One of the Best Storytellers!!!
I love a good story and Mr. Ballen is one of the best storytellers!! I first found him on YouTube and was ecstatic to learn he was launching a podcast. While his stories center on the “strange, dark, and mysterious”, he is respectful, reserved, and sticks to the facts. Mr. Ballen fades into the background and the story is front and center. No extra commentary, spin, or fluff here. Just good, clean, and suspenseful storytelling. Thanks Mr. Ballen! Keep up the good work!

I love Mr Ballen’s YouTube channel and his podcast!! He has an amazing way of keeping you captivated while telling a story but that’s not all. A few weeks ago he did a story about a murder that happened in Yakima, Wa and he kept mispronouncing Yakima. So some people commented the correct way to pronounce it and Mr Ballen went back and fixed his pronunciation throughout the entire story!!! Mr Ballen really cares that EVERYONE in his audience is happy with the stories he tells. Keep up the great work! Your YouTube channel and podcast makes my daily chores and errands a lot more fun!

Best Story Teller!!
This is my new favorite podcast!! I enjoyed watching his videos on TikTok but the podcast is even better!! He tells these stories in a way that makes you go back in time like you are there with every little detail included! Just when I think I have the killers figured out there is a plot twist! I can’t get enough!!

I’ve seen Mr. Ballen’s youtube account before and always thought it was too “click-baity” to listen to. However, after being told by friends that he’s really interesting, I gave him a shot. Now my favorite podcast.

enjoying so far!
stopped listening to gen why fianlly, tired of their police bashing and complete bias of every crime they talk about. crime junkie-tired of britt pretending she is surprised every five seconds and now they are adding bleeped out cuss words, guess to be more "grown up". this dude just tells the story and gives u the necessary details without being overly graphic, or perverse. also so far leaves his opinions and biases out of it nd just tells the tale. keep it up and God bless! I can see the hand gestures as though I’m still watching videos!
If you’re a long time follower of the YouTube channel, you will know that Mr. Ballen uses the exact same hand gestures for each little segment of his videos. It’s not planned, you can tell he is just a hand talker, but I love it. I do them with John as he is introducing the videos. If you like the YouTube channel, you will love this, it’s exactly the same, just more descriptive. I can still to my hand gesturing and everything!

The ONE AND ONLY problem with Mr Ballen’s material is that once you become addicted to submitting the like/review button to all kinds of heinous treatment and you binge all of his material… you continually are “jonesing” for the next released podcast and or video! Gratuitous and full of heavy-handed conjecture
I’m not a fan of Mr. Ballen’s treatment of true crime. This podcast is for those looking to be shocked and entertained by traumas and violence experienced by others. The ‘story-telling format’ is not only presumptuous and cringey, but straight up clunky and chock full of unnecessary ‘colorful’ details which is, no doubt, an attempt to personify the victim, but comes off as baseless, faux-intimacy seeking to fully immerse the listener in other people’s trauma. Mr. Ballen adds nothing to the genre of true crime and ‘strange, dark and mysterious’ except ignorant voyeurism.

My biggest pet peeve of true crime books/podcasts is that they start with the end and then go back and tell the story either backwards or start at the beginning. Mr. Ballen leaves enough unknown for the listener to be on the edge of their seat! I’m glad to hear he keeps the mystery in the mystery. I absolutely LOVE this podcast!

My husband and I love the podcast, we have been listening everyday for a couple weeks now listening to older episodes on the days new episodes aren’t posted. We live in Washington state and there are a ton of stories based out of Washington so that’s cool too. Mondays episode based out of Yakima was the best. You said Yakima like it was a Japanese city or something and we honestly didn’t know what city you were trying to say until we passed a sign driving that said exit towards Yakima and we started laughing realizing what you were trying to say. Just thought I’d share it gave us a good giggle every time you said it after that. I recommend your podcast to anyone that loves true crime!

I came across him while I was browsing for something new to listen to so I decided to give him a listen. Omg!! I was immediately hooked. I listened to every episode in a day and a half. Now I impatiently wait for the new episodes to drop on Monday’s and Thursday’s! In the meantime, I’m on YouTube watching and listening to all of his older content. Great storyteller: entertaining, interesting and articulate!
Perusing through my Facebook page getting bored with everybody’s posts about eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch, I snapped over to my video section for a moment to see if there was anything interesting to view. After going through a few stories that were mildly entertaining or having interesting combinations such as murder while putting on make up, I stumbled across Mr. Ballin in a backward hat and a casual flannel gently moving his arms out and supination, to say. “that’s all we do,”casually and comfortably. The subjects lured me in, and I got hooked ! Not always disturbing murders, sometimes historical stories that intrigue curious minds, information about stories I knew but in greater detail, and delivered in a friendly manner that made me feel like I had been welcoming into somebody’s living room to sit and have a chat. An added bonus, a navy seal! I respect and honor all who serve our country, being a daughter of a veteran, daughter-in-law of a veteran niece to a veteran and now mother-in-law to a US Marine veteran as well, I appreciate, John, your service. Keep doing what you’re doing , we love you!

