This is the best podcast I’ve listened to. So much wonderful information on Alfred Hitchcock and how this movie came to be. Also on the actors and the different personalities. Ireally loved it.

Chilling, Thrilling, and oh so Fulfilling
As a huge fan of Hitchcock, PSYCHO is a film that’s taken a while to truly grow on me. It’s only been within the past few years that the classic thriller has felt like what I always hoped it felt like. I needed to grow with it, reflect on it. Grasp how much it truly changed the industry. After reading about the film, watching documentaries on it, I was happy to discover that there was a limited series going in-depth on the history, production, and reception of Hitchcock’s work of genius. Mark Ramsey’s voice is ideal for the chilling and well-researched narrative he weaves over the course of a few hours. Never being one to go too far into serial killer narratives, the first episode on Ed Gein was particularly disturbing. And I mean that as a compliment. I loved every bit of the show and I can’t wait to listen to the other INSIDE looks that Ramsey has done for Wondery.

I enjoyed this podcast immensely!! I’ve always been fascinated by Hitchcock, and Psycho is my favorite production of his. I loved the history and little trivia about the film. Can’t wait for another season into another classic? Or maybe another Hitchcock film? 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

So so good!
This was a very entertaining podcast from the 3 min trailer to the finish of Ep 6. Any fan of Hitchcock and/or true crime will appreciate this podcast. Oh, and the narrator sounds like a bit of a psycho himself (and that’s a compliment to him AND a complement to the story).

Background music is unnecessary and far too loud
I listen to podcasts while at work so I have to wear headphones. I'm only on the first episode but the audio is inconsistent and the background music is far too loud, often coming close to drowning out the narration. If the subsequent episodes are like this, I won't be finishing the series. And the parody of "The Night Before Christmas" poem twisted to describe murder(s) committed by Ed Gein is awful. This could have been a really good podcast but it's over-dramatic and stuffed with conjecture that is unrelated to the topic.

Terrible
By way of qualification, I love podcasts and audiobooks, in particular Wondery-produced podcasts. Moreover I drive often (and far) so I’m always looking for new content. That being said, this is why you should mos def avoid those one. First, it’s just not particularly interesting with the exception of the first episode. That was good and macabre and compelling. But the real reason you should pass is because the narrator, who I think is also the writer and producer (show runner?) reads in the most affected and annoying way. He pauses between words constantly for emphasis but, like any other technique, he over does it to the point where my wife and I were annoyed beyond measure. For awhile we even talked to each other like him. Me: Do you need...to...pee? Her: I think I’m...ok. It’s ridiculous. On the other hand, there were times when he’s simply reading bumpers or promos and he’s soooo much better. I wish he starts reading like that as he continues his career.

Great story, weird narration
Loved the story and information in the podcast. But the narrator told it in a very weird way that was distracting. The stories are weird enough without needing to act like the podcast is taking place in a haunted house.

The. Pauses. Are. Too. Much.
The actual content of this podcast is okay. I wouldn’t really say it’s a deep dive of Psycho tho. The thing that is most bothersome is the pauses the narrators makes for dramatic effect. Any bit of dramatization has been absolutely lost because they feel the need to dramatically pause before the ending of almost every single sentence. It’s so bad and frustrating to hear that it compelled me to write my first podcast review in over four years of listening. Also, the couple spots where the story takes us through dream sequences, why?? This isn’t a work of fiction, and even if these dreams are documented it is a colossal waste of time. Every episode I’m left disappointed that the interesting parts of the episode weren’t what I was left remembering.

Not so great
Classic movie, and the narrator clearly has a passion for it, but he doesn’t let the great story tell itself, he has to add spooky music, spooky re-enactments, pointless spooky....pauses, and so on. Too much. He does sound exactly like Jeff Daniels, however.

Decent story but SO dramatic
A lot of good content and an interesting story but all the suspenseful music in the background and dramatic pausing made it unbearable to keep listening after episode 3. “You could hear a pin.......*suspenseful sound effect*.....*long pause*.......drop.” Get on with it! A real bummer because the podcast could have been so much more enjoyable without the theatrics.

