly when they’re reading from the book or another text; they race through it and it’s very hard to understand.

My New Best Friend at Work
I'm so glad I found this podcast. I listen to it every day at work when I'm at my desk and I have grown very attached to it. I absolutely love reading and I'm always up for hearing new book recommendations and hearing what other people thought of the books I love. Although it sometimes it feels like they skip over important facts/parts or sometimes just kind of breeze through them, it's gotten a lot better so it doesn't take away from the actual stories. These guys are super entertaining, funny and their voices are great. I found myself laughing out loud at a lot of their takes (their laughs are also extremely contagious) and their guests are really funny as well so it's all around super entertaining. At first, I found myself just browsing through their episodes and only listening to the ones on books I've already read or have always wanted to read and then I have now seriously gone back to the first episodes and started listening to every single one. Please never stop making this podcast!!

I have been listening since about fall 2018 and just love this podcast. I am trying to march through the archives in order but get sucked in to current episodes periodically. Andrew and Craig know a lot about literature, theater and technology but have so much fun goofing on each other and elements of the book, or the author, or whatever topic occurs to one of them, so the episodes are never heavy handed. I am a long time listener and lover of Overdue. Craig and Andrew have such a fun repoire that I enjoy listening even if I’m not very interested in that week’s book. I’ve learned so much about books I haven’t read and saved time in discovering which ones I don’t want to read. My favorite episodes are about books I read as a kid. Revisiting those with fresh eyes and different perspectives makes me so grateful for the time they put in to making this. A must-listen whenever I am asked to recommend. Keep up the good work!

Listen the minute it comes out, every time
I last reviewed Overdue in 2015. I have lived a lot of life with this podcast. I love the bantering, I enjoy the friendship so much and I love hearing about important books that I should know about. I listen as soon as it comes out (a soothing balm, consistently available every early Monday morning) and will often relisten to episodes I particularly like. It is just phenomenal and I recommend you check out their list of "beginner episodes" on their website and start listening! Here is the text of my previous review: I went back and listened to the backlog of every episode. It is a great way to experience an extremely wide range of literature (classics, kids books, nonfiction, YA, poetry, short stories). They give a good summary of each plot and engage with the author history, themes and implications of the work. They have a great relationship with each other and their fan base (Craig’s laugh is totally infectious and the best). Funny and wonderful

Books + absurdity, love it
When I first started listening I was like, ugh a little annoying but since they had covered so many books I loved and read I kept listening. They grew on me. I’m a grown woman with the humor of an adolescent boy who loves books so this completely works for me. I love the tangents, the jokes, the human reactions to words printed on a page. Oh, and the choose-your-own-adventures and holiday smut episodes along with the Twilight series are top tier in my opinion, definitely worth a listen! I also enjoy all the episodes in between and the interesting facts and research for context on every book and author so I get a well-rounded and faceted view of the particular work Overdue has selected for that week. I think Andrew and Craig are smart, witty, rational and compassionate human beings who don’t have to take things/books so seriously because life is serious enough. So basically if you enjoy literature, absurdity, and lightheartedness this podcast is worth it.

I used to love this podcast
I used to love this podcast. I love books and talking about books, and this was a great show for that. But more and more, it feels that every book discussion has to be foamed around today’s politics and leftists ideals. Books don’t need to be read and judged through today’s lens. I read books and learn about other books to escape all that. And to have good books take the back seat to biased political and social conversation on this show is a shame.

Light and Honest
These hosts have a perfect balance of comedy, and honest critiques. I especially like the pulp fiction-y reviews, like Twilight and 50 Shades. They find something good in every book while being honest about the quality of themes and prose. They are very good at bringing context to the works they review. That’s something that I don’t ever research myself when reading. With over 300 episodes, this is my new favorite distraction. And it will last for many, many hours.

FYI: don’t listen to this if you’re looking for a full plot synopsis of the book they’re covering that week. You can expect background on the author and facts relative to when the book was published etc. as well as they’re take on the plot/characters and of course, plenty of so-bad-they’re-good jokes. Thank you guys for doing what you do!

Enjoyable but needs more diversity
Thanks for this podcast. What a great idea!! I enjoy listening. I wish you would have a woman of color on the show if possible to have a more representative voice as a whole. Also more books written by women and specifically women of color. I know “the classics” are mostly written by white men (eye roll). Something to consider. Thanks!!

