Excellent
As many other reviewers have said, this podcast is simultaneously fascinating and infuriating. Amy does a phenomenal job of digging into the history of oil in the United States and clarifies how it became part of our cultural identity. And despite the often upsetting nature of revealing all these truths, I binged all of the episodes over the course of a couple of weeks because it was so engaging. Thanks to Amy and the rest of the Drilled team for shining a light on how we got to where we are today, and for reminding me that there are ways out of the mess we’re in.

Good content - awful podcast execution
Great content - awful podcast execution. 100 episodes that could literally be just 5 long episodes. Each is 15 minutes with 10 minutes of replay + advertising. All I get is creepy music and a short build up to the next episode. So annoying, sorry.

By far my favourite podcast
I’ve generally struggled to get into podcasts because I can never really keep up with the info. This podcast has stories that keep you interested, with a good mix of narrative and interviews in an easy to understand way. It breaks climate issues down into concrete examples rather than vague ideas. I also like how the ads on the podcast are for things viewers would actually be interested, rather than the standard sponsors that other podcasts tend to use. I guess my only complaint is that I wish episodes came out more often, because if so it would probably be the only thing I listened to.

Eye opening and essential
The newest series of shows (about how fossil fuel companies put together lesson plans for educators to use) continue the excellent tradition of the show. Who needs more podcasts, you may ask. Well, this one gives you a lot of information you need to think about how to address climate change and why the fight is so hard and so many are resistant. And it’s not overwhelming listeners with episodes (a good thing in our Information Age). Quality over quantity. Excellent work.

Production issues make it unlistenable
Amy, you have a great voice. Don’t listen to these people. I am extremely sensitive to vocal fry and annoying voices—yours is incredibly enjoyable to listen to. But please, for the LOVE OF GOD, the producers of this show need to up their game. 1. Master your audio levels so my ears don’t get blown out every time someone gets excited or moves close to the mic. 2. STOP playing music behind the entire episode! Music is used to mark transitions in podcasts. When I hear that annoying frenetic track going in the background the whole time, my brain is constantly on edge waiting for a transition rather than listening to the content. It’s very distracting. 3. Either make longer episodes, or get rid of the padding. Episodes are extremely short yet are still padded with unnecessary recaps of the last episode and previews of the next. Plus an ultra long introduction with that awful music track playing behind it the whole time. The actual substance of the episodes can be so good, but then it’s over before it even started. Very frustrating as a listener. 4. It seems Amy has started talking very slowly this latest season, which is annoying as well. If this isn’t due to a physical reason, please change back to your normal cadence. Trust your audience. They can change the playback speed if they aren’t absorbing the information well enough. I really love the content of this show, but the issues above (especially the incessant music) makes it very difficult to enjoy overall.

A lot of things just “clicked” for me
I’ve been getting a lot out of this podcast since discovering it recently, but the July 30, 2021 episode explained so many confusing things about plastics and covid that I had observed but couldn’t quite grasp before. I appreciate the hushed tone of the storytelling, the solid journalism, and the unapologetic perspective that we can do better for this world than we’ve done.

Don’t hesitate
Drilled is seriously good, I heard about this podcast via the hot take podcast as well as how to save a planet podcast and well I hesitated because I was afraid, to have the wool pulled from my eyes completely. Three months later I finally dove in and binged all of seasons 1-3 and I must say once again, don’t hesitate just listen! Amy is as great a story teller as she is an investigator. Rather than pulling the wool, it was peeled back gently and gracefully with eloquence context and intelligence.

Question Everything
In addition to being a thoughtful, well researched and informative podcast, it reminds us of the power of not passively consuming what you hear, read and see. The format is very effective at distilling complex topics and then allowing the listener to continue to follow the threads that interest them. My only quibble is that the episode notes do not provide sources or links, which would be helpful and improve listenability. I find myself stopping often to capture information for follow up.

Well researched and documented
This is a detailed historical narrative of how the fossil fuel industry diverted a fraction of their billions in profits to misrepresent the facts, redirect attention away from their polluting and corruption, and overwhelm underfunded science and a fragile democratic process. And the narrative continues with fossil fuel industry corrupting governments to delay or prevent regulation and ensure they can continue polluting and extracting wealth from heritage national resources without consequence. The facts presented are verifiable from independent sources, and leave the industry without a rebuttal, only continued misdirection and green washing.

