Yes!
I love this podcast. For me personally it challenges a lot of the “knowledge”/judgements/pseudo sciences that I grew up believing about wellness and essentially diet culture! I love their humor and intelligence and feel like I’ve grown a lot in my person development and outgrown a lot of biases from listening to them!

All the perfect ingredients for a binge-able podcast
As a big fitness nerd, I wasn’t sure if I would like this, but it has all the perfect ingredients of a perfect show-great chemistry between the hosts, exhaustive research, and a definite POV while still offering a balanced perspective.

Great content but….
Love their content that seems well researched, but they often slide some anti-conservative comments in here and there. C’mon, we’re not all far right a-holes! Also, despite some of the disturbing conversations about food, they still make me hungry. Great pod. 👍

Well done!
This is my new “go to” podcast. Aubrey and Mike are incredible hosts. Every episode is well researched and debunks all that I thought I knew about nutrition and wellness. They shine a light on the hideous way we treat overweight and fat people, our paths to disordered eating and the strange, disgusting and sometimes hilarious ways hucksters bamboozle us all into believing their latest wellness magic bullet.

Researched and funny
Aubrey and Mike have such great banter and bring out the best in each other. Even topics you didn’t think you had interest in end up with the wildest back story and/or side quest in a political campaign. It’s a delight through and through.

A celebration of truth
I just love this podcast! Aubrey and Mike are two of the most articulate, thorough, and empathetic people I’ve had the pleasure of learning from. This show will change the way you relate to your body, diet and wellness culture, and other people. It’s given me such a deep appreciation for exploring nuance, seeking truth among noise, and approaching science as a thoroughly human endeavor.

My all-purpose podcast
I’ve listened to every episode multiple times at this point and still, I learn something new, cringe, and crack up every time I listen. The thoughtfulness and delightful banter of Aubrey and Michael are the best way to work through your own body crap and the systems and structures that indoctrinate us with anti-fat bias on the day to day. If there were more stars, I’d give them all to Maintenance Phase. <3

Very tough listen. After I get past the hosts awkward laughter…I just hear a bunch of pseudo science and excuses. If you want to feel better about yourself then subscribe and listen. If you want to learn about the way things work in the real world, look elsewhere.

I don’t know why it’s taken me this long to write this. This podcast has given me back part of my life. It helps me to see the evil of capitalist diet culture and how I always felt not good enough and I have gotten off the diet cycle. I have so many thoughts, but I just love these two, I love that they don’t take advertisers, and I think what they are doing is really brave in a fatphobic world. Kind of just ruin everything without providing helpful information?
This podcast "debunks" health myths but they never provide any actual helpful health information. Their information is not always correct or coming from a place of science (claiming probiotics have no health benefits to the body? Without any training or knowledge on the subject). Mike never knows what the topic is and aubrey makes fun of everything. Huberman Labs hosted by an actual neuroscientist is a much better more reliable podcast.

Truly Interesting / Episode Suggestions
Truly interesting learning about the food science and the psychology behind certain diet trends. If you get around to it, I would love to hear an episode debunking the vegan diet, and one on Orlistat (Alli), the stuff is evil, lol.

Taking back the word fat, one episode at a time!
I LOVE this podcast!! You’re Wrong About and a great friend brought me to MP (much love to Michael Hobbes!) and made me want to meet Aubrey for a cup of coffee and discuss anti-fatness and the non-science of all the wellness and health myths. As someone who was considered obese in college, has experienced multiple types of ED’s, and who since the age of 8, never fully understood the “Presidential Fitness Test”, this podcast was perfect for me! With a combo of wittiness, humor, and serious research, everyone needs to listen to MP!

Aubrey and Michael may be the best duo of podcast history. They’re both so incredibly smart and this pod is deeply researched. The subject matter is interesting but Aubrey and Michael make it fascinating. If you’re in the mood for an interesting, witty, thought provoking, novel podcast here it is.

Show is complete opposite of its stated goal.
Lots of opinions, bias, and unearned sarcasm as they fumble through studies. I’ve been passionate & interested in diet/exercise for the last 25 years and has my views changed along with the science. These hosts present views about 20 years out of date. My career is in mental health and sadly I’ve watched it’s “science” change with politics and culture. These hosts are doing that to this topic. This show is nothing like Freakonomics or Stuff You Should Know.

Good with history but bad with science
I’ve listened to a lot of these episodes because I want to be a more aware person and be a better ally to fat folks. I love their detailed critiques of junk science like Dr. Oz. However, they spend a lot of time critiquing actual scientists without citing their sources for the conclusions that they draw. Why should we trust podcasters’ opinions over people who went to school for a decade to study science and health? For example, in their “President’s Physical Fitness Test” episode, Aubrey gripes that a larger person would ofc huff and puff when trying to run because they are carrying more weight, but she also believes that this person could be healthy. If your body was actually healthy, it could carry its own weight without straining itself. Another example is in their “What’s Our Deal” episode when Mike says that telling people not to smoke didn’t work, but that’s literally not true. The smoking rate has actually decreased over time. …So there’s quite a few logical fallacies and actual fallacies sprinkled throughout. But if you can ignore the fact that they occasionally skimp on logic to further their agenda, it’s a good listen.

Kind of obsessed with this one. Hosts are lovely human beings. I want to learn to be a methodology Queen. One and done
Lets get one thing clear, being fat is unhealthy. There is much research to demonstrate that being overweight affects your overall health. I just listened to the latest episode and at the end one of the hosts goes about why take it against fat people. Fat people should be accepted, this and that. But its not that you aren’t accepted, its just that being overweight does put us at a higher risk of having life threatening diseases. It is not discrimination, its science! For our overall health its not ok to be overweight!! Take a health class at a college if you want better, accurate and factual information about better choices for your health.

I feel slapped.
You don’t give much of a synopsis telling what the show is about but boy do you ever jump right into the “Show me the money!” phase mighty soon! Too soon. Listing the sources like that is just plain lazy. Just slapping them down there like that can’t be accurate or do justice to the sources that make your podcast. Pass.