Over the moon with Overdue ♥️
Completely thrilled with these two guys and their detailed analyses of literature. As a 9th grade English teacher, I miss the days of intelligent conversations of rich texts. These two gentlemen have brought that back to me with relatable conversation and witty prose. So thankful to have found them so my commutes to and from work are something to look forward to now!

Best humor & literary analysis combo!
One of my favorite podcasts to listen to (especially at the gym or on a run, it makes the miles fly by). This podcast has a great mix of humor and literary analysis. I’m especially enjoying the Stop! Homer Time series right now. The first episode I listened to was on Twilight and it was amazing! I’m looking forward to the rest of that series getting the Overdue treatment (and I actually enjoy those books, but I totally agree with the criticisms given on the podcast and elsewhere). I’m always excited for a new Overdue podcast!

Thank you Andrew & Craig
This podcast got me (is getting me) through a rough time in my life and I need to express some gratitude to these guys. They’re naturally funny and insightful, and I respect the sh** out of them. I was a bookseller for about a decade and avid reader who fell off the bandwagon, and this reignited my spark. I hope they keep this going for years to come and I can’t recommend this podcast enough. THANK YOU TO ANDREW & CRAIG!!! Genuinely and eternally grateful.

Good Info, but doesn't encourage me to read
I like reading classics, but I know I can't hit them all in my lifetime - so that's where Andrew and Craig come in. The summaries and info that these guys share about the books are good, but I generally walk away from most of their podcasts with a feeling of "thank god I didn't read that book, it sounds terrible!" I'm sure that some of the books are probably actually pretty enjoyable. But I can't tell if Andrew and Craig actually enjoy reading the books or not. An easy fix would be if they mentioned how much they actually recommend the books, or if they gained anything from reading it, maybe around the end of the podcast.

The podcast that finally got me into listening to podcasts.
I love the one book per episode format and skipping through to refresh my memories of books I’ve already read. I like the “just two guys talking about books” attitude and that they don’t ever try to represent themselves as authorities or experts, but actually do name and quote relevant authorities when talking about books outside of “their lane.” I was apathetic about podcasts for so long, but this one has me searching through back episodes a couple of times a week.

In my top three favorites!
I recently discovered Overdue, thanks to a recommendation from a fellow listener on the Facebook group of another VERY favorite podcast, The History Chicks! I am so ridiculously grateful to have seen that recommendation because this is seriously one of my top three favorites now! I only wish I’d discovered it sooner. Andrew and Craig are so funny, thoughtful, and inviting as they discuss books. Every discussion is approachable and super entertaining, and they have such great chemistry. It’s been wonderful listening to them talk about my favorites, and has also motivated me to tackle some books which have been on my to-read list for a long time, as well as books I’d never heard of before. It’s such an enjoyable podcast, and I really appreciate the effort that Craig and Andrew put into the show, especially since they crank out loads of great content so frequently and consistently! They truly care about representation and inclusivity as well, which is awesome. Thanks so much for this brilliant podcast!

Me when Andrew and Craig release an episode on a book I’ve read: 😃😃😃 Me when Andrew and Craig release an episode on a book I haven’t read: 😃😃😃 I started listening because I had read Jane Eyre, loved it, and stumbled on Overdue’s episode. I’ve been catching up ever since. I love the discussions that are equal parts thoughtful and goofy. This is the book podcast I didn’t know I needed. 100% recommend. P.S. Loved The Count of Monte Cristo episode with Suzannah, one of my favorite books, and she was fabulous! 👏 👏

Also so engaging I love any episode. Have legitimately researched and/or purchased books based on this podcast (I.e.house of leaves). Such a fun and eye-opening podcast. Love it. Yass queens.

Fun and a reading incentive
I found this podcast looking for humor and/or book podcasts, and by luck I found a combo. Andrew and Craig (and sometimes guests) do a survey of “you should have read this book by now” theme without any academic pretensions, which is very refreshing. They make jokes, sift through the canon as well as find new authors and voices, and occasionally choose their own adventures. It’s been a great help to me to get back into a concentrated reading schedule. I also saw them at a podcast conference and they were quite charming.

