Ear Hustle brings you the daily realities of life inside prison shared by those living it, and stories from the outside, post-incarceration. The podcast is a partnership between Nigel Poor, a Bay Area visual artist, and Earlonne Woods, formerly incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison, and was co-founded with former San Quentin resident Antwan Williams. The Ear Hustle team works in the San Francisco Bay Area, both in San Quentin State Prison’s media lab and from offices on the outside, to produce stories that are sometimes difficult, often funny and always honest. Episodes offer a nuanced view of people involved with the American prison system and those reintegrating into society after serving time.

Humanizing the incarcerated
I had never really thought much about prisoners and always just kind of relegated them to being “bad guys.”The stories from inside San Quentin humanize these prisoners. It’s not about whether or not they deserve to be there it’s about the fact that they are complicated human beings with lives and stories if their own. This is probably one of the best podcasts I’ve ever heard, and the only one that I’ve actually ever bought merchandise from. Keep up the great work guys!

Thought provoking
Missed you guys this summer. Glad to have you back. This is truly one of my favorite podcasts. You don’t shy away from the toughness of prison life but do so in such a respectful way. The inmates you interview reminds me that we are all part of humanity and deserve basic rights and respect no matter where we are in life. And tonight I’m going to consciously think about laying down on my mattress as I go to bed - as suggested in todays episode. Keep it up guys.

Really valuable
Love the work you do so much!! This is intelligent , empathetic, courageous, and interesting storytelling at a time when that combo can be hard to find. I have projects of my own to try and help with the absolute insanity far too many people face in the criminal justice system. All people deserve to be treated as people.

Motivated me to action!
I’ve learned so much through this show. And I’ve been inspired to get connected with some local organizations that work with current and formerly incarcerated people. I’m a financial coach and figured I could maybe help people improve their financial literacy to better manage their funds while incarcerated and be prepared to manage finances upon re-entry. Also I love the friendship between Nigel and Earlonne. You can hear how much they care for and respect eachother and I think that’s a big part of what makes this show SO SO good! Please keep making Ear Hustle forever!

A different perspective
I love this podcast. I’m a nurse and often care for San Quentin prisoners at the hospital I work at. I love hearing about stories and experiences people have. It makes me wish at times that our justice system was different but I guess everyone adapts to things. & it’s good to hear people often learn from the mistakes they make. We are all human, we all make mistakes, and the most humane action of it all is to learn from our experience and always try to be kind to each other.

Kudos
As a 23 year seasoned cop I am so intrigued by this podcast! It really opened my eyes to the criminal justice system after the arrest and conviction is made! We as a society fail so many people by not providing inmates means and access to programs to better themselves! Prison has becoming a revolving door and one that gets passed down generations! We must do better!!

Great show and although I ride the middle of the road with politics. Super annoying to hear you say you expected to be “met with hostility because it’s hard core trump area.” So you are saying what all trump supporters are hostile? Lol look at you guys assuming……ok for you to assume someone is racist or hostile for their political affiliation but if they assume they are hostile? #doublestandards

Spreading Fear of Trump Supporters
I love this podcast but as liberals they cannot help but spread fear and lies about Trump supporters. Those who believe Trump supporters are inherently violent are spreading crazy miss information. The majority of Trump Supporters are law abiding and just want to live according to the constitution. We disagree but we did not burn down our city’s after Biden was elected. A few people I DC do not represent all of us. Your comments are unfortunate and inappropriate and misleading. You have a responsibility to be honest.

Thee BEST podcast ever!
I love listening to E and Nig talk about what goes on behind prison walls and interview incarcerated individuals and their loved ones. These stories have helped me learn what an incarcerated person goes through, and reminded me that they are still human. It also taught me to have a greater appreciation for the finer things in life. Without giving too much information out, be sure to check it out. You won’t be disappointed 😊.