Not cool
Just listened to the mailbag episode and I think it’s pretty crappy for Aubry to bag on people who are just trying to be nice and pay her a compliment. Just because it’s not the “right kind” of compliment doesn’t mean that you can’t still accept it in the spirit it was given. If the giver didn’t love you they wouldn’t have said anything at all.

Good I go dragged into a long conversation
Listened to a couple of episodes and the hosts provided some good information. However, the presentation format is not to my liking and I felt that the casual conversation between the hosts were too long and drawn out. The constant cursing makes it hard to listen to when trying to go for a relaxing walk while listening to something educational. I’ll try more episodes later.

Propaganda rather than fact-based sensible talking
Quite a few episodes outrageously discourage qualitative, factual and logic-driven thinking. It is virtually propaganda, which could be a legitimate type of podcast and attract their own audience. In one episode, the hosts’ criticism on econometrics is absurd, lacks respect to a field the host themselves are not experts in, and profoundly is unsettling to those with graduate and postdoctoral training in qualitative disciplines.

I’m with you until
You veer off into criminal Justice issues. Your lack of humility when discussing what is clearly not an area of expertise is so off putting and so unlike the rigor you genuinely show to other topics. I love you both but come on. Mayhem is its own crime. Laws named after people are not uniformly bad. Divorcing the victims experience from the conversation is why we can’t have any meaningful reform.

As someone who lost 100 pounds on weight watchers only to develop an eating disorder, then gain the 100 pounds back, I cannot thank you enough for this podcast. It has helped me accept myself in ways I never thought imaginable. Thank you, thank you, thank you! You have validated all of my experiences. Weight loss put me in a deep depression that has taken nearly a decade to manage. I had to starve myself to lose weight. It was unsustainable in every way yet I kept getting kudos from those around me. I have decided that I am lovable at any weight and am not going to hyper focus on food anymore.

Overlaps with S*wbones?
EDIT: I am updating this because it never made it to the review page. This has less to do with your current episodes BUT— your earliest episodes. I went through them all. They systematically were beat for beat the same as the Sawbones episodes that came out almost ten years before. You could say you were correcting them, but you explain things in those episodes with the same analogies Sydney uses. It’s just weird. I don’t know if you just think she’s fatphobic or something but it’s clear you’ve listened to their podcast. I do love this show though this is just something I can’t really move past week to week I keep hearing you echo it. Another update: there was an episode you did that made a lot of assumptions about how farming works and you were wrong (as a person who went to school in part for agriculture). I just don’t get how you can literally make an episode critiquing it’s ability to just jump to conclusions and then do the exact same thing. I get books have editors but so do you lol

debunk “in defense of food”!
Hi! I love your podcast, it’s a very good way for me to unlearn the health myths I was taught growing up at the peak of America’s freak out over the “obesity epidemic”. That stuff always bothered me but I thought it had to be right since I couldn’t disprove it and I had a really really unhealthy relationship with food and eating. Now that I’m in college, your podcast is helping me make actually healthy food choices instead of hyper analyzing everything I do. I know you already covered Micheal pollen but I wondered if you would debunk his other book, “in defense of food”. It was given to me as a recommendation (ew) and made me absolutely furious but not for reasons I could pin down. I would love for you to debunk this book!

Disappointed
I am a former county health inspector and I was so interested to hear about the outbreak from lentils-this was the first show I listened to. The hosts reported on the reasons why vegetables and fruits were starting to be the culprits of outbreak sources. Their reasoning was wrong though-it was said that the peel/skin protects the fruit from contamination-this is not correct when it comes to contamination. The skin/peel is the source of bacteria (in melon for example). If it is not washed thoroughly before slicing, all of the bacteria on the outside comes in contact with the flesh/fruit part and is then considered “potentially hazardous”. I gave the hosts a pass because I thought they were funny and you can’t fault someone for not knowing….but then the next episode that was playing was discussing Dr. Oz and his talk of ghost flights and crazy theories. But I just heard the discussion on the food safety and the mistakes made there, so how do the hosts know that he is wrong? I hate when shows turn political. It’s a total turn off! So many young kids are walking away with enlarged hearts after having the vaccine. Look it up-it’s true. Do your research before reporting is all I am thinking.

My favorite podcast
This podcast brings me joy. The co-hosts bring nuance, empathy, and infectious curiosity to each topic they cover. Not only have I learned fascinating info (how did I not know about BMI’s origins??) but I feel like the way they walk through a story is often hilarious and also—especially when they are focusing on people—infused with humanity. So often they expose how broken our systems are, rather than just pinning blame on an individual. It’s changed how I think about all types of oppression. Utterly brilliant, I hope they keep producing episodes forever!

Maybe the most important podcast of our time?
This podcast is life changing. I’ve taken the information here into my professional life, and used it to challenge anti fat bias among the mental health and primary care providers I work with. As a mental health and chronic pain researcher in a medical facility, having such a well researched podcast to serve data right up to my ears is a blessing. AND it’s a fun joyful listen; I look forward to learning from my friends Aubrey and Michael. I make a gleeful little “yay!” noise every time I see a new ep in my feed, and then text the other 3 friends I know who are obsessed. I recommend this show to everyone in my life, and now I recommend it to you- go listen at once!!

Can’t get enough MP
Waiting 2 weeks for a new ep is borderline torture. Aubrey and Michael are such thoughtful, thorough, intelligent, engaging hosts. Amazing host chemistry, incredible research, fascinating topics, conversational tone but well-planned and organized narrative in each episode. They make me cackle out loud regularly and have opened my eyes to so many facets of the wellness world/industry and beyond. Even the more “opinion-based” moments that some reviewers are critical of are valuable to me. Why not hear/consider an opinion from the perspective of a highly intelligent and well-informed person, even if you don’t necessarily agree with it? The whole point of the pod is to wake you up and empower you to seek more info/ask questions about the systems and processes we buy into blindly. A must listen!

