Seriously underrated podcast
I’ve listened to many true crime podcasts, but this is only one I have consistently come back to time and time again. There is no unnecessary rambling that drags on for twenty minutes (which is often the case in other popular true crime podcasts). The host, instead, jumps into the story and lays out the facts while always remaining respectful to the victim and their families. This podcast is such a hidden gem, you won’t regret listening!

Good stuff
Great podcast, enjoyed about 20 episodes I’ve listened to so far. Not very interested in the Ashley Flowers interview - she’s known to have plagiarized verbatim from smaller podcasters.

Gave it a chance
In the first episode, the host points out that many other podcasts that cover Maine cases often pronounce the names of towns and people wrong. Because...Maine. And she assures the listeners that she is from Maine, so she will do better. Then she proceeds to pronounce the names of several of the important names wrong. Bummer. But...in her defense, she would have had to read all the info she got on this case. No one living in or from New Sweden would have spoken to her about this. Update: I don’t love it. The rythym of her storytelling is odd. She takes these big long pauses that are just a touch too long…I always look down at my phone to see if it’s still playing. It’s a podcast that I only listen to if I have listened to every other single podcast in my library. I was definitely hoping to love it. I just don’t.

Great podcast
I do not leave reviews but I felt it necessary after the announcement and updated episode. This is one of the best podcast for true crime as well as for missing persons in Maine. I am not a Mainer, but I love knowing that the missing that she refers to are getting coverage. These episodes are well planned and reported on. This is not for someone that wants all the salacious details of a crime, but just the important information. She tell it in a straight forward way without giving an opinion or pushing a conclusion. To me, it shows really cares about those involved without making the show about her.

Being a lifelong Mainer, I love to hear about all of these cases. Some I’ve heard of growing up and some not. I find the really old ones particularly interesting but I love them all. Keep up the good work!

Wonderfully organized!
I was born and raised on Islesboro, Maine, but now live in New Hampshire, and I just have to say that I love your work so much! Hearing about local cases that I had never heard of is incredibly heartbreaking. I hope to one day be able to help solve a case if anything sounds familiar. I recommend your show to everyone I know that listens to true crime, with the note that your show focuses on the victims and simply getting their names and stories out there to try to help. We need more true crime "fans" to focus on that. Thank you for all that you do!

Addition 5/13/2022- It’s ‘Lore’ for Maine! In my wildest dreams I could never have imagined that we would have our very own Aaron Manhke! Kylie Low, you are such a breath of fresh air! Thank you so much for this amazing podcast- you are a natural storyteller! (And I’m a little worried that Sarah Koenig or someone will grab you up soon!) When I started listening to podcasts, the very first one I heard was Lore! I binged every episode immediately. I listened to your first episode a while ago, and then winter in Maine came, and that’s when I switch to TV lol. Now spring is here, I’m outside again, and this is my season for podcasts! And I’m definitely binging this now until I run out of episodes! I really love this podcast. Seriously great. 100%RECOMMEND ❤️

Books
Murder On Ossipee Lake was almost another outstanding episode until you stopped short of telling us the result of the trial and told us to buy the book to find out how the story ended. Please don’t do that again or at least preface the episode with a notice that there will be no resolution and we will need to buy a book if we want the end of the story. I get that missing cases aren’t resolved either but that’s not intentional to drive book sales like this was.

I found this podcast actually by accident and I’m glad I did. I’m from Eastern Maine, lived here all my life, I’ve heard of these cases but then they go away and you don’t hear anything else regarding them, Kylie does an amazing job following up and telling the story. I hope she continues, I would love to hear the story of the unsolved case of Ayla Reynolds, some answers, I feel like we all know what happened but can’t be proved.

