Dead End: A New Jersey Political Murder Mystery

New Jersey is a corrupt state from the top to the bottom.
As has ever been true, follow the money which is lining pockets. This is a terrific podcast, but I am SO happy I don’t live in New Jersey.

Reporting done by a pro!
This is excellent and is done in the same vein as Serial which is the reason I turned into a true crime junkie and I’m pretty sure most of America also headed down the same path. It is done by a professional and has plenty of inside baseball information from family and friends. I’m so over two idiots reading a Wikipedia entry or even worse lifting verbatim stories from magazines and books without citation. Half the time I’m screaming during shows because the hosts are giving incorrect info or mispronouncing important facts!!! There are a lot of LAZY hosts out there. This is a juicy story and one that hasn’t been told on 8 other shows already. Great listen so far, about to start 4th episode now!

Dead End
I was not familiar with the tragic story of the Sheridans until I listened to the Dead End podcast from NYC Studios. Nancy planned and executed some amazing and diligent research, resulting in producing and narrating an excellent podcast. Thank you for covering the story and sharing it via the podcast. Very well done..!

Superb
Finally a podcast by a serious journalist who presents this compelling story without adding any personal, ridiculous commentary. Best podcast in the crime category I have listened to…and I’ve listened to a lot!

Series could be much shorter!
I found this story to be too padded with lots of extraneous (& boring) info eg Attorney General’s office, Jimmy Hoffer (what relevance, really??!). Would’ve been much better and more interesting to get rid of all the distractive rabbit trails that went no where and just kept to the facts of WHO KILLED THE SHERIDANS. I got all the way through to Episode 5 and gave up. All I got from this was the general story and then what a shoddy, poor excuse of a police dept who contaminated the scene and brushed over evidence in order to hold to an assumption they made early on to the exclusion of all other potential leads. I much prefer listening to Investigative Journalist, Delia De Ambrio of “Counter Clock” podcast. She goes deep and explores all the evidence and leads pertinent to the case. Plus she is a great narrator to boot. I’ll not return to this podcast.

What a web! So sad for the family. This program was so well done. Great narration and very impressed by her ability to keep all items clear while telling the listener about all the insanity that is NJ politics.

Very interesting
There is much omitted from this “investigation.” Facts about the personal health, dynamics, and relationship of the Sheridans are missing. Exactly why the police labeled this a murder / suicide is not revealed, either by the police or the reporter.

Dead End - an amazing story of NJ political inconsistencies and influence on the justice system
Bravo team! I am sure this series took a lot of work and threads. I feel sad that this is still a dead end and will follow the pod cast site to hopefully see if closure for the Sheridan family is ever rightfully provided. Shame on politicians who cave at the sign of influence, money, or confrontation. Very sad

Several times a week a check for new episode, thrilled when one has been released.
Because the release of the new episode follows the research, I feel like I’m in the room real time. Although I’m not from New Jersey, the players and perhaps suspects are national figures which has the effect of localizing the story. Finally the author is a great storyteller able to walk that fine line between reporting Ethics and good storytelling.

Well told mystery…
…that still deserves a solution. Looking forward to updates as the NJ AG & FBI conduct investigations into both the murders and the shameful excuse for an initial investigation. Fingers crossed family and friends find justice and peace.

Political mobsters driven by corruption & greed
A tragic story worthy of this tremendous narrative produced by WNYC & Nancy Solomon. After 8 years, the slow wheels of justice now seem to be turning once again to properly investigate the Sheridan’s double murder. Beyond the NJ AG re-opening the original investigation, a 2nd investigation into why the original inquiry by Somerset County was so (obviously) suppressed & quashed is critical here…hopefully that is why the DoJ seems to be now involved. What a story but, gawd, what a mess and travesty. Thank you WNYC & Nancy Solomon!

What an amazing work of journalism. This is investigative reporting at its finest. I hope and pray this case will vindicate Mr Sheridan who, by so many accounts, was greatly admired and respected. My heart goes out to his sons and grandchildren and I pray justice will be done to his memory. Btw, I am not from NJ, but it was compelling.

