Really, really wanted to love this...
There is nothing “sort of” about foreign policy, but when “sort of” pops up in every sentence of analysis, I can’t bear it.

Simp’s Bombshell trio...
Goes out as usual. In the bag. And loyal to the Bombshell Trio’s Core (Lack of) in Principles: 1. Maximize the portfolio gains of the Military Spending Sugar Daddies who have their hands around the throats and lesser earning potentials of the Bombshell trio; 2. Further their careers as D.C. representatives of their Military Spending Sugar Daddies; and, of course, 3. Ignore any and all competent discussion regarding the foreign and military policies of the First-Ever Criminally Indicted Sitting Ruler in the Land of Meir Kahane. Money. Power. The Land of Meir Kahane. The only reasons the Bombshell trio exists.

Why I love bombshell.
I love the policy talk. I love hearing a female version of reality. Had plenty of the other. Fools in this admin are doing a not so fine job. Also. Whilst cleaning today I started working through the list I made from their lengthy Pop Culture segment. Netflix Homecoming about Beyoncé. I’m nearly 70. I don’t understand most of the lyrics. I LOVED her brilliance. Thank you ladies for this lead. I cried because I miss Maya Angelou. ( she’s in this) I stopped cleaning. I opened a beer. I had a great afternoon. And I am not more hip and always more informed by bombshell.

Listener for a couple months now and I was hoping for an objective national security analysis & discussion, but quite frankly, it’s just a few left leaning ladies constantly reminding you of how educated they are...and then bashing anything Trump does or any policy his administration enacts. Lots of NATSEC discussion, but hardly any analysis or critical thought regarding pressing issues.

These killer brilliant women and their guests have helped me understand many complex issues with wit, perspective, humor, and insight without bogging me down. Amazing Nat’l Security Overview
BL: Love this podcast and adore these women! As a grad student of national security affairs and military officer, the weekly issue of bombshell provides a great and balanced overview of the current, hot topics. They discuss and dissect current events with great insights, and make it interesting and easy to digest. Also, their backgrounds are diverse to give a spread of perspectives, and they are always entertaining. Some guests are more interesting than others, but usually add greatness to the show. However, the basic crew of women suffices to cover the majority of topics. A must subscribe!!!

As a woman in cybersecurity and international conflict, I need these ppl to be my BFFs.
I am absolutely staggered at the joy I feel knowing this podcast exists. I thought Vaginal Fantasy was the only series that had ladies talking about things I care about while drinking wine (supernatural romance, gender roles in creativity, Sauvignon Blanc, writing fiction from a female perspective) but I am here to tell you that as a woman with multiple degrees in political science and international relations, I am so blown away that something like this is out in the world. I have spent a lot of my life not having women friends who share my interests, and this is totally the podcast I am listening to while reading Le Monde Diplo and The Economist while eating an omelet on Saturday morning.

Getting too comfortable
As a War on the Rocks reader & listener, I was pleased that its media offerings were expanding to include a second podcast in 2016. The format of having the same hosts discuss topics of interest was sufficiently different than the War on the Rocks podcast format of interviewing an expert about their topic of interest to justify the second offering. The format has allowed the hosts to become more familiar to one another and to the audience. This has both pros and cons. A potential positive is that the hosts can develop a line of argumentation across multiple episodes and use the events of the week (or fortnight) to illustrate the argument in its many dimensions. (See Benjamin and Tamara Wittes and Susan Hennessey's well-honed approaches on Rational Security for the gold standard in this field). The cons include the chance that the hosts may get too chummy and elide their discussions to knowing looks and phrases that convey lots of meaning to those who are "in" on it but fail to bring the rest of the audience along (see the devolution of David Rothkopf's Foreign Policy Editor's Roundtable to his Deep State Radio for a fine illustration of this phenomenon). Regrettably to me, the analytic depth that I had come to expect has declined over the past number of months The Bombshell hosts seem to have stopped developing a line of argument across shows and instead devolved into off-the-cuff impressions of what they read in the paper or on Twitter this week. Furthermore, their chumminess has concommitantly increased and has raised the barriers to entry to feel as if you are part of the gang. It is like when when two of your friends begin to have a relationship outsside fo a group setting and start sharing in-jokes between themselves while in the larger group. After awhile a sense of alienation sets in. In any event, the pickings in this field are slim and Bombshell still is worth listening to. It just does not deliver the same value (to me) as it once did.

