Reflect, renew, and recalibrate your compass
I started listening to the first podcast about mission, and was pleased to hear it was inspired by Joseph Campbell. I was worried that a podcast about mission would be based in a particular religion. This podcast addresses universal, nondenominational, basic truths about the human journey. Keep up the good work. I am looking forward to listening to more.

- Are financial influencers more important than credit reporting agencies? For as long as we can recall, the business world has allowed credit rating agencies to have the final say on a company’s worthiness. Even if the system seemed arbitrary at its best (and corrupt at its worst), there was still tremendous value in earning a AAA rating. Likewise, there was tremendous fear of seeing your rating drop to the dreaded “junk” status, especially when it comes to a company’s stock price. In this episode, after a week that saw our company’s own bank struggle mightily, Steph and Albert take a deep dive into the changing world of corporate financing. They discuss how increased access to information may benefit financial influencers, and could spell the end of ratings agencies holding all the cards when it comes to determining company value. It’s a divisive topic, for sure. So let us know your thoughts! Drop us an email at info@mission.org to share your own perspectives on this discussion. - How to Determine Your Buyback Rate - A Second Look at “Buy Back Your Time”Ask and you shall receive! After getting a FLOOD of feedback on our episode,"How to buy back your time (and why you really should)", we decided to talk about it (at least) one more time. Today, we dive deeper into the concepts from the book Buy Back Your Time by Dan Martell. Steph shares how to determine your "buyback rate" and why it's something that you should consider budgeting for, even if you’re a million dollars shy of being a millionaire. (Budgeting for this is actually a lot more affordable than you think.) Then, Steph and Albert continue their debate about whether or not it's actually useful to have a virtual assistant, and which use cases make more sense than others. We need to hear your thoughts! - Mission Daily Mar 14 · 30m How to own your story (and your success)Is the story you tell yourself a limitation? Or is it your liberation? Albert and Steph examine why your perception of your personal history plays a greater role in who you become than the actual events of your past. Or as Albert's mom used to put it: “It does not matter what happens to you; it matters what you do next.” Ultimately, the type of life you will end up living depends on the thoughts you have and the goals you set today. You own your story, it does not own you. And it’s up to you to write (and possibly rewrite) it in a way that sets course for happiness and fulfillment. Confused? Just hit “play.” Because, Steph and Albert share tools, quotes, and thought patterns to help you find that path. - Why you should stop following highly successful people (kinda)Your thoughts become who you are. If you want different outputs, first you must change your inputs. Steph and Albert discuss how to “retrain” your brain by auditing what you are consuming, including tips on how to calibrate your social media feeds for a more positive mindset. No, this doesn’t mean following more highly successful people. In fact, we recommend doing the opposite. They also touch on their tips for making business content go viral, and which industries they think are ripe for innovation. - How to buy back your time (and why you really should)Delegating. Outsourcing. Reprioritizing. To the average person, these terms might give off a sense of passivity and lackluster effort. But in reality, business success doesn’t have to come at the expense of your freedom. Instead, successful entrepreneurs know how to pass along work that doesn’t inspire them, so they can focus on work that does. This week’s episode tackles the question, “Does free time have more impact on professional success than time spent working?” According to Wall Street Journal best-selling author Dan Martell, the answer is a resounding “yes.” According to Albert and Stephanie, there’s way more to this topic than meets the eye. Tune in to hear a spirited discussion about how our hosts view this concept, how they create separation between their work and personal lives, and what things they value most from their own free time. (Spoiler: There may be a middle ground for some people, but Albert and Stephanie are definitely sitting on different sides of this debate.) - Is your startup worth it? Here’s how to find out.Our company is in crisis mode. With our largest client pulling all their contracts just a week before the new year, we had to navigate some very rough waters. So what did Steph do? She went on vacation. What did Albert do? He rented a Tesla. Why? Because they both felt that they needed to recharge their batteries (EV pun not intended). By recentering their minds and focusing on experiences outside of work, they were able to ask themselves: Is saving this company worth it? - Why You Need to Diversify Your Clients... QuicklyWe lost 70% of our revenue two months ago. We had to cut a third of our full-time staff. Here’s what we are learning the hard way: Diversify your clients as soon as possible. Don’t rely on one company to provide the bulk of your revenue. Diversify the industry you play in. That way if one industry crashes (like tech right now) you are left in a strong position with companies from other industries. Understand the potential downsides of longer contracts - you might not be checking in on client satisfaction as often as you should. - We lost 70% of our revenue… Here’s what happenedIn December 2022, just three days before Christmas, our biggest client called and terminated all of their contracts. In that 20-minute phone call, we lost 70% of our revenue. Each day, our newsfeeds are plastered with articles about giant tech layoffs, but for every one giant business going through cutbacks, there are hundreds of small businesses facing the ripple effects of these events. So what did we do? How did we bounce back? Truth is… we haven’t. At least not yet. Instead, we are buckling down and preparing for a season of “war-time.” Tune in to hear how we handled our own cutbacks, and how we are thinking about moving forward. - Why You Need Stress to Function at a High LevelNovel experiences shape the brain and foster mental agility. At the same time, routines lead to better efficiency and productivity. So how can you balance the “novel and new” with the “old and repeatable?” In this episode, Steph and Albert reveal how they strategically leverage their routines, while also leaving time to engage in spontaneous, high-stress, or challenging ventures. They also address what this means for older and/or retired people who lose their mental acuity as they age. They talk about the role of elders in different cultures, and how these elders don’t "retire" in the conventional sense but instead serve as an essential source of knowledge and leadership for the community - a practice that may help them stay mentally sharp.
