- Episode 38: Cruise Ship CrisesThe pursuit of relaxation has taken people to many different places in life. And inspired them to do many different things. But one in particular always comes to mind - cruises. On cruises, you can literally disconnect from the rest of society. Drifting off to places far from anyone else in the world. So it’s only natural that we’d see TV introduce a show or two about what life is like aboard a cruise ship. Love Boat (2:13) - On a cruise ship designed for short-lived cruises, we follow the crew as they deal with passengers, tourists, and other members of the crew. It might be called the Love Boat, but not everything is sunshine and lollipops aboard this cruiseliner. Avenue 5 (38:35) - Commercialized space travel seems to become more realistic with each passing year. And with that commercialization, comes space cruises. Aboard the space cruiseliner, the Avenue 5, we meet a crew which consists of a captain who has been over-praised, an eccentric billionaire who owns the ship, and an engineer who lacks any sort of confidence. - Episode 37: Into the UnknownThroughout the world, everyone is really after the same thing - answers. But just because we want answers, doesn’t mean we want to take the time to learn them. That’s why we enjoy it when other people do it for us, then explain things to us in fun and exciting ways such as videos, podcasts, or even television. The search for answers is what inspired us to research these two shows, In Search Of… and Drunk History. In Search Of… (1:58) - Host Leonard Nimoy brings in the best of the best as he attempts to delve into some of science’s greatest mysteries in the search for answers. Drunk History (35:46) - Sure, when you’re learning about history in school, it’s boring and bland. So what better way to spice things up than by hearing it from a comedian who’s absolutely hammered and watching other comedians reenact it exactly as its described. - Back to the Pilot Feb 23 · 1h 21m Episode 36: Clean. Confident. Criminal.Crime shows are often about catching the criminals. And that makes sense - audiences want to tune in to watch the good guys take down the bad guys. But what if it was flipped? Now you’re rooting for the criminals to get away with it, and go on with their lives, committing whatever crime they please next. In this episode, we learn the backstories of a couple of these shows, Spotless and Sneaky Pete. Spotless (1:58) - Though he may not be a shining member of society, Jean typically follows the rules and goes by the book. Especially during his day job as a crime scene cleaner where attention to detail and legality are both large necessity. But when his neer-do-well brother shows up with a dead body asking for help, Jean can’t turn him down. And when things go wrong, Jean must now do some “dirty” cleaning work or else he’ll be turned in and framed. Sneaky Pete (39:06) - Freshly out of Prison, confidence man, Marius, is being hunted by a man he tricked from his past. To hide out, he steals the identity and life of his old prison cellmate, Pete. But now it seems he’s gotten caught up in a not-much-better position as he finds himself a part of the family business of bail bonds, tracking down criminals not unlike himself. - Episode 35: Post-ApocalypticRecently, there seems to have been a lot of conversation around “The Apocalypse.” But not everyone expects the same apocalypse. Sometimes it’s a giant meteor, other times it’s an uncountable number of natural disasters. But one that seems to garner the most intrigue is zombies. And whether they’re undead, fungal, brain-hungry, bloodthirsty, fast, or slow - zombies are often a result, or reason, behind an apocalypse. So it’s only natural that many movies, shows, games, and comics have stories about zombies, including these two shows, The Last of Us and The Walking Dead. The Last of Us (2:31) - When an unknown fungal infection causes some people to begin eating others, Joel, his daughter Sarah, and his brother Tommy, try to get as far away as possible. But all the chaos of an ensuing pandemic leads to Sarah being shot and Tommy and Joel being separated. 