I like to listen to podcasts before bed. Dark DownEast has been the current podcast I’ve been binging and my boyfriend was up one night listening and immediately was hooked. Amazing! I’m SO picky.
Dark Downeast is amazing! Kylie speaks so clearly and tells each story with care and thoughtfulness. I am IMPOSSIBLY picky when it comes to podcasts and truly only listen to one other true crime podcaster. I’ve tried hundreds of others but always find something that irritates me… not here! I usually hate unsolved cases and don’t bother listening, but I don’t mind when they’re on this podcast at all because of the thoughtful and detailed storytelling that Kylie commits to for each and every case. I also love the charm she adds to each case by sharing things about where she grew up, while still getting right to the point. I’ve been telling everyone I know to start listening!

Well done
Very well done podcast, the host really focuses on the victims and telling their stories instead of focusing on the perpetrators which can happen too often in this genre. It is clear that not only does a lot of hard work go into each episode, but also much thought for the victims memory and respect for their loved ones who were left behind. A great listen for anyone interested in true crime!

A Midwestern Downeaster
I have grown up my entire life in the Midwest, first near Chicago and now in northern Wisconsin, but part of my heart, from visits and bit of fantasy, has long been in New England. While the events that you examine and share with your listeners are far from fantasy, the detail and heartfelt tellings in each bring me right to the shores of Ogunquit and the streets of Bangor. For this history teacher, I am thankful that the experiences of the victims and their families in their collective tragedies is never lost with time.

Simply The Best
This podcast is simply the best I have come across. I have always listened to true crime podcasts but there is just something so cool about listening to true crime from your area, especially when your home town is mentioned in an episode. I love listening to Dark Downeast while cleaning, doing homework, getting ready for work, sometimes even while im at work; if its a slow day, and getting ready for bed. My mom even loves the podcast, and she is usually on the fence about true crime. Thank you for doing what you do, and just know you will always have a long time supporter in Southern Maine <3

This podcast,
IS AMAZING!! I heard about this podcast a month ago and got hooked!! I didn’t think I was going to like listening to a true crime podcast because I am more of a visual person, but let me tell you; I binge listened to this podcast in about a month!! While I drove to work, before bed, while my kiddo was napping, when I was crocheting, anytime I could listen!! Kylie does an amazing job at bringing awareness to these individual stories and is a wonderful reporter. The only thing that I am sad about, is that I have to wait a whole week to listen to a new episode!! This podcast is a must!! ✅

One of the best podcasts out there!
I have listened to every episode of DD and Kylie has delivered with every single one! Being from Maine and also an invested true crime listener, this podcast has everything I love rolled into one. Not only is Kylie a great story teller, she is very respectful of the families (the best episodes are when family members are on the show) and not just telling the more well-known stories of white people. The best part of Mondays is when a new DD episode pops up on my phone!

Finally a good one!
It is so hard to find a true crime podcast where the episodes aren’t filled with chitchat and a lot of personal opinions. So needless to say, I’m so glad I found this one! Host has a great story telling voice and presents the cases with thoughtful writing and research. Only a few episodes in, but really enjoying it. As someone who was born and raised in a small town in Maine, I really love this podcast! The episodes are short but still include so much information and all you need to know about each case. Your podcasts are the most interesting of all the ones I have listened to. From the episode on Mattie Hacket ( that I grew up knowing about in my home town, Readfield) to cases that happened as I have continued to live here, are fascinating. Your research and vocal tone and presentation is spot on and pleasant to listen to. Keep up with the great work and the cause of solving and reminding the public of missing persons and unsolved crimes. Thanks ,John Tyler

Host is The Worst
So the host, who purports herself to be a “reporter” and at the very least an amateur “investigator” doesn’t actually go after any hard to get interviews and only reads and relays the low-hanging-fruit of each case. In the case of Jackie Bevins the host has the gall to say that she can’t reiterate the facts of the abuse Jackie Bevins suffered as it would be “triggering” but the listeners can go read the source material. I don’t think she understands that her job in this case is to inform the listener of the facts that are inherent to each case. She then shows just how woke she is by saying “we must believe women” as if women are some infallible creatures who never exaggerate or outright lie. Who has the stupidity to make such an asinine comment?

