Disgraceful
How could a person write a story so obviously for her own benefit and at the detriment of a family so broken by history and mental illness? She even hints at acknowledging her selfish intent. But never apologizes and speculates the “story” will continue to be told despite her hand in exposing the truth. Hide your skeletons in the closet from this woman if she tries to befriend you.

The truth can be painful
That’s what I took from this amazingly compelling story. The royal family became royal, not by traditional birthright. But out of the sure necessity of survival. Their journey and individual stories are layered with complexity & fascination. And yet also utter heartbreaking. I left the pod feeling remorseful for the pain they’ve endured but hope that each family member finally got to experience peace. In whatever form it takes for them personally. This is a must listen from beginning to end.

You won’t be able to stop after the first episode!!!
I don’t typically gravitate toward journalism focused podcasts and this one immediately caught my attention in the first episode! I was hooked and couldn’t believe this wasn’t more popular. My boyfriend and I both listened to it in one straight shot and he was equally addicted! Absolutely captivating you won’t be able to stop listening to all the different perspectives and first-hand accounts. Extremely well done.

I listened to this podcast some time ago and was reminded of it recently. For some reason, I thought I had watched a movie about it, that’s how good it is - the show makes you feel like you are there. It’s storytelling at it’s best and one of the few podcasts I would listen to again

Trendy trash
Why are all mystery / true crime / human interest programs these days following this ridiculous trend where the presenter doesn’t stick to their role, but they have to insert themself as a protagonist? Example: “I read this thing ... and I didn’t know to think... so I thought some more... so I decided to look it up... so I looked it up... so here’s what I found out...” Does EVERYONE need to copy Serial? Please, just tell the audience the info, don’t turn everything into a egotist’s diary!

Good show. Random bad guests
I enjoy this show because the research is very well done & presented factually. I also enjoy most of the guests. That being said: the last guest wouldn’t let the host speak & was unable to articulate her thoughts & the nasal vocal fry hurt my ears. She was so incredibly annoying I had to turn it off. I guess it’s a case by case study so take the good with the bad. Call me Karen I guess.

There’s magic in stories
Though only three episodes long, it seemed like I spent years listening to this story. I felt the narrators yearning to believe in this fairytale on earth, and her heartbrokenness at the history of it all. I wept at the end not only for a friendship, but for a unity this tale brought to the people around it. Thank you so much for this.

Interesting story but I felt like the author was trying to fillllll timmmmme with her........... loooong pauses............... Also frustrating that she didn’t fill in more of the gaps in the story through additional research: where did the “8 karat diamonds” come from, how was the “story” from the time the family moved to the train station begun?

Poorly written
I was shocked this was done by the New York Times. Her narration and writing was filled with forced emotion. It was uncomfortable to listen to. She went to his unmarked grave and wrote done in her notebook, “He was lost in a sea of the dead?” It was pathetic and her sad attempt to move the audience was disgusting. Journalists are there to report and observe, but he genuinely bonded to her and she completely used him, exploiting him and his family to bolster her career when the time was convenient for her. The best she could do was bring him McDonald’s and then abandon him? I found it interesting when she said, “why don’t you leave this place?” And he replied “who would help me?” That was clearly a cry for help. To see someone living in such perils and knowing you’re his only contact with the outside world, the only person he confides in and she did nothing. Her disappointing lack of humanity was disgraceful.

Interesting but upsetting
Interesting to listen to, but I grew more and more resentful of this reporter. This family is clearly traumatized and lived horribly to protect this secret. Reporter clearly used this man’s loneliness to dig out the family story and post it for the world to see. I think they crossed a line when she went to visit family in England. This man did not want to say and the reporter pushed it.

PLEASE read “colonizing in podcast form”
That reviewer said it all, but feel like it should be fairly obvious in that it’s called “jungle man...”— JUNGLE MAN. How could you possibly make it clearer to yourself that you’re cashing in on weird and dehumanising mystical savage thing throughout here instead of telling a persons well (and ethically!) researched story or crafting an insightful piece of journalism? Also on the disingenuous / condescending, please tell me you’re mispronouncing “scion” because you don’t know how to say it? Not because you’re aping a “cute” accent?

despicable
the way this “journalist” describes india is nothing short of contemporary orientalism, and her treatment of the indian family at the center of this story, a family whose history is rooted in the trauma of partition and the consequences of colonialism, as nothing more than an artifact to be cursorily studied and then disposed of is despicable. the new york times’ hypocrisy-pandering to the superficial moral sensibilities of the white american elite while violently stealing and misrepresenting the lives of brown people-is stunning, but far from unusual for this publication.

Colonizing in Podcast Form
At first, my mind was open to this story but as it continued I found myself resenting the storyteller for her clear exploitation of this desperate and vulnerable family. On the pretense of friendship, she used this man -humiliated him and denied him his only truth and comfort- for what a dumb podcast that western viewers listen to at the gym?! I found this to be a disturbing listen. The disbelief of western unimaginative culture has always exploited India and our rich traditions. Your surprise indicates your ignorance of our culture. The reliance on mostly white voices to narrate is a form of colonization. Although I appreciate your discussion of partition, why not discuss the current efforts for reparations that India has been asking for? It is sad that a subjected people were used to liberate the another people while they remained unfree and forced to give their meager resources away. It would have been more interesting for her to use this story as an allegory for the creation of Israel - another event occurring in 1948 with the Partition of Palestine based on an imagined homeland. Thanks always NY times for never being on it!

