My Favorite Podcast
I love the 1000 hours outside podcast. Ginny is funny, down to earth, and inspiring. I can tell she has done her research before inviting someone on her podcast and she chooses very exciting and interesting people to interview. Our family doesn’t homeschool and I still get so much from the conversations. I have learned a lot and I enjoy this very unique podcast. Thank you so much for your effort in prioritizing families connecting with one another and with nature while using less screen time!! ❤️

Questionable guests, won’t answer questions about them
We followed 1000 hours outside for three years, counting our hours and tagging almost all our posts with the #1000hoursoutside hashtag. No more. I asked the host if this show and movement for answers about some guests with concerning views re: anti-LBTQ+ and pro-hitting kids including Focus on the Family. They did not share this info on the podcast episodes but when I asked the host to answer about giving them a platform I was blocked on fb from private and public spaces about the movement.

An absolute joy and inspiration!!!
I look forward to every 1000 hours episode!!! I have three small children under 4 and this podcast has inspired us to prioritize getting outdoors… seeking out the fun and leaving dishes in the sink. It has also helped normalize some of the struggles we face as parents and truly has provided some light on some dark days! Thank you so much! Your work is so important and I want you to know!!!! Thanks again from the Simmons family! ❤️

One of the best interviewers around
I work in the podcast industry and Ginny’s interviews are above and beyond the usual standard. You can tell she deeply reads guests’ books and other materials and draws out exactly what her audience is most interested to learn. You can tell the guests are often surprised at how deeply she has gone into their writing and it makes a difference as to how much they open up and share. Ginny, you should teach a class on podcast interviewing. Love the show, huge fan!!

Amazing content!
I am not a podcast person so it took me a long time to check this one out, even though we’ve been doing 1000 Hours Outside for a few years. I regret waiting so long because it is SO GOOD. I have been devouring all the back episodes and listening to the new ones as soon as they are released. The content is so inspiring and very timely for us. Thank you to Ginny and all of your guests!

So informative and inspirational!
I’ve been listening to Ginny’s podcast for the last couple months and I really gotten into it during my morning walks that I just started over a month ago! I’ve been so impressed with the variety of topics covered in these podcasts, I’ve learned so much and my reading list has grown since I started listening to this podcast. My children love being outside, but this podcast has also inspired me to have more adventures with my family of five and be more intentional about getting out there even when it would be easier to stay home. Thanks Ginny!

I was just really inspired by Ginny and Adelaide
Do it now, travel now, be outside now, learn the language now! Thanks for this inspirational chat and reminder to not wait to see the world and be able to travel. Time is passing, don’t wait for the the kids to grow up! I loved that Adelaide talked about actually talking in a new language in the countries her family visited, not sitting and studying a language book. Makes so much sense! I think we all want that! I love the financial information she shared and how her family is able to adventure around the world. Thanks for sharing this interview, Ginny! You are ALWAYS the best interviewer and I love hearing you and your guests belly laugh and have fun and share about real life! Now, off to dream of an awesome family trip and start planning!

Changing my parenting!
This podcast has been amazing! I feel that it’s no exaggeration to say that multiple episodes have been completely life changing for my family and me. The host, Ginny, has no clue who I am, but I talk about her to my husband, relatives and friends as if she’s a close friend. I adore her personality, her perspective, and her brilliant guests!

My new favorite!
I found this podcast through my daughter who was encouraged to get my grandkids outdoors more. But now I have the app and it’s ALREADY changing my life! I got a goruck after hearing about rucking and I’ve started off the new year being outdoors even in the colder weather. I wish I had heard this when my kids were young but I’m so thankful to learn even in my 50s.

By FAR my favorite podcast
I haven’t religiously listened to podcasts because they can be mundane… but let me tell you- this is anything BUT. Ginny is SO invested in her interviews. Her guests often comments on how well she has researched the books she comments on. She feels so relatable and the warmth her personality exudes is palpable. Subscribing to this podcast has been a must for me. I would encourage you to do the same!

Great idea, some problematic guests and behavior by host
I love many of the concepts and ideas in this podcast but can’t support that several of the guests are actively transphobic and anti-lgbtq. When the host is asked about this she deletes and blocks.

