Master Story-Telling
Just want to convey my great appreciation for these great couple of hosts, always charismatic, interested and taken by the lore of these legends but not to the point of losing reasonable doubts and expressing them. I especially love the multi-part stories like the Mothman & Skin-walker Ranch (The YETI is in a class of its own!)--just amazing! Lots of podcasts will do an episode with cursory overview, but don't know of one like this which goes neck deep into the stories --they actually read the books, do research but with no pretense --they just have the same questions we do. Also, love the special sound effects that enhance the episodes and love the way they always finish an episode!

I wanted to like it
I clicked on crop circles to check out the podcast to see if I’d like it enough to subscribe, but they spent the first ten minutes (at lease) talking about how not to skip the episode, they have so much info, etc. but never got into it - at least for ten minutes anyway. I checked out and turned on another podcast.

Tangents be damned! I love them!
Whoever complains about y’all’s tangents just don’t appreciate learning new things. Ignore the naysayers! Listening to these shows has opened my eyes and my mind to new ideas about so many things. I mean, I’ve always enjoyed a great ghost story, but what you do is SO much more. You guys are wonderful, expressive and so entertaining. The research involved is astounding! I started at the beginning just under a month ago and I’m at the story of Flight 19 right now. I haven’t found a single story I haven’t enjoyed yet. Keep up the astounding work guys!!

Five Star Podcast
Do you appreciate in-depth research, lengthy and entertaining discussions amongst friends, interesting topics that cause you to really think? Of course you do!!! Well look no further my fellow podcast listener/podcaster! This podcast has it all!!! The obvious friendship and genuine discussions are engaging and thought provoking. The research that goes into each episode is astonishing in and of itself. They do have a well run website, and offer great merchandise. Do yourself a favor and check this show out.

THOROUGH
If you like short overviews this is NOT your podcast. If you are paranormal obsessed and want every little detail, you’ll be in familiar company. I’m late to the party; it will take me FOREVER to catch up. I really like these guys. They’re fair and nonjudgmental to people who have had experiences. I’ve finally listened to stories from people who have had strange experiences since childhood. Mine started around age five. I’ve been reading and watching horror and cryptozoology and UFO and ghost info ever since. People can be unkind to people like me. So it’s really nice to find a little company. Love you guys. Please keep it up. I just found you!! Spooky🦇

Good yet could be cut down.
Man this has been a whirlwind of a podcast for me. Originally (a couple years ago) I remember stumbling on it, disliking it based off the long opening of just what seemed like just dronning on and on without even getting on a topic after X amount of time. Then I stumbled on it again(after forgetting the original listening experience) and picking an episode that I really enjoyed. And really liking it. Binging on it then rediscovering my review, and feeling embarrassed. Now fast forward a couple years and I’m really torn on where I sit with the podcast. Scott and Forest do some really phenomenal research. But over the last couple of years the off topic bantering has become ridiculous, and I notice how there There seems to be a lot of repitition. I think one episode I honestly had to double check because I thought I accidentally rewound it, but nope. So I’d love to see it edited down a bit, or maybe an do an outline? Maybe they do but they roll off of it? Like the recaps in the episodes of earlier topics in the same episode, are not needed. It’s also is tough because most topics are presented in two to three parts, each at least an hour and a half long, sometimes 3. It’s produced biweekly so if it’s a topic I’m not to into and can’t get into, it could end up being a month and a half of zero content. And It’s tough for me to dive into a topic I’m not into, being anywhere from 3-7 hours with maybe an hour of meat scattered throughout 6 hours. I do try, but quickly loose interest, Especially on top of the bantering, repetition, and just trailing off. The last episode I was really digging into, which was of Frederick Valentich, which was back in January of 2020(almost a year ago). There are a lot of good episodes and great info. But lately it’s just been off for me. Maybe I used to be able to pick and choose which ones o want to listen to. And as ive caught up I can’t anymore. Take care and good luck!

Great but in need of focus
This podcast can be great at times, interesting and scary in equal measures. But the hosts just drone ON AND ON, most of the time about nothing in particular or something way off topic. Usually about 1/4 of the podcast is solid content — the rest is blather. Also doing multi part episodes is for the most part unnecessary — it’s like in school when you had to watch a ten hour mini series on the civil war. Very boring, very unnecessary. Almost all topics could be boiled down to one episode if focused. Good podcast if you don’t mind haha to hit the forward button every 30 seconds. So rambling. So bumbling. If you wanna listen to a 3 hour podcast full of 40 minutes of content, this is for you.

Lost the Plot with Missing 411 Conspiracy
I’ve lost respect for this podcast. They’re insisting it’s important to show “both sides of the story” when it’s pretty clear that one side is a conspiracy monger who’s exploiting missing persons cases and antigovernment sentiment for filthy lucre. They don’t even really support the missing 411 conspiracy, but that’s not the point. The point is that they’ve abandon credibility for a juicy story at a time when that sort of behavior is destroying our government and society. I’ve enjoyed this podcast for years but this is not the intense research and thoughtful discussion I cam for.

So much blah blah blah blah blah
In the missing 411 episode, which an “overwhelming majority” of the audience is already familiar with, you will learn the following before a single case is mentioned in the 40 MINUTE preamble: - Driving is dangerous and people aren’t careful enough driving - You should be vigilant in the woods *and* in the city (nice) - Authors don’t make a lot of money, but we don’t know if this guy does on his books, but maybe he doesn’t, but we don’t know - Maybe the Eastern and Western 411 books were originally one book, or maybe they were two, we don’t know - Astonishing Legends is a paranormal podcast so the authors will bring a paranormal view to analyzing this book (wow had no idea) - David Paulides’ LinkedIn profile summary, including that he was a “senior tech executive” - Missing 411 the film was completed in July 2016 and “more details will follow on film distribution” (great?) - Hello Fresh meals are delicious and healthy, cheaper than takeout and more varied too! - Quip mouthwash has a fancy looking dispenser! - Mr. Paulides in writing his books is documenting cases (didn’t realize) I wanted to introduce someone I know to this topic and by the time we got to any meat we were so bored it fell flat. I know this meandering quality is a signature characteristic of the podcast, and that the podcast is successful - that doesn’t make it immune from criticism

Disappointed
Longtime listener and really disappointed with the quality of storytelling lately. None of the recent topics were all that interesting, and the choice of subjects seems lazy and uninspired (Listener stories?… really?). I’m just looking for a nice spooky topic that you can squeeze several episodes out of, keep the contemporary stuff to the junk drawer maybe?

Passion is there, but research is lacking
I really wanted to like this podcast, but the quality of research made unsubscribe. That is not to say that these individuals do not research their material, because they do. However, they only base their research from one point of research. In the Mothman series, they only speak about John Keel’s book on the subject…but they do not mention that other researchers like Dr. Emily Zarka has termed this book limiting regarding Keel’s lack of focus on the actual people in the community. Also, during the Skinwalker Ranch episode the hosts mention that there are “skinwalkers in other cultures”…this is not true. There are other supernatural beings that have transformative powers prompted by immoral acts, but skinwalkers are unique to the Native Americans of the southwest in North America. The passion for the subject matter is certainly there and I know there is no malice, but because of the two mentioned reasons above, in addition to others is the reason that I had to give three stars.

This used to be a favorite
But good heavens, it’s now 1 1/4 of rambling 10 mins of story and another repeating the story three times and bringing up something only to put it off for 3 weeks. I just can’t anymore. If they would only edit the shows to be 1 1/2 hours they could have a new one up every week and not have these long dark periods. There’s sometimes 3 weeks between shows and the the first 30 mins is reminding us of what they talked about last time. Now they’ve added a Patreon so we have to pay to get weekly shows.

Omg, just get to the point.
I’m 20 minutes in to the first episode and they haven’t started the actual story yet. He just explained what a fax is, for goodness sake, which has no importance to the story. The topic sounds really interesting but I will be 100 before they tell it. Too bad, I really wanted to hear what this topic is about but I’m done. They just like to hear themselves talk. Imagine if they had to make a 911 call. Sheesh!

Fun podcast but I can’t keep listening weekly because they constantly stop the show to talk about their views on how the opinions of scientists and non scientists should all be listened to. It’s getting to a point I’m very worried they’re going to repeat anti-science rhetoric.

It’s Nice
I’ve enjoyed this podcast! It covers some interesting topics and I’ve listened to it for a while now. I do agree with other listeners that often I have a hard time focusing with how much they get off topic. I find myself selecting random episodes instead of listening to them all. I will admit, sometimes it gets so off topic I can’t finish an episode. However, that makes it a good podcast for when I’m listening to something while I’m at work! My work flip flops between very busy and very slow. I like that I can miss a minute or two of what they’re saying and not be totally lost on the subject. They both seem nice and when they are on topic they seem to do really good research! I still find a lot of fun episodes and think some people are being a bit harsh in the comments. I’d say start with the episodes that have topics you like and then check out the rest of the podcast. It’s a chill time!