5 stars for content I wish we didn't need
Journalist Amy Westervelt had a great idea: Tell climate stories like true crime ones. With each passing season, including the upcoming July one on the fracking and plastics boom, Drilled's storytelling goes deeper, shows more humanity, and knits together the actions by individuals in the fossil fuel industry to the larger fabric of the system of power and $ they operate and thrive in. Essential listening to understand not only the facts of Climate Change but the ways the fossil fuel industry tries to hide its influence.

good but need to improve
for an important and relevant science based podcast i think over the top inaccurate language is egregious. Specifically; saying “mid two thousands”. Such an ugly clumsy mouthful. and if that is not reason enough in consideration of us who have to listen to it, then maybe the logic is enough reason. that would be around the year 2500, or in the range of 2400-2600. if you want to talk about the years 2000-2010 you have plenty of choices. “oughts”, “naughts”, “naughties”, “early 21st century” or just saying specific numbers like “2003 to 2005”. thanks for reading this. i hope to help.

Amy Westervelt’s reporting is of the utmost importance in this age of disinformation. I learned of it from another podcast, Gaslit Nation, and started listening from the very first episode, going forward. Definitely the way to catch up, since each episode in a season builds on the one before, and each season builds on the previous one. Between this, and Gaslit Nation, I feel like a huge, hideous picture is starting to form, connecting everything wrong with our present society with everything else. A whole ecosystem of disinformation and self dealing. She should meet up with author Nina Schick. Next step is to go support her on Patreon, to help her realize her goal of complete independence in her reporting.

Great, but ...
It’s it kind of disingenuous to complain about fossil fuel companies and their misinformation campaign when you love to interweave commercials into your podcast? I think it would be much better if you did like others and said - now for a break or something at the start of the show that you are going to promote a product which may of may not have anything to do with the climate crisis vs. the main body of work about the climate crisis.

This is extremely detailed reporting that truly illustrates how we got to the state we’re in today with America’s response to climate change. Good idea, immature execution
I’ve listened to this podcast since it first came out. Lots of interesting info especially if you’re new to the world of fossil fuels, but sometimes the exaggeration seems self-defeating. Of course we expect and relish an anti-petroleum bent on a show like this, but I’m disappointed listening to almost every episode recently as the narrator continually goes beyond facts mixed with justifiable personal beliefs and ventures into sensationalism. We’ve got enough of that in our current U.S. administration and right-wing pundits. The rest of us should not stoop to that level, and it saddens me to see that more and more are doing so. I do give it three stars because she still does discuss many interesting topics, reports and data, but please listen with a grain of salt and try to follow up on this show’s claims. The truth is out there and it’s often bad, but we shouldn’t need this type of exaggeration and distortion of basic facts to make us realize it.

Awesome podcast, terrible adverts. I’m pro-CBD use BUT CBD is not a cure all, and for a podcaster that professionally dismantles propagandist bs you should be ashamed of yourself for peddling a false narrative that your CBD sponsor will cure everything under the sun. Your sponsors are a group of powerful elites lying to the public about their product to make a ludicrous profits while ironically contributing to the problem of commercial pollution. Amazing podcast.
My high school drafting class semester project was a solar house. Solar panels had been installed on the White House. MIT and the department of energy setup a test array of different types of solar panels in a field in my town. It was common knowledge that we as a nation had to get off fossil fuels. Then Regan was elected president, the solar panels were removed from the White House, the test array of solar panels was abandoned... and 40 years later here we. This amazing podcast explores why and how we were led astray.

Great climate podcast that keeps getting better
I've been a fan of Drilled since the beginning. At a time when there were far fewer climate podcasts, it was one of the best. Now, it's still one of the best. A handful of others achieve a similar degree of relevance and engagement, but none surpass it The true crime theme is a great way to tap into an existing popular genre. It's also a great way to reframe climate denial and delay as intentionally unethical and criminal behavior for profit rather than a mere difference of political opinion. Each season delves into a great deal of well-researched detail about a different aspect of the problem. I'm on Season 3 now, which uncovers the historical roots of the "Mad Men of Climate Denial." It's informative, compelling, and like any good true crime story, I can't wait to hear what comes next. Check it out today. You'll be glad you did!

This podcast offers so much well-researched information on the manufacturing of climate denial and the zeitgeist of the US through the last few decades. Amy once replied to me on Twitter 🤯, answering my question about an episode of the Ezra Klein Show she had listened to. That gave me an opportunity to juxtapose the two, and Drilled wins hands down. Not really apples to apples, the draw of EKS is the guest of the day, but every episode of Drilled is excellent and worth the time you’re putting in.

