Close Reads is a book-club podcast for the incurable reader. Hosted by David Kern and featuring Tim McIntosh and Heidi White, alongside a couple of other occasional guests, we read Great Books and talk about them. This is a show for amateurs in the best sense. We’re book lovers, book enthusiasts. This is not an experts show and it’s barely literary analysis in the way that literary analysis is commonly understood. Instead it’s a show about experiences with literary urge. Join us!
The discussion of this book is riveting. I am an avid reader but have never done a deep dive into Faulkner. Thank you for opening the door for me. I am learning a lot from all three of you and marvel at your analysis and perceptions. Clare on September 06, 2022

Really disappointed
No one leading this podcast has any real insight into these books- mostly opinions with no credentials to back up their “expertise”. A quick dive into their doctorates revels a subpar online institute that hands out degrees like candy. Definitely other podcasts out there to check out.

Meh…
Lots of reviews say the show is unpretentious but I actually found it to be the opposite. I think the discussions are one sided and unwilling to look at how books can be reinterpreted in our modern age. Even though I’m middle aged, the implied eye rolling at “kids these days” really bothered me. Younger generations actually can offer fresh and enlightened perceptions and should not be overlooked. I listened through episodes for a few of books I love and probably won’t return to listen to more.

Quality Commentary.
This is a wonderful podcast. I appreciate having good classical Christian commentary on some of my favorite books. Unlike the Bookening podcast, the people on Close Reads are willing to let the text judge them rather than spending all their time judging the text. It would be great if next year they did C. S. Lewis’ Till We Have Faces, but otherwise I have no complaints. Thank you Close Reads!

Absolutely love
I absolutely love this podcast! Even though I graduated college and graduate school studying English literature, I’ve learned way more listening to them. I always find myself “jumping” in the conversations at different paces! I even got my mom listening to them so we could discuss the episodes further! Please don’t stop them! I love Heidi’s opinions and her insights. David asks great questions, love the banter and rabbit trails, and I also really appreciate Tim and his comments!

Exceptional
I want to shout out to Heidi, Tim, and David. I think they are all exceptionally well-rounded and thoughtful readers. I particularly enjoy Heidi’s insight from a psychological background. Of course, I LOVE when Karen Swallow Prior joins! This podcast introduced me to her and I now have every book she’s written and the new editions of classics that she’s annotated. I find it difficult to participate in book clubs in real life, but I absolutely love listening to Close Reads. The pressure to participate is off and you just get to soak in intelligent banter. Love it!

Can I Give More Than 5 Stars?
I have grown more as a reader from listening to the Close Reads podcast than from all my classes in college and graduate school. The honest responses to the books that are covered in this podcast speaks to the character of the hosts as teachers, readers, and life-long learners. I have met them in person and spent time in serious conversation with them as well, and when I say that this is nothing feigned, I mean it. Time spent listening to this podcast will not be time wasted. If you are an incurable reader, you need this.

A great resource for readers
I've been an avid (at some points, obsessive) reader my whole life but I only just got around to searching out literary podcasts in the last couple years. I am so thankful for Close Reads! Though some may not appreciate the chit-chat, I like that the atmosphere is informal and relaxed, not totally structured and planned like a class or lecture. I like that David, Tim, and Heidi have different backgrounds, areas of expertise, and perspectives, which make for a more well-rounded discussion. I don't read everything they do, and I don't always approve of every book they select, but I NEVER come away from a podcast without learning something, often A LOT. I think it is so helpful to have their insights and commentary alongside my reading and I am happily re-reading things I've read multiple times before in order to benefit from their discussions.

New version is a giant fail
I loved this podcast when Angelina was on it. The new version is a giant fail. Heidi is pretentious but contributes absolutely nothing, and you can tell David doesn’t even bother to read the books. Switched over to Angelina’s The Literary Life podcast that she cohosts with Cindy Rollins. They’re everything that these podcasters aren’t — knowledgeable and humble for starters.

Used to love, now more disappointed
CiRCE institute is a mixed bag... I used to love this podcast but have slowly been disenchanted with hosts. Still love Tim. Really enjoy SJ Bentley. The others have no particular qualifications to be leading discussion and often just talk about their feelings in circles. I wish they would have chosen to stick with classics rather than living or modern authors.
Edited to add** I believe in response to this review, they claimed to be “just amateurs” in the true sense of the word (amore, to love). This is inconsistent because they ask for you to finance their “amateur pursuits” by paying into their patreon. It’s one or the other, not both. As soon as you ask for money you’re not amateurs, you’re professionals. I get patreons are typical. But then don’t claim to be amateurs. And BUYER BEWARE : are there actual qualifications from those asking for your money?