Storytelling Master
Mr Ballen is by far the best storyteller around. He has a captivating way of using his voice to bring emotion to the story that makes you hang on every word. I’ve listened to so much of his content that when an episode I’ve heard already comes on I just listen to it again. My only wish is that he could pump out new content at a faster pace.

What’s not to love?!
I love his stories, I love his YouTube channel, I love his love-hate relationship with the like button and, now, the 5-Star review button, and now I love his podcasts. I hesitated to listen to podcasts until Mr. Ballen started one and now I listen to others when he doesn’t have anything going on. I don’t know how to explain the way his storytelling makes me feel: homey, if my home was a haunted cabin in the middle of the woods where Hansel and Gretel met their end; happy, because it gradually leads up to an ending I cannot anticipate. The only thing I miss is his flannel shirts. Thank you, Mr. Ballen.

The best storyteller!
I never listened to storytellers until I came across Mr. Ballin the way he tells the story is amazing! He makes me feel like I am the person he’s telling the story about your so immersed in the story, as if you are reading a book. My heart rate increases while I am listening to his podcast or YouTube videos cause I am so immersed into the story! Good, but a lot of mansplaining
I have enjoyed this podcast very much except for how he mansplains the most basic of things. I get the need to ensure your listeners understand but when you have to explain how a corded phone works (plugged into a wall) or how three people get into a car and then proceed to say how one person got into the driver seat, one in the passenger seat and one in the back seat (those seating arrangements are presumed) or why people try to sit in the inside or outside of an airplane aisle (because no one likes sitting between two people)…it is a bit too much. Explain concepts and terminology but if a listener doesn’t know something basic then that is what the internet is for. The over explaining really takes away from how good this podcast could be.

If you are looking for some one to tell you true stories about the dark and mysterious, you’ve arrived. MrBallen has a soothing voice and a good way of keeping you entertained until the end. Even if you’ve heard the story before somewhere else 😉. Even his mini commercial segments are worth listening to instead of getting annoyed. I usually fast forward through them, but I prefer to laugh through his! Hope you listen to the latest one then listen to his stuff from the beginning to present! Enjoy! 🤓

THIS MAN HAS LORE!
I love this podcast. Mr.Ballen Reminds me of my home on the North Shore of Massachusetts. He is truly a gift of an influencer! I came over from youtube, and honestly, you can envision all his incredulous facial expressions in the way he tells his stories. This gentleman is my all time favorite storytellers because he doesn’t just focus on ONE thing. He tells ghost stories, true crime, historical events— everything. There is something for everyone one with Mr.Ballen. If you have ADHD, and like variety Definitely give this man a shot. This is the first time I’ve ever listened to a podcast in my life, and it’s worth it. I love judging really stupid criminals while cleaning, and working on my stuff. Thank you Sir! I was fortunate enough to find Mr B when he only had about 1500 followers. My wife and I were instantly hooked. We miss the missing 411 stories. If you ever run out of stores that would be a good one you could say what was your reason for your decision to not tell them anymore. Mr. Ballin knows how to tell a story. He paints an intricate picture that pulls the listener in. As an educator, one thing I like that he does, is give definitions to words people may not know. And he does an excellent job with that too. I recommend him to all my friends And people I may meet.

(Relatively) short and sweet
True crime podcasts have become such big productions with a lot of filler garbage and fluff that I find boring… I found Mrballen on Facebook, initially, and kept getting stuck watching the productions. I remember thinking, ‘I wish this were a podcast’. Great story telling and great voice for narration…Even the less exciting ones are a good listen because he’s so good at telling a story. This is the first podcast ever to keep my attention. I also appreciate the relatively short duration. Thanks for the entertainment!

Great stories you won't hear anywhere else
I can't wait for every Monday and Thursday because that's when new episodes of this podcast are released. I love this show. Extremely entertaining true crime stories and a great host. Every episode has been great. I love that I have not heard these stories before. With so many other true crime podcasts I've already heard their stories. Mr. Ballen is a gifted story teller and this podcast won't disappoint. He is also a military hero in real life and I thank him for the sacrifices he's made for our country.

