As an adult, they're all just things that you woke up. Not going to be good at and rather than just making people feel bad about things that just not good at. It's better to focus on that strength cuz everybody has to hands as well.
Welcome to the growth mindset podcast, the inspiration station, why? We know that it's not always the people that start off the smartest who end up the smartest.
Today, I'm delighted to have a key Newton on the show. Again, if you don't remember her, she runs, kitchen with her sister, Jeanne Newton and they have raised / 350 million pounds of funding for the business. They began their Journey straight out of University and went through mistake after mistake over several years and through a painful process of just many disasters, they kept improving to get to where they are today. If you miss my previous episode with her, I can highly recommend going a listening to the episode titled file your way to success because she has an incredible story in this episode. We dive into a case lessons on team build, understanding your own strength on the strength of others. A critical part of, finding a cooling and working out. What we want to do in our life. I think it's understanding how we work and he we work well, with to get the best out of All Souls. This conversation is a great insight into a housewife that I do and we jump into the conversation. After I asked, I hate how she and her sister Learned to Drive sales to keep the business alive.
So my sister is the sales person. She is an incredible head of Revenue. Unbelievable. And she had a very interesting journey through education school and University eLearning. She wasn't good at school. I hope she just might be saying this, but she wasn't good at school. She really couldn't reach his reading. Said, she got really sick when she was like 8 and she missed the whole your school and I went back into the same year and this is very stressful and I'm the opposite. I had a really good time at school. I love learning and love school and I did. Well what happened will be going to Wildwood? Cuz I guess he was the moor's. Anyone, you know, me, you found everything really easy or you had a massive tool box of people say no, to her everything being pretty difficult, things went wrong, and she just got the tool box out and started walking around it and it's just impressive Phoenix and she's leads the sales teams in both companies right from day one, she just great at Gracie. You know?
Great at talking to people and really amazing like an Engaged and amazing with the client that she also has really grateful to 3 and really good attention to detail. And I think the combination of that is what makes us so good at what she does, and a whole host of other things. Cuz I guess to say, when you doing the world and not, you're just dealing with so many different different bits and pieces of the company. Wow, that was fascinating. And an incredible story of resilience in Jersey, right mindset that she planned to power through our weaknesses and it was actually our weaknesses that created a strength stunning, grab my stuff from your sister. I also have dyslexia which is a common trait that goes. You could be a guitar tuner yet, has a very guarantee. So I also picked up on the fact, you mentioned, you have a great team, how did you recruit them? And find the pocket people to compliment each other is nothing better than I did.
And I would have left over this thing and it's pushed, it wasn't. As she is the bus and he's like, executing all of that stuff behind me and like a long side V and making these things into reality. And I did mean. Nothing execution is everything basically, so without the ability to execute, well, you caught up. Is he succeeds post ideas face and eat it. Had a great team around, you is like having amazing people coming up with ideas and ask you to them that you could never fool of yourself and she could never ask yourself and it feels great to walk in the great tee, doesn't it end? I think it's the hardest thing to get, right? And it's a two-way street. I had a lot for anybody else except I bought two kitchens. A lot of kitchens my entire kind of, when I was a teenager into my very out of twenties,
And starting to build a team running, you just learning so much about what works. And what doesn't what I can you learn a lot about yourself and what you look like on a good day of what you look like, going to buy a day and how that comes across in and just everything basically. And I'm not going to say that I've got it right? Every since I've definitely been a terrible manager at some point and it's been a great manager other points and I stepped in some places. It's an amazing facts and not accepted another face and it's just been, it's is all stuff. But I think the comic has he was in the right front for a long time and if he puts the team now and the snow advice I could give about it. I don't wait. It's almost like magic it like if he's the most important thing I didn't even think there is a good thing. I didn't even say I couldn't even give you any advice on this. I don't feel like I'm in a good enough and I just feel like I'm not good enough manager at email that to give anyone any kind of comment on it.