Unfocussed and inadequately prepared for, these podcasts don't even have the virtue of being brief. If you were in a coffee shop somewhere and found yourself overhearing people this dopey discussing a book, you'd move to a different table.

Like most people who lived in books growing up and have paused that pastime since reaching adulthood, listening to these guys discuss an impressive expanse of books is like reconnecting with an old friend. What’s more, their friendship is completely evident and a joy to hear. No, it’s not always the most serious or analytical, the take Craig and Andrew give is honest, informative, and incredibly entertaining. Keep it up y’all :)

Entertaining and Thoughtful
Overdue is the best book podcast out there. Not only does Overdue introduce me to new books/authors, it fills me in on the ones that I *definitely* should have read by now. Andrew and Craig take great pains to make sure that every episode is full of laughs while also making sure to shine a light on authors, works, and contemporary issues that the books feature. I would absolutely recommend Overdue to any reader who is too lazy for their own good.

I recently started listening to this podcast on a whim, and am so happy I did. I’m the book nerd of most of my group of friends and family and always wondered what other people might feel about a book I was reading or looking for recommendations and peoples different logic for characters in their books. These guys are like my book club I always wanted to join but always felt out of place. They keep it fresh and don’t stick to any one genre. I started with just the ones I wanted to hear about which where books I’d already read, and now I’ve started bing listening to other books I maybe have wanted to but not sure I want to dedicate time on just yet. Thank you!

Truly an interesting podcast
I just found this podcast about a week ago and I find myself coming back to it again and again as I slowly go through all the podcast (I have a few hundred to listen to). I listen to it when I'm cleaning the house, when I'm mowing the lawn, when I'm in the car and it truly is an entertaining and (surprisingly) enlightening podcast. The questions go deeper than one would expect and I find myself coming away thinking further about the questions and how they may apply to other books or even my personal life. Many of these books I have not heard of (granted I'm seventeen so that doesn't mean much) and I tend to be scared of reading a book I've never heard of out of fear that it might be bad. But as I hear them talk about these books, it has given me inspiration to a) go through my own library of unread books, b) read the books they are talking about that has peaked my interest, and c) be more open about the books I choose to read. Overall, a wonderful podcast that is more than just two men discussing a well-written book.

Fun!
This podcast gets me through any lulls in my work day. I only listen to the ones about books I’ve already read and I love seeing the things that Andrew and Craig pick up on that I have been yelling into the void about forever. As an English major, I love analysis of books and these guys keep it accessible and fun. They don’t take themselves too seriously but they’re never dismissive. I do always expect Craig to say “Andrew my man-drew” a la Parks and Recreation. Still waiting on that!

Well done
Nothing too crazy, just insightful and casual modern commentary on a wide range of good and questionable books. The Gone With the Wind episode stands out. Admirably addressing the literary value of the book, as well as its problematic legacy, all the while managing to save the butt jokes that clutter modern social commentary until the very end. I am enjoying the heck out of this show.

10/10, Have and Will Recommended
I’ve been subscribed to OVERDUE for quite the while, but have just recently actively listened to the podcast. This is mostly because I’m a librarian and, while the premise of the show drew me in, I wasn’t sure whether inundating even my commute with more book reviews would be more than I could handle. It isn’t more than I could handle, it’s great, everyone listen to all of these now~ I love the commentary, both for books I’ve already read and for those I haven’t. The sign-off I truly appreciate. These are all amazing and I’ve only listened to the first 50-ish so far. Great job, guys! I’m so glad you’re still active and posting :)

Like Goldilocks (in a good way)?
I first stumbled across this podcast after having read Jemison’s Hugo award winning novel. Though the Fifth Season was highly touted and well read. However, it was not openly reviewed in-perhaps- a ‘newer’ media platform. After a quick search I stumbled across Overdues’ analysis. It was here, in the initial bravery of analysis that I was hooked. Themes were dissected and analyzed, but the framework of this novel was also considered and promoted. I completely agreed! Now to address your balance. After the first podcast I delved into many other novels I’d read or wanted to read. It became clear that Andrew and Craig embrace humility while maintaining professional composure in their reviews. They have managed to straddle the brevity/studious nature of-say-a John Oliver. I know that I’ll be able to gather a certain level of interpretation on a classic as I would expect from a reputable journal while also being entertained. Finally, listening to the honest and palpitating reaction to our most recent presidential election sealed my approval. Andrew and Craig’s incredulity and reaction matched my experience that night of our 2016 presidential election. Thank you for your work. And, yes, I am entertained. P.S. When are we getting some more choose your own adventures? My seven year old daughter and I have just started The Abominable Snowman. R.A. Mongomery is a sly dog!