A coworker recommended this podcast to me as we are both lovers of true crime and Maine transplants. Kylie is an amazing storyteller and has such a great voice for podcasts. Incredibly well written and presented
I believe this is the first review I’ve ever written, despite listening to several true-crime podcasts every week. This one is remarkable, though. It’s well researched, and the host’s citation of sources is weaved into the narrative in a manner that does not interrupt the flow (a rarity, IMO). She does a fantastic job, and I’m incredibly glad that I stumbled upon this gem.

Top Notch Storytelling
I am from away, having moved to Maine about a dozen years ago but I also lived in Massachusetts for a few decades so I have soaked up plenty of New England flavor. I got hooked on true crime podcasts last year and I have listened to several different ones in that time. Dark Downeast stands tall among them. I can’t lie, it gets bonus points for covering local stories but it doesn’t need those points to earn a five star rating. Even if you are not local, the production value is excellent and the music is fantastic in both the tone and the sparse usage during the story. Kylie has a great voice for storytelling and it is clear that she takes her time and also edits judiciously to make sure her inflection is appropriate and her meaning is clear. Kylie does not overly lean on the gory details of the story for shock value, nor does she drag out the tale with pointless detail to try and hit a minute marker post. Everything is summed up in a reasonable amount of time. Even with the knowledge that evil people can be anywhere, I was shocked to hear some of the gruesome stories that took place in what is widely considered a sleepy little corner of the country. So far, the most shocking for me was the Sunday River Spree Killer. My wife is from Rumford and she is also a true crime fan and she did not really remember the details of that horrific event so she was shocked as well. This is a fantastic podcast that had me completely hooked and I am so glad that Kylie continues to make more and I am not even half way through the archive. And to answer a question you had in an earlier episode, Kylie, I too, listened to a podcast in the shower. Dark Downeast of course! 🦞🌲

Has become my favorite!
Kylie, Thank you for bringing light to so many Dark Downeast stories! I only recently found this podcast after running out of episodes on so many others and is by far my favorite! What I love about Dark Downeast, besides the fact these stories are focused on Maine and other New England communities, is how thoughtful and detailed you are when sharing each story. I remember many of these cases being in the news over the years and how they often had no ending. Another family left to wonder, if they would get answers, as a new cases took the focus off the case of their lost family members. To revisit each story as you bring light to them in a compassionate and caring way, helping people remember those who are so often forgotten, except by the family searching for answers, is such a gift. You are truly keeping them from being lost with time. Dark Downeast is a 5 star podcast for sure! 🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊

Thank you Kylie Low
As someone who grew up in NH, went to college in VT, lived and still work in MA, and worked and now live in Maine, this podcast gets me every episode! Kylie Low does an amazing job of retelling these true crime and missing persons stories! Her voice is so soothing and listening to real family members and loved ones share their stories…. There’s no explaining how much it digs at your heart. Kylie tells each story so well and with research and permission and compassion. As an empath I’ve always felt for everyone involved in true crime. I disliked missing persons because of how hard that must be for those left behind and I always wanted people to have answers. While that still rings true, I don’t run from listening to them anymore because the unknown hurts too much. Kylie Low has made these stories into Something I must hear every week. I won’t let their stories get lost with time either Kylie

Investigative Journalism at its finest
Kylie is an incredible story teller. You can tell she does her research, and does it well. Kylie tries to be intentional with her presentation of these stories by her descriptive yet careful word choice. She paves a path that has you on the edge of your seat until the reveal of what happened, all while being respectful to those lost. While true crime podcasts can be a slippery slope of “gaining fame” off of those lost, her intentions are evident - she wants to share and remember those lost as well as educate those who listen about true crime and ways to protect ourselves if faced with these circumstances. Overall, this is well presented and despite the topic, still makes me want to come see the beautiful state of Maine. Great work.