Asks questions more than it answers them
Probably more interesting for those from Nj/south jersey than the wider public. Citizens of the state have come to acknowledge and accept corruption in politics — really its an open secret for most of us, and something that rarely gets addressed by formal media. This podcast really seems to ask the question of what kind of system can allow an alleged heinous murder like this happen to one of the ‘good guys’ in NJ politics. In that respect, I thought it was well-reported and presented, though the murder itself is really just the seed of the story.

Started strong, but …
… I’m calling it quits after E6. The story of the crime and the incompetence of the investigation were fascinating. But E5 & E6 we’re a deep dive into NJ political corruption without a clear linkage to the murders. Just boring. I’m out.

Seedy underbelly of NJ politics exposed
This is definitely a true crime whodunnit podcast. But it’s also a really good and thoughtful exploration of a corrupt political system by a very experienced reporter. Hopefully shining a light on this chicanery will help make things better. Thanks for doing this!

Dead End
Can’t wait to hear the next one. I binge listened to the series this weekend. Okay yeah late to the party but really glad I heard it. So so impressive amount of work , superb investigator. I for one loved her voice and don’t need Walter Cronkite to let me know what it up. I’m a bit scared for her and so proud that there are people who stand up. I remember hearing about this when I lived in NYC and thinking it was so obviously a hit but what else is new.

An interesting premise
The deaths of the Sheridans provided Solomon with a promising hook to explore corruption in New Jersey, but she does not persuade this listener that the failed investigation in those deaths was politically motivated. Garden variety police indifference, laziness, and incompetence appears to be at the heart of the matter.

Excellent
The frustrating lack of conclusion to this investigation perfectly illustrates the gridlock of NJ’s political corruption. (I must comment on one thing that annoyed me throughout, though: Nancy’s inflection at the end of her sentences sounds like she is inviting us to tea and deflects the seriousness of the content.)

The title tells the tale
Dead End is exactly that – – a path to nowhere. Although it is well presented and well reported, it offers up an unsolved case and goes nowhere towards solving it. It points no fingers and suggests no new suspects.Despite spending a lot of time talking about a Camden political boss and dropping the name of former Governor Chris Christie several times, one does not come away from Dead End knowing any more in the final episode than he or she knew in the first. New Jersey political junkies may find some enjoyment in hearing familiar names or learning some new ones, but beyond that it may not be worth a listen. I suggest the first season of Crimetown instead.

Goodbye Columbus
Compelling and gripping story line from a talented reporter that I hope we hear more from. I also have no idea how a former reviewer found this account to be “politically motivated“. I didn’t even feel that it was a story about politics – but rather a tale of corruption and heartbreaking injustice.

High five to Nancy Solomon for her excellent work. As a midwesterner I haven’t followed NJ politics (the politics of my home state is disturbing enough) but nevertheless I was drawn into this story and looked forward to each weekly release. corruption in NJ politics?!?! Shocking ! The thing I find so frustrating is these things are exposed and what happens to the perpetrators? Look Chris Christie may no longer be governor but he’s still out there yapping - and bet his still has power. Nothing ever changes.

As a lover of several true crime podcasts (and 20+ year resident of NJ) I had to check this one out…. and I am so glad I did. Another warmed-over Serial wannabe
The series moved along at a nice efficient clip for the first two episodes, with a large cast of colorful and interesting Jersey characters, then everything came to a screeching halt as all those characters disappeared and we were schooled (or re-schooled for those of us who listen to WNYC) about Camden politics for at least four episodes (and counting). Why didn’t you at least tell us how many shows comprised the season? I thought it would wrap in six, but now seven is promised (and who knows if that’s the end?), and it’s pretty clear that the series will dribble out in a socio-political contemplation of incompetence, corruption, and political arm-twisting in … New Jersey — can you believe it ??! Meantime, it becomes increasingly clear that the murders will remain unsolved. With tighter editing, this could have been a brisk, crisp three-parter.

This is in-depth reporting that matters. If we are to remain a democracy of any sort, government needs to be accountable to the people, and the behind-the-scenes workings of power need to be made transparent. Firstly, what a terrifying story - even though we all know this goes on it’s hard to wrap your head around the fact that justice escapes the victim(s) and powerful, dispicable individuals evade it. As a “true crime junkie” who has listened to countless podcasts over the years - some excellent, some so bad I couldn’t get through even one more second of them, I have to say that this podcast and the host’s reporting/storytelling is fantastic. Nancy’s cadence, her rhythm, along with her voice itself are super easy on the ears and make following and understanding the information and events seamless - exciting in fact. Sometimes it’s difficult to grasp the chronological order of things when listening to these type of podcasts - not with this host. You won’t be disappointed. As much as I can’t wait for the next episode I’ll be really bummed once the season is over.