Important topics for all parents
Love this podcast and the topics that are covered. Ginny’s work is so important in a world that is continually trying to disconnect you from nature and the world around you. I feel so strongly about this I’m literally at a loss for words to continue this review. Seriously just go listen

One of my favorite podcasts
This is an exceptional podcast. I’m always recommending episodes to friends and family members, even those without children. Ginny is an excellent interviewer, perhaps because she is doing this out of her own interest. She asks thoughtful questions, and also makes connections to other topics she has had episodes on. I had my husband listen to an episode with me and he commented on what a nice job she does. The topics also regularly prove interesting. I rarely skip an episode, and if I do go back and listen it’s often more interesting than I was expecting.

Delightful
Ginny is so fun and her laugh makes me so happy. I love what she has done with 1000 hours outside. I have an hour so far in 2023 with my 15 month old (even in the snow and with a thrown out back from New Year’s Eve!) I appreciate her enthusiasm about the books and authors she interviews and integrating their ideas into her own family. Also I’m leaving this review because of her latest episode with Alastair Humphreys, who is also a delight. Thanks Ginny!

Great start to 2023
One of my “resolutions” for this year is to listen to more podcasts - this was the first one I listened to and it was such a great one to begin with! I have a child who will be graduating this year and wants to “do stuff” in his gap year but is unsure of where to start - I’m going to encourage him to start by reading The Doorstep Mike because of what I just heard. Thank you so much, Ginny, for all the ways you have been an encouragement to me this past year to get outside and get my kids engaged with nature!

Listener Beware
I used to be a huge supporter of the 1000 hours outside movement. Then I learned that Ginny Yurich has a history of hosting transphobic and homophobic guests on her podcasts. She refuses to address it by deleting comments and blocking anyone who asks about her problematic guests on her social media sites.

The best parenting and life advice
Just finished my first 1,000 hours outside with my now 21 month old. When I’m not outside, I’m doing chores inside with this podcast playing. Beyond inspiring and motivating. So grateful!
I love the conversations on this podcast—they feel natural and keep me wanting more. Some podcasts the hosts and guests spend half the time laughing and filling in gaps in the conversation and it feels awkward, but this one feels like I’m sitting down with old friends and the topic never gets old! Some of these episodes have changed the way I parent my kids and the way I parent myself and I’m so grateful to have found it.

Truly inspiring podcast!
This quickly became one of my favorite podcasts to listen to! I started listening to this podcast for homeschooling related inspiration and could never have imagined how it would impact my life in general. The variety of topics and guests is fantastic. It’s clear that Ginny takes the time to thoroughly prepare for her conversations. She does a great job of guiding the conversation and makes a point of highlighting intriguing aspects of the guest’s work. I always take away at least a few gems from each episode, whether that be info, ideas, things to ponder, books to read or new things to try. This podcast has positively impacted the way I think, parent and live.

Great Podcast for parents and grans
I’ve listened to 3 podcasts so far after following 1000 Hours Outside on Instagram for a while. Ginny Yurich is a terrific podcast host; she has great background info, asks thoughtful questions and is super easy to listen to as she interviews her fascinating guests. Her podcast about enjoying family life and words - I’m inspired by all of Sally’s words and those steps! Then the ‘how to keep technology in its place’ podcast ~ seriously, I had to take an emotional break when Andy said something like ‘once the candles are lit, no body wants to leave’! Also terrific is ‘Start With Hello’ ~ yep, many times I’ve felt so weird. For instance inviting neighbors to corner for coffee when inside wasn’t an option; a really validating conversation. I’m in the middle of Ginny’s interview with the Swedish Author who tell us how to keep playing outside even if it’s not a great weather day. Find and follow @1000HoursOutside on IG. I LOVE IG for this very reason ~ learning how to do life better! So thankful to follow this podcast!

The best conversations for all who love kids, nature, and education
There are so many things to love about this podcast! If you’re even slightly interested in children, nature, and education, you will learn so much from Ginny’s conversations with her guests. As a former children’s librarian and middle/high school teacher, there is an abundance of relevant information for me within these episodes. I’m currently 36 weeks pregnant with my first child and have always wanted to raise my future family with nature-based practices and a love and curiosity of learning. Not only does 1000 Hours offer insight into these topics, it explores so many diverse concepts - my brain literally cannot comprehend all of the fantastic ideas I’m getting for the future! Ginny is also an incredible host - I don’t know how she does it! And each guest offers beautiful insight into their craft. Each conversation is very well constructed (but I’m sure it happens naturally), and I now have 50+ more books to read for my own continuing education! Thank you, Ginny, for your 1000 Hours movement and sharing these conversations with us!