Came for the “Maine” stayed for the outstanding podcast
I’ve spent lots of time in New England but visiting Maine remains on my bucket list. I began listening to this podcast with no expectations beyond soaking up some Maine history and culture. Not only were these expectations met but as a true crime podcast, they were blown away! Don’t underestimate Kylie’s qualifications when you hear her gentle voice, she is a top-notch researcher and storyteller. The victim’s family member content is so well selected and always compassionately presented. Kim Moreau’s dad made me cry in my car until I could walk into work. Love to play Kylie’s can’t-believe-it-but-it’s-true, Maine whodunits, in the morning, while dressing. I’m so glad I found her. Fascinating stories of a perfect length, and the time flies! Besides her wonderfully interesting choices of cases to share, the perfect set-the-stage background music — including the comfortably familiar clang of a shore bell and sloshing shore water — her careful pacing, careful diction, gifted resonant voice and easy delivery, all work enticingly, well to deliver Kylie as a first class storyteller… Thank you, Kylie!

I LOVE Dark Downeast!
My mom saw a story about Dark Downeast on the news and she started listening to it, and told me about it. I’m a Forensic Psychology major at Thomas College in Waterville, and I LOVE to hear the stories behind crime. One that touched me the most was the case of Ayla Reynolds. I live in Waterville, about a mile from where she went missing, and I have house sat for the people that live across the street from that house. Though it likely never will, I would love to see that case get solved, for the sake of Ayla’s family and others that were close with the family. I started listening from the beginning and I’m almost caught up to the newest ones. Thank you for creating this podcast!

I love your podcast so much! I’ve been listening since the beginning and I was really psyched to hear on 92.3 that you were starting a true crime podcast, so I immediately started following. The way you tell these stories, your calming voice, your respect for the victims, and your knowledge and credibility just make this podcast so easy to listen to. I am not much for the podcasts where people just sit and chat, so I really appreciate your ability to tell a story. And I’m loving the new episodes where we get to here victims family’s talk.

Hello Kylie, First off thank you for bringing awareness to Missing persons cases. In a private pole I have been running for my own curiosity I find 75-80% of people I talk to would prefer a solved case over a missing persons, why I have no idea because they are the ones you maybe be able to help out with! Honestly, people just need to feel safe and they feel much safer when the bad guy is in jail, just my 2cents from the other 25% Your storytelling and compassion is contagious, quickly one of my go to faves but I'm running out quick. Don't give it up, your a Podstar!!🦞🦞

I’ve been a listener since day one and honestly I’m shocked I haven’t written a full review! I look forward to every episode and I love the way Kylie tells each story, while respecting the people involved and bringing light to older cases. Great pod about New England
I’m a new Englander (hail from Massachusetts!) and as someone who has spent a lot of time throughout this region it’s wicked nice to have someone familiar with the area. This pod is a great addition to the true crime pod world! Especially nice is that it’s not just first stage colonialism history lol! A lot of pods will cover cases here (and they’re fine) but Kylie is right, hearing it from a local is better... no stammering over town or tribe names! Her cantor is very professional and smooth! Great to listen to! 🦞🦀 love it!

Very well done!
So very respectful to the families, I like that it’s about remembering these people who’s lives were taken too soon - not about the criminals. The story that I think surprised me the most was so shocking because I grew up going to Belfast to visit family, so hearing about the wife who went missing back in the 80’s shocked me and the fact that the husband was never tried. So many sad stories, but interesting and again very readily done!

