Very good advice included in these podcasts. I like the advice to not look at other people and just focus on your past self and where you are now. This guy seems very motivating as well.

New take on fitness is a breath of fresh air
Hey Mike, I like what you said “train now, reflect later.” A big problem for most people who want to get into shape is deciding what’s the best program, diet, this or that. What ends up happening is too much thinking and not enough action. Great tip.

Never Compare Yourself
Whether it's about fitness or anything else in your life, don't compare yourself to others. Others might not have had the challenges you had. This podcast is very inspirational and talks about something I definitely agree with.

Fitness is a mindset
I like the overall message that Mike provide’s, it seems to be uplifting. Mike mentions not comparing yourself to other fitness people and thinking about a way to help you find a way or path for determining the best program for you. Overall, I like his podcast. It provided information about his fitness programs and encourages the listener to be fitness conscience about their health and body.

Protein and body heat?
Hey Mike, I love your show. Thank you for all the detail that you share. I still consider myself a novice in regards to exercise and nutrition, so something caught my ear when I was listening to your show with Cody. You guys were talking about ‘meat sweats’ and body temperature being affected by protein. Can you explain this in detail? What is the correlation? Does it happen to all or only some? Can this explain why my wife is always freezing and I am like a radiator? Thanks for taking the time to respond here or on a future show. I appreciate it! If you are reading this as a review and considering listening to this show…Go for it! I guarantee that you will learn something.

Mike is About Attraction Not Promotion
Mike is the type of person that doesn't need to convince people of anything in order to gain their respect. His wisdom and experience comes through when he tells you how to search within to find the real source of power which will enable you to completely change your body and lifestyle. Mike knows that if you don't go within, then you'll go without. His program obviously has done winders for him and his clients.

An inspiring, challenging & witty podcast
5 reasons I give this podcast 5 stars: 1. It introduces me to new ideas. 2. It makes me reconsider and/or think more deeply about things (fitness and non-fitness related) that I might otherwise have just accept as true without question. 3. Mike is so friggin smart, well-read, and really cares about communicating things well. 4. It strikes a great balance of communicating the rigor necessary to succeed while simplifying things to a point where all this fitness “stuff” feels accessible to everyone. 5. Mike is super witty which helps balance out some of the brainy and scientific stuff that can go over my head at times. Thank you Mike & anyone else on your team who helps make this podcast possible!

Mike i love your podcast and your wealth of knowledge. BUT sometimes i think when you have guests on, you talk to much. let them talk, let them answer questions so that we can hear other perspectives. i find myself feeling awkward a bit during some guest episodes because you just don’t stop talking and the guest can’t get some important points in. so try to listen more and ask questions not take control of the convo. still love you though! hope this is a constructive review.

Good workouts, terrible podcast
I started using BLS and I’m really happy with the results so I figured I’d subscribe to the podcast…which has made me second guess taking the rationales in his book at face value. He puts together good workouts, but his view of what is “science” is pretty subjective and typically revolves around whatever he can get to justify his opinions. Between that and indulging the latest conspiracy theories about masks and horse dewormer - I question the foundations of his books and supplements.

Misogynistic host
I was going to buy the book and decided to listen to a few episodes first - after which I couldn’t stomach giving this guy $. Every episode has some misogynistic comment and most have some thinly veiled political commentary. His interview with two giggly lifting 20 something female super fans - opens with a joke about a 3 way. His answer to how his wife can keep the spark burning in his marriage? “Touch my penis and don’t waste my time with too many chores and errands.” Barf. Dude grow up.

Too bad
Unfortunately, the first episode I chose to listen to led with his thoughts on Covid, after he contracted it. I don’t understand the assertion that the risk of Covid is less than the risk of your daily commute. Last year, 38,000 people died in auto accidents in the US, and 560,000 people have died so far in a little more than a year with Covid. There’s also the fact that if you have Covid, you can give it to my mom or some other frail person who will almost certainly fare much worse than Mike Matthews would.I don’t see how I could trust his fitness or wellness advice.