Informative podcast
Good info (although clearly politically biased, but the facts are facts). Audio is a bit weird - like she’s whispering but super sensitive mic to pick up all the mouth sounds. Bonus episodes/interview are boring - give us more narrative journalism

Podcasters: Sound quality matters a lot!
I’m very interested in the information and opinions on this podcast, but after three different episodes wrecked my nerves with crashing dishes in the background, I gave up. I tried different earbuds as well as just the phone speaker, and several different podcast-players, but nothing helped. I listen to a wide variety of podcasts every day, and I know that good podcasters find a quiet place to do their interviews (on both ends if by phone) without dishes, sirens, jets or other sharp noises in the background. It’s not expensive or difficult. If you won’t listen to your own podcast as an audience member would, on a phone or in the car, you may not know. At the very least get a friend to listen the way any other audience member would, and give you honest feedback. I can’t be the only listener who unsubscribes because of careless sound quality.

Changed My Life
Season 1 of Drilled literally changed my life by opening my eyes to the breadth and depth of what corporations like Exxon have done to us. Every human should listen to this. At times, the storytelling falls off and the delivery feels a bit dry, but don't let that stop you. This is deeply important reporting.

Why Hasn’t This Existed Before?
Listening to Drilled, it’s such an obvious approach to this that I’m amazed it’s not more common: man-made climate change, and the sheer denial of facts around it, told in the style of a true crime story.

Five stars because I think every American should listen to this. We must know the truth about the fossil fuel industry! But, I cannot stand Amy’s recordings. It sounds like she’s recording them in a closet at home, whispering and she adds really distracting inflection. I want to recommend this to everyone but I get so distracted by her inflection that I’m hesitant to share this particular podcast versus just literature on the topic. Great content, bad audio
Let me begin by saying I very much appreciate this pod's message and its mission. Listened to every season. However, as of the last 3 eps, the audio is very poor quality, with random silences, popping, high bass, clipping, etc. Played on multiple devices so I know it's not me. Guys, this is season 3 of this series, not season 1. Please get your act together!

This is an astonishingly great podcast.
A few months ago I learned that just 100 companies have been the source of more than 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions in recent decades. This podcast explores how the fossil has spent vast amounts of money discrediting its own climate change research and persuading government officials and the general public that the climate catastrophe facing us is still debatable. They want us to believe that the solutions to this crisis are so cumbersome and uncertain we shouldn’t even try to change the status quo. If you want to understand the inner workings of this insidious disinformation campaign, you will want to subscribe to this unique, beautifully produced podcast.

They Say the Proof is in the Pudding...
Grab a spoon and start with Season one. Very eye-opening information. We know things aren't always as they seem. We know there are occasional corrupt activities in the corporate and political world, but corruption is more rampant than we know. The word conspiracy has been made into a joke by those who commit them, and anyone who utters the word is met with chuckles. There is no other word to describe what the fossil fuel industry, married with political allies, has done. Drilled does a great job presenting the facts in an organized fashion, features great interviews with industry research scientists and those impacted by the effects of climate change, and pulls the wool away from our eyes after years of being duped by the very people we thought we could trust. We need people like the team of Drilled doing this kind of work to bring the truth to light. Then we can work toward finding real answers. Listen and share it with your friends.

Excellent reporting, Riveting Content
I knew that climate denial was a false narrative promoted by the fossil fuel industry, but I didn't realize how deep it ran or the extent of the damage they have caused. Perhaps the the most valuable part of this reporting is to bring awareness to the techniques the connected and powerful have used to spread propaganda and build profitable lies into our cultural fabric. How can we undo the polorization these greedy monsters have created?

Great research, too repetitive
A lot of factual data and great research here. The format is 20 min episodes. But there is far too much repitition. Each episode only nets about 10 min(max) of content that hasn’t been stated previously. “Previously on Drilled...” I’m impatient and find it mildly annoying talking about what you’ve already talked about every episode after the 1st. Wonderful coverage of the impacts of global warming
Helped me to see the topic from a different POV. I had been completely sold on the “Personal Responsibility” perspective. I always wondered why people were having such a hard time with the topic, so much suspicion and lack of understanding of the scientific method. I’ve learned through this podcast of the past and ongoing efforts to distort the science at the expense of us all. I would recommend this podcast to anybody that is interested in the topic. Especially those naysayers that claim its political propaganda. They would probably get the most out of it if they would just keep an open mind. If nothing else they might learn the other sides perspective.