Literature wizards!
This is the best podcast to happen to my homeschool, my own education, and my bookshelves. The hosts feel like friends, and they somehow have this magical quality of making every book interesting and meaningful. I have never not liked a book they’ve done- or rather, I’ve always learned something, even if that’s an appreciation for the author or a specific genre. I recommend Close Reads to anyone and everyone who shows even the slightest interest in discussing books!

Prideful
Since Heidi has joined this group I can’t even stomach listening anymore. She has just shined a light on the pride of the other hosts. Heidi uses the same three phrases that seem to make her sound more intelligent. This is merely a small group, standing over art, giving personal criticism and anyone who disagrees is clearly beneath them. After years of listening and once a member of Jocose, I have unsubscribed from all things Circe. A collaboration clearly heading in a bad direction.

Eh, there are much better options!
I loved this podcast back in its beginning, when it was mostly Angelina and Tim. The discussion was balanced, and there was variation in opinion that made it interesting. I haven’t been able to bring myself to listen for the past year, partly for lack of time, but also the couple times I tried to listen I just felt annoyed. Can’t really put a finger on what it was exactly, but something is off. The old episodes are great! And worth going to give a listen to. Angelina now hosts a podcast with Cindy Rollins, and her (A’s) Classicist husband, Thomas Banks, and it is exceptional, if you’re looking for excellence!

Filling in the cracks
I love this podcast! I have been listening to it slowly for about two years, as I am an avid reader.
After listening this long, I feel like I know the hosts. They are all very knowledgeable, have fun with the text but also get to the heart of the books in a way I have never experienced before. I was telling my husband the other day that I’m so thankful for this Podcast to fill in the cracks of my education. I didn’t have any fun Literature classes past high school, even with a Graduate degree in Art Therapy, so I’m soaking up all the wisdom from this group of wonderful hosts. I know we could sit down to a meal and have a blast talking books! The Odyssey and Anne of Green Gables rocked my world, as well as others, & furthermore you changed my opinion about The Great Gatsby and opened my eyes to what a beautiful story it is. As of yet I haven’t listened to The Catcher and the Rye and I’m really hoping you can change my mind about that one; it will be a tough sell. 😉Thank you all, for what you have done and continue to do! 💕📚💕

Making good books even better
I just discovered this podcast a few weeks ago. I've never read Flannery O'Connor before, and probably wouldn't have enjoyed her if I hadn't been listening to the discussion sessions. I've also gone back into the archive to listen to the sessions on some old favorites. I love the perspective and insight of the hosts!
Update: I began writing the above review quite some time ago, and for some reason I never finished and submitted it!
I am so thankful for Close Reads and the whole Close Reads Podcast Network. These shows have enriched and stretched my reading life so much. Here’s to many more years!
2020 Update: This show, and the culture around it continues to be one of the biggest blessings in my life. We continue to read excellent selections and grow together as readers and thinkers. There are always some titles on the list that I love, some that I’m interested in, some that I’ve never heard of, and some that I do not want to read. But I read them all, because I have learned so much in this group. Every book has been a great experience, even if I haven’t come away adding every one to my “favorites” list. David, Heidi, and Tim each bring unique insights to the reading process, and then the group-discussion allows all the listeners to interact with the text, the hosts, and each other. Stories matter, and stories will save the world.

Smarter and Dumber
Somehow while listening to the Close Reads crew, I always finish feeling much more intelligent, informed, and enriched while at the same time terribly humbled in what I have yet to discover in works of literature. It is, I think, the perfect combination! They give me confidence in my reading, but not too much that I become cocky. Occasionally funny, always insightful. And always, always showing a love for story. Huge variety of books but always handled with the same attention and care. Highly recommend, dear readers!

Changed my world forever.
I’ve been listening to this podcast faithfully for years now, but somehow have overlooked writing a review. This podcast has opened my eyes to the beautiful world of literature. A world I previously thought was only for a privileged few. It’s introduced me to beautiful works of art, such as Hannah Coulter, Howard’s End, and Brideshead Revisited. It’s made me appreciate books that were not comfortable reads for me like Crossing to Safety. Most importantly, this podcast has changed the way I read and helped me deepen my appreciation for the written word in in a way that no English class could have ever accomplished. Being lead through these great works of literature by such knowledgeable host has helped change my understanding of the world around me.

I enjoy Close Reads because it keeps me reading great books I may not have picked up otherwise, because the people on the show have great insight and actually talk about books from a literary analysis standpoint, and they’re good natured and seem to genuinely enjoy one another and don’t take themselves too seriously. Great for thinkers
I have followed this podcast since the beginning and read the books along with the podcast. I so love the discussions between English teachers where they disagree with one another. I got so burned out on literature in high school and college and my opinion of a reading rarely matched my professor's - this podcast and the disagreement between the educated panelists has made me love literature again by restoring my confidence in forming my own opinions. Thanks to David Kern and Circe for a great podcast!