Love and compassion
I don’t recall how I stumbled across this podcast, but I know curiosity drew me in and I was instantly hooked. Earlonne, Nigel and Rahsaan bring stories and interviews that humanize an institution that most people would prefer to choose to ignore and judge the people within the judicial system as being unworthy of their time. Thank you, Earlonne, Nigel, and Rahsaan and the rest of the Ear Hustle crew for humanizing the people incarcerated and for giving your listeners an inside perspective of the lives of these prisoners. ❤️❤️❤️

A Must-Listen!
Go into your settings and make sure you start from the beginning. Listen to all of the episodes. You do not want to miss a single one. Grab your headphones and take a walk, or listen during your commute. You will become invested in the world of San Quentin and the folks who are doing time there, as well as those who volunteer and work with them. Ear Hustle does an outstanding job of giving a voice to incarcerated people and their loved ones. They shine a light of humanity into the dark corners of prison. You will get a glimpse into what it is like to be incarcerated and learn how human beings survive, and sometimes thrive, in the midst of lockdowns, isolation, and violence. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will be hooked. Nigel does a fantastic job of getting to the heart of those with whom she volunteers at San Quentin, and Earlonne and New York are great story tellers and wonderful ambassadors for the incarcerated. Then, when you’re all caught up, read or listen their book, because you will want more.

Knowing that there are organizations like these warm my heart, listening to the stories of these amazing people make me love my fellow human beings even more and make me even more proud to be a black woman. We gotta keep working hard to change the prison system but also change the laws and legislations that allows the system treat prisons as a business and use our black community as free labor, we need to close that loophole in the 13th amendment (“abolished slavery and involuntary servitude,EXCEPT AS PUNISHMENT FOR A CRIME“) left intentionally open by the forefathers to keep legal slavery. I’m proud of those kids and fathers, Keep up the great work and God bless you all!

Totally changed my view of some of the things that goes on behind the walls. I’ve been binging and my absolutely fav so far is this one: “Tell Christy I Love Her”. I’ve listened to that episode twice and teared up each time I listened to it. Introduced my wife to the show via that episode and she bawled when she listened to it. Not a fan
I wanted to love this podcast and was so excited when I stumbled upon it, however I couldn’t even get through the first episode without getting angry. The first interview is with an inmate who was in prison for attempted murder, and he stated how afraid he was of his cell mate and said it was some of the worst 6 months of his life. It was placed right in the beginning of the episode, and I just didn’t appreciate it and the placement of it, because it really felt like he/the creators were trying to gain sympathy for him. I’m sorry..I have zero sympathy for you when you tried to kill someone. Don’t complain about how awful those 6 months were for you. It just disgusted me. Maybe the rest gets better (thinking that because of all the ranting reviews), but I just can’t get myself to listen any more.

radio fulfilling its purpose!
for me a radio show can only provide so much, whether it be entertainment/distraction, news or first hand experiences, or maybe just a new perspective to a culture or peoples i take for granted... ear hustle is all that and then some! in a country with an ever increasing amount of incarcerated people, its hard to seperate the horror stories from the truth you hear about prison life and all that entails during and after incarceration. having friends and family members previously convicted ive found myself deeply engaged with all the perspectives presented on this show and while some may be hard to get through... the overall honesty and and introspection is profoundly thought provoking. much thanks to the ear hustle team for their time and effort

Ear Hustle creates a vivid audio picture of life within US prisons. Hosts Nigel and Earlonne are compassionate realists. Each episode strives to present a story or stories that while truthful, are also humane and balanced. The show has been instrumental in expanding my views of our correctional system. It also provided hours of fascinating listening during the pandemic. Well worth a listen!

Thank you so much
I cannot express how much I love this podcast. I have had a "poor" viewpoint on humans are incarcerated in general in my lifetime, I think that's part of being raised in the United States. I am constantly doing self reflection and have worked on giving people the benefit of the doubt for years now. This podcast opened my mind and my heart to give the benefit of the doubt on an even deeper level than I imagined by truly changing my outlook on humans who are incarcerated. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to creating and continuing this podcast, you are truly making a difference and that is an incredible gift to give.