My podcast “A Talk in the Attic” if you’re looking for a different vibe while you’re waiting for the next DEAD END to drop. You should all be very proud of what you’ve produced!

Fantastic but…
Fantastic but please - there’s no “L” in spatter. Even one of the detectives keeps saying splatter. Yikes!

Sad but clear
A sad and amazing crime, and very clearly reported. A very unthinkable set of circumstances that the sons of the murdered pair had to review of crooked people in New Jersey.

Enough!
Nancy is a top notch reporter. The production is high level as you would expect of WNYC. However of all the topical subjects that are relevant today why shoot for the lowest common denominator, true crime? I have always held in disdain those people who find entertainment in the misery and suffering of their fellow humans. Even more disdain for those who exploit the victims of these crimes for their own profit. Behind every one of these morbid podcasts are real people who went through horrific experiences, and you want to turn that misery into a revenue stream. Appalling.

The best murder mystery podcast since Serial
This story is amazing. You don’t need to be from Jersey to appreciate the politics, the power plays, and great tragedy of this horrible murder.

This is an excellent investigative report, the kind we need from our media, and so rarely get. And it’s a thriller to follow.

This is awesome!
I have little patience and can’t wait for the next episode. OMG NJ is bananas! This took place not far from where I grew up, I “know” these people. I know very little about the Norcross folks except, be careful. I’m looking forward to learning more. I’m loving this podcast, it’s unfolding so well.