2018 Relief
Love this podcast! It gives me a more positive break from my daily litany of news/politics and true crime podcasts. I don’t know why I listen to those podcasts because they upset me and depress me so much, but this one never does. The two hosts are a pair of silly literary lovers. I love going through their gigantic list of episodes every day, finding a book I’ve read (or haven’t wanted to spend the time reading but was curious about) and listening to Andrew and Craig’s analysis. Favorite episodes include the ones where they discuss “Bunnicula”, “Beloved”, and“The Fifty Shades Trilogy.” The latter I enjoyed simply because they were so uncomfortable. I’ve never had a desire to waste my time reading 50 Shades, so I’m grateful Andrew and Craig suffered that for me. Also, can I say it’s nice to hear two educated dudes point out that some books don’t have awesome perspectives on women? We need more dudes like this as a society being like “ehhh that’s not great...” when author’s and people in general are crappy towards minorities.

Overdue makes me a better reader
I’m pretty new to Overdue, but I’m so happy to be here. I’ve loved books for as long as I can remember, but discovering this podcast has made me think so much more about the way that I read. I love listening to Andrew and Craig have insightful conversations about things I’ve already read, and they’ve made me excited to read a lot of new things. Honest opinion from a literary cynic
Ok so I’ll start by saying that I did not like podcasts before this one. I did not understand what was so special about listening to people have a conversation, couldn’t I just talk to someone and get the same experience? Well the answer is no, because these two hosts bring such a funny, unique perspective to literature that it’s almost impossible to recreate. Their chemistry and their wit is only matched by their modern, thoughtful analysis of literature.

Overdue works on every level. Each week Craig and Andrew set their understated intellects to demystifying the highly-revered classics with a balance of humor, tact, respect, sincerity, and appropriate skepticism. Love Andrew and Craig. I personally stumbled accross these goons a year and 1/2 ago after finishing a book (which scarcely happened) and wondering what others had thought of the peice. Something influenced me to explore other opinions through the Podcast app (which I haven't used up to this point), and these goons were the first to come up. One thing led to another, and I fell in love with the show. Not only that, Craig and Andrew led me to be hooked on podcasts AND reading (which is my main hobby now). Thanks you guys! Keep doin' you!

Poorly Researched, Shallow Readings
I dug into a couple episodes and I have to say I’m really disappointed. What might seem at first like a decent book podcast with a nice premise quickly devolves into two chuckling nobodies doing their best to pull a giggle out of one another with unfunny quips about books they skimmed. Often, they get simple biographical details completely wrong, to the point where you wonder if they even spent an hour researching the author they feel qualified to talk about. I’m talking second-paragraph-on-the-Wikipedia-page simple. The most disappointing thing is how resistant they are to literary works in general and how frequently they miss the point of what they’ve read. Possibly the most heartbreaking part about it is the way their “hot takes” are delivered - with a sort of nose-upturned ignorance that ultimately belies a real lack of depth on the hosts part, both in their ability to analyze text and in their character. It could be that they sometimes read books in a week that should be taken in over a longer period of time, but to perform a poor reading of a text to fit this premise is a disservice. And it’s not that the idea won’t work. Supercontext did a reading of Gravity’s Rainbow that was stellar. This is just lazy.

A perfectly timed podcast
Sharp wit and dry humor pair nicely with intellectual conversations about books both classic and contemporary. Whether you’re listening to a new perspective on your favorite book, hearing about a book you’ve been meaning to read, or discovering a new novel to add to you to read list, this podcast is sure to keep you entertained. I can’t recommend this podcast enough to book worms and people that don’t have the time to read as many books as they want. Maybe this will rekindle a love of reading for you if it’s been lost in the mundane life of adulthood. Seriously, check out this podcast!