Best fitness podcast
This is my favorite health and fitness podcast. So many fitness “influencers” align themselves with a diet or exercise camp (keto, paleo, vegan, crossfit, etc..) and sound like religious zealots using their podium to proselytize. Exceptional resource from an O.G. of the fitness industry
If you’ve never been exposed to Mike’s content then you must be new to the game because he has been cranking out quality evidence-based content for years. I’ve followed his bigger leaner stronger and beyond bigger leaner stronger programs for years and have made steady consistent gains. His style is to the point with zero fluff as he stands toe to toe with some of the bigger names in the evidence-based fitness scene. I always enjoy his perspectives that sometimes challenge conventional wisdom and thinking. Based on his physique, he also clearly walks the talk. His supplement company Legion Athletics provides top shelf products and formulas that are all research validated and at a very hard to beat price point. If you’ve been spinning your wheels in your training and/or in the kitchen I highly suggest binge reading a few of his ebooks and subscribe to his podcast. It’s well worth the time and money investment.

The last fitness podcast you’ll need
Whenever I have questions about the next new supplement, diet, or exercise that the fitness industry is pumping this podcast has science based answers for me. Just listening to the new episodes while I’m driving or running has been a fantastic way of passively becoming educated in all things fitness. Lastly, the conversations that are off the topic of fitness are without a doubt my favorite part. If I’m short on time that’s all I will listen to.

Super informative podcast.
I could listen to Mike talk all day. I mean that in the least creepy way possible but i just love the way he enunciates words. But on a more serious note, i have learned so much from his podcast. I love how he goes into great detail but makes it easy to understand as well. I love learning about all the science that comes with fitness but I’ve only been really into workout out consistently for 3 years so I’m still pretty new compared to what others know. Mike does a great job of breaking everything down in a way that is easy to digest so that we get the most out of the information given.

Crazy informative!
I absolutely loved the Thinner Leaner Stronger book - it is in fact helping me to do just that. The podcast is jammed with amazing knowledge and information as Matthew packs SO much into it - I often will listen to an episode a couple of times. My only complaint (totally biased and selfish) is that I wish he would have more interviews with people who have gone through his program (also at various stages) and how they are doing it - specifically women so we can stay motivated and inspired. But I’m SO grateful for all he does and LOVED the episode with his Mom SO much - I just wanted more of that. Like more about what she’s eating, her cheats, her go-to’s, the workout plan she does, how long it takes - basically everything. LOL Different ages and sizes and challenges please. Keep doing what you do! I’m getting fit over here thanks to you! -xo-

Science-backed but practical
As a scientist, I especially appreciate the literature reviews in every episode, looking at both the broad strokes as well as the details of each study. Does a good job of delving into nitty-gritties of nutrition, health, and fitness without losing sight of the simple, practical, overarching principles. Intros could be a bit shorter, but that’s my only criticism!

I've read four of Mike's books. I love the content and conversational writing within them. I pretty much live and die by a lot of his information and when I have a fitness question, he's the guy I go to. Mike delivers!
I have been recently getting into PODCASTS. I started off with news, traveling to fitness podcasts. Being honest, I found Mike & Legion through another Podcast: MindPump. However a small praise compared to other podcast, is that Mike deliver concrete and straight-to-the-point information. The topics are always on track. I enjoy listening while working out, driving, gaming or doing house chorus. I was glad finding Mike’s Podcast as I don’t have youtube subscription to play music/podcast w/o having the video open. (Fyi, Mike has a youtube in case you didn’t know). I found myself fascinated with things I forgot or questioned about that are answered in his Podcast. The Podcast is clear of sound and background music is not overwhelming. I highly recommend this Podcast along with Legion’s products!

Like a breath of fresh air
With so much different information out there and companies and execs just trying to make a quick buck, finding Mike Matthews, Legion, and the Muscle for Life podcast has been a game changer for me. I’ve lifted in the past but never took the journey seriously. When I got back into it, I was flooded with so much conflicting information on everything. I kept on ignoring the spam emails from MFL until I finally decided to open it and check it out. I was hooked from then on out. He spoke from evidence based practices and explains everything in layman’s terms. He has a passion for fitness, overall well being and family and those 3 things I strongly believe in. I’ve been following Mike and Legion for about a year now and I’m a fan for Life.

