- Tracy Zambory - The mental health affects of COVID on nursesImagine being called a hero one day, with love, respect and accolades being shown, to seemingly over night being spat at and called a murderer as you entered your place of work. Imagine holding a tablet for someone as their loved ones had to say their final good byes virtually. Imagine being so understaffed, over worked you, yet dedicated, you didn't leave work for days at a time. That was the reality for nurses during COVID and unfortunately not much has gotten better. This week's guest is Tracy Zambory, President of SUN (Saskatchewan Union of Nurses). Tracy describes what it was like for nurses during that time and the effects nurses are still dealing today as well as her own families issues with mental health and addiction. - 85. Pam Hutchings - Fighting to find a diagnosis for my daughterPam's daughter Taryn was a normal teen, maybe even exceptional. Taryn was succeeding in advanced classes in school, a dancer and athlete. Then seemingly over night Taryn became suicidal, hearing voices and seeing things that weren't there. Over the last 7 months, Taryn has spent most of it in the hospital. Pam had to leave her job to become a care giver for Taryn all while trying to find medications and treatments that could have any affect on Taryn's health. In the midst of the chaos, Pam and Taryn started a non for profit group for teens suffering with mental illness and their caregivers Teens Talk YXE. - 84. Jayne Bigelsen - Maladaptive DaydreamingWhat if you were so addicted to something you couldn't even have a conversation in a restaurant without wanting to run to the bathroom to use, you were losing friends , jobs and school? What if I told you that something you were addicted to was daydreaming? That was Jayne's reality for years and the that disorder is now called maladaptive daydreaming. Jayne is considered by many as patient X because she is one of the first people to have papers written about her condition and the first person to get brain scans done while in her daydreaming state. Thanks to the internet and social media thousands of people now consider themselves as maladaptive daydreamers however, the condition is yet to make it into the DSM-5 (the bible of psychiatric conditions). Jayne is trying to change that and to spread awareness. - 74. Shiva Souri - Did my family die while I was sleepingShiva's entire family is in Iran while she is a student in Canada. Every morning she wakes up to check her phone to see if her family is still alive. The Iranian people are currently protesting the Islamic Republic, including members of Shiva's family. Over 18,000 people have so far been detained by the Islamic Republic since the start of the anti-regime protests in September, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA). Of those, 506 had been killed (including 69 children and teenagers) as of Dec. 21, 2022. With already living with challenges like depression, anxiety, home sickness, pressures from school, work and living in a foreign country, Shiva must now live with the fact her family's lives are being threatened. However, Shiva has hope the regime will fall and Iran will be free again. - 73. The June Bug System - I share my body with over 30 people because of my dissociative identity disorderThe June Bug System is one of the most fascinating people I've ever talked with. They have over 30 personalities or alters, including a cat, men and women, left and right handed people, and even a non potty trained toddler. They also suffer from PNES (psychogenic non epileptic seizures) and PTSD from growing up with extreme trauma. Life gets complicated for The June Bug System, and maybe more so for their partner Cody, as they are parents of a new baby girl. Their main passion is spreading mental health awareness and ending stigmas around DID.