Great content, but laughter is a distraction
I love the content and how it is so in depth. I learn a lot and enjoy the easy-going nature of the hosts...but I will say that the laughter can be distracting. The way it transfers over into the podcast creates a high pitched noise that distracts me. It hurts to listen to...it definitely not saying they shouldn’t laugh, but perhaps should consider getting better microphones so the laughter isn’t louder than the regular speaking voices.

A gift
Although I don’t have to write papers for each novel as I listen, I feel like I’m learning more about the novels than I did back when I took Studied them in college or even when I taught them in public high school. The insight is incredible. Also as you listen you get a better idea of what it means that a classical education is about seeking the true the good and the beautiful. I would add one important caveat: it requires having ears that want to hear and seeking in order to find the awesomeness with in this podcast.

The book club that stretches your reading deeper

Mixed Feelings
I first listened to the Gilead episodes and found them enjoyable, despite occasional disagreements with the podcasters' interpretations. However, I found the ruminations on justice in the Murder on the Orient Express episodes troubling at times, particularly in not grappling enough with the limits and dangers of personally-administered justice.
On a technical note, there is an opportunity to balance volumes better - especially in the last 2 or three Orient episodes, i found myself repeatedly adjusting my volume dial up and down to comfortably listen to the softer (Tim) and louder (Angelina) voices.

I really enjoy this podcast. It’s fun to listen to people who enjoy each other and books.
I would love to see more information in each show’s notes. For example, resource books mentioned in Twelfth Night episode because listeners may not be listening in a situation where we can write down the recommendations at the time we are listening.

Great content, needs editing.
The content on this podcast is fantastic. I could do with a lot less of the chasing rabbits and the hosts' laughter. They get off topic extremely easily, and laughter isn't content. It gets distracting and grating, especially the pitch and volume of a laughter fit.

I am learning to digest and process books to ponder and reflect on. The length of the podcasts can go a little long, but I always enjoy the conversation - it's fun! There is always the speed-up option, too when time is limited. I can usually still process the convo at about 1.5 speed.

Perfection
Close Reads is my favorite podcast - a lit lovers dream. The depth of insight opens the books more fully to me and helps me consider and explore ideas I may not have seen on my own. While thought provoking and rich, it is never overly heady or elitist. There is a humility and easiness about this show. And it is fun - so fun. David, Angelina, and Tim have a great rapport, and after listening for a couple years, they feel like friends with whom I can grab a coffee and talk books.

Homeschooling Grandma
I have listened to every single episode of Close Reads and absolutely enjoy each and every one. As soon as the next book is announced on the podcast I order it so I can read along. WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE - keep the shows coming!

Transforming the Way I Read
Since I started listening to this podcast, I am falling in love with books in a new way. My whole mindset when I read has changed. I rarely read without a pen or highlighter in hand, and I linger on words or phrases, letting it sink in. I may not even complete my reading challenge on Goodreads but I don't care. I want to let books work on me, to be a more humble reader- and this podcast has played a large part in this change of heart. Thank you for inspiring me and making me laugh too as I listen to you chat about great books. Looking forward to many years and many books together. :)

A Superb Literary Podcast!
Close Reads introduced me to Flannery O'Conner and I am so thankful. I became that person who asked nearly all my friends and acquitances - "Hey, have you read Flanner O'Conner?" I have been a regular podcast listener ever since and enjoy the literary discussions, the analysis, how each host draws from their own perspective and life experience and how they relate to the characters and themes and a ton of other take aways that enrich my reading life!

Love this podcast
I love listening to this podcast. The hosts are very knowledgeable but very down to earth. They don't claim to know it all but instead have a great conversation about small chunks of each book they are reading. They have made me re-read some books and also read some books I may never have picked up on my own.

My wife and I race to listen to each episode!
This is a wonderful podcast that really enriches the discussions I have with my wife about these books. It's a handy way to be in a "book club" with her, since we don't really have time for any more meetings in our family's busy schedule!

Growing my mind and soul
Favorite books discussed by deep-thinking (and hilarious) hosts. I enjoy their insights, and I find that I am reading more closely my own never-ending stack too. (I may even be able to hear their voices in my head as I read, but I'll never tell.)

In my top three
I love the Close Reads podcast! I've been a voracious reader all my life, but I feel like I'm just now learning to understand literature on a deeper level, in great part due to David, Angelina, and Tim. Each episode is a joy as the trio winsomely invites the listeners along for conversations ranging from the profound to the self-deprecatingly ridiculous (Greame's telegrams, anyone?).

