Hey Carlene and Jill!! I’m a Cynthia so I had to accept the challenge to write a review for one of my FAVORITE podcasts!! I found this podcast in 2020 when I had more time to listen to podcasts. I look forward to listening each Wednesday and whenever Jill and Carlene do bonus episodes! If you love all things beauty this podcast is one for you! These ladies know the market, give great advice and suggestions at all price points. I have found some great products based on listening and saved money because I trust their opinions! Learned things that changed my skin!
I listen to this podcast pretty regularly and had to write a review because I’ve realized half the products I use, I learned about from this podcast. My skin has changed after using the advice they get from their skincare guests (like when to exfoliate and use retinol) and I have way less breakouts and more even-ness. Kinda like a dermatologist in my pocket. Thanks for what you do, ladies!

Jill and Carlene have the credibility and background to attract great guests and I ALWAYS learn something. Supergoop sunscreen misinformation
By listening to the one of the recent Podcasts ( ep. 234) I realized that the main purpose of this one is promoting and advertising. After listening 3 times to the Supergoop founder episode I went ahead and purchased a few product thinking I finally found a product that I would use happily every day including my 1,3 and 11 year old children since Mrs. Thaggard claims that is very safe for children. Then I started digging in some medical studies and found out that there is no such a thing as clean chemical and that zinc used for children safe sunscreen is not made in lab but used in the lab to produce zinc mineral sunscreen for kids. Supergoop sunscreen though has exact same active components as other non zinc popular sunscreens with the only difference that Supergoop has half of the Homosalate ( 7% vs 15%) and exact same amount of Avobenzone, Octisalate and Octocrylene that when exposed to sunlight brake down and release free radicals that can potentially cause some kind of cancers other than skin cancer. For that exact reason those kind of sunscreens are banned in most of the European countries. I’m conclusion I want to admit that indeed supergoop from esthetic point of view has extraordinary feel, unlike any sunscreen but in terms of health concerns is not any better than what we already have on the market for half of its price! Huge fan!
I love love love this podcast! Jill and Carlene are incredibly knowledgeable on the beauty industry and give real advice and feedback on the best products to try. I love all the different types of episodes from the interviews with creators to the glow down episodes. I’ve purchased some of their top shelf products and have loved all of them. Many will now be constants in my beauty routine, including the bum bum cream and Tatcha’s silk liquid primer!

It would have been a 5/5 BUT…
These ladies are so lovely. The only drawback to listening to this show is that they do not pronounce words right, and this will happen more than you think. They pronounce Tati Westbrook’s first name wrong, Eczema has been pronounced wrong, and the brand Amika is pronounced wrong. It takes me so long to realize what these ladies are speaking about half the time, because they mispronounce so many things. I wanted to find another beauty podcast because i love fat mascara, and this podcast truly would be so great if they would take the time to learn how to pronounce things!

I am hoping that they will start consistently asking white guests the same or similar questions that they’ve asked their Black and Brown guests regarding inclusivity. They’ve done it here and there. Informative and On-Trend with a Community to Back It
I started listening to the Breaking Beauty Podcast during the pandemic when I needed something fresh in my routine. I was trying to wear less makeup, but I still wanted to know what was going on in the beauty community. Jill and Carlene do an amazing job of rotating types of episodes, from founder interviews to round-ups of the best products of the year. In interview episodes, they have so many thoughtful questions prepared, and they’ve even handled their fair share of guests who interview poorly/become defensive of their work (*cough Dr. Barbara Sturm cough*). And my last favorite thing is that the podcast is connected to a Facebook group, where beauty lovers exchange recommendations and favorites. I will keep listening as long as they wish to continue to put out new episodes!