Hitchcock would be ashamed....
Oh, honey, your writing is not interesting enough to warrant the hundreds of thousands of dramatic pauses. You’re talking about the master of suspense himself, couldn’t you have studied up a bit? The music would better suit a podcast about American Horror Story or the Human Centipede, cheap thrills... but not the greatest horror movie of all time. Sigh, white boys.... will you ever get sick of the sound of your own voices? Because I am.

i just listened to both episodes, thinking they would be much like the Inside Jaws and Inside Psycho podcasts. Now, drowning in my own tears, sitting next to a pile of used tissues, i see i was wrong. The other 2 were immensely entertaining and informative. Another absolute stellar production by Wondery. As a long time film buff, this gives you a lot of great history mixed with a fun, roller coaster of a ride. Close to perfection
This podcast series has everything a true crime/horror movie buff like me could want. There is an episode dedicated to Ed Gein. Then the series gets into the making of Psycho, both the book and the film. I was delighted by the anticdotes about Hitchcock and Anthony Perkins, and the podcast even talks about the influence of Saul Bass and Bernard Hermann in the making of the film too (I am so glad Bass and Hermann's contributions were not ommitted). My only complaints are the little tacked-on faux ending that seemed unnecessary and out of left field. Also, as others mentioned, the sound effects are a little corny. Just stick to telling a good stories, and if possible, integrate some of the source material (via sound clips, interviews, etc) into the production instead. All that being said, I can't wait to dip into Inside Jaws and Inside The Exorcist. Thank you to all who are involved in this production!

Just fantastic.
I first saw Psycho at far too tender an age, watching round the stairwell corner when my folks thought I was asleep, at the advent of home video rental. Obviously my parents have great taste, to have hunted down Psycho in the pre-chain-rental-store days of yore. I was similarly introduced to John Waters films (Multiple Maniacs was my first) around that same corner wall, quiet as a mouse... though I now know mice are really quite loud, & they knew I was there & just trusted me not to mention any of it to Grandma. Psycho altered me. It jumped in to my consciousness sometime around kindergarten... Precocious developing mind, already far too worldly for anyone's good... But Psycho shook me. It changed everything. Mother still lives behind my eyes, waiting for the right moment in the dark to turn around and reduce me to a sobbing 4 year old. But Norman stole my heart. This sweet, awkward man-boy munching candy with those big expressive hands, he grabbed me by the nurture-and-protect instinct & has held on ever since. At the same moment I both feared Mother more deeply than anything I'd ever encountered, even in the midst of the early 80s slasher-fest, AND I became Mother. I had this enormous shift in consciousness, as a little girl, where I, in an instant -- exactly as long as it takes a less-pretty sister to turn around an old rocking chair -- learned to absorb & cherish my monsters. That's gotten me through my life. Miscarriages, being widowed young, losing home after home, all the terrifying things that happen in a life, I had a measure of control over the fear these caused thanks to Mother and Norman. I have the scariest things inside me, & because I've loved them & cared for them, they'll help me when I need strength. Psycho was enormously formative to my entire psyche, & I greedily eat up anything and everything about it. This is such a fabulous little podcast. The ambiance is perfectly tuned, the storytelling is both accurate & evocative. The personalities of the players are all beautifully realized, right through to poor old Eddie Gein, without becoming the caricatures they've all been reduced to in popular media recently. That's the most important part for me. Hitch has been getting a character beating lately, without being around to defend himself, & it's frustrating. He wasn't JUST a genius, JUST a driving taskmaster, JUST a glutton, etc. This particular slice of his time in Hollywood doesn't reduce anyone, even when they're only briefly mentioned. So well done & a truly delightful experience.

