Was better in 2020
Show has declined the last 12 months or so - Ben’s bleeding heart for more welfare has become hard to listen to- Compound and Friends has been awesome and is replacing Animal Spirits for me

Much respect
I have a lot of respect for this podcast for rarely taking a break over the years. Even if someone is on vacation they figure out a way to get it done. This is the most American podcast. Europeans would have had no episodes during the month of August and taken December to mid January off as well. Not this show. Makes me want to eat a hot dog and watch one of the great recommendations at the end of the show.

Disappointed
Too much crypto shilling. Plus paid ads for art and other nonsense “investments” and too many paid (I assume) “Talk your book” episodes.

Get rid of “Talking Your Book” episodes
The Wednesday episodes are fun, informative, and casual. I recommend. I would rate this 5 stars if not for the “Talking Your Book” episodes on Friday. It’s filled with charlatans (Type 1 and 2, Ben Carlson!) who found a way to effectively securitize a square centimeter of a Picasso that they want to sell to you or a piece of a classic car you’ll never see or enjoy. It’s mostly nonsense. Amazing how everyone in those episodes has found a way to get the benefits of {fill in benefit} while protecting their clients from {fill in downside}. Everyone has a barbell strategy and so on. Prudent listeners should just stick to the Wednesday episodes. I’ll bump my review to 5 stars when they get rid of “Talking Your Book”. Less is more.

Good not great
This show used to be a good way to understand the markets and finance world, but has slowly gone downhill. There is way too much discussion on the the fad of the month, and overreacting to the market news of the week. Too many half baked ideas thrown out without much critical analysis. Also, neither host listens when the other is speaking, they are just waiting for their turn to talk.

Love this show. I am not a financial markets obsessive, but Michael and Ben keep me up to date each week with what I need to know, but no more. And I always enjoy the financial advice and book and pop culture recs.

My wife calls them my best friends
Animal Spirits has grown into one of my favorite podcasts. I appreciate the balanced, non-exaggerated look at the market along with genuine and honest reflections on l family and life. Not to mention the best movie reviews out there. I’m literally watching severance because of Animal Spirits. I always talk about them to my wife and now she calls them my best friends. As a mid-30s male I am sure I am not alone in that sentiment.

No time wasted
Very informative show done by people who love this stuff. Just like the rest of us that listen to them. Having one person on the East Coast and the other in the Midwest, you’re able to relate to every day life across the entire country. Your takes on movies, books, and opinions are also informative. Short, sweet, and the point. You are definitely not wasting your time listening to this podcast. Time well spend. Definitely worth listening to.

Agree w/ other Reviews re: Crypto & Macro Advice
I’ve been a longtime listener of Animal Spirits but haven’t listened in the last few months or so. The shilling for crypto and early stage tech investments really got overbearing after awhile, especially for a pod that I used to listen to for sound personal finance advice. All in all, the show just feels like it got First Take/Barstool-ified.

Informative and Hilarious
The hosts manage to give great information, giving technical ideas but keeping it listenable, and very funny at the same time with personal anecdotes and observations. They don’t act like they know everything, though they are clearly very smart, and are so excited to bring up new ideas and people from the field to share their ideas and products.

Love hate
I listen often to this podcast but honestly sometimes am dumbfounded they advise real clients. Today was a good example. I have heard before where they claim that the U.S. can magically spend any amount it chooses because the fed can just set rates at 0% so debt doesn’t matter. It didn’t help that the inflation report came out today at 7.5% over 12 months. They sometimes are a mile wide and an inch deep.

Was a great show, recent changes are not so great
I’ve been a loyal listener since around episode 20. I think Michael And Ben work really well together and have a great on air chemistry. Their discussion of their personal financial choices and the topics about their lives still make for really interesting content. The recent changes have made the show a lot less interesting. The constant discussion of Crypto and NFTs are annoying, I might be wrong but it seems they might be misreading their audience. I’m tired of trying to have to fast forward through them. I also know their employer has a crypto index product which may make them have to talk about it. I think Ben’s experience with The institutional asset side of the business also has a lot of interesting material to the show. He seems to have taken to the idea ( in the last year or so) that the solution for everything is to have the government pay for it. It’s not even a left or right thing it’s just an odd take for somebody who claims to be a capitalist and enjoys a nice living based on free markets

I enjoy the chemistry from the pair. Hope they mix up the content more, most shows are about housing, fed, inflation, or alternative investments.

