The good, the bad, and the funny
The good: Well researched, great presentation of timelines in episode order, FULL of good info and presents the whole story. The bad: Diction could improve. Too woke and apologetic, which is what you can expect from Californians- It’s like another planet when compared to the Midwest. The funny: They talk about driving routes/highways just like the SNL skit “The Californians”.

Get in with it.
I came to this podcast to hear the story of Steven Styner. Lord the first 28 minutes consists of the telling about the town & their own life experiences. Like get on with telling the story already. If I wanted a geographically lesson I’d go to a different podcast.

Interesting but tends to lose focus
Interesting cases, good research, discussion needs focus. Conversation tends to veer off topic, taking deep dives into the podcasters personal opinions on social issues that are often times difficult to ascribe to the time period of the piece. It also makes the episodes too long and disjointed.

Good stories. Long winded
I like that this podcast has a lot of cases that other podcasts don’t cover. However, each case drags on for 3-7 episodes. By the time the last one comes up. I’ve lost interest and looked it up online

Too much other talk
I just came across this podcast and was excited to listen to CA true crime and I like the dynamic between the hosts BUT way too much talk about history/laws etc For example I listened to the first episode of the Steven staynor episode and they didn’t even start talking about the actual crime until about 35 minutes into episode. Initial part was about the geography of Merced/Modesto etc and even during the test of episode way too much talk about the laws during that time and generic history info rather than the actual case. I’ve had to hit the fast forward button more than any other podcast. For example right now they’ve been talking about the age you can get legally married in CA and Texas and the exact laws during that Time and why for the last 5 minutes

The big game disaster
I was super excited when I saw the title but within 5 mins of listening, the dude talks about how he doesn’t like football. I don’t care what you like personally, just don’t say that right before you talk about a subject. It really turned me off so I didn’t continue. Maybe don’t be so honest about a topic your about discuss because it weakens the excitement like a cook saying they messed up a dish as they’re giving it to you.

Best coverage I have heard of true crimes
I was referred to you by a friend, Carrie. After listening, I had to write this review to let the creators know what a great job they do. I remember the Steven Stayner story as I grew up in Modesto. I was taught to be afraid of strangers not only because of this story but because my cousin was kidnapped and my Aunt was murdered by a stranger 2 days after giving birth to him. Thankfully he was returned very quickly. You all do such a terrific job setting the stage and making your audience aware of the area, the population, the laws and the overall social climate of the time. I have been bingeing for a few weeks now, but I had to take a moment to pause after the last episode about Steven Stayner, have a cry and a moment to remember the man he was not the “kid who was kidnapped”. Thank you for all you do.

Overall I really like this podcast; but Jessica’s baby whisper voice is so agitating that I’m ready to drop off. Step up lady, own that discursive space, the cutesy baby voice is entirely discrediting.

In depth
This show is great. Unlike most true crime shows this podcast doesn’t get tempted to use sensationalism to draw listeners in. I am from California, but I believe that people from any locale will be able to dive in and enjoy. They present the facts in an entertaining and interesting way, yet listeners can still form their own opinions on the cases. The hosts have an excellent rapport and you can tell they genuinely enjoy working together. The amount of research and attention to detail that goes into each show is astounding. I’m 6 episodes deep and I still find myself anticipating the next opportunity I get to listen. Great job

An interesting take on my home state.
I first subscribed to this podcast while looking for episodes about the Children of Thunder case. Then I saw 13 episodes about Steven Stayner and decided to give that a listen. Now I think I’m hooked on this podcast. The information about different localities and the insights into other topics are incredibly interesting. 👍🏾👍🏾

So California.
I love true crime. But you guys spend soo much time on political correctness. Clarifying in detail what words or phrases mean or meant at another time. And how you disagree. Over sensitiveness, political correction. I never want to hurt anyone’s feelings. But I’m a native Californian and I can’t stand this. You spend more time defending your position than talking true crime. You make California look bad. I put up with 8 years of Obama, I didn’t like it or vote for it but I stood by it. But his ugly godforsaken legacy shows its self here.

West Coast Crime
California True Crime encompasses all the factors needed for a successful true crime podcast. It shares interesting stories, includes facts, and has hosts with interesting perspectives added to the subject being discussed. Prior to checking this show out, I didn’t realize California offered a near limitless source of true crime tales. Highly recommend for anyone interested true crime, especially those on the west coast

Great Podcast!
Love the background history appropriate for the period of the crime, lots of details and research in this podcast. The hosts don’t engage in much personal chitchat in the beginning of the podcast. They dive right into the background information and then the crime. Definitely one of my new favorites, good job! Don’t pay attention to the negative reviews, try it for yourself, I am glad I did!

Out of their depth
The amount of speculation and lack of knowledge exhibited by the performers makes it seem like they are out of their depth. They have no legal background, no law enforcement background. They seem like they’re telling a story and hoping their lack of expertise does not matter to the listener.

Nicely Done!
Listened to Ep 1, which is arguably the hardest one and, gotta say, it was pretty flawless. As a native of the Bay Area (though live in New England now), I remember this case. Made me sick. CTC handled it like the pros they are and would remind you of Nic and the Captain, sans beer. One thing I’d love ke to give props for is Charles’ statement that the problems/evil reside in the people, NOT the religious institution. It’s my opinion that it was objectively and evenly handled. Thanks!

Great true crime podcast!
The structure of the first episode was well organized, following a clear timeline with small bits of perspective(given by Sean or Charles) from either those involved with the crime or those closely affiliated with the murderers. Also, the tidbits of historical facts are pretty smart, cause it can give the listener a sense of the exact time in history at which this took place. All of this is done within a very reasonable amount of time for someone to digest a true crime story. I can appreciate their concern for their listeners by giving an early warning about the graphic content and also their respect for those who might be affiliated with a religious sect, stating that information is only involved because it heavily influenced the upbringing of those involved in the crime. The fact that I haven’t heard of this story till now when it is a relatively recent crime is very surprising and has me intrigued about what else you all have dug up from the archives. I’m definitely looking forward to more episodes from this group! Keep it up!