Starts Out Great Then….
I am a huge film buff and a huge Robert Bloch fan (as well as a Hitchcock junkie) so I was jazzed to listen to this series. It starts out great - the use of sound effects is very effective in the Ed Gein first episode but sadly I found as the series went along it just got weaker and weaker. Now maybe he could not get clearance on these - but why couldn’t they play the REAL ads and commercials for PSYCHO that Hitch made? Couldn’t they get the actual audio from the 33rd Academy Awards or his AFI Tribute? To just have the Narrator do ALL the voices became rather tiresome and I could not believe he did the “fake dream” trope not once but TWICE! And for all real Hitchcock fans, we know he never won an Oscar so I found the long drawn out “dream” sequence he was announced as Best Director just ineffective and hokey. There is some fascinating info in this podcast series but overall I found it rather lacking.

Perfect Podcast!
I just binged this over the last few days. I didn't intend to binge, but it was impossible for me to put it down! I found myself driving around a little bit extra, and taking the long way home from work just so I could listen a little bit extra. This podcast is extremely well done. If you happen to be a movie buff like me, there's not a whole lot of new info on the making of Psycho that I didn't already know. But it's all presented in such a thoughtful and haunting way that it still had me on the edge of my seat, hungry for the next episode. The beauty of it is you don't have to be a movie buff to enjoy this however. It has a little bit of everything for everyone. It's part true crime, part old time radio drama, part personal experience, with a sprinkling of old Hollywood tabloid, all told like a ghost story around a camp fire. The episodes are the perfect length as well. A perfect podcast!

Wasted potential
The making of Psycho has so much potential to make an interesting podcast. However, this podcast decided to change the story from factual to a dramatized version of events. You can't tell what is fact and what has been fictionalized for dramatic purposes. Instead of acting out events, just tell the actual story of what happened.

Well done, a little overly dramatic.
There's a lot of good stuff here for fans of the movie and/or of Hitchcock himself. It's hindered a little bit by the desire to make things too dramatic at times (way too much loud incidental music, long sequences describing Hitchcock's nightmares filled with purple prose). There's still enough good here to make it worthwhile (especially the final episode focusing on Hitch's post-Psycho career), so grab it if you're a fan.

Mother Would Be Pleased
When a podcast series is this well researched and produced it is easy to give it a 5-star rating, but calling it a masterpiece could be taking it too far... This podcast *is* a masterpiece though... "Inside Psycho" is a Must-Listen for any fan of Hitchcock, Psycho, or the thriller genre. Wondery takes us from the very beginning, young Ed Gein becoming the serial killer, to the very end, Hitchcock's death. The respect and sympathy shown toward Hitchcock throughout this series is never condescending or insincere. As a fan, I appreciate that. I also appreciate the rather in depth research accomplished here. I've always known Hitchcock's "Psycho" had a wide reaching influence on thrillers and horror films since its premiere, but was still surprised by certain modern day nods — and now I need to rewatch a few films to catch them! Perfect for binge listening or showing some "Norman Bates biding his time"-type serial self restraint, Wondery's "Inside Psycho" is a touching — and sometimes disturbing — love letter to Alfred Hitchcock and his ever enduring film. Bravo!

Fascinating and Entertaining
This is a truly wonderful podcast. Recommended for any fan of film, horror, or generally good storytelling. The first episode will definitely appeal to true crime fans (and is truly horrific), but the other episodes focus on the story behind one of the greatest horror movies of all time. I would love to hear the team tackle another classic horror movie. Possibly The Exorcist? Great stuff, love it.

Such fun
This is so much fun to listen to. The backstory of Psycho, how Hitchcock leveraged his career to make it, how studios and critics predicted its failure. And the production makes it--soundscape that would make Hitchcock proud.

A good listen
This was an interesting inside look at the making of psycho, though the description was a little misleading. It made it sound like a bunch of mysterious, unexplainable phenomena happened on set, but it was mostly just Hitchcock's insecurities about making the movie and the obstacles he had to overcome in making it. Still an enjoyable listen, but not quite what I expected.

Top Notch
We have been running the podcast Earbud Theater for the past four years. After diving into HUNDREDS of different podcasts, we can honestly say that Inside Psycho is one of the best, most unique projects we've ever heard. If you're a film buff, you're going to appreciate the deep dive. If you're a fan of Audio Drama, you are going to appreciate the immersive soundscape. This gets five stars across the board for storytelling, craft, and pure entertainment.