Always a 5 star podcast
The care and research that goes into each podcast make it one of the best out there. Always delivered in a respectful way that not only makes for a fantastic podcast but is also filled with amazing detail about each case . Captivating and Compassionate
Kylie Low presents each case on Dark Downeast with care, and centers the people and families who are victims of these crimes. The amount of research and dedication Kylie puts into each case is incredible. As a listener, it is easy to tell how passionate Kylie is about both the state of Maine and getting justice for the people whose stories she tells. I travel back and forth between Aroostook county and Penobscot county and this podcast keeps me company. Really good
I’m not sure if it’s the way Kylie reads the stories or just because they are crimes committed in my state that make them seem even sadder, more emotional, than crimes I’ve listened to on other podcasts. Kylie does a great job presenting the facts while adding some of her thoughts or other information that helps inform the listener. I also love the Downeast trivia at the end of each episode!

Kylie has a way of telling these stories that keeps you captivated while showing respect and dignity to the victims and their families. Being from Franklin County, many of these stories I’ve heard of and one in particular hits home. I knew, went to high school with and was friends with Christian Nielsen and some of his siblings. It’s hard to express exactly how one feels knowing that you were in the presence of someone who could do something so horrific. My heart goes out to his family; they are some of the kindest people I’ve known and I often think about how difficult this has been on all of them. The fact that Kylie is a Mainer makes this podcast that much more appealing to a fellow Mainer. Thank you for doing this!!

I grew up in New England, enjoying the mountains, the ocean the small towns and especially the lore. “The One”
This is the one I’ve been waiting for! Kylie is an exceptional podcast host. Her stories are well researched and she does an outstanding job conveying the information necessary to tell the story, but honors and respects the victims and their families by leaving out details that no one really needs to know. Her voice and pacing make her a joy to listen to! And she leaves out unnecessary fluff and commentary that could detract from the story. I’m excited to see where this podcast goes! Awesome Maine love podcast
As a Mainer, I love being able to listen to true crime cases from my own state! Kylie does an excellent job telling stories and weaving in little details about Maine as she tells them.

Great new true crime podcast, no-nonsense!
Finally, a podcast that doesn’t start with 5 minutes of “shout-outs” to individual reviewers followed by a 2-minute trailer for some new spin-off podcast, followed by two commercials for Best Fiends and Best Help and then a bunch of studio babble. Great stories, great storyteller. Wish they were a tad longer!

True Crime Fans, you must listen to this podcast!
I cannot wait for Monday’s when a new episode is available! This podcast is so well executed. I could listen to Kylie’s voice all day. The cases are well researched and well narrated. So far, Kylie has presented a wide range of cases. While I am not from Maine or New England (in fact, I’m on the complete opposite side of the country in Southern CA), I love hearing about all the local culture and landmarks she weaves into the episode. She definitely does so in a way that includes those of us not from the area.

A Mystery Filled Escape
I love a good novel or thriller but often don't have time for a 6-10 hour Audible "read". Which makes Kylie's Dark Downeast a perfect escape. From can't believe it moments to that can't be real post-show google's, this podcast is a must listen for anyone who loves good storytelling and show production. 10 out of 10 would recommend. 🦀 🌲 🦀 🌲

Love Maine, Love True Crime, Love Kylie!
Not only is someone finally covering True Crime in New England, but it’s being done in the best way by Kylie! I obviously followed her through her Q 97.9 journey and via social media, so I’m glad she’s come into the true crime podcast world!! So interesting to hear local and greater New England stories! Crazy stuff happens here too! Great job on the podcast!! 🦞🌲🦞🌲🦞🌲🦞🌲🦞🌲

Amazing!!
I have lived in Maine my entire life and I love this podcast!! I grew up in Northern Maine🌲and have since moved to Portland. I love true crime and listen to multiple different podcasts and always found myself thinking “that kind of stuff doesn’t happen here.” Thanks to Kylie, I now know that’s not true. I spent a lot of time listening to Kylie on The Q Morning Show when I used to commute for work in college and she was always a welcomed voice during my rides. Dark Downeast feels like listening to an old friend tell you about true crime stories in your area. Kylie living in Maine makes this podcast so much better because you get the locals perspective and she knows what it’s like to live here. The one comment about Forest Ave being awful struck a chord with me. I dread driving anywhere on Forest Ave because traffic is insane and the intersections look like they were designed by a toddler. It’s small moments like that, that has made Dark Downeast my new favorite podcast!! Thank you for all your hard work Kylie and putting out such a great show!! I definitely recommend it to every person I know 😂