Can’t Get Enough of Astonishing Legends
What do you get when you take when all areas of the paranormal, toss them into a blender and hit puree? Yes you get a mess…er no....you get Astonishing Legends. Frankly, it is your one-step shop to find conversations on all things paranormal. Scott, Forrest and company will transport you to all realms of possibility. Big Foot you say - check out the 6 part series (EP 139 - 144). Perhaps you like a little haunting action - then I recommend The Sallie House series (EP 123-126). The point is, the catalogue is huge and you will spend plenty of time getting your paranormal fix. Keep up the fine work AL Crew

Fun
They have really ineresting stories and usually pretty fun though lately they’ve gone down hill. Forrest's voice sometimes gets SOOOOO LOW you can't hear what he's saying and I have to crank up the volume. Also, DO NOT apply to the ARC. Long time listener here. To put it plainly: Scott and Forrest are the best at pulling apart every crazy thing you’ve ever heard of. I had only half-heartedly listened to the show until the Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot episodes. Since then I haven’t missed a show. If you just want to get your feet wet, maybe start with the recent episodes of the real story behind the Exorcist. Spectacular content, you won’t find a better audio experience. A Hidden Treasure -LOVE IT
I fortuitously stumbled upon this podcast one dayand have not regretted it. I've always been interested in the unexplained, fringy topics, with Destination Truth and Unsolved Mysteries as some of my favorite shows. Needless to say, it is hard to find TV shows and podcasts that can discuss these things with any amount of ingenuity. Astonishing Legends satisfies all the right things in a podcast. There is a wealth of information - which I personally LOVE, in the past I have complained that some documentaries DIDN'T have enough information and I wanted more. The conversation/story-telling style is surprisingly addicting and I find I love the random tangents Scott and Forrest go on at times. I cannot stress how much I enjoy this podcast. I'm a picky person overall, and I have not only subscribed, I have listened to all the previous podcasts and am impatiently waiting for more to come. I recommend to anyone who loves stories, mysteries, thrillers, and strange happenings.

Endless Meandering
This show has always been full of digressions, but lately this tendency has become unbearable. In the most recent episode, the hosts spent the first twenty minutes dancing around the topic, and read the definition of the HIPPA law direct from a Federal government website. This does not make for enjoyable listening.

It's alright
Although they cover interesting topics, like many other reviews here state, they DRAG ON so much. I don't mind banter, but they'll spend 20+ minutes of an episode rehashing the previous episode, or even something said earlier in the episode, or going on unrelated tangents. I also find it a bit gross that the frequently defend "homeopathy" and related topics -- all the while admitting they have no idea what they're talking about and aren't qualified to say anything on it. Then don't! You don't know anything about medical topics - stay in your lane as entertainers and don't give time in the spotlight to "treatments" that freqently lead to people being manipulated out of their money, delaying medical treatment, or even dying.

I literally have deja vu listening to each episode as their conversations are remarkably like those I had with my best friend as a kid. There references to In Search Of, Star Trek and other fantastic shows and movies are all woven skillfully into a fantastic and in-depth analysis that make this podcast a perfect blend of casual conversation and serious scientific analysis. I cannot recommend this show enough. I have grown weary of the cursory analysis of other podcasts.

Overly dramatized and overly stretched content.
I listened to AL for a while. I mostly enjoyed it but it got to a point where they would take a topic that could easily be covered in an hour or two and stretch it out over days.....and days.....and days. Prime example was the Sallie House episode. Yeah there was a disturbing evp....but they probably spent an hour warning you about said evp before playing it. Building it up and it got to a point where it was just ridiculous. The sallie house episode was what finally made me jump ship. The four episodes ended up being over THIRTEEN HOURS....then what. A six part series on the Bigfoot film? The content is enough on its own. You don’t have to milk it to stretch it out.

Scattered and difficult to follow
These guys go off on to too many pointless boring tangents that have zero to do with the main story. They also talk over and interrupt each other with their tangents which makes it even more difficult to follow. Then once you think you’ve figured out a meaningful connection to the main story, they go down another tangent. Or play a commercial. Just seems like a lame way to drag things out.

3 hrs of Ads, 15 mins of Stories
I listened back in the day...gave it another try this evening, and was quickly reminded why I unsubscribed. Dear God this show has become a shameless cash grab. Took 45 mins listening to these guys yakking back and forth before they started with the story - dragging it out so they can throw in as many ads as possible...They finally get going for a couple minutes, then PSYCH - time for commercials! Then - you guessed it - MORE POINTLESS BANTER! If they were even remotely funny, or interesting, that'd be one thing, but sheesh! And all the disclaimers - they have zero courage and are desperate to avoid offending anyone, or against incurring any sort of litigation...to the point of being ridiculous with all of their warnings and disavowals of responsibility. They come off as being spineless. Guys - grow a pair. And cut to the dang chase. Good luck going forward, but if you continue this way, you're going to run a once-great show into the ground. Is it too late for you to course correct?

Used to be my favorite, not really worth listening anymore
This used to be a great show covering interesting topics in-depth. I keep hoping for them to release more episodes about a new topic. But it feels like years since they’ve done an episode that isn’t essentially a book review or an interview with the same old people again and again. What a disappointment, I might as well give up listening.

Binging on it then rediscovering my review and feeling embarrassed. Now fast forward a couple years and I’m really torn on where I sit with the podcast. Scott and Forest do some really phenomenal research. If it’s a topic Im really interested in, I don’t mind the bantering and can kind of roll with it. If it’s a topic I’m not that into. It gets tough to even get into, and then ends up feeling totally drawn out. And I notice how there There seems to be a lot of repitition. I think one episode I honestly had to double check because I thought I accidentally rewound it, but nope. So I’d love to see it edited down a bit, or maybe an outline? Maybe they do but they roll off of it? Like the recaps in the episodes of earlier topics in the same episode, are not needed. It’s also is tough because most topics are presented in two to three parts, each at least an hour and a half long, sometimes 3. It’s produced biweekly so if it’s a topic I’m not to into and can’t get into, it could end up being a month and a half of zero content. And It’s tough for me to dive into a topic I’m not into being anywhere from 3-7 hours. And as ive caught up I can’t anymore? Just some constructive(hopefully positive) criticism. Take care and good luck!

Longtime listener
Astonishing Legends and the rambling, talkative, “buddy” hosts have been entertaining me for years. They remind me of more earnest Click and Clack the Tappert Brothers, sub scary and spiritual stuff for cars. I didn’t care about cars, but Click and Clack were too fun not to listen. Same here, with the bonus that Scott and Forrest can make care about anything. I always push play - they’ll hook my interest in whatever random thing. I’ve even cared about what airplane noise they say is in the background of their ad-hoc recording studio ;) Special shout out to Forrest: Forrest’s openings are awesome - always have been worth listening to twice or three times. His voice and way of speaking reminds me so much of my brother - earnest, thoughtful, fun, definitely off-beat in the best way. I love the rambling style, as I tend my kids or do housework or renovations, I want someone jabbering about an interesting topic that THEY clearly find interesting, but where I can miss a few words here or there. They’ll mention it again so I’m not on edge if someone interrupts. It’s peaceful, in a Saturday afternoon on the porch kind of way. Also, the theme music is my ringtone. Idk why that is relevant, just that’s how special this little gem has become to me. This was actually the first podcast I ever got into. I was reading about Mothman and listened to AL’s take on it...and got totally hooked. I’ve been listening since 2017, not at a steady pace, but that’s been fine with me. I’ll get into political podcasts or history podcasts for a few seasons, then binge listen to a whole series - a topic and its sequels. It’s therapeutic, I suppose. Never change, Scott and Forrest!

Great show, keep up the great work!
I’ve been listening since the release of Ep. 25: Kidnapped by Bigfoot - The Albert Ostman Story. Needless to say, I was hooked and immediately went back and listened to all the episodes before and since. I love that the show continues to grow and evolve, and that the cast and crew deliver such great content every time. There’s a good diversity of stories covering a variety of topics from Bigfoot to UFOs, Amelia Earhart to Skinwalker Ranch, pirates, the Knights Templar, and more. I’ve never been so entertained, scared, and intrigued in equal measures. This is my go-to podcast that I have to listen to as soon as each new episode airs. My best to Scott and Forrest, Tess and Sarah, and Ryan for their work delivering each episode, plus the Astonishing Research Corps. without whose work the show wouldn’t have the depth and breadth of knowledge we’ve all come to know and love. An additional special thanks goes out to my favorite guest host Rich Hatem (every episode with him is a gem). Give it a listen! Well worth it!

Siggggghhhh.
I used to be a big fan of this podcast… the level of research completed by the hosts and the ARC is very much appreciated, and they have chosen some very fun subjects over the years. But I agree with everyone who says the quality is decreasing over time. I literally cannot bear the amount of time they now waste with unnecessary filler and redundancy. The minute I hear Forrest say for the five billionth time “This reminds me of that episode…” I end up turning the volume completely down till I think the tangent may be over. References to television episodes and movies add absolutely no value to the subject matter. And, oh my god, Scott, PLEASE stop repeating the same things over and over (and over) again. You don’t need to keep telling us “we’ll talk about this later in the show.” If you just cut out the number of times you say that, we’d already BE at the part where you’re telling us about it. (And telling us Mary Lurancy Vennem is called “Rancy” just once would have been a-okay. Your listeners are smart, and can keep up!) The episodes from before 2020 are well worth the listen, and I would absolutely recommend them. But I think I’m done from here on out.

Conjuring
Hi guys. I was born and raised in RI, not far from the “Conjuring house”. I have to make one correction (check Andrea Perron’s interviews on YouTube). You mispronounced the family name throughout the two podcast episodes. It was so distracting! The name “Perron” is pronounced “Perrin”, not “Perrown”. I’m surprised that neither of you caught the correct pronunciation in your research.

Frustratingly Unorganized
I have really tied to listen. Interesting topics, great production, but the constant rabbit trails are annoying. A 90 min podcast may only talk about the promoted topic half the time or less. So disorganized that it doesn’t compel one to listen more.

