Powerful
I have to say, I am a novice at the scriptures but have loved learning from them for a long time. After teaching early morning seminary for seven years I cannot get enough. I just have a deep desire to learn all I can. Your podcasts just fill me up with joy and hope and even more excitement to go and learn for myself. One of my favorites!
Michael McLean is one of my favorites. Someone gave me one of his cassettes back in the 80s when I joined the church and it started and wonderful journey. He says things in a way that teach me because for me it’s also true (and not irreverent) that “sometimes a song teaches me a truth the only way my heart will hear.”

Scholarly and Intellectually focused
I make this podcast part of my weekly diet of gospel study. The majority of the episodes are scholarly and intellectually focused. Occasionally the podcast surprises me with unique guests and overall I find it very thoughtful. Sometimes the podcast feels like an “old school” Sunday School lesson where the guests are just trying to cover all the content in the Come Follow Me lesson. Hank and John help to balance things with their perspectives and insights, but I feel that it reinforces old practices of covering content to just cover content. With the right approach it is still very insightful and worth my time.

Love the show, but the timing of the release is off
Maybe I just don’t how to work my phone, but when they release two episodes each week, part 2 always ends up playing first because it’s the newest release. Maybe y’all could release part 2 first then part 1, so that I don’t have to go back into the show to fetch part 1. Or maybe I just need to learn how to get them to play in order w/o all the extra effort

Brings Come, Follow Me to Life!
When Come, Follow Me first debuted as the standardized Church curriculum, I will admit that I had a hard time bringing it into my life and to my family in a meaningful way. Listening to this podcast every week has gotten me excited about the scriptures and sparked a renewed passion for scripture study on my own and with my family. During the pandemic, my testimony struggled and this podcast brought me out of the dark. Thank you Hank and John and to all your fabulous guests! Your podcast is a treat every week :)

The spirit touched me so powerfully through Michael McLean
I love this podcast and have loved learning with all of the scholars you bring on but this episode is my favorite. Michael has written modern day psalms that truly touched me as he sang them. I haven’t felt the Spirit as strongly as I did listening to this episode in a long time. Thank you so much.

Loved Dr. Huntsman
I loved just listening to the testimony and words of Dr. Huntsman. My favorite of his words, “sometimes it’s just good because it helps you feel God!” I’ve always hated hearing people say they learn something new each time they go to the temple. It made me wonder what was wrong with me. I loved hearing him talk about this topic! It felt like me. I feel God each time I go there. I feel the spirit while listening to this podcast and especially listening to Dr. Huntsman’s testimony and live for these Psalms. Thank you so much!

Good show - More guest time
The episodes with Adam Miller were great. I wish I had heard more from him than I did. The hosts are great, but I felt the episode had more of the hosts comments/thoughts than the guest (not that they weren’t good comments) . Would have loved to hear more of Dr. Miller’s thoughts. Good but could be better
I’ve listened to three or so other podcasts that cover the Come Follow Me lessons, and frankly I was surprised that I liked this one the most. Hank and John are funny and at times insightful, and their guests are of a very high scholarly quality and are faithful. Therein lies my complaint. To exaggerate to make my point, sometimes Hank and John are so caught up in their own patter that they seem to forget they have a guest. I was really looking forward to Adam Miller discussing Job, and he did a good job. But I bet if the episode was analyzed that less than one half of the dialogue was Adam Miller teaching us about Job. Hank and John need to honor their guests by giving them more time to share their message.

Esther - Wow, another whitewash!
Normally this is my favorite podcast for enhancing scripture study, but this one was a stretch! It was said the king spent time with each virgin to decide on who would be queen, but no mention that it was at night in his bed. Emphasizing some positive aspects is great but let’s not leave out what the text actually says! This type of wresting the scriptures drives me crazy, and every religion does it! Esther is a delightful literary work possibly on par with a Shakespeare comedy, not meant to be taken literally imo. It’s full of reversals, exaggerations, satire, absurdities, a great heroine, patriotism & events to create hope. Please don’t try to turn it into the story of the brother of Jarred or anything else that it ISN’T!! Also, I don’t call killing 75,000 people as being merciful, or asking for a 2nd day to kill 300 more as not being vengeful! This story is meant to be a huge exaggeration, and certainly not a morality tale! It is a very chilling portent, as portraying the first (of many) extermination orders against the Jews. But here, for a change, they are allowed to defend themselves, hence a festival!