The Best PODcast
This has been my favorite podcast since I first stumbled on it during a road trip up I-5. I listened to the current episode at the time (Season 2) and halfway through it I stopped and went back to season 1, episode 1 and caught up on the show. It’s the only Podcast I wait for every two weeks. It’s not so much the content, although it’s great content, it’s the energy and creative force created by the team. Listening and getting to know them has drawn me closer to the show. It’s not just the two hosts, it’s everyone involved and how they are involved in the show. The topic are great and their annual shows is (catch a kite for example) are something to look forward to. It’s clear their last episode will win awards. An in-depth research and episode on one of the miss guided ladies who fell under the spell of Charles Manson. Great episode.

I often refer to the prison population as the forgotten population. When someone is locked up they are forgotten about by their family, society, and at times themselves. Humanizing and hearing the stories of individuals that are currently in prison is eye opening. I love the topics and conversation. It provides an enlightenment on how legislation has effected society. Truly a must listen.

Fascinating and counter-revolutionary
This is a very well produced podcast with dynamic hosts and guests. It is also unfortunately an insidious project to rehabilitate the image of policing and law enforcement. This is quite literally a counter revolutionary effort that believes prison can be reformed into a force for good and that people should trust the enforcers of unjust laws. There are powerful ideas in the premise of this podcast but it’s actually very sad and disrespectful the conclusions the podcast overall puts forward. Disrespectful to center and uplift the supposed inherent goodness to be rescued from state violence, asking audience members to empathize who those who admit in their own voices that they were empowered by the force of law to dehumanize and brutalize people.

Disappointed skewed view
I’ve been listening to Ear Hustle since it’s inception, probably have never missed an episode. However, I am so disappointed to hear your podcast Cracked Windshield. I’m just shocked that you are bashing police as though they are all the same! That is like saying all prisoners deserve to rot in prison. This episode is very disappointing and appears to be pandering to a very narrow audience. I will rethink downloading your next episode.

What about natural immunity
Just listened to the episode & they are pushing the vaccine on people who already had Covid & survived. Natural immunity is better than vaccine immunity any day but I guess we’ve forgotten that in this world where everything is about Covid. This isn’t even a traditional vaccine that contains parts of the virus & is still not approved by the fda except for emergency use. Stop pushing your politically correct narrative. If you are vaccinated then great, you have nothing to fear right? Why push others to get it?

institutionalized racism made transparent.
I’ve been listening to the show since it began, and as a privileged white female, it has given me a unique window into the difficulties that people of color in this country are born into. It is tragic, and I love that the show, Brings us such a beautiful raw and heartfelt way of connecting to the myriad of challenges these people face daily.

Heartbreaking , Funny, & Challenging Storytelling
I love Ear Hustle and have recommended it to friends, family, and a few acquaintances. First hand storytelling from people whose lives have been impacted by incarceration. While deeply empathic and whole heartedly endorsing second chances, Ear Hustle does not shy away from complexities and uncomfortable facts and perspectives. Seriously worthwhile listening.

Let the inmates do the talking.
The show you have is great. Really great. Yeah , the idea is great, you guys sound great. I look forward to listening to the stories of people. One thing however, the interview is not about you but you’re making it about you . Whenever you interrupt about what coming up or even what is happening, it’s distracting. I’m listening and ready for the persons’ story and that’s interesting. Obviously you have to get it started obviously you have to control where things go and end things however I would say If you all would talk 50 to 70% less your program would be better.

Fabulous!!
It breaks my heart to hear the stories of so many incredible men who have the potential for rehabilitation, have served years for non-violent crimes, and without any reasonable hope of being released before they die. I am thrilled that this podcast has allowed me and the many and increasing number of listeners, the opportunity to get to know some of the men’s stories. This podcast is truly a revelation and public service. My thanks to everyone who participates in sharing their stories and the geniuses whose idea it was to create this. Adding to previous review after listening to all episodes in the current season... I am again just overwhelmed by the poignancy of each and every story that the expanded crew put together. It just gets better and better. THE best podcast of all out there. This and Wrongful Conviction will stir your humanity and heart. Thank you to everyone who puts these together.