Read BLS five years ago and changed my life. Rather than resting on his laurels, Mike Matthews continues to explore various health and fitness contents. Love the collaboration with other members of the fitness community. Happier, healthier, better looking me
It’s hard to tell these days the difference between what is real and fake. With so many fads and gimmicks it can be difficult to know what advice to take when it comes to living a healthy life style. Even amongst all the fluff Mike Matthews stands out. His advice is research, tested, and documented by professionals across the United States and the rest of the world. His program is the only one to follow and his podcast is great for picking up helpful tips. Do the right thing and subscribe if you’re ready to see some change in your life. Mike always backs his information off of cold hard facts supported by scientific search. That’s why I’ve listened to and read his material for a long time. Not only do you get a better you but you also get a better life. Lifetime supporter here.

True knowledge in a world of swipe workouts
Anymore, most information related to fitness and nutrition comes in the form of a “swipe workout” or based on false truths to get likes and follows. For a novice like me, it’s discouraging when most information is a scam or a publicity stunt. But with Legion and Mike, I have always trusted the information, insights, and advice as it’s always presented well-researched and tested. Our home is a legion athletics household. We’ve worked with their coaches, own over half a dozen of Mike’s publications, and trust only legion supplements to support our goals. This podcast is another of Mike’s quality and trustworthy resources for anyone looking to advance in reaching their goals - novice or expert.

Where was Mike and his advice when I was 20?!
YEARS of following ‘bro fitness’ fads had left me completely … average in appearance and fitness level. My only regret after finding Mike and his Legion fitness company is that they weren’t around when I was 20. Since following his advice I’ve finally seen the results I had always been hoping for (and perhaps given up on ever achieving). But you don’t have to take MY word for it. Ask my wife! ;)

Balance
I have always struggled with the balance between gaining muscle and fat, and then losing that exact same muscle (and fat) during the cutting process. Back and forth, up and down, like a drunken & indecisive yo-yo. Following Mike’s straightforward and to the point diet and workout protocol, over the last 2 years, I’ve been able to jump up to 195lbs (from 173) while keeping my body fat in single digits. Tracking my found following his formulas and his reverse dieting technique made all the difference!

Mike Speaks the words of wisdom
I learned of Mike's existance through my sister Julia's recommendation to read his book, "Bigger Leaner, and Stronger." After reading, annotation, and taking notes I have to say I fell in love with the book and apply its teachings in the GYM everyday. Once I caught wind that Mike had a podcast I jumped on the idea and subscribed as soon as I could. If I have the time I'll listen to what he has to say and apply his teachings for future workouts I have.

I have come to trust your publications and Legion products and the content you consistently offer in emails and Instagram. I found you through MindPump podcast during the begging of this COVID-19 epidemic. I liked what I heard, started to research your books and ultimately purchased four to date. Legion Athletics has become a trusted source of protein supplements and joint motility, along with an awesome quality women’s multi vitamin. Helpful, informed, and easy to understand
Finding good health and fitness information is ridiculously difficult when the Internet is full of conflicting views, fake information, and “pay to play” insights. Not with Mike and Legion. I read his book, Thinner Leaner Stronger, and the rest is history—his writing and this podcast have helped me lose fat and gain muscle consistently, helped me change my lifestyle, and restored my trust in the weight loss process. This podcast breaks everything down in ways that are easy to understand, whether you’ve been lifting for decades or just starting out like me. Mike backs up his thoughts with scientific studies and I’ve seen the results to support it. I love that these episodes cover topics across the fitness spectrum—whether you’re looking for form guidance, diet tips, or something else, you’ll probably find it here!

Great information!
I begrudgingly purchased Mr. Matthews’s book Bigger, Leaner, Stronger, thinking it was just another cookie cutter fitness book. However, the book taught me that the traditional weightlifting routines, gauging your macros properly, and other important information does truly produce results. I have in 16 weeks, lost twenty pounds and at 46 am almost back to the form of my youth. In addition, Mike’s podcasts offer a wealth of vital and usable information to assist you in becoming a better lifter, dieter, and person. I especially love his podcasts when they involve the great Mark Rippetoe!