Loved listening to this podcast. Not only is the narrator great to listen to but they throw in sound affects and a little radio play that takes it a step above. I'm very eager to see what else they have made.

well researched but...
Certainly worth listening to, but there's not much new here for true fans of the classic film. The author/reader doesn't do himself any favours by reading it himself - he is not a performer and his flat delivery doesn't help his efforts. In the last one, he states that Ed Gine was the inspiration for Hannible in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, when in fact he was the inspriation for the killer, "Buffalo Bill".

Gripping and Well Made
The beauty of the series is that while everyone knows of the movie, probably very few know the story behind the production. I especially enjoyed the pace and production of the story telling. Thank you for not doing "Hitch" with an English accent.

Thank you, Mother.
A loving tribute to a landmark of cinema history and it's auteur, the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. Aficionados of Hitch's oeuvre will enjoy this podcast. It would be great if the producers of this podcast would also do the same for Vertigo, Rear Window, North by Northwest and Hitch's other masterpieces. Kudos to Mark Ramsey et al!

Suspenseful and Intense
I loved the storytelling and production quality of this series, which connected a lot of different angles of the filmmaking process, before, during, and after. Made me want to watch the movie again! It might have benefited from some additional voice talent as one actor seems to carry it on his own, and the ending was a bit weird, but I was LOVING this. Best surprise of a podcast in a long time. Good work.

This "deep dive" into Hitchcock's most famous film is superb. The research, writing, music, SFX, and narration are all great. I echo the thoughts of others regarding the sound issues of this podcast, but I'd also like to state that in several instances, information is changed from what actually occurred to be more dramatic, which invalidates the entire thing; that's the reason I stopped listening after the first episode.

Making the Film...Not Gore
Giving three stars today because the first episode took such a sensationalist approach to the Ed Gein background. I listen to true crime podcasts and Hollywood/movie podcasts, but the first episode trailed a bit too much into gruesome for the sake of gruesome. Hoping the episodes on the film itself will be more balanced. I have enjoyed "Hollywood and Crime" and their approach to the more gruesome aspects of the Balck Dahlia murders. Will review again after I hear more.