It’s mr ballen in podcast form. No more explanation. But I listen to A LOT of podcasts and this has got to be the only one nowadays with ads I can listen to. Like, I don’t mind them at all and even find them entertaining. Other podcasts, it’s gotten so bad, I get this panic and rip out my ear buds or quickly grab my phone to fast foreword before I scream. Has changed
I’ve been watching the YouTube videos for a long time and there are hardly ever any scary, suspenseful, spooky stories anymore. It’s all dark, gore, murder, blood & guts. I want more scary stories in the woods, ghost stories, etc. I haven’t watched/listened near as much the last couple months due to this.

Great Storytelling
I found Mr. Ballen on YouTube about a year ago, and I fell in love with his channel. While he does talk about the strange, dark, and mysterious, I think he gives a different angle on true crime through the way he tells their stories. I feel like I’ve learned a lot about the world, and what to look out for to keep myself safe. But it’s also educational, like the Sarin gas incident in Tokyo that I knew nothing about, a significant historical crime in Tokyo. Keep on that grind Mr. Ballen and thank you.

Big Fan of Mr. B!
Great podcast for passing the time and always with a unique story! If you follow on YouTube you may hear a repeat from there occasionally but they are nicely upgraded audio wise. I do have to ask what the 5 Star Review Button did to him though. There seems to be some deep-seated animosity there. Hopefully with some mediation, and a few weekend paintball sessions, they be able to will hash out their issues. Enjoy!

My favorite new podcast
As a horror and true crime fan, I love that we get variety in each episode. It’s not always about true crime murders but also sometimes about weird unexplained events. He jumps right into the story and always makes each tale the right length. Start with the “Bells Canyon” episode and you’ll be hooked!

These stories are all so fascinating! I heard of this pod bc my other fave “So bad it’s good” with Ryan Bailey. His regular guest Sophie Ross mentioned it was her fave and boy am I glad she did! I really enjoyed this pod in the past, but after episode 52, I’m done. Is it really necessary to sexualize a murder victim? Is it really necessary to describe a sexual assault and murder in such graphic detail? True crime can be done tastefully and this IS NOT IT. This episode was clearly written by someone who enjoys violence against women way too much. You aren’t absolved from disrespectful behavior towards victims just because you started a charitable foundation. Why not benefit victims by considering how you speak about them when telling their stories?

I don’t listen to podcasts. Don’t have the attention span. Expect MrBallen, I found him on Facebook and listen to his video getting ready in the morning. As soon as I learned he created a podcast I redownloaded the podcast app and binging his podcast. He is an amazing storyteller and the stories he tells are amazing and intense. I started by watching your YouTube videos and was completely captivated by your storytelling. The way you make us feel the story, not just hear it. I could not stop after I saw one of your videos on Facebook. My wife was so annoyed because I probably watched over 150 of your videos within a couple weeks going all the way back to your start. The female voices are, well, just not as soothing and makes it hard to keep my attention. Any suggestions Mr. Ballen? It is ok if not. Can’t miss podcast
This is the best mystery/crime storyteller I’ve ever heard. He puts Dateline to shame, and I love Dateline. An absolute must listen. Only issue is the overdone requests to subscribe and review, same as the youtube channel with likes, but hey, it’s a small price to pay.

Is there a ten star button?
Listen to it! It won’t let you down. First found Mr.Ballen on YouTube, but tried to lower my screen time and only really use my phone or any other device for music, podcasts, and means of necessary communication. Once I found out he had a podcast, I was SO HAPPY! Try it out! You won’t be able to listen to only one, guaranteed! Only complaint is that I haven’t found it sooner!

Best story teller ever
I started on Facebook, one of your videos popped up after watching animal videos 😂😂 but I absolutely LOVE this type of story telling and I’m also fascinated by these topics. I didn’t know there even was someone that posted things like this until Facebook, from Facebook I went to YouTube and from YouTube I’m here (only because YouTube can’t play in the background without paying). This is literally the only reason I even downloaded podcast! I have no idea what I’m going to do when I run out of strange dark and mysterious delivered in story format 🥹such a huge fan I’m considering buying shirts and phone cases 😂😂 also hats off for being a former Navy Seal and relating that to some deep diving stories and other stories just to explain deeper with your own experiences!

This podcast, in general, is very good. Interesting and unique stories make it worth a listen. I could do without the bizarre ‘humor’ ads and review requests, but that’s easy enough to fast forward through. I also don’t like when podcasts use sound effects- it feels cheesy, so I could do without that as well. Overall though I look forward to new episodes.

