- Episode 69: Dr Lissa Rankin - Mind Over Medicine Part 1Question of the year: What is possible? This question opens you up to seeing life in a new way. Trying to think in new ways, feel in new ways, do things in new ways, and even relate in new ways. How has your journey been going so far? This question has forced me to look at some of the walls I’ve had placed around me to help me “feel” safe, accepted, and loved. It has forced me to understand the meaning of life in new ways. From an evolutionary cell biology perspective, Dr. Bruce Lipton discussed how single cells came together to form larger organisms that ultimately became humans because they saw the benefit of working together needing less energy and getting all their needs met. I know we are only 2 months in to our year of limitless, but I’m already feeling some big shifts. How about you? · Mind Over Medicine o Dr. Lisa Ranking is an MD who left her profession to study with all the alternative healing modalities and the research of each, as well. · Key messages: o Let go of control. Surrender. DEEP TRUST. Be proactive and let go. You will either willingly or unwillingly enter a place of uncertainty…worldviews will unravel…this is the space between stories o Unhealed trauma in your body’s system will hold you back from curing your body o The longest journey you will ever take is the journey from your head to your heart. § “There is no illness of the body apart from the mind.” – Socrates o “When it comes to the healing process, some crossover between the mystical and the physiological is at play, and that the common ground that connects the two seems to be the great and powerful minds, as well as what you might call the spirit or the soul.” o Every healing journey starts with a leap of faith… · Ch 1: Optimizing the Placebo Effect o “What we are today comes from our thoughts of yesterday, and our present thoughts build our life of tomorrow: our life is the creation of the mind.” – Dhammapada o Research shows: 40% of headaches, 50% of colitis, >50% of ulcer pain and pain in general, 40% infertility and even 71% of sham surgeries have all benefited from the placebo effect. Seem most effective with immune system issues, but nearly all clinical trials demonstrate the placebo effect. o Theory of why does placebo work: expectation, classical conditioning (white coat), rituals, nurturing care, other treatments while in studies, or disease resolves on its own. o Psychological stress and the sympathetic vs parasympathetic nervous system o Spontaneous Remission Project: 3,500 references. “proof that almost no disease is incurable” · Ch 2: The Surefire Way to Make Yourself Sick and Prevent Disease Remission o “People have the power to think themselves sick.” NOCEBO EFFECT. Anxiety à Illness o “The brain is perception, but the mind is interpretation.” o Subconscious mind and core beliefs. Why toxic positivity doesn’t work (all conscious mind i.e.5%) o “Somewhere in the intersection of hope, optimism, nurturing care, and full partnership with the empowered patient, a recipe for healing lies.” · Ch 3: The Healing Factor that can make all the difference o “The secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient.” o Research shows that “the right person to support your healing journey is crucial.” o Research shows optimism and positive interactions along with TRUST in a provider are key. o Love as the placebo…or the cure… Get a glimpse of it from others, but it is really about self-love…parasympathetic response is allowed to rest, digest, and heal.0 comments0
- Episode 68: Jim Kwik Limitless, Part 3Jim Kwik Limitless: Upgrade your brain, learn anything faster, and unlock your exceptional life. · Mindset (The WHAT); Motivation (THE WHY) · Methods (THE HOW) o Focus – “If you can’t concentrate you can’t manifest” It is something you can learn! § It isn’t your mind that is moving, it is your awareness (distraction, multitasking, clutter) § Instead: Breath, Do something that has been causing you stress, schedule time for distraction o Study – 4 Levels of Competence (Unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, conscious competence, and unconscious competence (practice makes progress) § Habits: employ active recall, employ spaced repetition, manage the stated you’re in, use your sense of smell (rosemary, peppermint, lemon), Music for the mind (Baroque – Handel, Bach), Listen with your whole brain, Intentional note-taking/use own words **Capture & Create (capture notes and create your impressions) o Memory – “serves as the foundation for every action you take now and… in the future” § Motivation to remember. Rote memorization takes too long and is inefficient. § Visualization; Associations; Emotion; Location (create stories out of the information you need to remember, crazier the better) § LOCI Method: pick 10 places in your room and walk through it in your mind with info o Speed Reading – average 150-200 words/minute. Reading efficiency: speed and understanding. § Speed reading is a skill and practice. Faster reading forces you to focus more. Read without the voice in your head saying the words. Use your finger (25-100% rate increase). Try counting while reading to drown out reading voice in head. o Thinking – Different types of intelligence (Dr. Howard Gardner, Harvard) § Spatial (pilots); Bodily-Kinesthetic (gymnast); Musical (Mozart); Linguistic (writers); Logical-Mathematical (Einstein); Interpersonal (therapists); Intrapersonal (Gandhi); Naturalistic (zoologists) § Learning