When 90-year-old Laurence Pilgeram drops dead on the sidewalk outside his condo, you might think that’s the end of his story. But, really, it’s just the beginning. Because Laurence and others like him have signed up to be frozen and brought back to life in the future. - Introducing SUSPECT: Vanished in the SnowFor more than three and a half decades, the disappearance of 12-year-old Jonelle Matthews was a mystery – a riddle neither authorities nor her family members could solve. The residents of her cloistered Colorado hometown had scoured every inch of prairie. Jonelle’s face had been on milk cartons nationwide. Even the President of the United States had appealed to the public for help. Still, every lead had fizzled. Every person of interest had turned out to be a dead end. Then, in 2019, Jonelle’s remains were unearthed near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. With the discovery came a troubling new question: Had the truth been hiding in plain sight the entire time? Was the man who couldn’t stop obsessing over Jonelle’s disappearance also the person who took her? From Campside Media and Wondery comes season two of SUSPECT. Former CNN reporter Ashley Fantz and executive producers Matthew Shaer and Eric Benson (Suspect, Over My Dead Body) dig into one of the most mind-bending cold cases in modern history, in an attempt to separate fact and fiction, compulsion from guilt, and true-crime fandom from a motive for murder. Hey Prime Members, you can binge all 6 episodes of SUSPECT: Vanished in the Snow ad-free on Amazon Music. Download the Amazon Music app today: Wondery.lnk.to/I_SuspectS20 comments0
- Interview with Psycho documentary creator Rob GalluzzoTime for a deep dive into all things “Psycho” with Rob Galluzzo, Sr. Editor at Blumhouse Productions, co-host of the SHOCKWAVES podcast, and creator of the documentary “The Psycho Legacy.” Rob and host Mark Ramsey swap some stories, including things that didn’t make the cut for Inside Psycho and tidbits about other films in the series. - She Wouldn’t Even Harm a FlyPsycho fever overtakes America, and Alfred Hitchcock is suddenly a very rich man. And with this stunning success comes one haunting fear: What will I do for an encore? That question plagues Hitchcock for the rest of his career, through only six more films, a humiliating defeat at the Academy Awards, the specter of young directors vaulting past the old master, and a final appearance to accept a life achievement award that’s too little and too late. Meanwhile, critical admiration for Psycho grows, and the film’s legacy spawns sequels and remakes and a web of pop culture signposts, even today. We leave you in the cellar of terrifying old house on a lonely hill. Do you hear something? Support us by supporting our sponsors!0 comments0
- Shock and AweHitchcock’s nightmares haunt him as he readies Psycho for release. He tussles with the censors to keep his precious shower scene - the one which does or does not contain nudity, depending on which censor’s opinion you’re listening to. Hitch maps out an elaborate and unprecedented publicity strategy and in the process reinvents the way America goes to the movies. He suffers a rash of scathing reviews from big name critics, one of whom calls Psycho “a very minor work.” Then, Psycho opens - and the world will never be the same. Hitchcock marvels at the lines around every block all across the country. Perhaps his fears were all wrong...or maybe this will be the huge success from which he will never recover. Support us by supporting our sponsors!0 comments0
- Men Do Kill Nude Women You KnowIt’s the inside story of the legendary shower scene, from the nudist on set, to Janet Leigh’s unending efforts to maintain some decency, to the answer to the longstanding question: Do you actually see the knife disappear into a body or not? We review the sounds of stabbing, the practical jokes that had everyone in stitches (except Janet Leigh), the novel introduction of a toilet to an American movie, the did-she-or-didn’t-she blink moment, and the very real possibility that the entire shower scene could have played in silence. Plus, you meet the famous child actor from the 1950’s who helped glue hairs into the head of Norman’s mother’s corpse. All the while, Hitchcock is convinced that the picture he’s making is, in a word, awful. Support us by supporting our sponsors!0 comments0
- Time To ShootWhat do you do when your studio hates your next picture? If you’re Alfred Hitchcock, you put up your own money and risk everything on it. Psycho was a movie everybody in town said couldn’t get made - it would be the movie that would ruin Hitchcock’s career, they said. Or would it? Hitchcock casts his Norman Bates and his “perfectly ordinary” Marion Crane. Hear how the voice of Norman’s mother evolves from a series of hilarious celebrity prank calls, how Hitch navigates the performance of one actor he called “the stiff.” Then, he swears the cast and crew to secrecy, and production begins on the biggest bet of Hitchcock’s career. Support us by supporting our sponsors!0 comments0
- Bloch and HitchcockWhen a struggling writer, Robert Bloch, discovers the story of a strange man in Wisconsin who killed and mutilated his victims, he transforms it into a story about the twisted relationship between a man and his mother: Psycho. Later, he realizes his fictions come closer to the dark truth than he ever could have imagined. That’s when his book is optioned by an anonymous Hollywood buyer for next to nothing. That buyer turns out to be Alfred Hitchcock. We meet Hitch on his deathbed, rewind through key moments, and end with Hitch savoring only one of the 2,400 submissions his office had reviewed. This would be his next picture: Psycho. Support us by supporting our sponsors!0 comments0
- The Butcher of PlainfieldA mild and meek man who was unusually attached to his domineering mother. That’s the story of Ed Gein, who murdered numerous middle-aged women in and around Plainfield, WI in the 1950’s, and whose story inspired the character of Norman Bates. The story of Psycho begins in a dingy, remote cabin, where Gein collected bits and pieces of his subjects and fashioned them into chairs, lampshades, or worse. All his victims were chosen because they reminded him of his mother. When he was buried, this was engraved on the headstone beside his: “Augusta Gein: Mother.” Gein’s story is a chilling beginning to one of the most famous stories in movie history. - Introducing Inside PsychoA deep dive into the mysterious and peculiar happenings that occurred during the filming of the legendary film Psycho.