Amazing!
I love this podcast so much! The content is information that is a must-listen for everyone even if you don’t have kids. Truly life changing. I will say though, that after I first started listening I actually quit because the audio is so terrible in some of the beginning episodes. I had to skip some and hope to go back to them when I can wear headphones and there isn’t any background noise. I am only about 20 episodes in from the beginning though so I hope it gets better soon.

Love podcast and app, could add 1 feature
Hi I recently discovered this podcast and love it. I also got the app and it’s awesome. One thing I’d like to be able to do is count the amount of time we spend outside as a family AND the amount my kids spend outside alone - in the backyard . That featured would be awesome. I’m aware it’s not exactly the goal of the app but my kids have been spending so much more time out than me id like to see that reflected on our time outside.

So much knowledge!
I started listening during the pandemic, which was also the beginning of my short stint with homeschooling. Ginny and the guests she interviews have given me so much to think about in terms of parenting and education. I recently started my Masters of Education program and will be incorporating ideas I heard here first into my project that I hope will influence the public education of students within my realm of influence.

Giving hope in a tough time to parent, Thank you!
Thank you!!! This podcast gives me the space to find community. When we moved in on our street the neighbor kid (4th grade) said “you guys are weird, you’re outside all the time.” We knew we wanted our kids to be outside and with friends, so now we just open the garage and the neighborhood kids come and play in the street and on our driveway. I love knowing that all the camping trips, hikes, and beach time is so mentally healthy for my kids and myself. Thank you for producing this podcast, inviting great guests and supporting parents who are trying to raise kids.

Such a great podcast.
I’ve listened to several podcasts and over time, I begin to sort of get annoyed with the host. (Which is terrible, I know!) But I can honestly say I never get tired of Ginny! She’s so genuine, truly cares about families and kids, loves life, and is so humble and kind to those on her show. The topics she discusses are so informative! This has been a life-changing podcast for me and I’m so grateful to have found it when I was pregnant with my first child. I have a whole new perspective (and love) for getting my kids outside! Not just for them, but for me too! (Even if we live in sub-below zero Fargo, ND ;)) Thanks Ginny, for all you do. It’s so inspiring :)

Great insights
1000 Hours Outside podcast has such good insights about youth sports and family balance for this non-sports minded mom! This episode 44 (Are we modeling that adulthood is a big bore) especially gives perspective about how unnecessary it is to let a child’s sport take over the family’s needs and how we model that adulthood is boring if we let the kids’ sport schedule override our own personal interests.

The BEST!!!
This is my FAVORITE podcast, hands-down!!! Ginny inspires me every week to pursue a wide, natural view of education, to read widely, and explore nature with my kids. It all started with the 1000 hours challenge many years ago, and has become so much more. So, so, SO informative and encouraging AND without selling out to constant self-promotion and marketing like most have these days. That said—go support her! ;) Thank you so much and keep up the good work, Ginny—you’re making such a difference in our lives and so many others!!!

Great podcast/content!
I love the variety of topics, the guests being interviewed and Ginny is such a sweet host. If taken up a slight notch, it would be a solid 5 star podcast! The flow in conversation isn’t always smooth. A lot of time the quotes from the author’s book are shared by Ginny and then Ginny expounds on the quotes and gives personal stories rather than let the guest handle expounding and storytelling. There needs to be some further editing of the podcast when there are longer pauses or bunny trails. Obviously these are recorded with video but just listening to audio it is harder to capture the energy enhanced by the visual. Also, can Ginny get an updated photo of her beautiful self for the podcast cover? 😉😍 Keep up the good work, 1000 hours outside team! Your impact is huge!

I’ve fallen in love
I stumbled upon this podcast knowing nothing about Ginny or her 1000 hours movement and I am now in love with both. She is all of us meeting people we are in love with and in awe of. She just brings such raw joy to every episode and has the most interesting people on her show. Many of these episodes have completely changed my perspective on childhood while also connecting many of the feelings I have in my heart with words. Thank you for this beautiful production.