I’m 45 years old & this past year I’ve started to pay more attention to my skin particularly on my face. 5 years ago I lost a lot of weight & I thought I’d have to look at my “turkey neck” the rest of my life because a neck lift is pricey. I also spent every summer basking in the sun at the shores of Lake Erie. My pale Irish skin turned red then brown. I have a lot of sun damage. After doing some googling I came across a boatload of info that was so interesting! But it was also slightly confusing, (acids, serums, lasers...). I searched for “skincare” & started listening to this podcast, along with a few others, but by far this is my fave!! I have learned SO much! I had no idea there was so many options for procedures that aren’t necessarily surgical. (“Bring out the lasers!” ~ Dr. Evil 😆) I also hadn’t a clue on the advancement of skin products. I thought a lot of them were untruthful & a farce. Jill & Carlene are so informative, genuine & aren’t product pushers. They ask & answer the questions I’ve had. I’m now wearing sunscreen daily & using products that are veered towards what I’m trying to improve. I can’t get over the difference in the look & feel of my skin since switching up my routine. I’m up to par on every episode! I look forward every week on what the topic will be. 👏🏼👏🏼

A Must Listen!!!
I got into podcasts during quarantine and immediately fell in love with Breaking Beauty! Flash forward a few weeks and I was fully caught up on the back catalog. Jill and Carlene are fantastic hosts! They even promptly answered a question that I DM’d them within 24 hours regarding products! I love the guests, and this is a great platform to learn about new beauty products and founders!! This is a must listen!

A source of peace, soothing, fun and information in the pandemic
I started listening to learn how to improve my skin but a stayed for one of the best 45 minutes of the week. I have learned so much from Jill and Carlene, but more than that, listening to them couldn’t be more enjoyable! They have lovely voices and their interaction, and the way we learn just a little about their lives, is so engaging and delightful. They are also very knowledgeable and professional—down to the cadence of their speech. And no distracting “ums”! There is something so soothing about this podcast—I often listen more than once to absorb the info, but before bed I’ll also listen to relax. It’s self-care. Oh, and my skin has never looked better!

The real deal
Starting listening to this at the beginning of the pandemic and I’ve learned so much already from this show! Love that Carlene and Jill keep it relatable yet they really know their stuff and are willing to give an honest review. I still tell people to listen to the Isle of Paradise episode, so funny and also it set me straight from years of self-tanning fails so thanks ladies 🙌🏻

This show is not only fun and informative, but a great break from pandemic and political fatigue. Carlene and Jill do a great job interviewing and researching. Don’t know why Dr. Sturm got so bothered by some very basic logical interview questions. Carlene and Jill handled the guest’s rudeness with grace, but left me feeling that Dr. Sturm got something to hide???

Overall great podcast
These ladies do a wonderful job getting information that the listener really wants. Their latest person however Dr Sterm? Was so rude. I almost wish they did not post the episode. Totally not their fault the person being interviewed was so cold but it kind of took away from me looking forward to the episode. They wanted to talk about all this person does and she quickly shut them down and were like aren’t we here to talk about the cream that everyone can get? It was so awkward. Hopefully nothing but nice people from here on out.

It has also been great to find a Podcast that really tries to ensure all are represented and they are willing to listen to make improvements for awareness regarding representation. Since I started listening to Breaking Beauty, I have more confidence in skincare, makeup and overall beauty, since I am more informed and more inclined to be informed about products, treatments, etc. I just cannot say enough about the Podcast and its excellent quality. A must subscribe for beauty lovers
Jill and Carlene are the absolute best. As beauty editors they can give you the real run down on all beauty items, skin, make up and even hair care. The guests are all relevant people I want to hear from and they are great interviewers! I love this podcast so much that when I start the episode and the theme song plays and I hear them go “I’m Carlene Higgins and I’m Jill Dune” I smile bc of how relaxing and comforting this podcast can be during such uncertain times.