Not cold
I didn’t get the impression she was cold to him or pretending to be his friend, he was the one, afterall who chose to stay in the palace when she tried to coax him out. There was literally never a moment in the story where someone laughingly talked about his possible suicide nor any implication of such which some reviewer wrote, so I don’t know where he got that and if there was someone to be mad at why not the other player mentioned at the end. The main problem I had was that end, too abrupt, are there really only 3 episodes or am I not getting the rest on my device for some reason?

Irresponsible
I don’t care if it’s a good story, inserting yourself into someone’s life and pretending at friendship with such cold remove is unconscionable. The suicide of this terribly isolated man wasn’t just predictable, it was predicted by the narrator laughingly before she exited his life with false promises to be in touch. Recordings of his pleas for help getting connected to others make it shockingly clear that this project was the lark of a selfish professional who sees herself as above the humanity she covers in her reporting.

Short but great
A very well designed short podcast with an agreeable narrator who ties up the ends succinctly and beautifully. I found myself truly feeling for the “Prince” in the end, captivated by his incredible demeanor despite such a bizarre life of tremendous loss. This story touches on humility and human connection, how we need more of it, without spelling it out. It similarly sheds light on manipulation’s life changing stronghold that causes irreversible mental health issues and the assumptions western society casts upon it, a topic that deserves deeper consideration and proactive thoughtfulness. This story is in fact a story, yet gracefully turns into an homage. Prepare to feel a lot while you listen to this.

The human cost of hundreds of missing cultures
I was profoundly moved. Pausing, replaying and pondering over these three episodes for hours. This podcast is difficult to explain; we are shown a glimpse of human suffering through an unusual window. Descendants of a proud family continue to struggle with displacement. A mother’s fight for legitimacy is remembered and... woven through this narrative is a tale of royalty, diamonds, carpets, parasites, filth, friendship and the sorrow of humanity. We hear just enough of the journalist and just enough of the main characters. It was tedious and brief. I loved it.

Great story!
This podcast tells a fascinating story and kept me interested throughout. It is noticeably well arranged and the team used an excellent combination of VoiceOver, interviews and b-roll audio to keep my brain engaged. I find some journalism podcasts get to be boring bc the storytelling is subpar. They did a great job of keeping me engaged. Google the podcast title for images of the family and the property :) I think its ridiculous that somebody stated that the ads hinder their ability to listen to this while they are going to sleep… maybe they need to listen to meditation music rather than a podcast before they complain that it doesn’t perfectly fit into their sleep patterns. Or rather, leave a pointless review on their own brain or their own sleep issues in a journal that only they see. SMH

Great storytelling but the ads are too loud
I would love to finish this but I listen to podcasts to help me relax and get to sleep. The ads are too loud and jarring when I am trying to relax so it is unfortunately off of my list.

Wow
I’m both saddened and fascinated by this story. It’s so tragic that so many lives were ripped apart by the partition, by someone that had never even been to their country.

Captivating story~
A story of people displaced and reaching for a life gone by and the sadness that stole their present and the message to us all within the castle in the jungle.

Better pronunciation of Hindi/Urdu needed
It is really frustrating that the narrator and the other white people who made this podcast did not try to learn to say basic Hindi/Urdu words properly. For example, how hard is it to say begum (pronounced bay-gum not beg-gum)? The minimal effort in pronunciation of Hindi/Urdu words is extremely distracting though, and if your team is going to be making podcasts about brown people, you need to do the work required to be culturally sensitive. If this was a podcast using French words I’m sure the narrator would pronounce them all perfectly. Brown cultures deserve the same respect. With that said, it’s an interesting story and I’m excited to continue to listen. And I do thank you for making a story about a minority culture.

beautiful, sorrowful, incredible
I took this podcast series with me on a long walk. I ended up sitting on a bench and crying at the heartache and so moved by a mother’s outrage and transformation of her reality. i feel connected to Cyrus as if I knew him. I gasped at the words “ I promised to call him”—amazing storytelling and journalism. I’m glad you walked into the forest in the middle of the city by yourself.

Fantastic storytelling
More short audiobook than New York Times reporting, and I absolutely loved it start-to-finish! It was an incredibly fascinating story made even better due to the production detail - whether it was original recordings woven in or sound effects / music. More like this please!

A podcast that not only informs the mind but warms the heart
“Think, every day, something no one else is thinking. Do, every day, something no one else would be silly enough to do. It is bad for the mind to be always part of unanimity.” — Christopher Morley

- Jungle Prince Dec 23 · 31m Chapter 1: The Railway StationThe story passed for years from tea sellers to rickshaw drivers to shopkeepers in Old Delhi. In a forest, they said, in a palace cut off from the city, lived a prince, a princess and a queen, said to be the last of a Shiite Muslim royal line. Some said the family had been there since the British had annexed their kingdom. Others said they were supernatural beings. It was a stunning and tragic story. But was it real? On a spring afternoon, while on assignment in India, Ellen Barry got a phone call that sent her looking for the truth. In Chapter 1, we hear of a woman who appeared on the platform of the New Delhi railway station with her two adult children, declaring they were the descendants of the royal family of Oudh. She said they would not leave until what was theirs had been restored. So they settled in and waited — for nearly a decade.0 comments0