Sometimes the microphone work could be better. While I enjoy the laughing at a good quip, the peak levels, even at a moderate volume, kills the ears. Everything else is stellar! Relevant and timely topics, well informed hosts who bring the conversation down to the level of the civilian (instead of talking in the wonk-clouds), and diverse and knowledgeable guests. And KU representation to boot! Rock chalk and keep on! (P.S. The Boltzmann distribution deserves some love. Economics, environmental, and general mathematics...the trifecta!)

Bombshell!
I love this podcast. A podcast by a group of expert women with real government/national security experience. They sometimes offer an interesting perspective of what it’s like to be women in this predominantly male field, but simply in a matter-of-fact fashion of a few anecdotes and thoughts rather than making it a predominant theme or shoving it in your face. But don’t get the idea that’s the main story, the real take home is an entertaining group of presenters giving expert opinions on current national security and government affairs.

Do you enjoy political podcasts like Pod Saves America but wish for more pragmatism and female perspectives? Bombshell is for you. Loren, Erin and Radha are seasoned veterans as career government workers under different administrations. They are wickedly funny, and deeply knowledgeable about their subjects. Wonder how State Dept, the military branches and the intel community really function and how they're being affected? Bombshell will tell you. I'm a 20 year-old undergrad who, despite having a huge appetite for military and national security affairs, often lacks the foundation of living and reading for decades. Great content, rough production
Love love love the content on this podcast. It's an policy area that really interests me but was not on my regular check-in radar. Now it is. Came over from a mention on Marketplace's Make Me Smart. The ONLY reason I cannot give this podcast 5 stars is the production value. I find myself increasingly distracted by having to skip back multiple times in an episode because volume levels dropped too low, especially when I'm on the road. Please take this with a grain of salt since my long-time vocation has been radio broadcast and audio production. Loren has an ideal and consistent delivery, whether that's on purpose or not (vocal quality, proximity to mic, etc). Radha often starts strong but peters out to mumbling at the end of a sentence. Erin is simply way too quiet to hear 99% of the time without cranking the volume, which of course gets blown out when someone else jumps in. If audio levels could be normalized somehow (or if mic proximity could be emphasized), this would be a bangin' pod. Now, about those drinks... Buffalo Trace is good if a little passé. May I suggest a Ron Medellin 8-year extra anejo rum from Colombia. Throw that into a (Cuban) Manhattan and have a day :)

Now more than ever, Americans need to have greater understanding of how our government works and how good domestic and foreign policy works to keep us safe. The hosts have a wide variety of experience and education in political policy and discuss in a manner that makes it understandable for the rest of us. Highly recommend.

Excellent but sometimes frivolous.
These ladies are among the most astute and experienced security experts in the podcast world, meriting the attention of any student of foreign policy. However, the insistence on trivial public interest topics so as not to discourage or dishearten the audience is immaterial and distracts from the substance of the episodes. Recommend fewer "What's your favorite meal?" questions in favor of more analysis in these chaotic, unprecedented times.

A new favorite
A fantastic podcast hosted by three engaging experts on various facets of National Security. Between the relevent discussions of current security challenges, explorations of the interagency process, and the necessary discussion of cocktails, this is definitely a keeper for anyone that is professionally or personally involved with the larger foreign policy and security community.

