Every place I cry is my son’s favorite band!
He is three and will request “Dinosaurs stomp around” by name even with the weird shrek bit he knows almost every word. Not always child friendly, but always funny. Been listening since the first year, some of my favorites are the fam band. They keep getting better!

These two are musical comedy masters!
I learned about this show from the comment section of YouTube (oddly enough and not dropout) on their play it by ear episode. These two are just amazing. I love how playful they are and absolutely fearless they are at approaching songs with like zero info or prep time, it’s truly an impressive thing to witness. I just started listening but straight out the gate You’ve got some real bangers here…That “citizen public radio” bit had me literally GUFFAWING so loudly that my family stopped me to ask what I was laughing at so hard. 😂 You two really are incredibly talented I’m learning improv myself and I’m still sooo bad, I wish I had 1/5 the talent you two do. I showed your “whimsy on wheels” episode (dropout) to my brother and I caught him singing it at work 😅 Honestly you two should put out an album of some of your super popular songs because people like me would buy it 💯

Better Than The Beatles
I was just listening to a random episode and it struck me, all on my own, with no prompting, that this podcast and the improv songs they make are better than the Beatles. 100%. Just had to share this random thought.

Guest ideas: also I can’t stop laughing
Hello! I have just found this podcast and I am already hooked 😂! I have no idea how getting guests works but I think it would be also if Rhett and Link from good mythical morning were on an episode! I was also thinking if would be awesome if Colleen Ballinger and Erik Stocklin were on the show but then I did a little looking and I saw Colleen has already done an episode (having listened yet like I said I just started listening and by that I mean literally yesterday) anyways I would be cool to have them both on now that Eric has shown his own musical skill in their Relax podcast! Also also I found this podcast after listening to the musical episode of game changers! Keep up the good work!

Top tier, never stop
I can’t explain how much joy this podcast brings me. I listen to it almost daily and have replayed some episodes too many times to count. It’s a perfect blend of brilliant, clever, quick wit and silly, joyful, stories- PLUS beautiful, unexpected harmonies and insanely good instrumental talent. I wish this crew infinite success. In a world of scripted crime shows and know-it-all opinion podcasts, open your mind to some smart musical chaos and get ready to smile.

Astonishing!
I found this podcast through their guest spot on Game-changers. But, podcast doesn’t just change the game it completely outclasses it. The first few minutes are cringeworthy. How this could possibly work? But soon you are along for the ride. Their ability to set up a story and bring it full circle within an hour is incredible and I believe it’s taken them years to hone. If you like this podcast, you’re not going to find anything like it again. Savor it.

Ok, why were you guys keeping this a secret from me?
Incomparable service and staff that are super understanding and loving. I went to get a bagel and soup as a snack and decided to go inside and treat myself. The broccoli cheddar soup was better than any other chain, and frankly, I’ll say it, even local cafes. Also, when I got my bagel it at first wasn’t toasted and I went to the man at the cashier and I said “I’m so sorry to be a bother but can you guys please toast this? I’m sorry.” And he was super understanding and there was no awkward tension about it. Would recommend to all of my friends.

Worth a second listen
I can’t recall the last time I listened to an episode of a podcast more than once — aside from the times when some podcasts re-air an old episode because they’ve run out of time and/or money… which I’ll happily take! But I just have to say that Zach and Jess’s “Spider-Man and MJ in Couple’s Therapy” installment of their Marvel Sing-ematic Universe series — preemptively / misguidedly named “Crack, Crack, Boom!” — was so good, I had to listen to it again. It’s got to be better than at least 3/4 of all WRITTEN musicals made in the last year. I love when they have a guest but, when it’s just the two of them and their masterful accompanists, their chemistry and instincts are so undeniably excellent. It’s true magic.

No Regrets!
I’m going to be honest, the broccoli cheddar soup was so creamy and indulgent that it it put me to sleep, face first into my bread bowl. Granted, it could have also been the fact that I’m lactose and gluten intolerant, but that’s beside the point. No regrets! After a meal like that I’ve never been a happier or more contented lil sleepy baby.

The GENERAL of all podcasts!
This podcast is GENERALLY excellent listening material for all GENERAL purposes. Each week I receive THE DISPATCH with great anticipation. And on that note I have to say— wow! THE GENERAL BY DISPATCH is truly the sound of the summer! That jaunty guitar! The smooth-as-butter harmonies in the prechorus! And finally that iconic chorus that it’s just impossible not to sing along to, as many times as you possibly can, even if you are the only one who knows the song and nobody else cares! Finally and most importantly we have the song’s staunch anti-war messaging! The noble and wise main character of this narrative realizes that the opposing forces are PEOPLE and they have MOMS. And from that day forward the military industrial complex was found dead in a ditch! 5 STARS ONLY!!!