Favorite podcast!
I LOVE this podcast and have never missed an episode. They are so great at discussing the scriptures, their history, and the culture surrounding the time that’s being explained. I feel goosebumps as I learn and I’ve found this to be my favorite method of learning :) Thank you Hank and John for the hours and hours put into each podcast and for the amazing guests you bring on each week. Increases My Learning
I love this podcast! I started using this as one resource when I was called as a Gospel Doctrine teacher and still continue listening and learning in my new calling. Understanding the context of these scriptural stories, and all the details that the scholars and experts share during their time on the show, builds a more complete scriptural picture for me and deepens my understanding. “Good information leads to good inspiration.” Each weekly guest brings good information that really helps to increase my understanding. Thank you for the work you are doing.

Amazing!
I love this podcast! So spiritually uplifting and the guests bring so much more depth and understanding to the sometimes hard to understand Old Testament. I also love the background they give that brings it all in to focus. I was just called to be the Sunday School teacher in my branch and a lovely sister recommended this podcast. Already this podcast has helped me with my own study and with my preparation to teach beyond measure. I am so thankful for this podcast and being able to listen to it again and again while I’m at work.

Take your scripture understanding to the next level
Hard to say what my favorite thing about this podcast is, but here are 3: 1)The weekly experts seem to always bring understanding to scripture passages I’ve had trouble understanding. 2) They always tie the weeks lesson to words of the current prophets and apostles, and 3) Seems like every episode one of them says something that really hits home and I feel the Spirit. This is my favorite podcast.

You reminded me of a quote while listening to episodes 26: “You can’t stop a bird from dropping a twig on your head but you can stop it from building a nest.” Sometimes you can’t stop yourself from seeing sometimes bad, you are in school/work/in a fallen world and you see something on accident. You often times can’t control that, but you can control what you do with that “twig”. You can also choose to run away from the bird if possible. Thank you Hank and John for this podcast, I love it. I listen to this podcast every week, it's a really good one! The different guests and insights each week are really helpful. I do prefer when they bring in more of the real life application, not just focusing on the historical aspect, but that seems to vary based on the guest.

So Informative!!
This podcast is fabulous! I learn so much each week. It really helps me understand more about the cultures during those time periods. I love learning the Hebrew translations of some of the words used and impactful spiritual insights. All the guests bring so much to the scriptures. I absolutely loved learning from Gaye Strathearn again. She is the best! I loved being in one of her classes when I was a student 20 years ago! I hope she can come on again soon.

I really appreciate this podcast for an in-depth study of the Old Testament and the genuine enthusiasm of the hosts. Some of my most favorite parts are the weekly “Follow Him Favorites”—they are highly relevant topics to the things my teenagers are experiencing and prompt great discussions in our family. I love reading scripture verses and then coming to this podcast to get rich historical context and deeper understanding of what’s happening in the verses. The Doctrine and Covenants and Old Testament are not the easiest for me to follow or understand on my own, so when I’m looking for a broader understanding, this podcast really helps. All the guest scholars do a lovely job and Hank and John are awesome at lending perspective.

Mind Opening!
Highly recommend this podcast for in depth scripture study. Love, love, love the guests, who illuminate, define, expound, and provide the history and culture and meaning to scriptures. Bytheway and Smith are wonderful hosts who ask revelatory questions and provide insights into hard to understand (why does God order the Israelites to wipe out an entire city?) doctrines. I want to download and save every episode so I can listen to them again and again. I’ve learned soooo much and hope the podcasts keep going even after we have cycled through the standard scriptures. There is so much to learn. Eating it all up! Thank you!

I’ve been listening to this podcast from its inception and my life and faith have been changed for the better for it. Each episode has relevant conversations about what life was like for the people we read about in the scriptures, and how it’s incredibly applicable to our lives today. I’ve never had so much empathy and drawn so many parallels from the scriptures, to my own personal struggles. It can be challenging to understand/focus on learning from the scriptures and even from church leaders of our day sometimes, but this podcast makes the kind of gospel knowledge/insight I always wished I could attain through my own scripture studying efforts alone, accessible to everyone. I usually guilt myself into doing my doing my scripture study by saying that I can listen to my current novel after I get it done. Helpful in every way
This come follow me podcast has helped me study more deeply and thoroughly. The hosts are very attentive and explain what the guests say in a different perspective. They ask relevant stories and have brought me closer to the spirit and continue to do so. The guests beautifully choreograph their words in a way someone who is just baptized can understand to people who have been members for their life and they’re on the verge of returning to Heavenly Father. Love it soooooo much!!!!!!!!!