I stumbled across this podcast with quarantine in full swing and to say I love these conversations is an understatement. I love my kids but all day kids only conversations until hubby gets home can be tough and is pretty easy to kinda feel worn down and permanently tired. The fact that they are all about things self care is a home run. I never felt like I found a podcast that I fully embodied bc they were only about topics/genres that I found interesting not topics I was passionate about. You know, I can talk about roses but I don’t really wanna talk gardening. It’s an easy listen and doesn’t feel overwhelming like when I have it playing while doing work in the office. Can’t wait to hear what the future holds for y’all 🙂

Good overall but
My only negative feedback is that when I click a podcast with a guest- I hate that they take 10 minutes before actually bringing them on. I do love the podcast (episodes: Emily Weiss, Tara Harper) the list goes on.. there are so many great episodes with amazing content. I just wish the podcasts would start immediately with the guest instead of the super long rambling into beforehand.

By far the best podcast out there for all of us beauty and skincare lovers! I honestly was never able to get into podcasts no matter how hard I tried until Jill and Carlene came into my life! Not only have I listened to every single episode but I have listened to MULTIPLE episode MULTIPLE times. I have stepped up my knowledge around a better skincare and overall beauty routine and always enjoy laughs from these two while doing so! The real deal
This beauty podcast is the real deal. They’ve had so many iconic guests on their podcast talking about everything from drug store to high end. I love that they’re normal women like most of us listening. I also enjoying when they have people call in and give their advice I think that’s a super cool added bonus to podcasts. @jennlynnnnnn

Misinformed, shallow conversation
Interesting topics but the hosts go on about random annoying + unrelated tangents that aren't interesting. I just listened to an episode "Summer Empties" and they start off by talking about all the 'Celebrities' they've spotted that week lol what? who cares– big yawn. They then go talking about a product that's been endorsed by another celebrity as if that means anything, and then talk up Kora (Miranda Kerr's line). From this episode they just seem to idolize celebrities in an annoying way and can't just stick to the topic in a factual, straight-forward manner. There's also a lot of misinformed points stated as fact "your pores are just so much more open in a city because it's so hottttt". Pores don't open/close. Then there's the 'natural is better' mindset which is also cringy in skin science today. I want to like this podcast because the subject is interesting but it's really a tough one.

They are both are so well informed but do not sound like they’re reading from a script, rather they’re conversational and off the cuff - so funny that I LOL at times. Great Interviews, Not Great Science
I really enjoy the podcast, learning about how brands were created and products brought to market is always fascinating. I love a behind the scenes look at the industry. However, there is a tremendous amount of misinformation/“clean beauty” that goes unquestioned or uncritiqued. I hope the hosts will consider including physicians and cosmetic chemists on the podcast as well or at least engage in some fact checking. The latest episode’s “partnership” seemed to hinge a lot on the hosts just going along with the narrative the sponsor had provided and repeating things like “detox” and “clean”.

Oddly unaware of listeners
I just got done listening to episode 69 and I am so frustrated. They’d been talking for a while telling us things we already know, like which brushes are best where and to wash brushes often (DUH.) Then patty mentions storage and how important it is and I peeked up! What? How should I be storing them? How does Patty store gets? I’ll never know because they were to excited to wash brushes on air (????) Like what? How is this useful to your listener? I love this podcast but sometimes hosts forget they have an audience and unfortunately episode 69 is one of those.

Lovely ladies!!
The only beauty podcast I will listen to. The people they interview are top notch and they have a ridiculous amount of knowledge about the beauty community. Other podcasts in this realm kind of seem like they are attacking their guests with questions, but Carlene and Jill have a laid back chat while asking all of the questions that their listeners would want to ask. A+++

Accuracy & Context needed
Listening to Ep #50 made me want to write in. First of all, throwing a mascara out after three months as a rule is insane. The beauty industry has continued to shorten the life of mascara even as technology has improved. I wonder why? None other than fleecing the poor consumer. It totally depends on how much you use the mascara and other factors only the user can determine such as drying out, clumping, contamination, etc. Really, in three weeks your mascara dries out? Only if you are using it a billion times a day. And Snapscara comes in four shades, not three. Maybe I ask too much from beauty editors to check the industry instead of promoting costly nonsense. Credibility reduced in this pod.