- EPISODE 8: Dead EndIn February 2015, the Somerset prosecutor announced that John Sheridan had murdered his wife in cold blood and then killed himself. In 2017, the manner of death was updated to “undetermined.” From the local detectives to the state’s Attorney General’s office, a lot of people walked away from these murders. If a family as powerful and well-connected as the Sheridans gets such bad treatment, what does this say about the justice system in New Jersey? New voices interviewed in episode: • Ben Barlyn, lawyer who filed a whistleblower lawsuit against the Chris Christie administration. • Peter Sheridan, younger brother of John, and a federal judge in New Jersey.0 comments0
- EPISODE 7: Breaking News - "Thou Shalt Pursue"In the almost eight years since John and Joyce Sheridan were killed, five state Attorneys General have come and gone in New Jersey. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy recently nominated a new Attorney General, Matt Platkin. Last week, an email came from Platkin’s press office with surprising news.0 comments0
- Dead End: A New Jersey Political Murder Mystery May 24 · 32m EPISODE 6: On the (Camden) WaterfrontA couple months after his parents’ deaths, Mark Sheridan comes across a paper trail: extensive email exchanges, dated memos, and handwritten notes detailing a real estate deal on the Camden waterfront. His father, John Sheridan, wrote himself a note on an envelope: “I have a duty of loyalty and good faith and I need to act in a way consistent with that responsibility." How did John act and what impact did it have? New voice interviewed in episode: • Jeff Pillets, an investigative reporter who spent a year at the Bergen Record looking at George Norcross and his insurance business0 comments0
- EPISODE 5: New Jersey’s Other BossJohn Sheridan’s decision to go work at Cooper University Hospital came at a curious time. It was just months after news about the Palmyra tapes came out. The tapes caught George Norcross bullying and offering a favor to a small town official; they are a rare instance where evidence emerged of the rough and tumble side to the south Jersey political machine. An email shows Norcross' control over the state legislature and city council members in Camden explain what it means to be a "yes yes" person. • Kelly Francis, union organizer and Camden activist • Kevin Riordan, Philadelphia Inquirer reporter who has covered south Jersey off and on for the past 45 years • Micah Rasmussen, director of Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider University • Tom Knoche, lecturer at Rutgers University in Camden • Matt Katz, reporter at WNYC • Shaneka Boucher, Camden City Councilwoman • Marilyn Torres, Camden City Councilwoman • Jeffrey Brenner, doctor who worked and lived in Camden during its worst years0 comments0
- EPISODE 4: The Dirt on the Garden StateAfter it becomes clear the Somerset county prosecutor’s office couldn’t have done a worse job (unless their goal was to destroy the crime scene), some 200 prominent citizens send a letter to the state attorney general asking for his office to intervene in the investigation. Despite the letter signed by the biggest names in New Jersey legal circles—including two former attorneys general and three former governors—the attorney general never gets involved. The quest to find out why takes us through a brief history of problems in New Jersey's criminal justice system. New voice interviewed in episode: • Ed Stier, lawyer, joined the attorney general’s Office in New Jersey in the 1960s to investigate and prosecute organized crime0 comments0
- EPISODE 3: A Bloody Fingerprint, A Bent Fire Poker, and Mystery DNAThe knife used to kill John Sheridan is just the first of many clues casting doubt on law enforcement’s conclusion of murder suicide. A newspaper crime reporter, a veteran homicide detective out of Philly, and a whistleblower point to significant pieces of evidence that have been disregarded—even thrown into a dumpster. Although Mark has the state attorney general and the county prosecutor in his cell phone, he still gets stonewalled. The authorities assure the political insider that his parents had a dark secret, which will eventually come to light. Mark isn’t convinced. Instead, as he goes through his parent’s papers, he stumbles into a different fight. New voices interviewed in episode: • Barbara Boyer, reporter from the Philadelphia Inquirer • Eddie Rocks, veteran homicide detective, retired from the Philadelphia police. • Lawrence Kobilinski, professor emeritus, department of sciences at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York • Professor Keith Taylor, professor, Department of Law, Police Science and Criminal Justice Administration, John Jay College of Criminal Justice (and a former NYPD detective) A previous version of this episode referred to Mark Sheridan as the “personal lawyer for Chris Christie.” In fact, he was the personal lawyer for the Chris Christie campaign. We have updated the episode to correct this.0 comments0
- EPISODE 2: Not Your “Typical” Murder SuicideThe Sheridans’ eldest son Mark is consumed with getting to the bottom of what happened to his parents. As the lawyer for Governor Chris Christie’s election campaign, Mark is in a unique position to uncover answers. Instead, he’s met with roadblock after roadblock. The questions really pile up when he learns that detectives haven’t even interviewed several key witnesses or completed a thorough investigation of the crime scene. Not only that, a key piece of evidence is missing. New voices interviewed in episode: • Barry Jansen, retired forensic technician for the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office • Tom Draper, Sheridans’ neighbor • Michael Baden, medical examiner hired by the Sheridan brothers A previous version of this episode referred to Mark Sheridan as the “personal lawyer for Chris Christie.” In fact, he was the personal lawyer for the Chris Christie campaign. We have updated the episode to correct this.0 comments0
- EPISODE 1: Meet the SheridansOn a quiet cul-de-sac, a husband and wife of 47 years are stabbed to death in the stillness of dawn. Honest and unassuming, John Sheridan, famous for never raising his voice, played against type in the rough-and-tumble world of New Jersey politics. Could the Republican lobbyist have killed his wife Joyce—a veteran public school teacher and no-nonsense mother of four sons—then set their bedroom on fire before knifing himself? That’s the version of events authorities say happened in the early morning hours of September 28, 2014. But, in more ways than one, the theory doesn’t add up. Key voices interviewed in episode: • Christine Todd Whitman, former Governor • Chris Stevens, Joyce Sheridan’s best friend • Bob Stevens, husband of Chris’ Stevens • Mark Sheridan, eldest of the Sheridans’ four sons, lawyer for Governor Chris Christie's campaign and for the state Republican party for more than a decade • Peter Sheridan, John’s younger brother and federal judge in Trenton since 2005 • Mary Kay Roberts, hired by John Sheridan at Riker Danzig, a New Jersey law firm. Worked with him closely for a decade in the Trenton office • John Farmer, a former state Attorney General and friend of John Sheridan who runs a political research center at Rutgers University A previous version of this episode referred to Mark Sheridan as the “personal lawyer for Chris Christie.” In fact, he was the personal lawyer for the Chris Christie campaign. We have updated the episode to correct this.0 comments0
