- #705 Muppets In Moscow - Natasha Lance RogoffWelcome to The Not Old Better Show, Author Interview Series on radio and podcast. I’m Paul Vogelzang, and today’s show is brought to you by Shady Rays sunglasses and Trivia Star the #1 trivia game in the Apple app store. As part of our Art Of Living author interview series, we have an excellent program about wild tale of producing the Russian version of Sesame Street (Ulitsa Sezam) in the early to mid-1990s. Thank you so much for listening. We’ve got a great guest today for our Art Of Living author interview series with Natasha Lance Rogoff, author of the new book, Muppets in Moscow and I’ll introduce her in just a moment. But, quickly, if you missed any episodes, last week was our 704th episode when I spoke to Smithsonian Women’s History Month Series Smithsonian Associate, Emmy award-winning filmmaker Sara Lukinson about the magnificent Barbra Streisand. Two weeks ago, as part of our Smithsonian Associates Science Literacy series, I spoke to scientist, journalist, and author Kelly Beatty. For the past 35 years, J. Kelly Beatty has kept his readers on the edge of their front-row seats to much of the exploration of our solar system as senior editor of Sky & Telescope. Excellent subjects for our Not Old Better Show audience, especially during Women’s History Month…If you missed those shows, along with any others, you can go back and check them out with my entire back catalog of shows, all free for you, there on our website, NotOld-Better.com After the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, the timing appeared perfect to bring the venerable, long-time popular children’s program Sesame Street to millions of children living in the former Soviet Union. With the Muppets envisioned as ideal ambassadors of Western idealistic values, no one anticipated just how challenging and dangerous this would prove to be. In 1993, the Sesame Workshop hired our guest today Natasha Lance Rogoff, an American, to bring Sesame Street to Russia. The Muppets and Sesame Street are American cultural icons, and introducing them to Russia so soon after the collapse of communism would not be easy. In Muppets in Moscow, our guest today, Natasha Lance Rogoff brings the story to life. Natasha Lance Rogoff , fluent in Russian, is an award-winning American television producer, filmmaker, and journalist who has produced television news and documentaries in Russia, Ukraine, and the former Soviet Union for CBS, NBC, ABC, and PBS. Natasha Lance Rogoff executive produced Ulitsa Sezam, the Russian adaptation of Sesame Street, between 1993 and 1997 That, of course, is our guest today Natasha Lance Rogoff, reading from her new book, Muppets In Moscow. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, Author Interview Series on radio, and podcast Natasha Lance Rogoff. My thanks to Shady Rays sunglasses and Trivia Star the #1 trivia game in the Apple app store, for sponsoring today’s show. My thanks to Natasha Lance Rogoff for her generous time and reading. My thanks to the Smithsonian team for all they do to support the show, and of course, my thanks to you, my wonderful Not Old Better Show audience… Let’s talk about better. I’m Paul Vogelzang, and as part of our Inside Science Series we have an excellent program about bizarre cosmic objects whose gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape them: those objects being Black Holes. Our guest today is Smithsonian Associate, scientist, journalist, and author Kelly Beatty. For the past 35 years, J. Excellent subjects for our Not Old Better Show audience…If you missed those shows, along with any others, you can go back and check them out with my entire back catalog of shows, all free for you, there on our website, NotOld-Better.com Myself, and many of us in the Not Old Better Show Smithsonian Associates audience may have learned that black holes are bizarre cosmic objects whose gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape them. And although you might guess that Einstein came up with the concept of black holes, the idea can be traced back to the late 1700s. But Einstein did develop the notion that three-dimensional space and time are part of a single framework to describe the known universe and how black holes shape it. More recently, gravity-wave “observatories” have detected the ripples in spacetime created when two of these objects collide, and we’ve even managed to glimpse silhouettes of the most massive black holes known. Science, space, and exploration is what and who our guest today, Kelly Beatty, is. Kelly Beatty, senior editor at Sky & Telescope magazine is with us today and will be appearing at Smithsonian Associates coming up to discuss how cosmologists still grapple with precisely what black holes are and how best to study them. My thanks to the scientist, space explorer, journalist, and Smithsonian Associate Kelly Beatty. and her new book, "Formidable: American Women and the Fight for Equality: 1920-2020" Kelly Beatty will be presenting at Smithsonian Associates coming up, and the title of his Smithsonian Associates presentation is “Black Holes 101.” so please check out our show notes today for more details. Anthony called “the long, hard fight,” the Nineteenth Amendment enfranchising 26 million white and Black women, was added to the Constitution on August 26, 1920. However, according to our guest today, Smithsonian Associate Elisabeth Griffith, the Nineteenth Amendment was an incomplete victory. Join Elisabeth Griffith and me as we talk about her upcoming Smithsonian Associates presentation, Black and white women who fought hard for voting rights and doubled the number of eligible voters, but how the amendment did not enfranchise all women or even protect the rights of those women who could vote. A century later, women are still grappling with how to use the vote and their political power to expand civil rights, confront racial violence, improve maternal health, advance educational and employment opportunities, and secure reproductive rights. The title of Rebecca Boggs Roberts’ presentation is Edith Wilson: The First (Unelected) Woman President. While this nation has yet to elect its first woman president—and though history has downplayed her role—just over a century ago a woman became the nation’s first acting president. In fact, she was born in 1872, and her name was Edith Bolling Galt Wilson. She climbed her way out of Appalachian poverty and into the highest echelons of American power and in 1919 effectively acted as the first woman president of the U.S. (before women could even vote nationwide) when her husband, Woodrow Wilson, was incapacitated. Beautiful, brilliant, charismatic, catty, and calculating, she was a complicated figure whose personal quest for influence reshaped the position of First Lady into one of political prominence forever. And still nobody truly understands who she was. As you’ve heard me say over the years since starting my radio shows and podcasts, entrepreneurship isn’t just for the young. So many in our Not Old Better Show audience are finding that starting a business can be the perfect way to turn a lifetime of experience into something meaningful, take control of their time, counter workplace ageism, and, in some cases, make a lot more money. But where to start, and how do you use your age as an advantage? My guest, Sam Mulaim, today on The Not Old Better Show Business Buildout interview series, will help you understand the challenges of building an online business, using the website development tools from WordPress, the ubiquitous solution to creating your online presence, and what a ‘plugin’ is and why they’re so important. Israeli business founder Sam Mulaim has over 15 years of experience in digital industries and has helped hundreds of companies, like mine, grow and start their online companies. Sam Mulaim founded FixRunner WordPress Support in Israel, the US, and Croatia, with the goal of giving all of us a head start online, using SEO, helping businesses worldwide compete for your website to rank high and often, and some very special advice for older entrepreneurs interested in starting a WordPress site and using FixRunner WordPress services. I’ll tell you right up front that Sam and FixRunner make my website work, but I pay Sam for this service, and today’s show is all about Sam’s company FixRunner, purely editorial, and hopefully, you’ll get a sense as to why this works for me, and how it might work for you. I reached out to Sam requesting this interview, and there’s been no fee paid by Sam, nor is Sam sponsoring today’s episode. As you know, from time to time my show is sponsored, but often it’s not and is purely editorial.