Used to love, now not so much.
It’s pretty astonishing how bad this show has gotten. Miss the old days when the guys actually cared about the quality of the content they put out. Now it’s just a pure lazy money grab. Edit: MORE Sallie House content?! Good god, guys. It’s comical at this point. Seriously feel like that series was the beginning of the end for AL. Really changed the dynamic of the show. It’s a shame. This podcast really hasn’t aged well. The guys may think they’ve progressed as podcast hosts but the ‘better fueled’ that their operation has become, I actually think has resulted in the actual quality of the show decreasing significantly. What started out as a show about topics of legends and analysis and skepticism has rapidly moved towards a show on full-on belief and disregarding anything even slightly related to skepticism. The increased number of 3-4 part stories where each episode is 3 hours is just too much. A lot of these topics don’t require a dissection of that magnitude. Getting bogged down in the minutia has not been a good thing for this podcast. And the interviews of people have become a crutch and, in my opinion, don’t increase the overall quality of the shows. The people may have good information but they haven’t been particularly good to listen to. Clips and summaries of the interviews would be much more preferred over hearing hour upon hour of people who aren’t that interesting. Also...I wish they’d stop with the promotion of their secondary show, The Midnight Library. That show is hot garbage and should be abandoned as a premise.

Deeply Ablist
This show has had a few episodes that had a few ableist comments but this most recent one had some horrible views on autism that are very disturbing. They have a huge audience & chose to continue dehumanizing people with ASD or other disabilities. It’s extremely important to talk about the past but it’s not okay to excuse it or make light of it which they did. The research is great but I can’t support this podcast anymore.

Good
I like the show and the guys. I love the subjects discussed and how well researched it is. I only give it 3 stars because of how often they stray off topic. I would also enjoy if they spent less time explaining “it’s just a show, please don’t let this subject offend you.” to such extremes after it’s taking so long to get started already. For the moments they are on topic, it’s great content. The Laughing Indian in the earlier episodes is one of my favorites. I think the earliest are some of their best.

Generally a good listen
The hosts generally believe everything to some degree and are fond - especially of late - of dismissing most doubt as ‘lazy skepticism.’ If you incline to skepticism, you will frequently be enraged at how they present, analyze, and arrive at conclusions. But if you believe or - like me - are a skeptic who can nevertheless enjoy the game of it then you’ll usually be fine.

Great Deep-Dive show
4.5 stars! Firstly, I should say that I really enjoy the hosts and their chosen subject matter. They are intelligent, witty and engaging in their dialogue and usually have very well-done interviews to go along with their topic. I should say also, they have a very fun online social media following and the groups for this podcast are very enjoyable in and of themselves. At this point (assuming you’ve read this far), you may be wondering, why 4 stars then? The primary reason for not giving 5 stars is that I couldn’t give 4.5 stars which is probably more accurate for me. The reasoning behind this is that if you tend to be more distractable like myself, you may at times struggle a bit with this podcast. The vast majority of the time they are on topic but they do tend to follow a fair amount of rabbit holes to go down and sometimes I lose track of what’s being discussed or maybe more so how it relates to the topic. The podcasts can be a bit long and while it certainly is appreciated to have that amount of info sifted through, it can bounce around a fair amount in that time. More recently, on the episode regarding historical evidence for sasquatch, the topic by and large was consistent but it seemed there wasn’t a consistent direction they were heading, more like one person sharing an idea, followed by discussion on that for the next 10 minutes, and this cycle being repeated. It was hard for me to stay with the episode because one moment we’d be learning about first nation’s history of wild men and the next discussing some other unrelated historical information. Remember, by and large I have only positive things to say about this podcast and I do mean it when I say this is among the highest quality out there. I have found over time that interviewing is definitely a skill that many podcasters don’t have but AL is not one of them, very professional and helpful. I would also say that if you appreciate deep-dive, info dense podcasts that are very thorough in exploring their topic, there are few, if any that can top AL in this department. While yes, at times some of the episodes can be more challenging to follow, by and large this is a very good podcast and you’d be missing out to not give them a listen. They are also highly interactive on social media and very respectful and family friendly for much of their content.

I started listening way back when, Episode 1. Just when you think there can't be any more topic the guys find terrific subjects. Their in-depth research is superb! Well-researched, fascinating, AND fun to listen to!
Scott and Forest take topics I’m not even interested in and get me dreaming of going back to school and starting a new career path in whatever the show is about that week. They find the most interesting sources and present them in a way that’s smart and creative, but not at all pretentious. I recommend this podcast to anyone interested in the unexplained or just how things work in general! Plus, they are both really knowledgeable, funny, and seem down to earth which makes them a blast to listen to.

Excellent long-form research and discussion on mysterious events and places that often get overlooked by other shows. Their work on the more well-known subjects is excellent as well—the series on the Patterson-Gimlin film is, as far as I’m concerned, mandatory listening for anyone interested in the subject of sasquatch

Going Downhill
Been a listener since the beginning. Since around 2020 I have found the shows to be tedious and hard to make it through. I’m over the constant fawning over Richard Hatem and how they think he is the Fonzi of the paranormal world. Also someone needs to tell Scott to quit constantly bringing up the Salle house incident. I will say all episodes prior to 2020 are worth the listen

One of my first favorites
One of the first shows I ever listened to, and even though my interest I the the paranormal has dropped out somewhat over the years (to the point these guys and Unexplained are pretty much the only ones I listen to now), I still think it’s pretty good. It’s been pretty cool to see how these guys have grown over the years, getting many connections with professionals (or, as professional as this industry can get), while still feeling like a whole bunch of friends just talking about weird stuff. All of the episodes are timeless; I get as much enjoyment listening to Hollywood Endings as the Phantom Horse of Greensboro. I appreciate the fact they take a even-keeled look at the paranormal, skeptical enough to not believe everything but open enough to listen, as well as doing a thorough look into every subject they cover. Yes, I do understand many of the negative reviews; the episodes are long and tend to be tangential, the add reads are long, shows that probably could’ve been just 1-2 episodes get dragged out way longer, the show can be a little corny with pronunciations, and that’s fine if you have that opinion. My main complaint is that some of the more recent topics (as of this review), have been a bit boring to me at least. I love the James Dean series, 37th Parallel, Skinwalker Ranch, Black Eyed Kids, and anything with Richard Hatem. Nain Rogue just isn’t really my taste. Also these guys do take a little while to get into the main story; a little background is good, just not 20 minutes of it. Still, I hope these guys keep on going as we come out of the pandemic.

Changed
Let me start this by saying I first got into podcasts because of these guys. They used to be all I’d listen to. Something seems to have changed, and not for the better—most episodes were self-contained, and the ones that spilled over into multiple sessions were usually large and riveting. Now…it’s become tedious. Episodes that are 2.5 hours long, seem to have 1 hour of actual content. I keep trying and I just can’t do it anymore. I’m going to give it a break and try to come back, hoping things have changed back toward how they began. Not sure if they’re just running out of topics and trying to stretch content as far as possible, but there’s got to be a better approach. Also…please stop with the cringey pronunciations of things like “Melbourne.” I realize you’re trying to effect an Aussy accent, but they don’t say “Melbun.” When foreigners mention New Jersey or Nashville, they don’t try to effect their best Jersey / Tennessee accent. It would not go over well.

Jeez, it’s not hard to do the research
I’m listening to the episode about Fritz Klenner, and it’s like, come on. There are books, movies, YouTube videos, and podcasts about the case, and it’s like, you didn’t avail yourself of any of it. You’re all, “I think he killed his family, or he had shot his kids,” (they weren’t his kids, by the way, they were his cousin’s, who was with him) and I’m like...why am I listening to someone talking about something they don’t really know about? These were real people with families who survived this nightmare. You should do the bare minimum to actually know what happened, and not treat it like some tourist attraction.

Stop repeating yourselves!
This is a good show, lots of interesting content, and far reaching information, with a wide range of topics, but it is so, so annoying how much the hosts repeat themselves! I mean, it’s one thing to recap, but they’ll say the same information like six or seven times. Also they spend too much time going into the weeds so that I frequently lose track of what the point is. I wish there was half star rating because 3 seems too low, but 4 is a bit high with my frustration with this show .

Starting to lose me
17 July 2020: This years content has been pretty disappointing thus far. There hasn’t really been any intriguing episodes since the Betz Sphere and the periodic filler episodes like the most recent interview episode with Rich Hatem (and the next one) tend to be disappointing when coming out of multiple dark weeks. 12 April 2021: Just listened to Crop Circles and was excited to finally see an interesting topic be covered, the show has been hit and miss the past couple of years. Is AL finally considering the mounting under four-star reviews from long time listeners? The housekeeping, lead in, and banter was kept to a minimum with focus on the subject. This is what I would like to see more of from you guys, I’m not trying to be overly critical, I’ve always enjoyed the banter but sometimes it’s just too much. I’ve been a listener for over four years and once could have been counted as a “legender” or “superfan” of the show. I listened to every episode, was active in the official FB group, bought merch, tried some of their sponsors wares to support the show, etcetera. Somewhere along the way the show lost its original luster with me, it went from a passion project with two friends feel to a corporate network feel. Overdone ads, variety shows, multiple interviews with the same pretentious screenwriter, dry historical topics, holiday specials, promotional events for celebrity friends, occasional social issue lectures for a show advertised as apolitical, and expansion resulting in two week waits for episodes have declined the quality of the show in my opinion. I went from “legender” to occasional listener about a year ago, I hope that will change but I’m not holding my breath. Now let’s get into the AL community. The AL FB page is advertised as a non-toxic, apolitical environment. It is anything but, there is almost a palpable air of paranormal elitism. If I were to post this review on their social media it would be pounced on by the rabid fan clique that resides there, I would be school marmed by the admins (one in particular) on how I have the choice not to listen, and the post would eventually have its comments locked or deleted. Any criticism of any aspect of the show, even constructive, or anything that may be considered right of center will get you dragged. Anything left of center will get an occasional finger wagging but often tolerated. Once it became a paranormal meme dump and I began to notice the veiled page politics, I quit interacting. You can even find this elitism in these reviews, there’s one that basically says, “If you aren’t giving this show a 5-star review, it’s just because you don’t have the intellect to follow along with Scott and Forrest”. Nope, I follow just fine, the show is just not as good as it was. Hopefully, the boys attempt to get back to their roots one of these days, until then I’m going to remain a 3-star reviewer and occasional listener.