Gaining Perspective
This show is truly enlightening. Its raw, unfiltered look into the life of individuals who are incarcerated. Their stories, lives and life after prison. I have to say it has absolutely changed my mind about the prison system, prison reform and even how we identify those who are incarcerated. This podcast has allowed me to better understand and gain perspective on something I know very little about. Thank you for your openness, vulnerability and taking the time to educate those of us on the outside.

The content of episodes is often painful, but there is always humor and highly educational. This country, that says it is Christian, vindictively punishes people and justifies these actions through eye for eye philosophy. It is truly all about corporate greed and controlling power, prisons for profit, free labor, and needless cruelty. More episodes are needed on how we, as the people on the outside, can help change this revolving door of the prison system.

Fabulous show about the realities of prison
This is one of my favorite shows and I look forward to each new episode. Ear Hustle shows the realities of life inside San Quentin and other prisons, and does so with compassion and heart. Listeners get a personal perspective of a system that many of us have the privilege to never have to think about. And although some of the episodes are tear-jerkers, others are really fun and lighthearted. Highly recommended to everyone!

Amazing podcast
I have listened from the very beginning. This podcast has touched me on so many levels. I’ve spent three months in jail over a probation violation. My heart is with those incarcerated. I was crying over the kids hurting when they felt abandoned by their parents. They will never realize that it’s probably only shame that has kept their parents from communicating. I HOPE that everyone knows that all they need is to be loved by their parents no matter what. All these kids want is to be listened to and loved no matter what. I’m still crying over this episode.

Listen with caution.
This is a romanticized version of criminality. It gives a “see how good I am” view of those who have been assigned to repay a debt to society but never addresses the huge amount of pain and suffering left in their wake. Their victims will forever carry the pain and memory of the actions of these felons, and unlike some on this podcast, the governor can’t just make it go away like he did for their debt to society.

This Show Gets Edited By the Prison Industrial Complex
Laughing about prison guards destroying the only property an inmate has was the last straw for my friends and I. Haha so funny! It’s odd there’s never been a episode about the cruelty of the guards or how the system destroys humans beings by overwhelming them with negative reinforcement. This show supports the worst aspects of locking people in cages by giving the enormous yet fixable aspects topic zero criticism. The first thing people from other countries think of regarding American prisons is the regular abuse and criminal treatment of prisoners. Such a shock that this isn’t even in the periphery of this shiny polished puff piece. This show is nothing but a positive PR campaign for the American prison industry. If you want a first hand, non corporate podcast about life inside a prison in America that is not hosted by a bubbly woman who hasn’t even done time, than listen to “Notes From The Pen”. It’s hosted by an actual prisoner and recorded over the phone in 15 min increments. Warts and all...

For the past few months, listening to Ear Hustle has been my husbands and I nightly bedtime listen. We’ve recently listened to all the episodes and have started again at episode one. This show is so eye opening. For starters, we’ve stopped saying “prisoner” and have started saying “incarcerated person.” The episodes will have you laughing, crying, horrified, angry, and all types of emotions you don’t even know how to label! Naj and E (and now NY!) have such an empathetic way of listening to the stories and giving a voice to the incarcerated men of SQ. I’ve learned so much from this podcast.

Emotional rollercoaster- the good kind!
This is one of my favorite podcasts ever. I’ll say this- it’s not for everyone and you need an open mind. But if you’re up for it, Ear Hustle will extract every single kind of feeling from you over the course of its seasons. You’ll laugh, cry, cringe, get angry. Sometimes you’ll be mad at the men on the inside, sometimes at the system. But we all have a lot to learn from these episodes. Seemingly effortlessly, EH weaves together stories, interviews, music, and more to paint a picture that is not very pretty but is full of bright spots. Buckle up because it WILL make you uncomfortable. You’ll examine right and wrong, justice, your own bias. But at the end I guarantee you’ll walk away seeing the humanity in incarcerated people.