Compelling
As a social scientist, I grapple with the question of how climate change denial became intertwined with certain identities and ideologies. This podcast has been incredibly helpful to me as I've tried to wrap my head around that issue. It's interesting, well-narrated, and revelatory. My only critique is that sometimes it seems a bit repetitive -- because the episodes are short, often a given episode seems to be spending proportionally a considerable amount of time going over and reusing clips from the previous one. I would prefer fewer, longer (30 min) episodes with less repetition.

Bad 17 minute format with long intros and outros
The content is good. The packaging is inhumane. Each episode is only 17 minutes with at least 3-5 minutes dedicated to ads, reviews of the last episode, promos for the next, and more wasted time. Listening was so infuriating that I will never listen any podcast series is smaller than 30 minute segments. Non-series podcasts can be shorter, since they do not bother with long, interupting, intros and outros.

Inaccurate and misleading
In the 1970s, the fear was Peak Oil, that is, the world running out of oil, and the onset of a new Ice Age, NOT global warming. This supposed investigative journalist selectively takes interview quotes about events from that time out of context to rewrite a non-factual revisionist history to promote an alarmist view. Shameful.

Deserves a Pulitzer
This is a great series. The immense volume of well funded false equivalent data out there is too much for any non-scientist to sort through. Years ago, I was beginning to doubt what was already proven to be true, but I kept digging because the deniers became too angry and vehement with their denials; a sure sign that something suspicious was afoot. This series does a good job of laying out, in an easy to understand and concise presentation, exactly how the very effective misinformation campaigns have been conducted. They deserve a Pulitzer for this one.

fossil fuel industries actions to mislead the public
In-depth look into the fossil fuel industries 30+ years active disinformation campaign to mislead the public and control the government in order to protect their interests over that of the public and the environment we live in. The media manipulation is the road map that was developed by the chemical industries and now refined by foreign governments (Russia etc) in manipulation countries and the global economy. It’s interesting to think that the ideals of the information was intended to increase knowledge and democracy throughout the world.

Wow. 10/10 would recommend!
This is a podcast that is focused on the social fuel (no pun intended) around the fiery debate on climate change. If you’re looking for scientific explanations for climate change, this is not your podcast. Rather, this investigation reflects the social and political pressures from industries on climate change, and the evidence is shocking. It would be great if Drilled offered some ways for the public to get involved directly with these situations, but sadly I think this would be near impossible. It’s a podcast that jars your worldview into seeing what really is - corruption is real, and climate change is the most pressing issue of this lifetime.

Great Podcast - Listened to everything in one day!
I really enjoyed this podcast. I'm highly interested in the subject matter though. If you're not already interested in the subject matter then it might only be a 4 star podcast for you. But I think it is a great walk through the history of the climate denial industry. The format is a little different than other podcasts in the genre, the episodes are really short and there's no "in the field" reporting/recording. On a whole, they seem to be on a bit of a budget, most of the interviews are done over phones or skype or something and have fairly low-fi quality. But the information comes across clearly enough and the story is strung together nicely. I learned a lot and might listen to it again if new episodes don't come out fast enough.

This is a very overdramatized podcast.
I believe in climate change. But, as an avid listener of podcasts, I can safely say that although the content is of this podcast good, the productions is not. It is produced with over the top horror music which, I understand the point of—to impress upon how dangerous the people who are doing this are, and how insidious a problem all of this really is. This dramatic backdrop is ultimately distracting and even corny at times, which detracts from the overall seriousness of the issue at worst, and makes the podcast feel like a judgmental lecture at best. I do enjoy it and I hope that it finds a way to strike a less harried and hopeless tone. I understand climate change is real and scary; but my brain shuts down when it all looks hopeless.

Binge-listened to all of season 1. Don’t do this if you have blood pressure issues or are a big fan of Exxon. I consider myself to be moderately well versed on climate change, but S1 was a real eye opener. Waiting for S2!

I wanted to like this, but the underreporting turned me off
Really interesting focus, but the podcast feels like it loses validity in its presentation. The host claims in ep1 that they put the missing puzzle pieces of climate change denial together in this show. But the use of too-long/rambling interview clips and the repetition of facts throughout gives the appearance of a team trying to cover up that they didn’t collect enough audio/information. This feeling is compounded when binge listening by the fact that short episodes start and end with recaps/previews of surrounding episodes. It’s a shame because this is actually a topic that is dense with potential sources, and the structure of this podcast is very intuitive and easy to follow.