A perfect blend of intelligent discussion and good old fashioned homespun hauntings. I love the discourse between the two hosts and their fun banter to keep the really scary things from being too scary!

Was great
I was a loyal listen from the beginning. After years of listening and years of being a pattern member, I noticed they changed. Less content and more rambling. I like long podcasts, but this is way too long. When I posted on the Facebook page about how I thought they have changed from the beginning I was attacked by EVERYONE. Including their moderators. That was what broke it for me. I miss it, but hopefully I’ll find something else like they used to be.

Seriously needs an editor, but that won’t make it less stupid.
Not only is each episode 2 1/2 to 3 hours long - and then usually part of a multi episode series - they ramble endlessly, repeating and reiterating points ad nauseam. The Patterson Gimlin film series was 6 episodes long, and 50% of it was them constantly saying “as I said” or “like we mentioned before”. And in some cases they go out of their way to make something seem weirder than it really is. In the Sam the Sandown Clown episode the children describe what is obviously a bullhorn, with a microphone attached, being used so they could hear the “clown” clearly from 50 yards away. Forrest asks “What kind of technology is this? Maybe it’s some kind of advanced technology that couldn’t even be conceived of in 1973. Or I s it beaming the words directly into their heads?” They also rely on the same revolving bunch of kooks, quacks, weirdos, and charlatans as though they’re actually experts in anything other than marketing and sensationalism. If you’re a fan of Coast To Coast AM then you’ll probably enjoy the format - if you aren’t bored to death. But if you’re looking for a more grounded exploration of weird stories and phenomena, you can do better.

Wonderful and creepy
The team does so much research it’s amazing! Every topic they cover is interesting and they make it fun to listen to. Everything is connected. I’m not a tinfoil hat kind of person but at the end of each episode i look out my window just in case I’m not being followed by a Black Sedan and keep my eyes out for kids knocking on my door to ask me if they can come inside to use my phone for a call. 👀 When you research the paranormal sometimes the paranormal starts to make itself known to you. As Scott found out in the Sally House.

Used to like it
Sadly I used to like this podcast, but it has gotten so boring. Scott had always been pretentious and tough to listen to, but he has been intolerable since the Sally House episode. I seriously couldn’t listen to him mention the sound on his tape recorder one more time. Lord knows I tired because I really like Forrest. The official Facebook group is like a gang of jackals waiting to pounce the second you say something remotely different than what you are supposed to believe. It’s like a little cult...but not the fun kind . I’ve never contributed to the conversation on there, but it is entertaining to watch, more entertaining than listening to the actual show recently. Although, it is pretty sad when the moderators are siccing their loyal, little legenders on tiny spin off groups, that is clearly marked unofficial, because they don’t like the criticism. Pretty pathetic.. Anyway, thanks for the first year or two of content, that was pretty great!

The best long form podcast
I have been listening to this podcast off and on for several years. I’m always impressed by the quality of research, and enjoy the wide range of interesting and mysterious topics. Some might say this show is too long or gets bogged down in too many details, so maybe it is not for some people. But, I appreciate the long form reporting and commentary. It makes for a good companion during long work days or long car rides.

WOW !!!!!!
I really enjoy the thorough research these guys include in the podcast episodes but that’s rendered insignificant when they talk about politics. People don’t listen to podcasts (especially “spooky” ones like this) to get their political opinions- stop including your inputs. I guess the left just can’t help themselves, they’re considerably standing atop their soapbox.

Great podcast with great hosts and guests
I’ve always been a fan of the paranormal and weird. So when I heard about Astonishing legends I had to listen to them. Some of my favorites were Dyatlov Pass, Black eyed kids, and Skinwalker Ranch. The hosts are great and have a fun time with each subject. Forrest has a fun time doing different voices to set the mood and movie references. Scott is a really fun and kind hearted guy. They have a really good balance and friendship that helps you feel like you’re apart of the conversation talking about these subjects. Great podcast that I recommend to all my friends who enjoy the weird and paranormal!

Found these guys through Jim Harold’s campfire. I’ve been binging their past episodes for about 2 weeks and already up to Mothman film episode. I love the banter between them. This was my first podcast I ever listened to! I started at the very beginning and worked my way up! I love Scott and Forrests relationship and how much research they do into the topics! I do agree that everything is connected since several things that I have either been listening to at the moment or just listened to somehow connects to my real life. Like the time I was painting my house listening to moth man and ran out of paint. I looked down and the color was moth wing!

Well-Researched, Wildly Credulous
I give Astonishing Legends props for their research and production value, which are both excellent. But the hosts, while enthusiastic, are just much too credulous of supernatural phenomena for my taste. I am not trying to be cynical, and I appreciate having an open mind and evaluating all possibilities. But these guys repeatedly bend over backwards to justify even positively disproven events and fit them into their worldview. If you’re looking for a podcast that “proves” the supernatural based on evidence like “Someone said this happened,” then Astonishing Legends will work for you. If you’re looking for a more objective exploration of phenomena, seek elsewhere.

Amazing!
Scott and Forrest do their research with the research corps led by Tess! They show all sides of these legends and make you think about how you feel about the topic. They sum everything up and tell you what they believe, sometimes agreeing and sometimes debunking topics. All in all, they do an amazing job and put everything out there for you to make an informed decision for yourself, not just cram down your throat what they think!

Hello from Oklahoma
Would love to hear you both cover the topic of spontaneous human combustion sometime. It’s always been a freaky prospect, with plausible theories of explanation. Also, I vividly remember being scared to death of a “true” alien abduction movie by the name of Fire In The Sky when I was a young kid in the 90’s would love to know if theres any credibility to that story. Love this podcast. Started it from the beginning and working my way from oldest to newest.

Every episode is a 5 star affair
These two have taken a simple premise, and built an amazing show. I started listening a little over two years ago, and I have been hooked ever since. They don’t always agree on everything, but their opinions are far from concrete. If they are misinformed about a topic, which is usually the case, they are seldom outright wrong, they own up to it in a way that speaks to their integrity as research minded people. They have covered everything from mysterious metal balls, floating top hats, to murderous spirits. After every episode I feel like a temporary expert, based on cursory research. Episodes are sort of short though.

I’ve been listening to Astonishing legends for a couple of years and really really enjoy it. They do great research and make it personable so you feel like you’re listening to friends around the dinner table or over a beer or a coffee. it’s great because they do all this research but it never gets draggy or boring, it just feels like two people that are really enthusiastic about a topic exchanging information with each other and the audience, and making you feel very welcome into the discussion. I as an audience member have never felt left out of the discussion.

Overwhelmed
When I first started listening to podcasts in general I found a few scripted, somewhat monotonous shows that I could listen to at work that were easy to follow while working. I found this one and was so interested in the topics! But the fast talking threw me off... I pushed through and adjusted and this is one of my absolute favorite shows. I can listen with my kids. I can listen at work. I have listened to all episodes, and have started over again. Totally love it and appreciate it AND the banter. Because I’ve found that’s what I think I love the most!

Deep Dives
I usually am not a fan of 2 male voices on a podcast, just my preference is different, but the content of this show is so good that I make an exception for this one podcast. I love that they go deep into topics yet don’t treat it as reciting facts and dates from a book at all. They delve into it for you and carve out an outline for you that doesn’t bury you in too many exact dates, to “muddy the waters” as they say. They focus on the highlights that your brain will actually remember, and you find yourself reaching for the same possible explanations with them, like your minds are brainstorming on the same path. (I find myself nodding alot & saying “yup”.) Alot of paranormal podcasts cover the same topics but if you listen here you are sure to learn more than you did on the shorter versions of topics on other podcasts. This is just what my mind craves.

Takes a long time to get to the point
I love this podcast, the hosts are great and it’s well-produced, but I find myself not hitting play as much lately because I usually listen while driving. One time I was on a 30 minute journey, and literally all I heard of the actually podcast was the summary at the very beginning. The rest was talking about merch, rambling, and advertisements. Your listeners shouldn’t have to fast forward 30 minutes to get to the meat of your podcast! Please consider putting that at the end or communicating it in another way. It’s very frustrating.

Long Time Listener! Don’t let the inpatients get you down!
Love this podcast precisely because of how long and in depth the episodes are. I definitely prefer the full blown paranormal episodes compared to the mostly historical ones, but I can’t say they’re not as well done. Being a native West Virginian the way you respectfully tackled the entirety of the mothman mythos, and did so with stuff that was new to me as well, really let me know y’all were different. Would love to see (hear?) an episode on the flatwoods monster, el chupacabra, and every single haunted place in WV!

A new fan!, and why I appreciate the show!
My intuitive honey found this podcast for me. I’ve listened to at least 2 shows a day for the past week! I’ve never given a lot of these subjects much thought, so I have enjoyed the information and insight. He (my honey) has always been aware of things we cannot “see”, he’s been patient with me to learn on my own time. I especially liked the short talk I think Forest gave before Dan’s experience. (I’m paraphrasing)... We don’t need to believe, we don’t need to be outraged, this info is in the universe whether we hear it or not. It doesn’t change who we are.... unless we allow it to... that’s up to the listener. Keep an open mind, or don’t listen if you’re offended. But maybe, just maybe, you’ll learn something new. I was touched by the show Jim Hunt did with you guys. Living with my intuitive honey, I could relate to the stories! parts made me laugh out loud (at work, headphones on)!!! Please keep doing what your doing, and I can’t wait to see the next level!! I’d give 10 stars if it was an option! Thank you and your crew for having the courage to put these topics out here, thank you for the time and research that’s put into every show, and thanks for being kind and objective to your guests. Your new fan, Jil

Now, most episodes are interviews or contain large portions of interviews, with a lot less of their own takes, research and knowledge - just seems like phoning it in - and the episodes that are researched (psychic horse for example) just aren’t as compelling. Definitely miss the early days when the quality seemed a lot higher.