20 years later, the world has had to adapt to life with this fungal virus. And now, a mysterious young girl who seems to be immune to the virus may be humanity’s last hope. The Walking Dead (43:18) - Rick Grimes is just a deputy sheriff doing his job until he gets into a bad accident. Fading in and out of the ensuing coma, he sees some of his friends and loved ones coming to visit. That is, until he wakes up, and there doesn’t seem to be anyone around. A little investigating proves this to be the case, but something else still seems off. Finally finding some other people to talk to, Rick quickly learns the unfortunate fate that has befallen humanity and must now learn to survive in an entirely new society. - Episode 34: Heart of the Cards, I Choose You!Most of us are probably not into anime, but anime has and always will be an important Japanese export. Although, for many people, some of their favorite cartoons were originally Japanese anime which were dubbed in English. That’s why we’re here to talk about two of the most popular English-dubbed animes of all time - Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! Pokémon (1:53) - In a world where people live alongside wonderful creatures known as Pokémon, children will often set out on their to adventure with their very own. And when Ash turns 10, he can finally get his own Pokémon, Pikachu! Although, it will take some time and effort for Ash to train his new best friend. Yu-Gi-Oh! (37:44) - Playing cards is always a great way to pass some time, especially with close friends. But when Yugi’s classmate, Kaiba, kidnaps his grandfather, the stakes become much higher now that he is face-to-face with giant duel monsters. - Episode 33: A Regular EpisodeThis podcast is really anything but regular. So it’s a wonder it took us so long to do an episode about two shows that as far from regular as possible - Regular Show & Courage the Cowardly Dog. Granted, our podcast is much less horrific. Regular Show (1:57) - Two young guys who just got a job with no work experience sounds like it might be the basis of a really boring show. And you’d be right…if it weren’t for the constant interruptions by supernatural forces. But when all is said and done, the park maintenance job is really just that, and the work needs to get done one or another. Courage the Cowardly Dog (40:30) - In the middle of Nowhere, you’d think you’d be safe from just about anything but the occasional tornado. And I’m sure that’s what Courage thought. At least until his home and his owners began being threatened by some of the most horrific beings and creatures he could think of. But a dog’s love goes beyond that fear (usually) and Courage always finds a way to save the day. - Episode 32: Love is In The AirNothing like a couple classic sitcoms to really make you appreciate the origins of the genre. With two shows that really set a precedent, we were impressed and amazed to discover how much they actually set the tone for future shows of a similar style. The Brady Bunch (1:56) - When a single mother with three daughters meets a single father with three sons, the resulting life is certainly a chaotic one. But with lots of chaos comes a whole lot more love to go around. And although the family has their share of problems, it’s the love they all feel for one another that really brings them together. I Love Lucy (46:19) - Lucy is always looking for ways to make life more interesting, especially involving her husband Ricky and their friends, Louise and Fred. Whether it’s trying to trick the boys into taking them out to a club or finding themselves in increasingly stressful situations, there’s never a dull moment in their lives. - Episode 31: Space Cowboys & AliensScience Fiction often stretches itself to capture a wide range of possibility. Truly a genre that can mold itself to please any number of fans. So why would some sci-fi titles perform well while others fail? That’s a question we’re hoping to answer looking at Doctor Who and Firefly. Doctor Who (02:15) - This show really puts the fiction in science fiction. A Time Machine shaped like a phone booth; A strange man from an unknown place; and teachers that stalk their students. Who wouldn’t want to tune in to that? Firefly (36:59) - If anything, space should be more like a western. With a vast expanse of lawless lands and criminals, what else would come of it but outlaws and watering holes? Unfortunately, that didn’t quite work out for the creators of Firefly only lasting a single season. - Back to the Pilot Nov 17 · 1h 47m Episode 30: Through Thick And Thin And Blood And BankruptcyFamily time is important. It connects us with the people who know us the best in this world. And when life seems to change all around you, sometimes family is the only thing to really count on. Of course, with the families in Schitt’s Creek and Santa Clarita Diet, there weren’t many other options. Santa Clarita Diet (5:38) - The last thing to expect in the beautiful suburban town of Santa Clarita is any kind of undead epidemic. But when local real estate agent, Sheila Hammond seemingly pukes herself to death, she ends up craving nothing but human flesh. Now her loving husband, Joel, and her daughter Abby must help her maintain the visage of a normal life whilst trying to hide the truth about her new “condition.” Schitt’s Creek (54:17) - The Rose family empire has come crashing down. And now they’re only remaining asset - a town called Schitt’s