Something for everybody
Bombshell is phenomenal! I'm personally not big on national security podcasts, because most seem to repeat the news of the day and I'd rather just read the news, thanks all the same, but the Bombshell hosts do a great job contextualizing what's happening in the world and getting at the bigger themes and issues without losing their audience in jargon and acronyms. There's something here both for people who are new to the national security world as well as for folks for whom this is their bread and butter. Plus, the hosts are fun and funny and while they take the subjects seriously, they don't take themselves terribly seriously. Really can't recommend this podcast highly enough.

Great NatSec podcast
Market getting close to saturation but Bombshell managed to find its voice almost immediately and has a different clearly differentiated point of view (+1hr/bi-monthly format makes it easier to add to list of podcasts to keep track of)

Fans of Pod Saves America, Slate's Gabfest or the Brookings Cafeteria
I listen to roughly 4 hours of podcasts per day and this is probably the best hour I spend each week. Not only are these three women exceptionally knowledgeable about national security (because they've worked for our defense organizations at home and aborad) and our political environment; they are hilarious. It is refreshing to listen to three non-white dudes talk about what's going on and how to make sense of our world.

National Security with a side of bourbon and shower champagne
This biweekly podcast from the War on the Rocks team is just in time for the Trump administration. It features Erin Simpson, a Harvard counterinsurgency PhD and former CEO of Caerus; Loren DeJonge Schulman, a former DoD and NSC senior staffer in the Obama administration; and Radha Iyengar Plumb, a Princeton PhD with years of experience at DoD, Energy, and RAND. As the cast list and double entendre title suggest, this is being marketed as natsec from a female point of view. With women well-represented in the natsec podcast world, the real selling point is the team's ability to filter the firehouse of news through the lens of decades of diverse education and experience, with a side of bourbon and shower champagne.

A "must listen" for any aspiring NatSec wonk
A fantastic podcast, and chock full of valuable insight on the national security and interagency community. The show is hosted by three knowledgeable national security practitioners; it should be on everyone's playlist. Plus, when this show comes out, I know my commute will involve far less loud and incoherent swearing at Beltway drivers, and more professional development. So that's a plus.