What I can say is that right now, I have two fantastic teams around me and I'm looking at them. Like, you guys are great and you did so good, excuse, saying, and you deliver it will the stuff and it feels super size. He is so excited. I'm excited to come into work everyday as he did. I'm excited to see what they do next. I know sites that use in the company and I'm sights wasn't asked you or some of the stuff that we could plan, do you think that you felt the excitement Factor during the interview process? When you're speaking to them, kind of related the house? So I've been investing in startups for the last seven years and the ones that have consistently done the best. We're the ones that I immediately read that page that I was just really excited to interview the founders of my pug cost and all of those who have literally gone to the me, the rest of them while I was like, I think this is like it. I think it's a good investment, so I'm going to try it. And there is a moving teaching around, in hindsight, seven years later. I'm like,
Our consistency in my gut feeling free excitement here and do you think you you're able to pick up or not in the south at your interview? To think my Belgian of what? Jocelyn might not be what makes a great team member and I think is so important to have people that think differently to you and your team, and it just all different teeth that have different experiences, different backgrounds, like having that consists of Rusty in your team, is, what can I make you really successful and I get what you mean about the founder of a company. But when it comes to putting together a team is like a jigsaw puzzle, and everybody has strengths every has weaknesses, and you need to know which pieces are missing in order to build a really pretty successful team and you may not get it, right? You might fit like the wrong deposit, went to the wrong place, and that's all. I wish. I had a quarter and I'm not going to call that dad's going to dinner, but yet you go to work with what people have to give. And
If you can do that, that's what it feels like to be managed very well, I think is like people who accepts a while, your weak-ass 10, people pushing you away or strongest, and stiffen you in into a balance of, like, other people who can complement your skills, and think, in a different way to you, that's very complimentary. So, I definitely would have got with Jeannie and with many of the people now and the team, but I would say that though, it's nice, we'd love to think about how we feel, and I've got about somebody that can be no great place to start. If it were building a team for Scotch cuz I feel like sometimes you can be trusted, but sometimes it countenance interview prices and hiring processes really rigorous and does a lot of stuff that we do. Which is Daniel Kahneman Thinking Fast and Slow Ohio prices based on that site, to reduce spice as much as possible. And try to think about what counts, I met this guy and at /, he's an investor. What do you think makes like a good?
Company. And he's like a company that if it says it's going to do something doesn't doesn't if they say they're going to hire a salesperson, say hi. Some is a sales person. If they say they're going to get a CTO that I should get a CTO. And I think it was such an interesting thing to say because so true. You can you look up and distract you for the fact that when you're hiring, someone is a really great person, but they actually don't have to skills for that specific role. And I might be somebody else that you wouldn't have to go so fast that actually has the actual skills that will make them right for the role that you need to fill in that. You usually needs to be off this. So yeah, we used a condom in a lot like that hiring strategy after the break which is surprisingly is not going to be a famous cut into not that Pennington jobs which this episode is rather appropriate for I have met up having by well anyway. Shout out to the control box because it's freakin great today. How about you
Too late for my other favorite thing. You guessed it. It's athletic greens. Boom, that 81 for me, that is blooming, great. And I've been taking it for years now and it doesn't taste, are you? Kearny ShopRite of your house and pick up the ultimate daily nutritional insurance. And now, back to the show, I think that what she's building is like absolutely amazing, and I think that how hiring an HR stress she is unbelievable. I think she gives me try to do the same thing. Just give us information up front about the detail of the day today of the joke. Sometimes you like the idea of a job the job title but what goes into you might be interested in that. And so we try to get information on a Monday, you'll be here and do this and on Tuesday and let me to Destin at this is what your day is going to look like in order to get people like that. Pretty clear idea so they can make it an assessment about if they want to spend that time to eat these specific things in assessing based on the skills involved, in doing those very specific things bother me. Like why do you see yourself in ten years?
Facilities manager, get your like one question. We ask Sam if he came in to walk and the sink was breaking. What would you do? It's like have you done this a thousand times a fool? Have you done this like five times a fool for examples where you can say, I fix the sink is like those practical things are going to be the foundation of you do very well here. So you know, I think I was kind of a quilted, but yes, it is difficult to find a great team and put it together. And yeah, it's kind of cherish it when you get it right, because it's not positive. Either in the eight years that we've been running. It's not always been a constant and people leaving people. Join instincts and change, I was great. It was a quite so you smashed it. I think at Walmart to take something, that's how they got really good managers in pretty good teams, they treated it like a jigsaw puzzle because as an adult they're all just things that you all could not going to be good at. I know that Tree of Might
All the people to, and rather than just making people feel bad about things that just not good at. It's better to focus on that strength cuz everybody has to hands as well. Thanks at that amazing that and some people have Incredible strength that you can get distracted in the weeds like things that they all do well to actually just changed our focus and prioritize the things that amazing that you were going to get incredible results. Somebody else's strength will be that person's weakness and if they went together then you know go power couple.
What a legend so many great points about working with your skills and using the strength of others to enhance your iron instead of holding yourself back in frustration. You may have noticed that I fast on, said to have 200 people with it, he didn't know anything about it. And yet once prompted, she had so much and good advice what she's learned so far, but still has so much more to learn. And I think this is a really interesting marker that I noticed often in brilliant people that they didn't feel like, they know everything, because they're aware of how much they still have to learn that show that their opinions will still have many flaws in them. And they are open to constantly updating them. If you listen to the last episode with a key, she spoke about her fascination with infinity, and I think Infinity is a very strange concept to wrap your head around. But when you dwell on it, you realize that the future is kind of endless and that say much about, you know today will inevitably be incorrect. So I just would like to add
The fact that we can keep on learning new things everyday and it's just bloody wonderful, isn't it? So, thanks again to a key for her. Amazing wisdom, and humility. Thank you so much for this until and thank yourself your consistency and persistently is where it's at. I truly hope you dance coming today and if you didn't, then I failed, but that's no fair idea.