Meh
They are okay. Good investors with some good advice. They seem to embrace the FED and Keynesianism. The thing that irks me about these guys is that they seem so flippant about the poor and how current monetary policies can hurt them. Only caring about the bottom dollar, regardless of who gets destroyed on the monetary war-path. Again, decent advise for stocks and such. These guys appear to embrace the benefits of the Cantillon effect. Perhaps I’ve got them wrong, maybe not. They also like terrible movies.

A true unicorn - this fast-paced paced, intelligent and thought provoking podcast rises far above anything I’ve subscribed to in the past 10+ years, from a listener who normally has over 25 finance titles active in my queue. Great if overhearing two morons converse at a bar appeals to you
When I discovered Animal Spirits the first few episodes seemed solid. Sadly with each episode they became increasingly insufferable. Discussions are void of any insight or intelligence and narrow mindedness is clearly their Achille’s heel. Their perspectives are warped by the very cognitive distortions of those they seek to enlighten. Had to unsubscribe after a while.

Came for Investing, Stayed for Dad Jokes
Michael and Ben have something special, they are so good at discussing topics in impartial ways without being too heavy handed. Sometimes I wish they would be more opinionated but that isn’t always the most useful thing when discussing matters of fact that can be interpreted differently, they do a very good job of checking their bias at the door. Start listening you won’t regret it.

These guys are clowns…
… But in my circles that’s a huge compliment. I’ve been in the asset management business for 20+ years and when I listen to the show, and I do so religiously, I feel like I’m chatting with colleagues… Needless to say that’s been missing in my professional life for the past year. Thanks Michael and Ben for exploring interesting and timely topics in an entertaining way. Keep up the good work! Update: Dodgeball overrated Ben? That comment is worth at least a one star downgrade. I’m starting to wonder if Batnick’s shoulders are getting tired... Another Dodgeball slight Ben? I may be outgrowing you. Time to upgrade. Thank goodness for Michael. PS, sounds like you have a broken Peloton.

Best easily digestible financial podcast
Everyone knows target date funds can be confusing, not to mention, time consuming, to manage. Luckily, Ben breaks things down in to layman’s terms and Michael is there to make sure he doesnt get too over enthusiastic. In all seriousness, these guys are great. If you're looking for stock picking advice you've come to the wrong place. Just solid commentary on financial markets that is easy to digest. Another reviewer commented that it’s like listening to two of your closest friends that have mastered their craft, which is a perfect description. Love the movie, book, and tv show recommendations at the end as well. Buy their books, subscribe to their newsletters, listen to Animal Spirits.

It Finally Happened
Absolute serendipity on Episode 185 at precisely 28 minutes into the podcast when Ben inadvertently pronounces Jeff Bezos’ name properly (BAE-zoes, not BEE-zoes). This is the only thing that has held me back from giving this podcast a 5-star review - now that it has happened the financial markets, and myself, can finally be at peace and PE ratios will slowly return to the realm of logic. Great podcast though, you guys are awesome. Ben, please for the love of god come to the light and stay on the Baezos train

Makes sense (common) to me
Whether it is an intro to back door IRAs (wow that is legal??) to their weekly report from the spirit world, always worth a listen. I have enjoyed hearing their fundamental understanding of the economy evolve over the last year. At first I was not interested in the “talk your book” episodes but I found a few to be great. I would love them to talk to Stephanie Kelton about how investors should work with the crypto-MMT world we are muddling into.

The Dan Carlins of Finance
It’s so refreshing to hear a finance/investing podcast that doesn’t aggressively recommend certain stocks but still manages to comment on the markets. Their financial advice goes beyond the traditional finance podcasts that have dozens of episodes based on “the 10 things you should be doing” that we’ve all heard before as they bring in guests to their podcast.