An inspiration to hit 1000 hours outside for your kids (and you). But I think with Ginny's help and her podcast and amazing guests we can get there! Thank you for the range of guests and the insight they and you share on how to let our kids be wild and free and turn them into good, kind, caring people who love the earth.

Love this podcast!
I’m learning so much about how kids need more time in nature! I’m struggling with getting my 2.5 year old outside this winter because I have a baby who can’t be out there when it’s too cold. And my toddler doesn’t like staying out there when it’s below 30 degrees. Love the episode about getting outside in the winter. I’ve never tried wool clothing like the episode suggests but it sounds like something that would help my toddler!

New to this podcast
I’m new to this podcast and just finished the episode with Teacher Tom. Was very insightful. I am a mom to 3 boys (ages 4, 2 and 2 months) and this episode has given me a lot of helpful information about how to just let my kids be kids instead of trying to prepare them for school.

So good - changes parenting journey
In a world that tells us we should be glued to the latest toy/technology that is invented Ginny’s podcast says go outside! She has created content that can give families a vision for what childhood can and should look like. It is encouraging as a parent to hear testimonies and examples that help us remove ourselves from the race that says the best way to help our kids succeed is by doing more and scheduling every minute of their day.

Ginny’s connections are genuine
My take away from every interview that Ginny does is her connection to the person she is talking with. It’s a very rare trait in today’s world to hear someone actually listening, as in listening to understand and connect. Ginny does that! I feel her genuine care for the person she is talking to, she finds joy in their stories and that ability gets passed on to all of us, the listeners, which makes for the most enjoyable listening experience. I always look forward to the next episode! Way to go, Ginny, keep up the good work! Your guests are all phenomenal as well!

Changed Our Family
I’m so thankful we found 1000 Hours Outside. Our kids use the free tracker and have loved coloring in each hour they spend outside. The podcast has kept me motivated to spend more time outside making memories with my kids and helped all of us grow both physically and mentally. I’ve learned so much through the interviews and picked up quite a few of the books from the interviewees. We weren’t a family that spent a lot of time outside and I really believe this has changed our family for the better and brought us closer together. Thank you, Ginny. I really appreciate the time and energy you put towards this podcast.

Ginny is so genuine and you’ll LOVE her encouragement
In this gimmicky influencer phase Ginny is such a breath of fresh air. Our family has benefited SO MUCH from her 1000 hours outside challenge this year. We started Jan 1 and finished early November - in Wisconsin! We made so many memories, and I love hearing Ginny’s voice in my head “what the child finds worthy is worthy!” It makes the little things so magical. So anyway…the podcast! I didn’t even realize there was one, but quickly caught up on the episodes. They are wonderful! Ginny is such a great and authentic interviewer and she has such interesting guests. If you have kids in your house or in your life, or if you just want to reconnect with the ground beneath your feet, this is a must listen!

FULL of astounding info
Every episode of this podcast is full of interesting and astounding information on life outdoors and the benefits/mechanisms of childhood play that I haven’t found elsewhere. Ginny’s warmth and love for children is evident in her voice. The guests she interviews are fascinating in their niche expertise. Thank you Ginny for every episode that reaffirms our outdoor/homeschooling/slow paced lifestyle. I started following 1000 hours outside at the beginning of 2021 and it’s been life changing for our family.

Love the idea. A little disappointed in the podcast
Really wanted to like this podcast; kind of disappointed. We are very into the 1000 hours outside philosophy, and have read books like balanced & barefoot and last child in the woods. This podcast seems like a fair amount of fluff, (and some religious content from guest speakers), and pretty bad audio/not very polished quality wise (the sound of swallowing, clearing throats, chair speaking, talking in the background, very echoey).

Outside
We just adopted 2 little girls, who were always indoors and on screens ages are 4 and 2. They moved in with us about a year ago, but officially adopted them a couple months ago. We immediately got them outside and they are completely different kids. Outdoors is therapy, it’s an outlet, it’s life changing!! This podcast is such a blessing and a great source!! We love 1000 hours outside!!!