Bread bowl troubles
A Panera tomato soup in a bread bowl has become a staple comfort meal for me. Whether I have a sore throat and need some soup, or am just down for something salty, tomato soup in a bread bowl is always there for me…but at what cost? Now that I have become a tomato soup in a bread bowl girl, I can no long fathom eating just tomato soup on its own. I once went to a Panera for dinner and ordered tomato soup in a bread bowl. After paying I went to get my food, only to be met with a Panera worker telling me they were out of bread bowls 😫. Gutted, I began to try to come to terms with eating tomato soup out of a non edible vessel. When I got the soup, I ate it but we all know it could never be the same. And on top of all of that, they didn’t refund me the 30 cents that getting a bread bowl adds. But alas, my dependence on bread that Panera has strengthened within me can’t break the bond I have with this delicious meal, and for that I give nothing less than five stars.

Great podcast bad apples
This is one of my favorite absolute must listen podcasts every week but I do think it’s weird they make you choose between an apple or more bread as a side. Like, I’ve already got enough bread here but the apple is the same mealy red delicious you’d see in a gas station. It’s 2021, get a Fuji for Pete’s sake. Either way the broccoli cheddar in a bread bowl continues to slap. Five stars.

Panera is honestly just a solid go-to. Like you’ll never meet someone that hates it ya know? It’ll do for any situation - hungry after a 5k? Got picky eaters? Just need one slightly overripe apple? Panera’s got you. And that egg souffle is quite honestly great.

Amazing but they’re always out of baguettes
It’s one of my favorite restaurants to go to but for some reason they’re always out of the little bread that goes on the side. Why? Isn’t bread Panera’s only personality trait? If Panera doesn’t have bread then what kind of cold, empty world do we live in? I mean, I’ll eat an apple instead but it’s just not the same. Still amazing though. Please bring back the Baja Mac n Cheese.

Here’s the thing: being an adult is generally dumb and boring and hard. Very rarely are we given the chance to be silly BUT then something like this podcast exists… this perfect podcast that's an hour a week of shameless, joy-filled, delightful silliness. Why is this free? I give my therapist so much money for her to tell me to loosen up and yet this is free?! That’s bananas. Dang Dang Dang I Know...How Good This Podcast Is
Zach and Jess bring pure and genuine joy, not to mention impression comedic and improvisational chops, to every single episode. Moreover, they bring humanity to every single episode. This is obviously important when you're improvising a whole musical from scratch. But it's doubly impressive how they draw the best quality out of some guests who might not be the best improvisers or singers. They are human to the very core, and it make the comedy that much funnier and each episode much more enjoyable. I don't know how long they'll be willing to do this podcast, but I hope it's forever.

Always brightens my day
The ranch dressing rap was pure genius. Cut a single. Take improv comedy and musical talent and smarts mix in some heavy dair, it turns into a dip you’d put on pizza, carrots or your spouse. Is it cringey sometimes, yes, does it catch you offguard with the skill of the performers, regularly. To write on the fly, sound good and keep it funny is a virtuosic feat of raw talent. It is all fun as hell, you take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have, Off Book.

I didn't necessarily grow up listening to musicals or in theater but this show makes me wish I did. This is my first and probably last review but that's how great this show is.

A comedy/musical dream!
A hysterical musical delight! The improvised songwriting is so impressive, and Jess and Zach are incredibly talented singers and comedically gifted improvisers. The guest stars do a great job keeping up with these legends. I’m already losing track of my favorite songs and I’m only 4 episodes in! Keep up the great work guys!

Consistently Hilarious
Singing talent aside (of which the hosts have in abundance and the guests... well it’s a little hit or miss, but that’s part of the charm) the truly impressive thing is how quick-witted in both rhyming and humor these people are. Laugh out loud funny every episode. The musical tales are made up on the spot and can go to some outrageous places. I don’t particularly gravitate toward “real” scripted musicals so I’m surprised how much I love this show.

Better than the Beatles
So many things I could say, but my biggest take away is that Jessica McKenna is FRIGHTENINGLY talented. Her voice is incredible, and she can switch characters from a young boy, to a woman, to an adolescent, to foreign accents, and each voice is flawless. And she can sing too! How she doesn’t voice like 30 Simpsons characters, I have no idea. Just trust me...listen to every second of this podcast. It’s AMAZING!!! I should also note, Zach is a freaking treasure.