Concise and Well-Researched
Mike has a way of distilling hard to swallow (or frankly boring) information about exercise science. I appreciate that he doesn’t cling to any one annoying trend (be it fasting, keto, etc) and is always quick to point out the science or lack of science for whatever is popular at the moment. I admit that working out isn’t really a hobby of mine, but more something I feel like I “should do”. Mikes podcast, books, and product line are truly the only motivation that keeps me staging healthy. Keep it up, dude!

Mike took fitness, which can be confusing and boring and made it entertaining, simple and effective. He is highly knowledgeable but what puts Mike a class above the rest, is the fact he seeks the information he doesn’t know from credible studies and top interviews. Mike shoulhow to get the body you want without wasting years trying everything first
Ladies and gentlemen, mike breaks it down without the costly sidebars or wasted time trying every routine in the books. So here’s my testimony me and my love had a baby and gained lots and lots of baby weight. Okay it wasn’t just baby weight we let ourselves go big time. I got to 200 lbs and on my 5.2 feet frame that’s a lot. I started a very expensive boot camp thinking that was the way . Adam started bigger leaner stronger. After a year, I lost 10 ish lbs and hated going everyday to this place that I needed to eat my frustration. Adam got bigger leaner and stronger hence the title of the book huh. In April of last year I came up to him and asked for his secrets and training he actually threw the book at me. Yes mike’s book. I followed the program. I was scared of the gym so he went with me the first week and showed me the moves. After a few weeks , I saw results and I was hooked. My body looks better than before I had a baby. Also for Christmas he got me the Thinner leaner stronger and my butt has never looked so good. Love the program. Also Mike we take all your recommendations seriously even the sex 2-3 times a week. Love that one and with all his sexy muscles , it’s the best sage advice. Kinda hard (no pun intended) some weeks though because sometimes we are so sore . I love how muscles look on my body now. I love how clothes fit me. I am the strength behind that and the progressive journey has been so much more empowering than I would have ever imagined so thank you!

Insanely Informative and Awesome Show
I love the show. The information talked about cuts through the gimmicks in the fitness industry, and it simplifies what actually needs to be done when it comes to health and fitness. I would love to have an episode on injury recoveries like muscle pulls or strains and how to treat and prevent them in the future. Also, as a vegetarian I would love to listen to an episode on food myths. Like what are some foods that people are told are healthy but actually aren’t. I’m not so some “plant based meats” are as healthy as advertised.

The Perfect Advice
I’ve been buying Legion products such as the preworkout and protein powder for almost 2 years now. I’ve seen emails from Mike for a while now as well. Starting this year, I was in my brother’s room and noticed a book named “Bigger Leaner Stronger: The Simple Science of Building the Ultimate Male Body” and was immediately drawn to it. A majority of the things I read were things I 100% agree with when it comes to fitness and overall health. It was quite the coincidence that the author of the book ended up being the same person I purchased Legion products from. I was very happy to learn I was doing the right things for almost a year. I’ve gone through quite the change since March 2020, losing quite a bit of body fat and my overall habits were also changed. While I was being reminded of the things I was already doing, I learned some new things as well, including the idea of deloading the weight/intensity in the gym during the year and periodically taking a break from the gym for 5-7 days during the year. I liked the book so much that I shared it on my Instagram and recommended it to all my friends who are potentially interested in going through their own transformations. I’ve just recently come across Mike’s podcast and I can say my opinion on him has not changed. He still gives really good advice, except this time I can hear him speak. One great podcast I listened to by Mike was the subject regarding habits. I’m a fan of some fitness people on YouTube, but what I feel most lack is the mental aspect regarding fitness/health. Mike discusses this in his book and his podcast. I believe he gives really got advice regarding habits and how important they are to an individual’s success. Overall, I highly recommend both Mike’s books and his podcast. There is fantastic information there and I think anyone can learn quite a bit, even if it’s just one or two things.