Eye Opening!
Growing up, i always thought “criminals” were just bad people. After growing and knowing people (including my baby brother) who have spent time locked up, my perception completely changed. I love how this podcast shows every aspect. Everyone has the ability to learn, grow, and change! We need to work more on rehabilitation instead of punishment. It really helps open your eyes to how skewed the system can be. Everyone should listen! Thank you all for everything you do! You’re helping to change the world! ♥️

I absolutely love this podcast. I love the relationship between Nigel and Earlonne. They compliment each perfectly. The stories from inside San Quentin are raw, honest, heart-wrenching but at times light and funny. It’s human. My biological father was an inmate at San Quentin 30+ years ago. This podcast has given me a different perspective on what his life on the inside might have been like. The music is also on point!

Compassion, Light, and Wit
This show is a light. It is a gift. Raw stories from the inside & outside of San Quentin prison. Stories of the lived experience of real men & women who are incarcerated as well as those who have been let out & are facing the hardships of getting on their feet. The hosts deal with difficult topics with a great deal of compassion and understanding, along with humor & a beautiful lightheartedness. Well worth the time to understand a world you may not know much about. Utterly engaging on all levels.

I have a friend locked up. When we speak I feel like I can’t relate, because I can’t relate. Since I’ve been listening to this podcast I have a new perspective on how he’s been living these 30 years. Not all men locked are monsters. Sometimes they were young and foolish. Weren't we all at some point? Or heck aren’t we still? Thank you for opening up my eyes. Namaste.

My absolute favorite podcast!
I have been listening to Ear Hustle form the very start. (Thanks to another great podcast called “Snap Judgement” mentioning them) I am so I love with it! I have leaned so much. My mom raised me to “Not judge a person till you walk a mile in their shoes”. I try to live by that. When this podcast came out, I realized I honestly didn’t know much of anything when it came to what it’s like in prison or what people in prison were like. I didn’t know their stories. This has been an amazing eye opener to me. A much needed one. I feel it has helped me understand so much. I am so grateful for Ear Hustle. The first year, I bought the oh so cool t-shirt. I have had many people get excited when they see it and tell me they listen too. I support them every year too. Their message is extremely important for everyone to hear. Thank you, Ear Hustle. Namaste 🙏🏼

Thought provoking, mind expanding
Every week, you challenge me on my preconceived notions and beliefs. You bring humanity, humor, and reality to touchy, difficult subjects. I have grown to really care about you guys and have listened to the Earlonne is freed episode several times, literally cheering out loud. I just listened to the episode about sexual offenders, which you warned would be difficult, and indeed it was not easy listening. But you remind us that every adult, and certainly every offender has a story, a childhood that formed them, and that we love, care, pity, hate or revile them depending on when we hear their story. Keep doing the good work and challenging us. Glad you are keeping your humanity and humor through this particular tough time!

This podcast makes me smile
I don’t write many reviews, but I had to set aside time to write an amazing review for Ear Hustle! It is hands down one of the best podcasts out there! It was recommended to me by a friend a few days ago & I can’t stop listening! Earlonne Woods & Nigel Poor were made for podcasts & they compliment one another’s so well! The topics they touch on are genuine, real & raw. They shed light on a population I feel very easily gets overlooked. When I’m listening to each episode I envision being in the yard and becoming friends with some of the very light hearted individuals in San Quentin. This is a must listen to podcast & I highly recommend you sharing with your friends! Thanks Nige & E

Podcast that shows how pain, suffering leads to beautiful things.
Loved this podcast because it skips all the hooplas about whether inmates had control over their actions...and whether justice was served. This podcast is more about how strife, suffering and pain in a paradoxical way made them more compassionate, more humaine ready to blossom.

I need to thank you Erlonne and Nigel. This is a perfect podcast to while away the quarantine hours!! I think the best part is that Erlonne can use the words, “indeed and indubitably” better than I!! I mean, he really knows when to use indeed!! I doubt I’ve ever used it! Ha. I didn’t realize that Quentin was level 2, but I am extremely happy (and grateful) that there are classes for the men. Those are the most important to mature and improve the person. They are much better for our society! Thank you❤️

From one inmate to another
I just started listening to Season 1 and I’m hooked. I was incarcerated at Anamosa State Penitentiary in Anamosa, IA in 2014 and at Fort Dodge Correctional Facility in Fort Dodge, IA in 2017. I used to be an IV Meth addict and I currently have 3 years clean. I owe most of it to Fort Dodge and all the positive programs that they had at the prison. It makes me so happy to hear that there are good prisons in California that have all these great programs to help our fellow inmates who want to change. Thank you so much for this podcast. And I want to hear about COMMISSARY!!! I looooooooove me some commissary!!! Stay Strong Dopey Nation!