I love this podcast. It cuts through a lot of the underlying fat-phobia that is presented as reasonable and identifies the pseudo-science with a sense of humor. The truth about obesity, etc is a lot more complex than calories in, calories out. And they point that out with actual research.

Some topics are interesting…
With some topics a lot of the presented information seems well-researched while other content is transparently opinion passed off as fact. As others have mentioned, the fake laughing can get really annoying. Aubrey does a good job of giving listeners an idea of the emotional toll a lot of these diets could have taken on the people being pressed to use them. One really odd thing that remains in the back of my mind is how Michael’s voice seemed to have changed from the first few episodes. It may be his intonation or his phrases but it’s certainly strange.

Perspective altering, smart, funny… what’s not to like?
I can’t think of another podcast that has so altered my thinking not just on the topic it covers but on a host of other issues. Beyond the way in which it debunks popular wellness fads, diet books and the hucksters behind them, I’ve found Maintenance Phase to be one of the best media criticism podcast around. One can apply the lessons learned listening to MP to a host of other issues, which hopefully will make us all smarter consumers of cable news and other surface-deep media outlets. The hosts are smart and bring a depth of knowledge and preparedness and great storytelling to each episode. Plus, they’re funny and have terrific chemistry. Highly recommended.

Don’t throw fat spiritual people under the bus.
I am a queer femme person of size. I’ve only just come to know about this podcast and the content produced by both hosts. I am a big ( no pun intended) proponent of fat acceptance so naturally finding this podcast was breath of fresh air. Then I came across the Marianne Willamson episode. In just the intro it became clear that she wasn’t going to be given a fair shot. I am an inter spiritual minister , reiki master, Crystal lover and all around new age witchy flower child …. In short … I may actually be a Totoro I’m not sure, All kidding aside I’ve met Marianne Willamson I’ve campaigned for her and … I definitely disagree with her book on weight loss. I don’t know if she feels the same way on weight today but even so. She’s not antivax never was I wouldn’t have voted for her in the primary if she was. I think the thing that turned me off the most though wasn’t the criticism of Marianne, but it’s how the language used about her could easily isolate plus sized spiritual folk like me. Please consider in the future not doing that. I still plan to continue listening but I wanted to state my opinion.

Not sure how I feel
Sometimes I think this podcast is about making valid excuses to NOT take care of yourself, and if you ARE taking care of yourself, sound a body cleanse, etc., then they see it as a body disorder. As a nurse I believe they should do some more research and actually read the books (French women don’t get fat for example where it’s admitted they didn’t, and if one person read it, they skip over key facts and the authors note on the book saying it’s not a diet book and the book is intended to help you lose the 5lb you want by not over eating). Obesity isnt cool and is also considered an eating disorder. Other things are cool like the wine episode, but for the most part from my medical opinion, they should do better and not be so quick to judge just because of their insecurity. Period. K

Opened my eyes
Listening to this podcast has caused a major shift in the way I look at so many things I used to think I knew. It has also made me a kinder person because it has decimated my assumptions about fat people and opened my eyes to how we treat them. I see the world differently thanks to Aubrey and Mike.

A full catalog of well-researched stories to help interrogate your own anti-fat bias.
I listen to a ton of podcasts but cannot recall the last one that inspired me to start from the beginning and listen to every episode on the feed — Aubrey and Michael have such a fun rapport, which is crucial to make it easier on the listener who finds himself breaking down years of learned anti-fat bias seemingly laced through all of American culture. (It’s me, I’m that guy)

What’s not to love?!
I have never before written a review for a podcast but just finished listening to the Paul braggs episode and just had to come here and say i absolutely love this podcast, cursing and all! When i first started listening, i binged all the episodes and now I’m devastated to be caught up and have to wait two weeks for the next one. Aubrey and Michael are SO REAL, i love all the health and diet grifting that’s discussed. I wish i could be friends with them IRL. I’ll never stop listening to these two!

I’ve listened to every episode. Michel and Aubrey corrected all the misconceptions I was raised with about weight, food, and calories. Excellent podcast!!
I’m from PA and Dr Oz is a joke. This is a man who sells diet pills thru ads, doesn’t want gun control because it gives him more patients to operate on, and walks around on ED pills so he can get off but won’t give me the option of an abortion. Absolute ethical moron who should have lost his license years ago.

I was excited to learn about the topics listed but it seemed like the podcast consisted more of them making fun of people than research itself. Just felt high-school-girl-nasty. Not the podcast for me but that’s ok.

Bad Luck? Or the Best Luck?
I had the bad luck, some might say good luck, of the first episode that I listen to for this podcast being the calories in versus calories out episode. For a podcast which prides itself on being scientific and using science to debunk health fads it was rather sad to see not a single mention of the basic elements of EER and BMR as they relate to daily calorie intake and our ability to reduce body weight through calorie reduction. Truth be told the entire episode seemed like it was an editorial piece for why fat shaming is bad and no one can actually lose weight. Suffice to say this is not a science-based view nor does it comport with the best available evidence about body weight reduction. I would recommend taking anything that this podcast says with a huge grain of salt

The best thing on radio - if there were such thing as radio
Michael and Aubrey do a ton of research to get ready for these episodes and it shows. The format is clever because only one of them needs to do the deep work prior to the episode and the other just needs to react (and they do REACT). My favorite episodes are the ones that expose influencers (past and present) for the Boardwalk Carnies we know they are. Power to the thinkers who bother to dig even 1 mm below the surface of life!

Never enough!
I LOVE what the two hosts do on this podcast. Learning common fallacies and MOs of marketing and sales regarding health, wellness, and dieting, learning about fatphobia and challenging the ways in which it hurts and kills, and learning some crazy &@&? about the history behind this industry. Definitely one I refer to often in conversations, a memorable duo. My only regret is that I can’t yet share it with my kids, as am not comfortable letting them listen to some of the strong language. (I know they hear it everywhere else, but we try to avoid it at home). Maybe a kids’ version episode sometime? Would eat that UP!!!!