Motivation Mondays
Fantastic! 24/7 fitness forgiveness available. So many people, myself included, give up completely on a New Year’s resolution because of just one failure, one cigarette, one whole pizza, one missed workout. Who knew? Many times we’ve been told, “If you fall off the horse, the best thing is to get right back on that horse.” Who wants to TRY to get back on an angry horse? Health is not an angry horse. Health is you. Health is us. Health is our own body. Our body selfishly wants us to be healthy because it makes him feel good. Health/Fitness is always available. A brand new start is always there waiting. All is forgiven. A fitness routine will welcome us back with open arms. We don’t have to go to the back of the line or start from scratch. 53 years ago, having smoked for many years, I thought that it was too late to quit. The damage had already been done. I quit because I was assured that the moment that I quit, my own body would begin to repair itself. This Monday Motivator struck me similarly. My healthy lifestyle had already paid dividends and those dividends would begin to accumulate again the moment that I resumed my healthy habits. Thanks for the info and the invite. I accept.

Mike the Researcher
I find Mike M really digs into researched items. He doesn’t just say something without backing it up. He supports his view very well. Great information in my opinion. At points it can be too technical.

Premier Nutrition and Exercise Content
I spent no less than 10 years struggling to maintain a healthy weight. I could always lose the weight, but then it would come right back. It was a lack of true nutrition understanding on my part. Mike Matthews makes that information accessible and easy to understand in his podcasts. It really has made a significant difference in my life and understanding how to eat properly.

Approachable fitness
I’ve been listening to Mike’s podcast and using his products for a little over a year now. What I’ve appreciated most, over other folks in this space, is how applicable his information has been. I feel like I’m being armed with all of the appropriate information I need to dial my own level of success. Life happens, pandemics happen, but there’s room in Mike’s advice to do what you can as you can to still keep things from getting out of control. Likewise if you want to get from point A to point B quickly and safely that information is available too.

Mike's Methods really work!
I've been following Mike for over a year, but most recently put his cutting routine and advice into practice. In BLS phase 1, I've lost 10 pounds and gone from 18% to 14% body fat. And have increased my lifts across the board. This guy knows what he's doing! Podcasts are great, and very informative, with practical advice that works. Highly recommend!!