Styles: Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic § Decision-making 40/70 Rule (Colin Powell). Don’t make a decision with less than 40% or more than 70% of the info. § EXPONETIAL THINKING – looking for the root cause of issue and thinking in a different box. “Creating a billion-dollar company is simply a matter of solving a $10-billion dollar problem.” Closing: What is one thing you will take away from the episode today? (Name them, What are the Facts (not opinions), New Belief). Negative emotions limit too. “Positive emotions broaden your sense of possibilities…allowing you to build new skills.” o How our values and meaning influence our behaviors and self-talk. o Ch 6 – 7 Lies of Learning § Intelligence is Fixed. “Intelligence is fluid.” § We only use 10% of our brains. This is laughably wrong. We use 100%, but some parts of this muscle are stronger. § Mistakes are Failures. “There is no such thing as failure. Only failure to learn.” § Knowledge is Power. Knowledge x Action = Power § Learning new things is very difficult. Once you learn HOW to learn, it is like any other process. § Criticism of others matters. “It’s not your job to like, love, or respect me. It’s mine.” § Genuis is born. Genius is made through deep practice. · Motivation (THE WHY) = Purpose x Energy x S^3 o Ch 7 – Purpose – a goal is what you want to do and the purpose is the reason why. Life purpose comes from passion (the rediscovered authentic self that has been buried beneath other people’s expectations). Purpose is relational. Starts with self (I AM) identity and self-love. § Means value – means to an end § End value – usually love, acceptance, safety. (We make decisions based on emotions). o Ch 8 – Energy – “Mental and physical vitality is the fuel needed to drive your action.” § Brain Foods, Exercise, Positive Self-talk, clean environment, positive peer group, new learning, stress management, sleep. o Ch 9 – Small Simple Steps (S^3) repeated lead to habits and goals. 3 questions to consider: § How strongly do you want to break the habit? How established is the problem? What are the consequences of breaking the habit? § Establishing a morning routine to start. o Ch 10 – Importance of FLOW state. We’re going to cover the last few chapters today and start Jim Kwik’s Limitless next. · Hypnosis – how can hypnosis help people? Ex. Dr. Albert Mason – using hypnosis to treat a 15yo boy for warts (congenital ichthyosis – lethal genetic disease) · Placebo – perception effect o Dr. Mosely 2002 – knee surgery vs fake surgery (can before to playing basketball w/ grandchildren) o Depression – U of Connecticut psychology professor Irving Kirsch (2002) “found that 80% of the effects of antidepressants, as measured in clinical trials, could be attributed to the placebo effect.” 6 leading antidepressant companies. o Langer (2009) – change in the perceptions of time can lead to physiological and mental “youthing” · Nocebo – negative suggestions that can damage health o Dr Meador – “He died with cancer, but not from cancer.” (1974) How can the mind override genetic programming? · Unconscious mind – drives 95% of body functioning (stimulus-response programs) · Conscious mind/ creative mind – drives 5% of body functioning (desires, dreams, aspirations) · Mind/ Emotion (energy) – activate or inhibit cell’s function-producing proteins (constructive/growth and destructive/protective interference) o “Simply thinking positive thoughts doesn’t necessarily lead to physical cures” o Reprogramming the subconscious mind is what is needed. - Episode 54: What to do?!I often talk with individuals trying to make a decision about some aspect of their life. Ex. Young adult picking their future path, parents deciding how to love and discipline, adults deciding how to best care for their elderly parent, individuals deciding how to better a relationship, teenagers deciding how to best share something impactful with their parents…the list goes on. A research study at Cornell University reports that we make 35K decisions per day. With all of these decisions, it can be really difficult to choose what to do. · What gets in the way of decision making? · Mental: Two main cognitive distortions- § Black and White Thinking. Ex. Right or wrong = accepted or not accepted. § Shoulding. Ex. Other’s expectations. · Emotional: often Fear of Failure (underlying both of these cognitive distortions). · What helps with indecision? · Calming the emotional brain to access the thinking brain. · Identity and indecision: § External – filter by what others think/feel/do or environment § Internal – decide who you want to be and use this as filter. · No blame. No shame. No guilt. Only learning. · New Perspective – looking at things from different angles How does understanding indecision help you LEAD Lucky? Who are the decision makers? Leaders! Gather all puzzle pieces, learn what you can, calm brain, filter through identity filter/business filter, and trust choice…right or wrong…good or bad outcome…know that you did the best you could with the information you had using this process. Death to things controlling your life… · The death of the physical is overcoming the physical urges/warning signals of the body. Overcoming the fight, flight, or freeze response in the nervous system. This allows you to be courageous yet not reckless. o Food – fasting. Overcome the body’s survival fear of starving. o Sleep – pushing past. Overcoming the body’s survival fear of not being able to function/have enough energy. IMPORTANT: I