Not for those with mild hearing loss
I don’t think the hosts are trying to be inconsiderate of people with hearing issues who wish to listen to a podcast with headphones/earbuds (i.e., no hearing aids in). Perhaps they have just taken criticism of loud yelling or laughter as that - criticism. So I thought that maybe a more friendly take might help. Hosts: please be aware that some of your listeners are hard of hearing and need to have the volume up higher than normal to make out certain sounds in speech, which only make the loud interjections (sometimes actual yelling) a very uncomfortable experience. So uncomfortable that it usually ends the listening session, in my case. I wanted to love this podcast because I so enjoyed Michael on You’re Wrong About and I liked the parts of Maintenance Phase I’ve been able to take in. But after a few episodes spaced out over several months, I must give up. I don’t wish to sound like the people who would criticize a person’s laughter (laughter is so important in life). However, when a person habitually makes decisions like fake laughing over and over (e.g., 39 minute mark of French Women Don’t Get Fat), it doesn’t truly feel like an actual expression of joy. And that changes things for me. For the love of all the gods - please rethink yelling, deliberately “laughing” loudly to make a point, etc, on this type of media. It is quite literally uncomfortable, physically, and really pulls focus away from the many positives. At least for people like me who don’t have proper hearing but wish to listen privately with earbuds. I hate to sound so entitled but it genuinely saddens me that I can’t listen to this awesome podcast, especially given that my friends/colleagues reference it so much.

Entertaining and informative
This show is a much needed discussion about anti-fat bias and health and wellness trends. But it’s also very funny and entertaining and hopeful. What is healthy eating?
Would you guys be down to do an episode that discusses what healthy eating actually is? You talk periodically about people having the signs and symptoms of disordered eating. I don’t know if I have a clear picture of what healthy & well ordered eating is? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen it! Could you give us an episode that explains what a healthy relationship to food actually looks like?

Def not for me The hosts obviously research their topics but I felt I way more informed than they were thru the podcasts I listened to....and I'm just a casual food enthusiast And I'm realizing I don't like podcasts where the hosts see themselves as entertainers more than information providers And there is waaaaaaaay too much partisan politics injected into their discussions

Listen with a grain of salt (entertaining, but not evidence-based)
I first listened to the Rachel Hollis episodes and loved Aubrey & Michael’s back and forth and humor. Unfortunately, while the hosts are entertaining, most of what they discuss on the show are opinions without any basis in fact. They attempt to “debunk” scientific studies, but don’t appear to have any understanding of epidemiology or clinical trial methodology and results interpretation. The studies they do provide to support their opinions are cherry picked or misrepresented. Some of their discussions around diet culture, stigma, social determinants of health etc are thoughtful and may be beneficial for someone new to these topics who may be unaware. However these are couched in pseudoscience, limiting the podcast’s actual value. Verdict: listen if you would like to hear two people discuss their opinions on diet culture with humor - but don’t expect it to be educational. Please consult scientific experts for real evidence.

Couldn’t finish an episode
I listened to half the podcast about paleo diet and was disappointed because the hosts are not having an intellectual discussion and are not researching their topic well. I came to the podcast episode because I was interested if there was any real negative effects of the diet, but the only negativity I felt came from the hosts, who have an attitude of superiority without any real knowledge to back it up. Their dialogue was very childish and certainly didn’t convince me of anything other than to not listen to this show.

The disappointing Goop episode actually made me think of something Sarah Marshall said in the Porn Wars ep of You’re Wrong About: women in America have been so gaslit that it’s hard to know what we want. The way M and A talked about women during the 3rd act of the goop ep was terribly disappointing.

I was SUCH a fan for the first year but the amount of high on its own supply this podcast has gotten is truly unlistenable. I still enjoy Aubrey a lot in other formats, but woof, this show is so past being interesting or thoughtful at all. Negative Vibe
Pretentious and continuous snark and just an overall negative listen. It’s more about the hosts being above everyone than a well rounded, educated discourse. I listened to two episodes. The “omg’s” with seemingly unending eye rolls and exaggerated and superior laughter… bad energy and plain distracting. I get they’re trying to be “cool” and even take a few shots for an attempt at humor, but listening to mean hipsters with virtue signaling complexes… ugh. Loads of far better health oriented podcasts to give your attention to. With better research and credentials.

UPDATE: originally I loved the show, but now I’m bored with it because every show is predictable: maniacal laughter and ridicule. Humor can make negative info more palatable, yes, but the hosts go over the top with the nasty commentary and jabs. This is an excellent podcast hosted by research pros who reflect critically on the historical context and societal influences that levy every human body in the USA (and sometimes Europe). They give important warnings and contextualize their lived experiences in a way that is so recognizable. Just a really great listen every time. I love the topics, the content, and their laughs. This podcast has helped me understand my own confusing upbringing around food and expectations on women. Also thank you for dispelling diet food by trying it and sharing honest reactions!! All days are improved by a new episode of this podcast
I’m a devotee. I feel improved and empowered by every episode. This is the only podcast when a new episode drop has me scrambling for the play button, no matter what I’m doing. Thank you for investigating the wellness industry and helping me become a better person: I have spent my entire life watching my weight climb up and down, in an endless yo-yo, while my mother and society judged me. I’ve developed eating disorders cleverly disguised as successful weight loss plans. During years of “slimness” I’ve been one of those formerly fat people who said “I did it, you can to! Here’s how, it’s easy!!” I’ve learned so much SPECIFICALLY from this podcast about how to respect other people’s bodies, the ways in which my “caring” is actually just me being controlling, judgmental, and self-critical! Thank you for helping me become a better friend, a more sensitive human, and much, much kinder to myself.