Funny, informative, useful
Love the repartee. An incredibly fun source for reading suggestions. I'm late to the party, but I've enjoyed it so much, I'm going back to the starting line with episode 1. Update: I love your show, but please try to not spoil books that you're not currently discussing. I was listening to Ep. 46: The Old Man and the Sea, and was luckily close to the volume button, because I think you were about to spoil The Lord of the Rings. I am currently reading it, and have amazingly avoided spoilers up to this point for a book series so old and often discussed. I do hope that I didn't hear too much. On to Pygmalion. What I've been doing is listening to those that I've either already read or don't mind a little spoiling. If it's a book that I've not read, but definitely plan to read in the future, I skip the episode. Again. Great show. Guys. Guys. Listening to the Animal Farm episode and nearly got spoiled on Lord of the Rings again. I still love the show, but guys. Please try not to spoil books that are not the focus of the episode.

Wanted this to be fun but it’s just taxing
I wanted this podcast to be fun... it sometimes is. The Ready Player One episode finally broke me. It’s a stupid, fun book but they spend the whole time lecturing us with talking points about why it doesn’t meet their dogma. I assumed a book podcast would be opened minded but these guys just don’t have the capacity to deal with ideas that challenge them. Too many episodes drift into a buzzfeed level of analysis of thought crimes they find & must purge.

I love reading, but I can’t read everything. So I’m glad to count on Andrew and Craig to review some books for me. There are a few books I never would have read if not for them. I love this podcast.
It’s like sitting down with old friends to talk about books. I appreciate that it’s not just new books. Many are books I’ve read—or I’ve been meaning to read—so the conversation feels familiar, friendly, and casual rather than pretentious or overly affected (as many book podcasts can be). Since one of the two hosts usually hasn’t read the book in question, each podcast feels accessible to all listeners, whether or not they are acquainted with the book in question. The hosts are funny without being crass. They are informed without being pedantic. I recommend this podcast to anyone who cares about books even a little. It’s a lot of fun.

My favorite podcast!
Andrew and Craig read the books we should have read by now. Some I have actually read and some are new to me. I always find their discussions interesting and sometimes laugh out loud funny! I love their banter at the beginning of each show. This is by far my favorite podcast and I would recommend it to any book lover.

Bridget Jones - you are thinking way too much
You’re thinking way too much and putting too much spin on it. She’s a late 20 something who is awkward trying to find her way in life. You are men and don’t realize that a lot of women including myself have gone through a lot of this stuff . It’s a tongue in cheek chick flick that we can all relate to. Not for guys...

Fun to hear what some other people thought about books I liked; even if it is from the real-life analogues of Hayes and Shaun’s characters from Hollywood Handbook.

Too Good to Adequately Review
It's not just about the books. I don't even read the books. It's about the magical connection between these two long-time friends, their thoughtful insights on literature and life, and coming out of it feeling like you've learned something meaningful. Also, it's about Andrew saying "same" at the perfect point each episode. This podcast gives me life.

Personal Growth & Efficiency
As an SOP, I will give any book 100 pages. If the author has failed to hook me at that point, I’m out & on to the next book. Andrew & Craig have further streamlined my reading process. By listening the their reviews first, I can eliminate some books that I don’t even want to give 100 pages to (I’m lookin’ at you, Lovecraft, you loon). On the other hand, only these guys could convince me to buy a collection of Feynman lectures. My favorite podcast! Culling and building my personal library in equal measure.

First I listened to the books I had read, then I listened to the ones I wanted to read, now I’m filling in all the gaps. Even if I’ve never heard of a book these two are funny enough to make it worth while.

Great company for book lovers
This podcast is a pleasure to listen to. The hosts' voices are lovely and comforting, and their discussion of books is refreshing to an English major looking for the perspective of a normal reader rather than an intensely analytical professor. They provide great summaries of the books they read with a healthy dose of humor and insight. I greatly appreciate their respect for the readers of the books they examine, and their sensitivity to issues of race, sexuality, and gender in texts from the past. Highly recommend to anyone who loves books and reads a lot of them, as well as to those who wish they had time to read more.

One of my fave discoveries from 2017
This is definitely one of my favorite podcast discoveries of 2017. I spent considerable trying to find a book review podcast that was informative but also entertaining, and Overdue is exactly that. I've even burned through quite a few of the back episodes - which is rare for me even when I find a podcast that I like!