Zach might be Paul F. Tompkins son
Saw ya’ll at Outsidelands and I’m a percentage amount sure that Zach is Paul F. Tompkin’s son. Or, they could be second cousins, that were born a varying time apart, because their mothers were sisters in a large family and one was the first child and another was the 7th child. The age difference could make sense then, because the one sister who was the first child had kids at an early age, but the 7th child waited till she found true love later in life. Sadly her husband died young and she had to raise Zach alone and to fill that hole Zach had to turn to drugs and/or musical improv, which is a far more addictive drug. My point is that Zach and Paul F. Tompkins kind of look a like, but have different noses, mannerisms and mustache amounts. Also, like your podcast.

The Podcast I Never Knew I Needed and Can't Live Without!
Zach and Jess have never failed to make me laugh. I mean that--each episode is absolutely hilarious, there isn't a single bad one. Their improvised songs are sometimes good enough that I'd believe they were planned, but that just shows how truly talented they are. I urge everyone to watch a few episodes of this. I originally saw the recording of their stage show on earwolf and absolutely had to see more of them. Every episode is a gem...please watch this phenomenal podcast

This is the single nerdiest thing I’ve ever seen. And it’s perfect. I always found myself strangely decent at “freestyle singing” and I never knew people used this as a thing. And it’s gorgeous, improv musical theatre is an art form that I want nothing more than for it to grow.

Holy moly, these two are incredible! I’ve never interacted with improv performances before (watched, went to, gave improv some thought beyond reading Tina Fey’s memoir), but one of their shows as a video came up on my YouTube recommendations so I took a chance to watch it and I LOVED it. It’s amazing what they come up with and how both at ease and easygoing they are onstage. I’ve also never liked podcasts much so I’ve literally never opened this app before, but I have a reason to now! I do wish more of their performances were taped visually, as I have partial hearing loss and visuals help me a TON with following the action (hence not listening to podcasts and rather watching videos with subtitles on), but I understand that’s easier said than done and hard to coordinate. But even without visuals the shows are still fantastic. At any rate, congrats on the hard work and great thing going here, and thanks for the laughs!

The Beatles Could Never
This is my favorite thing in the whole world, and this is coming from a very picky 16 year old. I’m so grateful that I exist at the same time as this podcast, every time I listen it feels like Zach and Jess are having the best day of their life, and because I’m listening, I am too. Every single episode is so funny and has so much energy, it’s amazing. Sometimes when I look at a title of an episode before I listen, I couldn’t imagine in my wildest dreams what I’m about to experience and every single time I’m blown away, especially at how smoothly and naturally the show evolves from beginning to end. Y’all keep doing what you’re doing and having the best day of your life. You’re awesome.

I get bored of just plain music. I get bored of talk shows. Off Book makes me laugh and makes my hour long commute go by quickly! These are so goofy and fun. I am amazed by the quick thinking and goofiness that comes out of these people’s minds. Great work! You should definitely have an Instagram for this with short clips of your songs and behind the scene stuff! I would definitely follow!

This is a perfect show
Zach and Jess are amazing singers and improvisers. The musicals are delightful. Sometimes the episodes come together like they were pre-written; other times you can feel the improvisers scrambling to justify some crazy choice they just made - both are so much fun to listen to. The best moments are when Zach or Jess will bump up against some silly idea unrelated to the larger story and just launch into a thematically pointless musical number of pure on-the-spot silliness. Just perfect. Listen to it.

Delightful. Just delightful.
The podcast is beautiful, hilarious, audiorific, and catchy. Improvising a full hour-long musical every week? Impossible! But not for Zach and Jess. Along with Scott on the keys and their guests, they create wonder episode after episode. And I think I'm not alone in saying that I would even be willing to listen to Zach and Jess talk for an hour about anything. Those two are amazing and bring a smile to my face every time.

Impressive Talent, Funny Bits
I get a real kick out of this show, and am always impressed by how they manage to do it on the fly. The only reason it’s not 5 stars is that some of the stories end up tipping from “refreshingly chaotic” to “barely coherent nonsense” even the latter can still be funny. Some of the songs can also get a bit too similar at times, though I feel that’s a small price to pay for the laughs.

Artie Built A Bucket
The are low-key some of the most impressive entertainers around. Now, I would like specifically to talk about the Run to you Bride "When Your Dad's John Cena" piece. My wife has bravely stood by as I listened to this song obsessively. I feel like it is just mainlining some weird truth of the universe. When it gets to "Artie built a bucket right into the couch" it is obviously funny, but the music works so perfectly that I really was left with the most pathetic portrait of a defeated man I've ever been exposed to. This is Willy Loman if his entire character were condensed into a few minutes, its just so goddamn good.