Great content, poor audio
I love the content but the audio is poor. I can usually hear guest better than Ginny. It sounds like she is recoding on her phone and there is about 8 feet between her and her phone. I’m so thankful for this content and Ginny’s book—I’ve also loved reading every book from her guests. Such a gold mine! Like others, I just wish the audio quality was higher—sadly, I’ve had to skip a couple episodes, they were just too garbled/echo-y. This content is too important to miss! This is AMAZING!!
I loved this podcast, specifically the one with Lauren Warren. You can tell that the focus on helping our children (and in turn ourselves) focus on the moment, outside. I loved the focus on research and the historical stories, for example in this particular episode how Einstein wanted to sponge up and explore the wonder outdoors. I love the applicable ways we can increase the wonder and amazement for our own children and for us. New goal to get out as much as I can. Thanks!

I’m a huge fan of 1000 Hours Outside and our family loves to find inspiration and ideas from the episodes. My only wish is that the audio was better! Revolutionized My Parenting
I’m 4 kids deep and have always been very clear- I am not a play date/park mom. It’s just not where I found joy. I’m a quiet indoorsy type. With my last 2 being boys- they were (literally) screaming to be outside and for hours. After a friend recommended this 1000 hours outside movement and the unavoidable evidence that it’s what our children NEED and DESERVE I haven’t looked back. We’re outside as much as possible- and after a week or so- any hold that our devices or screens had on our kids was broken. I just take them outside (especially fun with friends) and their imaginations run wild. I recommend this podcast to everyone even those who aren’t moms. The weekly podcasts feed me and boost me into another week outdoors and reminds me why I do it. Keep it up- you’re newest fan! -Lindsay

- 1KHO 114: The High Cost of Over-parenting and Understanding the Damage | Dr. Madeline Levine, Ready or Not: Preparing Our Kids to Thrive in an Uncertain and Rapidly Changing WorldI was on the edge of my seat while I read her book, I was on the edge of my seat during this conversation, and I was on the edge of my seat while I edited it. You're going to love this one and you may even listen to it twice! If it's a favorite of yours, like it's a favorite of mine, share it with friends and family and make sure to subscribe and leave a review. In this week's episode of the podcast, I had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Madeline Levine, a renowned psychologist and expert on child development with 40 years experience. One of the main themes of the conversation was the importance of understanding our failures in order to discover our strengths. Dr. Levine noted that often times, we learn the most from our mistakes and that they can serve as valuable learning experiences. She calls it trial-and-error learning instead of failure. Another key point that was discussed was the idea that most people do not have a straight path to success. Dr. Levine emphasized the importance of recognizing that life is a series of small challenges, and if we can meet them, we go on to bigger and bigger challenges. Additionally, Dr. Levine highlighted the damaging effects of being an over-involved parent and the importance of allowing our children to experience unhappiness. She also discussed the lack of management skills among today's youth, specifically in areas such as risk management and conflict management. Dr. Levine also urged listeners to think long and hard about what's going to matter in the long run, and emphasized the link between optimism and healthy mental health outcomes. She even talked about preparing ourselves for when our kids leave the nest. Overall, this is a thought-provoking and enlightening conversation with Dr. Levine, and I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did! - 1KHO 113: The Digital Substitute: Can Technology Replace our Most Valuable Relationships? | Andy Crouch, The Life We're Looking ForI had the immense privilege of interviewing Andy Crouch for a second time! Amongst many, many accomplishments Andy is the author of the new book "The Life We're Looking For: Reclaiming Relationship in a Technological World." In this episode we discussed the promises and consequences of innovation, and how technology has the power to shape our relationships and interactions with one another. Crouch shared his insight on how for the most valuable things in life, there are no digital substitutes. He also touched on the idea that technology gives us simulations of recognition that ultimately aren’t satisfying. Crouch emphasized that so much is at stake in the way we handle technology, and how it is important for us to understand the role of machines and their need for machine-like environments to operate autonomously. He also challenged us to consider doing something harder and better, rather than just relying on technology to make our lives easier. Overall, the interview provided a thought-provoking perspective on the impact of technology on our relationships and the way we live our lives. After listening to this one, you'll be motivated to be a "three-plane person." :) Crouch’s book offers valuable insights and practical steps for reclaiming relationships in a technological world.