So insightful!
I’ve been a fat woman for my entire adulthood. I’ve successfully lost significant weight six times, and I’ve tried unsuccessfully dozens of times. I weigh my food, track my calories, macros, and/or Points. I’ve given up my wine, Reese’s, and pizza for years at a time. I’ve trained for half marathons. I’ve hired personal trainers and physical therapists for several hundred sessions. I’ve taken hundreds of kickboxing, yoga, spin, and dance classes. I’ve joined Weight Watchers, met with therapists, psychiatrists, and neurologists. I’ve taken psychological drugs. I’ve taken prescription weight loss drugs and thyroid hormone replacements. I’ve met with multiple registered dietitians and doctors who have studied obesity medicine. I’ve read hundreds of magazines, websites, and dozens of books. I follow the vast majority of weight loss guidelines. Yet I’m still fat. People who think all fat people are lazy do not understand what it is like to follow all diet and exercise advice, and to not get the results that are promised. Maintenance Phase gets it. Aubrey and Mike are debunking all the garbage that is brainwashing our diet culture. The classic diet advice is not successful in the long term for the vast majority of people, and maintenance phase investigates the origin story for each piece of advice. I know I’m not alone. I now understand why some of my habits are based on garbage studies, rather than solid scientific evidence. It helps me change my mindset, and give myself a little grace. Perhaps the “top five tips to lose weight” is not the whole story, and there are real reasons I have not yet been successful at losing and keeping weight off. And it’s not my fault that the scientific community hasn’t figured it out yet.

Little information on a maximum of time
I’ve only listened to one episode, The trouble with calories, but the hosts spend most if their time horsing around and very little with informing us in the subject. I want information, not just idle commentary. I don’t plan to waste my time with more of their podcasts.

Good, but sometimes a bit much
Informative pod, and definitely made me rethink some things. Though, it’s a bit unfortunate though that almost ever episode revolves around criticizing something or someone. Would be nice to have a bit more variety. Most of the time all the criticism is justified, but every once in a while it seems like it’s just criticism for entertainment’s sake instead of to be informative.

Poor Language and politically slanted
It’s one thing to swear in a podcast but multiple F words in a 45ish minute show is frustrating. So I can’t listen to this show if my kids are around. I’m on the opposite end of the political spectrum BUT I’m totally used to hearing the other side (its literally everywhere), however straight up insulting republicans or conservatives multiple times is just irritating. At the very least you aren’t making any friends that way or extending the olive branch and you are potentially losing someone who might be persuadable. The episode on presidential fitness tests is what I initially came for. It was definitely interesting and well researched. I just wish they had stuck to facts more.

I came across this podcast after listening to Michael in You’re Wrong About and OHMYGOD IT HAS CHANGED MY LIFE!!! I had no idea how cruel I was being to myself, both mentally and physically. There is so much thoughtful research done for every episode and Aubrey and Michael are amazing hosts. Literally the best. I love this podcast! Aubrey and Michael are top-notch researchers and presenters and I have learned so much from listening to their show. Their humor and obvious mutual respect for one another make learning about serious issues like fat phobia, discriminatory practices in the employment and healthcare sectors, the capitalism-driven diet and “wellness” industry, and junk nutritional science a true pleasure.

You’re allowed to disagree
But bringing down a show’s rating because you disagree is asinine. Not only that, there are comments that CLEARLY don’t understand the purpose of the show. Someone saying “CICO is medically sound!” and “BMI is not bad!” and “I came here to listen to a podcast about maintaining a healthy weight!!!111” Okay? Learn how to Google better? So unless you’re offering a useful critique like the way people talk, research, debate, etc. then keep your useless comments to yourself and find a pod that suits you. Otherwise, you’re a troll and you don’t know it. There are people recovering from eating disorders reading these comments but no, you had to go out of your way to say “there’s nothing wrong with dieting!”…“obesity is killing us!” and all that. You missed the point, please keep it to yourself and don’t make it other people’s problem. Go find your own space because this ain’t it.

To the person who called Aubrey racist…
There is no such thing as anti white racism and you should perhaps do some research on why. This show does not promote victim mentality, it debunks what so much of our nutrition “science” is based on, and why diet culture is essentially fat shaming. And to the person who said obesity didn’t exist 100 years ago… what?! That’s the most ridiculous pronouncement said with the full throated assuredness of someone who don’t know sh¡t.

So encouraging in a world full of fatphobia
I really enjoy this podcast and how it uses research and history of various elements of anti-fat discrimination. This podcast has helped me better focus on being a healthier person rather than focus on my weight as an indicator of my health and value. In my honest opinion, people in the medical field should be listening to this podcast because the fatphobia in medicine is rampant. Thank you to the hosts of this podcast for shining a light on these facts.

Hope
There were zero obesity issues on the planet 100 years ago and evolution doesn’t work that fast to create the epidemic we are currently in. People are over eating and under active in life. This podcast is doing a disservice to people by claiming basically there is nothing you can do and creating a victim class with zero hope.

Could be better
I really want to like this podcast but I find it difficult to finish each episode. The subjects are super interesting but the hosts (Aubrey in particular) are clearly blind to their own bias or pandering to audiences who want to hear that the state of their health is out of their control, public health policy and the healthcare industry are out to blame fat people for everything, and that all research and initiatives are based in fat phobias and shame. I find Michael’s content to be well researched and he seems to pick up on more nuance to these very broad and complex issues whereas Aubrey seems to assume the worst each episode and linking all topics back to some kind of -ism or fat shaming. I think this show would be more enjoyable and informative if Michael had a better counterbalance to discuss these issues with, though admittedly there is a real power to allowing your audience feel vindicated in their frustrations even if it’s not entirely based in logic and reality. Fat phobias and fat discrimination are real but they are not the driving force of every action taken to improve health knowledge and public health policy.

My most beloved podcast
I love listening to Michael Hobbes & Audrey Gordon studiously shred through fitness & wellness nonsense and fatphobia. I would have never expected to love this podcast so much. I haven’t dieted much, but it’s really revealed a lot to me about my relationship to food, and left me with as many questions as answers in a way that feels good & right. I love how often I hear messages like ‘hey, this kind of diet logic has compounding consequences & scientifically speaking does not work’. I love that there is actually an episode thatexamines whether being fat is bad for you. Like— the gumption & the gall, to a just take the time to visit the facts. I’ve learned some very useful information from this podcast about the idea of “being healthy” and about my own needs & values regarding my health. If I could give this more stars, I would.