I have been a big fan of improv podcasts for a while, but Off Book is actually the thing that INSPIRED me to get out and start taking improv classes and to get involved with the scene. Super entertaining, but keeps repeating the same ideas (3.5/5)
Off Book is EASILY one of my favorite podcasts. As an instrumentalist and musical theater nerd, I know exactly how hard it is to completely improvise a scene, let alone an entire story along with music. I always enjoy learning about the guests and hearing them play in the space crated by Zach and Jess (and Scott!!!). The places we have gone to over the past few months have been super hilarious and very much enjoyable on my commutes. That all being said, there are some tropes and recurring ideas that Zach and Jess have started falling into (which is super easy when you constantly have to improvise). One of the things I’ve noticed recently is the addition of many MANY different characters. Having lots of characters is not necessarily bad, but only if they can be fleshed out. It feels like a lot of characters are just there for a quick laugh, then add nothing else to the story. One of my favorite techniques of the earlier episodes was having fewer characters that really got explored through the show. More recently, it feels we have so much exposition for so many characters, then the show has to end. It always feels sudden or rushed. Speaking of characters that are there just for a laugh, Zach and Jess keep adding in groups of animals as a character. This is fine once in a while, but it feels very repetitive (especially with their animal voices that can get grating after a few episodes). Musically, Scott is doing a wonderful job on the piano. His style is unique and really captures the mood of whatever is happening “on stage” (on mic?). Zach and Jess, however, rarely deviate from the “easy” notes. I hear a lot of Sol and Mi in the melodies. They studied music, they know the music theory, I would expect a little more variance in the notes. In the end, I love Off Book. I recognize all of the artistic effort that goes into performing each of these episodes. In my experience, I am not a good improviser. However, I feel that as a listener and a fellow performing artist, many of these tropes (themes? Ideas? Motives?) are constantly repeated and do get annoying after a few episodes. I understand wanting to fall back on things you know how to do well, ESPECIALLY in improv. But I could go for a little more variance here and there.

Making MORE difficult the tough task of improv
***updated*** Who doesn't love the teddy-bear golem of the comedy world? Gabrus is SUCH a funny and sweet guy and his improv skills are impressive. Having been a fan of Comedy Bang Bang since the Indie 103.1 days, I've become a fan of dozens of amazing improvisers, Jess McKenna being one of them. I followed her to her HILARIOUS (even if ratings-challenged) show (with Nicole Byer and Alison Rich) Party Over Here. When I heard about this latest podcast-- improv comedy via song?-- I thought- is she and Zach Reino crazy? Well, if they are, lock me in the looney bin along side them. They took the already difficult task of improv and made it MORE difficult by singing the improv. Throw in the fantastic music by Scott Passarella and you have one of the most ambitious and exceptional comedy podcasts out there.

Non-depressing 8 Mile
I've always thought freestyle rapping was a super power. Then I discovered Off Book, where three people are collaboratively improvising a whole musical, building a narrative, and calling back key themes throughout. That's just wizardry -- which is good if you're already a fan of other magically great improv-storyline podcasts like Hello From the Magic Tavern. In fact, do I smell a crossover episode? No, no I don't. That could only happen in another dimension, and how would Jessica and Zach even get there? Be sensible, people.

CURSES CURSES CURSES
This show is insanely good and I can't get enough. I wait anxiously for each new episode and devour it immediately. Zach and Jessica are so insanely talented and I'm shocked how well Scott holds it together and understands the formula of musicals so well to make it feel so complete and well-thought-out. I'm also always so impressed with how well they all support the guest and help them shine through every moment. I laugh out loud at my desk constantly and people stare at me but I don't care. This is increasingly becoming my new favorite podcast. Keep up the amazing work!

Excellent!
This is the kind of stuff I wish I could do with my friends. Captures the joy of improvisation, and how goofy it can be when it gets bad

Favorite Podcast
Having recently moved from LA to the middle of North Carolina, one of the things I've missed the most is being able to go to all the wonderful improv theaters there, specifically musical improv. Thankfully, I just found Off Book, and it's incredible! Zach and Jess are incredibly talented, and the musicals they come up with are absolutely hilarious. It's by far my favorite podcast to listen to.

Fresh and Hilarious
I listen to a lot of comedy podcasts. While I'm often "laughing on the inside" I rarely burst out laughing because after hundreds of episodes few things surprise me anymore. I laughed out loud, hard, many times at this one. Jess McKenna has knocked my socks off on comedy bang bang many times, and she maybe even better here. Zach Reino is also incredibly talented. I expected this to be funny but I honestly didn't think it would be THIS good. Definitely worth a listen.

I Forgot I Was a Bear!
Superior podcast. The concept sounds impossible and possibly annoying, but it is quite funny and not at all annoying.
