Brilliant
This is one of the best podcasts I’ve come across in quite a while. I paint for a living and Chris and Joe help break up the monotony of menial labor. I’ve also made the mistake of listening to the podcast when I’m out in public, causing me to look like a crazy person because I’m just laughing to myself. So word of warning for all future listeners. I’ve already listened to all of the available episodes and now look forward to each new addition. But yeah, overall a phenomenal podcast that is absolutely worth checking out.

Educational and entertaining
I’ve been watching and listening to the podcast since the Saw marathon and loved it. They always come up with interesting ways to survive (usually through pointing out how trash the characters are) but I also get to learn about the aspects of movies that make them unique and good that I wouldn’t be able to put a finger on myself

Very fun podcast
Started with one of the marathon (as most listeners did) and continued from there and it’s been amazing to listen to. Thanks for making a funny podcast about survival.

I’m a fairly new listener and it seems the host add a new dynamic in each episode. They intelligently and hilariously dissect formulaic horror movie plots. A great treat for horror movie fans

Thoughtful. Thought-provoking, even.
This is probably the most intelligent conversation you’ll find currently happening about horror movies, all with an acknowledgement that most of them are “rubbish.” But escapism is gold these days, and I appreciate the detailed dissection of the worlds created in these films, as well as a thorough examination of their logic (or lack thereof). Joe and Chris are thoughtful in their discussions and sensitive to the unsavory subjects that often arise in the plot lines. They actually have something to say - a refreshing change from most of what’s out there.

A Hidden Gem
Holy wow this podcast needs to be heard by more people. It’s as good as The Flop House and HDTGM, if that tells you anything. Two hilarious & charming brits dissect horror movies and tell you how to survive them. Fans of comedy movie podcasts, this is your next binge.

Hi Joe and Chris! My name is Rebecca, and I live in Orlando (currently subjugated by the mouse, send help). Just wanted to say I found your podcast about a month ago and have since listened to e v e r y episode! Went through some major bumps in the road and am now living alone, but having you guys and your natural, sweet banter while I write and draw makes the transition feel a lot less lonely. It breaks my heart that you didn’t like Hellraiser :( It’s a childhood favorite. But your praise of Midsommer made it better :p. Thanks for all you do. It might just be a fun way of two old friends hanging out every week, but the cast means things to people, and we appreciate all your effort.

More than worth your time
I’ve only found this podcast recently, but at this point I’ve listened to at least 2 dozen episodes and have enjoyed every one of them. The two hosts, Chris and Joe, play off each other well and balance the comedic and analytical elements of their conversations beautifully. Whether I’m looking for some noise to distract me, or a way to interact with a movie on a deeper level, Joe and Chris never fail to bring a smile to my face. The show is quite funny, often insightful, and always leaves me looking forward to the next episode.

My favorite podcast
Leaving five stars because that is the language of love after all. Great to listen to whether you have watched a movie they are covering or have never heard of it. Great chemistry between the two podcasters that manage to keep the conversation entertaining no matter the movie. A genuine pleasure to experience.

Lucky find!
I stumbled across this podcast gold, and quickly ate up all the films It covers. Now I’ve got to watch a bunch of movies so I can listen to more episodes without spoilers.. Both hosts are refreshingly likeable, and are able to cover even bad movies in an entertaining way. You’ll get a recap, review, survival tips... and if you’re really lucky a quiz.

So much sauce I can’t help but get lost.
When I first was getting into horror movies I ate up all content I could find on YouTube. This eventually led me to the Saw marathon that you guys posted in one of your first uploads in the visual medium. Following this I immediately went to Spotify and watched about 5 successive episodes. I was hooked immediately and encourage you guys to keep up the good work. Ps. Review the People Under the Stairs and the remainder of the Evil Dead trilogy.