Far above the rest.
As a life long Mainer I have always been a bit of a snob when it comes to my state gathering national attention. When someone from away talks about Maine they usually portray Mainers as just simple hicks from the North and the stories are just filled with the same old clichés. THAT IS NOT THE CASE WITH DARK DOWNEAST. It is immediately clear Kylie’s local perspective on everything. The time and effort she puts in is so evident in everything from the information and research in each episode, all the way to the overall production value of the podcast. I have always been into Maine history but I still find myself learning something new in every episode. Thank you for doing this podcast! It truly feels like it’s from Mainers for Mainers.

GIRL this is amazing. No chatter, no drinking wine and laughing. Telling cases that other people stay away from. The detail, the intro and your voice is super relaxing. This is SO good. Obvs a bit biased as a Mainer but it’s great for any lover of True Crime. She gets right into the stories, her writing style flows, her speaking voice is lovely, and she adds in the correct amount of extra information without it taking away from the story. (Like when she actually went through the differences between manslaughter and murder THANK YOU.) New favorite podcast.

keeping Maine spo0oOOoky
I have a quote from Karen Kilgareff above my bed that reads “I’m an emotional lighthouse on the very top of Maine.” I’m a true crime/podcast fan born and raised in Maine. I left for a bunch of years, and have come back. I’ve never really known about true crime cases here. It was Stephen King and Murder She Wrote keeping my home state spooky. When it came to true crime, the focus was usually 1970s West Coast. Or Wisconsin. So here I have found a podcast that will give me a little true crime education about my home. I am so impressed by the quality of this podcast - from the clear and crisp sound, to the foggy bell introduction, to the storytelling and research.