I was at Dixie high school the same years as you in fact I graduated in 1997 it is so cool to see you and John Bytheway do a podcast and I love to be able to tell people that I went to school with Hank Smith! But to add onto the Easter show I proposed to my wife at the St. George Temple grounds in 2006!

Life-Changing!
I’ve come to love and enjoy this podcast, which has been running now for several years, for two reasons: 1) John and Hank are humble, good-natured, good-humored, sincere, and spiritual. I love that they’re doing this podcast for the right reasons, and not to push any sort of “brand” or celebrity status. 2) The insights are unparalleled. It is awe-inspiring to hear from such a wide range of biblical and scriptural experts coming in the show each week. EP 11 is the Mic Drop
I have loved all of these episodes. The deep-dive experts have given me pause many times as I’ve gained new perspective and learning. But this episode on “anti-fragile” and trusting and enduring is a life-changer. I found myself wanting to pause every 20 seconds just to think about each nugget more deeply. I have shared with so many people and I haven’t even gotten to the end of it. Man, I sure would love the cruise ship sometimes… but the trade-off wouldn’t be worth it in the end.

Struggling Listener
I love most of the content of the Podcasts but I go crazy with speakers using Um and Uh as filler words. Especially John Bytheway. I don’t think he can go 1 sentence without at least 1 uh or um and usually multiple. I’m not saying this to be mean. It is just difficult to listen to. Especially from people who’s professions are speakers and teachers. Please bring this to his attention. I’m sure he can overcome it. I’m guessing it will be harder to ask the guests. Thank you. I actually Fasted for the Lord to help me to filter out the filler words when I’m listening It helped a little. Thank you Thank you Thank you John. I am so impressed. So quickly you eliminated the uhs and um’s from your vocabulary. I am super happy. Now if you would please ask Hank to do the same. Thank you again. And the guest didn’t use filler words and sounds either. What a breath of fresh air.

My favorite Come Follow Me resource!!!
I love this podcast! Thanks for your efforts! I can’t wait until we get to the Book of Mormon! Your guests are fantastic and I enjoy when new ones come and previous guests return. Can I make one suggestion? It’s a small thing, but I would really appreciate it if you would upload each episode in reverse order. What I mean by that is make it so when my podcasts are set to sort episodes chronologically (newest to oldest). I would love to be able to tap the part one for each week and then have it automatically move to part two. As to is now, part two is newer than part one which means I have to stop at the end of part one, then find part two (which may involve a bit of scrolling, which isn’t the end of the world (first world problems 🤷🏼♂️). This small backend change would not alter the content of the podcast at all, but I thing it would make its easier to listen to. The Gospelcomes to life in this podcast
I know John B from my experiences with EFY in the 90’s. I have heard a good number of Hank’s talks to youth and adults. This dynamic duo are a mix of learning and laughter. I agree with the podcast founder the late Bro Sorensen that for some people sitting to do come follow me can be challenging even with prayer and study. The Old Testament is “really hard” for me. I teach the 14-15 yr olds and I want them to love the scriptures. I was nervous that my blocks around OT scripture would make my lessons dry. My January and February classes have been so much more meaningful and fun to learn together as I bring in some of insights and perspective the podcast offers. I tip my hat to both of you for taking the time with both of your busy schedules to help us better understand the God of Love and feel His love more deeply through meaningful scripture study. I found this podcast last April during our Doctrine and Covenants study and let me tell you, this is the most helpful and easily accessible resource there is! As someone who struggles with sitting down to study the scriptures, I highly recommend this resource. It allows me to listen while I’m cleaning my house, driving or cooking dinner and while I’m listening I jot down notes as I’m prompted by the spirit. This podcast has not only helped enhance my personal studies but also our family scripture study. This podcast doesn’t just read the scriptures to you. It offers you a history of what’s going on during that time period and valuable information that allows you to connect the dots between the different books of scripture. Great Study Addition
I have listenend to these podcasts pretty much weekly for about a year now. Mostly well done with great and informative supporting guests. I'm pleased it's now covering Old Testament this year. My only complaint is that on occasion Hank will make comments that are incongruent with that stated in the Church's official lesson manual and talks given by the Apostles and Prophets (ie all statements regarding section 82 verse 7) He seems to keep coming back to this verse as saying "false doctrine" and "that's not what the Lord is saying" when those whose prerogative it is to say what doctrine is and what the Lord means have said otherwise. I realize it's often difficult to watch every word in a setting such as this but it's their repsonsiblity as well to make sure that they aren't teaching things that are their opinion as fact. It really should be presented as being opinion, or that there are different ways of looking at things if that's how they want to go about it. Otherwise well done.