Creek they bought as a joke - is where they must start their new lives. - Episode 29: The Chase and Chloe Power Hour...and 20 MinutesThe early 2000s were the golden ages of Saturday morning cartoons for some of us. And when we think of early 2000s cartoons, there are certainly a lot of memorable ones. But on this episode, we focused on two that really caught our attention with their “Power Hour” crossovers - The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius & The Fairly Odd Parents. The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius (2:17) - As kids, many people always wondered what it would be like to invent a rocket ship, or fly to school on a jetpack, or even automate our morning routine. Well, the imagination is simply the beginning for kid genius, Jimmy Neutron. As he has both the innovation and the intelligence to think his way out of any situation. Though his inventions likely got him into that situation in the first place. How about fairies that grant your every wish? That’s where Timmy Turner comes to mind. With the help of his fairy god parents, Cosmo and Wanda, Timmy can wish for just about anything he wants, as long as it’s allowed by ‘Da Rules’. But still, what more could you ask for than being able to wish for a giant chocolate shake, or just the coolest new video game in town. Turns out, random wishing comes with a few consequences, luckily your god parents are always there to wish those consequences away…right? - Episode 28: Live Studio RecordingWe’ve all watched TV before - it’s become one of life’s simple pleasures and laziest pastimes. And whether you’re sitting down to watch the newest episode of your favorite show, or tuning into the most recent breaking news, you’ve probably wondered what it’s like behind the scenes. Well they may not be 100% accurate, but 30 Rock and Great News are both here to give you a little comedic glimpse into the lives of the writers and producers of TV. Great News (02:52) - Behind every great news network, is a great news anchor. And behind every great news anchor, is a great news producer. And then behind that news producer, is her mom who came out of retirement to work as a news intern. Not only does Katie have to deal with an eccentric, egotist news anchor and a somewhat terse and unforgiving boss, now she has to deal with her mom working by her side every day. 30 Rock (30:44) - It’s your favorite day of the week and you’ve gotten all excited to watch your favorite live comedy sketch show - The Girlie Show! But when it comes to live sketch comedy, there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes than you may think. With a new network exec to impress, and a new unhinged co-star on her show, head writer, Liz Lemon, has a lot on her plate. But she’s not one to back down from a challenge. - Episode 27: Comedy First, Law Enforcement LaterWe’re back for season 3 of Back to the Pilot! And to kick us off this season, we’re heading downtown with a couple cop comedies. Brooklyn 99 (3:44) - With a new police captain joining the 99th precinct, Detective Jake Peralta must become something he’s never been before - mature. But he certainly won’t change over night, and the new captain must also learn how to best guide Peralta through this new chapter of both of their lives. Reno 911! (37:59) - Deep in the heart of Reno, NV there’s a sheriff’s office unlike any other. Where other sheriff’s departments might hold debriefings, the Reno office plan’s parties and talks gossip. But of course the the sheriffs aren’t the only oddity of Reno - the residents don’t always seem to be very normal themselves as these sheriffs seem to find themselves involved with increasingly outrageous shenanigans with every 9-1-1 call they take. - Back to the Pilot Apr 14 · 1h 15m Episode 25: Stuck in the MiddleLife isn't always easy for those in the lower middle class. But when push comes to shove, those are the people that find a way to enjoy the little things. And in some of life's most difficult challenges, it's important to understand that anything is possible with the help of our friends and family. The Middle (1:26) - Nothing gets more 'middle' than a middle-class family living in the middle-west of the United States and getting stranded in the middle of nowhere. The Heck family consists of a mother, her husband, and their three kids all living life to the fullest in Orson, Indiana. It may not be the most glamorous life, but heck if they're gonna let life keep them down. Malcom in the Middle (29:49) - Okay, I lied. It does get more 'middle'. Like, being the middle of three brothers. It's a brother-eat-brother world in Malcom's house, so every moment counts. And whether it's breakfast or watching TV, you have to fight for every square inch of space. So it's no wonder he just wants