Underrated As Hell
I’ve been listening to HtS for a couple months now and it’s insane how underrated this podcast is! Sure, you could listen to the same 5 podcasts talk about the same thing every week, but I had never heard of a podcast talk about surviving horror films before. As a huge horror fan, I find Joe and Chris very entertaining because you can tell that they are huge horror fans as well. Keep up the good work guys! I wish you both wild success and recognition for the great podcasters you are! Love, Marissa ❤️

This has become probably my favorite podcast. The guys are so down to earth and are easily relatable. I love their vast selection of movie choices. I wish I hadn't discovered them so late because I would have loved to comment on so many of their reviews. I can't wait for their next new episode.

Hilarious & original discussion about films
An original and truthful insight into the mind of a viewer while watching a film. I feel like listening to these guys brings the interior monologue of what I've thought when I've watched any of these films. They ask all of the right questions, and provide a place for the listener to process through what they've watched, while giving the freedom to disagree and agree with what they've said. I'm thankful that they have the time to sit down and think about all of the parts that I may have missed in the film, and their funny jokes and witty remarks offer easy listening. Definitely worth subscribing to!

It's episode 267...and kill a few people, they call you a murderer. Kill a million and you're a conqueror. Cliffhanger (1993) follows a team of mountain rescue rangers, led by the inexplicably muscly and capable Gabe, as they become mixed up in a group of thieves' plot to steal $100m from a US Treasury flight. With suitcases of money scattered across the Colorado Rockies, it's a race against time for Gabe to stop the nefarious Qualen and rescue his mountain climbing buddies. We discuss a post- Die Hard 90s schlock masterpiece, ask how well it communicates the terror of high places, break down some slightly surprising gender politics and do a deep dive into the question of whether or not Stallone can actually act at all. All of which leads to one question: H o w w o u l d y o u s u r v i v e ? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Your friend just had the costliest funeral ever. It's episode 266...and I've never seen anything so disgusting in all my life . Scanners (1981) introduces us to Cameron Vale, a down-on-his-luck vagrant who unintentionally causes a seizure in a woman using the power of his mind. Captured by the mysterious ConSec, Cameron is brought into the murky world of Scanners, people with unusual telepathic and telekinetic abilities, only to find himself under threat from the nefarious Revok, a man unafraid to use his abilities to produce head-splattering results. We discuss a somewhat disappointing Cronenberg entry, unflattering comparisons to Marvel films and Neil Breen, ponder the best tactics for capturing mind-control warriors and ask ourselves whether the best way to introduce yourself to someone is to essentially torture them from the get-go. All of which leads to one question: H o w w o u l d y o u s u r v i v e ? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: We're gonna do this the Scanner way. I'm gonna suck your brain dry! Support us at Patreon.com/HowtoSurvivePod to get every episode one week early, plus monthly bonus episodes and more. It's episode 265...and the television screen is the retina of the mind's eye. Videodrome (1983) tells the story of slimy TV executive Max Renn, who specialises in digging up obscure softcore pornography and bloody violence to broadcast to the feverish masses on his cable TV station. But, when Max comes into contact with the extreme and nightmarish violence of Videodrome, things begin to unravel, leading to hallucinations, BDSM-infused re-enactments and the transference of violent media into violent reality. We discuss chest wound gun holsters, a prescient depiction of the anxieties and effects of violent media, dig into the most thematically-packed 90 minute movies we’ve ever seen, unpick a gory special effects masterclass and ponder whether, if you want to stop someone investigating something, whether it’s a good idea to give them loads of information to help them do just that. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Death to Videodrome. Long live the new flesh! Support us at Patreon.com/HowtoSurvivePod to get every episode one week early, plus monthly bonus episodes and more. It's episode 264...and it's your coffin, my love. Enjoy it. Most of us never get to know what it feels like. Interview With The Vampire (1994) spins a century-spanning yarn of epic proportions, following the listless slave plantation owner Louis de Pointe du Lac, as he is bitten and transformed into an immortal creature by vampire Lestat de Lioncourt. Much like a new parent, an apparently endless future of night feeds causes Louis to have an existential crisis lasting decades as he stands and morosely observes various comings and goings across New Orleans, Paris and San Francisco, eventually relating this to a journalist in the modern day for our pleasure(?). It’s a bloody diet of ham and mince as Brad Pitt sulks, Tom Cruise camps it up and a 10-year old Kirsten Dunst steals the show, in what is an unusual and somewhat misguided and often boring Vampiric fable pondering the meaning of life. We discuss blatant homoeroticism, outline the unique qualities of the vampire interviewees, question the reasoning of an exclusively rat-based diet and ponder whether we’ve already passed the best time in our lives to be made eternal beings. What other dark gifts might we find? There’s only one way to find out. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: I was mortal until you gave me your immortal kiss. Next time, it’s the start of David Cronenberg Season with Videodrome (1983).0 comments0