Good Show
They really go in depth on each subject and do lots of research. There’s just one huge problem, they care way too much of what people think and can’t seem to take any criticism without damaging their fragile confidence. I really don’t care if you pronounce some small towns name wrong and I don’t need to hear you deliberate about it for 10 minutes.

AL just doesn’t feel like it used too. AL used to be my favorite podcast, but it has run its arc or I have run mine with it. There is quite a back log of great shows, so if you’re reading this review you may want to investigate it. Just not my deal anymore.

Absolute Pleasure to Listen to
This podcast is an absolute pleasure to listen to. Forrest and Scott are intelligent, articulate, and witty. Their show topics are fascinating and engaging - and they go in-depth; one topic might last two or even three episodes. But, because they’re so articulate and upbeat, you don’t get bored. Most of these these to men are just decent guys. You know that their hearts and minds are in the right place. Kudos to this team for producing a fabulous podcast!

Keep it up Guys!!!!
Most fun, well researched and presented with the BEST banter of any pod cast! Just became a supporter on patreon and am so excited! Never want Forrest and Scott to be abducted, disappear without explanation or ghost us! Keep it up AL crew! Y’all rock! We drive ( hauling our horses) ALOT.. 3-5 days a week so the more great post cast we have the better! I also like that Scott and Forrest share info about other pods they enjoy! Thanks to the whole AL crew!!!

My favorite mystery show
Long time listener. I wanted too drop some love for Scott, Forest, and their show Astonishing Legends. I love the evidence based radio drama style of their show. on all matters of high strangeness is here on display. I love the long form multi-part series. They really separate the wheat from the chafe when it comes to selecting topics. Thanks for all the information. I will keep listening.

Like it but hard to follow sometimes
Love this show I’m a new listener but there shows are kinda sporadic. Some episodes are very well done have a good timeline and commentary isn’t too overboard. Then others are like all over the place subject to subject I’m like “stay on topic guys!” I like the commentary but sometimes it’s tooooo king and just repetitive. I love a good discussion but jeez I’m like ok u got ur commentary in now can we proceed to the story cuz have the time u talk in future tense about the story to some u related other story and it’s like uhhhhh.

I used to love this podcast. Their stories like Knights of the Golden Circle were the best. They seem to have gotten away from that type story which is a really a shame. I wish they would return to this way of doing their podcasts but I understand they need to do what’s for them.

Basically since one of the hosts heard a door creak in a haunted house the show has plummeted in quality. The early episodes are very well researched but now it’s just interviewing whatever but job they can book.

Want to give it 5 but 2020 hasn’t been great
I love Astonishing Legends and think the show has had ground breaking interviews and is the measuring stick when it comes to research. However the entire 2020 catalog has felt dry. A 2 part series on a psychic horse. A 2 parter on the Pied Piper. 2 parter on the Lost Colony of Roanoke (which has been done to death) Maybe it’s just me and the stories haven’t clicked but it feels like the guys are off. Hopefully there are more compelling topics on the horizon and I’ll happily change to 5 stars. But so help me if they revisit Lady the physic horse I can’t be held responsible for what happens.

An astonishingly good podcast
I’ve been listening to this podcast since the end of season 1. This show is both entertaining and thoroughly thought provoking. But, more than that, Scott and Forest make their listeners feel at home. I’m a grad student getting my PhD and I can tell you all this... the guys have gotten me through many a tough time and many a long night. I am eternally grateful for that. Glad to have them around. Don’t sleep on this show!

Long and lush
As you both often state, you create the equivalent of four podcasts into one. But I know, with the amount of research that goes into each show, you want to give your listeners a full picture. One request - Please stop interviewing authors. I've bought both Chris Rush's and Andrew Lawler's books. I am going broke!! (This was a joke in case you don't get it.)

Astonishing Legends: A New Hope
I am a very loyal podcast listener. I have my 1 sports podcast(The Dirty Sports) and I have my 1 movie podcast (Blank Check) and I also listen to the Ringer. I was finding myself listening to my favorite pods over and over agin...until I found Scott & Forrest on Astonishing Legends. I recently took a new position at my company that has me on the road WAY more often than ever before and I needed new interesting content. I have always been interested in Mysteries and unexplained occurrences and this pod is right up my alley. I have listened to the Moth Man, Jersey Devil, Oak Island and a few more with my favorite being The Patterson-Gilman Film. Especially currently living near Yakima Washington! Keep turning out the excellent content fellas!

DIG THIS.
I listen to hundreds of podcasts, and Astonishing Legends has become a favorite. No hyperbole or people who think they are funny, deep dives worth taking into even familiar subjects. You know a podcast is good when you will listen to them talking about things you already know about, because you know you will hear something new.

My Favorite Podcast
I don’t write reviews. I don’t bother. Not for podcasts or Amazon or Yelp or anything else. Am I selfish? Probably. When I find something I like, I want to keep it to myself. But Astonishing Legends is my favorite podcast, hands down, and I want you to know that. I listen to so many podcasts I can’t even count them, and NOTHING compares to AL for me. I don’t know Scott and Forrest, but they and their work have brought me great happiness for years now. I have learned things from AL that I never would have imagined. They’ve indulged my love for the paranormal, but also my deep appreciation for history. Their series on the Patterson-Gimlin Film (you know, Bigfoot) literally changed my mind about what might exist out there. And that’s the key to appreciating Astonishing Legends: keep an open mind and a critical eye, and you’ll have endless hours of entertainment while laughing and learning. Best of all, the AL crew has built the most respectful, educated, inclusive community of followers I have seen in a podcast. I adore the entire team behind this show, from hosts Scott and Forrest to producer Tess, editor Sarah, sound designer Ryan, the ARC, and all the unheralded guests, supporting friends/family and listeners who contribute in so many ways. To those on the fence about Astonishing Legends, hop over. Give in. Join us. To those already here, I love you — you are my people.

Great podcast pandering politics
For such good researchers to be so mindlessly supporting black lives matter is a sad comment on our times. No one should support racism of any kind, but if you say that all life matters, you will be called a racist. If you are ok with that, you are being intellectually dishonest and bullied by mob rule.

The best podcast EVER
I love this podcast so much. As a curious night owl, I grew up listening to Art Bell on Coast2coast AM every night. I also loved to watch unsolved mysteries every day when I would get home from school. As an adult I was searching high and low for something to fill the void these epic shows left in my life. This is the only podcast that does it. It is so well researched and produced. The hosts are wonderful and this is the only podcast that spends the necessary amount of time on some of these big important topics. Thank you for this wonderful show and if you haven’t downloaded an episode yet, what are you waiting for?!

So I started listening to this podcast quite a while ago and felt it was time to write a review. Just what the bizarre needs!
Scott and Forest clearly have a friendship that flourishes outside of the show. Through their podcast they invite the listener into that friendship. Their exploration into a subjects of paranormal, weird or just plain astonishing is deep, funny, insightful, challenging, in a word, entertaining. This show is like sitting around a campfire, talking about the strangeness in the world. My only disappointment with the show is that every forth week there’s a break. That being said, with the amount of work that clearly goes into each show, the Astonishing Legends team deserves a rest.

Relax, this could be a while.
I’ve been listening to podcasts about the paranormal for over ten years now and I’ve finally found one that doesn’t annoy me after a while. These two guys are extremely smart and work together so well. When they explore a topic, they explore the hell out of it. If it takes three two-hour episodes to do it justice, so be it. This is the podcast for those long road trips. It’s like you’ve got two pals in the car and the interesting conversation just keeps going. Many of these topics have never been investigated this deeply before. The Mothman story took some six full shows to complete. Sometimes when it’s over your head buzzes for a while afterwards from all the knowledge you’ve gained! You won’t be sorry you selected this podcast.

Need to improve their research
It's ok - I was hoping for a little more actual, academic or reviewed research as well as a little more of a skeptical bent. I haven't worked my way to the most recent episodes, but I am disappointed how many incorrect "facts" they perpetuate. I realize I've been in higher ed for a long time and research is something that's been drilled into me. But repeating incorrect information just makes it harder for people to tell what's true and what's a commonly misunderstood statement. Not all hypotheses, ideas, or theories are equally valid.. I do appreciate when they make a point of stating what's a personal belief.

Decent. But, too much BS at the beginning.
Once they can finally figure out how to get on topic they’re easy to listen to, informative, and entertaining. But, you might as well fast forward a half an hour from the start. May 9th episode “Kera Object part one” NINETEEN MINUTES OF BS before they even begin to talk about anything interesting or of relevance to their podcast’ topic.

I’ve listened to almost every single one of the Astonishing Legends podcasts. Each is a gem! It’s scripted enough to stay on topic, but loose enough to allow funny banter. The hosts are clearly friends and that makes the show even better. Dyatlov Pass Episode Sold Me
Found out about the podcast while listening to The What If? Podcast. Spenser & Ryan over at The What If? suggested listening to y’all’s Dyatlov Pass episode (sorry/not sorry I’m a 100% purebred Southern Woman). They said y’all had done a series of episodes on the subject and had gone well in-depth with your research on their story and that your show was the best one to listen to if you had never heard about the tragedy. Then told their listeners to listen to their show on the subject because they didn’t go as in-depth, had some same information and some different info. When I looked your podcast up those years ago I was hooked! Y’all and The What If? and Hillbillie Horror Stories are the podcasts I listen to regularly! This has become one of my favorite podcasts. I love the subjects. And the hosts cover the their topic historically and then discuss the various theories, then give us their opinions on what they believe the most likely answer. I enjoy the history and I know that the prep work takes some exhaustive research and these guys have a really good background that allows for good and interesting links to other legends or myths. Very impressed and I actually look forward to episodes and makes the isolation of this pandemic so much easier. Thanks for educating and pushing us to think about things in new and interesting ways.