to live a normal life at school. Too bad he's a bit too smart for that. - Episode 24: Pilots and Pilot AccessoriesWhether you prefer the comfort of a classic bathroom joke, or you prefer your humor to be a little more subtle, this episode will appeal to you. Beavis and Butt-Head and King of the Hill are two classic adult animations which each drew large audiences during their time on air and even well after they left television. Beavis and Butt-Head (3:55) - Beavis and Butt-Head are just two kids who are always looking for their next laugh. And whether it's Frog Baseball or donating blood, they always find themselves having a pretty good time. They may not be the most mature, but when they're laughing, nothing else matters. King of the Hill (25:50) - Living in Arlen, Texas is not all it's cracked up to be. Sometimes it's too hot outside, sometimes you have car troubles, oh and sometimes you get Child Protective Services mistakenly called on you. And although he has a bit of an attitude, Hank Hill will always do what's best for his family and (to an extent) his friends. - Episode 23: Oldies but GoodiesTelevision has been a large part of our lives for so long that it’s sometimes crazy to think that it was brand new for some people at one point. So today, we’re talking about a couple shows that really set a precedent for what we see on TV today! The Bob Newhart Show (1:17) - When psychologist Dr. Bob Hartley finds out his wife fits right in with his Fear of Flying group, he tries to convince her to take a flight with the group to face that fear head-on. But facing your fears isn't always as easy as some say and Dr. Hartley is soon to find that out the hard way. The Honeymooners (20:41) - Back in the days of black and white television, it was rare for anyone to own a TV, not to mention a couple who's already struggling financially. But when Ralph's wife Alice learns that their upstairs neighbors are already getting their second, she tries to convince him to buy one. When he decides to split one with his neighbor, he soon finds that sharing the cost of a television set can lead to some interesting antics. - Episode 22: The Mind Of A CriminalTo catch a criminal, sometimes the best thing to do is to think like one. After all, what better way to really understand how they think and predict their next move? Luckily for you, tonight, we're the ones doing the thinking, so you can sit back and relax as we take you Back to the Pilot. Dexter (2:12) - What better way to get into the mind of a serial killer than by becoming one. Even though he has a lust to kill, Dexter channels that passion towards only the worst of the worst - preserving whatever sanity he might have left. Using his own insights and experiences, he helps the Miami PD to track down some of the worst criminals in the city. Criminal Minds (34:32) - Thinking like a criminal isn't easy, but after years of training and experience, the members of the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit certainly make it seem that way. When a serial killer needs to be caught, it's up to this group of the country's best and brightest to get into their mind and track them down before they kill again. - Episode 21: It Runs In The FamilyFamily is a concept that seems to show up a lot on our podcast. And whether it's found families, loving families, or in today's case, chaotic families, it seems to always play an important role in these kinds of shows. So today we brought along a special guest and family member to get a better understanding of the familial chaos that is Arrested Development and Modern Family. Arrested Development (05:35) - As the only capable member of his family, Michael Bluth is expecting a huge promotion to come his way at his family's company. Modern Family (34:14) - Time spent with extended family can be filled with fun and excitement. But it can also be filled with chaos. - Episode 20: Throwback ThursdayNostalgia for the 90s has been creeping up a lot lately with so many reboots and remakes going around. So we're here to take you back to our own childhoods to relive some of the good ol' days. First, we're covering the adventurous antics of the tiny tots known as the Rugrats. Then, we head out to the cul-de-sac to hang with the radically righteous dudes and dudettes of Rocket Power. Rocket Power (40:00) - Living near the beach as a kid means you've got a lot of different sports to choose from growing up. But why choose one when you can choose them all. - Back to the Pilot Jan 13 · 1h 1m Episode 19: The Cougar CommunityIn this episode we're headed back to a time in our lives when things weren't quite so clear and a lot of guess work was involved. However, that time varies depending on our situation. For some, it was college, and the difficulties of balancing