- The Case of Charlotte A. DunnMAINE, 1971: The quiet of a dark late spring evening in Bangor, Maine was interrupted by frightened screams inside an Otis Street Apartment building. Though several residents would later report hearing the sounds of a woman in distress, no one called for help, no one picked up the phone to dial the police, and no one checked in on their downstairs neighbor, 84-year old Charlotte Dunn, until the next morning when help would be a lost cause. Police had a prime suspect for Charlotte Dunn’s murder from the very first day of the investigation, but they’d need to pull some crafty police work to secure the hard evidence against him. Crafty, or maybe questionable police work, depending on who you asked at the time. A rampant rumor mill, contentious evidence, and a slippery suspect made for a complicated investigation as Bangor Police worked jointly with the Maine State Police Homicide division on a case for the very first time. Charlotte Dunn would see justice, but not without a fight. - Sylvia Baker (3 of Spades, Connecticut) from The DeckSylvia Baker, 28, went downstairs on July 17th, 1982 to take out the trash. Sylvia never returned to her apartment, where her two young kids were watching TV. When she was found the next day, nude and bound with pieces of her own clothing, her family remained in a state of shock as police worked to track down her killers. Over 40 years later, no one’s been held accountable for Sylvia’s murder, but a DNA match and other clues have investigators closer than ever to the truth. - Dark Downeast May 15 · 29m What Really Happened to Bryan Nisenfeld? On February 6, 1997, 18-year old Bryan Nisenfeld sat in his afternoon literature class at Roger Williams University in Providence, Rhode Island. Bryan was acting differently during class that day, almost despondent. Where he went after class, what the final moments of his life entailed, is still a mystery. He was simply never seen or heard from again. He never returned to the campus or even to his dorm room. His bank account showed no activity. He didn’t call home. Roger Williams University did not notify Bryan’s family of their son’s disappearance for almost a week. Months later, as summer was coming to an end, a family walking along the shore of Hog Island came upon a lone hiking boot. Inside was a wool sock and a severed foot. 2- DNA tests eventually confirmed the remains to be those of Bryan Nisenfeld. What really happened to Bryan Nisenfeld? Whether an accident, a self-made choice, or foul play, Bryan’s parents hold steadfast to their belief that more could have been done if only Bryan’s disappearance had been reported to police, or to them, and acted upon much sooner. At the very least, maybe they would have some answers. If you have information that could help bring a conclusion to Bryan Nisenfeld’s case, please call 877-RI-SOLVE. - The Roy Weber Story: The Invisible World of Male Sex WorkRHODE ISLAND, 2003: On Christmas morning in 2003, a security guard on the Johnson & Wales Harborside campus in Providence, Rhode Island discovered the body of a young man leaning up against a chain link fence. Fingerprints would later identify the man as 22-year old Roy Weber. Roy was part of a population of men who engaged in street-based sex work in Providence, many of them exchanging sexual acts for money to support their substance use. Almost 20 years later, Roy’s homicide is still unsolved. Police have photos of a man they’ve said could have information about what happened to Roy, and yet no arrests have been made to this day. Richard Holcomb knew Roy Weber, their lives intertwined by their mutual lifestyle at the time. He’s now in recovery, and Rich has spent much of his adult life advocating and raising awareness for street-based sex work and helping researchers, health care professionals, and the general public better understand the realities of that life, one that he fell into at a young age. This is the case of Roy Weber, but it’s also the story of Richard Holcomb and how he sought recovery and helped reclaim Roy Weber’s legacy by helping other men like him. - The Suspicious Deaths of Janet and Stephen DowNEW HAMPSHIRE, 1982: On December 10, 1982, a car sat in a ditch engulfed in a furious blaze. Janet Dow and her son, Stephen Dow, were inside that vehicle that appeared to have skidded off the road just 500 feet from their own home. They were deceased, but the cause of their deaths – whether from the seemingly gentle car crash, the wild flames, or something else – was not clear. What was clear to the first witnesses on the scene was that there must be more to what they were seeing. Over the next forty years and across multiple investigations, the truth of the suspicious deaths of Janet and Stephen Dow was hotly debated. Was it truly an accident or was the fire hiding evidence of a double homicide? - The Case of George JodoinNEW HAMPSHIRE, 2001: On December 27, 2001, a friend arrived at 50-year old George Jodoin’s farmhouse in Auburn, New Hampshire, expecting to get a tutorial on caring for his animals ahead of George’s trip to Thailand. Instead, he found George dead in his bedroom. In the early days of the investigation, the list of suspects could never be narrowed down to just one person. Investigators were frustrated, and the residents of Auburn, a small town just east of Manchester, feared there could be a killer on the loose. Despite a sizable reward offered by the Jodoin family and efforts by investigators, a year passed with dwindling