It's episode 263...and it's actually a pretty cool place… if you're a Martian! The Lost Boys (1987) puts us into the youth culture hotbed of 1980s Santa Clara, the supposed 'murder capital' of the United States. To the newly arrived Michael and Sam Emerson the summer presents opportunities of new beginnings, new friends and new hobbies which, for Michael at least, means things like riding motorbikes, hanging from bridges, floating uncontrollably and drinking blood from an ornate ceremonial glass. If that all sounds like a classic case of vampirism then you're not alone, and Sam enlists the help of local vampire hunters Edgar and Alan Frog to kill the lead vampire and cure his brother. All good, normal stuff. We oil ourselves up and strut our stuff, saxophones in hand, to break down a beloved vampire cult classic; namecheck Coreys Feldman and Haim, Jack Bauer and Gob Bluth; question why vampires would live in California; and consider what kind of local knowledge a Grandfather should be passing on. Plus, we try to get to the bottom of Chris' hatred of 'cool' 80s cult movies. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Y o u ’ d b e t t e r g e t y o u r s e l f a g a r l i c T - s h i r t , b u d d y , o r i t ’ s y o u r f u n e r a l . It's episode 262...and All you people are so scared of me. Most days I'd take that as a compliment. But it ain't me you gotta worry about now. Pitch Black (2000) tells the story of a group of spaceship crash survivors. Among them, the fearsome criminal maniac, Riddick. They promptly realise that the planet is inhabited by creatures that attack in the darkness. And unfortunately the planet is about to experience its first triple-eclipse in two decades. But luckily Riddick can see in the dark.... (honestly it's not as bad as it sounds...) Join us as we outline the value of being nice and of ignoring compasses; query the evolutionary direction of an alien race; and stress the importance of not flying through meteorites after a meteorite-related crash. It's episode 261...and I guess charisma and eyeliner go a long way. The Butterfly Effect (2003) tells the story of Evan, a college student who suffered from blackouts during traumatic moments in his childhood. When reading an old diary, he discovers he can travel back into his younger self during the blackouts, and even change what happened, radically altering his future reality. Can he engineer the perfect life, or will the flap of Evan's teenage wings cause disastrous metaphorical hurricanes for him and his loved ones? We discover the downside of revisiting an adolescent favourite, discuss the best way to approach an explosive device, outline the importance of choosing not to murder people and, most crucially, talk about why reading a traumatic diary entry makes for a terrible precursor to a one night stand. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: You can't change who people are without destroying who they were. Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022) tells the story of Bee, who attends a 'hurricane party' at the home of her girlfriend's friends. During a game of 'bodies bodies bodies' (a game similar to murder in the dark ), one of the friends is killed for real. What ensues is a treat for horror / thriller / comedy fans everywhere. The Black Phone (2022) tells the story of Finney and Gwen, brother and sister living in a 1970s Denver suburb. Children have been disappearing, and people live in fear of The Grabber, the mysterious individual that could be responsible. When Finney is kidnapped, he finds he is able to communicate with The Grabber's previous victims through a magical phone. Meanwhile, Gwen's supernatural abilities could hold the key to finding Finney before it's too late. Sounds like a Stephen King novel, you say? You must be Joe King. It's episode 253...and I'm smarter than a beaver. Prey (2022) tells the story of Naru, a young Commanche woman who is eager to be recognised as a great hunter. To earn the respect of her peers, she intends to hunt a creature which normally preys on humans... but it's a classic case of be careful what you wish for , as an intergalactic hunter equipped with lasers, invisibility and a bad attitude has just rolled into town. We talk about the honour codes of intergalactic hunters; the importance of taking your chances; and the obvious benefits of silencing any gargles, coughs and clicks when you're trying to employ stealth. Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: If it bleeds, we can kill it. - How to Survive: X (2022)How to Survive is now on Patreon! Support us at Patreon.com/HowtoSurvivePod to get every episode one week early, plus monthly bonus episodes and more. It's episode 252...and this wasn't what I had in mind when I agreed to help out on your film. X (2022) tells the story of aspiring pornstar Maxine, who takes a roadtrip to a remote farmhouse to shoot an adult film with her motley film crew buddies. Will the farm's elderly residents, including the mysterious and apparently infirm Pearl, prove happy about providing the backdrop for a smutty film? Who could say. It's smiles all round as we discuss revisionist slashers and elderly flashers, alligators, octogenarian daters, electronic masturbators and fundamentalist Christian agitators, and ask ourselves whether this is the most likeable cast of survivors in the subgenre's history? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Pointing it and waving it around is usually enough to scare them straight. - How to Survive: Nope (2022)How to Survive is now on Patreon! Support us at Patreon.com/HowtoSurvivePod to get every episode one week early, plus monthly bonus episodes and more. It's episode 251...and I mean, we really put on a show. Nope (2022) tells the story of OJ and Emerald, horse-wrangling siblings struggling to keep the family ranch going in the wake of their father's untimely death. But when mysterious events beset their farm and the nearby theme park, the pair set out to collect undeniable evidence of the strange goings-on, with the help of an enthusiastic technician and a not-so-enthusiastic cinematographer. We talk themes and theories, UAPs and UFOs, discuss having eyes bigger than your belly and painting eyes on the planet, and wonder whether anything in the film is anywhere near as scary as a chimp on the loose. All of which leads to one important question: how would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: You don't look at it unless you want its attention. - How to Survive: Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (2021)How to Survive is now on Patreon! Support us at Patreon.com/HowtoSurvivePod It's episode 250...and she's still here. Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (2021) is the latest installment in the beloved horror franchise, and marks the first time we've watched a brand-new entry of any of our favoured franchises since we started the podcast! Margot reconnects with her estranged family who belong to an isolated Amish community, but not everything is as it seems. However, in a stroke of good fortune, Margot has brought along a documentary crew to capture crystal clear 4K footage of all the things that go bump in the night. We revisit a modern horror staple, discuss the rights and wrongs of activities paranormal and otherwise, ask if a found footage film as ever looked less 'found' than this and ponder whether you should reconsider telling a cult member that you've uncovered some creepy cult member business going on. Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: I know every Amish family within a fifty mile area and they ain't Amish. Next time, it's Chriiiiisssstmaaaaaaaaaas. Get in touch! It's time we cut out the cancer. Malignant (2021) marks James Wan's glitzy return to the horror genre with what feels like a run through the greatest hits of his filmography. We've got abductions, nightmares, haunted houses, but how well does it all hang together? We discuss a film of two halves, the strangest martial arts movie ever made, consider health and safety tips for constructing torture dungeons, and Chris tests Joe on his single-nasty-word-horror-movie-title knowledge with his single-nasty-word-horror-movie-title quiz. All of which leads to one important question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Some of the conversations you had with Gabriel just chilled us to the bone. - How to Survive: Face/Off (1997)How to Survive is now on Patreon! Support us at Patreon.com/HowtoSurvivePod It's episode 248...and I hate to see you go, but I love to watch you leave. Face/Off (1997) tells the story of FBI agent Sean Archer, tasked with apprehending the world's most-wanted terrorist-for-hire Castor Troy. With time running out before a dirty bomb hits LA, Sean takes drastic action - impersonating a comatose Castor by stealing his face via a surgical face transplant. But things go from bad to worse when Castor wakes up and begins impersonating Sean in turn. Disaster! We discuss John Woo, ask how sensible a mid-surgery haircut would be, ask if you're really getting the best out of two actors by asking them to play each other, and ask ourselves is this the stupidest Hollywood blockbuster ever made? All of which leads to one important question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: I could eat a peach for hours.