Sensitive, compelling and darn entertaining
This podcast is so needed. I used to live in Louisiana which has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Most of the students I taught had parents and relatives in prison and some even we’re incarcerated themselves yet the world of prison in America was totally “other” to me. This podcast gives a very specific account of the experiences of life in a certain place—San Quentin—but it humanizes the world of prisons and incarcerated people in such an important way. The storytelling is excellent and one thing that I always come away thinking is, wow what ingenuity these men have. There’s a certain type of adaptation to the environment and human urge to find ways to thrive and make do that the men featured exemplify. And that’s something I look forward to hearing about. To the producers of the show: amazing work!

Amazing
This is the first podcast I have been hooked to. This is such an eye opener for those who think “who ever is in jail deserves to be there.” I had an outlook on murderers before that has really changed with this podcast. People CAN change. It definitely can take many many years to do so but it is possible, and everyone should have a second chance at life. It’s also crazy to hear how many people have long incarcerations for the smallest things. This truly makes you appreciate your life, and understand that we are all so blessed and lucky just to have a bed each night and be able to eat. I hope that everyone in any jail around the world can find the strength to keep on going.

Learning about humanity
I’ve never learned so much about what it means to be human than what I have through this show. Prisoners are often dehumanized and I love how the personalities on this show just shine

Fascinating.
Get a genuine feel for life inside a men’s prison and hear the real, funny, educated, sometimes troubled and above all human stories behind the charge sheets. It’s a show that, at its heart, is warm, sympathetic, and non-judgmental. And fun!

Love love this podcast - honest and raw
This was recommended by a friend and I didn’t think I’d love this as much as I have. I don’t know anyone incarcerated but this is a fascinating and insightful view into prison life. The stories are heartwarming, tragic, emotional, raw, honest and devastating with a twist of humor. This is exceptional and well done and I’m recommending it to everyone I know.

Changed the way I think of the prison system
I come from a town with five or six prisons and prisoners are not looked upon fondly. This podcast helped me see prisoners like real people and members of society. Great podcast, highly recommend!

Absolutely Amazing
I never would have picked this show out for myself if it weren’t for hearing a preview of it through another Radiotopia podcast. The network puts out such high quality content that I had to give it a go...I’ve been hooked since day one! Hearing the personal stories of past and present inmates exposes me to a world I never knew much about. I especially enjoy the storytelling achieved through sound. It really gives you a sense of what the environment is like.

Has changed my life
This podcast has opened my mind and my eyes. There aren’t words that I can put together to thank the team and the inmates for allowing themselves to be vulnerable and share it with us. Thank you so very much.

I love the chemistry between Nigel and her cohosts. I love all the stories. They personalize criminals, and provide a true view of life incarcerated. I thought the dynamic would change once E got released but it’s still great! I wish nothing but success for this podcast in 2020

The very definition of eye-opening
This show is so informative, so real, so human and, perhaps most surprisingly, provides a genuine sense of hope in some fairly dark times of our humanity.

This show is so beautiful
I have never looked past a person’s crime but listening to Ear Hustle has helped me see that a person is not the mistake they made and there’s so much more to them. Earlonne I’m so proud of you and I was so happy to hear about you and Sarah. She seems like a person with a beautiful soul. I have a T-shirt idea but I need your size. Nigel there are no words to explain how I love your commitment to getting these stories out. My son is in school for journalism and I encourage him to listen to this podcast.

- Do You Know Who I Am?For years, we’ve asked incarcerated people to speculate on the difference between life inside a men’s prison and inside a women’s. For some, the law has been life-changing; for others… not so much. Big thanks to Guim'Mara Berry and Acting Warden Oak Smith for their support of the show, and to Lt.