Our Peril
Drilled chronicles corporate involvement and arguably criminal misuse of power through time in our collectively shared calamity. My hope is that DRILLED stands out in a sea of good podcasts, and gains listenership. The production is captivating, with good audio effects and intriguing narrative. I have not yet finished listening to the series. I hope that it is prescriptive as well. My fear is that most people still don’t have podcast listening on their radar, and that the urgency of global warming and environmental degradation does not reach a wide audience. I am happy that there are productions like Drilled that counter Madison Avenue, White House assisted barrage of denialism.

Listen! Easy, helpful, binge worthy. If you want to help yourself and others get out from under the effects of a decades long propaganda campaign to sow doubt about climate change and who is culpable for it this is a great place to begin.

Underwhelming. Needs more facts.
I’m an engineer in the oil and gas industry and tried to binge this podcast to get another perspective. I fully believe in climate change but was hoping for more factual information on oil companies manipulating beliefs and providing more evidence of PR teams purposefully misinforming the public. More effort could have been made to make this podcast informative as opposed to just bashing the industry (starting with the ominous music...)

Really wanted to like
I thought it was well organized, historical insight was very interesting, it flowed nicely.. but for a show that wanted to reveal bias in an industry it hypocritically did so with so much bias. It came across almost arrogant in doing so. The music score itself is an example of bias. MOST IMPORTANTLY, however, there was almost NO SCIENCE DISCUSSED though out this series. The entire counterpoint to the climate denial was but science says it’s real ...then went on to give ,seriously, no scientific evidence , no discussion of specific findings. Except maybe one...the crab example.. in which they gave no figures for what levels of that acid were prior to “elevation”. As someone who thinks climate change is real , I am so frustrated. So so frustrated.

After reading Merchants of Doubt, I thought I already knew the story of how oil companies wagged war on science, but there is a lot I still didn’t know (e.g. tactics for shifting responsibility for global warming from oil companies to individuals). Drilled is brings great storytelling and science to show listeners the way energy companies are waging a war on the truth in the name of profits.

Remember when cigarettes were safe?
Remember when cigarettes were safe? Remember when lead was a great thing to add to all sorts of products? Remember when hysterical scientists with unknown (but suspicious) motives tried to change things? When they tried to shine a light on the harm? And remember how the American tobacco industry was forced to come out and defend itself? Ha! When the fossil fuel industry struggled to keep that lead in our fuel so it could spew into our schools, homes, playgrounds? Of course the fossil fuel industry is now using the same playbook, but on an larger, more sophisticated scale. DRILLED dives deeply into this story and does so in easy bite-sized installments. “If you’re not outraged you’re not paying attention.”

Everyone needs to listen to Drilled
This podcast has shed light on to the biggest crime humanity has ever faced. And the worst part is, the criminals are getting away with it in plain sight. No matter your political or religious beliefs, everyone should listen to this with an open mind. We need to open our eyes and realize that humans are the main cause of climate change; and not only that, but the greediest, power hungry individuals that have chosen money over our future are the biggest culprits. Thank you to Drilled for taking on this enormous task of revealing who is to blame, and what we can do to start changing our culture’s sentiment towards climate change. We need big oil to face the crimes they have committed and republicans and democrats alike need to put their differences aside and come together to advocate for change.

This podcast is fact based and balanced. But it is to short and leaves out too much. For example, fossil fuel’s economic roles in places like Russia and Venezuela. Or the lead in leaded gasoline.

Important
It’s well written and the topic is important. My issues deal with the style of the podcast as opposed to the content. The music is overwrought at times, the synth reminiscent of late 90s true crime news shows. This topic is too important for melodrama. Also, the narrator has a very quiet voice and there are many times that I can’t hear her over the music.

This expose into the way the Oil companies covered up the impact of climate change is fascinating and jaw-dropping. The widespread skepticism of global warming we see today is a testament to all that this podcast serves to report upon, and begs the question of what the world might look like if Oil companies had instead focused their funding on renewable energies rather than politicizing climate science.

Builds in intrigue
I would prefer to give a 4.5 to a 5 star rating but I really hope folks will listen to this. As an environmental activist I found the first couple episodes a little obvious, but it definitely builds in intrigue. The mendacity and treachery of the fossil fuel companies cannot be overstated. I hope this series continues. It would benefit from a thorough expose of what the pipeline (and other infrastructure) companies do to shut down protest against them, and the horrendous, criminal treatment of the indigenous people of the U.S. and Canada whose land and WOMEN are continually being taken from them by this industry (if you think I’m being dramatic, google “missing indigenous women near oil and gas plants”).