French Women Are Traumatized, I guess?
AAAAAAAH. Okay. The fact that there’s no spices in the recipes, in addition to there being no oil or salt or anything, really brings it home for me that a not insignificant part of Weight Loss Culture is not deprivation to lose weight, but deprivation because you as a fat person don’t deserve pleasure. So, then, what, pleasure is out of bounds to all except those who can mask the appearance of experiencing pleasure? That’s why we hate sluts for having sex! Ma’am, everyone can tell you enjoyed that, so now you have to go to jail. Huh. Actually. Yeah. Can you hide the ways that enjoy your life? Congratulations, you’re a WASP and you will now get every creature comfort, better not spill anything on your white carpet or admit to an emotion. Okay. I’m rambling now. But. I’m just. Just trashing other people’s work and making weird assumptions?
I listened to the Michael Pollan episode because I am really curious about healthy eating, ways to reduce climate change, AND logical flaws in his suggestions (and what specifically needs to be done instead). I couldn’t get through more than 20 minutes. It’s seriously just a woman who hasn’t read any of his work sitting there and predicting how much she’s going to hate him for supposedly fat shaming (no evidence he did that; she just assumes) or for suggesting individual consumers with means make any changes whatsoever (as opposed to blaming faceless ‘systems’ that, yes, we should change, but that’s not going to magically happen just because you hope it will). Oh and there’s another guy who actually did research for this show and he read some things! But the woman host just constantly interrupts him to low-key hint out of nowhere that maybe Pollan is kinda racist and too old and out of touch. For the record, I am 37, feminist and liberal — pretty far from a boomer stereotype. But this show is definitely not for me. It seems designed for people who see fat shaming and pressure to eat healthier everywhere and want to complain about that endlessly and dwell in a deeply negative, helpless view of the world without any critical thought. Maybe if the tone was actually funny and cathartic and just a tiny bit open minded, I’d be down for it. As is, it’s grating.

Rewired my brain without getting plugged into a battery coffin!
I’ve been listening A LOT to this podcast lately, as I’ve felt disappointed lately in how when my work life gets busy — whoops! There goes balanced eating & regularly consistent exercise. Until listening to this pod, I didn’t realize how much calorie in/calorie out rhetoric had made me feel shame & honestly encouraged a mercurial relationship to my body & health. It’s been a joy to put this on (especially while I’m at the gym) as it’s helping me create a different view on what is health vs “wellness.” I’m more excited by the prospect of say cooking & eating three meals a day & snackies when I’m hungry & want it & reshaping exercise not as a “have to” but “hey, let’s spend some time getting out stress in whatever amount of time or way your body can do that day!” I love that you both bring excitement & enthusiasm to research — normalizing getting curious w/o adding in the blame/shame that often pops up in “wellness” realms. It’s fun & I’m a huge fan. Thank you!!!

Changing me for the better
This podcast has changed the way I think about food, dieting and the culture around food in general. I transitioned to this show after being at avid listener of You’re Wrong About and I have learned so much. I am constantly annoying my friends and family with facts and misconceptions they may have. If you’re going to critique a book, do the least amount of effort and read it first.
The episode about The Omnivore’s Dilemma episode was recommended in a non-affiliated newsletter that I subscribe to so I decided to give it a try. In the first five minutes it was revealed that what the hosts “know” about the book is what people around them who like the book think and feel about broad topics that aren’t actually even in the book. They freely admit they haven’t read it. C’mon guys. It’s a short book and not a difficult read. Recommend you actually do so because it’s not actually about what you say it is.

A sheep dressed in wolf’s clothing
No one is denying the chemistry between these two hosts and no one has to know their intelligence or diligence but they seem to consistently make the same logical errors when researching the show. Something, in medicine, we call diagnostic anchoring and/or diagnostic inertia. They decide well before the episode what the conclusion is going to be and then their research only serves to support that conclusion. As a result, they make a podcast that purports to expose misinformation while only serving as a vehicle for it.

it is racist
Michael is a sensible and well-articulated host. Aubrey, however, adds no value to the podcast. I believe she is white yet every other statement she makes is clearly anti-white racism. Replace white with black and this podcast would have been removed from itunes as racist. Most of the other sounds she makes is either annoying laughter or varios types of exclamations. She does not seem to understand science very much either.

For my birthday
I’m listening on my birthday, looking down on the “French women don’t get fat” diet book, meanwhile I’m skipping all meals so I can eat giant cookie slices. This is an entertaining podcast. I’ve been a life long dieter. As a child I was given a pill to make me eat, after that I was always a fat kid and always being placed on diets. I started working out and counting calories in my late teens and kept my weight down for the most part. Anyways no one cares about all of that but the struggle is real.

This podcast is life-affirming. I have been on and off diets my entire life and have recently decided to just stop being mean to myself. Aubrey and Michael research diets and diet culture and then report what they read. The good news is the nagging feeling that dieting, and self-criticism might *not* *actually* benefit me was correct! Ok Podcast but Unsubbed
Maintenance Phase, when sticking to facts and keeping editorial input to a minimum, is stellar. However, biases and spinning drag it down. The “French Women Don’t Get Fat” episode compelled me to unsubscribe because of the ridicule Michael and Aubrey direct at medically-sound CICO principles. If you over-indulge at an outing with friends and do an extra exercise session that week to compensate for the calories, it does NOT indicate one has an eating disorder. Please STOP painting everything with discriminatory and eating disorder brushes. If behaviors are an obsessive compulsion, then yes, it may be a bad sign. However, that is not what the author is postulating, yet the hosts persist in twisting and misrepresenting. I haven’t read this book and am basing my review solely on what I know to be healthy habits. Much of the book’s content sounds bland, pointless, and some ideas may be problematic, but again, talentless writing and dumb ideas don’t justify the lack of research and unprofessional approach the hosts took to this episode. Unsubscribed.