Discovered their clips on YouTube and quickly converted over to the full podcast. I’m not a professional investor or finance guy by any means so I appreciate the diverse manner in which they talk about topics in that space. I’m in my early 30s and never really paid a lot of attention to wealth-building outside contributing to my 401k and personal savings account so listening to these guys the past year has really motivated my wife and I to not only think bigger but learn more about the market, asset diversification, etc. Most importantly it has been reassuring to hear regularly that there are pathways to wealth and financial independence that don’t involve constantly trying to beat the market or needing to achieve a professional broker-level of knowledge and awareness. That isn’t a criticism of those strategies...it just isn’t the strategy that works for our individual lifestyle. Highly recommend. Always interesting stuff discussed. They also offer great content outside the podcast and I’ve invested in following their blogs and purchasing their books.

Solid balance of informative and entertaining
I've been listening to Mike & Ben via Animal Spirits for probably two years now. Having tried a couple investing podcasts, this was the first one that stuck for me and I've listened ever since. Mike & Ben strike a great balance in keeping their conversations educational/informative yet entertaining. They've got strong chemistry commonly poking fun at one another but keeping the conversations moving at a good pace. I've found they can be reactionary, as we all tend to be, but as long as you can listen without taking everything they say as gospel then it's an amazing podcast for learning about investing and keeping up to date on the markets and greater financial world.

As a rookie investor back in 2017 this show was a great jumping off point to get me started learning about markets and investing. Been listening since around March and love the podcast. Covers a great mix of financial news and what’s going on in world. Recommendations at the end of each ep are awesome. Ben - I like you, but have to say I’m #TeamMichael for most of these. Letting “what’s in the box?” go over your head a few months ago was unforgivable. Huge miss I still can’t forget

Most approachable financial podcast
Seriously great podcast with knowledgeable guys that have a nice “conversation with your buddies” kind of feel. Rundowns of recent articles and thoughts on the market that have lead, for me at least, to some interesting new investments. Also a great way to catch you up on the financial world if you missed reading a bunch of things that week. It’s left me laughing on multiple occasions and is easily my favorite for drives.

I’ve listened to 200+ episodes and still don’t know. Michael and Ben are great to listen to on my commute and dog walks. This is a great mix of personal finance, maintaining a proper “behavioral hygiene” when it comes to investing and general market updates. The ‘Talk Your Book’ interview sessions are great as well because they ask these fund managers the kind of questions I personally would’ve asked.

Great/approachable finance discussions
I only listen to a few podcasts and this is one of them. The chemistry between the cohosts is excellent, and they strike a great balance between being funny/serious/informative/etc. I find many of the Friday interview guests super interesting too, even when whatever product/business they are selling is not directly relevant to me. I always feel a little smarter listening to these guys/the rest of the compound crew. Definitely give it a shot!

One of the best personal finance podcasts around
I listen to A LOT of personal finance podcasts. But Animal Spirits is the only one where I am excited to see that they’ve released a new podcast. Isn’t that the true measure of a good podcast- when you’ve subscribed to 100 podcast, but this is the first one you listen to when you open your podcast app? There are the ones you feel like you SHOULD listen to (here’s looking at you The Economist Radio podcast) but Animal Spirits is always enjoyable and educational. Check it out!

One of my favorites!
I’ve been a listener and reader of Michael and Ben for a long time, and Animal Spirits consistently provides relevant, current and important finance and personal finance information. They do a great job of summarizing what is going on in the markets, balancing humor and their personal experiences to give their message greater impact. It’s just the right length (~45 minutes) and frequency (1X or 2X a week) - I use it to keep up with the latest topics in finance and don’t feel like I am missing anything. They aren’t preachy, aren’t trying to sell you anything, and maintain their perspective using history and real-world human behavior observations. A great podcast for “Noobwhales” (inside joke) and experienced finance professionals alike.

Educational and Entertaining
Michael and Ben bring common sense and humility to personal finance, current events and entertainment in this podcast. The breadth of information from the most basic concepts of personal finance to guests in more advanced fields of finance and investing is excellent. Their ability to present what they know and admit what they do not know/cannot be known is refreshing and often missing from other podcasts on finance and markets. Their chemistry as a New Yorker and Michigander is entertaining and it often times feels like I’m sitting with friends as I listen to the podcast. Cannot recommend highly enough!