leads, no arrests, and a lack of evidence. Eventually, the case went cold. But in 2009, New Hampshire’s first-ever Cold Case Unit was established. Within two years, the Cold Case Unit had taken on over a hundred cases of unsolved murders and missing persons in New Hampshire. George’s brother, Robert Jodoin, made sure George's murder case was a priority to investigators. Fourteen years after George Jodoin was found dead in his home, New Hampshire’s Cold Case Unit landed their first conviction. A dedicated and standout student of anthropology, Jane wouldn’t have missed a test unnecessarily. Jane was later discovered by her boyfriend and neighbors dead in her bed, the victim of a violent attack. Details of the investigation leaked to the media spiraled into sensational headlines of rumored ancient burial rituals with suspicion cast on Jane’s own anthropology classmates, while other clues at the crime scene led some officials to theorize that the attack was random and opportunistic. - Dark Downeast Apr 4 · 18m Introducing The Fall Line: “Sherry or Cheryl” Jane DoeIn March of 1976, a young woman was discovered, with no obvious trauma, in the Harpeth River in Nashville; she carried on her a picture of a little boy, and a trail that led to witnesses who said she’d hitchhiked with a mysterious friend, all the way from Minnesota—but that trail led nowhere. Without the possibility of DNA testing, the best shot of identifying “Sherry” Jane Doe is using her extremely accurate forensic art, and the details she shared of her life—and, perhaps, a daughter that ties her to South Carolina. - The Unsolved Homicide of Margaret PizioMASSACHUSETTS, 1979: It was August 20, 1979 and 35-year old Margaret Pizio was clocking into her overnight shift at the Susse Chalet Motor Inn in Seekonk, Massachusetts. Margaret should have returned home the next morning, but as it got later and later with no sign of her, the growing unease in the house was palpable. And then the phone rang. A reporter wanted to speak with someone about Margaret Pizio's murder. Beth Pizio was just a few days shy of her 9th birthday when her mother was killed. Over four decades later, Margaret’s murder remains unsolved. - MISSING: Reina Morales RojasMASSACHUSETTS, 2022: On November 26, 2022, 41-year old Reina Morales Rojas got into a car in East Boston, MA and some time later was dropped off in nearby Somerville. That’s the last time anyone had seen or heard from the mother of two. Though she was reported missing soon after, the public didn’t hear anything about Reina’s disappearance for almost two months, and if advocates like Lucy Pineda of Latinos Unidos en Massachusetts hadn’t stepped in to help bring attention to her case, Reina’s family wonders if her story would’ve ever made the news. Now four months later, Reina still isn’t home and information is scarce. Her children and sister in El Salvador who once spoke to her every single day await any sign that she is okay, all while fighting for attention on her case that took far too long to receive. - 50 Years Unsolved: Diane Companga and Anne PsaradelisNEW HAMPSHIRE, 1973: On July 11, 1973, 15-year old Diane Compagna swung her beach bag over her shoulder and headed out the door of her house in Merrimack, New Hampshire. She was off to a nearby lake to swim with her friend, 15-year old Anne Psaradelis. At least, that was the story they told their parents. Neither girl was expected home that night, but their parents weren’t suspicious as the girls left for the day. It wasn’t until the next afternoon when the pair didn’t return to either home that their parents began to worry. What began as a missing persons investigation for two teenage girls in the summer of 1973 ended in a double-homicide. In 2023, this case will reach its 50 year anniversary without answers. - The Unsolved Homicide of Bessie SelekMAINE, 1999: On the night of April 20, 1999, 41-year old Bessie Selek was walking along Route 202 near the Waterboro-Lyman, Maine town line when she was hit and killed by a passing vehicle. The driver fled the scene, leaving Bessie there to die on the side of the road not far from her own home. Detectives zeroed in on her boyfriend, Raymond Wood. They’d had a tumultuous relationship. A long history of domestic violence and abuse. Maine State Police were certain that Raymond was their guy. During an intense interrogation by two State detectives, Raymond Wood even confessed to the crime. But as the investigation continued, it appeared the evidence wouldn’t so easily fit the foregone conclusion reached by police, and the confession by their primary suspect wasn’t exactly proof that he did it. If you haven’t yet, listen to part 1 of Ronald Rodgers story on Dark Downeast. - Murder in Killington: The Case of Ronald Rodgers, Part 1VERMONT, 1971: It was 10:30 p.m. the night before the 4th of July in 1971 when a family returning to their cottage near Killington Ski Resort in Vermont discovered a fire down over an embankment. When the father and son got close enough to douse the fire with water they made a grim discovery. It was the badly burned body of a man. A family member would identify the man as 34-year old Veteran Ronald Rodgers, but as the case developed over the course of an entire decade, that basic fact would be challenged. This case begins two years before his body was discovered, with an armed robbery in Rutland, Vermont. This is a story of possible mistaken identity, of investigative missteps, and maybe, the story of a so-called perfect crime.