- Then One Foggy Christmas EveIn the tradition of British dramas, Erin, Loren, and Radha reunite for a special holiday episode. The ladies flip the script, answering a range of questions from the first ever Manniversary guest Kai Ryssdal. They then return to some of their greatest hits including transition process, civ-mil issues, and personnel policy replete with process details and holiday movie analogies. Stay through the end to hear pop culture recommendations and special appearances from many former guests with answers to their favorite Bombshell questions.0 comments0
- One for the RoadFor their 100th episode, Erin, Loren and Radha discuss new issues, like the escalating conflict at the Ethiopia-Eritrea border, old issues, like HVT targeting of al- Qaeda leadership, and, of course, continuing trade issues with China. They then turn to a discussion of all the White House mayhem (Ok, not all! No one has that kind of time), including lack of legal authority for Department of Homeland Security leadership to make decisions about DACA, the Defense Department “purge,” and the complicated, not-quite-yet-started transition of the Biden administration. The team ties a bow on this episode with a discussion of holiday movies and other pop culture … and that's a wrap! - Bombshell Nov 3 · 56m Anticipation Is Making Me LateLoren, Erin, and Radha are joined by their most frequent guest (Kori Schake) and a new guest (Katrina Mulligan) to discuss foreign policy issues we'll need to worry about regardless of the election outcome! After a lively discussion, the ladies go over foreign policy issues that have been over-discussed, under-discussed, and the processes that will always be their valentines. They wrap up with pop culture, self-care, and indulgences to help get you through election day and beyond!0 comments0
- Final CountdownLoren, Radha, and Erin reconvene to explore many of Bombshell's greatest hits - Brexit, troop levels in Afghanistan, and arms control. With a dash of ethnic conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh thrown in for flavor. The ladies then drop a Bombshell of their own: this fair podcast will be wrapping up in 2020. It's the final countdown!0 comments0
- Karma Puh-leezeErin, Radha and Loren use COVID-19 as a frame to ask what this crazy time has brought to our attention, what it’s distracted is from, what it’s possibly helped, and how it’s shaped our own skills and interests. And shopping. - When There are NineThis week, Mira Rapp-Hooper and Rebecca Lissner return to the show to discuss American grand strategy, female partnerships, and their fabulous new book, An Open World: How America Can Win the Contest for Twenty-First Century Order. The ladies then revisit the administration’s foreign policy in the Middle East - with notes on the UAE-Israel accord and Iran sanctions drama. Also, Tiktok! Soothing pop-culture ties a bow on it.0 comments0
- I'm a Loser, BabyLoren, Radha, and Erin invite Camille Stewart, non-resident fellow at Harvard's Belfer Center, to discuss all the cyber threats and how individual behavior uniquely connects with our ability to mitigate or respond to them. In keeping up foreign relations, we provide short updates on Alexei Navalny, Belarus, and Brexit alongside a brief farewell to Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe. We'd like to remind you all that Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq are still a thing, and after all the takes have been shared on Trump's views on service members, we talk about the role of the press in this story.0 comments0
- It's Fun to Stay in the JCPOARadha, Erin, and Loren host Nina Jancowicz, disinformation fellow at the Wilson Center and author of How to Lose the Information War , to talk about the ongoing protests in Belarus and what we should read into the alleged poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. In keeping up foreign relations, the ladies explore the latest U.S. attempt to use the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA or “Iran nuclear deal”) — an agreement the United States ghosted on — to reinstate sanctions on Iran, and in White House mayhem they assess how the recent Senate Select Committee on Intelligence report on the 2016 election. Plus, process is our Valentine, but process can be used for evil ends, as we learned about the 2018 process to pursue family separation as an official U.S. policy. Unsurprisingly, we need a lot of pop culture to handle all this news.0 comments0
- Bombshell Aug 11 · 48m Tik Tok Ya Don’t StopThis week Erin and Radha regroup while Loren takes a much-deserved vacation. They do a quick review on COVID-19 with the good (100 days no new cases in New Zealand), the bad (cases in Brazil, India, and the United States continue to grow), and the ugly (long-term economic consequences in the United States, India, and Brazil). They also dig into the recent explosion and protests in Lebanon and then go deep on the recent executive order impacting TikTok and WeChat. After reminding us that Afghanistan is still a thing, they talk about the lack of accurate and comprehensive briefings for POTUS and the mayhem that ensues, including quotes (and misquotes) by Robert O'brien (yes, he's the national security advisor!). To calm us all down, they then talk about pop culture from baseball movies ( The Rookie, Bull Durham) to Arthurian legend-ish TV shows ( Cursed). And last, but certainly not least, the World Health Organization. The ladies then turn to White House/American mayhem and try to be analytical while lamenting ongoing violence against black Americans and the potential deployment of U.S. troops in American cities. - I'm On A BoatThis week Erin, Loren, and Radha regroup for a "what did I miss" session to discuss the events of the last few weeks. Starting with the bizarre coup that wasn't in Venezuela, the ladies go on to talk about the Iran not-so-snap-back sanctions — including the Babysitter's Club analogy that you’ll need in order to understand why everyone is so annoyed — and the potentially pending restart of the China trade war. They then turn to the dwindling number of inspector generals and remind everyone why process is their valentine. - I Do My Hair Toss, Check My EmailsThis week the ladies are back with a normal-ish episode, complete with special guest Nora Bensahel! She helps them dive deep on COVID-19 impacts on the defense budget. From there, they explore possible changes to the “global order,” Loren offers a tutorial on Hungary and Israel, and Radha schools us on trade issues. - Don't Ask, Don't GetThis week Erin, Loren, and Radha reunite after a midwinter break to talk pandemics. They then turn to the Afghanistan “peace” deal, Israeli elections (third time’s the charm?), and recent developments in Syria. As always, there’s plenty of White House mayhem with a new chief of staff, and vacancies as far as the eye can see in Pentagon civilian leadership.