Make me smarter
If you are relatively new to starting to invest you could not find a better Square 1 to start you journey. Fans of other Compound podcasts will love Animal Spirits in which Mike + Ben muse on the latest going on’s capital market, stock headlines of the week, and the best segment (imo) what they are consuming media wise. These sessions are usually a chance for Michael Batnick to recognize and incorporate the steady mid-western sensibility of Ben Carlson and reconcile the rest of the USA into his New York/Long Island frame of mind. Seriously, you’ll learn much from the hosts. In an age where information is cheap, these 2 give meaning to the markets and as investors if we are going to make better decisions with our money, we need a perspective where the voices we tune into are not afraid to refine and update their opinions.

Enjoyable podcast about investing, life and what they are watching and reading. Investing conversations are very interesting and they’ve had a few guests on to talk about diversification that I haven’t read about before. I enjoy the podcasts because you are never sure what they’ll be talking about. Maybe have a pen and paper handy to jot down ideas and things to read and watch. Love the show though
Aptly named because the term “animal spirits” has long been used to describe the psychological and emotional factors that influence investors during high levels of volatility in the markets. This is a perfect way to describe the content that Michael Batnick and Ben Carlson bring to light on their show. I have learned more in 6 months listening to this show than I did in the 6 years prior. No surprise considering it was recommended to me by an acquaintance whose job title is Certified Financial Planner. These are the investment advisors that your investment advisors listen to. Need I say more? No. But I like to hear myself talk so I’ll add just a few more words. Both of the hosts are Certified Financial Analysts and hold positions at a well-regarded wealth management firm. They’re young too so you can be sure they aren’t giving you outdated advice while not being so young that they haven’t seen enough boom and bust cycles to know what to do during them. Between the sarcasm of Ben and the high-speed rebuttals by Michael, these guys are the perfect duo to break down complex financial ideas. I’d say you should be financially literate to understand the concepts they discuss, but even if you aren’t, they make sure you’ll walk away with the right data and the right perspective on topics ranging from homeownership to inflation and even portfolio comparisons with specific examples. Another reason this is my favorite podcast is that both of these guys author and update their own financial commentary websites. Highly recommend that in addition to listening to their show, you also subscribe to their newsletters. They put out timely content with relevant ideas and the data to back them up. Finally, and most importantly, they don’t pretend to have all the answers. Sometimes knowing that even the professionals don’t have a good answer helps the most. It’s so refreshing in a world where everyone is trying to sell you something.

Overloading Feed
Weekly pod is a good rundown of financial news and observations (5 stars). The ‘Talk Your Book’ addition to bring in sponsors is alright you just have to remember you are listening to an ad (4 stars). Now a little disappointed to have the feed include audio blog posts that some of us already subscribe to (3 stars). Not knocking the idea of audio blog post offering, just think there is no need to overwhelm the previous podcast feed with more episodes. It’d be appreciated if they launched a separate vertical for audio blog posts.

Insightful and Compelling
These guys will be the first to tell you when they don’t know something for certain: and it’s the humility with which they approach questions pertaining to life and investing (and book or Netflix recommendations) that makes this podcast so good. Just because something might be unknowable does not mean one shouldn’t strive to know more. Their observations on things like Michael’s plumber’s portfolio, or dissecting the various chart crimes committed in the world, or making the case that Almost Famous IS a classic film, these guys give intriguing perspectives based on more than just the ephemeral...they dig for precedents and in this day and age that means they pretty much come up empty, and yet you don’t hate them for it. Truly a fun pod to listen to.

All-around slam dunk
Are you looking for hidden sources of alpha? Do you want to geek out over backtesting? Would you like help developing a killer trading strategy? This podcast is NOT for you. Otherwise, if you are interested in investing and don’t mind having “casual fun” while hearing about it, this is the one. Michael and Ben sound like two well-educated, polished “bros” talking serious business over beers at a dive bar. They are really good at mixing in a discussions about Fed policy and Peloton bikes in the same sentence. The information is pretty interesting, the analysis is solid but very quick (soundbite style), and the dry but geeky humor that is not pedantic at all makes everything very digestible. I could probably live without the 3-5 minutes of Netflix show reviews at the end, but that’s just me. I listen to every single episode, and religiously stop streaming as soon as they say “alright, let’s move to recommendations”. Anyway, give it a try.