Anytime I nearly almost get tricked into some body diet gimmick or health craze, I see if I can create a MF fan fiction episode about it in my head. And if I can, it’s a no go.

illusion of certainty… not just for scientists
I appreciate a lot of the perspective that Aubrey and Michael bring and especially for bringing a critical lens to fat phobia and the “obesity epidemic”. But at times I think they also miss the mark. Given the iterative nature of science, it can veer off the path of knowledge if we start building on false premises that are disproven or revealed as overblown or flawed - they give some great examples. Yet, “scientists” are also creative, inquisitive people that aim to stay open to the world around them. Every human brings some bias to their work, and the only way we attend to it is to acknowledge it. We do know that food influences health, but we don’t understand ALL the many and various ways that might be true. However, I do think it’s important to not discount the lived experience of people entirely - especially those living with disability - when it comes to specialized diets. Characterizing disabled people as desperate for anything - wow - that was dismissive. I’m happy to see the wellness industry challenged, but not every dietary choice is ignorant or misguided - as a biological scientist with a weirdo autoimmune system, I can attest to the value of meds and a specific diet. Sometimes the hosts over-reach in their conclusions or cloud the waters with their own misunderstanding or bias. But I love to hear Aubrey laugh, and I as I am trained to question everything, I’ll probably keep listening.

Simply the Best
I love this podcast, love Aubrey and Mike, love everything about it. It has changed my mind about diet and wellness culture in a radical, but helpful, way, allowing me to let go of certain things. I’m prone to all-or-nothingisms, and can easily be swept up, so it’s nice to have these voices of reason providing a reality check. My only complaint is that there aren’t more episodes. I would listen every day!!

My go-to podcast
I love this podcast! Even though it’s focused on the wellness industry, it’s my go-to for all sorts of loony ideas and scams that are peddled as truth these days. Honestly, it’s amazing how many crazy ideas have made their way to the mainstream, and appreciate how Aubrey and Michael make it funny (and even enjoyable) to hear how the world is ending (haha). Aubrey and Michael have created a space to talk about these subjects and by doing so have provided a vocabulary and system to introduce thoughtful and serious critique in a heartfelt and fun way. Because at the end of the day, I’m looking for a way to engage with people I don’t understand, not just another arena to inflame already contentious topics. Along those lines, it never feels like they’re intentionally riling up the audience - they’re just taking about things that interest them and invite the listener into the conversation.

Celery juice episode
Was looking forward to your podcast, but was highly disappointed with the celery juice episode. Juicing has a lot of health benefits. Celery juice especially helps with people who suffer with high blood pressure. While I understand there’s people making insane claims of celery juice having all these benefits, you both make it seem like celery juice does nothing for your health. If I had zero knowledge about the benefits of celery juicing, I would not want to consume it after listening to this episode. It’s sad the misinformation that you’re spreading for the many thousands of people that follow your platform.

Exceptional Show
Fan-freakin’-tastic! My only complaint about this show is that it only comes out bi-weekly. But I know Aubrey and Michael need their time to research and get their facts, so I’ll allow it. 😉 Informative, funny, interesting, all of the above, this shows checks all the boxes. But my most favorite part of this show, among so much to chose from, is that we always end with a quip and fade out on Aubrey’s delightful cackle and Michael’s cheeky chuckle. 🙌 If perfection could be summed up in a podcast duo, these two would be it. I can’t hit like, 5 stars, or download fast enough on this show! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Mean girls
How do y’all feel at the end of the day for putting so much nastiness into the world? Yes, we should be wary of bold claims and deconstruct the diet industry but this goes too far. They play fast and loose with statistics and studies to selectively confirm their petty takes.

Genius way of opening up the conversation around weight
I adore both Aubrey and Michael and every single thing about this show. I have never struggled with weight myself, but I wanted to work on dismantling some of the bias that creeps in when you’re a thin woman (by chance, not by hard work or virtue!) who also works in healthcare. Wow, does this podcast deliver. I never realized how unsubstantiated many of my assumptions about diet & weight were. This podcast has been the most delightful, humbling, and humorous way to be proved wrong.

rampant misinformation
I’m a fat woman, and I was so excited for this. I’ve followed and loved Aubrey for years. But this podcast claiming to debunk science is filled with sloppy research, blatant cherry-picking, and misinformation all over the place — most of which comes from Michael. I had to stop listening.

Extremely entertaining but often fatlogicky
I’ve listened to almost all of the episodes and yes, I am subscribed. I like the picking apart of fad diets, and this pair is hilarious, but there are. So. Many. Instances of Aubrey insisting that it’s not unhealthy to be overweight or obese (they have a whole episode of her doing just that that’s particularly bad and full of misinformation) and that losing weight is ✨impossible✨Will continue listening, but there is def room for improvement.

Absolutely Delightful
I’ve been a fan of Michael Hobbes & his work for years now so it was a no-brainer to listen to this podcast. I was NOT expecting that, in less than 2 years, they would change my relationship with my body for the better. Aubrey & Mike have a wonderful way of covering serious topics with an air of levity without trivializing them. I often find myself literally laughing out loud, especially when Aubrey reacts to Mike. Michael, I’m still a fan, and Aubrey, I’m a new(ish) fan & you are an absolute delight!!

I listened to all the episodes and loved this podcast until the worms episode in July 2022. So many error and inaccuracies makes me question the other episodes I liked. Micheal does not have a stats, epi, or research background and these data episodes make that super obvious to ppl who do.

Hoped for better
Interesting topics, but also with bias. Could do without the heavy ego-driven banter from the hosts. And Everyone looks at food differently. The fact that we live in a country where some have too much and some have too little is the bigger problem. The Pollan review episode was a waste as was the calorie episode.