don’t suggest doing this ongoing because your physical body needs sleep, but we don’t want to be driven by the fear that if we don’t get a good night’s sleep, we will be a wreck the next day. o Stress Response – calming amygdala. Overcoming the psychological fear response, which is different than an actual threat. Discussed death of mental (pain)… o Whatever you can’t live without controls you…(sex). Need vs want. · Different from not listening to your body. Doing things very deliberately so you are not driven by fear. How does death to physical help you LEAD Lucky? You don’t have to be driven by the body and what it feels. IF you are driven by fear/stress, your emotional brain takes over and you cannot concentrate, focus, or think straight… As the leader, you need your thinking brain in tact because everyone is looking to you for the path forward. Unforgiveness ties you to the past version of yourself. § Trauma – I should have… Now you live as though you are the same person. You are not! § Unforgiveness of others. Still ties you to the past. Is it worth it? Drop the chains holding you to it. OR seek out help to do so. o Pessimism / hopelessness - Last episode (50) we discussed loosening the belief that you have to be pessimistic. Now it is time to allow yourself to hope. Pessimism is just a protective shield to help you “Feel” safe, but doesn’t actually protect you. IT buries you. Get out of the grave! o Disappointment – we have talked about having a plan to manage disappointment. Otherwise, you avoid or overcontrol. o FEAR – underlies all of these emotions. Protection and “feeling” safe. How does the death of emotions help you LEAD Lucky? as a leader, you need to be the trailblazer. Show what is possible. What mental constructs are holding you back from living the new reality? o Fear of Pain and death (mentally) § Accept that you will experience pain and the inevitable death, but there is no need to fear them. § Ex. Working with foster kids o Death of who you believe you are: I AM trapped. § Looked up 4 deaths on amazon: death, judgment, heaven, and hell (what if we look at this for the present within your mind… how are you dying to self, judging yourself, creating a present mental hell?) o Personalized mental deaths… § Ex. You want a better relationship with your kids… perhaps you need to be less critical. Loosening up your belief of the black and white. § Ex. You want a different career… perhaps you need to be courageous. Loosening your belief of what you HAVE to do or who you SHOULD be § Ex. You want to feel something different…be happier, more fulfilled… perhaps loosening the belief that you have to be pessimistic. Loosening your belief of what you think will change your feelings. · Birth of a new you: emptying out so that something new can fill the space. Choose wisely! - Episode 48: Lose YourselfIn previous episodes, we discussed the cost of transforming your life (most recently in Episode 44: Intention Giving). No one talks about the greatest cost of losing yourself (who you are/identity. What you do. Who you engage with, etc.) · Being a new version of you is hardest around those that you are most deeply connected. They expect you to be the same. We desire consistency – it builds trust. o Ex. Drinking with your friends. You decide that is not who you want to be…they re-evaluate themselves (am I ok?) and often take that out on you… · Losing yourself is also a LOSS. You will grieve the loss. Imagine your best friend dying. The entire year of firsts…it is the same thing. You have to decide, now that I am the new version of me, how do I do birthdays? holidays? get-togethers? How do I spend my time? o Ex. Going back to drinking… · Losing yourself can also be the most exciting thing though…don’t forget…don’t be afraid… o Eminem – Lose Yourself o Lose yourself in the music, the moment you own it, you better never let it go… You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to go, opportunity comes once in a lifetime. - Episode 45: Meaning of LifeWhat is one of the most important questions you could ever ask yourself? What is the meaning of life? Now, I’m not here to tell you the answer to this question because you are the only one that can answer this for yourself. It is your life! No one gets to tell you this answer. No one to blame then, either. · How does your answer to this question affect you? o Drives your motivationsàbeliefsàemotionsàbehaviors and relationships o Ex. Being happy. Loving others. Accumulating wealth. Living purely. · If you don’t have an answer to this question…or you do not believe there is meaning to life… o First, you will find something (most likely be happy. Way you go about that might be different) o If you didn’t have an answer: you will go about aimless without an answer to this question… · You don’t get to tell others what it is for them. No control only influence. Share your story. They decide what to take away. Same for you. · When basing the answer of the meaning of life on what you do versus who you are, things can get mixed up. o What you do changes over time…you will never have perfect behaviors/actions · Be careful to base your answer on something that stays constant. What you do changes… o Ex. Growth & learning through experience is consistent. How does your answer to “what is the meaning of life” help you LEAD Lucky? Allows you to prioritize your life better. If profit is the meaning of life versus guiding others to their best selves under your leadership then how you lead will be different.