I love the show, but...
...sometimes you’ve got to SLOW DOWN. I’ve been a listener for a while now and am aware that there’s a lot of information and details to unpack, but sometimes they (Forest) plow through important setup information. This is most clear in the two most recent episodes (at the time of thiswriting) about Coronodo’s Children. I’ve had to rewind the first three minutes no fewer than 10 times to unpack all of the information. We don’t know this stuff as well as you do; please let it breathe a little bit for us laymen. Otherwise, the show is top-notch and heads and shoulders above any competition, esoteric or historic or otherwise. Y’all are great. And as I write this with your glow in the dark hoodie on my very back, I beseech you to just speak a tad bit slower when introducing historical details. ❤️

If you want to believe...
Your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. You don't have money for a hotel, so you sit up all night in a diner while you wait for the mechanic to finish the repair. The booth behind you is occupied by several people discussing an urban legend that may or may not be true; it's spooky enough you hope it isn't true and fantastic enough you hope it is. Listen to "Skinwalker Ranch," "Dyatlov Pass," "Kidnapped by Bigfoot," or "The Nazi Bell." If you're brave, listen to them at night.

Gets Worse as They Grow
I've listened to every episode they've released. There is a lot of good information here once you skip through the half of the show that's filler and ads. The specials and bonus episodes are worthless. Production value improves throughout to the point that it's now over produced. They try to do a little of everything and it makes it all worse. If you're looking for a good story or for good information there are better podcasts out there.

Scary for scary
My boyfriend and I discovered this podcast whilst driving across the country to Iowa from California. It was very late at night and we were in the middle of Oklahoma en route from Amarillo, TX to Kansas City, MO — we stopped for food and I was a bit tired so I shrugged it off, but on a whim told my boyfriend that I had seen a shadow person approach our car right before the dogs had a meltdown when we were parked eating food. He replied with something like yeah you’ve never heard of shadow people?!?! Well, no, no I had not. A quick search of podcasts, we found ALs and have been thoroughly entertained since. That shadow people podcast got us through one of the more harrowing drives we’ve had to do through a bad snow storm with a California city car with only semi trucks to guide us for light. Something about the podcast being super spooky made our scary drive less scary. So Thank you for what you do! I’ve recommended to many people/ send/ share often. Hope y’all are safe and healthy.

Fantastic but...
Almost half of every episode is them apologizing and handwringing for 10 minutes before they try to pronounce any word or name not in common English usage. The world will not end if you mispronounce something. No one will die if they hear a word not said perfectly. Just stop and do your show.

I only finished Part 1 because I thought the loose ends were vital to Parts 2 and 3... surely it’ll all make sense and we’ll get to the actual content, right? Nope, Part 2 doesn’t present new content. Just further rehash of the same nonsensical tangents that ultimately turned into background noise that eventually bled into Part 3 . I don’t know how to say this without sounding like a total b**ch but here it goes. Some post production editing could have condensed SR into one episode. That one episode would actually contain the same amount of information, (and frustration) but with less background noise.

GET TO THE POINT!!!
I wanted to love this show, I really really did. I’ve listened to probably about 20 hours of episodes thinking maybe it would get better. Unfortunately it did not. SO many “what you’re gonna hear today” and “what we’re gonna go over” and so little actual content. It’s honestly impressive the amount of rambling filler they manage to fit in. The four hour episode I just listened to could have been 30 minutes with the amount of actual new information presented. For the love of god: GET TO THE POINT.

Scott and Forest are the Best!
For a long time I have been interested in the paranormal, aliens, ghosts, mysterious historical events...and this show does them justice. I love their level of research and the deep dives they do on their topics. I have actually learned things listening to this podcast...also, Tess Pfeifle (hope I spelled that right) is absolutely correct...Shakespeare wrote Shakespeare! Honestly, I enjoy this show immensely and after binge-listening my way through it, I hate the fact that I've caught up and now I have to wait for new episodes. Scott and Forest, the hosts, are an amazing pair and they work off each other so well. Also we are rough contemporaries in age so I get their references. I appreciate that more than you know.

Used to be great
I really want to stick with these guys but I can’t even get through an episode these days. They just ramble on about nothing for much of the time. I agree with what many have said about the Sallie House episodes being when things started going downhill. However, the older episodes are well worth a listen! Dyatlov Pass, Oak Island, Amelia Earhart, Greyfriars Kirkyard, Mothman are all excellent!

Great Content but....
I love the idea of this show and listen to other similar podcasts. The content is better than most! But....... I would listen to this one more if there weren’t so many personal tangents and off topic conversations.

New review after a year or so
Guys, I love history like you two do and I keep an open mind on all the mysterious events, so the creepier, the spookier, the better. I think some of your best work is: Dyatlov Pass, Amelia Earhart, the flight missing in Bermuda Triangle -I love plane mysteries!— the Flannan Isles Lighthouse, Sallie House, Tamam Shud, the Welsh UFOs, among many others. You really do your research and sometimes go even more in depth than I prefer. Some of your podcasts do go on! I could not stay with you in the Voynich Manuscript which for me was one where there was too much uninteresting detail. Sometimes the reason - just my opinion - is that you go off on unnecessary tangents. Also - probably because they are so long, there are a few too many ads. But that’s understandable. (However, in those ads, please stop pushing your voice, Forest! Speak in your normal voice) Thank you both!

Always interesting
I find almost every episode interesting and the fact that they seem to not be totally in the tank for yet still accepting of some arguably crazy theories keeps me from turning it off.