My husband and I make this podcast part of our weekly study. It has expanded our vision of the role of scripture study in our testimonies. I have enjoyed listening to the knowledgeable guest who teach gospel principles in a way that stimulates us to study even more. I highly recommend it.

A Million Thank you’s
I’m so very grateful for the time efforts and talents that are put into this podcast. It has helped me increase my spirituality 100 fold. I have had a greater desire to study out my scriptures and have found myself wanting to repent. Not because I have committed any great sins, but because I want to change and be better. It’s a different kind of repentance than the culture has taught for so many years. I’m so grateful to each guest that brings their a game and their testimony to the show. I’m 17 years old and found this podcast a few months ago, I cannot express how much this podcast has taught and strengthened my testimony. Church has always been enjoyable but my relationship with my Heavenly Father has grown immensely and the teachings and understandings of the gospel make so much sense. GREAT EPISODE: Season 1 Episode 9 and 10. Hank Smith and John Bytheway are wonderful and every comment they make are just powerful. Thiss podcast is powerful!! I’ve neverrr been bored listening to these episodes which is shocking! Most podcasts get kinda boring but I get so excited every week they post. One thing I do love is how they debunk false misconceptions and stereotypes that are commonly assumed or mistaken by members and nonmembers about the church and teachings. I recommend this podcast to all members, there is so much to learn. Not only are they sharing these wonderful words with listeners but also with all members as listeners share what they learn from this podcast in their callings and families.

Love this!
This podcast has been so amazing for me. It has helped me to understand the scriptures better, increased my faith, and invited the Spirit into my life to receive personal revelation. And I’ve only been listening for three weeks! I love the graciousness of what I’ve been hearing. I’m hearing the gospel being interpreted through a more liberal lense than the one through which I had been looking at it. I especially love the Genesis 5; Moses 6 episode with Dr. Jenet Erickson. It’s like you all were describing my own parenting life, which helped me to see that I am not the only one. Also in this episode I loved Dr. Erickson’s emphasis on the importance of not being ashamed of our imperfections. And again, simply the liberal-ness of the conversation loosens and opens up my mind and heart. Thank you!

Informative, intelligent and inspiring podcast!
I teach a Gospel Doctrine class and listening to this podcast all last year in 2021 greatly improved my understanding of Church History and my love of the prophet Joseph. Going into this year, I have been so anxious to teach the Old Testament. However, just listening to these first few episodes this year has me excited for it instead! I appreciate (this is an understatement!) listening and learning from your guests, who are so much more educated in not just the scriptures but in areas that enhance our understanding of the gospel and the world we live in. I just listened to the creation episodes with Dr. Joshua Sears. My favorites so far! And there have been quite a few favorites already! Wow wow wow! This brings so much clarity to what we have been studying in seminary and in what we have been studying in Come, Follow Me and has developed into more than a habit, like brushing my teeth. The scholars invited here to share with us their studies, their knowledge—it’s about time we have a platform singing loud and proud praises of our beloved prophets to drown out the noise of the arguments that seek to refute the men of God that our prophets were and what we stand for as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Great, but too long for kids
Excellent guests. Great content. My only disappointment was that I thought it might help our family study, but it won’t (except for the insights I gain and can bring to family discussions) because it goes into far too much depth and length to listen to together. Update: John and Hank are amazing. Soon after I wrote the original review, they added Follow Him Favorites (not claiming a causal link :)), which is perfect for the whole family! Ahmad Corbitt on the Articles of Faith and official declarations was phenomenal. Jenet Erickson on the family proclamation was amazing and inspiring. This podcast is incredibly uplifting and thought-provoking.

My testimony of the Doctrine and Covenants wasn’t as solid as I liked starting out, but I can grateful say that it has been strengthened. Also importantly my love and respect for Joseph Smith has grown. Again thank you and I can’t wait for the Old Testament episodes!

