As you’ve heard me say over the years since starting my radio shows and podcasts, entrepreneurship isn’t just for the young. So many in our Not Old Better Show audience are finding that starting a business can be the perfect way to turn a lifetime of experience into something meaningful, take control of their time, counter workplace ageism, and, in some cases, make a lot more money. But where to start, and how do you use your age as an advantage? My guest, Sam Mulaim, today on The Not Old Better Show Business Buildout interview series, will help you understand the challenges of building an online business, using the website development tools from WordPress, the ubiquitous solution to creating your online presence, and what a ‘plugin’ is and why they’re so important. Israeli business founder Sam Mulaim has over 15 years of experience in digital industries and has helped hundreds of companies, like mine, grow and start their online companies. Sam Mulaim founded FixRunner WordPress Support in Israel, the US, and Croatia, with the goal of giving all of us a head start online, using SEO, helping businesses worldwide compete for your website to rank high and often, and some very special advice for older entrepreneurs interested in starting a WordPress site and using FixRunner WordPress services. I’ll tell you right up front that Sam and FixRunner make my website work, but I pay Sam for this service, and today’s show is all about Sam’s company FixRunner, purely editorial, and hopefully, you’ll get a sense as to why this works for me, and how it might work for you. I reached out to Sam requesting this interview, and there’s been no fee paid by Sam, nor is Sam sponsoring today’s episode. I’m Paul Vogelzang, and today’s show is brought to you by POM Wonderful; 100% Pomegranate Juice is “health in a bottle.” We have an excellent holiday program about a surprising story of faith and friendship. Thank you so much for listening. As I say, we’ve got a great guest today, who, after reading his new book, I’ve been looking forward to for a while and whom I’ll introduce in just a moment…But, quickly, if you missed any episodes, last week was our 680th episode, and I spoke with physicist, NASA scientist, author, and Smithsonian Associate Les Johnson about A Traveler’s Guide to the Stars: The Possibilities of Interstellar Exploration Two weeks ago, I spoke to Smithsonian Associate Clay Jenkinson about Gulliver’s Travels and the fascinating story within a story, not just for children. Many people, as I did, first came to know Sr. Wendy Beckett in the 1990s through her popular television program, "Sister Wendy's Odyssey." She was an unlikely celebrity: diminutive, dressed in a medieval-looking black habit of her own design, her lively and intelligent features offset by large spectacles. Yet countless viewers became entranced by her tour of famous galleries around the world, and by her incisive and empathetic commentary on the works of art she encountered along the way. In 2018 Sister Wendy Beckett passed away. Several years prior to Sis Wendy’s passing she began corresponding with our guest today author Robert Ellsberg. The book Dearest Sister Wendy . . . A Surprising Story of Faith and Friendship that resulted from those letters, emails, conversations and contact is out now, I’ve read it, and we’ll be talking with Robert Ellsberg about it today on The Not Old Better Show on radio and podcast. That of course is our guest today, author, publisher Robert Ellsberg reading from his new book, which he’s co-written, entitled: Dearest Sister Wendy…A Surprising Story of Faith and Friendship. We’ll hear more today from Robert Ellsberg about his new book, and his hope that those who read it and these letters will discover the person, in Sister Wendy, behind the television persona: a modern mystic, a genius of the spiritual life, a person of far-seeing sensitivities, a great lover of God whose capacity for love she was still discovering at the end of her life. And perhaps they will feel included in her final apostolate of friendship. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show on radio and podcast, author Robert Ellsberg. We are listening to ‘Monastery Bells’ from Smithsonian Folkways today My thanks to the Smithsonian team for all they do to support the show. My thanks to Robert Ellsberg for his time today. - Clay Jenkinson - Gulliver's Travels: A Satire Not Just for ChildrenWelcome to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview series on radio and podcast. I’m Paul Vogelzang, and today’s show is part of our Smithsonian Associates Art of Living author historian interview series, and we have an excellent program about history, the optimism of the enlightenment, the role of Houyhnhmn’s, and if you still don’t know, we are talking about ‘Gulliver’s Travels’…you’re going to want to hear this. Thank you so much for listening. And as the music, we’re listening to Smithsonian Folkways recording of Woody Guthrie, Hard Traveling. Two weeks ago had another great conversation with author and Smithsonian Associate Carole Adrienne about her new book, ‘Healing a Divided Nation. Wonderful stuff…If you missed those shows, along with any others, you can go back and check them out with my entire back catalog of shows, all free for you there on our website, NotOld-Better.com…and if you leave a review, we will read it at the end of each show…leave reviews on Apple Podcasts for us. Smithsonian Associate and popular returning guest Clay Jenkinson will be presenting at Smithsonian Associates coming up, so please check out our show notes for more details. I always enjoy speaking with Clay Jenkinson because I learn so much, and from your emails, to me after Clay appears on the show, you agree! Clay is funny, too, and I laugh out loud. Clay is a historian, a lecturer, and a Jeffersonian, in fact, Clay Jenkinson was the main commentator for Ken Burns’ PBS documentary on Thomas Jefferson. He is a CNN TV personality, and we have Clay Jenkinson today! Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels is often regarded as a children's book, but only by people who have never read it through. Swift was filled with "savage indignation" at the problems in the human character. According to our guest today, Clay Jenkinson, Gulliver's Travels is a work of genius, a witty, enchanting, and unrelenting critique of the optimism of the Enlightenment. Join me today for a wonderful conversation with humanities scholar Clay Jenkinson as Clay sorts out the meaning of ‘Gulliver’s Travels,’ and leads us on a journey into the dark recesses of the severest satirist in the English language. That’s Pete Seeger from Smithsonian Folkways singing ‘Lincoln and Liberty,’ to set the history and Civi l War tone today. At the start of the Civil War, the medical field in America was rudimentary, unsanitary, and woefully underprepared to address what would become the bloodiest conflict on U.S. soil. However, in this historic moment of pivotal social and political change, medicine was also fast evolving to meet the needs of the time. Unprecedented strides were made in the science of medicine, and as women and African Americans were admitted into the field for the first time. The Civil War marked a revolution in healthcare, laying the foundations for the system we know today. Drawing on her new book Healing a Divided Nation, Carole Adrienne tracks this remarkable and fierce transformation in its cultural and historical context, illustrating how the advancements made in these four years reverberated throughout the western world for years to come. Adrienne is an author and documentary filmmaker. She has served on advisory panels for the Philadelphia Archdiocesan Historic Research Center and exhibitions on Civil War medicine and the 1918 flu epidemic for the Mutter Museum. My thanks to Carole Adrian who’ll be appearing at Smithsonian Associates coming up. What do you call a veterinarian that can only take care of one species? A physician. As you just heard from our guest today, Dr. Barbara Natterson-Horowitz, who is a physician, who’ll share how a species-spanning approach to health can improve medical care of the human animal — particularly when it comes to mental health. Wonderful stuff…If you missed those shows, along with any others, you can go back and check them out with my entire back-catalog of shows, all free for you there on our website, NotOld-Better.com…and if you leave a review, we will read it at the end of each show…leave reviews on Apple Podcasts for us. Our guest today is award-winning historian, author, and public humanities scholar Clay Jenkinson who’ll introduce us to the US Constitution…yes, the US Constitution which is a document worth paying A LOT of attention to these days, and a document getting A LOT of attention these days, for good reason, too. Clay Jenkinson will be appearing at Smithsonian Associates coming up, but we have Clay Jenkinson today and will chat all about the United States Constitution, which was written in the 18th century, in a three-mile-per-hour world, by white privileged men in wigs and buckled shoes. It has been amended only 27 times in 235 years, the first 10 right off the bat in the Bill of Rights. The question we’ll talk about today with Clay Jenkinson is whether the Constitution is still the right blueprint for the most powerful country in the world at a time of breathtaking social and technological change, or whether it is time to amend or replace it with something more relevant to the opportunities and challenges of our times. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show on radio and podcast, award-winning historian, author, and public humanities scholar Clay Jenkinson. Please check out our website for more details about Smithsonian Associates, and let’s welcome Clay Jenkinson. My thanks to Clay Jenkinson. Thomas Jefferson once asserted that "for depth of purpose, zeal, and sagacity, no man in Congress exceeded, if any equaled Sam Adams." John Adams called him "the most elegant writer, the most sagacious politician, and celebrated patriot perhaps of all." But in spite of his celebrated status among America's Founding Fathers as a revolutionary leader, Samuel Adams' life and achievements have been largely overshadowed in the history books. In a spirited conversation today with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Stacy Schiff who’ll be appearing at Smithsonian Associates with show favorite Rebecca Boggs Roberts, we will examine this often-overlooked US Constitution founder, Samuel Adams, following his transformation from the listless, failing son of a wealthy family into the tireless, silver-tongued revolutionary who rallied the likes of John Hancock and John Adams behind him. Including a wonderful reading by Stacy Schiff, from chapter 2 in her new book: ‘The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams.’ And ‘A Voice in the Darkness…A Knock on the Door.’ That, of course, is our guest today, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Stacy Schiff, reading from her new book, ‘The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams.’ Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associate Stacy Schiff.