- Conjuring Philip Part 2As stated in the book, Conjuring up Philip: An adventure in psychokinesis, written by Iris M. Owen, in the introduction written by her husband, Dr. A.R. George Owen, the “Group of 8’s” initial goals were to first find out whether seemingly interactive spirit communication could be produced in bright light. Secondly, they wanted to know if a spirit medium was necessary or if ordinary people could generate this phenomenon. Third, if this force was produced by a disembodied spirit or was caused by the experiment’s living participants. They also hoped for what they thought would be their pinnacle of success: to produce a collective hallucination of their imaginary friend Philip, which everyone could document and witness. Unfortunately, Philip never physically materialized, but amazingly their other objectives did. However, one question remains, perhaps to be answered by neuroscientists and metaphysicists of the future – what exactly is this phenomenon, and what is its cause? If this invisible psychokinetic force of “table-turning” is produced by living human consciousness via quasi-involuntary action, as famed scientist Michael Faraday was thinking, or the “ideo-motor principle” put forth by Dr. William B. Carpenter, then just how powerful are our brains and what else could be achieved? Or perhaps Philip was more like the concept of a tulpa or, more appropriately, to this situation, an egregore, and if so, does an element of Philip still exist somewhere in the ether, and what about the multitudes of manufactured entities throughout the ages? Maybe there is straight-up spirit activity in the mix? Most researchers who dabbled in this subject agreed that optimal success requires a firm belief in the possibility, eager anticipation of the interaction, and an unwavering expectation that results would be forthcoming. Although the Philip Experiment would eventually fade from scientific and public interest, there is renewed interest in the age-old wisdom that with focused intention combined with practice, the mind can create magic... or at least someone to talk to. - Conjuring Philip Part 1In 1972, the Toronto Society for Psychical Research, led by mathematical geneticist Dr. A.R. George Owen, assembled a group of volunteers from various backgrounds to try something never before attempted. For their experiment, they aimed to manifest a fictional ghost they named “Philip Aylesford” and would try to communicate with this fabricated entity through séance-like sessions conducted under laboratory conditions and bright lighting. A fictional biography was created for Philip that the group could focus on. He was to be born in England in 1624 and connected to real places and events but with intentional historical errors inserted as control markers. For over a year, the “Group of 8” met weekly, and for over a year… nothing happened. But then, upon the advice of two pioneering paranormal researchers, the group changed their tactics to make their attempts more in the style of seances from the turn of the 20th century. This made the meetings more like festive social gatherings, with singing and laughter, under dimmer lighting. Soon, they would experience tangible responses to their questions in the form of knocking for “yes” and “no.” But the psychokinetic activity didn’t stop there. The group also felt a presence in the room with palpable energy, unexplainable breezes, and vibrations of the card table they used, which would tilt and scoot across the room seemingly under its own power. This might seem like fanciful exaggerations from overly enthusiastic true believers or downright kooks, but this phenomenon was continually repeatable under various conditions and even captured by TV cameras. If it were a parlor trick, this result would be mind-blowing. Even more astounding, however, is considering the implications to our reality if an invisible, conscious force exists and is demonstrable. What is the source and nature of this ethereal influence? In other words, if Philip was wholly made up, who or what was this group communicating with? Visit our website for a lot more information on this episode.0 comments0
- Astonishing Legends Feb 26 · 1h 57m The Great Mull Air MysteryOn Christmas Eve, 24 December 1975, concert violinist Peter Gibbs was just finishing dinner with his girlfriend at the Glenforsa Hotel on the Isle of Mull in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. The pair had traveled to this island in the Inner Hebrides four days earlier to look for hotels to purchase for his property investment company. Gibbs had rented an airplane to island hop during their holiday to use in his search, and the Glenforsa, with its adjacent airstrip, would serve as their base camp. But after dinner, Gibbs did something most of us would find odd, perhaps not for the bold World War II RAF Spitfire veteran fighter pilot; he decided to take a solo plane flight to demonstrate that night flights to the island were possible. It was supposed to be a 10-minute joyride while Gibbs' girlfriend, Felicity Grainger, waited on the unlit grass runway with two flashlights to guide him back in. No one would see Gibbs' Cessna F150H ever again. But, four months later, Gibbs' body would be found 400 feet up a rocky hillside and splayed over a fallen tree. Usually, finding the missing person in a disappearance means "case closed," but not in this case. The condition and location of Gibbs' remains would generate many more questions than answers. He didn't seem to suffer injuries consistent with falling or jumping while airborne. Nor was it likely that he would've made the arduous hike to that location after ditching in the freezing ocean. To add to the enigma, Gibbs appeared in an area thoroughly searched immediately following his disappearance and routinely patrolled by local shepherds. These baffling clues combine into what has become known as "The Great Mull Air Mystery." Visit our website for a lot more information on this episode.0 comments0
- The Nazca Lines Part 2In part two of our series on the Nazca lines, we examine some of the prevailing theories about their purpose. From astronomical earthwork markers, maps of aquifer sources, and a gargantuan textile & mummy manufactory to processional pathways for worshippers, a conclusive and comprehensive explanation continues to elude researchers and the public. Yet while most scholars and enthusiasts concentrate on the biomorphic geoglyphs of Nazca, perhaps the greater mystery lies in the older, more sophisticated, and complex lines in the Palpa region to the north. Here, the multitude of amazingly long stretches of "runway" courses, zig-zags, and labyrinthine "paper clip" patterns suggest that this culture's motivations may have been technological as well as spiritual. In addition, many of these lines were carved into what appear to be the leveled ridges of the mountainous geography, where tracks can lead to steep dropoffs. Whatever the speculations, we may only be one new discovery away from finally solving the riddle of the Nazca lines. Visit our website for a lot more information on this episode.0 comments0
- The Nazca Lines Part 1On a high desert plateau in southwestern Peru, only about 230 miles south of the capital Lima, hundreds of massive and mysterious artistic designs are scraped into the arid soil. Technically known as geoglyphs, these figures range from straight lines and geometric shapes to biomorphic caricatures of animals, plants, and a humanoid. Typically composed of single, continuous outlines, the earthworks can vary in size from 440 to 1200 yards across or between 400 and 1100 meters. The lines combined measure more than 800 miles in length or 1290 kilometers. The area containing the geoglyphs is roughly a whopping 170 square miles or 440 square kilometers. Although the lines only measure from about twelve inches to six feet in width and four to six inches deep, many can be seen from space leading to hypotheses about their purpose. The lines are believed to have been created by first the Paracas and then the Nazca cultures over a period from 400 BCE to 500 CE by removing a shallow layer of darker, oxidized topsoil to reveal the lighter clay-like dirt below. So we may know the how of the lines, but what about the why? Alternative researchers wonder about the purpose of the art if most couldn't readily be seen by their creators at ground level. Were the Nazca peoples, like the Paracas culture before them, creating these designs for metaphoric rituals to gain self-control of their subsistence, or were these societies imploring the gods for help? The more popular illustrations include creatures like a spider, a hummingbird, fish, a heron, and a monkey. These could be seen as natural elements that may connect spiritually to symbols for fertility and agriculture seen in other Nazca art. But one humanoid depiction called the "Owl Man" by some and "The Astronaut" by others particularly sparks the imagination of unconventional thinkers. Join us as we begin to scratch the surface of the wonder and meaning of what has become known as the Nazca Lines. Visit our website for a lot more information on this episode.0 comments0
- End of LifeLike so many stories and people that come our way, this is another one that seemed to be put in our path by some grander force for a higher purpose. Recently, Scott and his wife Emily were out at dinner and struck up a conversation with the stranger sitting next to them, Lauren Hopper, who told them she worked as an end-of-life doula. While many of us have heard of a Birth Doula, someone who provides advice, emotional support, and physical comfort to mothers during childbirth, Lauren’s job takes place at the opposite end of life’s journey. She gives hope and guidance to those about to pass away and their loved ones in their grief. The conversation between the three was profound, fascinating, and reassuring to such a degree that we felt it needed to be shared, and the sooner, the better. While most of us will never experience the things we talk about on this show, there is one absolute certainty in that every one of us will pass eventually, and if you’re of a certain age, you’ll be dealing with the imminent departure of your parents or friends. While you may not agree with Lauren’s beliefs or assessment of her experiences, we must all admit that we won’t know for sure until our end comes. Please join us, Lauren, and our friend Rich Hatem for a discussion on the essential question in life, what happens after we die? The easiest answer is to believe that nothing happens, but why not entertain the notion that something ineffably wonderful does, that no one ever really dies? - Astonishing Legends Dec 10 · 1h 35m Massacre at Duffy's Cut Part 2In Part Two of our series on the massacre at Duffy's Cut, we continue our discussion with investigating brothers, Drs. Frank and Bill Watson. We examine the historical circumstances and the likelihood of these 57 workers all dying of cholera or being murdered out of fear and prejudice. Also considered is the remarkable number of coincidences and hauntings connected to the paranormal nature of this tragedy's discovery. Whether they fell victim to the harsh conditions of past eras or the brutality of callous ignorance, perhaps the restless spirits of Duffy's Cut can finally find peace and recognition. - Massacre at Duffy's Cut Part 1In September of 2000, history professor Dr. William "Bill" Watson of Immaculata University stopped by the campus for a break with friend and fellow bagpipe musician Tom Connor during a long drive back from a performance. While there, around 10:00 p.m. near the typically deserted faculty center lawn, both men witnessed a strange apparition that would later lead to a remarkable and meaningful coincidence. Two years after this experience, Bill's twin brother, Reverend Dr. Frank Watson, by chance, came across a file once kept by their grandfather Joseph Tripician, a former secretary to the president of the Pennsylvania Railroad in the 1970s. One official record in this file documented a tragedy connected to a ghost story their grandfather told annually at Thanksgiving dinner. The report outlined a mass death of workers on an arduous stretch of the then Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad in the summer and fall of 1832. Contractor Phillip Duffy had hired 57 Irish immigrants to lay the tracks for roughly a mile through thickset trees and over a deep ravine about 20 miles west of Philadelphia. 39 newly arrived immigrants, one of them a woman, and 18 others already working there would all be dead within ninety days of their hire. Irish Catholic immigrants were often viewed with prejudice as unseemly and unwelcome intruders by established society and expendable workers by the railroad and mining companies profiting from their cheap and desperate labor. When the second global cholera pandemic reached this work camp, the record suggested that all 57 had succumbed to the deadly disease. Compelled by the discovery of this document, in August 2004, Bill and Frank Watson, along with two university associates, led an archaeological excavation to find the accurate burial site for these victims. On March 24, 2009, it was announced that the first human remains had been found. However, a curious twist was discovered by noted physical and forensic anthropologist Janet Monge, who analyzed the bones. Her examination revealed that at least two of the skulls found first likely received perimortem blunt-force trauma and gunshot wounds. This conclusion leads to the prominent theory that workers were either killed out of fear they would spread the contagion, to quell a rebellion or both. Please join us for part one of a story that yearns to be told, the Massacre at Duffy's Cut. Visit our website for a lot more information on this episode.0 comments0