Positive Convos About Health
This podcast has been one of my favorites for over a year and a half! Michael & ESPECIALLY Aubrey have actually changed the way I think about my own weight, eating, and health & have helped me in my ongoing eating disorder recovery. It’s a delight to see new episodes come out and I often revisit back episodes when I’m craving a funny, positive, and lucid chat about topics that are very personal to me. Honestly, this podcast is the first piece of media I’ve found that talks about these topics in a way that isn’t stressful or triggering. I can’t recommend this one enough. Poorly researched and full of straw men
I really wanted to like this, and maybe I just picked a bad episode, but it completely misrepresents Pollan’s book. Had to turn off when Hobbes said (paraphrasing) “But if we subsidized broccoli instead, we’d just have high-fructose broccoli syrup.” Uh..that’s not what Pollan’s saying, and is a silly argument.

interesting, yet insulting
Based on the few episodes I have heard thus far, Worm Wars and … Calories, the info, the research, history etc. is interesting and informative. Whether I agree with your perspective, the issue I have is directed toward your delivery style. You come off as arrogant and smug with your sarcastic, self-aggrandizing tactics, which smacks of elitism laced with know-it-all rhetoric. I find that ironic in the context of your subject matter and perceived attempt to inform.

Cheap shots in “diet book deep dive”
There’s no point in spending an entire episode cackling and mocking a sad diet book from the 1980s. However flawed, however heteronormative, this book was very much reflective of many women’s experience in the 80s. Why not come at this from a place of empathy? And place it in context, comparing it to other books and articles of the period, and today. It would have been so much more powerful.

Aubrey is completely delusional
The podcast is funny and easy to listen to when Aubrey isn’t trying to convince you that being morbidly obese doesn’t negatively impact your health. Also, the episodes claiming that scientists don’t know why some people are fat are as misleading as studies referenced by snake oil salesmen.

Always great
Michael ditched his other show for this one, and sometimes I feel sad about it because I want to hear him talk about Lady Di and other 90s gossip, not things like de-worming. But if I am going to listen to anyone talk about de-worming for an hour while trying to fall asleep, it’s going to be him. A testament to his talent. Some good info but veering into self righteousness
I think that Mike and Aubrey bring some great and much needed criticism and context to a lot of the myths surrounding health and wellness, but can very easily get overly self righteous. They seem to forget that hindsight is 20/20, and are quick to apply current standards and attitudes to work that was brand new at the time. Also, they seem to have the attitude that any suggestion that being extremely obese is unhealthy is “toxic diet culture” and don’t differentiate between good faith efforts to promote healthy lifestyles, and nasty fat shaming.

No Mas
I enjoyed the early shows when they went after individuals that were peddling snake oil. It has gone downhill since. I found Aubreys take on fat shaming eye opening but now it seems she keeps trying to convince everyone that being extremely overweight is not unhealthy. They have since taken on larger subjects, like “calories”, but they are not scientists and are just nitpicking bits from studies to make whatever points they are pushing. So yeah, it started off promising but went to poop.

Motte and bailey
I listened to their episode on calories and was frustrated by their repeated use of motte and bailey arguments. Over and over they would make an uncontroversial claim about calories ("reducing caloric intake can slow your metabolism") and use that as a springboard for raging against anti-fat bias and making extreme claims like cutting caloric intake is futile and long-term weight loss is impossible. I got the sense that they believed any attempt to understand the nutrition in food must be a veiled ploy to shame fat people. I agree we shouldn't discriminate against heavy folks, but I found this podcast to be heavy on ideology and weak on science.

You probably need this podcast…
I have to say this is one of my very favorite shows of all time. I started listening after a friend recommended it to me, and it has forever changed the way I view weight, diet culture, and society’s obsession with health/ wellness on the whole. As a person who went to college for dietetics, and also used to workout and count calories obsessively, this show was exactly what I needed in my life as I got older and found it impossible to sustain the “perfect” body and fitness-junkie lifestyle I forced myself into in my 20’s. The hosts Michael and Aubrey are hilarious, insightful, and they manage to brighten my day pretty much without fail every time a new episode comes out. I have literally laughed out loud while listening to this show more times than I can count (often in public, lol) and it truly manages to strike the perfect balance between informative, funny, and “F#*% societal expectations”. I highly recommend this show to anyone who’s struggled (or known someone who’s struggled) with body image, disordered eating, and/ or the expensive and insidious lifestyle that the “wellness” industry uses to capitalize on peoples’ insecurity and shame around their bodies. Literally, my only complaint about this podcast is that there isn’t a new episode for me to binge to on the daily! Truly a 10/10.

I was wrong about Michael
I loved this podcast, despite having a few whiplash moments upon realizing that in their retelling of studies, occasionally, they were misinterpreting/misrepresenting research in a new way. The conversations were fun and I thought they were providing an important service. Then, I ventured on over to Michael Hobbes's Twitter. Ooooh boy. It's clear that he doesn't apply the same scrutiny and rigor to studies for issues that he supports. It was very weird seeing him promote anecdotal evidence and flawed studies that he would have eviserated on the pod if it was fitness literature. If it was a one off, I’d be able to overlook it. But, after poking around, I realized that this is a pattern. This hypocrisy was an unwelcome discovery and soured the pod for me. It’s truly unfortunate, because I found episodes led by Aubrey Gordon to generally be grounded and fact based, with an honest assessment of the literature. She seems much more willing to say we don’t know something, whereas Michael simply found another outlet to tell people what they are wrong about (according to him).

Do yourself a favor and listen
I remember growing up in diet culture to the point where I was thoroughly trained to hate my body, no matter its size. A nagging voice at the back of my mind has longed for the kind of respite and acceptance that would never be permitted in an industry that has everything to lo$e by all of us (or even some of us) deciding to let our bodies be how they are meant to be without the constant badgering to change sizes and shapes. A few years ago it hit me like a lightning bolt when I saw a huge cow in a field, munching away on grass. The cow is that size and shape because that is how it’s supposed to be, on a diet of grass and water. Poor thing didn’t know I was sizing her up and probably judging her, but that’s okay because all of that was about me, not her. Since I couldn’t hug her and tell her she’s just fine how she is, I decided to start doing that for myself. If the rest of society isn’t open to looking at any of these topics through a different lens, that’s on them. You don’t have to agree with every single thing the podcast covers, but just be open to the problem not always being you or your body and start to enjoy all the time you’ve freed up now that you aren’t disparaging yourself anymore. ❤️