- Alyssa Olenick on Using “Hybrid Training” to Maximize Your FitnessWhat is hybrid training? Well, that's exactly what you will learn about in this podcast interview with Dr. Alyssa Olenick. At its core, hybrid training (also known as concurrent training in the scientific literature) is a fusion of strength and cardiovascular training. Many people feel these types of training are at odds, but in this episode, you’re going to learn how hybrid training is not only possible, but can be complimenting, helping you excel in both strength and endurance. In case you’re not familiar with Alyssa, she’s an Exercise Physiologist, sports nutritionist, weight lifter, and ultra runner. And with her strong academic background, she’s dedicated herself to both the practical and theoretical sides of fitness, helping thousands of clients crush both their lifting goals and their race finish lines. Her unique perspective combines the rigors of scientific research with practical, hands-on coaching experience. In chat, Alyssa and I discuss . . . The concept of hybrid training, blending strength and endurance training, and why heavy lifting isn’t enough and doesn’t “count” as cardio Misconceptions surrounding the interference effect, debunking the “cardio kills gains” myth and exploring how evidence-based research supports the integration of cardio into strength training routines for enhanced results Differentiating the benefits of strength training and cardiovascular exercise, explaining why both are essential for a balanced, effective training regimen The correlation between cardiovascular health and quality of life, and how a developed aerobic system can amplify strength training and overall physical performance How to turn cardio “exercise” into a training system with progression Practical advice on combining cardiovascular and resistance training for optimal results, including tips on protein intake, carb periodization, and effective fatigue management Personal experiences and insights into maintaining muscle and losing fat through cardio, while balancing the intensity of strength training And more . . . If you're intrigued by the idea of becoming both stronger and fitter simultaneously, or if you're simply looking for an innovative approach to mix up your current fitness program, then this podcast is for you. - Muscle for Life with Mike Matthews May 22 · 35m The Truth About Testosterone Boosters (Are They Worth the Hype?)The allure of testosterone booster supplements is obvious. They’re a perennially popular topic because the promises are highly enticing, from giving you a surge of energy, to enhancing muscle growth, speeding up fat loss, and even aiding in quicker recovery post-workout. People also claim these supplements improve your sleep, uplift your mood, and even boost your sex drive. The purported benefits are so vast, these products often seem like a bargain, leading many to believe that even if they delivered just half of what's promised, it would still be worth the investment. So, I thought it was high time to record an updated episode on the current state of testosterone boosters. In this episode, we're going to explore some of the most popular supplements currently available in the market that are reputed to increase testosterone levels. - Dr. Bill Campbell on Effective Ways to Change Up Your TrainingWill changing up your workouts result in better muscle gains? Or is it better to keep your training program static and consistent, so you’re doing the same lifts and exercises week after week, month after month? In other words, does introducing novelty improve hypertrophy or does consistency trump all else? Many people are on the hunt for the “best,” most-scientifically-optimized program and as a result, constantly change their training regimen for the next best thing. This is called program hopping, and it’s generally something you want to avoid. On the one hand, tweaking training variables can be a great way to keep things fresh and interesting so you enjoy your workouts. On the other hand, too much variability can make it hard to ensure you’re making progress. In this podcast, I chat with scientist and friend Dr. Bill Campbell about changing up your training program. Specifically, we cover a recent study that looked at resistance training variables and how tweaking them affects rate of muscle gain compared to keeping workouts static. And then we dive into practical advice for implementing both consistency and variability in your training. In case you’re not familiar with Dr. Campbell, he’s a repeat guest on the podcast, and a professor of Exercise Science and the Director of the Performance & Physique Enhancement Laboratory at the University of South Florida, who’s also published more than 150 scientific papers. He also has a research review in which he examines scientific papers and breaks them down into simple, actionable takeaways. So, if you want to learn whether changing up your workouts will enhance or worsen your progress, what the latest science says on the matter, and how to do it correctly, listen to this episode! - Muscle for Life with Mike Matthews May 8 · 32m The 5 Best Health Metrics to Track For a Healthier LifeYou can find countless ways to track your health, especially if you buy any of the latest gizmos and gadgets in the fitness wearables space. But most health markers aren’t worth keeping an eye on. With the “quantified self” movement on the rise in recent years, fitness wearable manufacturers and marketers will attempt to sell you on the benefits of all the health metrics you can track. The truth is many health markers simply don’t matter. And some of these health indicators can even be actively misleading, as in the case of recovery scores produced by different fitness wearables, usually based primarily on heart rate variability. In this podcast, I share 5 health markers that will allow you to monitor your health and ensure you're in good shape. - Research Review: Drop Sets, Sumo vs. Conventional Deadlift, & Mindset and FatigueCan drop sets help you gain muscle and strength? Is the sumo deadlift “cheating” compared to conventional deadlifts? Is willpower limited and how do your beliefs affect it? I’m discussing the latest scientific studies on these questions. Listen now to dive into the research! This podcast is another installment in my Research Review series of episodes, where I give you concise and practical takeaways from studies that I think are interesting and that can help us gain muscle and strength faster, lose fat faster, perform better athletically, feel better, live longer, or get and stay healthier. There is a ton of scientific research that gets published every year, and even if you narrow your focus to fitness research, it would still take several lifetimes to unravel the hairball of studies on nutrition, training, supplementation, and related fields. That's why my team and I put a lot of time into reviewing, dissecting, and describing scientific studies in articles, podcasts, and books. Oh and if you like this type of episode, let me know. - Menno Henselmans on Reasons to Stop Taking Diet BreaksDiet breaks have become more popular in the evidence-based community over the past few years. The strategy is purported not just to improve your results during a cut, but actually make dieting easier. But is the science so clear-cut? In this interview, Menno Henselmans and I discuss the scientific literature on diet breaks, including a new study in which he was involved. Menno has been on my podcast many times, but in case you’re not familiar with him, he’s a former business consultant turned international public speaker, educator, writer, published scientist, and physique coach who’s passionate about helping serious athletes attain their ideal physiques. In this interview, Menno and I chat about . . . Why diet breaks have become so popular in the evidence-based space in recent years How his new diet break study was designed and conducted and its results The reasons why adding maintenance periods to a cut probably won’t “trick” your body and mitigate the negative side effects of a calorie deficit Why diet breaks are probably a waste of time, just make your diets take longer, and what you should do instead Protein-sparing modified fasts and when they’re useful and who might benefit from them How to add in extremely low-calorie days to a cut (the opposite of refeeds) and why you might want to Why very short bulks don’t work (but mini-cuts do) And more . . .