I just got done listening to the podcast. It managed to keep me interested from start to finish. However, I feel if the podcast was a little bit less left leaning the message would have came across more true/ not slanted. Lastly, I feel as if ALL of the people interviewed for this podcast were in support of her view , some neutral people would be nice to balance it out. Still, Hats off to the team that created this.

But....
I have no doubt that climate change is occuring and that human efforts and playing a major driver in the change but what sort of a world will be have without oil? Everything we use has petroleum in a part of it, whether it be the components or what brought those products to the store. If we stop using oil then where will we be? It seems like we should stop pointing fingers and start working together to work out how we can clean things up instead.

In January 2023, a new study showing that over 12 percent of childhood asthma cases can be linked to gas stoves took over the discourse. - Drilled presents MongaBay Explores the Congo Basin: The "Heart of the World" Is at a Turning PointThe Congo Basin contains the world’s second-largest rainforest at a staggering 178 million hectares (just under 440 million acres). It is also one of the biggest carbon sinks on the planet, containing 29 billion metric tons of carbon in its vast peatlands under the rich forest. One of the basin’s key countries, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), aims to open up protected areas and forested peatlands to oil and gas development, with many experts warning of dire consequences to the rainforest and the world’s climate, should these peatlands be disturbed. Sound familiar? On the heels of our Guyana season, we wanted to bring you this deep dive from the great folks over at MongaBay on what's happening in the Congo right now. - S8 Ep7 | The Global Oil RushWhat's happening in Guyana isn't just happening there. All over the globe, oil companies are racing to tap as many of the remaining fossil fuel reserves as they can. This week, we're joined by Rolling Stone reporter Jeff Goodell for a story about what the global oil rush looks like in another part of the world: Namibia. - Drilled Apr 18 · 39m S8 Ep6 | Old-School GreenwashingWhen we first started reporting this story, people unfamiliar with it would suggest talking to local environmental groups. Surely they would have something to say about a massive new polluting industry springing up in the country! But every group we could find operating in Guyana had taken money from Exxon or one of its partners. Several have made promotional videos praising the project. They argue that oil money is no dirtier than any other source of funding, and if it’s there, they may as well take it to do good conservation projects.0 comments0
- S8 Ep5 | On Global Poverty and Global WarmingThe tension between addressing global poverty and acting on the climate crisis is one the fossil fuel industry, and those who carry water for it, have been increasingly leaning on in recent years. We asked Dr. Narasimha Rao to join us this week to get into the details of that conversation, where there are and aren't tradeoffs, and what his Decent Living Energy Project at Yale can tell us about how to solve both global crises at once.0 comments0
- S8 Ep4 | Constitutional ViolationMelinda Janki has filed seven separate cases aimed at blocking oil drilling in Guyana, but only one of them explicitly names climate change as a problem the project is guaranteed to exacerbate. It’s a constitutional case that invokes Guyana’s constitutional right to a healthy environment—an amendment Janki herself helped to write. Plaintiffs Dr. Troy Thomas and Quedad DeFreitas argue that the government’s choice to fast-track permits and oil production threatens their right to a healthy environment, and the rights of future generations too. The government of Guyana argues that, ironically, it needs oil money to adapt to climate change.0 comments0
- S8 Ep3 | Unlimited LiabilityOne person in Guyana knows both the inner workings of oil companies and the intricacies of Guyanese environmental law better than most. Melinda Janki grew up in Guyana, but went to university at Oxford and then worked as in-house counsel for oil giant BP before returning home. Decades ago she started to help strengthen the country’s environmental laws. In 2018 she started filing suits against the government to block offshore drilling. Her latest suit demands that ExxonMobil be liable for any environmental damage caused to Guyana in case of an offshore catastrophe.0 comments0
- S8 Ep2 | The ContractAfter a year’s worth of pressure from local press and civil society groups, the Guyanese government released its contract with ExxonMobil to the public in December 2017. The IMF calls it an unfair deal for Guyana. Some local leaders start calling on government officials to try to renegotiate the contract, but others say that’s a fool’s errand and the only place to fight the contract is in court.0 comments0
- S8 Ep1 | The BoomFive years ago, Kiana Wilburg was a new reporter when ExxonMobil executives and Guyanese government officials announced they had found oil 40 miles offshore. Wilburg and her newsroom had to quickly learn about the industry and this company that was suddenly so influential in their country and were left with just one question: exactly what kind of a deal had the country signed onto?