Very biased and lack of content as they shifted to 2 episodes per week
1. They should go back to doing 1 episode every two weeks. 2. They are heavily biased on every topic.. after listening to almost 1 year now i can just guess what their response is for every issue... there is no middle ground or deep analysis on any issue. Initially I started consuming this podcast a way to hear about so many news items in one place but now there are many other good podcasts which are doing the same without being biased so tough to recommend this podcast any more.

Michael and Ben are great
This is like hanging out with your two good friends who happen to be knowledgable about finance. Entertaining and insightful, but also relaxing to listen to. At the end of a long day there's no chance I'd be able to absorb content-dense material on finance, even an audiobook, but I can listen to these guys. They make it fun.

A fave podcast
Love this podcast, they cut out all the investment BS, cut to the chase. Great rapport. High speed, relevant. They switch topics without belaboring points which keeps it interesting. Intelligent, informative discussion. I’m writing this after the pod on structured notes... great stuff. Keep it up.

My Spirit Animals
I love how this podcast dodges small talk, but also squeezes meaning out of everyday topics. I’m a fan of the research and multiple subject tie-ins that guide this podcast. I’m also a fan of how Michael and Ben don’t mind putting their own financial lives out there occasionally. This balance of broader content and relatability keeps me coming back. Sometimes they topic hop like crazy madhatters. But my brain works in a similar way so I don’t mind following their train of thought. It usually connects to something far deeper than money or investing eventually. I’m going to get judgy hear and say I lost some respect when I found out one of them was a fan of Howard Stern. I suppose that happens in the world though. I’d still be willing to be friends with them.

Sitting in the College Dorm at 1 a.m.
Listening to these guys reminds me of folks sitting in the dorm in awe of new concepts they are discovering for the first time, except they are in their 30's, which makes the experience both cool, and sad. For example, they first heard about epistemology for the first time just recently. Really??? Other real gaps of education reveal themselves all the time, like opining that Neil Postman was talking about things in advertising that advertisers hadn't already discovered years prior. After a Superforecasters review, Ben began using his new way of looking at the world on a number of different subjects, like somebody taking Marx 101 would start analyzing everything through the lens of class struggle during the semester. All in all, if you are looking for cute, snappy, but superficial quick takes on topics, it's like the old Regis and Kathie Lee show, except they use the WSJ for jumping off points, instead of the Post.

0 Stars for Michael 5 Stars for Ben
Ben is refreshing, smart and humble. Michael is just whiney, annoying, and thinks he is better than other people. Heard him refer to others as “dumb” multiple times. I get it, he has a sarcastic, negative personality, but it’s just unnecessary. He also only hears what he wants to hear from Ben and is usually just waiting for his next chance to talk — exactly the opposite of effective communication.

Decent commentary, annoying voices.
I appreciate the market commentary and information presented, but can barely listen because these guys sound like they have a perpetual cold. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD BLOW YOUR NOSE. And since when is the word ‘percent’ pronounced “percentdthe”? Good market/macro/historical podcast, but rating 3 stars because it’s nearly impossible to listen to these nasally voices for 30+ minutes at a time. Just a little constructive criticism, being that you are in the business of talking into a microphone now. Could use a little work on that aspect.

Good podcast but reason I’m writing this is this new manager series. Terrible. The cliches from the jpm manager are throw up worthy. You guys flag waive on passive investing and then throw someone like this who is holding on to the active space for dear life. Doesn’t make sense. Coincidence that it couples with a jp ad to start the show?

Not only are these two razor sharp and do a great job providing commentary on items of interest in the capital markets and investment management, but they have great rapport and are quite funny. Their intros - "trading 3x leveraged ETFs for the love of the game" and "I've never drank coffee, I've never been on Facebook..." perfectly encapsulate their personalities. So good.

I very much appreciate a podcast which maintains relevance through time, as opposed to one which is mostly or wholly news-based. Read Ben’s blog, but skip this rambling conversation
Ben’s a skilled and thoughtful writer. Glimpses of that depth come across in the podcast, but not enough yet. Michael would probably be off better acting as an interviewer/facilitator to extract Ben’s insights. First 4 episodes sound like a couple dudes shooting the sh**, which I suppose it is.