Our favorite podcast
We had the rare opportunity to have an apostle come and speak to the youth in our home town. My oldest son said, “Is John going to be there?” I told him, no. His response was, “Oh man. I was really hoping John would be there. He’s so funny.” My son heard me listening to the podcast this summer, he loved it. He hasn’t missed an episode since then and listens every night. I use this podcast as a reward after I exercise and before I start my day. I love my time in the mornings to listen and to learn. I have learned more about my Savior Jesus Christ and his Gospel through this podcast than anywhere else. I was talking to my wife just the other night and I told her I think the “Follow Him” podcast is one of the BEST things that has ever happened to me. I receive revelation on a daily basis and more importantly, I feel my God’s love every time I hear them or the guests speak. This really has been an amazing experience for me.

The insights of Hank, his <insert glowing adjective here> cohost, John and their amazing guests have been extremely helpful in my study of the D&C. Church history is not my thing -oh let’s be honest, history of any kind is not my thing! - but this podcast helps me understand more about not only church history, but more importantly, some of the meaning of the scriptures contained therein. With no one at home to discuss and learn with, I find this podcast most helpful in increasing my understanding of the scriptures and the content of the Come Follow Me home study program. Thank you for this podcast. As someone born in the mid 1900’s (haha! I am almost ancient!) who thought I would ever be able to access insights from amazing spiritual teachers and experts?? Tender mercy in podcast form
I cannot speak highly enough of this podcast. It has done wonders for my study and interest in the Doctrine and Covenants. Context opens doors for interpretation like I never thought possible and John and Hank supply that to listeners, as well as their invited guests and historians. I’m seeing a lot of reviews that say this podcast is too lengthy. I cannot disagree more! If I can fill my day with learning and being uplifted, my week is better. Two hours of church each week just isn’t enough to edify and keep the spirit. Episode 26- Dr Line
I love the messages of hope and redemption that your guests convey on your podcast. However there was a comment by Dr Shine that has bothered me. He said something to the effect of “we have to be very careful not to be too generous about the doctrine of grace”. My first thought was “no, we are not generous enough about the doctrine of Grace “. I grew up in the 70’s and I never heard about Grace then - only justice. There were other comments he made that bothered me as well. It sounded like he hadn’t listened to your podcasts and repeated things we had already heard. I think you both conveyed your thoughts that were different than his while still being respectful and I appreciated that. We’re all trying to do our best- I just don’t want anymore pressure that I have to do it on my own without the grace of the Savior ❤️

Love the show
Perhaps only one suggestion: A little more guest speaker, and a little less Smith. Sorry, it just seems like you sometimes cut the guest speakers off just at little too early to make your comments. I would suggest you be a better listener. Please forgive me for the candid criticism. I do not wish to offend. I see a future bishop in brother Smith.

Testimony strengthened
These podcasts are the highlight of my week. You, the hosts, and your guests are most wonderful. My appreciation and love for the Church, it’s history, the gospel, and all those who sacrificed so much for the restoration has increased. I want to remain steadfast and immovable in my testimony. I hope you continue these as we study The Old Testament.

It gets better each week!
I absolutely love this podcast! I look forward to each weeks episodes and the new guests. I love that they have experts who know the history of the church and can speak to what is happening at the time. This has made mine and my husbands weekly Come Follow Me study so much richer. I hope they continue this podcast next year with the Old Testament!

Love everything BUT…
Guys! Come on! 3 parts, all 1 hour long for 1 week of study?!? I’m loving this but don’t have time. Instead of a 5 min cliffs notes recap can you either stick to 1 hour or make a 1 hour recap? Also, I’m thankful for all the worldly praise and accolades your guests have but I’d love to hear from a 90 year old who’s been a member for most of their lives and have a deep love of the scriptures, not all knowledge can be measured in degrees. Love everything else!

I LOVE the content of every podcast you have produced!! I love the lecture style the deep wealth of information. You both do such a great job of interacting and showing your love of the gospel and Jesus Christ through your knowledge. I love the different guests and their expertise in areas and hidden gems of the continuing restoration! I have never studied the Doctrine and Covenants so deeply. The context of the sections really helps me to broaden my perspective of their time and struggles. I am so grateful for all of the time you spend. You both have amazing abilities remember and to quote prophets, it’s inspiring and you both are very relatable! Thank you!

A Breath of Fresh Air
I must admit I don’t love those roundtable discussions where people try to show off all their scriptural knowledge. And fluffy feel-good Come Follow Me isn’t my jam either. That’s why I love this podcast- Hank and John are knowledgeable but so humble as they learn with us at the feet of great scholars. I love the numerous perspectives, doses of humor, and healthy balance between devotion and scholarship. Thanks, Hank and John!