Overall gripping and interesting. The weird breathing in the background while he talks is annoying and distracting. Would be nice if podcaster pronounced “room” with two oo’s rather than “rahum,” also distracting. Last critique is pronouncing forward with both R’s. Fantastic Show and host
For anyone who loves true crime or dark tales this is for sure the podcast to listen to. Mr. Ballen has a great way he tells the stories and how he presents the material in the show, always makes you want more, I’m glad it’s two episodes a week and Mr. Ballen also is a veteran and having served in the military myself, I highly recommend this show.

Overall a great true crime podcast, BUT...
What is with Mr. Ballen’s aversion to saying “sexually” when a girl or woman is sexually assaulted? I’m like, ok so she was beat or was she raped? It’s just such a weird thing, is there an explanation for this or does it just make the host uncomfortable to say those words? Otherwise I like this podcast, but I get hung up on details when they aren’t expressed in an accurate way for whatever reason. He gives details you don’t get in other pods, but as descriptive as he is that one blind spot really bothers me.

So Catchy
I love this show. It’s a great mix of stories I’ve never heard and ones that I have, but told in a way I haven’t or with details I haven’t. I am never bored listening to this and find myself sitting in my living room at night just to finish an episode I couldn’t on the way home. Short and enjoyable to listen to
I have about a 15 minute drive to work every day, I stopped listening to podcasts because of how long they were. I enjoy true crime, but the way Mr Ballen speaks so casually, and the way he writes his stories always keeps me intrigued which makes me drives to work more enjoyable. I’ve started listening to them at work when I’m by myself (sometimes not the best idea for my dreams) because it makes it easy to pass the time. I love his YouTube videos as well! Highly recommend. I Needed This
God only knows what took me so lng to seek out Mr. Ballen's podcast, but I just downloaded all 49 episodes. His videos are a large part of my YouTube history, so now his podcasts are a large part of my iTunes. He is a wonderful storyteller. I suffer from misophonia, so I am very picky about narration, and I could listen to him all day, which I'll be doing. So happy these have finally been turned into podcasts! I have watched his YouTube channel for a while and I’m not big into podcasts so I didn’t think I’d be hooked but I can’t get enough. MrBallen is an amazing story teller and makes my mornings at work go so much faster. :)

One of the best if not THEE BEST.....
MrBallen hands down is one of the best story tellers out. When he tells a story it's so detailed that you can imagine/picture everything he saying. You even feel the emotions of the people. He gets straight to the point as well and always talks about stories I never heard of. I've watched all of his YouTube videos so now I'm here ready to binge these podcast....I will go wherever he goes to tell a story. One last thing.... which is most important. Thank You MrBallen for your service for our country. (My father r.i.p served as well)😢

I am a huge fan of all the shows and podcasts from Dateline NBC, to Wondery’s “Dr.Death” and “Against the Odds”… But Mr. Ballen, brings a whole new TWIST. There is never an episode that I am not fully invested in! I can’t get enough, and you can’t go wrong!

My family loves Mr Ballen
We watch Mr Ballen on YouTube as a family. We love how he gives viewer discretions. Those are the stories we save for just my husband and I. My kids love listening and watching the videos. We love getting together at night making it our weekend show pretty much. Thank you for being so awesome! The podcasts are more viewer discretions which my husband and I love because the show started off as something we watched before bed. Then the kids fell in love too. Thank you for all the work you put into your shows and podcasts! We all really enjoy them!

So captivating
This man has such an amazing authors voice. The videos are so interesting and he really makes you feel like it’s just someone casually telling you the story of what happened. And he just makes it so down to earth. I I feel like I don’t ever wanna put them down and just keep listening.

Misrepresentations
As much as I enjoy this podcast, and as much research he does for his episodes, the obvious misrepresentations of the Christian faith leave a bad taste in my mouth. I recommend for future episodes that Ballen use GotQuestions.org as a source so these misrepresentations can be mitigated. Also, the LDS teachings do not center around the teachings of Christ, Joseph Smith Jr perverted the gospel. Simple research would show you the truth.

Thumping noise. Winger story
I was surprised you covered this story. I live in Springfield , Il. I lived down the road from the house he bought in the country. We were watching and wondering if they would arrest him. He tried to hire someone to murder the person he had the affair with. And got more time for it. Never knew what happened to his second wife and kids- so thanks for that update. He came so close to getting away with it.

Keeps me on the edge of my toes
When I first listen to this I was soo into the video I was on my toes at the edge of my seat . When he got to the ending I was so surprised I fell of my chair and then I turned around and realized it was the five star review button who pushed me .