- Battle at Cisco GroveOn Friday, September 4, 1964, Donald Shrum and two friends from his job at Aerojet made camp in a remote section of wilderness near the Loch Leven Lakes in an area called Cisco Grove, roughly 60 miles northeast of Sacramento, CA. The three men had planned a relaxing weekend of bow hunting for deer, but those plans would change later that evening as Shrum experienced an exhausting and terrifying UFO close encounter of the worst kind. As night approached, Shrum got lost and separated from his hunting buddies and found himself isolated on a bluff almost a mile from camp. An experienced woodsman, Shrum decided it would be wiser to spend the night in a tree safe from predators rather than trying to find his way back over rough terrain in the dark. Seeing an unusual moving light on the horizon, Shrum built three signal fires to attract what he thought were his rescuers. The fires did seem to attract this object’s attention, but not the kind anyone wants. Beyond his wildest imagination and expectations, he would soon find himself in an all-night battle to save his life or at least his freedom. As Shrum perched in his pine tree 12 feet off the ground and quietly observed this light, he realized it was something like a headlight on a massive cigar-shaped craft. A smaller ship emerged from one of this mothership’s large rectangular ports and took a position some distance to his north. Shortly after that, Shrum could hear rustling in the brush heading his direction. What emerged were a combination of beings he described as humanoid and wearing space suits and at least a couple of what appeared to him as clunky robots who seemed to be on a mission to study the flora. Once they had noticed Shrum in the tree, however, a few of these weird beings seemed intent on abducting him for reasons he feared to ponder. Until daybreak, Shrum would fight off these intruders with everything he had at his disposal. Shooting arrows and lobbing flaming personal items at them only seemed to delay their trying to climb his tree in between assaults with a mysterious white gaseous mist that would render him temporarily unconscious. Perhaps ironically, it was employing primitive means to counter advanced technology, but whatever the unfathomable cause, it worked. Donald Shrum lived to tell his tale but only after decades of PTSD and secrecy to protect his reputation. While this story may seem unbelievable to you, the United States Air Force certainly believed it and went so far as to rake away all the evidence, literally. What remains is one of the most bizarre and disturbing testimonies in UFO lore – one man’s battle against extraterrestrials at Cisco Grove. - Your True Halloween Stories Part 3Tonight's episode concludes this series of our listeners' most terrifying true tales for Halloween. In the final Part Three of this anthology, we're proud to present five stories we believe were some of the most horrifying we've ever heard. The collection covers a curated compilation of creepy creatures. You may be tempted to classify them under the categories of a goblin, doppelgänger, genie, demon, and something that defies easy classification, but what are these things that people have encountered? Do these beings even know what they are, or does it matter? In our human desire to measure and rationalize, ask yourself: Does your "rational" explanation account for every detail offered in these reports? Do you want to explain away these testimonies because of your confidence in a complete understanding of the natural or unnatural world? Or could it be your fear of the unknown? How do we know what's possible or impossible when we have such a limited and naive grasp of the true nature of our reality? Whatever your stance, we wish to thank everyone who submitted a story for this series or has ever sent us an email detailing a personal paranormal encounter. We've filed and cherished every one of them, and we hope to feature the ones we couldn't get to in some future offering. And a message to all who have generously and bravely shared with us: while your experience may be uncommon and unsettling, just know that you're not alone. - Your True Halloween Stories Part 2As we continue with Part Two of our Halloween series featuring our listeners' true accounts, tonight's episode presents another three eerie tales of the supernatural. The first story tells of a haunted college rooming house with a spirit fond of movie catchphrases. And it may have the power to compel humans to deliver poignant messages. Our second interview details a forceful presence with the ability to invade your dreams and physically send you to a dark portal of a waking nightmare. Our final story is about a random encounter with... well, let's just say, one of the most terrifying entities the audience hopes they never meet. The twist here is that whatever this thing is, it wasn't content to let you merely run away. Visit our website for a lot more information on this episode.0 comments0
- Your True Halloween Stories Part 1Astonishing Legends is all about fascinating and mysterious topics. And within that category, the details we cover can be unsettling or downright terrifying. But you may not realize that some of the most chilling and creepy accounts we've ever encountered have come from our listeners! We've received thousands of emails over our eight years of podcasting, and we appreciate and value every one of them. We realize that it takes no small amount of courage to send such personal anecdotes to strangers out in the world, becoming vulnerable to ridicule or scorn. So to honor that conviction and trust and show our tremendous gratitude to our audience, we're proud to present your scariest true stories in three parts. Also, because the Spooky Season is upon us, and most of us enjoy a frightening Halloween tale, what better time to hear about the weirdness of our world? So we invite you to settle in, lock your doors and windows, suspend any disbelief you might have, and enjoy these narratives as entertainment, evidence, or cautionary tales. However you choose to consume them, if the urge to publicly debunk strikes you, please respect that our storytellers insist these reports are genuine. They really did happen to someone. Remember that sometimes the most chilling thing you can see at the beginning of any work of horror fiction are the words, "Based on a true story." - Astonishing Legends Sep 26 · 3h 45m The Missing 411 Part 2In Part Two of our series on the Missing 411 phenomenon, we'll first examine a study conducted to determine which National Parks are the most dangerous in the United States. The numbers and causes may surprise you. We then take a closer look at a few more puzzling cases and, with a critical eye, examine the data presented by David Paulides and the CanAm Project vs. what's been reported by the news media. Discrepancies raise questions when ascertaining the objective facts and judging if the evidence is remarkable. There are plenty of errors and omissions from all parties, but what are the causes and intentions behind them? With hundreds, perhaps thousands of incidents, it's understandable when a news outlet rushing to report under a deadline makes mistakes, but can the same leeway be given to Paulides? Are they honest mistakes or the handy claim that details are "cherry-picked," overlooked, or embellished to prop up a narrative and sell content? Will later discoveries change the investigations, are we being told everything, and what are the motivations of those doing the telling or omitting? Are blunders in the reporting, whatever the intent, proof that nothing extraordinary is going on? As we conclude the episode with an overall skeptical analysis and finish with our personal assessments, it's clear that what is deemed either a mundane tragedy or a mysterious phenomenon is in the eye of the beholder. As far as any alarming pattern to these cases is concerned, if strange yet commonplace coincidences do occur, how many coincidences are too many? - The Missing 411 Part 1A former police officer turned writer David Paulides was taken aside by a National Park Ranger and told about a disturbing trend he'd realized. This Ranger asserted that some people were going missing in the woods under mysterious circumstances leaving only puzzling evidence of their fate. Of course, people often go missing in the wilderness in tragic yet explainable events but what was troubling to these Rangers in the field was the apparent pattern of the occurrences and the subsequent investigation efforts. This Ranger stated that during the first seven to ten days of a disappearance, an all-out Search and Rescue effort ensued with plenty of press coverage. However, after the first week of a rescue mission, it seemed to them that the media stopped reporting, the search for the missing was called off, and no further explanation from the authorities was provided. An additionally alarming trend was that there seemed to be a reluctance or inability on behalf of the National Park Service administration to collect and provide statistics on these disappearances to the public, either through inefficiency or secrecy. If this is true, perhaps it could be from a concerted effort to diminish negative publicity and undue fear about park visitation, or maybe there is something dreadful the officials don't want the public to know. Whatever the reason, this conversation launched Paulides on a now decade-long quest for answers. Initially, after over three years and 9000 hours of investigation, utilizing his 20 years of experience with law enforcement and the resulting connections, Paulides had gathered enough information to compile two books. Missing 411 – Western U.S. was released on March 1, 2012, documenting the stories of people who have vanished in seemingly bizarre instances in the western half of the United States. The second book, Missing 411 – Eastern U.S., was published later that month and contains special sections on unusual outdoor activities that seem related and a master list of all missing persons. Currently, ten books have been published, with more on the way, two documentaries have been produced, and Paulides' ongoing popular YouTube channel continues to highlight cases. In addition, retired police officers, Search and Rescue experts, and other professionals are dedicated to continuing researching and investigating these cases with their CanAm Missing project. One worrisome aspect they've found is that in many situations, parents, relatives, and friends of the missing believe that their loved one was kidnapped or abducted, sometimes with them nearby. No matter the causal connections or whether you think these disappearances are sad but commonplace, a conspiracy lurks or is nonexistent; the fact is that these cases are real, and the victims' stories deserve and need to be told. The question remains, however – what is really going on out in the wilds, and is it something sinister we should all be worried about? - Numbers StationsSince antiquity, espionage and deceit have always been crucial weapons of warfare. As technology and strategy have advanced over the centuries, methods for governments to deliver information and orders to their secret agents in the field have become more sophisticated. Yet, one form of cryptic communication implemented in the early 20th century has proven ever effective and relatively simple. With the advent of wireless telegraphy combined with a cipher technique called a "One-time Pad," militaries have been sending coded messages to their undercover operatives abroad since World War I. It wasn't until shortwave and HAM radio enthusiasts started noticing eerie and enigmatic broadcasts of spoken series of numbers or strange electronic sounds that these coded communiqués aroused widespread curiosity during the height of the Cold War. Although the use of public airwaves for clandestine messaging seems to have declined in recent years, listeners can still hear these top-secret instructions delivered to unknown spies, perhaps even your neighbor. One can only wonder how these spooky transmissions saved or cost lives or what world-changing actions they triggered. Join us as we delve into the mysterious world of spycraft and Numbers Stations. - The Somerton Man - Mystery Solved? On December 1, 1948, an unknown man was found lying dead on the sand on Somerton Beach next to the neighborhood of Glenelg, about 7 miles (11 km) southwest of Adelaide, South Australia. He had no money or identification on him, the labels in his clothing were cut off, and his minimal possessions yielded no clues. Further adding to the mystery, a rolled-up scrap of paper with the Persian phrase " tamám shud," translating to "is over" or "is finished," was found in the man's watch pocket around the time of his autopsy. The scrap was later discovered torn from a copy of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, a circa 11th-century collection of poems by Khayyam, known as "the Astronomer-Poet of Persia." The book found tossed into a car after a public appeal by the police appeared to have previous writing indentations on a page adjacent to the torn-out one, revealing a local phone number and text speculated to be a coded message. With no further clues as to the Somerton Man's identity other than an abandoned suitcase left at the Adelaide railway station, a plaster cast was made of the man's bust following the coroner's inquest, and the body was embalmed nine days after its discovery and buried. For almost 74 years, the mystery of the Somerton has intrigued authorities, amateur sleuths, and the general public, including physicist, Electrical and Electronic Engineering professor Dr. Derek Abbott. For over a decade, Dr. Abbott and his team of grad students at the University of Adelaide worked on cracking the code found in the Rubaiyat and attempting to arrange a genetic DNA analysis. In partnership with internationally recognized forensic genealogist Dr. Colleen Fitzpatrick, Abbott and Fitzpatrick announced on July 26, 2022, that they have finally uncovered the identity of Australia's most famous "John Doe." Extracting DNA from chest hairs found in the Somerton Man's plaster cast has led them to a name and an occupation. But will this name lead to solving the remaining puzzle pieces? Pathologists at the time believed he was likely poisoned, but why, and by whom? Was there a Cold War connection, and why did he spend his last day in Adelaide? Circling back to the alternate name for this case, tamám shud, is this mystery really over, is it finished? Visit our webpage on this episode for a lot more information.0 comments0
- I Think Therefore AI Part 2As we continue our discussion based on Blake Lemoine’s assertion that the Large Language Model chatbot LaMDA had become sentient, we relay the rest of his conversation with the program and then some questions and answers with Lemoine himself. But as Lemoine has said, machine sentience and personhood are just some of many questions to be considered. His greater issue is how an omnipresent AI, trained on an insufficient data set, will affect how different people and cultures interact and who will be dominated or excluded. The fear is that the ultimate result of protecting corporate profits will outweigh global human interests. In light of these questions about AI’s ethical and efficient development, we highlight the positions and insights of experts on the state and future of AI, such as Blaise Agüera y Arcas and Gary Marcus. The directives of responsible technology development and the right track to Deep Learning are more grounded than the fantastical thoughts of killer robots. Yet hovering over all of the mechanics are the philosophies of what constitutes sentience, comprehending and feeling as a person does, and being human enough. The reality of Artificial Intelligence matching humans may be fifty years in the future, or five hundred, but if that day ever comes, let’s hope it’s an egalitarian future where we are the masters and not the servants.