student life with personal life, the two of which often crossing over. For others, it was dating, and never knowing if what you're doing is really working to help you find a new relationship. Either way, Community and Cougar Town find some funny ways to point out the awkwardness of those situations. Community (1:38) - Community colleges are everywhere. And many of them include similar types of people. And this show truly digs into that stereotype to find some of the funniest ways to explore a day in the life of a community college student. Cougar Town (33:56) - Recently divorced or newly single. They're really one and the same. But you could either spend your time feeling bad for yourself, or listen to the advice of your young single friend and sleep with the first guy that you lay your eyes on! - Episode 18: Back In My Day...Writing for a specific time period is certainly no easy task. Between the outfits, dialogue, and socioeconomic changes, the feat seems almost impossible. But in this episode, we take a look at two shows that managed to succeed in the face of that adversity. Mad Men (1:26) - In the golden age of advertising, it takes the mind a true Mad Man to come up with the best ads for his clients, and Don Draper is the perfect example. In the face of smoking being proven as unhealthy, it's up to him to find a new angle for the industry. And just as it seems to be over, he blows his clients' minds once again. Downton Abbey (40:37) - In the English countryside we find a wealthy family and their manor. All seems to be going perfectly for them until the sinking of the Titanic causes a shake up that would change their lives forever. Now they must find a way to move past this tragedy all while dealing with the repercussions. - Episode 17: Cheers to That 70s Show!Whether it's the friends you grew up with or those you made later in life, we all have close friends who are practically family. And in this episode those are the exact relationships we're discussing with Cheers and That '70s Show. Cheers (1:34) - A newly engaged couple walks into a bar. No, that isn't the start of your new favorite joke, it just so happens to be the first scene of the pilot episode of Cheers. After a day full of what can only be described as a roller coaster of emotions, Diane eventually finds herself at Cheers, a local Boston bar, surrounded by new friends on the first day of the rest of her life. That '70s Show (40:35) - Growing up in Pointe Place, Wisconsin doesn't offer much in the form of entertainment. But with some close friends, a new car, and a little bit of weed, anything is possible. In That '70s Show, we learn that fun isn't always about what you do, but who you do it with. - Episode 16: To Boldly Go Where No Podcast Has Gone BeforeSpace. Commonly known as "the final frontier". But sometime in the future, who's to say it won't be brimming with life. In this episode, we explore two shows that focus on just that concept - what life could look like once space travel becomes commonplace. Star Trek: The Original Series (2:04) - In the 23rd century, life isn't too different from how it is now. You get up, eat breakfast, go to work, spend time with friends, etc. Oh, but you do that all on a space ship while traveling to and from planets across the galaxy and even interact with the occasional hostile alien species. Star Trek was the first show of its kind and inspired future showrunners and filmmakers to explore the previously unimaginable outreaches of space. The Orville (40:40) - What do you get when you cross a comedy writer with a Star Trek nerd? Seth MacFarlane. Though he wanted to take on the opportunity to write under the Star Trek name, it certainly didn't stop him from adding his own flare to the historic space opera genre. The Orville is proof of exactly that as he stars in the sweet lovechild of Star Trek and Comedy. - Episode 15: New Places and Good Girls...Or Was It The Other Way Around?In this episode it's all about Girl Power as we take a look into how Elizabeth Meriwether's New Girl and Michael Schur's The Good Place set some high bars for female-led sitcoms. The Good Place (00:47) - After her untimely demise, Eleanor Shellstrop finds herself face-to-face with some sort of "angel" and is quickly introduced to her new afterlife. But she soon discovers that she doesn't quite belong, as everyone believes her to be someone else entirely and the lying might just come back to bite her. New Girl (26:21) - Once she learns that her (now ex) boyfriend is cheating on her, Jessica Day is forced to find herself looking for a new apartment. Despite some initial backlash, she quickly finds herself living with three guys in a loft apartment. Now with a brand new loft dynamic, the three guys learn that living with a girl has many ups and downs.