I would like to like it more
This can be the most unnerving podcast. Some episodes are merely giggling and laughing over an hour of a plot summary. Some times they are condescending (who are they to comment on Tim Allen’s behaviour on the set of “The Santa Clause”? Did it make them feel above it all? Why choose a “novelisation” of a movie and then not take it seriously? Choose something else. The intro to the podcast says “besides these are books you should have already read.” The Santa Clause?). Some times they have no clue what they just read. One of them states he typically reads his books in a bar so he can engage to bartender, etc. For example, how do they have an episode over “The Old Man and the Sea” and never mention “grace under pressure” or the code hero? What is the point of putting down Bob Dylan for getting the Nobel? However, at all times they giggle and laugh at each other, the author of the work they are “discussing”, or the work itself. I am always hoping for more, and wish their niche in podcasts in literature wasn’t so small.

Too much giggling for no reason.
Too much giggling. I don't get it. The concept is great, but the hosts seem to want to mock the books rather than analyze them, and there is so much giggling at jokes that just aren't funny. Theven mock their own sponsors. Trim th giggling, shirten the podcast by 20 minutes and you have something.

Like Wishbone for Adults
This is my favorite book podcast! Craig and Andrew have a great rapport, and listening to them feels like listening to friends. I always appreciate the time they take to do research and provide context for the books they read, and I feel like I can trust them to discuss complicated or difficult subjects with sensitivity to their listeners. All in all, a great way to relive books I've enjoyed or get the gist of books I have or haven't been meaning to read -- like Wishbone for adults! (Or teens! #numberonepodcastforteens)

nice
I started listening to Overdue because my mother made me turn it on in the car one day (it’s worth noting that this is how i fell in love with Hamilton as well) and within minutes I was hooked. I work at my local library shelving books which is a mindless, although interesting, job and listening to this podcast makes it one hundred times better. Andrew and Craig are so good at keeping the content interesting, so much so that I can listen to them discuss a book that is of absolutely no interest to me for an hour and never grow bored. They’re hilarious, and often I have to pause the podcast to keep from laughing out loud so the library patrons don’t think I’m crazy. But they also have very interesting conversations when the books get serious, and are just generally good people. I always listen to this podcast when I’m feeling down and Andrew and Craig never fail to make my day better. My all-time favorite podcast, for sure. I’ll talk about how amazing this podcast is to anyone who will listen, and though it’s a running gag on the show, Overdue is definitely the #1 podcast for this teen.

I love these guys and the clever name of the show
Sometimes I’m laughing so hard I can’t breathe. They both have a great sense of humor and very quick witted. Today, I listened to the review of “Where the Red Fern Grows,” and loved it. I read it for the first time in August 2016, but listened to it in class, 1981, 5th grade. My parents didn’t read to me so it felt a bit foreign to have a man read a book in front of all these kids. Many kids left the room crying in the sad parts. I never felt a huge need to read it until my husband said it was required reading for him and that I should try it. So, I did. When Craig talked about Old Dan being dead and how little Ann reacted to it. I couldn’t stop crying. I’ve never cried in their podcast before but Craig did an amazing job of recounting the story.

Great Podcast!
I really enjoy their unpretentious reviews of literature. The hosts research the authors and the history behind the story which always enhances the book that they read. I really enjoyed the episode on The Tenant of Wildfell Hall as it isn’t a novel often discussed, but I thought that the hosts covered it thoroughly. Keep up the great work guys.

Woof
I really wanted to like this podcast. The premise is amazing, and I do appreciate the fact that they try to examine what they read in an unpretentious, laidback style. But they take that vibe so far that I find they often miss critical insight, which is what I’m wanting as a listener. I’m probably a book snob, but I find they’re often bumbling their way through the book synopsis, taking any and every opportunity to be funny. I also find they miss the mark one too many times with their critique, seeming to be too repulsed or overwhelmed to appreciate the fact that authors write about terrible and terrifying events to showcase the darkest parts of our humanity. Please, guys, no more “ew” or “stop” when you’re discussing darker material. It makes you come off as immature people that don’t even want to be bothered with the fact that cruelty, injustice, and depravity exist in our world. The authors aren’t pulling these themes out of their hats to merely disgust you; they’re very calculated devices. Also, when you’re discussing a book with a feminist slant, I think it would be beneficial to include a woman’s voice in the episode. Your episode on “The Handmaid’s Tale” made me cringe because it felt like you were so aware you were out of your depth but you were trying so hard to make up for that fact. The handmaids are not concubines; they’re subjugated to an even lower status! I’m sorry to be such a hater, and a long-winded one at that, but I just wanted more balance between critical insight and amusement, and I’m just not picking up what you’re putting down. Sharpen your critical insight, cut some of the overwrought humor bloat, and I think you’ll have a stellar podcast on your hands.