I love reading through books with David, Tim and Angelina and the continuing the conversation after the podcast with their readers in the Close Reads FB group. If you'd like to start reading for yourself again, this podcast is a great start.

Excellent resource for HS Lit. teachers
I love this podcast so much that I have required my 11th grade American lit students to subscribe so that they can listen to the Flannery O'Connor episodes when we get to our short stories unit!

Entertaining and challenging
I started listening this summer with Brideshead Revisited. I hadn't heard of the book or podcast before, but on a whim gave it a shot after seeing in the list of Circe podcasts with the Mason Jar. I was challenged and inspired in my reading. I'm hooked. As a Charlotte Mason homeschooling mama, this podcast nourishes my own lifelong learning.

Oprah's book club has nothing on Close Reads
If a book club could develop a cult following, this podcast has the three personalities that could accidentally pull it off.
Angelina, Tim, and David bring the things. Graeme brings the art and sardonic wit.
Even if you've read a book ten times, you get new insight on your favorite story when it goes through Close Reads. They connect the author's biography and culture, geo, political, historical context, and even movie trivia into an easy to follow conversation. It is the perfect venue to read books you always thought would be boring. Angelina, Tim, and David always make it fun.
Then, on the FB page, you can ask questions, make jokes, or lobby for future Close Reads. Apparently, all CR podcast listeners are kind, because the follow up chatter is always welcoming.

Strangers as friends
I didn't even know what "close reading" meant before this podcast. What a thoughtful, encouraging, and enriching show this is. The hosts have become friends who have helped me (a homeschooling mom of 5) fill up so I can pour out for my family.

Fan-tabulous!
This ain't no chicken soup for the soul, this is tri-tip and cheesecake for the soul.
The discussions aren't only about the book--they're about other books, and about the historic setting of the book-- but most impossibly, those conversations light from different angles the setting of the present. They enlarge the world of the book, and enlarge my world too.
I absolutely love Angelina, Tim, and David, and their insights truly leave me excited and inspired about life and the world around me.
One more note: now I understand the difference between rhetorical and dialectic. I listened to another book discussion that somehow seemed flat. Why? It just felt like we were working thru the questions at the end of a chapter. CiRCE demonstrates the provocative beauty of the art of rhetorical discussion of literature. All sorts of material is brought forth from Shakespeare to Tolstoy to Hemingway into the conversation with the ease of The Far Side comics.

Favorite Podcast
Close Reads is my favorite podcast. I've been challenged and encouraged to read things I might not have otherwise and to slow down and really think about what I'm reading. The hosts are great, and I laugh so much every episode that my kids come ask what's so funny.

I love podcasts, and this has become my favorite one. Following along, laughing, and learning keeps me up-to-date on reading very high quality literature. This increases the satisfaction I have with how I use my time, what I think about, and how I interact with books. Five stars.

I love this book club
I started listening to Close Reads because I'm a literature loving mom who doesn't have the time to be in a book club. Close Reads fills that gap for me. I listen to the books being discussed and then listen to the podcast while still accomplishing my duties. It's a win win. This podcast actually helps me to be a better reader. David, Tim and Angelina are modeling for me a better way to read and think about literature. And did I mention they are a blast to listen to? They have me laughing right out loud at times. I highly recommend this podcast.

Understand great books better!
The really great books make you work. But Angelina, Tim, and David (and sometimes Andrew) shoulder some of that workload. This podcast helps me read better, understand more, and enjoy great literature. I do a little happy dance when a new episode pops up!

Never going to give you up!
Close Reads has become my favorite and currently only hobby. I'm amazed by the gifted intelligence of David, Tim, and Angeline.
These guys and the community of Close Readers has given me mental and spiritual food for my soul.
I eagerly await each episode and I've read books I normally would not even pick up, or in some cases I would not have ever heard about.
This is my favorite community.
Thanks guys!

Worth Your Time
I have been listening to this pocast since the beginning, and I am excited each time a new episode is posted. Not only have I learned so much about the books and stories we have enjoyed together, but I have also been personally challenged. I am a different person now than I was before I read Wendell Berry, Flannery O'Connor, and Evelyn Waugh. Enjoy!

A New Favorite
I started listening to Close Reads, because I knew I needed a little guidance in my reading. I honestly thought it would simply keep me accountable to read books I might otherwise neglect and perhaps assist me interacting with my children as we homeschool.
It is so much more. I adore the books and conversation. I look forward to each episode. I am now that crazy person contributing to the conversation being played over the car speakers.
Close Reads has opened my eyes to depths in literature I knew was there, but I couldn't quite reach. LISTEN TO IT.