Good content, but the structure is disappointing
Heard my first episode, #26 with Caroline Hirons. The part with Hirons was great, learned something new and it amused me. BUT it took you 20 minutes to get to the topic that you advertised in the tittle and description!!! This made me very frustrated because when I click on something it’s because I am interested in what it advertises. After, I hear the bit with Hirons, you would have me hooked and I’d love to hear about the mascar and whatever other news you have. But by the time I got to hear Hirons I was upset that you’d wasted 20 minutes of my time with information I was not interested in. Good content, but you’re structure disappoints.

This is my favorite podcast of all time. Not only is it light, fun, and feel-good but it is educational. It will be the most fun and entertaining knowledge you ever gain. The topics covered are the answers to every woman’s questions that require digging and researching. I have been introduced to so many great skin routines and products that have made the biggest difference... I cannot rave enough about this channel. Do yourself a favor and listen.

Fat Mascara’s Cool Canadian Cousin
Okay first of all, to the person who doesn’t know what Sephoria is... it’s a Sephora event called Sephoria (Sephora + Utopia). I fricken love this podcast. It really is the Canadian version of Fat Mascara. Though I love Jen and Jess, they kind of remind me of the popular girls who always look great but their idea of getting wild is making skinny margaritas and splitting a gluten free pizza. Which, there’s nothing wrong with that, but I feel like Jill and Carlene would be down to smoke a bowl. Different vibes, same great content, I would explode if they ever did a cross over. Shout out to Jackie Johnson for introducing me to Breaking Beauty via Natch Beaut!

Constructive Feedback
Love the podcast! However, your guest this past episode used the word “transgendered” in reference to a transgender model. At least twice. I cringed. Transgender is an adjective, should never be used as a noun and also should never be have ‘ed’ added to it, from a grammar and respect standpoint. You don’t say “gayed” or “latina-ed” or “whited.” This review was originally a 5 Star with just some feedback on transgender terminology, but after finishing the episode I’m revising. A body positivity episode ended with everyone talking about how bad they looked that day and a comment about how Amy Winehouse “looked as messed up as she was” to a roomful of laughter as a response. Disrespecting yourselves and then a musician who died after long struggling addiction is not a good look.

Bad audio, Good content
Great content, but really bad audio quality. The levels seem lower than all other podcasts I listen to, and the clarity is also lacking at times (like they aren’t using the best equipment???). I had it on full-bast in my car and still couldn’t hear portions of the Biologique Reserche/Dr. Philippe Allouche episode, for example. PLEASE fix the audio and keep up the great work on the interviews!

The beauty podcast I’ve been waiting for
I’ve only listened to 2 so far, but this might end up being my favorite beauty podcast. The other ones I listen to are Natch Beaut, Fat Mascara, and Glowing Up. It has what the others don’t have as much of - interviews with the founders of beauty brands.

LOVE THIS PODCAST
They have GREAT guests and do an amazing job at summarizing and having the guest tell the story themselves. I wish interviews were like 4 hours long LOL my only issue is that some interviews have low quality audio - it sounds too far like with Davis Factor but other than that, 10/10 recommend! I’m also in the beauty industry doing PR so I appreciate this podcast!

Great Podcast!
I'm an avid podcast listener and have fallen in love with the Breaking Beauty podcast. Each episode is well produced and the hosts are both wonderful. I usually listen to podcasts while at work and I've found myself replaying all the currently available episodes as I find them insightful and entertaining. These episodes don't come out fast enough! While all the episodes are great my favorites have been with the founder of Caudalie, Mathilde Thomas (I could listen to her speak all day and I'm obsessed with the beauty elixir), the founder of the 7 Virtues, Barb Stegeman (very eloquent, confident, and passionate about her mission), and the founders of Nudestix, Ally and Taylor Frankel (Both teens when, with their mother, started a makeup line- fascinating story, fun girls, and their take on beauty and makeup is refreshing). Keep up the great work!