Fun and smart
Overdue is a unique bookish podcast. First of all it's not just a review of 'I liked this, I didn't like that.' The hosts tell you a little about the author, the time in which the book being discussed was written and how it influenced literature, and summarize the story. They focus on classics and books that were popular or got a lot of attention at some point. They really do their research and have intelligent things to say but they are never dryly academic. The podcasts are always fun. They get silly sometimes but always get quickly back on topic so it adds to, rather than takes away, from the show.

Great running podcast
Happy I found Overdue podcast a few months ago for my workouts! When I run, I don't want to hear about health hacks or the latest running trends - sometimes you just need to listen to a podcast by two friends telling you about the books you probably should've read by now. They post a new episode about once/week and I've just made it through the 2013 podcasts, so I have plenty of catching up for my runs in the future!

This is terrible. Their background research is weak! They even claim to have not reread the book before doing the podcast, and they typically spend the first several minutes annoyingly joking with each other. Great way to ruin some classics!

Love the concept... skip the first five minutes.
Love this concept enough to keep listening, but the first five minutes are consistently two guys, shooting the breeze about random topics (their weekend) in an uninteresting way. Laughter isn't content, and they giggle and giggle so you can easily skip until they get their catch-up small talk out of the way (that would be better done before hitting record) and get to the meat of things. I have a feeling they'll get better with time and polish, but the sound is clear, the concept is good, and their book choices are spot on.

Should have done this a long time ago. I’ve been listening to this Podcast for a little over a year now and it is something I look forward to every week. Stumbled on it after I read the Infinite Jest and spent days looking for a good discussion. Andrew and Craig have delightful banter and work surprisingly hard to give their honest impressions. My personal favorite episodes are the Fifty Shade reviews. The Choose Your Own Adventure bonuses are perfect for road trips. Hope to be able to attend a live show soon.

Just what I was looking for...
This has quickly become one of my favorite podcasts! So many of the books I have read for book club and in my classroom. When I felt that discussions in my personal life fell short, this stepped up! Now, at times, they go off topic and my ADD has a hard time following, but for the most part it's excellent and I would recommend it to any book lover! Great job!

Finally I wrote a review
I found this podcast 6 months ago when I moved by myself to Charlotte. In week I had listened to about 10 episodes and begged my fiancé to listen to it too while we were apart. Now we're back in the same city but this is still our go-to podcast for car trips (be it to the grocery store or Wilmington) and while we cook. Andrew and Craig's infectious laughter and undeniable chemistry keep us hanging on every podcast and even re-listening to episodes. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves that we are not actually friends with them in real life (earlier we talked ourselves down from sending them a polariod of our cat via snail mail). We love the show and are FINALLY patron donors. While our other friends are asking us to listen to podcasts about serial killers, we just say we're trying to be happy.

This is the first review I've ever written for anything, so I apologize if my wording is a bit abnormal. Nope
I'm not sure how to describe this. I tried several episodes, because I was interested in a podcast about books, and was severely disappointed. As near as I can tell, it's two emotionally stunted morons giggling at every mind numbingly stupid joke they can think of...I think they talk about books, but I can't be sure because I couldn't make it through 10 minutes of any one episode. Maybe it gets super interesting, and totally worth it, after they get done guffawing and acting like idiots...but I doubt it. Just when I think they're going to talk about books and make it halfway interesting...one of them makes some nonsensical joke or does a ridiculous voice and the other one breaks into hysterical laughter. It's honestly painful. The fact that it has gotten so many good reviews leaves me utterly confused and makes me weep for humanity. Do yourself a favor and skip this nonsense and just go read more book. (Audiobooks are an excellent substitute for this garbage) Your brain will thank you for it.
